Farmington retains its hometown feel and still has plenty of room to roam by Tad Johnson THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS MANAGING EDITOR

For those visiting family or friends in Farmington, they have found the perfect place to unwind and relax. Farmington is one of the last places in the metro area that still feels like everyone’s hometown. The city’s historic downtown is a big reason for this sense of place. Downtown is home to several unique shops, restaurants and other service providers to make a stroll at any time of the year a pleasant experience. In Farmington, there is still room to roam, and the city’s park system is a perfect reflection of that. Rambling River Park is the jewel of the system with a walking/biking path that winds over and around the Vermillion River – one of the few trout streams in the metro area.

There are plenty of spots to picnic or throw a Frisbee at Rambling River Park or the neighboring Feely Fields, which is the city’s baseball/softball complex. High school sports is one of the magnets of activity in Farmington. With a new high school opened in 2009, the venues for the youngsters’ games make for a great setting for the action. For sports schedules, go online at www.farmington.k12.mn.us. Those living in Farmington hopefully don’t take this bucolic setting for granted and get out and enjoy their town. If not, I’d encourage them to check out the constantly changing look of downtown. There’s a new City Hall and Rambling River Center for seniors and the rest of the

community in downtown. The Depot Way Art Park along the railway downtown is another gem to explore, and the city is on track to have its second summer of Farmers Market this year. Of course, downtown’s collection of shops and restaurants is always changing offerings, so it’s worth a look to see what’s new.

Lakeville has evolved into a city with a lot to offer any visitor by Larry Werner THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS EDITOR

It wasn’t all that long ago that Lakeville was the village farmers visited when they “went into town” to stock up on provisions. Over the past 30 years or so, it has evolved from a village to a city of 38 square miles where more than 50,000 people live, work and play. Despite the rapid growth of suburban housing, Lakeville hasn’t lost its small-town charm, and has added amenities that make it a fun place to visit as well as a great place to live.

A visitor should make sure to take in the historic downtown, which lies a bit off the beaten path in the southern part of the city. There’s good shopping downtown at places ranging from tony boutiques to one of the few surviving Ben Franklin stores – a classic dime store where the aisles are crowded with affordable notions ranging from model airplanes to Christmas lights to fabric. Want to get something to eat? The collection of downtown eateries includes burgers, ribs, sandwiches, wraps, salads. There’s also a winebar, and an old-fashioned sweet shop. Nightlife in Lakeville includes live music, comics, and jazz bands. There’s a wide variety of performing arts at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, which the city built from the old All Saints Catholic Church on the south end of Holyoke Avenue, Lakeville’s main

street. If you’re a biker, climb on your twowheeler and head west out of downtown for a tour on bike trails that take you through Antler’s Park on the shore of beautiful Lake Marion. There’s a swimming beach there, in case you want to take a dip on a hot day, and plenty of space for picnics. Ritter Farm Park is a favorite place to see Lakeville the way it was before it became a suburb. Or you can walk around Lake Marion, enjoying the water views on one side of the trail and beautiful lakefront homes on the other. Finish your hike at the Veterans Memorial in Aronson Park near downtown, where you can see an historic fighter jet donated by Bill Studer, a lifelong resident of the community. Shoppers also should check out major retail activity at 185th Street and I-35, Crossroads of Lakeville (Dodd and Cedar) and Lakeville Crossing (Highway 46 and Cedar). There is also shopping at Southfork, near I-35 and Highway 50, which has become known as Lakeville’s Uptown. Visitors can cap the night by checking into one of Lakeville’s hotels.

Dakota Woods Dog Park is a great place for dogs and people to have fun. the Dakota County Historical Society Research Library and Museum. Featured on display at the museum are over 25,000 objects, including many historical pictures. Permanent exhibits include “Old Town,” which includes a general store, boarding house, kitchen and jail in addition to many other rooms filled with artifacts and information about Dakota County’s past. The museum also houses the world’s largest map of Dakota County, featuring historic sites like Gopher Ordnance Works, Sibley House and the Miesville Baseball

April Ironman Bike Ride — Held annually in Lakeville

on the last Sunday in April, the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride was established in 1967 and is the longest running century bike ride in Minnesota. With routes of 100, 65 and 30 miles, this single day bike tour has something for every cyclist and marks the unofficial start of the cycling season in the state. Calendar of Events CONTINUED July Lakeville’s Pan-O-Prog — Lakeville’s annual summer festival, Pan-O-Prog, has come to Lakeville the week of the Fourth of July for 42 years. In 2010 it is July 4-10. The annual event is a week long celebration that features more than 50 celebrations, events and activities during the week of July 4. Art & All That Jazz — The Art & All That Jazz Festival is held annually in August at Nicollet Commons Park in Burnsville’s Heart of the City. September Burnsville Fire Muster — Over a five-day stretch, Fire Muster features wine tasting, beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, children’s activities, emergency personnel demonstrations, food and beverages from local restaurants, a community

parade, and, of course, the fire truck parade that started it all. Burnsville’s annual community celebration began officially in 1980, evolving from a smaller, neighborhoodbased activity. During the late 1970s, Burnsville resident and fire equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends entertained children each summer by displaying his collection at what was then known as Diamondhead Mall, capping the day with a short parade of equipment down Nicollet Avenue. The Fire Muster, which is held after Labor Day, celebrated its 30 anniversary in 2009. Lakeville Art Festival — The Lakeville Art Festival is held the third weekend in September in downtown Lakeville on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center, located at 20965 Holyoke Ave. Each year, the festival hosts approximately 60 exhibitors who show and sell their work in many forms and mediums including visual, performing, and literary forms. The event includes a featured artist exhibit, artist demonstrations, Youth Art Tent, performing

Lone Oak Days – Held at Eagan’s historic Holz Farm each fall, Lone Oak Days celebrates what life on the farm used to be like. The event features two days of activities, demonstrations, food and entertainment. Visitors can learn how to make a rope, churn butter, and grind corn, milk a virtual cow or take part in pony rides, hay rides or a pie-eating contest. Big Rivers Regional Trail Big Rivers Regional Trail, for bicycle and pedestrian use, was fully reopened July 23 with construction of a new storm water drainage system near the interchange of Interstate 35E and Highway 13 in Mendota Heights. Located along the northern edge of Dakota County from Eagan to Lilydale, the Big Rivers Regional Trail is a scenic 4 1/2-mile paved trail that overlooks the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. The trail also links to the 72-mile Mississippi National River and Recreation Area

hundreds of miles of trails throughout the greater Twin Cities area historic landmarks including Fort Snelling, Pike Island, and, one of Minnesota’s oldest settlements, the City of Mendota

Mississippi River Regional Trail The Mississippi River Regional Trail will extend over 19 miles along the Mississippi River - from South St. Paul to Hastings - providing scenic views of the river and connections to local parks and trails. The first phase of construction will extend from the existing South St. Paul Riverfront Trail into northern Inver Grove Heights. Three

additional construction phases have been awarded federal TEA-21 funding.

North Urban Regional Trail The North Urban Regional Trail is an east-west corridor that connects Lilydale, Mendota Heights, West St. Paul, and South St. Paul. The trail is in place between Robert Street and the Mississippi River in South St. Paul. Future construction projects will link Valley Park in Mendota Heights to the area near Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul.

Farmington Farmington boasts 42 city parks throughout town with 786 acres of green space to enjoy. Evergreen Knoll Park, 626 Heritage Way, offers a swimmingpool,volleyball,new state-of-the art playground equipment designed for toddler, preschool and schoolaged children, large shelter, picnic tables and restrooms and running water. Rambling River Park, 17 Elm St., offers the city’s largest park with 58 acres of green space that includes tennis courts, a

sand volleyball court, fishing in the Vermillion River, ice skating and warming house, playground equipment, baseball and softball fields, and bike trails. The new North Creek Park located at Upper 182nd Street and Dunbury Avenue has a lighted hockey and ice rink, warming house and wooden area. Prairie Waterway Greenway, 821 13th St., offers 95.4 acres of walking and biking trails that are ideal for rollerblading, fishing off a dock, and a large gazebo

shelter with picnic tables that can be rented for parties and celebrations. Depot Ways Arts Park, located in the heart of downtown Farmington at County Highway 50 and Second Street, is an art sculpture park that is highly unusual for a city this size. The city designated the public space located near the railroad tracks at the corner of Second Street and Highway 50 as an arts park in 2000 and today numerous sculptures and art pieces done by local students enhance a brick path

that winds its way around flower gardens and shade trees. City park or shelter rental is available from May 1 to Oct. 1. Picnic shelters can be reserved for family gatherings, company picnics, reunions and other group events. Lakeville The city of Lakeville has more than 1,400 acres of protected park and conservation land, including 54 neighborhood and community parks featuring playgrounds, open air shelters, biking and walking trails, and athletic complexes. The city also features 18 conservation areas, five greenways and seven nature trails in addition to its parks. Among the jewels of Lakeville’s park system is Ritter Farm Park, a sprawling 340-acre community park located at 19300 Ritter Trail. With a number of biking and walking trails, the park also has lake access for fishermen, a conservation area, ample parking, a picnic area, restroom facilities and even an archery range. Antlers Park is another of Lakeville’s most popular parks. Located along the shores of Lake Marion at 9740 201st St. W., the 12-acre park offers a public beach

Golf Courses DAKOTA COUNTY

There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a ninehole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an additional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are, Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Valleywood is a championship 18-hole course with ponds, doglegs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good management, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered throughout the course, such as the pond-protected par-3 and a hole with a postage stamp-shaped green. Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area. This 18-hole, par-71 course has three sets of tees ranging from 4,805 to 6,306 in yardage and offers gently rolling hills and natural reclaimed Minnesota wetlands to challenge all levels of golfers. Legends Club in Prior Lake features a 30-acre lake, cascading creeks, scenic wetlands, deep ponds and dramatic topography, Legends is more than a stunning 18-hole daily-fee golf course; the 7,046-yard, par-72 layout provides a haven for native plants and wildlife. Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville is built on 180 acres of rolling hills with shining ponds and mature trees. This 18hole championship course provides enjoyment for golfers of all abilities with five sets of tee markers. Heritage Links Golf Club in Lakeville is an 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course. The front nine has a links feel to it with water and rolling terrain, according to its Web site.
