Editor’s Picks Farmington | Lakeville

Become immersed in the sweet comfort of a semirural village On the edge of the welldeveloped and fast-paced sprawling metro area lies what has become one of the region’s best-kept secrets: Farmington. It was once a small town serving area farmers. Farmington’s late-19th century roots shine through upon a single visit to its historic downtown in the southern end of the city. Visitors will find a slow-paced, classic grid layout peppered with friendly faces, plenty of mom-and-pop shops and pleasant parks. Old-fashioned Victorian homes and bungalows offer an idyllic way to live in the eminently walkable older part of town. Farmington often feels like the rural small town of its inception, but there is also a

faster-paced, modern suburban side. The city’s north end features many recreational and commercial amenities but also a newer, more diverse housing stock for those looking for something more contemporary or larger than what is available near the historic downtown. Biking and walking trails abound, connecting both parts of this dichotomous town to its various parks, schools and retail centers. Rambling River Park, which is situated on the Vermillion River, is the hub of this vast network of trails. Farmington is also a community active in its schools. High school sports are among the centers of activity. At Farm-

Golf Courses Dakota County There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. On those pleasant spring, summer and fall days, one can find plenty of activity at area golf courses. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a nine-hole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an additional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Another short course is Cleary Lake Golf Course, part of the 1,045-acre Cleary Lake Regional Park, southwest of Burnsville in Scott County. It has a par-3 length, 9-hole golf course and driving range. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as

offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. A creek that bisects the course comes into play on many of the holes. The terrain undulates, with the back portion of the course mostly on a raised section that makes for some blind shots. Valleywood is a champion-

Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area. Designed by golf course architect Kevin Norby, this 18-hole, par 72 layout with multiple tees offers a unique challenge to golfers of all

Golfers experience bent grass fairways, tees and greens, 13 holes with water, 80 bunkers, 20 fountains and large greens. The Wilds Golf Course in Prior Lake, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, has 150-foot elevation changes, water in play on nearly half of the holes, and more than 70 strategically placed bunkers. Making the course playable for golfers of all levels, there are four tee boxes to choose from and generously wide fairways. Legends Club in Prior Lake

ship 18-hole course with ponds, doglegs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good management, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully-public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered throughout the course, such as the pondprotected par-3 and a hole with a postage stamp-shaped green. No Pain, No Vein! Surgical Vein Stripping A Thing Of The Past

A

n estimated 60% of women and men suffer from vein problems. Varicose veins are large, bulging v ei n s th at ar e of ten v i s i bl e on th e s k i n s u r fac e although the majority are located below the skin surface and only visible with help of an Ultrasound. They are weak or damaged blood vessels that cause poor circulation of blood, causing symptoms in the legs such as aching, burning, cramping, tiredness, restlessness and swelling. Left untreated, they may result in complications such as blood clots, frequent skin infections and poorly healing leg ulcers. “Varicose veins and venous insufficiency are one of the most common conditions that affect adults,” says Dr. Gupta of Vein Clinic PA, 470 W. 78th Street, Suite 250 in Chanhassen, “and yet many patients go undiagnosed or untreated due to misconceptions by the public and even by the medical community.” Dr. Gupta uses Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) in his practice, a cutting edge procedure that utilizes laser technology to treat even the worst veins by sealing them off at their source. Time Magazine recently declared EVLT as “One of the most amazing medical inventions of the year.” The treatment is performed under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office and is virtually painless. There is no scarring, downtime or prolonged recovery period. Dr. Gupta is one of only a few Board Certified Vein Specialists in the nation and his practice is solely devoted to management of vein problems. He has successfully performed over 5000 EVLTs and helped thousands of patients, e v e n t h o s e patients who e x p e r i e n c e d failed treatments such as vein stripping, injection sclerotherapy or radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure), escape the discomfort and embarrassment associated with this all too common problem. He states that the new laser treatment is now the current standard of care and the procedure is covered by almost all insurance companies, including Medicare and MHCP.

Further, he states that fall and winter are the busiest times of the year since many patients have already met their deductibles. Now is the perfect time to get an evaluation and ultrasound, because insurance approval and treatment can still be completed by the end of the year.

Varicose veins can cause these symptoms: Aching or pain in the legs Swelling in the legs or ankles Legs that feel heavy or tire easily Legs that feel restless or have cramping Blood clots or skin ulcers in the leg
