Alimagnet Dog Park — The Alimagnet off-leash dog park is in Alimagnet Park, located two blocks north of County Road 42 on County Road 11. EAGAN Cascade Bay – Cascade Bay is the largest outdoor municipal waterpark in the Upper Midwest and features several attractions, including Twin Falls, the Typhoon and Hurricane waterslides, and the Lazy River with Rocky Rapids. LAKEVILLE Lakeville Area Arts Center – Located at 20965 Holyoke Ave. in downtown Lakeville, the center promotes cultural enrichment and artistic experiences for the entire community by offering many youth and adult art classes as well as a variety of theatrical productions. MAY Ironman Bike Ride — Held annually in Lakeville, the 2012 ride will be held on the first Sunday in May. The Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride was established in 1967 and is the longest running century bike ride in Minnesota. SEPTEMBER Burnsville Fire Muster â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Over a five-day stretch, Fire Muster features wine tasting, beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities, emergency personnel demonstrations, food and beverages from local restaurants, a community

parade, and, of course, the fire truck parade that started it all. Burnsvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual community celebration began officially in 1980, evolving from a smaller, neighborhood-based activity. During the late 1970s, Burnsville resident and fire equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends entertained children each summer by displaying his collection at what was then known as Diamondhead Mall, capping the day with a short parade of equipment down Nicollet Avenue. The Fire Muster, which is held after Labor Day, celebrated its 30 anniversary in 2009. Lakevilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Art Festival â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Lakeville Art Festival is held the third weekend in September in downtown Lakeville on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center, located at 20965 Holyoke

LAKEVILLE The city of Lakeville has more than 1,100 acres of protected park and conservation land, including 54 neighborhood and community parks featuring playgrounds, open air shelters, biking and walking trails and athletic complexes. The city also features 18 conservation areas, five greenways and 100 miles worth of nature trails. Among the jewels of Lakeville’s park system is Ritter Farm Park, a sprawling 340-acre community park located at 19300 Ritter Trail. Golf Courses Dakota County There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a ninehole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an additional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Another short course is Cleary Lake Golf Course, part of the 1,045-acre Cleary Lake Regional Park, southwest of Burnsville in Scott County. It has a par-3 length, 9-hole golf course and driving range. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Page 26

Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. A creek that bisects the course comes into play on many of the holes. The terrain undulates, with the back portion of the course mostly on a raised section that makes for some blind shots. Valleywood is a championship 18-hole course with ponds, doglegs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good management, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully-public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered throughout the course, such as the pondprotected par-3 and a hole with a postage stamp-shaped green. Golfers looking for the full country club feel need look no further than the south-of-the-river area. Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area.

Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington challenges golfers with water, sand traps and plenty of changes in elevation. Designed by golf course architect Kevin Norby, this 18-hole, par 72 layout with multiple tees offers a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels. It has 185 acres of rolling terrain, wooded areas, natural wetlands, and water hazards on 14 different holes. Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville features stately pines, pristine wetlands and is accentuated with seven ponds, which create challenging water hazards. This 18-hole, par-71 course has three sets of tees ranging from 4,805 to 6,306 in yardage and offers gently rolling hills and natural reclaimed Minnesota wetlands to challenge all levels of golfers. Willinger’s Golf Club south of Elko New Market in Webster has daily-fee golf on 18-holes that tests golfers’ abilities in a scenic, natural environment. There is plenty of water, expansive bunkers and mature forest. The course measures 6,809 yards from the tournament tees. Four sets of tee boxes per hole enable golfers of all levels to enjoy the course. The Meadows at Mystic Lake, an 18-hole championship golf course, is billed as the Midwest’s most spectacular golf destination.

Golf Digest ranked it last year as one of the top 10 new courses in the country. Golfers experience bent grass fairways, tees and greens, 13 holes with water, 80 bunkers, 20 fountains and large greens. The Wilds Golf Course in Prior Lake, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, has 150-foot elevation changes, water in play on nearly half of the holes, and more than 70 strategically placed bunkers. Making the course playable for golfers of all levels, there are four tee boxes to choose from and generously wide fairways. Legends Club in Prior Lake features a 30-acre lake, cascading creeks, scenic wetlands, deep ponds and dramatic topography, Legends is more than a stunning 18-hole daily-fee golf course; the 7,046-yard, par-72 layout provides a haven for native plants and wildlife. Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville is built on 180 acres of rolling hills with shining ponds and mature trees. This 18hole championship course provides enjoyment for golfers of all abilities with five sets of tee markers. Heritage Links Golf Club in Lakeville is an 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course. The front nine has a links feel to it with water and rolling terrain, according to its Web site. The back nine is more wooded, lined with trees, water, bunkers and great elevation changes. The course has 45 bunkers, and water comes into play on 16 of 18 holes. Heritage Links has four different sets of tees, ranging from 5,145 to 6,672 yards.
