Communities host holiday events across the southern metro APPLE VALLEY Gingerbread houses Families can spend an afternoon making glamorous gingerbread houses on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Apple Valley Community Center. After assembling cardboard houses, families will decorate the houses with candy canes, pretzels, marshmallows and other treats. Cost is $30 per family and all supplies are included in the cost. Breakfast with Santa Children ages 3-10 are invited to spend an hour with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Apple Valley

Community Center. Kids and their families can visit with Santa while enjoying special treats sponsored by McDonald’s of Apple Valley. Following breakfast, children can take part in holiday activities, crafts, games, and have their picture taken with Santa. Three one-hour “Breakfast with Santa” sessions will be held: at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Cost is $9 per child and the registration deadline is Nov. 29. The 12th annual Winter Lighting Ceremony is set for Wednesday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. outdoors on the plaza of the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, located just west of Nicollet Avenue and north of 126th Street. Join in the countdown as the switch is flipped bringing nearly 150,000 mini-lights and more than 225 streetlight snowflakes in the Heart of the City to life. This year the winter lighting program features LED lights, which will result in approximately 90 percent less energy cost for the program. The lighting program is sponsored and paid for by the Burnsville Community Foundation, a non-profit organization that serves to improve, enhance and beautify the city of Burnsville. Funding is through contributions to the foundation from area businesses and citizens.

Old Fashioned Holiday

Holz Farm in Eagan will host an Old Fashioned Holiday from noon to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5. Christmas in the Village

Warrior to Citizen Cookie Walk

Walk through the historical village buildings at the Dakota County Fairgrounds, 4008 220th St. W., Farmington, that are all decorated with lights inside and out. Draft horses will draw trolleys and give visitors a ride around the village with a costumed guide. Mrs. Claus will be in the Post Office so letters can be written to Santa. In the Print Shop, visitors can write letters to our armed forces personnel. There will be cooking in the Harris House, Christmas trees in all the buildings, choirs and individuals will provide holiday music in the church. Drive through the village any evening during the month of December and see buildings decorated with lights. Admission is $3 for adults ages 13 and older; $2 for children ages 4 - 12 years, and free for children under 3 years old. $10 per car. Christmas in the Village runs Dec. 4-5 and Dec. 11-12, 1 to 8 p.m.

The public is invited to attend a holiday cookie walk fundraiser. The open house-format event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at T.C. Davis Manor Bed & Breakfast, 520 Oak St., Farmington. The house will be decorated in full festive Victorian holiday splendor. Why: To celebrate, socialize and raise money to support local military families and Farmington Warrior to Citizen programs throughout the year. A $10 minimum donation will be collected. Cookie walk participants are invited to bring two nonreturnable plates of holiday cookies to share from a family recipe or even store-bought or boxed cookies (Approximately two dozen or two platefuls). Each person will leave with a large tray of beautifully decorated holiday cookies. The first cookie tray will be used for the cookie-walk party and the second tray will fill baskets to be hand-delivered to local military families during the holiday season.

Bed and breakfast owner Lisa Bolduc has graciously offered her business as a meeting place for the fundraiser. Take in the lovely ambience of the historic Victorian home decorated for the holidays while enjoying some warm Victorian teas. TC Davis Bed & Breakfast offers special luncheon and dessert teas by appointment for the holidays and throughout the year. Start a new cookie walk fundraiser tradition with friends and support local military families.

LAKEVILLE Santa and puppets Schiffelly Puppets will be presenting Santa and puppets at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, 20965 Holyoke Ave., from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The puppets promise to put everyone into the Christmas spirit as they present “No Nose for Rudolph.” After the show, guests are invited to stay for cookies and photos with Santa.
