Communities host holiday events across the southern metro APPLE VALLEY Gingerbread houses Families can spend an afternoon making glamorous gingerbread houses on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Apple Valley Community Center. After assembling cardboard houses, families will decorate the houses with candy canes, pretzels, marshmallows and other treats. Cost is $30 per family and all supplies are included in the cost. The registration deadline is Nov. 27 and space is limited; for more information, call Apple Valley Parks and Recreation at (952) 953-2300.

Breakfast with Santa Children ages 3-10 are invited to spend an hour with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Apple Valley

Community Center. Kids and their families can visit with Santa while enjoying special treats sponsored by McDonald’s of Apple Valley. Following breakfast, children can take part in holiday activities, crafts, games, and have their picture taken with Santa. Three one-hour “Breakfast with Santa” sessions will be held: at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Cost is $9 per child and the registration deadline is Nov. 29. The 12th annual Winter Lighting Ceremony is set for Wednesday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. outdoors on the plaza of the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, located just west of Nicollet Avenue and north of 126th Street. Join in the countdown as the switch is flipped bringing nearly 150,000 mini-lights and more than 225 streetlight snowflakes in the Heart of the City to life. This year the winter lighting program features LED lights, which will result in approximately 90 percent less energy cost for the program. The lighting program is sponsored and paid for by the Burnsville Community Foundation, a non-profit organization that serves to improve, enhance and beautify the city of Burnsville. Funding is through contributions to the foundation from area businesses and citizens.

Old Fashioned Holiday

Holz Farm in Eagan will host an Old Fashioned Holiday from noon to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5. This free event will celebrate Christmas at the farm 1940s style, with hayrides, a bonfire, s’mores, organ music, craft activities and live reindeer.
