Festival offers weekend of fine art and entertainment Ninth annual Lakeville Art Festival runs Sept. 17-18 by Andrew Miller THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

Guests at this year’s Lakeville Art Festival can help create a lasting monument at the city’s arts center. Each year, the festival offers guests the chance to participate in a community art project. This year’s project will see the creation of three, 8-foottall, mosaic-tile-adorned totem poles, which later will be installed in the foyer of the Lakeville Area Arts Center. The community art project reflects the driving idea behind the Lakeville Art Festival, according to festival director Shelly Carney. “Community is a big piece of it,” she said. “The idea is that art can be a part of our community, and creativity can be a part of everyday life.” For the ninth year, the festival will offer a weekend of fine art, food and entertainment on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center. This year’s theme is “Soar Into Art.” About 60 artists will be displaying and selling their artwork during the two days of festivities Sept. 17-18, and the event gives fest-goers the chance to get up close and personal with the artists and their craft. “They can actually sit down and speak with the artists – that is such a huge part of purchasing

In recent years, the festival offered the Literary Corner, where authors read from and signed their books. This year, the festival’s literary component comes with a visual twist: Rachel Allen Dillon, author and illustrator of “Through Endangered Eyes,” will conduct participatory art workshops for kids, demonstrating the dot-painting technique she uses. The community art project has two components this year – the totem poles and, by a bit of serendipity, birdhouses. Materials will be provided for fest-goers paint and decorate the more than 200 donated birdhouses, and they can then take their File photo creations home with them.
