Pan-O-Prog offers fun for everyone Celebration is Lakeville’s premiere festival by Aaron M. Vehling Sun Thisweek

Pan-O-Prog is a quintessential Lakeville festival, a coming together of various types of people from all over the 38-square-mile city’s different styles of neighborhoods. Whether people are from the suburban north or the rural south, residents will gather from July 1 through 8 in the city’s historic downtown for a festival of more than 50 events centered on parades, a carnival, scores of entertainment and food and beverage options that define the city as a cut above its peers. The celebration, which began as the Panorama of Progress to promote the viability of the city’s Airlake Industrial Park in 1967, provides dozens upon dozens of events designed to keep those of all ages entertained. Live music from G.B. Leighton, the Gear Daddies and area orchestras will populate the scene, along with rides, sales at downtown shops and a chance at some good old-fashioned bingo.

So grab a Kevin Bungert-designed Pan-O-Prog button for couple dollars and enjoy special discounts and access. New events include the University of Minnesota Alumni Band at 7:30 p.m. July 2 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, across from Aronson Park. The Alumni Band consists of 60 alumni, friends and current students of the U of M band program. Another new event the Minnesota Sports Zone, billed as “a variety of games, challenges and giveaways coordinated by some of your favorite Minnesota sports teams.” It runs from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 6, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 7. The parades, fireworks and Beer, Brats and Bingo are among the most popular events of Pan-O-Prog. The Orchestra in the Park performance this year will be at 7 p.m. in Antlers Park. In the event of rain, the concert will be held at Kenwood Trail Middle School.

Pan-O-Prog, from 2B of revelers. Experience this at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 6. Stop by one of the many food and beverage vendors on your way. The Grand Parade kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 7. It runs along Holyoke Avenue in downtown Lakeville followed a 4:45 p.m. pre-parade performance. Event organizers estimate about 15,000 people line up to take in the 135-float strong parade. It provides two hours of solid entertainment for the whole family. Grand marshals of the parade are John Enggren and, in an honorary role, his late father, Jerry. Beer, Brats and Bingo is exactly what it sounds like: an opportunity to enjoy a fun game accompanied by a tasty brat and washed down with some refreshing brew. Registration is from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at this Thursday, July 5, event. Bingo starts at 7 p.m. Cards are $10 each or three for $20. The final game (“Blackout”) starts at 11:15 p.m. Babe’s Music Bar in downtown Lakeville turns its parking lot into a large concert space on Friday and Saturday of Pan-O-Prog. On Friday, July 6, G.B. Leighton fans can catch up with him at the bar from

8 p.m. to midnight. Leighton is known for his high energy shows that includes tunes his legion of fans know like “Pickle Park,” “County Road,” and “Acapulco Night” and covers of artists like Van Morrison and the Bo Deans. The following night, the Gear Daddies play at the same time. The band is known for its hit “Zamboni,” which featured in at least two major motion pictures and on the show “Malcolm in the Middle.” Longtime and even casual fans likely will also recall some of their other classic songs, including “Color of Her Eyes,” “Drank So Much,” and “Stupid Boy.” The July 4 fireworks show draws a huge number of people looking to participate in one of America’s storied traditions. Gather at North High School at 6:30 p.m. to take part in some pre-display events, or show up shortly after dusk to witness the fireworks. Pan-O-Prog offers those and many more events, a little something for everyone. Through the eyes of a child Events for young people infuse Pan-O-Prog by Tad Johnson Sun Thisweek

Fun for children of all ages abounds during Pan-O-Prog. Following is a list of some of the highlighted events for children: Fun Fair – The Fun Fair will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 5; noon to 10 p.m. Friday, July 6; and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 7, in the Lakeville Area Arts Center parking lot. Inflatable playthings are the main attraction including a trampoline, mechanical surf board and HIPPO-World’s Largest Inflatable Water Slide. The event includes an exotic petting zoo with all kinds of animals featured, including kangaroo, monkey, alligator, porcupine, armadillo and even pony rides. Young people can try their hands and feet on the rock climbing wall, water wars, carnival games and crafts. Unlimited inflatable ride wristband $15/day good for all inflatable games and hippo water slide; $1 tickets will be sold

Children’s Moonlight Bowl – A special time will be set aside for young people at Lakeville Family Bowl from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 7. Baby Crawl-a-Thon – This entertaining race will be held at the Lakeville Senior Center at 10 a.m. Parents may register their little ones to take part in the crawl at 9:30 a.m. Ribbons and trophies will be awarded to the winners and participants. Pedal Tractor Pull and Big Wheel Rally – Young people can use their leg power in two events Thursday, July 5. The Big Wheel Rally races will start at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. at Primrose School of Lakeville North (163rd and Ipava). Age categories include Mini Wheels for 2- and 3-year-olds, 3and 4-year-olds, 5-year-olds, 6-year-olds. See Children, 10B

Children, from 8B In switching over from the plastic variety of wheeled machines to metal, the Pedal Tractor Pull will start at 5:30 p.m., with registration at 5 p.m. in the Southfork Center parking lot. Age categories include those for ages 4-11 and an added feature for those ages 12- to 17-year-olds. Prizes will be awarded. Pet Show – The annual Pet Show, which always draws a large crowd of young people, will start at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at Antlers Park. Event registration is at 9:30 a.m. Contestants must be age 12 and under. Among the categories are: Most Unusual Pet, Most Colorful Animal, Best Dressed Pet, Softest Animal and Best Animal Trick. More information can be gathered by calling Janet Ryan at (952) 440-8222. Youth Play Day and Ping Pong Drop – This event will start at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 6, at Aronson Park. It will include music, singing, dancing and more led by the Splatter Sisters. The Ping Pong Drop for ages 12 and under will follow the concert at 1:30 p.m. Then there will be a Lakeville Puppet Theater Show for ages 4 and under at 2:15 p.m. and Mini Olympic Team Relays will be for those 12 and under, for which teams will be selected that day.
