Music lovers have plenty to look forward to at the Minnesota Zoo this summer. The annual summer concert series Music in the Zoo features more than 30 concerts in the Apple Valley zoo’s 1,450-seat outdoor Weesner Family Amphitheater. The series kicks off June 14 with a performance by pop-rock band The Go-Go’s on their Ladies Gone Wild reunion tour, and concludes Aug. 25 with a show from Celtic rockers Gaelic Storm. Between those two dates music fans will find concerts catering to a variety of tastes. Some notable acts in this year’s lineup include blues guitarist Taj Mahal (June 29), Hasidic reggae artist Matisyahu (June 30), folk rock duo Indigo Girls (July 13), and R&B stars Boyz II Men (Aug. 18). Also appearing at the zoo this summer are the Monkees, who will be performing two concerts on consecutive nights July 1 and 2 as part of the vintage pop band’s 45th anniversary tour. The full concert schedule is at www.mnzoo.org/musicinthezoo. Tickets for all the concerts went on sale earlier

The Monkees’ 45th anniversary tour is making a stop at the Minnesota Zoo for two shows July 1 and 2 as part of the summer-long Music in the Zoo outdoor concert series. Ticket prices and a full Music in the Zoo schedule are at www.mnzoo.org/musicinthezoo. this month and are available through Ticketmaster.com and at all Ticketmaster locations. Most tickets are in the $30-$50 range. An added perk of the concerts: Though the shows don’t begin seating until 7

p.m., ticket holders get admission to the zoo at 4 p.m., affording plenty of time to take in the zoo’s various and sundry animal exhibits. —Andrew Miller

Second annual Minnesota Soybean Festival to be held May 21 Event celebrates sustainability by Laura Adelmann THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

Contests, events, and food and exhibitors will all be a part of the second annual Minnesota Soybean Festival in Farmington on May 19-21. Intended to promote sustainabilty and green living, the free festival kicks off May 19 at 5 p.m. with an event featuring a lucky winner getting to dump soybeans on Farmington Mayor Todd Larson’s head. Competitions will take place during the event, including a soybean cooking competition, soybean photography contest and the Big Fat Bean Tennis Tournament. At noon Saturday, a Henry Ford Soybean Parade will wind its way through downtown Farmington.

In addition to the traditional marching bands, the parade will feature current and antique farming equipment, bands, dance troupes, electric and hybrid vehicles and Ford vehicles from 1941 or later. From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, local businesses will hold a Sustainable World Street Market featuring handmade and renewable goods from local artisans. Patrons can also learn about green building techniques and see organic, healthy products, homemade crafts and buy products from local producers of cheese and other foods. The Dakota County Historical Society will have displays of historical exhibits and musicians will perform from noon until midnight on Saturday. Locally grown talent is also set to be celebrated during the “Soybean Idol contest, set for May 19 at

Celt’s Pub. Contestants competed throughout April and May, with the top three finalists set to receive cash prizes and prize packages from area businesses that night. If they desire, the finalists will have an opportunity to sing on the festival’s stage May 21. In a news release, festival chair Vida Raine said organizers want the festival to be a platform for original unsigned artists, who will gain from the experience and exposure. “We want our festival to be a launching point for unsigned, original artists in the Minnesota music scene to something larger, she said. For more information about the festival, visit www.mnsoybeanfestival. com.

Mid-Summer Faire applications due May 13; band lineup announced by Tad Johnson THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

ďż˝ ďż˝

The deadline for applications to participate in the Rosemount Leprechaun Days Mid-Summer Faire is Thursday, May 19 for Rosemount organizations and June 1 for all others. The event is a opportune time for merchants and businesses to market themselves and sell merchandise or for service groups to use as a fundraiser. The Mid-Summer Faire draws thousands of people to Central Park in Rosemount, 2893 145th St. W., each year for the merchant and vendor food and services booth, carnival rides, music from 7-11 p.m. each night and fireworks on Saturday night. This year’s festival will feature to high-energy musical acts that organizers expect will draw large crowds. Friday night’s band will

be the six-member Pop Rocks, which will feature some of the biggest dance party hits of today, the rockin’ ’80s and the ’70s disco age. Pop Rocks’ show is part arena rock and part Broadway musical with a dazzling light show and vibrant costumes. Saturday night’s musical act is an encore performance from last year with one of the Midwest’s most popular acts - the Johnny Holm Band. Johnny Holm attracts loyal followers with his lively, feel-good music in the same vein as Jimmy Buffet. It’s no wonder that Johnny covers many of Jimmy’s songs along with recognizable favorites from Van Morrison, Elvis and Billy Joel. The band also has penned some tunes over its decades-long career that have become anthemic

crowd favorites. The dates for this year’s Mid-Summer Faire are 5-11 p.m. Friday, July 29 and 1-11 p.m. Saturday, July 30. Set-up time runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 29. Businesses or groups interested in being part of the Mid-Summer Faire can find forms at the website www. RosemountEvents.com and clicking on Leprechaun Days, then Mid-Summer Faire. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, contact Mike Bouchard, Mid-Summer Faire chairperson, at (651) 423-4603, or Sonja Honl, Rosemount Parks and Recreation Department, at (651) 3226010.
