TERRI DEAN Owner/Publisher TravelHost Albuquerque

A labor of love and a desire to highlight the people, places, and things that make our state special have been the driving force that is bringing this publication to fruition. After an 11 year career in television media, it is a privilege to now have this opportunity to share information with our travelers who choose to come here to spend time. My wish for you is that you will find places, have experiences, and meet people that touch your heart and make you want to return again and again! This vision would not be a reality without the support of loved ones, business partners, and two of the most amazing and talented women I know. Heather Arnold and Sarah Crichlow. They have not left my side since the inception of this process. Both have an eye for design and possess skill sets that I am in awe of. I am grateful to have them with me on this journey. Fall in New Mexico is a favorite for many. Our amazing blue skies create a spectacular back drop for the hundreds of balloons that take flight in October. Couple this with the fragrance of green chili roasting in the air and an abundance of things to taste and experience, and you are in for a treat! We have done our best to create a user friendly resource in this publication and hope it will serve you well! Come back often and, experience all New Mexico has to offer!

To ask for both, the answer is, “Christmas.” • Santa Fe is the highest capital city in the United States at 7,000 feet above sea level.

FEATURE / BALLOON FIESTA

THE FIESTA

Nothing prepares you for the wonder that is the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Each fall, hundreds of balloons and hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the Land of Enchantment to be a part of something truly spectacular. It’s the most photographed event on earth, and if you’ve ever been, you understand why. The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta has been enchanting guests from around the world for over 45 years. What started as a small gathering of 13 balloons in a mall parking lot in 1972 has grown into the largest hot air ballooning event in the world. In 2016, the fiesta registered nearly 600 balloons and more than 1,000 balloon pilots. Attending the Balloon Fiesta is not for the faint of heart, however. You will get up well before sunrise, battle crowds and traffic, and you must prepare yourself for the possibility of a red flag – which means you’ll have to do it all over again another day. You see, the balloons will not fly if the wind is higher than 12 mph, or if there is lighting or rain. But ask anyone who has witnessed a mass ascension, and they are sure to tell you it’s worth the effort! Here are a few tips for maximizing your Balloon Fiesta Experience: 1. Plan, plan plan. Buy your tickets ahead of time, check the weather, and arrange for transportation (be sure to look into the Park and Ride option – it’s worth every penny). 2. Dress in layers. October mornings are quite chilly, but once the sun rises it warms up quickly. 3. If you are taking little ones, bring a stroller or wagon. Bundle them up in hats, blankets and gloves and hand them a cup of hot cocoa as you enter the gates. 4. Prepare yourself for a large crowd, which means long lines at food & vendor booths, bathrooms, etc. The “midway” can get especially hectic – keep track of your people, it’s easy to get separated. 5. Go out for a big New Mexico style breakfast afterwards, and then clear the afternoon for a nap! 6. If there is a red flag, your tickets will be good for another day. Don’t give up…like we said, it’s worth it!

FEATURE / ABQ BIOPARK

ABQ BIOPARK The Albuquerque Biological Park, often referred to as the BioPark, is made up of four separate facilities: an aquarium, botanical garden, Tingley Beach, and the Rio Grande Zoo. A small train system connects the four sections of the BioPark providing a fun and easy way to travel between attractions. A few tips for your visit: 1. Plan ahead by downloading a map of the Albuquerque BioPark attractions. 2. If you plan on visiting more than one of the four attractions at the Albuquerque BioPark, be sure to consider the combo admission. 3. If you have a zoo membership from another city, be sure to ask about any discounts at the ticket office.

32|FALL 2017

4. Allow about three hours to visit the zoo, two hours to explore the botanical garden, and an hour to tour the aquarium. I would also prioritize the attractions in that order. If you run out of time to visit the aquarium, it wouldn’t be as devastating as missing the zoo or the botanical garden! 5. The Travel Channel recently called the Albuquerque BioPark’s Botanical Garden the fifth best in the country, and I highly recommend trying to fit it into your visit to the ABQ BioPark! 6. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the zoo’s shady park area. By Shutterbug Sage, U.S. travel blogger. Visit her blog at www.shutterbugsage.com

FEATURE / ABQ BIOPARK

The Albuquerque BioPark consists of the Rio Grande Zoo, the Botanic Gardens, the Aquarium, and Tingley Beach. If you want to visit all the stops in one day, your best option is to purchase the BioPark combo ticket, which is $12 for adults, $5 for kids ages 3-12. For a ticket to just the zoo, or just the Aquarium and Botanic Gardens, the cost is $7 for adults, $3 for kids ages 3-12.

TURQUOISE Turquoise is the most colorful gemstone in the world. The journey to discover your turquoise treasure will be filled with choices from thousands of pieces of turquoise jewelry and art.

All the colorful salespeople and artists will be glad to inform you how the pretty turquoise jewelry matches your eyes, skin tone and new Southwest outfit. Your journey will take you into small boutique shops,

fancy galleries, an individual artist workshop or maybe a street corner conversation with someone displaying their turquoise art on a sidewalk blanket.

This is the great state of New Mexico! Take time to experience our multi-cultural heritage. Listen and enjoy the many histories, tall tales and personal stories that each salesperson and artist has to share. It is all of these experiences that will make your turquoise journey unique.

Tips for Buying Turquoise Turquoise is a global gemstone that is found in China, Mexico, United States, Egypt, Iran and several other countries. The artists that use turquoise can buy turquoise from any of these country sources to set in their art.

1. Condition: The word NATURAL refers to a turquoise cabochon that is natural. A natural stone has no hardness, density or color gain added to it from oils, waxes, plastics or other scientific techniques. Stabilized and enhanced turquoises are not NATURAL. 2. Mine Source: Turquoise mines are given names such as Bisbee, Number Eight and

Lone Mountain. Famous mine sources are more expensive. Color: The dark brighter colors of blue and/or green are rarer and more expensive. 3. Matrix: The dots and lines in a turquoise stone are called matrix. Matrix is graded according to how aesthetic and evenly placed the lines and dots. Spiderweb is the rarest matrix.

4. Clarity: The dark color of blue and the more clear a stone is of matrix is the rarest. 5. Law: Federal and New Mexico Laws state all buyers should get all information about your purchase in writing. Is the stone natural? What is the mine source? Everyone touring the southwest should enjoy finding that special turquoise memory.

FEATURE / ABQ TRAM

ABQ TRAM The Sandia Peak Tramway runs a 2.7 mile long course, making it one of the longest tram rides in the world. Since opening in 1966, Albuquerque’s most iconic attraction has taken more than 11 million passengers up over 3,000 ft. to enjoy the stunning views. The ride offers you the opportunity to enjoy some pretty spectacular views of the surrounding desert and mountains. A summer visit is even more attractive as the drastically cooler temps at the top (vs. the brutal heat of the surrounding desert) make it a welcome summer escape! As you climb 7.2 miles from an elevation of 6,000 feet to the peak at 10,378, you will go through several different ecosystems comprised of diverse plant life. From desert scrub, to tall ponderosa pines, to beautiful aspens which glitter gold in the fall, you will basically see a bit of everything along the way. The views at sunset are breathtaking, particularly due to the red cast over the Sandia mountains, hence the naming of the mountains “Sandia” after the Spanish term for watermelon. Both summer and winter recreational activities at the top are plenty, with miles of hiking and mountain biking trails in the summer, and downhill skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. And during the fall, you can enjoy the mesmerizing changing color of the aspens. Overall, a ride on the Sandia Peak tramway is one of the best ways to take in the majestic sights of the area .

Staying Fit While You Travel Lori Eanes D.O, Contributor You’ve checked in and settled into your hotel. After scanning the TV for all of your favorite channels, do you really want to spend all of your free time as a lounging lizard? Of course not! You want to remain as spry and light as the agile road runner. If you’re vising the Southwest for the first time, you’ll quickly notice the expansive vistas. The bright outdoors are perfect for a brisk morning walk, a strenuous hike or a bike ride that challenges even the most sturdy bike enthusiast. Exercise, of all types, is known for its’ health improving benefits. This includes reducing heart disease, lowering blood pressure, improving diabetes and even preventing certain cancers. Most hotels have a fitness room with basic cardio equipment. However, there are simple effective exercises that

you can do within the confines of your indoor space, rain or shine. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is identified as the most effective fitness routine for maintaining both endurance and strength. Here is a simple routine that you can do in your while on the road, in less than 30 minutes. Start with sets of 10 each and move quickly between each exercise. 1. Plies – strengthen the quadriceps, the body’s largest muscle group 2. Bicycles – Increase heart rate while strengthening abdominal muscles. 3. Tricept Dips – Strengthen the back and arms. 4. Mountain Climbers – Improve endurance. 5. Calf Raise – Strengthen lower legs and ankles. 6. Push Ups – Tone up the chest and arms.

7. Cat Stretch – Increase flexibility 8. Downward Dog – Stretch for strength 9. Head to Knee – Release tension 10. Prayer Pose to honor your body, the gift of movement and good health.

Old Town Farm is bordered on the west by the Madre de Duranes, but its northern edge is I-40…along which runs a paved bike path with direct access to

• 175 miles of bike trails, bike lanes and bike boulevards, • Various terrain – flat, gentle grades, steep grades, paved, sandy, rocky…. • Bike clubs for mountain bikers, racers, fatbike enthusiasts, custom cruisers, tourers, • Bike rentals, Zagster stations, hotel bikes, • Bike tours around Albuquerque – and you can even put your bike on the Railrunner train to Santa Fe.

After three decades of operating Old Town Farm as a horse boarding and training facility, owners Linda and Lanny began transitioning from horses to produce by converting horse pens into garden plots. As the farm-to-table idea became more popular, surplus from the farm’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) led to weekend sales at the Downtown Farmers Market. Where, it turned out, a great number of people came by bicycle.

People began biking in for vegetables. Next came the idea to create a coffee shop. That became Bike In Coffee, where sometimes as many as 200 riders drop by on weekends for garden fresh food, smoothies and of course, coffee. This goes to show just how large and vibrant the cycling community here is and why 40 Albuquerque is Cycling City, USA. The city offers:

friend with a disability rolling in on a recumbent bike with hand pedals; bikers with tiny tots in attached trailers; tandem bikes; bike dogs in handlebar baskets; kids on BMX bikes; meet-up groups relaxing before heading 3 out on their scheduled rides; neighborhood riders biking in, grabbing a cup, and biking out with a backpack full of veggies or farm-fresh eggs.

Rd.

Today, most of the small farms along the river have become neighborhoods, parks and open space. A few – like Old Town Farm - remain. Which brings us to – bicycling?

Old Town Farm by way of a gate formerly used by equestrians. The I-40 trail connects to the Bosque Bike Trail a half mile west. That trail runs north and south along the Rio Grande for more than twenty miles. Just south is Mountain Road – a citydesignated Bike Boulevard (18 mph). Bike superhighways…

Atrisco

Old Town Farm is a portal into the layered tapestries of history, culture, tradition and subtle change that make Albuquerque interesting. Long before the Europeans came in the mid-1500s, this land was farmed by the people of the Tiguex Puebloan province that stretched along miles of the middle Rio Grande valley. They created an irrigation system that is now believed to be the oldest registered irrigation ditch in the United States.

CHEF JOY / TOP FIVE COFFEE SHOPS

CHEF JOY’S

TOP 5

Coffee Shops

I am in love with coffee. Without it, I would not be able to function at the level I do. There are days I

work up to 20 hours and well, coffee saves me. Here are my Chef picks for the best Coffee Shops in town:

THE BREW

Downtown | 311 Gold Ave SE, 87102 I love the “Brew Brothers” as I affectionately refer to them. Their coffee brand is VILLA MYRIAM of which is obtained from their grandfathers farm in Columbia and roasted here in ABQ. There shop is a quaint little place with seating, couches, tables and benches that a vast majority of downtowners visit to conduct business or just grab a delicious cup of coffee on their way to work. My favorite is the Café Con Coco with real coconut cream. They also have brewed teas of 8 varieties for those tea lovers.

Zendo

Downtown | 413 2nd St., 87102 I love it’s hip, young artistic vibe and apparently I am not the only one since they are featured in http://www.extracrispy.com/ food/2818/51-of-the-best-coffee-shops-inamerica as one of the best coffee shops in America.

Humble Coffee

Nob Hill | 4200 Lomas Blvd, 87110 Tiny but cool business vibe with the rustic blue counter and lavender honey coffee! Yes, I said it, and it is amazing. I love the culinary approach to their flavor profiles and cool coffee blends.

40|FALL 2017

Michael Thomas Coffee Roaster

Nob Hill | Silver and Carlisle Can you say cool, light and bright with hardwood floors and coffee classes! How cool is this! They educate their patrons on coffee flavors, roasting and beans. I love this so much and feel like everyone should take a class and bump up their bean game.

Trifecta Coffee Company

Westside | 413 Montaño Rd NE, 87107 I like the variety of world coffees available to purchase or taste as well as the variety of roasting methods. They also offer pastries with your order.

Food is love and coffee loves you back. - Chef Joy

FEATURE / ABQ GHOST TOURS

ABQ Ghost Tours Often times when people find out I’m a psychic medium I hear things like, “Hey Candice, the guy who owned my car before me died inside of it and I think his Spirit’s still in there, wanna ride? The old woman who gave me this doll says its possessed by aliens, wanna hold it? I heard Old Town is haunted like crazy—wanna go there for your next TravelHost article?” Usually I say no to any request that sounds like a line out of a horror movie—especially because as a black person, I know I’m the first one to go when stuff goes down. All that to say when I first arrived at Ghost Tours of Old Town Albuquerque (GTOTA), I admit I was a little nervous. That fear went away as soon as I met several of the “Ghost Hosts”, aka tour guides, who were friendly and down to earth.

Our Ghost Host for the evening was Charlie, an amazing storyteller, who guided us for an hour and a half on foot around various spots in Old Town telling the history and sightings of “Major Ghosts,” spirits who have been seen by at least three different people. On our tour we visited 4 of these major ghosts in addition to the High Noon Saloon which is known for its poltergeist activity. Each ghost’s story was told in vivid and entertaining detail, which included their history and a fascinating look into the impact of the church, civil war, Wild West, and various scandals and cover-ups. Our group also heard recordings from actual Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) allegedly of the voices of ghosts in Old Town. Though I didn’t see any spirits there were a few places where I felt

chills even though it was 80+ degrees out. The only time I felt uncomfortable was when I stepped wrong off a curb (pro tip: the tours include a lot of walking in dim light on old sidewalks and streets so wear comfortable shoes.) I highly recommend Ghost Tours of Old Town Albuquerque be one of your travel destinations. This one-of-kind tour appeals to all age groups and is very rich with historical information and the chance to see and experience ghosts. Be brave—I promise that unlike your counterparts in the horror movies, you’ll make it out alive. e F a t n a S Santa Fe is New Mexico’s fourth largest city and also its oldest, founded by Spanish colonists in 1610. Today, it serves as the state’s capital as well as an artists’ community with many local galleries, dealers and museums juxtaposed beautifully next to historic and religious sites. For along weekend in Santa Fe, make sure to visit the galleries and the churches that add to this city’s unique flare, and no trip here is complete without a delicious – and likely enormous – plate of traditional New Mexican food. Loretto Chapel

Why It’s Notable: The legend of the Loretto Miraculous Staircase is one of New Mexico’s most famous mysteries. The Loretto Chapel was built for the Sisters of Loretto in the 1800’s. When the two-level chapel was completed, the nuns realized that a traditional staircase wouldn’t fit without taking up a significant portion of seating space. In 1878 the Sisters prayed to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters for a solution. On the final day of their prayer a stranger showed up to the chapel, a carpenter looking for work. He constructed an intricate spiral staircase with two 360 degree turns , no center support structure, and no nails! After completing the staircase, the stranger vanished and was not seen or heard from again. To this day, the staircase is considered an architectural marvel because of its flawless design and functionality. Pro Tips: The Loretto Chapel is now a private museum open 7 days a week where you can see the staircase firsthand. Private parties rent the chapel for their events so be sure to call ahead to see if the museum is open to the public before you visit. Street parking is extremely limited around www.travelhost.com

the chapel so your best bet is to pay for valet parking at the Loretto Inn next door to the chapel or choose one of the other paid parking lots in Old Town that are cheaper but are farther walking distance from the chapel. The design of the chapel was based on the Sainte Chapelle in France so there’s more to see than just the staircase. The chapel has incredible Gothic architecture, original stained glass from Paris, and beautiful frescoes. An audio tour of the chapel’s history and the legend of the staircase replays every seven minutes so there’s plenty of time to visit the chapel and still explore Santa Fe’s old town which is a mix of art, history, eclectic style, and a very chill vibe. Though the chapel is about an hour away from Albuquerque’s Sunport, the drive is worth it to visit a part of New Mexico’s unique and legendary history.
