2018: the year that was - and life at THOMANN-HANRY®

Perspective

MD Letter

Thomann-Hanry® continue to roll back the years in Regent Street.

It’s said that the years feel as though they pass quicker as you get older and, coming to the end of my 13th year with the company, this certainly seems to be true. In 2005 I introduced façade gommage® to the UK and at the time had no idea what it would grow into. Originally, we simply operated as a façade cleaning company but, as we realised the massive potential for a company that could carry out all kinds of maintenance tasks without scaffolding and with minimal disruption, the company quickly grew. This past year has been no different and whilst it seems just yesterday that we were fighting the ‘Beast from the East’, the year has seen us carry out some of our most important projects and win our most coveted award, while our ongoing rebranding has not only given us a new look, but has re-energised the company from top to bottom. 2018 started with a run of projects, any one of which could have been a lifetime achievement. Somerset House had long been on my radar and having the opportunity to clean and restore such a building was a real honour which leaves me with a great sense of pride every time I pass. The Gresham, Dublin, was our first project in Ireland and the perfect landmark to launch Thomann-Hanry® in a new territory, showing how the benefits of our techniques and approach are compelling - wherever we are in the world. Ready for its 100 year anniversary, Australia House in Strand was cleaned for the second time in just five years, whilst Economist Plaza in St. James’s saw us build our extraction equipment onto mast climbers and utilise an entirely new access methodology… and all of this was before Easter!

Following on from Roxburghe House - our first major project on Regent Street as principal contractor to the Crown Estate - Thomann-Hanry® have been awarded two exciting new projects in this high profile location. Alitalia House, on the south-west corner of Oxford Circus, will soon become a flagship Microsoft store, whilst the flagship Hamleys store will see its façades restored to reflect its iconic status as the world’s most famous toy shop. Thomann-Hanry® were chosen for the high quality of their work and their unique non-scaffold approach. Time and again, previous projects have demonstrated how our patented façade gommage® technology enables work to be completed safely and with the minimum of disruption to retail units and office tenants alike. Works at Alitalia House are projected to take ten weeks, including surveys and reports, façade cleaning, stone restoration, window redecoration, asphalt, lead and slate work. Other projects already completed on Regent Street include TopShop’s flagship store, The Langham Hotel, Roxburghe House and the BBC Headquarters.

Our second depot in Park Royal was refurbished to include a very funky and welcoming canteen and breakout space where our staff can relax and enjoy themselves - all in an industrial-looking, air-conditioned space. Our re-branded look and powerful web presence has led to an influx of new business enquiries and our staff is about to be kitted out with smart new uniform to match. On the social front our spectacular Summer Party, now an established industry event, saw us move to a glamorous and dramatic new location - the rooftop at the Ham Yard Hotel in Soho. Continuing our relationship with Firmdale Hotels, our Christmas Party saw us host an intimate dinner for 30 at The Covent Garden Hotel. 2017 saw us being awarded Runners-up in the Considerate Constructors Scheme Awards but, being a company focused on continual development, we didn’t rest on our laurels. In 2018 we won first place, an accomplishment that recognised the work of the whole team, as well as the ethos of the management. In this, our annual newsletter, you will find out all about 2018 at Thomann-Hanry® - I hope you enjoy it.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor and Sir John Vanbrugh, construction of the Old Naval College at Greenwich began in 1694. Globally renowned not least for its spectacular dome, designed by Sir James Thornhill and dubbed “London’s Sistine Chapel”, today the building is part of a World Heritage Site and home to the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The original Trinity College of Music was founded in 1872,

Restoring interior staircases With modern cleaning products and machinery the task would, in theory, have been relatively straightforward. However, in a building of such architectural and historical significance – and on Portland Stone steps of such an age – Historic England rightly insisted that the entire project was undertaken by hand. Stair treads black with paint, stippled with glue residue and, in places, riven with cracks needed the painstaking, individual application of traditional restoration and cleaning techniques to bring them back to life. With a long track record of restoring the interiors and exteriors of some of Britain’s most iconic Listed buildings, London-based specialists Thomann-Hanry® had the full inhouse skillset to meet all of the challenges presented by the Greenwich project. Experienced stonemasons, a team of specialist operatives fully trained to BICSc standards and highly skilled technicians worked together to achieve stunning effect. After the completion of successful preliminary patch tests, all risers, stone treads and side stringers were meticulously cleaned by hand. Thick, impenetrable layers of paint

merging with the Laban Dance Centre in 2005 – the conservatoire now has over 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students at three campuses across London. Thomann-Hanry® were approached to take on a deceptively challenging task. No fewer than three of the building’s staircases were all in need of serious attention. Carpet glue residue, paint and the inevitable ravages of time had all taken their toll to varying extents and the client’s remit was to restore each of them to their original splendour.

were melted and gently removed. Cracks were opened, pinned with stainless steel bars and filled with Portland restoration mix (lime and Portland dust) – not only to return them to their original glory, but also to prepare them for many more years of constant use. And, where necessary, indents were carved to seamlessly match the existing stone. After decades of concealment under paint and carpet, the subtly unique texture, grain and colour of the Portland Stone steps was visible once again, revealing the spectacular staircases as they first appeared some 300 years ago. Completed in a matter of weeks – and without the intervention of any chemicals or machinery – the Trinity Laban project is a testament to the age-old virtues of traditional cleaning and restoration techniques in a building of outstanding historical and architectural significance. • • • • •

Cabin crew tips

Our funky new canteen

Inside the cabin: An expert Thomann-Hanry® operative reveals the inside story of façade gommage®

It’s no secret that by keeping office stress low, you can increase productivity at work. Happier staff are more productive and more present, both physically and mentally.

Now 32, Thomann-Hanry® cabin operator Matthew Jones came to London from Swansea some 10 years ago in search of a new challenge. Little did he know how profound an effect he would go on to have on the very fabric of his adopted home city… Reflecting on his early apprenticeship, Matthew comments, “Training as a façade gommage® operative is a highly specialised and arduous process. It has to be, given the historical and architectural significance of so many of the buildings we’re lucky enough to work on.” Under the close supervision of an experienced Thomann-Hanry® technician from start to finish, training takes between six months and a year. “We start by working with small portable equipment from scaffolding on inaccessible areas.” he explains. “The next step is to progress to façades which are difficult to damage. Only once the required competence is achieved are we allowed to work on more complicated and delicate façades – still under close supervision. Even once you’ve become a fully-fledged façade gommage® operative, you’re still learning and acquiring new skills. Each job brings its own challenges and demands, which is a big part of why the job is so rewarding. No substrate is easy, but I think perhaps terracotta is the most challenging. On the flipside, restoring Portland Stone can give incredible results, which speak for themselves.”

Newsletter TH®

Thomann-Hanry® management are always looking for new ways to improve their employees’ wellbeing. Despite offering a flexible working hour model with pension contributions, holiday pay, sick pay and the benefit of having a Christmas shut-down, the day to day routine lacked a bit of a sparkle.

Working long, arduous days in hot, confined conditions, the job is not only mentally, but physically demanding. “Meticulous attention to detail is essential.” Matthew observes, “So plenty of drinking water is a must to remain hydrated and fully engaged with what is very delicate work. I also do motocross and lots of regular exercise to stay fit – working extended hours in Personal Protective Equipment calls for high levels of physical fitness.”

Having a little haven in which to unwind during a lunch

Based on corporate colours to keep it within our brand identity, it is the perfect place for staff to refresh and revitalise for the second half of their day which, in turn, increases their creativity, effectiveness and productivity. We launched the new canteen during the World Cup, which saw us enjoying this year’s scorching British summer with many barbecues, ping-pong tournaments and more.

However, as Matthew is quick to point out, the rewards of the job make the tough working conditions more than worthwhile: “Seeing such beautiful historic façades being restored with our help is incredibly rewarding. Revealing a building as it looked many moons ago… there’s nothing quite like it!” And his favourite project? “Having had the privilege of working on so many historical landmarks, it’s really hard to say. I think King’s College, Cambridge was probably one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve been involved with – such a famous, iconic building with so much history behind it…it doesn’t get much better than that.”

A key advantage of façade gommage® over water-based cleaning techniques is that gun shading is less of an issue. However, smooth gun movements and a patient, painstaking approach are still essential to achieve the

spectacular results that Thomann-Hanry® clients have come to expect, as Matthew explains: “As we mainly work on grade listed buildings, it’s vital that we don’t over-clean… after all, façade gommage® was developed to respect the natural characteristics of the delicate materials used on historic buildings.”

or tea break was one of the most inspired management innovations of the year, and the team worked together to bring a funky yet relaxing canteen to life.

New uniforms From red to green Thomann-Hanry® are introducing a new uniform range in 2019 to celebrate the success of our re-brand. Mark Styles, Managing Director of Thomann-Hanry® observed: “After nearly 15 years, it was about time to reinvigorate our corporate apparel, especially with the addition of ‘Restoring Excellence’, our new company tagline.”

Condition surveys are of benefit to everyone involved in managing a property, identifying maintenance and repair requirements, establishing a timescale for works and enabling accurate budgeting - whilst ensuring the building remains safe.

With no existing information available, our client needed to establish whether or not it was possible to restore the building without scaffolding – a decision that would principally depend on the condition of the render and how much of it was ‘blown’.

Thomann-Hanry® regularly carry out surveys, typically from MEWPS. The company employs a CEng MICE MIStructE qualified specialist who, in conjunction with our masons, can carry out invasive investigations with full access capabilities to assess and diagnose all structural issues and client concerns.

We began by building a photo-realistic 3D model, created from the data recorded by our drone. This was then converted into a CAD drawing, allowing us to mark up the defects and provide a complete ‘snapshot’ of the building at that point in time. Carried out from a MEWP, a tap test of the façade using our electronic hammer - which gives us a scientific basis for our report - revealed the façade to be sound, confirming that work could go ahead as planned without any risk of unforeseen costs.

In 2018, Thomann-Hanry® started surveying by drone, allowing us to access previously challenging locations such as rooftops and lightwells. Drone surveys enable the company to build photo-realistic 3D models of these areas from which accurate CAD drawings, the basis of any survey report, can be created.

Since their establishment in the UK in 2006, ThomannHanry® have earned an international reputation for their pioneering work in the restoration of buildings. From historical landmarks such as King’s College, Cambridge and the Bank of England to more modern structures, the company’s patented non-scaffold façade gommage® process, allied to an array of specialist cleaning, renovation and repair solutions for stonework, metal and flooring, has attracted global attention and a portfolio of high profile clients. Accepting the award, Managing Director Mark Styles commented “We’ve worked really hard over the past year to progress from runners-up to the Most Considerate Company winner, and it’s great for all our team’s hard and tireless work to be recognised. We couldn’t be more thrilled with this achievement but, for me, the great thing about being part of Considerate Constructors Scheme is that even if you don’t win, you have made a great step towards improving your standards, culture and behaviour which can only benefit your business.”

Somerset House Where past meets future

refurbishment in 2003. In just six days, some 1,003 square metres of reconstituted stone, render and Portland Stone across two elevations were gently revived and revealed in their original splendour.

Wyndham’s Theatre

Thomann-Hanry® roll back the centuries at one of London’s most iconic historical landmarks.

Wyndham’s, the Gielgud and the Prince of Wales… three evocative names, synonymous with the glamour and prestige of London’s theatreland, have all recently been restored by Thomann-Hanry®.

In addition to cleaning, Thomann-Hanry® were tasked with decoration of windows, restoration of stone / leadwork and pigeon protection, as well as the faithful replacement of balusters, carried out by their in-house team of expert banker stonemasons.

One of London’s largest and most important creative hubs, Somerset House is home to some of the city’s most celebrated names across a wide spectrum of the arts, including the National Youth Orchestra, Courtauld Gallery and Institute and the British Fashion Council. Hosting everything from start-ups and small businesses to the leading lights of contemporary creativity, it is one of London’s most elegant and prestigious venues and an historical landmark recognised the world over.

A barometer of client satisfaction reveals when quotes for subsequent work are requested. With restoration of the South Wing barely completed, Thomann-Hanry® have already been asked to cost further projects at Somerset House, raising hopes that the rest of this historic landmark could soon be returned to its original splendour.

Originally a Tudor palace on the banks of the Thames, immortalised by the artist Canaletto, the building has had a long and colourful history since it was first built in the 1500s. After a period of neglect - and in part a reaction to late 18th century criticism that London had no great public buildings - the original structure was demolished in the 1870s to make way for an imposing Neoclassical building designed by William Chambers. With a design based on Inigo Jones’s drawings for the riverfront of the former building, the North Wing, fronting the Strand, was completed in 1780. The South Wing, meanwhile, incorporated three great arches to enable boats and barges to access landing places within the building – at that time the Thames was not embanked and lapped the building itself.

Designed by prolific theatre architect WGR Sprague, Wyndham’s first opened on 16th November 1899. Situated on Charing Cross Road, this magnificent Grade II* Listed building was built in Modern Renaissance style, with an imposing classical Portland Stone frontage. Inside, the auditorium was constructed on four levels and decorated in Louis XVI style. Other than a restoration of its stunning ceiling in the 1970s, much of the auditorium has been carefully preserved as it was first built, making it an outstanding exemplar of Victorian architecture and design. Cleaning three elevations in just 8 days, Thomann-Hanry® have ensured that the elevations of this fine building do justice to its spectacular historical interior.

Today, all three theatres are owned and run by Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. Impressed by the spectacular results achieved by Thomann-Hanry® at other landmarks such as The Bank of England, The Ritz – Delfont Mackintosh appointed us to stage similar revivals at their theatrical landmarks. Echoing the magic of miraculous scene changes between acts, each theatre façade clean was completed with no scaffolding, minimal disruption and, at around a week in each case, in next to no time. Carried out from a boom-mounted cabin, this unique process projects fine particles under compressed air across the building’s surface, gently erasing decades of accumulated grime.

Before

Gielgud Theatre

The project also included façade remedial works, redecoration to all previously painted and stained surfaces, canopy metalwork redecoration, window repairs and the removal and reinstatement of bird deterrent netting.

Prince of Wales Theatre

It is this South Wing that has recently been returned to its former glory by Thomann-Hanry®. Over an intensive eight week period, some 1,650 square metres of Portland Stone elevations were meticulously cleaned using the company’s patented façade gommage® technique. As opposed to abrasive processes, façade gommage® is perfectly suited to the delicate restoration of historical structures, projecting fine powders under compressed air - not against, but across surfaces, gently rubbing away layers of accumulated dirt and lifting residues away for removal and recycling.

After • Location - Strand, London WC2R 1LA • Listing - Grade I Listed building • Substrate - Portland Stone • Surface area - 1,650 sq. m • Project duration - 8 days cleaning, 8 weeks total project

The rapid eight week turnaround was enabled by the fact that façade gommage®, unlike other cleaning techniques, does not call for the expensive and timeconsuming inconvenience of unsightly scaffolding. Deployed from a boom-mounted cabin, the process is agile, flexible and uniquely mobile.

Using our patented façade gommage® technique, the company wound the clock back over a century at each of these iconic theatre buildings, revealing their glorious frontages as they first appeared.

Located on Shaftesbury Avenue and with 986 seats on three levels, the Gielgud is another WGR Sprague masterpiece. Having opened as the Hicks Theatre in 1906, it was renamed the Globe Theatre in 1909, changing again to its current name in 1994 in honour of Sir John Gielgud, a legendary English actor whose extraordinary career spanned eight decades. First refurbished in 1987, the theatre last underwent an extensive renovation in 2007, when the exterior was clad in scaffolding for months. In stark contrast, the recent cleaning works by Thomann-Hanry® were completed - scaffold-free - in just 8 days, with two elevations and some 1,086 square metres of Portland Stone restored to their pristine original state with minimal disruption to theatre goers and passers-by in the heart of London’s bustling theatreland.

Occupying a landmark corner location in Coventry Street, Leicester Square, the Prince of Wales is actually the oldest of the three theatres, with origins dating back to 1884. However, the current Grade II Listed structure was built in the 1930s, designed by renowned cinema and theatre architect Robert Cromie in classic art deco style. The recent façade clean, stone restoration and redecoration project carried out by us is the first major restoration work since a £7.5 million 11

own cranes in a simple 15 minute operation, avoiding the need for scaffolding and lifting beams completely.

In 2018, the Restoration team has emerged to become a business in its own right, with not only the right personnel, capable of carving, installing and restoring to the highest standards, but also the right facilities. Continued growth requires significant investment and nowhere is our confidence in our Restoration team better demonstrated than in our purchase of a fully certified and industry leading dry extraction system from Italian company Italmecc. Self-cleaning and fully automated, this extraction system removes virtually all contaminants from the air. We’ve coupled this with a silent running compressor from industry leader Atlas Copco, again with world-class filtration, to provide clean breathing air for our air fed helmets.

National Portrait Gallery Thomann-Hanry® surveyed the balusters of the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery from MEWP and allocated a grade to all of the balusters within their survey report. A mould of the balusters was taken and 26 were turned in order to replace the most severely decayed originals. Using our HIAB, balusters were lifted into position to avoid the need for them to be carried over the roof. They were then installed from the internal walkways before being pointed externally from MEWP overnight.

Coupled with good lighting and other initiatives, such as a ban on dry brushing, the workshop annexe at our Park Royal depot is the perfect environment in which to safely cut and carve stone, from corbels and cornices to small indents.

The event was attended by around 120 guests, including facilities managers, architects, property owners, surveyors and property consultants. Attendees included property giants such as JLL, CBRE, Knight Frank and Savills, as well as leading architectural practices and representatives from well-known establishments including The National Gallery, the Chartered Institute of Building and the Reform Club. Delightful canapés and a barbecue were served on the idyllically themed roof terrace, along with fresh summer punches and champagne, available to the guests throughout the evening. Music was provided by the talented guitarist Marcello Constantinou, who played everything from classics to the latest hits, enhancing the enchanting atmosphere.
