INTRODUCTION

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is located at the heart of city, separated from the busy streets of Adelaide. The Garden features 51 hectares of beautiful landscaping, which intergrates a variety of plant-life and architecture. This project aims to highlight the different elements of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, creating a greater understanding of the

large site. Specifics such as the different plant and soil types will also be explored, which will allow for botanists and landscapers a detailed layout of the land. Thus, allowing them to formulate future plans which best suit and compliment the exisiting soil types.

ISSUES AND ANSWERS

Throughout the project many new skills were learnt due to the unfamiliar software of CloudCompare. This software was used to create various dynamic representations of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. However, with learning new skills, there were numerous issues which had to be solved inorder to to create the final sketchfab model. A troubling issue was the use of QGIS, as ‘LAStools’ was unable to draw a connection between the .Las file and the TIFF image. This issue

was resolved by manually georeferencing the TIFF image onto the LiDAR file. This method was initially going to be used to colour the site with a custom RGB vegetation map, however by colouring the point clouds by individually through segmentation, the file was more flexible for editing and colouring.

The Adelaide Botanic Gardens contains nume gardens, which all have their own themes and types. Splitting the site into different sections and garden types are important as each plant have their own environment which maximises growth. This in effect also creates harmony wi each garden, as the plants will grow with othe similarlly appearing plants as they come from same family. TREES

BUILDINGS

Adelaide is known for having iconic trees around the city area which have been planted back in the 1800s. An example of this is the famous ‘Old Moreton Bay Fig east of Adelaide Oval’, which is said to be one of the first trees to be planted by European settlers. Similarly, the Adelaide Botanic Garden features all kinds of trees with from places around the world, such as with Cycads from North America and Araucaria from South America.

Architecture plays a important role within the Botanic Gardens, the buildings recreate specific temperatures and atmospheres of biomes which allow plants from different regions that wouldn’t naturally grow in the current climate. The Bicentennial Conservatory is a prime example of architecture which allow plant growth, as the building is homed to various rainforest plant species. The Conservatory replicates the humidity and dampness of a rainforest through constant temperature readings and water sprinklers. Thus, allowing the housing of endangered plant species.

PH SOIL ANALYSIS

Soil pH is the measure of alkalinity or Acidity of a soil. The importance of the pH level to plant growth is due to the several factors which different soils offer. Some of these factors include the soil nutrient availbility, soil bacteria and toxicity. Soils with high acidity typically are caused by high rainfall and fertilizers. Plants with high maintenace typically have high acidic levels as they thrive in damp areas. Common causes for Alkaline soils are from drought and weathering. Thus, vegetation from arid biomes tend to strive, as they naturally grow in dryer environments. Understanding the pH levels for soils is important for landscapers and gardeners as they need to locate similar soils required for new projects or plants. Which allows the vegetation of each new project to be healthy and grow.
