THOMAS MICHAEL GRADUATE ARCHITECTURE STUDENT I am a 25 years old architecture student at the nuremberg institute of technology. I was reared multilingually in north bavaria by my german father and my brazilian mother since I was born in the USA in 1991 were I also studied during the past year. Architecture for me is an ongoing process in which lifeless materials are activated to live through composition interaction and light. It also means to keep the people in the focus in order to create a project that supports and frames the main project which should always be the life itself. As I am highly dedicated to produce the best quality I like working on difficult tasks no matter if design or engineering single handed or in a team. Other cultures and lifestyles as well as ideas are very appealing to me and I enjoy conversations that inspire to think outside of the box. My strength is being creative, flexible, fast in learning new tools like software and being able to manage uncommon situations thoughtfully and distinctly well.

CLIMBING CENTER IN A PUBLIC PARK The building is a new attraction for climbers and sportlovers in nuremberg. Inspired by the decay of rocks and the dynamic contrast of order and disorder the figure plays with the urban qualities of the plot by emphazising and hiding certain areas. The main goal was to create an extension of the existing. Therefore a landscape was shaped as a longspread wall providing the necessary space for the growing climber scene in Germany.

The mainfunctions of the building consist of the climbing area indoor and outdoor (600sqm), a lounge (100sqm), Hotelrooms (600sqm), a fitnessarea, dressing rooms, toilets and showers as well as a restaurant and a shop. The hotel should be developed in order to satisfy the wishes of climbers and in parts also be disability-friendly. The goal is to exceed the usual building standards in a positive way.

URBAN CONCEPT

Boulderpark im Grünen

The two big buildings in the landscape are complemented by the new integrated volume so that they build a composition in a triangle that frames the close landscape and links it to the distant recreation places. Confidently it cartoons the calm shaped office aside in the south by dissolving it into the edged surfaces of a rock the closer it gets to the north.

INTERIOR LANDSCAPE

INTERIOR LANDSCAPE Carved into the landscape inbetween the hotel and the climbing areas there are different recreation spaces arranged on split-levels. From here the visitor is able to enjoy the overwhelming impression of the playful composition of natural light in the wide open climbinghall. The landscape was formed by folding the horizontal areas of the building into the vertical climbingwalls. Besides the impressive view the people have the ability to climb directly up to the hotelarea on the climbingwall.

[1] ROOF The roof consists of a steelframework that is covered with aluminium sheets that build a contrast to the remaining surfaces. Together with the back of the building it seems to be separate of the remaining composition and floating loose on top. In the middle of the roof there is a row of attic windows that lets light flow into the gastronomy and the climbing area. The steelframework and the back of the building are covered with aluminium sheets that are perforated to scatter the light, The aluminium also shows a contrast to the rest of the building that is mainly made of concrete.

FACADE The windows are like the form of the building arranged within an orthogonal order, To the front the openings change their shape to holes that look like caves and link the spaces outside with the interior of the building. The facade is almost completely covered with textile reinforced concrete elements. At the openings the facade changes to wood.

STAIRS The stairs in the center of the hotel area connect the splitlevels as thin and delicately shaped pieces of conrete that transport indirect artificial illumination under each stair in order to lead light into the center of the building. The rail is made of glass and held by small steel fixtures quite invisibly attached to the reinforced concrete elements of the stairs.

thomas michael_CLIMBING CENTER

DETAILDRAWINGS The larger openings are built as a curtainwall. Aluminium was used as material for the mullions.

STEEL FRAMEWORK The steel framework was developed in 3d in order to follow the angles of the triangulated surface. It forms the connection between the reinforced concrete pillars and the layered prefabricated elements consisting of the concretecover, the insulation and wood in the back.

DOOR The detail on the left shows the connection between the door and the other parts of the facade. Accessable for wheelchair user and properly insulated.

013_ _014

[1] BEARING CONSTRUCTION The construction is formed by pillars of reinforced concrete with a grid of 8m distance. They lead the weight into the ground and hold the steelconstruction for the climbingwalls. As constructional framework for the climbingwalls it was necessary to use trusses in order to allow the technical system of aircondition to permeate the space.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT The ate the top

light that is used under the roof to seperit from the walls also seems to appear in hotelrooms as indirect artificial lights on of the windows.

SUN PROTECTION To protect of the sun in case of a summerday movable aluminium elements provide shadow and enable to close the room.

REDENSIFICATION IN A HISTORIC CONTEXT FRAMING THE CITY PROF. FLORIAN FISCHER & ROLAND BACHMAN

STUDENT DORMITORY IN NUREMBERGS HEART The intention was to spread a chain of cubes into the plot that enables new public and private spaces and also evokes a link between the differend surrounding buildingtypes. The open order of the boxes creates communicative areas with views on the wall, the university and the dwellings in the west to respect the cultural importance of the old heritage

URBAN CONTEXT The site is located in the old town of Nuremberg in the northern part called St. Sebald and includes different typologies like university buildings, museum and residentials as well as the ancient citywall.

MAXTORMAUER In the back of the plot the Maxtormauer also known as black “H embraces the environment. The first parts can be retraced to the 11th century with the arcs that ornament the massive wall which was built of regional sandstone. The historical classification of the building is clearly the romaticism. Additional to its own historical defensive effect it also has a moat surrounding it and includes several towers. The last wallpart was finished in 1400.

WISO NUREMBERG The building in the south of the plot is a part the university in nuremberg part of the social faculty. It was built in the 1970s and renewed as well as enlarged in 2004. In former times the plot was in use by a brewery. The complex got a lot of situations that remind of machines with parts of the building that seem to move forward. Parts of the building are covered with red bricks. A big part also has a very open facade. The northside also consists partly of concrete.

019_ _020

[2] ACCESS TO THE DORMITORIES The building has its entrances sheltered by the upper cubes and is disability-friendly. The whole student residential is connected into one entity. The access of the buildig is enabled with stairs and slopes. The stairs are also formed with included seating areas. As the groundfloor is elevated so that it creates privacy to the streetlevel.

TIME FRAME By stacking the different functions as boxes on top of each other to a space defining row different qualities could be generated. The terraces on top of the groundcubes provide a public space for all the inhabitants. The sheltered places below the upper cubes allow the interaction between public and private areas. Due to the transparency of the building experiencing the qualities of the environment becomes a clear goal. The multifunctional eventroom initiates the composition and creates a wide view over the slope that is adjacent to the plot and enables the beautiful perspective over the city of Nuremberg.

SUPREME COURT IN LOS ANGELES DAVID RUY & GARET AMMERMAN

CAMELEON CASINO COURT In the heart of the downtown area in Los Angeles with its axial organization cutting through and framing the plot I developed a new character that does not hick up as architecture often tries to just like the wald disney concert hall only two blocks away. Instead the element was borrowed from another typology: the casino. It was introduced in order to give the building something that courtbuildings usually don’t have. The mainidea was to give it public space and rethink the procedure and the path of the different people who are involved.

[3]

CASINO CARPET LIGHT Including the conversation of the typologically oposed characteristics the building provides unusual qualities. Entering a casino one dives into an own microcosm. Confronted with the unusal deep space the intricate carpetpattern superimposes the whole floor and changes in the different areas appearing and disappearing in order to lead the visitor between the different areas until he takes place on his seat. The light frames the important areas and plays with the contrast of artificial and natural light from the exterior courtrooms.

thomas michael_SUPREME COURT L.A.

ROOFGARDEN On the roof of the court there is a welcoming garden that extends the idea of the intricate pattern to the exterior and completes the five modernist points for good architecture. The roofgarden provides the opportunity to sit outside and take a break or work on a laptop.

ELEVATED OFFICE TOWER

ORNAMENTATION was used intensely to guide and catch the visitor and create a seperate world that invites and provides space for everybody.

031_ _032

[3] EAT SLEEP WORK REPEAT For those who come from far away the building provides a hotel tower which you can see on the left of the picture. It enables the people to stay within the complex as long as they wish.

LAYERING After entering the foyer that is organized just like it would be in a casino namely as a distribution area the persons are led through a glassforest built by the courtrooms that carefully touch the ground where the elevators become piloti. Decapitating the people and hiding their faces. During the process the glassbox closes vertically and leaves the space visually open but physically closed. In this area of the courtroom the accused is still embedded in the real world and there is no hierarchy in the seats besides the position and lectern in front. In the upper area of the courtroom the more severe cases are considered. The judge and the accused can enter both rooms directly from the basement by using the elevator.

PATTERNS Dominating the composition is the main part of the building the court. It is organized in the open space of the two horizontal spread storeys and involves the idea of continuous interlocking patterns.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXT In the heart of France the city of Paris with its axial organization cut by the curved Seine but also in the city of the architectural experiment with the eiffeltower and the centre pompidou our design is embedded in a contrasty and challenging area. As an addition to the existing Library St. Genevieve on the left of the picture and situated next to the university and a townhouse in its back as well as the pantheon the new design finds itself in a ancient environment with ornamented pierced limestonefacades and a far reaching cultural background.

RENE MAGRITTE The artist for whom this design is dedicated is Rene Magritte, a belgian Surrealist. His art tries to emphasize the vision on the viewers environment and to provoke to break through thought barriers. Often they make the usual look and feel unusal through visual manipulation of physical order like gravity or overlaying phantasy worlds with the reality. To frame and strengthen these works in order to follow the intention of the artist is the goal of this project. With its reduced and cutting through concept the building works against gravity and creates a composition of exclusion and reflection

which is the main part of the building is generated by three large continuous rooms that are inspired by the contemplation on a journey, a path for wandering was created. The first room is segmented into a long shaped staircase. The exhibition is spread over the different steps and leads the visitor up until the middle of a large high area that makes it possible to have an overview over the second room just like on a balcony. From here the visitor also has the only transparent window as external slope extends the impression of being elevated to the exterior. In the following room is an exhibition of

sculptures and under the first room there is a screen displaying the information about his life and works. The third room is formed by three smaller areas again following the idea of the longspread stairs. Here the visitor can sit for a while and contemplate enjoying the art. The room in the middle connects the storage to all the areas and negates with its shape the perspective in the exhibitionareas. Besides the museum the composition also includes a cafe in the westpart of the building and a gallery for a young artist on the top level as well as all the necessary facilities for the building.

[5] DWELLINGS IN FEUCHTWANGEN OLD CITY AGELESS LIVING HUBERT KRESS & NADJA LETZEL

OLD CITY NEW LIVING The plot is situated in the historic center of a small town called feuchtwangen in bavaria. Its edge to the north is defined by the town wall which is followed by a small beautiful park. It is adjacent to a parking deck at the north east which should be considered in the design due to its poor appearance. In the south west the border is formed by a path that is laying one meter lower than the plot. The south is formed by already existing dwellings and a small public space. One building in the middle was already very deteriorated. It is also obvious that in former times there was a path through those buildings. As a conclusion the building was rebuild in a more appropriate way and redensify it with additional dwellings.

CONCEPT The intention is to open the two spaces on the plot to each other. Three new dwellings on the free space will transform the odd area into a lively zone that is attractive for families aside the town wall of feuchtwangen. Each of the dwellings is arranged with an own garden and entrance to the semi public space in the middle. A workshop building is included for business and cultural uses that also provides coverage for the unsightly parkingarea. The internal composition is introduced by an open studio in the groundfloor which also could be used for exposure of art or as a small shop. Looking into the rebuild volume the first floor is formed by the open living, cooking and dining room, a toilet in the north and an optional working or bedroom. In the second floor there is the generous bedroom for the parents and a second bedroom for the children as well as a bathroom. The storeys are linked by an open vertical space aside the concrete stairs with its wood handrail.

053_ _054

[5]

thomas michael_DWELLINGS RURAL

CONCLUSION The result is a family-friendly arrangement to provide space for the incoming new young citizens and revive the disused area in feuchtwangen according to the cultural and urban environment.

[10]

CONSTRUCTION The precedents I chose for this assignment are bridges. As a piece of infrastructure the bridge is mostly in the hand of engineers. During my studies I realized the great potential of bridges as a building that can exceed the reduction to its physical connecting function. For example the muhr isle in gray that inhabits an eventarea and light installations or a containerbridge in Israel that provides interesting space in big heights. By introducing more formal aspects and varying the shape the bridge can not only be recognized with its cultural value but also allow broader interaction. Therefore spatial and structural composition was created in the following that exceeds the boundaries of a usual bridge.

CONSTRUCTION The horizontal trusses are formed by bended steel beams following the curvature of the building. Regarding the horizontal lines it can be seen that they are many and thin in order to enable horizontal spread openings. These entities intersect with the round framework. The construction is connected to the ground on both ends and also centered to ensure stability throughout the whole length. In addition the facade and the interior cladding strengthen the construction as supporting shells.

VIEW OVER THE ROOF Accompanied by blue tin roofs of Paris and red tiles it sits in its environment as a clear solitary but meaningful embedded with its texturation that was created from abstracted pictures of the environment. CONNECTIONS Elevated from the ground the new mass creates a dense interlace from cityspace to the building, visually accompanied by the cantilever that looses its shellby crossing the boundaries of the plot and generates a interface to the public.

FONT VIEW Aside of the repetitive theme of the scaled square the frontview blurs the boundaries of geometry and texture in order to create ambiguity between the holes, columns and the black streams.

BACK SIDE The backside of the design encases the staircase and the elevatorcore in a forest of columns that vary in size, diameter and organizaton.

079_ _080

[12] COLUMN ARCH MACHINE The upper part that visually leads into the cantilever is dominated by a delicate order of small extruded elements. Those follow the perforations in the front and the interior grid of the building and create the impression of a gradient cutting through the whole building,

VOLUME Besides its base the volume consists of three mainparts. The cloudshaped part in the left the perforated element that embraces and binds together the whole building visually and finally the glass cantilever breaking through the shell and exposing the inner grid that is developed from the perforation of the facade.

LAYERING The interior circulation is cased by different layers from the transparent glassfacade to the loovers and the perforated curved shell and the shellpart that leads like a liquid into the ground. Those layers break the light and open or enclose the building parts following its interior.
