On the eighteenth of september two thousand and fourteen, I would embark on a trip that would change that would change my life. A trip to New York city, has been on my agenda for many year’s, and this has been made possible by the extreme generousity of my Grandfather and Grandmother. This photo journal serves as a true reminder to what a life changing and awe inspiring trip that I took during the five days I was out of the country and in America for the first time.

day one Agenda:

After landing safely at Newark Liberty International , we caught a yellow cab into Manhattan, to our hotel. The Belvedere Hotel, 48th st 8th Av. We checked in with the hotel concierge service and left our bags to go out and explore, seeing as it was only around 13:00 pm, which (after an eight hour flight from Heathrow) felt a little odd. We decided that we would go to the USS Intrepid on our arrival, and that we did. We headed down to the pier on W 46th 12th Av and boarded the fantastic looking war ship, that was much bigger than i had anticipated. Alex was in his element. After taking in what was a unique experience, being on a famous war ship, we headed back to the hotel, take our bags to the room and unpack. Our evening consisted of a walk to Times Sq. to look at the shopping and the lighting, which was very cool to see, as it was stereotypical NYC. After a beautiful Italian meal, the jet lag started to hit us all.

day two Agenda:

My first morning waking in NYC. I hadn’t slept well all night due to over tiredness, but I managed to catch a quite photo of the super early sunrise, but I didnt manage to catch the time, as I went straight back to bed. Day two in New York would see us going on our pre booked bus tour of the city, this was a great addition to the trip as we got an insight into what it would be like living in the city as a local, and also we got to see all of the famous landmarks and buildings. Tyler our tour guide was litterally the most enthusiastic person in the city that day, with the biggest set of teeth too! We visited everywhere possible in a 5 hours trip, and it was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the trip over to Staten Island on the ferry, seeing the Statue of Liberty, and having a hot dog. The World trade centre site was also noted as one of the most moving, harrowing, yet remarkably pieceful places i have ever been to. The whole day trip really gave us all a true insight into the city of New York, and it really enriched the trip. The even ing proceeded with irish bars, and a slice of pizza bigger than my face.

day three Agenda:

By this point, our knowledge and confidence of navigating the city was growing well, to the point where we felt comfortable to go to places, as a group and as individuals. Alex and I decided to head down to a small coffee spot that we spotted on the first day, that sold Stumptown Coffee, this got me very excited. We rose early and headed down to The jolly goat just before 8:15am. On arrival we recieved a very warm welcome from the barista, and we had coffee, bought coffee and indulged in thier famous cold brew. Today would be the day we would go to the Rockefella Center to enjoy the views of the city from the observation deck. The views were outstanding. The fact that we were so high up above the streets below felt magical. The best decision we made was to travel to the top of the Rockefella instead of the Empire state, because it meant we got to see the Empire state building in our view. Later we would take the subway for the first time which was an experience i was looking forward to as i would be able to see the iconic use of Helvetica used on thier trasport system and the iconic look of the trains.

day four Agenda:

Today woud be the penultimate day of our trip to NYC, and we wanted to make sure that we made the most of our time. Seeing as it was a sunday we were unsure what was going to be taking place, what was open/closed etc. Turned out that during the tour, we were brieft that a protest march was going to be taking place in Midtown, starting from central park and heading down towards battery park. We decided that we were going to go and visit the American Museum of Natural History, the exact museum that was used for the film, ‘Night at the museum’. The walk to the museum was no easy feat! we encountered the protest march, and stumbled upon a market that was on a whole avenue that had been closed to traffic. The museum itself was fantastic to see, a true addition to the trip. We made our way back to midtown, back through the market and protests, had a corn on the cob! Later we ventured to ACE hotel on Broadway, and later onto Little Italy and china town. After a quick bar stop, we amazingly stumbed upon Layfayette street and Supreme NYC.

day five Agenda:

Our last day in the big city. A sombre day in our trip as none of us really wanted to leave and the prospect of the amount of time the traveling back would take, was not too apealing either. We were going to make our way to the 911 Memorial museum today, but because we would have to leave our hotel at 3pm to head back to Newark, we decided to just stay local. Our day consisted of taking a walk around the south-west corner of central park over towards the batting cages, where we found a small coffee shop and we took the time to reflect on our trip. The ride back to Newark was the hardest part of the day, as we left the Lincoln tunnel we could see the manhattan skyline and wished we could still be enjoying it. Until next time.

new york new york A special Thank you to Martin, my Grandfather, and Bridget, my Grandmother. Without these two individuals, this life changing trip would not have been able to have taken place. This documentation is dedicated to them as a means of thanks. Thomas Hobbs.
