CALLUM MATTHEWS INTERVIEW
Having fought his way back from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, last weekend’s man of the match performance showed Callum Matthews is nearing his best once again... “TO BE TOLD I SHOULDN’T PLAY AGAIN WAS REALLY HARD... I’M HAPPY TO HAVE PROVED THAT DOCTOR WRONG” What have you made of our start to the season? I thought we had a really good pre-season & I was hoping we would carry that on into the first game of

A brace from Perry Burns, along with strikes from Dale Sands & Mark Baptist ensured James Paviour’s side progressed against Division One opposition at the Len Forge Centre. After winning Division Three in Paviour’s first season in charge, the Hoops had made a 100% start to the season & raced into a three goal lead in the opening 45.
Baptist poked home on the line to regain the visitors’ advantage. Former Catholic forward Nathan Dewberry did manage to get on the scoresheet before the end with there also being enough time for skipper Marcus Turner to be dismissed for a rash challenge on midfielder Alex Disch. ast week, captain Dan Boosey celebrated his 100th game for the club with a clean sheet as
the Reserves maintained their undefeated start to the season. Having joined Catholic United at the age of six, Boosey worked his way through the youth teams with brief spells away at Southend United & Concord Rangers - before making his first appearance at mens level in August 2014. That afternoon the Reserves - featuring current manager Tom Harding - beat Springfield Res. 6-2 & it was during this season the goal-

gest game to date.
More than five years later, Boosey is now an experienced member of the squad, as demonstrated by the decision to give him the armband & has also started in fine form- a crucial penalty save helped secure a 3-2 opening day victory away against Wakering Sports Res.
The Hoops overcame the odds away from home to beat Brightlingsea Regent Res. 4-3(AET) in the Essex Premier Cup semi final, & it is this game that Boosey recalls his most memorable. “It was a big step up for me in terms of pressure especially with it being a massive day for the club,” said the 24 year-old. “It wasn’t necessarily my most favourite game or best performance but was valuable experience
Speaking about the opening three matches, Boosey said: “It’s been a strong start for us from day one of pre-season & we’ve carried that momentum into the first few games of the season. It’s still very early days & we can’t get ahead of ourselves; now it’s important for us to get a consistent team out every week & the results should then take care of themselves.” The former St. Thomas More pupil added; “It’s so important for us to get out of this league, I think we now have

a great blend of youth & experience in the team & you’d think by looking at our team on paper we should be in the higher divisions. Now is the time for us to put the hard work in & show why we deserve to be promoted this year.”
