CENTER FOR RIVER CULTURE FOR CHICAGO River Outpost

:The start to realizing the Chicago River’s true potential

River culture means people interacting around the river and with the river. It means people caring for and having an interest in the river. By studying river culture in different cities around the world, I realized that people define what river culture means in their city, but in general, if more people were brought near the river, a city’s river culture would improve and become more diverse. This is where architecture and infrastructure come into place. If the infrastructure leads you to and around the river, such as the bike paths in Amsterdam, or if the buildings are placed keeping the relationship to the river in mind or are placed to engage with the river, such as some in Berlin, then people are naturally “forced” to interact with the river. Therefore, a center for river culture was created that would bring people over the river, keeping the river walk free at the same time, while having a floating component that would bring people down to the river. A large interactive plaza was created to invite people to actually spend time near the river and help them understand how special the Chicago River actually is. By subdividing it into active and calm, the educational spaces are kept quiet, important spaces because a public that is educated about the river means a public that cares for the river. Opening up towards Michigan Avenue, the building invites the many pedestrians that walk there into its welcoming embrace.

Design Development Geometric Inspiration The frame of the table was derived from three regular hexagonal shapes. The design ended up being too long and out of scale.

Human Scale To adjust the frame to the proportions of the human body, the central part of the frame was made steeper and narrower. This also solved the issue of length.

Structure The two structural elements on either side of the central framework were shifted upward to give the frame more stability and strength. At the same time, this change enhanced the aesthetics of the table. Perspective View - Rendered Sketch-Up Model
