THE CITY IN FLUX Francessca Lang, Jon Lawrence, Thomas Leahy & Jessica Lee
FRANCESSCA LANG DEVELOPMENT Fran decided to experiment with three initial ideas, the first one being a 3D model, which would be made up of three layers and would be freestanding, using the Dada feel or collage and typography. The second idea was to focus of urban typography that was found and inspired typography from the city. The final idea was strongly influenced from DKNG’s pieces of work to create a set of four posters showing Sheffield now and then
with illustrations and contrasting colours. She then went onto creating a mock up of all three ideas, to get a rough idea of what would work best, and then went onto deciding that she wanted to use the third idea of creating four posters. Fran started drawing out her illustrations from photos that she had taken before and then refined them on software, and then went onto editing them.
FINAL OUTCOME Once Fran was happy with the colours, type font, sizing and everything looked up to standard on screen, she then went onto printing them and photographing them in a suitable environment. all four of the posters are different themes but fit together with the colours and style of the posters. By using both hand
drawn illustration she was able to get a more natural and unique outcome rather than just using a straight up photo.
THOMAS LEAHY DEVELOPMENT Tom started by experimenting with both photography and street art, and started to experiment on software to get a crisp mock up of his designs, always going back to his research to look get influence from. He then started to experiment with different fonts for his logo, colours and layering up with different textures and shapes. Tom went onto developing his pieces of work and
combining them all together to create a booklet, with this he had to design a book cover that fitted with his pieces and make sure it all ran through smoothly with contrasts and visually pleasing pages. After this Tom placed his pages together on InDesign so that it could be printed out later on.
FINAL OUTCOME After Tom was happy with his pages, and pieces of art, the type he printed it out for the final outcome to be A5, the booklet would be connected together with staples like most booklets. The booklet was then placed onto the Internet as well as being printed so anyone that wanted to would be able to access it easily.
JESSICA LEE DEVELOPMENT After Jessica was happy with her research she then went onto experimenting. One of the first things she looked into was quilling, a really unique craft which when finished, can created a visually stunning pattern or text. She then went onto looking at placing the questionnaire and photography together, again using a handmade approach. Another idea was to create a map which fitted around
the Northern Quarter. With this ideas Jess then went onto looking at different materials that she could experiment with through her work, including felt, watercolour and mark making. She then went onto experimenting with these to see the outcome. Combining all of this, she then went onto experimenting with all of her ideas together, to see which would be the strongest outcome.
FINAL OUTCOME Jessica decided to look into using her idea of the map and mix this with the typography that she had been experimenting with which would conclude to a leaflet. She went onto making this, starting with a handmade feel, and using software at a later date to refine anything and clean anything up, Jessica created her final outcome
with embossed paper. Using both drawing and software she was able to keep the watercolour and softer colours with texture, but by printing out the final outcome it was able to keep it fresh without smudging or wearing.
JON LAWRENCE DEVELOPMENT
To start with Jon started to look at recycled typography, which was influenced from Hautamaki, then went onto putting everything he had gathered and created collages which were then scanned so he could edit even more with different textures and colours, by scanning them into the computer he was able to collate more than one experiment together. with this in mind he could then go onto creat-
ing ideas with his own photography and ideas, with working on the photography by experimenting with layering and colours the refinement could be split into two different parts and then put together at the last given moment. Jon then decided to add his own text into this using the phrase “Less Acid, More House. which prompted him to create a mock up of four different posters.
FINAL OUTCOME
Once the type and colours were at a standard that Jon was happy with, he then added his photography and layered them to fit all together to create a set of four posters. Once he was happy with the final outcome on screen, he was then able to get his final outcomes printed out on A1 and then go back to Manchester and get some really nice photos of his work in the environment they would be placed.
