THOMAS MARTINIELLO DESIGN STUDIO GAMMA SEMESTER TWO, 2018 STUDIO 04 - JOEL BENICHOU 843 955

Looking back on the semester, this design studio has helped me realise my passion for diagramming, as well as inspired me to look at the interaction of the user within different thresholds of spaces. I was also able to improve my representational drawing skills, looking deeper into the layout of floor plans, sections and cabinetry detailing. Aspects of my design skill set which I have developed throughout the semester and wish to further explore in future are; • Inbuilt cabinetry and looking at how this can provide and add to the functionality of a space. This portfolio comprises the two major projects undertaken in Design Studio Gamma, apart of my second year undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne.

• Looking at extending and integrating the internal living areas with private open spaces.

I am currently studying Architecture in the Bachelor of Design alongside following my passion for languages through Japanese.

• Looking at how a house or development interacts with its context in a physical manner - how can we provide urban infrastructure and blur boundaries between private and public? What do these spaces look like?

On the side I also enjoy playing music, namely jazz, with the trumpet being my instrument of choice. I am also an avid gardener, both indoors and out. Architecture impacts peoples lives in so many ways and I am here to discover how I can better improve the daily life of an individual through design. More of my design work can be found on my digital portfolio: tmartiniello.wixsite.com/portfolio

ME

• Looking at providing flexible spaces for varying uses and thinking about how the space can be defined during different zoned accordingly. A key development I made this semester was looking deeply into case studies. Specifically, going on site visits to study the surrounding building typologies and design motifs had a heavy influence on my designs. From these visits I was able to analyse key design decisions made in other projects in response to the given context.

REFLECTION

DESIGN PROJECT ONE: LIVING HOUSE The first project for the semester looked at transforming, extending and adapting. Given the context of Carlton and the site of 4 MacArthur Place North, we were encouraged to explore the theme of urban densificaion alongside looking at how the house would adapt over a 30 year period alongside its occupants. Analysis of Melbourne’s inner north suburbs (namely Brunswick, Fitzroy and Carlton), helped shape and influence how we approached the design, ensuring our concepts met council regulation and maintained harmony within the street scape and wider context.

11 Taking on board feedback from the presentation of this assignment, I have since made the following developments; • altered and further developed my adaption plans taking on board feedback about moving services being too drastic • zoning highlighted on floor plan to better indicate how the spacial segregation was approached • internal ceiling angles in living area altered based on sun angles which would cast desired reflections and shadows • roof from existing building opened up to utilise space + skylights added • minor adjustments of lines and hatch work on plans for better representation

Spatial transitions and circulation were key focus areas of my design. Within this I looked at using stairs and level changes to create separate spaces within one larger overall space. This was done as the site is long and narrow so maintaining the sense of openness and space was key. Adding to the open and spacious feeling, light wells and shadows were used to make the space feel larger. The living room ceiling was key in playing with light and shadow as well as opening up to the rear of the site to allow northern solar gain.

DESIGN PROJECT TWO: LIVING NEIGHBORHOOD (PART ONE - GROUP) The second project for the semester looked at urban densification on a larger scale. The context was expanded from the first assignment to include surrounding blocks which we were to be redesigned to accommodate for a higher density of living. The first part of the project was working in a small group to develop a scheme for the site, producing a site massing plan and schematic floor plans.

DESIGN PROJECT TWO: LIVING NEIGHBORHOOD (PART TWO - INDIVIDUAL) Continuing on from the first part of this project, we moved onto individual work, each selecting a focus area of our defined site plan. Within our defined focus areas we developed the building forms and plans, focusing on 2 selected systems. For the second part of this design project I chose to focus on the material and civic systems to be the driving forces in my design.

OVERALL SITE

Taking on board feedback from the presentation of this assignment, I have since made the following developments; • graffiti/ street art added to the exposed concrete walls in the open public spaces to pre-empt possible vandalism

37

The other main feedback was to look at lowering the heights of some of the internal buildings, however after looking into this it would not be feasible within my focus area due to the density target set at the beginning of the project. If the whole site was to be re-designed this could be made possible.

• adjusted some line weights on plans and renders for better clarity

Maximising the functionality of spaces by considering how furniture and urban infrastructure could be built in, was an area I chose to focus on for this project. Providing plenty of storage and allowing for desk space in all of the rooms was key in meeting the needs of the target client. External seating created in the depths of walls allowed for a connection between the occupants and the public. This was aided through pivot and servery style sash windows.
