From The Publisher... RISK VS. REWARD Risk vs. Reward? The question that would be entrepreneurs ask themselves when exploring potential enterprises and business opportunities. Like any seasoned gambler, the questions of risk loom large……what are the risk associated with leaving the comforts a bi-weekly paycheck? Is there a market for my product or service? Can I make the venture successful for the long term? The risk vs. reward question grows larger once those businesses are established and the question centers on opportunities for growth. The rewards are immeasurable…….economic stability, job growth, wealth generation, etc. The question of Risk vs. Reward can also be extended to our communities. What are the risk of not supporting minority owned businesses in our communities vs. the rewards for doing such? The answer seems simple to us……. when we fail to reinvest or in some cases invest in businesses in key areas, those businesses failed, jobs were lost or were not created and then became dilapidated or created the wrong type of business activity. When we support the businesses in the publication or minority businesses in general, we do so to the reward of generations to come. We simply must bear this in mind………when we don’t support these businesses and they fail, we have no one else to blame other than ourselves. We realized in 1990, the reward of promoting minority owned firms greatly outweighed any risk associated. Friends, Thank you for supporting the Charleston Black Pages. SFC Mackey joined the United States Army in February 1995, as a Combat Medic. She served in the 2nd Infantry Division in Camp Casey, Korea; XVIII Airborne Corps, 44th Medical Brigade & Womack Army Medical Center,Fort Bragg, NC ; US MEPCOM, Fort Lee, Virginia; 1st Infantry Division in Sweinfurt, Germany, Kuwait & Baghdad, Iraq. SFC Mackey transferred into the Army National Guard in August 2007. In 2008, she relocated from the Georgia Army National Guard to the South Carolina Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Command. She has recruited for two and a half years in Columbia area. SFC Mackey recruits for University of South Carolina’s Army ROTC Department. SFC Mackey currently resides in Columbia,SC & is a proud mother of six wonderful children. Marshawn 23 yrs, Queshawndre 21yrs, My’kaylah 13yrs, Zadie 12yrs, Faith 11yrs and NyAsia Rebekah 9yrs.

Mrs. Miriam C. Green, the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Colleton & the Late Thomas Colleton, Sr., was born in McClellanville, SC. She completed her early education in her community’s school system, and thereafter she received the Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Voorhees College in Denmark, SC. Along with her degree, Miriam became certified in the areas of Energy Auditor, Affordable Housing Management Program, Community Development, and Grant Writer. She is also became a Graduate of the Institute of Government in 2001. Green began her career in the Awendaw District with Berkeley Electric Cooperative where she was just promoted from Vice President of Community Service to District Manager of the Awendaw District. Miriam has been with the company for 37 years. She has been instrumental in the development of Operation Round-Up and as a Coordinator of Housing Department for the Town of Awendaw. She has served for several years as Chairperson of the Charleston County Advisory Board (CDBG). She also manages her own Restaurant/Catering Business,“ Buckshot’s Restaurant and Joe’s Catering Service”. In addition to her personal and professional responsibilities Green is an active member in the Charleston Community she serves as Council person for the Town of Awendaw, Charleston County Grants Administrations Advisory Board, Urban League Board Vice President, board of Trustees for Rural Mission, Charleston County Human Services, South Santee Senior Citizen Board of Director, Black Caucus Advisory Board, Member of Family Selection of the United Methodist Church, Steward Pro-Tem- Mt. In July 2009, Paula Harper Bethea was asked to serve as Interim Director of the South Carolina Education Lottery. In September 2009, she became the second Executive Director in the Lottery’s history. Mrs. Bethea had previously served as one of nine South Carolinians chosen to establish the Lottery in 2001. Prior to joining the lottery, Bethea was Director of External Affairs for the McNair Law Firm. Active in numerous local, state and national organizations, she chairs The Caring Coins Foundation on Hilton Head Island, is chairman of the board of First Financial Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiary, First Federal of Charleston, and serves on the board of the MCI Heritage Classic Foundation. In 2006, Paula and her husband, William L. Bethea, Jr., were named South Carolina’s Business Leaders of the Year. She is Chair Emeritus of the Unite Way of America Board of Governors. A native of Hampton County, South Carolina, Bethea graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina. She and her husband reside in Columbia and Bluffton, South Carolina.

In the Lowcountry, Teresa Williams takes serving her community very seriously. Teresa is a community educator at Select Health. Since joining the team in 2002, her role has been to help others learn about the First Choice health plan and the services it provides by organizing and participating in health events in communities with the greatest need. “I enjoy working for Select Health, a company that is truly concerned for its members and strives to provide them with access to high quality health care,” said Teresa. “The fact that we have a presence in the community is equally important. We are the faces of First Choice. Our members know who we are, and they know where to find us.” Although Teresa lives in St. Matthews, S.C., her job takes her all over the Lowcountry. A typical day includes visiting with First Choice members at doctor or Medicaid offices as well as working at community events. Teresa interacts with First Choice members and others where they live. She enjoys answering questions about the First Choice health plan and encouraging people to make healthier lifestyle choices. “At Select Health, providing people with access to quality health care and an improved quality of life is our highest priority. I enjoy hearing First Choice members say how wonderful our plan’s benefits and services are. I know we’re making a difference and that’s rewarding to me,” added Teresa. Teresa was born in Longs, S.C., in Horry County. She graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School and Benedict College, in Columbia. Teresa is actively involved in her church and charity organizations in the Orangeburg area.

The facility is 40,000 ft2 in size and houses a high school regulation sized gymnasium, an indoor track, a commercial kitchen, conference rooms, classrooms, theatrical stage, fitness center and locker rooms. Use of the facility is open to the public via rental, pass or membership to the Family Life Center. It has hosted graduations, wedding receptions, galas, banquets and concerts. Gospel legends, stars and rising stars such as Shirley Caesar, Rance Allen, Deitrick Haddon and Sunday’s Best first male winner – Joshua Rodgers have graced our stage.

Just one example: Our Food Pantry Ministry - provides food and other services to the community on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Over 50 families (upwards of 275 individuals) provided meals each week with over 500 pounds of food provided. The 10 or so volunteers, led by Sister A. Davis, believe in what they are doing and 'praise the Lord' each day for being able to do it.

Regina Lewis University of South Carolina here was never a question as to whether Regina Lewis would go to college. It just happened sooner than anyone might have expected. Lewis entered first grade at age four and in 1980 was a University of South Carolina freshman at age 15.

“The agreement was that I would live at home, so Mom dropped me off at campus and picked me up every day for the first year,” Lewis said. With a bachelor’s degree in psychology at age 19, Lewis continued her studies at the University of Maryland law school in Baltimore. After graduation she landed a job at a large law firm. “And I did not enjoy it; it was not for me,” she said. A year later, she found her joy — and took nearly a 50 percent pay cut — when she went to work at the House of Ruth, a nonprofit group that assists victims of domestic violence. Lewis later returned to South Carolina and made partner at a prominent firm, then opened an all-female firm, Gaffney Lewis & Edwards LLC, in Columbia, focusing on corporate defense. The practice is strong, and Lewis looks back with satisfaction on the different pathways she chose in her legal career.

The MBE office is responsible for administering and implementing the City’s plan for the utilization of minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBE). He is responsible for assisting businesses to become certified and also with compiling, updating and distributing a directory of available MWBEs for use by city personnel in achieving the goals of the plan. The MBE office is also tasked with assisting potential entrepreneurs to identify and evaluate resources related to the start-up of their business, and aids existing small business owners in the capacity of business growth and expansion.

Theron is a native of Charleston, South Carolina and received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Tuskegee University and earned a Master of Arts degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University. After completing undergraduate coursework he began a fifteen year career in radio broadcasting. During his broadcasting experience, he served as newscaster, on-air personality, program director, operations manager, and general manager. Theron joined Cummins Engine Co., Inc. in 1991. During his tenure with Cummins he worked as a human resources professional and operations supervisor. He also served as team leader for the plant’s Community Involvement Committee during which time the Charleston plant achieved the Functional Level 4 designation which is the highest awarded by the Cummins Foundation. Theron’s career with the City of Charleston began in 2003 serving as Project Manager for the Mayor’s Office of Children, Youth & Families. He has also worked as a supervisor in the Public Service department, and has served as MBE Manager since April 2006. Theron’s volunteer and civic experiences include serving on the Board of Directors of the Charleston Trident Urban League, the Education Foundation of the Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Charleston Education Network and the Carolina Art Association. He served two terms as board President for Wings for Kids, called the best after school program in the country by the leader of the National Association for After School Programs, and prior to his employment with the City of Charleston, he chaired the Mayor’s Commission for Children for three years. He also serves as a Trustee of Central Baptist Church in downtown Charleston.

Pastor Nancy M. Faden Solid Rock Christian Fellowship astor Nancy M. Faden is the daughter of the late Joseph McBride and the late Elizabeth Brown McBride Hollins and step-daughter of the late Robert Hollins, Sr. She is native of Washington, DC; moving to South Carolina from Akron, Ohio. She is a graduate of McCrorey-Liston High; attended and graduated from Lisle, Clemson and Southern Wesleyan Universities with a CAD Electrical Design certificate and degrees in Business Administration. She also has a degree from American Bible College and Seminary and is continuing study for her degree in Pastoral Counseling.

Elder Faden accepted the call to ministry in 1996 and served on the ministerial staff of Praise and Deliverance Temple Ministries, Intl. in Jenkinsville, South Carolina. She worked with the youth, seniors and outreach ministries which resulted in phenomenal growth of these ministries. Moving to Charleston in 1999, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church and served on the ministerial team and continued her work with youth, seniors and outreach. God spoke to Elder Faden in 2001 and she founded Solid Rock Christian Fellowship, a multi-cultural, non-denominational, Word based church. She serves as Senior Pastor. A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Mr. Weston spent his days as a youth participating on the basketball courts, which he contributes to teaching him valuable lessons about teamwork and focusing on your strengths. Those lessons he incorporates in his professional life.

He loves spending time with his wife of 11 years and six children. His hobbies are reading, laughing, helping others discover their strengths, and coaching basketball. Profile of Achievement TONIA AIKEN TAYLOR 10 Things You Should Know . I ELECTION On November 2009 at approximately 7:30 pm, the final vote count came in. Dr. Tonia Aiken Taylor, becomes the first African American woman to serve on city council for the Town of Moncks Corner. She was sworn in on January 5, 2010. “My platform always includes an unwavering focus on jobs, quality education for all children, health care, and full attention to veterans and seniors. Carefully crafting legislation that is fair and effective for the day to day run of our beautiful city.

“I believe my strength is serving people through problem solving. It’s turning challenges into opportunities. Serving my city makes me feel like I am catering to a large multi-racial congregation of men, women, boys, girls. I serve with unconditional love and care only

I. EXCELLENCE Dr. Taylor graduated from Charleston Southern University in 1986. She was the first African American woman selected to receive the Myrtle E. Hamerick Award for the student “expressing the highest virtues of womanhood”. She received her degree in graduate studies from Jacksonville Theological Seminary and Truth Bible University.

V. BLESSED She is the mother of three beautiful daughters, Destiny Joy, Dynasty Sophia and Divinity Victoria Taylor. She homeschooled her children for ten years, later they attended private and public schools. “As a young woman living in Jacksonville, Florida, I have always desired to have a strong hand in my children’s education. This was not political motivation, but to me holy inspiration. My girls know who they are. They are strong women, determined to be effective at whatever they put their hands to. I am honored to say, they rise up and call me blessed according to Proverbs 31.” VI. RESILIENT Dr. Taylor ran in the 2011 special election and the 2012 general election for the SC House of Representatives for district 100 building political awareness, reminding constituents of voting rights, and a no excuse call to action during election seasons. “I never allow taking the seat to be my only goal during my campaign seasons, because I find that there are too many other accomplishments made during any election. It is also the catalyst that fuels me to run again.” VII. EXPERIENCE She is graduate of the Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government since February 2011. Training continues with special programs Charleston Trident Edition

III. PROMOTION The first student and adjunct professor of her alma mater, Truth Bible University, she is the first to become selected the university’s President. The university will provide online classes. Registration begins in May. “We offer degrees from the Associate to Doctorate level. On site weekend institutes will be made available throughout the school year with an array of topics to include church people and government, separation of church and state, and how to run for a political office in character. Subjects like these are often left out of a Bible School curriculum, but my goal is to remain relevant for the times we live in along with the rich heritage of religious teachings that is constantly available through the depth of God’s Word.”

IV. DEDICATION. Married on March 7, 1992, Dr. Taylor is the wife of Dr. Jerome A. Taylor for the past 22 years. Together they have founded and led Heart to Heart International Ministries for the past 14 years and have impacted many, many lives. On April 29, 2004, they purchased the former Piggly Wiggly Grocery Complex that sits on over 2 acres of land located in the heart of downtown Moncks Corner. They are gearing up for grand opening celebrations on the newly 23,000 sq. ft. renovated facility. They can be seen on Homestar Cable Channel 6 every Monday night from 8-9 pm. Stanley N Weldon is a native of Ridgeville, SC and currently resides in Summerville, SC. He attended Claflin University Orangeburg, SC Majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Education. Stanley is employed at Showa Denko Carbon Inc. where he is the Senior Technician of the Chemical and Physical Laboratories. Weldon has been a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. since 1983. Alpha Phi Alpha develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. Weldon currently serves as President of XI Phi Lambda chapter located in Summerville, SC. The chapter was established in the Berkeley County area on March 10, 1984. Xi Phi Lambda chapter is active with all our National Fraternity Programs such as Project Alpha, Vote-Less People and March of Dimes. Xi Phi Lambda chapter has been a source of leadership throughout the community and continues to advocate to the youth, promote Men Health and political awareness and involvement through our leadership and service to all mankind.

Established on March 13th of 1939, Beta Kappa Lambda is the second oldest Graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, in South Carolina. Its charter members were highly educated and respected within the community, an enduring characteristic, as evident by the CEO’s, doctors, lawyers, judges, financial professionals, law enforcement officers, preachers and educators included in its current membership. Continuing this rich legacy, Brother James G. Brown III, the incumbent president of the Beta Kappa Lambda chapter, is a graduate of the College of Charleston, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and currently runs his own business as a Financial Advisor and independent contractor with First Command Financial Services. Through a values-centered approach to financial planning and a clientfirst philosophy, James is committed to helping his clients better leverage their resources today in order to plan confidently for their tomorrow. The son of a preacher, James understands the importance giving and following sound advice and applies that understanding as he leads his fraternity in their pursuit to serve mankind and coaches his clients toward productive, lifelong financial habits. James is also a member of Charleston Young Professionals, National Society of Black Engineers, Charleston Trident Urban League Young Professionals and a volunteer youth leader at New Jerusalem Church. He enjoys golfing, traveling and spending time with his wife Chela and dog Honey.

Christopher C. Smith currently serves as the Polemarch of the Charleston (SC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The Fairfax, SC native is a 2003 graduate of Allendale-Fairfax High School. Mr. Smith is a 2007 graduate of Claflin University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. He was initiated into the Gamma Nu chapter in the spring of 2005. After relocating to Charleston in the summer of 2007, Christopher affiliated his membership with the Charleston Alumni Chapter, where he has held the offices of intake chairman, Vice Polemarch, and the office of Polemarch which he’s served from 2011 to the present. Mr. Smith is the youngest alumni chapter Polemarch in the Southeastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi. He is a member of Boaz Lodge #309, Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons. He is a member of the Jackson Branch Missionary Baptist Church, in Brunson, SC. He is employed with the Glisten Corporation of Charleston, SC.

Michael V. Gamble is the Polemarch of the Moncks Corner Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity Incorporated. He has held the position since June 2011. He is a graduate of Claflin University, where he was initiated into the fraternity. He is a Life Member of the fraternity and a Life Member of the South Eastern Province. He is a United States Air Force Retiree, and is currently employed at SCANA Corporation as a Human Resources Professional. He is married to Joyce Gamble (Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated); they have a son Christopher, Daughter in law, Cassandra, two grandchildren, Jordan and Zoey. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated was founded on January 05, 1911, on the campus of the University of Indiana. The Moncks Corner Alumni has served the community since 1982. The chapter is recognized for its community involvement through programs such as Guide Right, which mentors young males in the community with emphasis on becoming productive citizens. The annual Addison B. Sales scholarship Gala, which helps provide funding for medical students The American Red Cross, March of Dimes, annual medical screenings and Habitat for Humanity, is some of the involvements of the chapter. The betterment of our community is one of our mottos.

Reginald K. Brown is a native of Smithfield, Virginia. He attended North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC where he obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. He became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 1990 through Gamma Pi Chapter, Prince George’s County MD and is a Life Member of the Fraternity. He is employed with the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SPAWAR) as a Level III Certified Acquisition Logistician and is a member of Royal Missionary Baptist Church. Reginald is married to the former Deirdre L. Bailey and they have two children. Reginald’s hobbies include volunteering, attending sporting events and traveling.

Ronald D. Walston has served as President of the Beta Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. since 2011. He is a graduate of Voorhees College in Denmark, SC; a retired U. S. Naval Chief Warrant Officer, and currently employed with Berchtold Corporation, Charleston, SC as a Technical Training and Support Engineer. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is an organization that views itself as “a part of” the general community rather than “apart from” the general community. They believe that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence…without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desire for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the “inclusive we” rather than the “exclusive we”. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they hold a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. The chapter continues to grow and expand in positive directions as they sponsor and support community programs such as “Sigma’s who Read”, a cooperation with the Charleston County Public Library System; which provide positive examples to under privileged youth in communities; Social Action programs; Bigger & Better Business Programs, and Education programs which focus on the needs of schools and in the community.

Current President, Karen Stevens-Harrison was initiated into Alpha Chi Chapter at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in 1982 and a Masters in Social Work from the University of South Carolina in 1991. She is employed by the Department of Defense, Joint Base Charleston as the Site Manager/ Family Advocacy Intervention Specialist/ Clinical Supervisor at the Naval Weapons Station. Ms. Harrison has served as the President of Omicron Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. since 2010. A few of her civic and sorority awards include the Ava P. Ledford Child Advocate Award, SC NASW Southern Unit Social Worker of the Year Award, the Dorothy Wilson Excellence in Leadership Award and Omicron Rho Omega’s Sister of the Year Award. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, DC. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest female Greek-lettered organization established by African American college-educated women. The sorority was founded on a legacy of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service to all Mankind. Kimberly Greene is a graduate of Bishop England High School, Columbia College for Women, Columbia, South Carolina and Webster University, St. Louis, Mo (North Charleston Campus) where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Management & Leadership. Ms. Greene has been actively involved in her church and community. Her primary role is now serving as President of Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. 2012 – 2013. On February 14, 1942, Gamma Xi Omega Chapter was chartered by eighteen (18) astute and innovative women in Charleston, South Carolina. Since that time the chapter has initiated and implemented many programs of service to the Charleston Community. Under her leadership members have volunteered in the areas of Education, Health, Poverty, Economic Security, Social Justice and Human Rights and the Arts. These initiatives have benefitted the diverse populations within the Charleston community. As the chapter’s presiding officer Ms. Greene is a board member for the Twenty Pearls Foundation of Charleston, Inc. and is the Co-Chairman for the South Carolina AKA Connection Committee which plans activities to address issues confronting citizens that need to be voiced and implemented in various communities. Wanda J. Brown is currently a Nurse Manager at the Ralph Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center; Wanda is a 1987 graduate of the University of South Carolina and holds a Master of Science Degree from Southern Wesleyan University. Wanda is the daughter of Louise R. Simmons and the late William Simmons Jr. and is parent to her daughter Kaylin. Wanda has served as the President of the North Charleston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated since 2011. The North Charleston Chapter, which began with the vision and selfless determination of eight professional women on May 10, 1984, has devoted itself to meeting the needs of the North Charleston community through service endeavors. The North Charleston Alumnae chapter was chartered on June 5, 1988 and since that time has continued its commitment to implementing Delta Sigma Theta’s Five PointThrust through the various programs such as Habitat for Humanity, the Walk for Water Campaign, an ongoing partnership with the SC Coalition Voter Participation, HIV awareness projects as well as the Delta Academy and GEMS(Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) programs for young girls in the North Charleston area.

Cheryl Phyall Williams, current president of the Charleston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was initiated into Delta Alpha Chapter while an undergraduate at Bethune Cookman College. She later earned a Masters in reading at the College of Charleston and has taught on the elementary, middle and high school levels. Williams is a Diamond Life member of the sorority. As president of Charleston Alumnae, she leads approximately 200 members in the local chapter’s ongoing commitment of promoting community service, providing scholarships, and stimulating participation in the establishment of positive public policy as well as highlighting issues and providing solutions for problems in the communities. The Charleston Alumnae chapter was chartered in 1940 and has a tremendous legacy of service through the years. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 tenacious, young women. This year, 2013, is its Centennial Anniversary. Celebration activities began on January 1, 2013 with the sorority making history as the first African American organization to participate in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. On January 11-13, 2013, over 12,000 Deltas gathered in Washington DC to pay tribute to the 22 Founders and commemorate the last 100 years of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. Additional activities planned for the year include a reenactment of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. , the first public event of the Founders. Local chapters all over have planned community events to commemorate the Centennial Anniversary.

Summerville Alumnae Chapter Pamela Goodwine-Glover, President

Darlene Lavette Broughton is serving as the President of the Berkeley County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for the term of 2012-2014. She was initiated into the organization April of 1997 through the Omicron Phi Chapter at Clemson University. Darlene received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson in December of 1998 and a M.B.A. from Webster University in 2002. She is currently employed as an Assistant Resident Construction Engineer with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Darlene is a native of St. Stephen, SC and is the oldest daughter of retired Berkeley County educators, John and Roberta Broughton. Darlene’s brother, Derwin, is an licensed architect in Dallas, TX and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Her sister, Dana, holds a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry and is currently a law student at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The three siblings are alumnae of Clemson University. Roberta, Darlene and Dana are all active members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University. The Berkeley County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on May 22, 1976 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Pinopolis, SC during the reign of the Sorority’s sixteenth National President, Thelma T. Daley. The vision of the Founders of the Sorority was carried on by 20 courageous women, striving to make Berkeley County and the world a better place. The 74 chapter members implement programs and projects throughout the Berkeley County area that promote the Sorority’s 5-Programmitic Thrusts: 1. Economic Development, 2. Educational Development, 3. International Awareness and Involvement, 4. Physical and Mental Health and 5. Political Awareness and Involvement. The chapter continues to support and promote events and initiatives such as Delta G.E.M.S., Delta Academy, Voter Registration, Berkeley County School District’s Stuff the Bus Campaign, St. Jude’s Research, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Berkeley Habitat for Humanity, Department of Social Service’s Dress for Success Campaign and the Callen-Lacey Center for Children. The chapter annually awards several scholarships to young ladies graduating from the Berkeley County School District. Pamela Goodwine-Glover, a native of Ridgeville, SC, is serving as current Chapter President for the Summerville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for the 2012-2014 term. This is an exciting time to be in leadership as Delta Sigma Theta celebrates the Sorority centennial, “100 Years of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service”. Pamela is a Diamond Life Members who was initiated in the Alpha Xi Chapter at South Carolina State University in 1983. She is a 1986 graduate of South Carolina State University and received her MBA from Charleston Southern University in 1995. She is currently employed at Santee Cooper, a South Carolina Public Utility Company as a Financial Analyst. The Summerville Alumnae Chapter was chartered on April 24, 1988 by 20 Determined Deltas who were visionary women with a heart to improve the quality of life for the local citizens of Dorchester County. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Today the Summerville Alumnae Chapter is still going strong with 138 members who passionately serve Delta Sigma Theta and the citizens of Dorchester County. Summerville Alumnae's goal is to continue to be a bright beacon in the community. The members have demonstrated their commitment to service through supporting the community through donations and active service with organizations like The Palmetto House Homeless Shelter, Dorchester County Habitat for Humanity, Dorchester County Department of Social Services, My Sister’s House, and the Ridgeville Chapter of the NAACP. In addition, The Summerville Alumnae Chapter donates a yearly scholarship to each of the four high schools in Dorchester County: Summerville High School, Ashley Ridge High School, Fort Dorchester High School, and Woodlands High School. The chapter also sponsors two girl groups, The Betty Shabazz Delta Academy for middle school girls and the Delta GEMS for high school girls. Both groups focus on preparing young ladies for a prosperous future by teaching finer womanhood and exposing students to careers and college information. Committed to educating the next generation, the chapter supported Clay Hill Elementary School by donating 22 African-American nonfiction books in honor of the 22 founders, and chapter members spent the day painting murals and cleaning the greenhouse to help beauty the campus. In addition, chapter Sorors donated time and food to the Alston Middle School Read-In, a program that encourages students to read. The Summerville Alumnae Chapter looks forward with pride to the local celebration of their 25th Chartering Anniversary during April of 2013. Monthly chapter meetings are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month.

Dr. DaNine J. Fleming is the current chapter president of Lambda Nu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is an Assistant Professor and the Director of Training and Intercultural Education at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Claflin University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, she also earned a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education from the University of Charleston, an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from South Carolina State University, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio. In 2011, Dr. Fleming completed coursework and received a Certificate in Theology from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia and most recently she became a certified Doula through the Somatic Arts & Sciences Institute. She is a member of Canaan United Methodist Church in Givhans, Program Director for Tamika and Friends, Inc. a national human papillomavirus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer Awareness and Education organization, State Youth Coordinator for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., President of the Summerville/Ridgeville chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Certified Lay speaker and former Lay Leader (Walterboro District), childbirth educator and Doula. She is married to Travis Fleming and they have one beautiful daughter, Sydnei LaShon. She has served at the helm of Lambda Nu Zeta Chapter for the past four years. Lambda Nu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (Summerville/Ridgeville) was chartered on August 15, 1982. We commend our founding pearls for their unwavering dedication, and have strived to always uphold the rich legacy of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Following in the footsteps of our “Pearls,” we continue to have a diverse chapter with over 25 members who actively participate in many local, state, regional and national community service activities including, but not limited to: Community Baby Showers in conjunction with our national sponsors, the March of Dimes, the annual Tamika & Friends, Inc. Walk to Beat the Clock! Mae Francis Taylor is the president of Gamma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is a graduate of Limestone College, Gaffney, SC where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work and her Master’s of Divinity Degree from Erskine Theological Seminary, Due West, SC. She is currently the Senior Pastor of Joshua United Methodist Church in Moncks Corner SC. She is married to Reverend Marvin Taylor and they have seven children. Five phenomenal women founded Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. January 16, 1920 at Howard University in Washington, DC. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Gamma Zeta was chartered May 9, 1952. Lashanda Monique Ravenel serves as the Basileus of the Delta Iota Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. As the Basileus of the Charleston, SC chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho since 2010, Ms. Ravenel and her Sorors have been instrumental in strengthening community relationships, mentoring youth, and providing service. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmarks of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically. In 2003 after graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina. Ms. Ravenel returned to Charleston to become co-owner of H&M Travel Agency. In 2011 Ms. Ravenel received a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Strayer University, Charleston, SC. Since 2006 Ms. Ravenel has served as a restaurant district sales manager for the largest independently-operated convenience store chain in the southeastern United States. Ms. Ravenel is a member of New Bethel Sounds of Praise, Summerville, SC where she serves as member of the Perfecting Praise choir. In her spare time Ms. Ravenel enjoys mentoring young people and living the Sigma Gamma Rho motto of “Greater Service Greater Progress”.

Now an entrepreneur, Mary is the owner of Here & Beyond By Mary- A modern and trendy clothing boutique in Hollywood, SC. Ms. Ravenel is an active member of the Delta Iota Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, INC. She is presently the Advisor for Delta Iota Philos within her chapter and Chaplin of the organizations Board of Officers. Additionally from 2010-Present, Mary has served as President of Charleston Pan Hellenic Council of Greeks. As Charleston Pan Hellenic President, it is her goal to continue to give back to the community in the means of education, mentoring and assisting with the development of youth and collegiate students. She is involved in a copious amount of community service based organizations and initiatives throughout the State of South Carolina She's an active member of St Paul Church of Lord &Savior in Hollywood, SC where she serves in various capacities. Ms. Ravenel is the mother of two children, Monique Ravenel- a local District Manager and Henry Ravenel Jr. a local Entrepreneur. Through the years, Select Health has remained true to its mission: To help people get care, stay well and build healthy communities. Our focus on preventive care, education and personal empowerment leads First Choice members to improved health and a better overall quality of life. That’s why the First Choice health plan covers important well visits, preventive tests and screenings. In addition to standard Medicaid benefits, members of First Choice receive many expanded benefits and services like health education and nurse advice and support for free. They also have access to an extensive provider network of more than 8,000 primary care physicians and specialists in all of the state’s 46 counties.

Bright StartSM – This program is designed for pregnant women and their children. A dedicated team of nurse care managers, physicians and support staff connect First Choice members to helpful resources and services that assist women throughout their pregnancy and baby’s first year of life. We provide one-on-one care management for high-risk pregnancies. And if a baby is born prematurely and requires neonatal intensive care after birth, Bright Start staff continues to work with the families until the child’s first birthday, reminding parents of important well-child doctor’s visits and vaccination schedules. Staff also advise members and respond to any questions and concerns, especially when parents are learning to navigate the health care system with a new baby.

Children’s health – Because doctors need to see babies more frequently (recommended at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months and 30 months), First Choice also covers these important milestone visits for its tiniest members, as well as annual

In Control – When First Choice members with diabetes participate in the In Control program, they learn how to manage diabetes so they can live healthy, active lives. With the help of a Select Health nurse, they get needed care plus education about medicines, diet and testing supplies. Additionally, all First Choice members with diabetes receive a free glucose monitor.

Breathe Easy – This program teaches First Choice members of all ages about asthma and how to control it. They learn what triggers asthma as well as how to stop an attack, control symptoms and use medicines effectively. Syrita Frinks Sun City Events & Entertainment Syrita Frinks was born and raised in South Carolina, where she graduated third in her class at Low Country Academy in Charleston, SC in 1994. Syrita has over 20 years of experience in office management, specializing in payroll and scheduling. Her unmatched skills in problem solving, data entry, communication, and record keeping are essential to all aspects of Sun City Events & Entertainment (SCEE). Syrita, a sought after workshop facilitator by non-profits and corporations, conducts workshops in the areas of customer service, safety strategies, and Internet safety for all age groups. Among her responsibilities at Sun City Events & Entertainment, which assists the Thomas Media Group, is the management of the registration, scoring, and notification systems for the Black Expo Gospel Showcase that awards over $200,000 in cash prizes through its annual gospel competition. Syrita has received several awards for providing excellent service and care in the areas of human resources, customer service, charity, and volunteerism, as well as being awarded Dispatcher of the Year in Henry County, GA as a 911 Dispatcher. Her skill set includes human resources management, customer service, and emergency services. In 2004, after accepting a position with iKobo, in Atlanta, GA, she worked her way up from customer service representative to call center director. She accomplished this in a short two-year period and remained with the company until it was bought out in 2008. Syrita then decided to go into business with her mother, Brenda Frinks and brother, Javan Frinks, as the vice president of administration at Sun City Events & Entertainment in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Ms. Frinks has always held the arts in high regard, and as such, has an interest in all areas of art. She has a true appreciation for teaching, sharing her knowledge with people of all ages and delights in seeing others enjoy life and learn new things. Derek Boyd Hankerson FREEDOM ROAD/BLACK HERITAGE TRAIL Derek Boyd Hankerson moved to St. Augustine, Florida eleven years ago to be closer to his mother after his father’s death. Mr. Hankerson’s father was a native of St. Augustine, and his parents were married for fifty years. Mr. Hankerson is the youngest of their three children and his family’s roots in the St. Johns County and St. Augustine area date back to the 1700’s. He is from one of the oldest West African (Gullah-Geechee) Black families in Florida, St. Augustine and St. Johns County and he like past generations of his family continue to contribute to this area with reference to economic development and community involvement. Mr. Hankerson currently serves as Managing Partner/Executive Producer of Freedom Road, LLC which is an African-American Destination Management Company located in St. Augustine. Also, Mr. Hankerson recently became Director of Governmental Affairs at the local News Talk radio station WFOY/WAOC, which is broadcast from St. Augustine, Florida and he is co-host of the Kris Phillips Morning Show, which air on Thursday morning from 8:00am – 9:00a.m. However, Mr. Hankerson is broadening his market and will be focusing on Heritage, Culture, Travel and Tourism via radio programming, documentary films, and expanding the destination management region to include the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Mr. Hankerson is a world traveler, explorer, conducting primary research, lectures, writes and gives presentations on accurate American History. To include the African-Diaspora and the great migration on Africans in New World, and on Florida’s, St. Augustine’s rich multi-cultural past and international history. Mr. Hankerson retired from Government after serving some twenty plus years in federal, state, and local government. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.A. in Government and Politics and Speech Communications. He is also an alumnus of Bowie State University, which is one of the nation’s Historical Black Colleges & Universities, where he pursued graduate studies in Organizational Communication. While at Bowie, he was appointed as Graduate Student Member to the University President’s Council. In 2006, Mr. Hankerson completed his Master’s Degree in Management and Leadership from Webster University, North Florida Region, while working full-time, and staying involved in his community of St. Johns County. He is considering a Doctorate in Leadership or Global Operations. Mr. Hankerson served as a member of the St. Johns County Educational Foundation Board and as Special Events Chairman for the Fort Mose Historical Society. Fort Mose is the first free legally sanctioned black settlement in what is now known as the United States, and the foundation was named by Governor Jeb Bush as a Point of Light Foundation award recipient. He currently serves as a board member for the Boys and Girls Club and he is a founding member of the new club in the St. Augustine area. Finally, Mr. Hankerson and Freedom Road has been the catalyst connecting Fort Mose to the National Park Service (NPS) Underground Railroad Network, and the NPS Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Fort Mose is an official Underground Railroad Network partner with the National Park Service, and the Gullah/Geechie Cultural Heritage Corridor is in the process of being extended to St. Augustine and St. Johns County. Mr. Hankerson has also proactively sought the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Project to St. Johns County where in 2012 St. Augustine played host to NPS.

If you are unable to make your mortgage payment:

1. Don't ignore the problem. The further behind you become, the harder it will be to reinstate your loan and the more likely that you will lose your house.

2. Contact your lender as soon as you realize that you have a problem. Lenders do not want your house. They have options to help borrowers through difficult financial times.

3. Open and respond to all mail from your lender. The first notices you receive will offer good information about foreclosure prevention options that can help you weather financial problems. Later mail may include important notices of pending legal action. Your failure to open the mail will not be an excuse in foreclosure court.

4. Know your mortgage rights.

9. Avoid foreclosure prevention companies.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds free or very low-cost housing counseling nationwide. Housing counselors can help you understand the law and your options, organize your finances and represent you in negotiations with your lender, if you need this assistance. Find a HUD-approved housing counselor near you or call (800) 569-4287 or TTY (800) 8778339.

You don't need to pay fees for foreclosure prevention help--use that money to pay the mortgage instead. Many for-profit companies will contact you promising to negotiate with your lender. While these may be legitimate businesses, they will charge you a hefty fee (often two or three month's mortgage payment) for information and services your lender or a HUD-approved housing counselor will provide free if you contact them.

7. Prioritize your spending. After healthcare, keeping your house should be your first priority. Review your finances and see where you can cut spending in order to make your mortgage payment. Look for optional expenses-cable TV, memberships, entertainment--that you can eliminate. Delay payments on credit cards and other "unsecured" debt until you have paid your mortgage.

8. Use your assets. Do you have assets--a second car, jewelry, a whole life insurance policy--that you can sell for cash to help reinstate your loan? Can anyone in your household get an extra job to bring in additional income? Even if these efforts don't significantly increase your available cash or your income, they demonstrate to your lender that you are willing to make sacrifices to keep your home.

10. Don't lose your house to foreclosure recovery scams! If any firm claims they can stop your foreclosure immediately and if you sign a document appointing them to act on your behalf, you may well be signing over the title to your property and becoming a renter in your own home! Never sign a legal document without reading and understanding all the terms and getting professional advice from an attorney, a trusted real estate professional or a HUD-approved housing counselor.

Find your loan documents and read them so you know what your lender may do if you can't make your payments. Learn about the foreclosure laws and timeframes in your state (as every state is different) by contacting the State Government Housing Office.

As a podiatrist, I treat a variety of foot problems both conservatively and surgically. Foot pain is not normal. A local podiatrist can often quickly diagnose and treat the problem to get you back into the activities that you enjoy. P la n t a r F a s c i it i s / H e e l S p u r s There are many causes of heel discomfort ranging from fractures and bone tumors, to nerve complications and you don’t have to live with it. One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis/heel spurs. There is a thick, fibrous ligament on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. This can become inflamed and cause pain when you first get out of bed or during the day as you move around. If the inflammation occurs at the junction of the plantar fascia ligament and the heel bone, a bone spur will often develop.

1. Listen to Your Back- Pain is a warning sign. Your body is telling you that you have already or are about to cause damage. If what you are doing hurts then STOP. Do not try to push through the pain. 2. Drink Plenty of Water- Our bodies are comprised of approximately 70% water. Water keeps us pliable rather than stiff and rigid. Drinking water enhances the height of intervertebral disks, keeping them the healthy shock absorbers that they are. Water is necessary for nearly every bodily process so it is good to have in generous supply, try to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day.

5. Sleep Properly- Sleep in a comfortable position. On your side in the “fetal” position is usually the least stressful on your back. Sleeping on your front puts most stress on your back and neck and can lead to pain. Using a pillow at the right height to support your neck and between your knees is also important. 6. Avoid Long Periods of SittingSitting loads the spine and compresses the disks, leading to disc problems. If you sit for long periods of time, force yourself to get up from your seat as much as possible and move around. And gentlemen, take your wallet out of your back pocket before you have a seat. 7. Have a Six Pack- Of Abs! Your stomach muscles are the core of your fitness. Exercise and activity keep the muscles of the spine strong too. Include stretching in your fitness program to avoid stiffness which will add to back pain.

4. Lift correctly- You don’t have to lift something heavy in order to hurt your back. Picking up something light incorrectly is far more likely to hurt your back than picking up heavy objects correctly. When you pick up anything, no matter how heavy, get it as close to your body as possible and keep your back as straight as you can.

8. Pay Attention to Your PostureMaintaining good posture while you’re sitting and standing can be essential to preventing back pain. When you have good posture, the spine is properly aligned allowing muscles to relax.

Constipation is defined as a condition where the fecal matter is so tightly packed together that bowel movements are infrequent and incomplete. Constipation causes much difficulty and straining and produces dry hardened feces. The accumulation of old hardened feces sticks to the walls of the colon, interfering with the proper function of absorbing the remaining nutrients. The environment inside the colon affects the whole body system through blood stream and cells. A build up of toxins and impurities in the colon slowly poisons the entire body, this is called autointoxication. A healthy bowel should experience a movement for every meal eaten, but when bowel movements occur less often than food intake, it is considered constipated. Since most Americans eat three meals a day, they should have 3 corresponding bowel movements. However, many people experience one or fewer bowel movements each day. The the typical American diet consist largely of processed foods, refined sugars and starches which wreaks havoc on the body. Such high-fat, high-sugar food lacks the fiber and essential fatty acids necessary for proper bowel maintenance and greatly attributes to constipation.

Although a poor diet is one of the more common causes of constipation, other contributing factors can include lack of exercise, especially (cardiovascular), the use of certain medications, changes in routine, lack of time and environmental influences. Cardiovascular exercise stimulates the flow of lymph throughout the body, which is necessary for healthy peristalsis. It has also been shown that exercise accelerates food transit time through the large intestine. A faster transit time means less time for water to be absorbed in the colon, resulting in looser stools that are more easily passed. Medications such as anti-depressants, antihistamines, cold, pain, high blood pressure and high cholesterol drugs; antacids that contain aluminum, diuretics and antibiotics may also cause constipation in a number of different ways. Such medications can decrease digestive enzyme activity, obstruct nerve impulses, relax intestinal muscles, which leads to a decrease in peristalsis and kill healthy intestinal flora, all of which can greatly increase the likelihood of constipation. U. S. Surveys recently indicated that Constipation is the most common digestive complaint, resulting in about 2

Constipation is a very serious condition that in many cases, can lead to deteriorating health but many people accept occasional constipation a part of everyday life.
