From The Publisher... RISK VS. REWARD Risk vs. Reward? The question that would be entrepreneurs ask themselves when exploring potential enterprises and business opportunities. Like any seasoned gambler, the questions of risk loom large……what are the risk associated with leaving the comforts a bi-weekly paycheck? Is there a market for my product or service? Can I make the venture successful for the long term? The risk vs. reward question grows larger once those businesses are established and the question centers on opportunities for growth. The rewards are immeasurable…….economic stability, job growth, wealth generation, etc. The question of Risk vs. Reward can also be extended to our communities. What are the risk of not supporting minority owned businesses in our communities vs. the rewards for doing such? The answer seems simple to us……. when we fail to reinvest or in some cases invest in businesses in key areas, those businesses failed, jobs were lost or were not created and then became dilapidated or created the wrong type of business activity. When we support the business in the publication or AA business in general, we do so to the reward of generations to come. We simply must bear this in mind………when we don’t support these businesses and they fail, we have no one else to blame other than ourselves. We realized in 1990, the reward of promoting minority owned firms greatly outweighed any risk associated. Friends, Thank you for supporting the Upstate Black Pages. As an educator, leader, administrator, program director, mentor and community activist, she has spearheaded, planned, organized, and implemented many professional, civic and charitable activities. Dr. Jones is the Director of Children and Family Development for Sunbelt Human Advancement Resources (SHARE). She directs SHARE Head Start and Early Head Start Programs which provide quality comprehensive child development services Dr. Jones’ present and past affiliations and memberships includes; Greenville County Health Department Board; the Clemson University Early Childhood Education Advisory Board, South Carolina Head Start Association; the Region IV Head Start Association Board of Directors; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and Jack & Jill of America, Inc., Greenville Chapter. She also holds membership in the National Association for the Education of Young children (NAEYC). Dr. Jones is a phenomenal lady with an abundance of energy and talent. She is a caring person who does not hesitate to help others. Her involvement has made a difference in the lives of the many men, women and children that she has touched. Because of her concern and efforts Dr. Jones has made a lasting positive impact on her community, her state, her region and the nation. Dr. Rubye H. Jones holds degrees from Benedict College, University of Indiana, and Furman University. A retired educator of Greenville County Schools, she is the wife of John Jones and mother of two daughters and four grand children.

Dr. Warren J. Carson serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of South Carolina Upstate. In his role as diversity administrator, he oversees the University’s diversity plan and monitors the progress of the institution’s diversity goals, particularly with regard to the recruitment, hiring, and retention of minority faculty members. He also coordinates the access and equity efforts of the university. Dr. Carson is a 2010 graduate of the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leadership Academy and is a member of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education. Carson is in his 38th year in education, having been at USC Upstate for 29 years. He has served as professor of English, Chairperson of the department of English and Foreign Languages, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and for 25 year from 1984-2009, director of the well-known USC Upstate Gospel Choir. Carson serves as the Chief Reader for the Advanced Placement English Literature Exams, and serves on a number of national, regional, and local boards and committees. A native of Tryon, North Carolina, Carson holds a bachelors degree in English from UNC-Chapel Hill, an M.A. in African American Studies from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina.

L. Jerry Knighton, Jr. serves as Director of the Office of Access and Equity at Clemson University. In this role, he is responsible for monitoring the university's compliance with state and federal laws related to Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity and Equitable Treatment. He was appointed Outreach and Special Projects Coordinator for the International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in 2007 where he was responsible for monitoring efforts to increase minority business participation. Success with this effort led to an expanded role to include all Clemson University capital projects both public and private. He has been employed in higher education administration for over 23 years. A certified mediator, Knighton serves as the university’s Title IX coordinator and is an investigator of complaints of illegal discrimination and harassment. A 2008 graduate of the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leadership Academy, Knighton also provides a variety of training workshops designed to address issues such as sexual harassment, sexual orientation, and workplace diversity. Knighton served two terms as president of the South Carolina Professional Association for Access and Equity (SCPAAE) and currently is state coordinator for Region IV of the American Association for Affirmative Action. In April 2010, he was recognized by SC-PAAE for his outstanding service and dedication to the field of access and equity in the state of South Carolina. Knighton is from Clinton, SC. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he obtained both a B.A. in political science and a M.A. in Public Administration. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Educational Leadership at Clemson University with an anticipated graduation date in 2013.

In July 2009, Paula Harper Bethea was asked to serve as Interim Director of the South Carolina Education Lottery. In September 2009, she became the second Executive Director in the Lottery’s history. Mrs. Bethea had previously served as one of nine South Carolinians chosen to establish the Lottery in 2001. Prior to joining the lottery, Bethea was Director of External Affairs for the McNair Law Firm. Active in numerous local, state and national organizations, she chairs The Caring Coins Foundation on Hilton Head Island, is chairman of the board of First Financial Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiary, First Federal of Charleston, and serves on the board of the MCI Heritage Classic Foundation. Although Marguerite lives in Simpsonville, SC, her job takes her all over the Upstate. A typical day includes reaching out to various community partners to plan and coordinate health- related events designed to improve people’s health and overall quality of life. Her goal is to empower community members with health education and links to community resources available to help them. Marguerite answers questions about the First Choice health plan and encourages people to make healthy lifestyle choices. “I love the fact that Select Health takes a proactive role to ensure our members’ health and wellness, such as making phone calls to remind parents about their children’s immunizations and well- child check-ups,” said Marguerite. “This helps children develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. To hear members say they ‘have never had a health plan care as much as First Choice’ is very rewarding to me.” Marguerite was born in Asheville, NC, in Buncombe County. She graduated from West Charlotte High School in Charlotte, NC, and attended UNC Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, NC. She is married with two sons, and enjoys cooking and traveling.

Dean received his B. S. Degree in Social Sciences from Elon University, Elon, N.C. He has over 20 years experience in the public workforce development system and is currently the Executive Director for the Greenville County Workforce Investment Board; President of the South Carolina Workforce Development Area Administrators Association; a member of the Greenville County Commission for Technical and Higher Education (Area Commission); recipient of the 2011 Jobs for Americas Graduates (JAG) National Workforce Development Leadership Award.

LTC Clarence Bowser was born July 25, 1960 in Manhattan, New York. He graduated from Union High School, in Union, South Carolina. He later completed his undergraduate studies at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1982. Clarence is also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also has a Master’s Degree in Military Management from Touro University International. LTC Bowser began his military career in the United States Marine Corp Reserve in 1978, while simultaneously attending college. He transferred from the Marine Corp reserve to the South Carolina National Guard to attend officer candidate school. He received his officer commission through the Palmetto Military Academy, (The State of South Carolina’s Military Academy). After completion of PMA in 1986, a few months later, he attended Signal Officer Basic Course at Fort Gordon, GA in 1987. His first assignment as an officer was as the Wire Operations Officer for HHC 151st Signal Battalion in Greenville, South Carolina. He has held numerous communications assignments within the 228th Signal Brigade, prior to a subsequent military assignment with the 1-178th Field Artillery Battalion in Greer, South Carolina from 1993 – 1999, where he served as the Battery Commander from September 1996 – December 1998. He began his active duty assignment with the South Carolina National Guard in August 1998. Major Bowser volunteered for deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism as an Embedded Trainer to assist/train/mentor the Afghan Military. He deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in May 2007 where he served as the Communications Officer responsible for US, Coalition, and Afghan Communications for the entire southern region of Afghanistan. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in May 2008 at the beginning of his combat tour in May 2007. LTC Bowser distinguished himself during this combat tour earning numerous awards from Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M Device, culminating with receiving a Bronze Star Medal. He concluded his combat tour in May 2008, and is now serving as the Family Programs Director for the State of South Carolina. He is married to Linda and together they have three children, Ronardo, LaTasha, and Breghanna.

Benson I. Watt, III, Senior Vice President with Primerica Financial Services, is a fully licensed financial officer including series 6, 63, and 26 principle’s license. Under his leadership, several Regional Vice Presidents and more than 135 licensed agents have emerged in North and South Carolina. Benson and his wife Melody have earned one of the sixtyeight positions that make up the Primerica African American Leadership Council. The Watts have also been award numerous honors for their outstanding leadership and have traveled all over the country representing Primerica. The James “Curtis” Harkness Endowed Fund has been established in his memory at the Greenville Tech Foundation to help students with emergency financial needs. Harkness held several positions during his 16-year tenure at Greenville Tech before becoming vice president of student, diversity and community affairs, a position he held until his medical retirement. He was committed to making higher education accessible to all students. He stated in an interview that his top goal in life was to be a servant to the college, its students and the community. He was known for his love of people, and often was called the “gentle giant” for his height and kindness.

Regina Lewis University of South Carolina here was never a question as to whether Regina Lewis would go to college.

It just happened sooner than anyone might have expected. Lewis entered first grade at age four and in 1980 was a University of South Carolina freshman at age 15. “The agreement was that I would live at home, so Mom dropped me off at campus and picked me up every day for the first year,” Lewis said. With a bachelor’s degree in psychology at age 19, Lewis continued her studies at the University of Maryland law school in Baltimore. After graduation she landed a job at a large law firm. “And I did not enjoy it; it was not for me,” she said.

The practice is strong, and Lewis looks back with satisfaction on the different pathways she chose in her legal career.

His story of ministering in the heart of the poverty stricken communities in Virginia and educating young children on the causes of HIV, teen pregnancy, and education disparities, has equipped him to relate to and identify circumstances that impact our communities in Spartanburg. He understands the true urgency to assist and positively impact families and communities in need and works tirelessly to address those needs. He views people as God sees us, and therefore he is propelled to help and be available to the citizens of the Spartanburg Community. Dr. Jackson is constantly reminding those he meets that “You can’t minister to the unsaved or saved before you address their needs. Taking care of their needs is priority.”

W illis H. Cr osby, Jr., Ed.D., CCAM SHARE r. Willis H. Crosby, Jr., the oldest child of gospel legend Willis H. Crosby and Alwillie Hardy Crosby, was born on July 31, 1941 in Anderson South Carolina. During his boyhood on an Anderson County farm, Dr. Willis H. Crosby Jr. knew little of poverty.

“Oh we were poor kids - but we didn’t really know that we were poor until much later only because we felt so loved,” he notes, recalling an upbringing short on material possessions but long on family values. What’s more, his parents passed along three things that money cannot buy: a love of learning, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering adherence to the Golden Rule. “My mother and father gave us everything we needed to become successful.”

Crosby believes that most people want to be self-sufficient but many lack the resources, both internal and external, to do it on their own. Through SHARE, many of these low-income individuals and families are given the opportunity to help themselves. In 1999, the National Head Start Association recognized SHARE Head Start Program as one of the first ten Head Start Programs in the nation designated as National Head Start Program of Excellence. SHARE Head Start was recertified as a National Head Start Program of Excellence, in 2002, 2005 and 2008. In 2009, Governor Mark Sanford designated SHARE Head Start to represent South Carolina in the National Center of Excellence competition. Under Dr. Crosby’s nationally recognized leadership, SHARE generates over $75 million per year to the local economy in terms of goods purchased, jobs generated and taxes paid. The National Community Action Partnership, America’s largest anti-poverty network, awarded SHARE the inaugural Award for Excellence in Community Action in August of 2003. SHARE was selected as a National Head Start Association Outstanding Head Start Grantee for 2005 due to its success in areas of program management and service to children and families. He is married to Dr. Margaree Seawright Crosby, Professor of Education Emerita at Clemson University and President/CoOwner of the WILLMAR Group. Jil is fluent in Spanish and studied Japanese. She served as the Executive Director/CEO for the YWCA of Greenville for nearly 4 years. She currently serves at the first female President & CEO of the Urban League of the Upstate. Her role allows her to combine her passion for people and community into a job she loves!

On January 20, 2009, she was elected to serve on Greenville City Council. In the summer of 2011 she was re-elected to a full four year term. She is the youngest member on council and one of two minorities. Robert Henderson, Jr. is a native of the Jackson, Mississippi area. Mr. Henderson earned his Pre-Engineering degree from Hinds Community College and then a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University in May 1985. Later, Henderson received a Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Management from GMI Engineering and Management Institute in 1993. After spending more than 18 years within the corporate ranks at Fortune 500 Companies, General Motors and Delphi, Robert Henderson, Jr. took his entrepreneurial vision and subsequently established Vision 2 Destiny, Inc. in July 2003. Mr. Henderson contributes to the greater community as a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and through serving on the Board of Directors for the following organizations: Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce, Minority Enterprise Development Institute, Inc. (MEDII), and Spartanburg Regional Foundation-Cancer Division. Recognitions include being awarded the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce’s Minority Business Person of the Year (2008), Susan G. Komen For the Cure’s National Co-Survivor Award (2008), Susan G. Komen’s Upstate South Carolina Local Hero Award (2008), MEDII’s Growth and Development Award (2011), and Spartanburg’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award (2013). Mr. Henderson’s Life Motto is “It’s All About Relationships!” Mrs. Sheila Davis Henderson is a loyal and dedicated member of the community where she serves on many boards throughout the region. She is a devoted and active member of the Spartanburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. After 25 years of honorable service to the United States Navy, active and reserve, she continues her employment with Spartanburg County. Mrs. Henderson graduated from Converse College with a Master of Liberal Arts-Sociology and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg. She has represented South Carolina in the “Community Leaders Briefings and Discussions” at the White House. As she travels her journey in life, Mrs. Henderson truly believes that you have to “walk by faith, and not by sight.”

Gwendolyn Davis

Wells Fargo lthough Gwendolyn Davis was born in Brooklyn, NY she has strong South Carolina roots. Her mother was born and raised in Hemingway, SC where she still has siblings and other family members. Gwen graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a BS is Business Administration and earned a Masters of Clinical Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gwen’s financial services career began at First Union National bank as a Teller Supervisor and has had the opportunity to grow with the company. She has held many leadership positions within Wachovia/Wells Fargo and is currently a Vice-President and is the District Manager for the Outer Markets which includes 8 Wells Fargo Stores. Gwen is an active member of several public services organizations where she holds leadership positions. She is the proud mother of two college sons, both in college. Serving Anderson, Greenville, Oconee and Pickens counties

The Head Start Program of Excellence provides quality comprehensive child development services to 1,714 infants and toddlers and to three and four year old children. In 2012, the program operated twenty-four centers and one-hundred and eight classrooms. Children attend classes from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The program implements the High/Scope Curriculum which is a nationally recognized curriculum framework appropriate for young children. In addition, the program utilized the Second Step and Growing Readers curricula. Second Step is an anti-violence curriculum that emphasizes positive relationships, feelings, conflict resolution, and an overall positive classroom environment. The Growing Readers curriculum focuses on literacy development and experiences for preschool children. The lessons include alphabet recognition, phonological awareness, and critical thinking skills related to early literacy. Also included in the daily classroom activities are a nourishing breakfast, lunch and snack. Children receive medical and dental screening and followup care as needed. Comprehensive services are also provided to children with special needs.

Don’t graduate with a dead-end diploma. by Greenville Technical College

It’s easy to assume that the credits you earn at one college will transfer to the next. But that’s not always the case. If the college you attend isn’t regionally accredited, the credits you complete may not be accepted elsewhere, and if you decide to continue your education at another institution, you may have to start over.

That’s what happened to Avery Martin. He started at a college in Charlotte. When he decided that he wanted to pursue another major somewhere else, he found that his credits wouldn’t transfer, so he had to start from scratch. He enrolled at Greenville Tech and transferred to USC Upstate, and since both colleges are regionally accredited, the transfer process was seamless the second time around. In December, he’ll reach his goal, completing a bachelor’s degree in education.

If the credits you earn at one college don’t transfer to the next, and you want to earn a bachelor’s degree, you’ll have to start over. There are several accrediting bodies, and they’re not all the same. Learn about regional accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the body that awards accreditation to Greenville Tech, Clemson, USC, College of Charleston, and most other wellknown four-year colleges in South Carolina. Take approved classes at Greenville Tech and you won’t finish with a dead-end diploma.

Greenville Tech has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges since 1968. This year, as the college seeks reaffirmation, one component of the process is a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), something designed to enhance the education offered. Greenville Tech’s QEP defines a new process that will match student interests and abilities with the right academic program. Called “Steer Your Career,” the plan is designed to ensure students make well-informed decisions.

Jones Leads Workforce Investment Board to Partner with Greenville Tech

Dean E. Jones The Greenville County Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and Greenville Tech are both dedicated to the same cause: making a connection between qualified people and jobs. So it makes sense that the college and the WIB often work together. Dean Jones, executive director of Greenville County Workforce Investment Board, serves on Greenville Tech’s governing board. In that role, he has the opportunity to help the college fulfill its mission of driving personal and economic growth through learning.

The bottom line for both WIB and Greenville Tech is connecting people with opportunities. Working together, the two organizations can better meet the needs of people who need jobs and businesses that require a pipeline of qualified workers.

Black Pages

The two organizations partner in many ways. Jones was instrumental in working with college personnel to write a grant that was recently funded by the Department of Labor. The college will receive $14.1 million to lead a consortium of colleges across the state in developing programs focused on advanced manufacturing. The Greenville County Workforce Investment Board also works with Greenville Tech in administering the Workforce Investment Act program. People in need of career development services are referred to Greenville Tech for training, and WIA funds allow hundreds of students to attend the college each year.

Greenville Tech is a member of the board working on the National Fund for Workforce Solutions grant administered by the United Way of Greenville County. The college, the WIB, and other partners will work to promote sectorbased training that addresses skill shortages. Jones is part of the planning group for the Catalyst for Change initiative. Created by a group that also included the late Curtis Harkness and Pastor Curtis Johnson, the initiative will target southern Greenville County, seeking to develop a community based strategy that will focus on developing skill sets for youth and other workers within a targeted area as a means for attracting new business and industry.

Tips For Avoiding Foreclosure by Jil Littlejohn, President & CEO Urban League of The Upstate, Inc.

If you are unable to make your mortgage payment:

1. Don't ignore the problem. The further behind you become, the harder it will be to reinstate your loan and the more likely that you will lose your house.

2. Contact your lender as soon as you realize that you have a problem. Lenders do not want your house. They have options to help borrowers through difficult financial times.

3. Open and respond to all mail from your lender. The first notices you receive will offer good information about foreclosure prevention options that can help you weather financial problems. Later mail may include important notices of pending legal action. Your failure to open the mail will not be an excuse in foreclosure court.

4. Know your mortgage rights. Find your loan documents and read them so you know what your lender may do if you can't make your payments. Learn about the foreclosure laws and timeframes in your state (as every state is different) by contacting the State Government Housing Office.

6. Contact a HUD-approved housing counselor.

9. Avoid foreclosure prevention companies.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds free or very low-cost housing counseling nationwide. Housing counselors can help you understand the law and your options, organize your finances and represent you in negotiations with your lender, if you need this assistance. Find a HUD-approved housing counselor near you or call (800) 569-4287 or TTY (800) 8778339.

You don't need to pay fees for foreclosure prevention help--use that money to pay the mortgage instead. Many for-profit companies will contact you promising to negotiate with your lender. While these may be legitimate businesses, they will charge you a hefty fee (often two or three month's mortgage payment) for information and services your lender or a HUD-approved housing counselor will provide free if you contact them.

7. Prioritize your spending. After healthcare, keeping your house should be your first priority. Review your finances and see where you can cut spending in order to make your mortgage payment. Look for optional expenses-cable TV, memberships, entertainment--that you can eliminate. Delay payments on credit cards and other "unsecured" debt until you have paid your mortgage.

8. Use your assets. Do you have assets--a second car, jewelry, a whole life insurance policy--that you can sell for cash to help reinstate your loan? Can anyone in your household get an extra job to bring in additional income? Even if these efforts don't significantly increase your available cash or your income, they demonstrate to your lender that you are willing to make sacrifices to keep your home.

10. Don't lose your house to foreclosure recovery scams! If any firm claims they can stop your foreclosure immediately and if you sign a document appointing them to act on your behalf, you may well be signing over the title to your property and becoming a renter in your own home! Never sign a legal document without reading and understanding all the terms and getting professional advice from an attorney, a trusted real estate professional or a HUD-approved housing counselor.

Through the years, Select Health has remained true to its mission: To help people get care, stay well and build healthy communities. Our focus on preventive care, education and personal empowerment leads First Choice members to improved health and a better overall quality of life. That’s why the First Choice health plan covers important well visits, preventive tests and screenings. In addition to standard Medicaid benefits, members of First Choice receive many expanded benefits and services like health education and nurse advice and support for free. They also have access to an extensive provider network of more than 8,000 primary care physicians and specialists in all of the state’s 46 counties.

Bright StartSM – This program is designed for pregnant women and their children. A dedicated team of nurse care managers, physicians and support staff connect First Choice members to helpful resources and services that assist women throughout their pregnancy and baby’s first year of life. We provide one-on-one care management for high-risk pregnancies. And if a baby is born prematurely and requires neonatal intensive care after birth, Bright Start staff continues to work with the families until the child’s first birthday, reminding parents of important well-child doctor’s visits and vaccination schedules. Staff also advise members and respond to any questions and concerns, especially when parents are learning to navigate the health care system with a new baby.

Children’s health – Because doctors need to see babies more frequently (recommended at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months and 30 months), First Choice also covers these important milestone visits for its tiniest members, as well as annual

Breathe Easy – This program teaches First Choice members of all ages about asthma and how to control it. A mammogram is an x-ray used to locate small or indistinctly shaped breast lumps that may not be felt during a breast exam. Members also receive a complimentary copy of the First Choice Woman magazine, an annual publication designed exclusively for our female members. The magazine includes a variety of tips for women on-the-go, including healthy recipes, exercise tips, parenting advice and disease-specific information.

A Moment in Black History...

Contractors In 1890 Thorny Lafon (1810-93) was thought to be the first black millionaire. He was a New Orleans real estate speculator and moneylender. He was recognized as a community activist and philanthropist before the Civil War when he was still a young man. He was listed as a merchant in the New Orleans City Directory in 1842; in 1868 the directory listed him as a broker, and he was considered the city’s second leading black broker until 1870. As his wealth grew he gave freely to those less fortunate, including religious and anti-slavery causes, and supported the Lafon Orphan Boys’ Asylum and the Home for Aged Colored Men and Women, both of which he founded. The Thorny Lafon School, dedicated in 1898, made him the first black man and the second black person in New Orleans to have a school named for him. The Wall of Fame at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair listed his name along with those of other blacks, Native Americans, and foreign-born Americans who were notable contributors to American process and culture. He lived frugally, and provided for his relatives, and friends, but he left the bulk of his estate to charity. GHS Expectations GHS demands the best products and services at the lowest competitive price in order to pass those needs on to our patient base. Each company is measured against the same set of high expectations and standards regardless of size and/or classification.

Who can participate as an M/WBE? A minority or woman-owned business is a for-profit enterprise, regardless of size, physically located in the United States or its trust territories, which is owned, operated and controlled by minority group members. "Minority group members" are United States citizens who are Asian, Black, Hispanic, Women and Native American. Ownership by minority individuals means the business is at least 51% owned by such individuals or, in the case of a publicly-owned business, at least 51% of the stock is owned by one or more such individuals; further, the management and daily operations are controlled by those minority group members. 10 Tips for Preventing Back Pain by Absolute Medical Clinic 904-743-2222

1. Listen to Your Back- Pain is a warning sign. Your body is telling you that you have already or are about to cause damage. If what you are doing hurts then STOP. Do not try to push through the pain. 2. Drink Plenty of Water- Our bodies are comprised of approximately 70% water. Water keeps us pliable rather than stiff and rigid. Drinking water enhances the height of intervertebral disks, keeping them the healthy shock absorbers that they are. Water is necessary for nearly every bodily process so it is good to have in generous supply, try to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day.

5. Sleep Properly- Sleep in a comfortable position. On your side in the “fetal” position is usually the least stressful on your back. Sleeping on your front puts most stress on your back and neck and can lead to pain. Using a pillow at the right height to support your neck and between your knees is also important. 6. Avoid Long Periods of SittingSitting loads the spine and compresses the disks, leading to disc problems. If you sit for long periods of time, force yourself to get up from your seat as much as possible and move around. And gentlemen, take your wallet out of your back pocket before you have a seat. 7. Have a Six Pack- Of Abs! Your stomach muscles are the core of your fitness. Exercise and activity keep the muscles of the spine strong too. Include stretching in your fitness program to avoid stiffness which will add to back pain.

4. Lift correctly- You don’t have to lift something heavy in order to hurt your back. Picking up something light incorrectly is far more likely to hurt your back than picking up heavy objects correctly. When you pick up anything, no matter how heavy, get it as close to your body as possible and keep your back as straight as you can.

8. Pay Attention to Your PostureMaintaining good posture while you’re sitting and standing can be essential to preventing back pain. When you have good posture, the spine is properly aligned allowing muscles to relax.

Constipation:

Constipation is defined as a condition where the fecal matter is so tightly packed together that bowel movements are infrequent and incomplete. Constipation causes much difficulty and straining and produces dry hardened feces. The accumulation of old hardened feces sticks to the walls of the colon, interfering with the proper function of absorbing the remaining nutrients. The environment inside the colon affects the whole body system through blood stream and cells. A build up of toxins and impurities in the colon slowly poisons the entire body, this is called autointoxication. A healthy bowel should experience a movement for every meal eaten, but when bowel movements occur less often than food intake, it is considered constipated. Since most Americans eat three meals a day, they should have 3 corresponding bowel movements. However, many people experience one or fewer bowel movements each day. The the typical American diet consist largely of processed foods, refined sugars and starches which wreaks havoc on the body. Such high-fat, high-sugar food lacks the fiber and essential fatty acids necessary for proper bowel maintenance and greatly attributes to constipation.

Although a poor diet is one of the more common causes of constipation, other contributing factors can include lack of exercise, especially (cardiovascular), the use of certain medications, changes in routine, lack of time and environmental influences. Cardiovascular exercise stimulates the flow of lymph throughout the body, which is necessary for healthy peristalsis. It has also been shown that exercise accelerates food transit time through the large intestine. A faster transit time means less time for water to be absorbed in the colon, resulting in looser stools that are more easily passed. Medications such as anti-depressants, antihistamines, cold, pain, high blood pressure and high cholesterol drugs; antacids that contain aluminum, diuretics and antibiotics may also cause constipation in a number of different ways. Such medications can decrease digestive enzyme activity, obstruct nerve impulses, relax intestinal muscles, which leads to a decrease in peristalsis and kill healthy intestinal flora, all of which can greatly increase the likelihood of constipation. U. S. Surveys recently indicated that Constipation is the most common digestive complaint, resulting in about 2

million annual visits to the doctor. However, most people treat themselves without seeking medical help. Approximately $725 million dollars are spent on laxatives yearly. Constipation is a very serious condition that in many cases, can lead to deteriorating health but many people accept occasional constipation a part of everyday life. This condition should be taken seriously because the environment inside the colon directly affects the overall general health of a person.
