Only recently has it become more accepted within the psychological community (Patton, 2002). Our text (Shaughnessy, Zechmeister, & Zechmeister, 2009) categorizes observational research into three types: Participant observation, structured observation, and field experiments. There are other ways of categorizing it. That itself gives us a sense of how varied observational research methodologies can be. Are you an advocate for this type of research within psychology?
