The European market for stretched ceiling applications requires materials with good fire reaction and medium smoke emission (BS2D0). For CE labeling according to the NF EN 14716 standard, the EN 13501-1 standard for measuring fire reaction and smoke emission considers 3 different aspects for classifying the material: heat, smoke and dripping. As the smoke density is the main cause for killing people in the case of fire, our aim has been to improve the current state of the art performance of the materials used for stretched ceilings. Using the right combination of a new formulation and our calendaring process, we have developed and produced new plasticised PVC films with Bs1d0 classification, which means the best smoke density classification achievable with plastic films. 16 – SolVin Award 2010

Innovation Award energeto® is a window without a metallic thermal bridge in the frame-sash construction. The system boasts high heat insulation values in all versions and profile depths. This contributes actively to the reduction of CO2, the saving of heating costs and consequently to environmental protection. Moreover energeto® combines outstanding technology with an appealing design. The insulation properties of the metal-free window obtained by bonding window sash with the insulating glass pane as well as by replacing the steel reinforcement by fiber-glass reinforced plastic strips have been further improved by foaming the profile chambers with special polyurethane foam. By this means, energeto® now reaches unprecedented insulation Uw-values of 0.61 W/m²K.

PVC tactile footway for blind and visually impaired people

Low VOC stabilisation system based on pastes for the flooring industry

This simple system, having only two basic codes, makes it easy to identify the footway, turns, changes in direction, warning lines. It provides the foot with a clear tactile perception which is hard to ignore, transmitting a constant warning and sense of alert thanks to the specially designed height and radius of the pattern. Based on a limited number of clear design principles (universality of signs, safety, durability), this product can be used in a very wide range of applications, both outdoors and indoors. Footways made with this system allow blind and visually impaired people to improve their autonomy and mobility by actively using the tactile information provided by the paving to their feet and/or long cane. This system further helps visually impaired people by means of colour contrasts between the footway and the surrounding paving.

The new low VOC paste stabilisation system helps the flooring industry to reduce emissions whilst retaining all of the performance benefits of the traditional liquid stabilisers. It is suitable for filled/ pigmented plastisols as well as for clear plastisols.

> Massimo Battista > +39 0823 581 054 > Italy

> Emilio Pellegrini > +39 317 451 366 > United Kingdom

These new Ca/Zn paste stabilisers are specially designed for the stabilisation of the clear topcoat (wear layer) which is the main contributor to the emissions from flooring. The performances of these new stabilisers are comparable to those of traditional liquid stabilisers, in terms of heat stability, transparency, colour hold, aging properties‌ Key further advantages are the absence of phosphites and long chain alcohols, thus giving a substantial reduction in the noticeable odour.

easySWEET: a new generation of PVC bearing walls for the building of “low-cost” residences

DucaFreeze: a calcium organic rigid PVC-based purge compound that actually works

easySWEET is a range of 7 models of low-cost residences delivered in kit and transportable economically without abnormal load or lifting machines. This new generation of prefabricated solutions (from 13 to 45 square meters) uses an ingenious system of construction constituted mainly by PVC which allows to realize design, economic, flexible and resistant constructions.

It can take hours to change colours or clean down when processing PVC, plus the constant risk that tooling might be damaged by decomposition or dismantling procedures. This equates to costs and reduced profits. Ducafreeze is a rigid Calcium Organic-based high temperature freeze/purge compound that actually works and has been proven to compete against lead-based freeze/purge compounds. Freeze/purge compounds can cut clean down costs and colour changes providing less scrap and lower tool maintenance. This reduces costs and dramatically reduces machine downtime. Extruwood-CAP: PVC based wood-composites, a technical innovation for wood-windows

Thermoplastic elastomeric compound based on PVC-P for gaskets, pipes and cables sheathing

Aluminum caps are often used for the weather protection of wood-windows. Due to their design the wood frame will loose insulation capability. Extruwood-Cap will bridge the gap with an environmental friendly nature based weather protection for wood windows. High thermal insulation capability of Extruwood-Cap will entitle wood window manufacturer either to save material (less frame thickness and/or window glass thickness to ensure an optimum UF-value of the window) or comply with national building codes to replace existing windows without main re-construction works.

This invention concerns the formulation of a brand new material highly resistant to normal disinfectants used in swimming pool water disinfection and the co-extrusion process needed to couple this material to a flexible hose in order to create, inside the hose itself, a chlorine proof internal layer. Thanks to that, it is possible to lay a thin protective skin on the internal side of the hose able to protect itself from chlorine water attack. This is strongly useful in order to improve chemical and physical hose resistance and its mechanical properties during its working life with an increase in product life time as well. The new protective skin, made of a particular high molecular weight PVC resin and innovative plasticizers, is laid on the internal surface of a plasticized PVC stripe throughout co-extrusion process before wrapping the stripe itself on a mandrel. A brand new extrusion head engine enables to couple and glue different layers made of different materials. > Rita Mascolo > +39 0444 461 000 > Italy SolVin Award 2010 – 29

Innovation Award GKV Future perspective: plastic windows construction as a dedicated job qualification Until 2007/2008 there was no training for PVC window assemblers. Thanks to the initiative of the GKV this lack of a qualified training has been addressed. The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology recently added the ‘PVC-window assembler’ training programme to the training of plastics and rubber technology processing engineer. More than 50 years after the introduction of PVC windows into the market, German PVC window producers have now the possibility to train their own junior staff in a qualified way. Introduction of this PVC window assembler training has two main advantages. Firstly, the official approval improves the image of the PVC window sector and, more generally, that of the whole PVC business. Logix 45: the flagship product for electrical installation in commercial buildings in France

Mosaic™ program DLPe snap-on trunking: a new solution for wiring devices installation in commercial buildings

Thanks to a successful association of soft and rigid PVC, the new PVC LOGIX 45™ range offers a quick, easy and intuitive installation of wiring devices in commercial environment. For several years and in many countries all over the world Legrand DLPe* is the reference trunking system for cable management and wiring devices installation in commercial buildings. Nowadays DLP or DLPe has become a generic word designing electrical trunking especially in commercial environment. Usually, dedicated mounting accessories are necessary to fit wiring devices in the trunking. These accessories take into account dispersion in dimensions due to manufacturing processes and corresponding variable play between the moulded parts of the wiring device and the extruded profile. > Jean-Michel Rossignol > +33 243 525 252 > France

The product combines aesthetic and technical advantages of round corner associated with flexible cover and convenience of snap on installation for Mosaic™ wiring devices. In traditional electrical trunking design, wiring devices are fit in the trunking thanks to mounting devices. Therefore a potential drawback of snap on design is that the wiring device may be not so firmly attached in the trunking. To overcome this limitation Planett Wattohm has introduced a new version of its LOGIX 45™ product: in the new design, a thin layer of soft PVC is coextruded with the white rigid PVC on both inner sides of the trunking thus bordering the 45mm wide aperture. Flexibility of PVC cord provides a good adaptation to the play between the actual width of the opening and the precise 45 mm width of wiring devices. On the other hand excellent grip of plasticized PVC helps to secure the mounting. > Jean-Michel Rossignol > +33 2 43 52 52 52 > France

Since 2007 KTN Italia transported PVC in bulk by 45’ container with a liner from the SolVin plant in Southern France to Cremona, where the content is unloaded into a silo. After unloading the liner is removed and the container is re-used to export Italian finished goods and not raw materials to the South of France. Before the project the bulk trucks returned 100% empty to France, today the 45’ hybrid containers return from Italy to France 100% full of other palletized products. There’s just one problem: the single use liner to transport the PVC is made of polyethylene: and PVC and PE are not compatible… As the product transported from France to Cremona is always the same, was born the idea of a re-usable liner. After various unsatisfactory tests with liners of enforced PE and raffia PP, we found the solution with a liner made of polyester reinforced PVC. The method designed by KlĂśckner Pentaplast makes it possible to measure these and to store them in the memory, even in random distribution. The aim is to distinguish the original packaging from counterfeit product packaging. It is even possible, by analyzing the doses used in counterfeit packaging, to trace these back to their origin. Polyurethane-based adhesive system for bonding insulating glass units to window casements

High-tech skai “cool colors plus” film for window profiles

By offering Ködiglaze P, a product whose rheological properties can be adjusted with the help of PVC, KÖMMERLING has developed a special adhesive for the bonding of windows at the rebate base. This system opens up completely new possibilities for window constructors and system providers in realizing building designs. The bonding technique offers both technical and economic benefits, such as cost savings because less steel is used and less production effort is required, it provides better burglar protection and an improved insulation Uw value. The adhesive system and the edge bond of the insulation glass must be compatible and coordinated with each other. KÖMMERLING offers the edge bond and the adhesive system as an integrated concept from a single supplier.

Skai “cool colors plus” film reflects the sun’s infrared rays so effectively, regardless of substrate, that even with extremely dark colors the heating of the laminated window or profile system is greatly reduced, preventing warping and deformation. This permits the use of non-steel plastic window systems in dark colors, contributing to a longer serviceable life and thus sustainability of the entire system. The “cool colors plus” film is effective in any type of solar radiation, whether moderate or strong. It has even been certified for colored windows systems in so-called “dry and hot climatic regions” such as in Southern Europe. > Rainer Irouschek > +49 7947 81 574 > Germany

Self Cleaning Syphon

Digital printing on soft uncoated expanded PVC

PVC is the most used material to make siphons. This project aims to improve its functionality by making a part of it in flexible PVC. When a siphon is blocked, you have to contact a plumber to fix it. When you try to fix it yourself, it is very common that the siphon leaks afterwards. We have tried to improve the functionality by replacing the lower part of it by a flexible PVC tube, in a way that a non professional can easily unblock it by squeezing the tube. The gain is both on time and cost. It is also possible to prevent blocking by regular squeezing, since this is a clean, quick and easy job.

The digital printing on soft uncoated expanded PVC, into an industrial process, allows sophisticated printing for this kind of products, especially for short series, still at a same level of price. The process gives really new perspectives to a commonplace product.

PVC-coated sound absorbing textile fabric

PVC pan for sloped green roofs

The topic of acoustic design is becoming more and more significant in many areas of our daily life. Our performance is largely dependent on our well-being and on a stress-free environment. The point is to create an atmosphere that minimizes noise pollution. The Sound Absorption project represents a new innovative solution. The soundabsorbing textile fabric coated with PVC that has been developed has acoustic properties by virtue of dimensionally stable micropores and is especially suited for applications in interior architecture and in trade fair constructions. The highly sound-absorbing properties of the textile fabric reduce the impact of noise sources and offer additional possibilities for innovative interior design.

Novintiss designed a PVC pan for sloped green roofs. The Green Roofs market is young and high growth is expected. Green roofs bring excellent thermal insulation and soundproofing. Pans are needed for flat and sloped green roofs in order to maintain life of plants (water reservoir and drainage functions). Steel and polypropylene pans are used for sloped roofs (far more difficult than flat roofs). A PVC pan has been designed in order to bring stiffness, lightness and be easy to handle and assemble for making a complete green roof.

Electro pipe with EMI shielding properties

Low smoke PVC electro pipe

Electric installation conduits with an added functionality: shielding of electromagnetic fields generated by electric current in the wires that are covered by the conduits. This phenomenon is also called “electrosmog”.

Polyvinyl chloride has a relatively high chlorine content. Therefore, many PVC compositions have good flame retardancy. This is especially true for unplasticized PVC compositions. Without special additives, rigid PVC complies with the fire test of the European standard for electro pipes (IEC 61386). However, a certain level of smoke development does occur when ordinary PVC electric conduits are set in fire. Although this particular standard does not contain requirements concerning smoke evolution, a reduction of the smoke evolution is desired.

Possible applications: – added functionality on electro pipes that contributes to the general health protection of people in buildings – extra protection of data in cables in those locations where data cables and power cables are in close proximity – prevent disruption of sensitive equipment in hospitals The electric conduits for installation of wire and cables can be either stiff/smooth or corrugated. > Jan de Boer > +31 228 355 544 > The Netherlands

Sinepipe

PVC plate with a wood design for deep-drawing applications

Low cost, large diameter dual wall corrugated pipe

Plastic door and window elements with a wood design and feel have very good weather resistance, low cost and high versatility. However, due to the different production steps, the profiles and the door leaves show slight differences in terms of visual appearance and feel. The project was motivated by the need to generate a semi-finished product that had exactly the same visual appearance and feel as the decoration film that it was based on. The semi-finished product had to be combined with the decoration film in a continuous process without using adhesives. To achieve this, a special apparatus was developed, designed and built, which can integrate the lamination directly into the plate production process. The process is configured in such a way that the embossed pattern typical of a film is retained and is even more resistant to the structural leveling that is typical for the thermoforming process.

Inadequate sanitation in developing countries has a high material impact on human health, social and economic development and ecosystem sustainability. In urban areas with high economic activities and large environmental impact every single Euro invested in a sewer infrastructure has 4-10 Euro economic return. Sinepipe has developed a revolutionary, patented production technology for light weight PVC sewer and storm water pipes. Sinepipe reduces the capital investment of a total production line to 1/3. This radical innovation eliminates the expensive mold blocks that are characteristic for the state-of-the-art dual wall corrugated pipe production, but maintains the high benefits of this product. This unique Sinepipe innovation will make it possible to build affordable, long life sewer and storm water infrastructure in urban areas of developing countries resulting in improvement of public health, environment and economic development.

PVC based coated textiles for food applications

Anti-graffiti lacquers for PVC substrates

Years ago Sioen actively responded to the needs of its customers by developing new PVC based qualities with reduced ecological impact. Our broad range of phthalate free PVC coated textiles is one example. Another more recent development deals with food grade PVC coated polyester fabrics that can be used as flexitank material for e.g. drinking water (B6303, 1100 g/m2) or as cover material for e.g. fruits and vegetables (B7303, 550 g/m2). Both products are fully compliant with European legislation (European Directive 2002/72/EC and its amendments) on food packaging materials, meaning that: all ingredients are listed on the European positive lists, individual and overall migration limits are respected, requirements with respect to smell and taste are respected. Detailed chemical analysis of numerous competitor products for food applications showed that Sioen’s products are unique!

Graffiti is a general problem in our society. Once applied onto walls, plastics, wood, etc. these substances are very difficult to get rid off. The same goes for graffiti on PVC coated polyester substrates. Since graffiti paints are all based on aggressive solvents, PVC coated textiles (e.g. trailer covers, tents & textile architectures, train covers, banners, etc.) are irreversibly damaged due to the penetration of its ingredients into the substrate. As a spin-off activity within the European project CONTEX-T, Sioen has developed a unique lacquer that can withstand these aggressive graffiti paints. This lacquer, which is based on advanced copolymeric species, can be applied by coating or spraying and results in an excellent barrier to all kinds of graffiti paints. > Bert Groenendaal > +32 476 984 379 > Belgium

PVC based photovoltaic (PV) laminates Sioen produces ca. 75 Mio m of coated textiles per year, the majority being based on PVC as coating material. Since 2008 Sioen has been actively researching the possibilities to incorporate electronics into such technical textiles. Examples are incorporation of light, electronic security systems, heating and photovoltaic cells. Incorporation of electronics strongly increases the functionality of the coated textiles and results in new materials for all kinds of applications. This submission is focussed on PVC based flexible photovoltaic laminates that can be (non-) permanently connected to PVC coated fabrics, e.g. for tents and textile architectures, trailers, etc. Sioen expects to commercialize its PV laminates by Q4 2010 under the name SioSOLAR. 2

Thermoplastic UV curable coatings (laquers and links) Each year hundreds of millions m2 of PVC coated textiles are being lacquered with solvent-based lacquers worldwide. Since such lacquers typically consist of 10% solids and 90% solvents, this implicates enormous energy costs for drying and huge emissions of VOCs/CO2 to the environment (solvents are burned > CO2 emission). Since mid 2008 Sioen Industries and Deceuninck have jointly worked on the development of thermoplastic UV coatings that can replace solvent based systems on short term. Due to unique combinations of monomeric and oligomeric species we have identified formulations that can be applied onto the PVC substrate via traditional rotogravure followed by UV curing under a set of UV lamps for instantaneous drying. The resulting materials combine good welding properties (thermal and HF) with similar mechanical properties, thermal and UV stability, flexibility, etc. as solvent based products. > Bert Groenendaal > +32 476 984 379 > Belgium

PVC-O pressure pipes for conveyance potable water irrigation and industrial uses

Technology and application development for welding PVC-based wood-plastic composites

The project involves the production of PVC-O pressure pipes for conveyance drinkable water, irrigation and industrial uses. The process was made possible thanks to the phenomenon of biaxial molecular orientation during the production of rigid PVC pipes. In this way the molecular chains of PVC and their layout change from random to well organized type compared to a laminated. The process of molecular orientation developed by Molecor and licensed to Sirci Gresintex ensures high productivity and repeatability thanks to control temperature, pressure and strain rate during molecular orientation. In this manner PVC pressure pipes improve the mechanical property and become a serious candidate for conveyance of pressurized fluids compared to other plastics pipes. The main advantages about using PVC-O pipes are: resistance to internal pressure, resistance to impact and accidental cuts, hydraulic performance, high flexibility, easy installation, energy efficiency.

The overall aim of the research project “Technology and Application Development for Welding WoodPlastic Composites based on PVC lies in in the analysis of the weldability of commercially available WPC formulations using heated tool butt welding, ultrasonic welding and vibration welding. The objective is to adapt the findings made so far of on current WPC welding processes and parameters in such a way that this new material can be joined using these welding techniques. The main focus of the research is on the optimization of the heated tool butt welding parameters and the determination of the basic weldability of WPC using ultrasonic and vibration welding.

Evaluation and improvement of the economic efficiency of welding PVC window profiles

SYMBIOline Project

The motivation behind this research project was based on the long overdue adjustment of the process parameters in heated tool butt welding to the current PVC formulations and welding machines for window profiles. The expected potential in terms of cycle time reduction could be clearly confirmed and successfully implemented. Each of the considered white profile types allowed a reduction of the cycle time by about 24%, along with increasing the weld strength by an average of 17%. Profiles with outstanding weldability could even be welded up to 40% faster, while the weld quality according to valid quality guidelines would always be ensured. Thanks to the developed welding parameters, the efficiency of a window manufacturing line could be clearly increased and costs could be reduced without having to face quality losses, a higher environmental impact or additional investment costs.

The SYMBIOline range of products is mainly marked out by the association of two materials: lacquered Aluminium outside and extruded PVC inside. The mixed SYMBIOline range endows a better thermal insulation and better phonic, aesthetic and economical performances. By taking advantages of each material, we obtain a complete product which can either be used for new constructions or renovation markets. > William Bosquet > +33 241 961 800 > France

2 LITERS HOUSE: a building system with low environmental impact

Svedaflex PVC compounds with renewable plasticizer made from modified vegetable oils

The “2 liters house project” is an integration of building systems with low environmental impact for the construction of residential buildings.

Svedaflex compounds are plasticized PVC compounds made with a renewable plasticizer based on modified vegetable oil, which can be used to replace phthalate plasticizers. The renewable plasticizer is moderately priced so that it is possible to produce these compounds within the same price range as phthalate-containing PVC-compounds, thereby opening the way to high-volume applications. The new plasticizer has low migration and volatility values. The processing properties of Svedaflex compounds are identical to ‘standard’ PVC-compounds. Properties like hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break etc. are very similar to those obtained with phthalate-containing compounds.

It’s the result of a synergy between the design team, the developer and the construction company. This system performs in an excellent way in terms of energy savings; as far as the management and window insulation are concerned, there are no competitors that can provide the same limited environmental impact. It guarantees a low maintenance and a consistent performance over time. Flexible Innovative film with renewable raw materials

CARDANOL: derived plasticizers for the PVC industry

This thin flexible film AGROVYL® WOOD is PVC based with wood filler. The market aimed at is stationery and graphic arts and more precisely: book cover protection, pockets, and small flexible printed “give away”. This film is not a lab curiosity as we sell it already since 2008. Our clients communicate on the fact that our product is “greener” than a classical thin gage PVC film.

The innovative product is a plasticizer for PVC obtained by chemical modification of cardanol, a very cheap resource with an industrial cost which is half the cost of DOP compared to similar chemical and physical properties. Cardanol and modified cardanol have been proven to be effective plasticizers for rubber. Derivatives of cardanol have also been proved to be efficient plasticizers for PVC. The cardanol molecule can be modified by esterification of the hydroxyl group, to obtain cardanol acetate, which can be used as secondary plasticizer of PVC in conjunction with traditional phthalates plasticizers. Up to 20 phr of cardanol acetate can be added to soft PVC. Cardanol acetate can be obtained in very high yields in a green process, which does not require the use of solvents, and uses very cheap reagents.

This process is based on cyclonic technology, and obtains PVC ready for a second life by separation from the fibres, taking advantage of the difference of densities between the two fractions. > Francesc Riera > +34 93 867 62 36 > Spain

Recycling of end of life advertising banners PVC made

Green products Mehler Texnologies

The Mavinil’s technology allows the recovery of PVC advertising banners, avoiding landfill and obtaining PVC ready for a second life, with no consumption of non renewable raw materials. Due to the visual impact of the banners, their short cycle life and the fact that it’s a product used in a public area, this solution ensures a correct end of life impact, and a suitable recycled raw material for a new application.

The developed technology enables shredded tarpaulin waste to be incorporated into new products without compromising quality. This is a further step toward solving the problem of recycling of polyester and PVC composites. > Ellen Keulen & Christian Callhoff > +49 2433 459 270 > Germany

PVC in water: an idea for outdoor spaces

The products we create use 100% recycled PVC. Our material is supplied by manufacturers of inflatable products, tensile structures and other firms that have a large quantity of PVC waste either in the form of cut-offs or remains from spools. We use all shapes and sizes of waste PVC, from large, shapeless pieces to small scraps. We have invented a method to ensure the durability of this material for outdoor use, one which improves our lifestyles and ensures a florid and colourful atmosphere for our gardens and open-air spaces with minimal maintenance. The idea is a carbon-zero process which is both constructive in social and economical terms. We produce outdoor furnishings, garden flowers, poufs of various sizes, benches, vases suitable for all weather conditions. 13 Ricrea’s project uses a vast quantity of PVC waste, improving our own living spaces which are always fresh and ironic with minimal maintenance! > Ingrid Taro, Cristina Merlo & Angela Mensi > +39 3486 513 333 > Italy 90 – SolVin Award 2010

Vrocker, rocker chair: a rocking chair 100% in PVC

The colored PVC boots are very practical, being waterproof and suitable for garden work or outdoor leisure. They are fashionable to wear in the cities as well. The stylish boot design from PALIÜTIS is becoming a real trend in many European countries.

Vrocker is a small rocking chair made by foaming a PVC compound containing phthalate to enhance its plasticity. The whole product is made of PVC with a combination of 2 different processing techniques. The foamed structure is sprayed up using a technique that is borrowed from the automotive sector. After this, the chair is covered with a thin coat of PVC paint, making it waterproof and easier to clean. The outer skin and the soft quality of the inner material allow the chair to rock without damaging even the most delicate floor surfaces. This chair is made entirely of PVC: this means the material is easier to recycle and to recover.
