Iwas talking with a friend the other day and the topic came up, he was getting ready to attend his 20th year at PRI and I had to think , this year marked my 20th SEMA Show, 21 years in the industry. When I was a 16 year old kid I dreamed of working on trucks for a living It was what I did as a past time and I always told myself “if you like what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Told my Dad that too, of course he didn’t think that was the greatest moto to have at the time I turned wrenches for a decade or so before getting into this media biz . When I put the wrenches down and picked up a laptop and camera, I was sort of getting away from my original dream of working on trucks for a living So I made another promise to myself, to never leave the industry. I thought , I can move around within it , to sales, marketing , manufacturing , or who knows, but I’ll never leave the automotive aftermarket And since

then I’ve dabbled in all those things, I’ve worked for PPE and later Dynomite Diesel, sold parts at both a small truck shop and your corner auto parts store, I worked at a Dodge dealership, I helped produce automotive TV shows, created racing events, and of course, this magazine stuff too It ’s been a really rounded career so far and 21 years later I’m still here, loving it .

Thinking about the early days, and the fads that were in then, many completely disappeared, but many have come full circle. In the beginning I was installing tons of drop in bedliners (you know, the plastic ones you rarely see anymore), tons of Westin Nerf Bars (a product that almost disappeared, taken over by electric retracting running boards), aftermarket hitches were big as many trucks in the early 2000’s never came with them, hard fiberglass tonneaus were huge, billet grilles, c notched

frames, roll pans, ha and bug guards, oh man I installed several of those a day for years So many fads that haven’t died completely, but definitely diminished.

Now for the ones that died and came back

Neon under glow. It ’s not neon tubes anymore, rather LED’s, but the end result is the same

Wheels that stick out past the fender with stretched tires. This was almost exclusive to the import scene, wild to see it ’s become big in what I consider the polar opposite, 1 ton diesels

Air or hydraulic suspension. Can’t really say this one completely died, air suspension especially, it just sorta moved to diesel’s However no one seems to be “hopping” their 9K LB trucks like was done 20 yrs ago, or maybe just not yet?

The more I write this, the more it sounds like the 90’s import scene simply resurrected itself with diesel (in some areas of the country NOT all) Makes perfect sense though Nothing since the days of the Supra has been as tunable as a diesel pick up. If I learned anything from The Fast And The Furious (sarcasm here folks) it ’s that 10 seconds is elite status for fast cars, heck I know a bunch of people with 10 second daily ’d trucks and a few with 7 second rigs.

Twenty one years, I’ve changed, and the game has changed, but it and I, are still the same in so many ways.

It ’s settled At Ultimate Callout Challenge 2023, the most captivating truck challenge in the land will return to a one truck , three event format After allowing more than one truck per team in 2022, which most competitors took advantage of during the sled pull competition, a single vehicle will have to endure the tortures of the drag strip, dyno, and pulls next year A s many know, the rule change for 2022 was met with large swaths of fans both opposed to it and in favor of it . With the old rules back in place and the action once again being held in Indy, make sure you’re there June 2 4.

It ’s been a while since Charlie Fish and the KC Turbos crew unleashed their 6 0L Power Stroke at a racetrack All of that ended over the weekend in a big , big way At Tucson Dragway, and with friend Tony Evans working on making his pro licensing passes, the purple, 4R100 shifted, Warren fueled, KC T4 S480 turbo’d, and Kill Devil Diesel engine’d Super Duty put up a new best of 5 36 at 129 mph in the eighth The truck would also claim the quickest quarter mile ET for a 6.0L Power Stroke, despite being on the brakes, of 8.85 seconds.

GM: Number 1 in Full-Size Pickup Sales In Q3

Since increasing its manufacturing capacity, General Motors’ Chev rolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD s ales have surged. In the third quarter, GM and its dealers were able to translate improved semiconductor (i e chip) supplies, stable production, and increases in dealer inventory into roughly a 3 point improvement in retail market share, year over year. At the s ame time, significant s ales gains were made in the commercial fleet market . Unknown to most , GM sold more full size pickups than Ford in 2020 and 2021 and is on pace to do it again in 2022

This past September, Edge Products hosted their 20th straight year of Weekend on the Edge out of their hometown of Ogden, UT For more than twenty years, Edge has been developing and producing some of the most popular tuning and monitoring products on the market for diesel trucks and every year they host their version of a customer appreciation event at the local fairgrounds to bring together the local diesel crowd for some old fashioned diesel fun. This year, Edge enlisted the help of the crew from the Northwest Dyno Circuit (same dyno and crew that runs Ultimate Callout Challenge) to bring their portable Superflow chassis dyno down for a day also filled with a show and shine contest , vendor alley, food, and comradery amongst friends This event has been one of the ‘go to’ events along the western part of the country and brings in some of the biggest names in the business, where in years past we’ve seen some massive horsepower numbers and even more impressive engine and turbo explosions happen. Who could forget that cover worthy shot from Lyle Richmond of Shawn Baca’s Common Rail engine exploding and thrown 6 feet above the frame rails from a couple years back?

With all the hype and excitement through the years, the 2022 event did not disappoint either after Chris Patterson of Unrivaled Diesel brought his dually Dodge out to play for the day smashing the previous

chassis dyno records and surpassing that 3400 horsepower mark . You read that correctly, the new diesel record occurred mid afternoon when the green beast proved once and for all it was a contender in any arena laying down an astonishing 34701hp/4500ft lbs of torque in front of hundreds in attendance No smoke and mirrors, just solid gut wrenching , frame twisting diesel horsepower through a set of dual tires on the rollers at 4300 ft elevation. It was a sight to see and even more incredibly watch come back down off the dyno without rods hanging out the side of the block or turbo pieces raining from the skies.

Edge paid out over $5000 in prize money for dyno competitors and had really sweet custom plasma cut steel plaques that had been powder coated for the first place winners in each respective class. Show and shine entries were split into Best Ford, Ram, GM and Best of Show with each getting winner getting bragging rights and an Insight CTS3 to take home. Spectators enjoyed near perfect fall weather, with upper 60’s and lower 70’s throughout the day, with just an short ten minute light drizzly rain mixed in somewhere between. Onsite food trucks and food vendors were around throughout the day as well. With over 75 entries on the dyno (limited by time constraints at the fairgrounds) the NWDC rolled through the line of trucks with no major hiccups and sent most owners home extremely happy with their results.

Overall, Weekend on the Edge continues on with it ’s legacy as being one of the best diesel shows of the year, that we continue to look forward to attending into the future. Pro ject My2k continues this month with both functionality and cosmetic upgrades all wrapped in one with the addition of a Move Bumper and extra lighting. In previous parts of this build, we’ve focused on many different aspects of the Super Duty platform and that 7 3L Power Stroke under the hood From the BDS Suspension upgrades to a Bluetop Steering gear to improve the driving feel and stance to adding power through some Edge Products tuning and a higher flowing drop in turbocharger from KC Turbos We made some updates to the fuel system with an FRX kit from Riff Raff diesel, who also has some new and improved exhaust up pipes for the build In just over a year of ownership, we’ve taken this average local classified find used truck and morphed it into a unique and capable daily driver. Using our elbow grease and industry knowledge to hopefully show other truck enthusiasts and readers that it ’s hard to beat what a brand new truck has to offer, there are still plenty of options out there to make an old one better

One of the first players in the computer programming game decades ago, Edge was one of the pioneers in emissions compliant tuning that still added substantial pow notidering today ’s emissions climate. With an extra 133 hp to the rear tires the answer is a resounding “yes,” and with the extra power the Dodge was a completely differ ent truck A big thanks to Brown’s Diesel for letting us verify everything on the dyno, and another big shout out to Edge for making products that will revitalize an old VP44 for 2020 and beyond!

When it comes to the DT466 diesel, though, it fit s Especially when you consider it came from users in the field before International ’s marketing depar tment got hold of it. The DT466 legend crosses into the industrial, agricultural and truck realms, but it was the medium dut y truck world where it made the biggest impac t.

Development of the International Har vester 300 and 400 series engines star ted in 1967 The prime mover for the projec t was the VP of the Construc tion Equipment Division of International Har vester, Bill Wallace, who saw a need for a new line of in house designed and built engines The Construc tion Equipment Division had it ’s own engine sec tion and that put them a lit tle at odds with International ’s main engine plant in Indianapolis Repor tedly, Wallace had an uphill struggle to get money allocated for the program but lobbied hard and eventually succeeded by expanding the idea to cover the other IH divisions, many of which ver y much needed a diesel upgrade

The 300 and 400 lines are inexorably locked together, since they shared the same basic architec ture, many par t s and were built on the same tooling The 300 line was more compac t than the 400’s and shared a common bore of 3.875. It included the D312 (4.410 in stroke) and the D (Diesel, naturally aspirated) and DT (Diesel, Turbo) 360 (5.085 in stroke) diesels The 400 line shared a 4 30 in bore and included the D and DT414 (4.75 in stroke), D and DT436 (5.00 in stroke) and the D and DT466 (5.35 in stroke). the DT360 is a legend in it s own right, we’ll save the details for another time.

Design features of the 300 and 400 series engines included grey iron block s set up for plateau honed wet sleeves of cast iron with a high chrome content Plateau honing was relatively new for 1971 but added a lot to the durabilit y and longevit y, plus ensured a rapid break in. The induc tion hardened, forged steel crank shaf t s were suppor ted by seven main bearings They were direc t injec ted, looking ahead to the ever increasing limit s being placed on smoke and emissions. They were thoroughly modern and built on new tooling in the Melrose Park , Illinois, plant that was the home of the Construc tion Equipment Division When they came on the market, it was an, “in your FACE” moment from International to the diesel engine manufac turing market.

By the time the engines star ted produc tion in 1971, the initial plan was for the 300 line and the 414 and 436 to be used mainly in the ag division, trac tors and combines The 466 was held back mostly for construc tion equipment, though that would soon change Both naturally aspirated and turbo engines were of fered, but Tom Lisak , who star ted as a Test Engineer on the 300/400 program and was later a Projec t Engineer, says the NA engines at trac ted lit tle at tention beyond the trac tor market and ver y few were built.

investment, it became an option for the Fleet star, star ting with Januar y 1975 produc tion Later in the year, it became available in the Cargostar (COE) and Paystar

The DT466 was added to the Loadstar options list in the summer of 1976 as a premium upgrade over the naturally aspirated D150, D170 and D190 9 0L V8 diesels The DT466 was more power ful, economical and reliable than the big V8 diesels and it could be overhauled in chassis.

of in house diesels over the years, like the D301, D358, DV462 and DV550 (later k nown as the 9.0L af ter some updates). Others came from out side, including Perkins, Cat, Cummins and Detroit Diesel engines The idea of of fering a premium wet sleeved turbo diesel in a medium dut y line that could be overhauled in chassis like a heav y dut y truck was a new one and IH hit paydir t with it The DT466 soon became the engine to beat in the medium dut y arena

Going back to trac tors, the 414 and 436 found immediate homes in the International trac tor lines The D414 debuted in the 1971 966 trac tor The DT414 debuted in the 1066, while the DT436 appeared in the 1466 and the 4166 four wheel drive. The DT466 first appeared in the 1973 4366 four wheel drive trac tor, a co development of IH and Steiger All three of these engines had a histor y of stellar ser vice in the IH trac tor lines, even a lit tle past when the ag side of IH was sold of f and became Case IH International Har vester was broken up into it ’s component par t s,

with the truck and engine sec tions becoming Navistar International.

The DT466 had a large number of upgrades before it evolved completely away from mechanical injec tion in 1997. There were so many designations and power ratings that we’d need half the magazine to cover them all, so we’ll stick to the most common The original DT466 iteration was built in 1977 and had a A MBAC Model 100 rotar y pump. The t wo common ratings were 185 and 210 hp in truck s When the DT466B appeared in 1977, the earlier engine became the DT466A by default.

The DT466B emerged with some internal changes One of them was a revised ring pack to reduce oil consumption using average qualit y oils. The compression ratio was bumped from 15.5:1 to 16.3:1 in the process, which was useful in cold star t s for truck applications Wider main and rod bearings were also added Emissions controls entered the fray and the DTI466B (the “I” for intercooled) emissions cer tified engines for California 466B used an air to water intercooler The DT466B and DTI466B still used the A MBAC 100 pump and the number of ratings expanded to span 160 210 hp.

In 1982, the DT466C was introduced There were numerous small internal updates including larger diameter lif ters and a higher flow lubrication system. The injec tion pump changed to a Bosch MW inline and both turbo and turbo intercooled engines were of fered Two intercooled engines

were of fered in this line, the new air to air (DTA466C) and the precious DTI466C air to water system

The original DT466 family under went a major transformation for 1993 af ter several years of development DT466PLN (NGD) was a major redo of the line “NGD” stood for New Generation Diesel. The “PLN” in the designation stood for “Pump Line Noz zle,” which is a fanc y, more technically correc t name for a mechanically injec ted engine Why the need to designate that? A new elec tro hydraulic fuel injec tion system was about to debut.

The NGD PLN engines had a high mounted pump and a cast, squared of f valve cover with notches for the injec tors. They used either a Bosch P3000 or P7100 inline injec tion pump In this era, 1994 specifically, the DT466 mechanically injec ted family would see the highest rated output of 275 hp and 800 lbs f t. The NGD update was accompanied by a smaller DT408 variant (4 301x4 680 inch bore and stroke) that replaced the DT360 and a larger I530 version (530ci, 4.59x5.35 inch bore and stroke) was added. All three engines were almost indistinguishable visually from each other. The new engines were mechanical initially but were mostly phased out by 1995 There

were small numbers of PLN engines as late as 1997 What replaced them?

Emissions standards hit the diesel industr y ver y hard in the late ‘90s. Navistar International had earlier joined forces with Cat to develop HEUI Hydraulic Elec tric Unit Injec tors made most famous in the Navistar/Ford Power Strokes. A s a result, in May of 1995, the DT466E was introduced, complete with a new head and HEUI, plus all the applicable NGD evolutions In 2004, the G2 “Generation 2” injec tion system debuted, which was an improved and updated HEUI system. These morphed into the Max x Force engines in 2006, but we aren’t going that far in this stor y

The 300 and 400 Series, the DT466 in par ticular were solid engines. When introduced, they weren’t so far ahead of the technology cur ve to be glitchy but they were leaps ahead of the many legac y, old school diesels still on the market. A s a result, they star ted earning street cred immediately. More than any thing, it was timing The DT466 was the right engine at the right time That it was so long lived, adaptable and upgradable gave it serious legs in the market and that ’s why it ’s descendant s are still in produc tion and so many DT466s are still earning their keep today
