Off-road supercars are now a thing Does their existence mean we’re approaching the end times, or will the term “crossover ” come to represent the coolest combinations of vehicle types that off-kilter engineers can think of ? Don’t look now, but we think it’s the latter

In fact, this month’s cover features what may be the first ever crossover: the all-new Lamborghini Sterrato (page 12). Par t Huracán and part WRC rally car, the Sterrato literally elevates Lamborghini’s supercar game by 1 7 inches It also features off-road tires, a Rally driving mode for low-trip surfaces, and a V12 engine making 602 horsepower. Speaking of paint, there is perhaps no color more recognizable in all of autodom than Ferrari’s Rosso Corsa (page 32) Reser ved exclusively for cars from Italy and used primarily by Ferrari and Abar th, its name literally means “Racing Red ” Though not the only shade of crimson that can be found on Ferraris over the years, Rosso Corsa is cer tainly the most iconic.

Up top and on the rear hood is an air intake system that not only adds to the aggressive appearance but also aids in the engine’s search for clean air.

Speaking of the engine, this offroad Lamborghini’s powerplant is none other than the automaker ’s well-known 5 2-liter V10 engine Supplying 602 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, this engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission Also hooked up to the engine is an all-wheel-drive system and rear mechanical self-locking d i f fe re nt i a l . L a m b o r gh i n i n o te s that this powertrain will launch the Huracán Sterrato from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and to a top speed of 160 mph

Managing the engine is a version o f t h e L a m b o r g h i n i I n t e g r a t e d Vehicle Dynamics (LDVI) system that’s been updated speciﬁcally for the Sterrato’s off-road nature The STRADA and SPORT modes of the LDVI system have been recalibrated for this model, and a new RALLY

mode has been added. This mode allows the Lamborghini to excel in low-grip conditions, just like a rally car should.

Drawing inspiration from the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally and the ﬁrst 911 ever to count on an all-wheel-drive system, the 2023 Porsche 911 Dakar aims to allow its owners to explore more than just race tracks and twisty roads

The factory-built off-roading sports car counts on the same twin-turbocharged 3 0-liter ﬂat-six engine found in the 911 GTS It develops 473 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, which goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed PDK It’ll rocket to 60 mph in 3 2 seconds and continue on to a top speed of 150 mph, which is limited thanks to all-terrain tires. The Dakar also gets rear-axle steering, engine mounts out of the 911 GT3, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control

Its most signiﬁcant changes live in the suspension The Porshe 911 Dakar is 50 millimeters taller than a base Carrera. However, a standard lift system can raise the car by an additional 30 millimeters when needed to achieve a ride height and ramp-over angles similar to that of an SUV Its tallest mode is only available up to 105 mph, at which point it will return to its standard ride height.

Pirelli developed a new Scorpion All Terrain Plus tire for the Dakar, measuring 245/45 ZR 19 in the front and 295/40 ZR 20 in the rear These feature reinforced sidewalls and a tread pattern that is 9 millimeters deep. Summer tires are also available, but the all-terrain set is standard

To make use of its new equipment, the Dakar employs two new drive modes, Rallye and Off-Road. A new Rallye Launch Control system is available within those two drive modes and allows up to 20 percent wheel spin

An optional Rallye Design Package gives the 911 Dakar a twotone White and Gentian Blue Metallic exterior, which pays tribute to the 1984 Dakar-winning car. The Shade Green of the stitching is also available as an exterior color exclusive to the Dakar

Porsche plans to build just 2,500 units of its high-riding sports car, each with a starting price of $222,000 plus a $1,450 delivery fee The ﬁrst customer cars will reach dealerships in spring 2023

If you think about a red car, you likely picture a Ferrari, and if you think about a Ferrari, you likely picture a red car. The Italian marque has become synonymous with the color red over decades, and the hue has been central to its history for just as long even before Ferrari was a company. The story of Rosso Corsa, Ferrari’s legendary red, started over a century ago, when Italy ’s official motorsport color was formally deemed red after the 1907 Italian Peking to Paris–winning car ﬂaunted red paintwork From then on, Italian racing adopted red as its official color, in the same way that France has used blue and Britain green

Ferrari’s time under the Alfa Romeo umbrella saw the creation of a great many red racing cars, and when Ferrari ﬁnally emerged a s i t s ow n brand w i t h t he rele a s e of t he 1 2 5 S, Ro s s o Cors a remained the most readily visible color in its portfolio Eventually, other automakers found other colors to use in motorsport and to represent their brands; but because Ferrari’s roots run deep in Italian motorsport , the Prancing Horse elected to continue showing its true colors and carry on the heritage of Rosso Corsa Along w ith it , Ferrari became synonymous w ith the histor y and glory of Italian racing and the performance and style of the country’s best cars

Today, Rosso Corsa (Italian for “racing red”) remains Ferrari’s most popular red, although other shades like Rosso Dino, Rosso Fiorano, and Rosso Scuderia are available. The entire palette of reds echoes the legacy of Rosso Corsa and tells the story of how the company’s red cars captured the hearts of the entire automotive world to make everlasting history. By the early 1990s, Ferrari says that 85 percent of cars built were ﬁnished in red, and while that ’s changed with things like Ferrari’s Tailor Made program

As soon as it became available, I made a beeline for the 2023 BMW M4 CSL The CSL suffix, which stands for Coupe, Sport, and Lightweight, indicates that this is the lightest and most athletic M4 yet With a production run of only 1,000 units worldwide, it is the rarest CSL the brand has ever produced and likely a car I’ll never see in the ﬂesh again
