SUBARU ADDS TURBO TO 2023 OUTBACK
Subaru Australia has announced the 2023 Outback range will be enhanced with the arrival of a turbocharged engine option, bringing more power and torque, while the rest of the MY23 lineup will receive updates in the areas of tech and driver convenience.
The arrival of a turbocharged engine comes in response to customer demand and plugs a gap in the Outback range previously filled by the six-cylinder 3.6R that was discontinued in 2020.
“We have heard our customer’s request for a turbocharged Outback loud and clear,
so we are extremely pleased to add two all-new, turbocharged Subaru Outback variants to the MY23 Subaru Outback line-up,” said Subaru Australia’s Managing Director, Blair Read.
“A more powerful turbocharged engine, coupled with the latest intuitive technology, impressive interior and of course the allterrain capability of Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD, makes the Outback XT the perfect vehicle for any Australian road trip.”
OUTBACK XT
While significantly smaller in terms of capacity compared to the previously available 3.6-litre Boxer six, the new
2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer four-cylinder petrol engine produces equivalent power and identical torque – 183kW and 350Nm.
These numbers are also well above the 138kW and 245Nm maximums offered by the naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre Boxer petrol four that carries over unchanged for the 2023 Outback range.
The turbo trumps the naturally-aspirated engine in terms of acceleration, too, and while no specific times are quoted, Subaru says the turbo reaches 100km/h from standstill 22 per cent quicker.
The turbo option - identifiable by an ‘XT’ badge and offered on both Sport and Touring trim levels - will also deliver
2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer four to be new Outback range leader, deliveries from December.
improved towing capacity, up from 2,000kg to 2,400kg braked. Modifying the rear diff ratio and introducing more efficient brake pad material helps achieve this, with a secondary benefit of the latter being improved parking brake performance.
The CVT transmission and Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system are unchanged for the turbo Outback XT, but suspension tuning has been recalibrated to suit the new powerplant and support the towing capacity increase. Subaru says the suspension delivers both driving stability and ride comfort.
Other standard features, familiar from the current Outback range, include SI-Drive and X-Mode selectable driving options, Subaru’s Vision Assist and Eyesight Assist suite of safety technologies, a driver monitoring system, comprehensive SRS airbag set, a hands-free power tailgate, auto stop-start function, power folding door mirrors, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and an 11.6-inch central touchscreen.
Beyond the badging, identifying features on the Outback XT include dual tailpipes and six LEDs in the front foglamps, said to be inspired by the six stars in the Subaru logo.
Six paint options will be offered on the Outback Sport XT, with a further three available on the Outback Touring XT. The Touring XT also gets auto exterior mirror adjustment and auto driver seat adjustment that the Sport XT doesn’t.
RANGE IMPROVEMENTS
For the rest of the 2023 Outback range, which covers base, Sport and Touring variants with the 2.5 engine, there are newlook 18-inch alloy wheels, with additional and enhanced features applied, too.
New convenience features include the aforementioned wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while the 11.6-inch infotainment screen has been redesigned to make it more user-friendly, with new shortcut buttons, updated climate control operation and full-screen Android Auto.
A USB-C terminal has been added to the front aux input station (one USB-A port remains) and has a higher current output for faster device charging, while the steering wheel buttons have been redesigned.
Voice command recognition capability has been increased to include auto start-stop, cruise control, seat heater and ventilation settings, lane departure warning and navigation ‘search for closest location’ function. In line with the latter, a modification of the existing navigation system allows address/point of interest searches to be performed with a single input.
CHRISTMAS GIFT
Subaru Australia are expecting the first units of the 2023 Outback range to reach Australia in December, with dealers taking orders now.
With the additional and improved tech, pricing for the 2.5 Outback lineup has
increased by $1,200, while the new 2.4 turbo Outback will top the range in terms of pricing, starting at $52,190, pus ORCs.
All MY23 Outback variants are backed by Subaru Australia’s five-year/unlimited km warranty, with 12 months complimentary roadside assist.

SUBARU ALL-WHEEL DRIVE TURNS 50
This September saw Subaru Corporation reach a significant milestone in the company’s history – 50 years since the debut of the All-Wheel Drive system that has become synonymous with the brand.
The first Subaru with AWD was the Leone 4WD wagon, which was also the first mass-produced AWD passenger car to come out of Japan.
Since then, Subaru has built more than 21 million AWD vehicles, with AWD models currently accounting for 98 per cent of the company’s sales globally.
The ‘Symmetrical AWD’ tag applied to current Subarus refers to the layout of the driveline with the Boxer engine that has become equally synonymous with the brand. The combination of the low centre of gravity provided by the Boxer engine and the superior weight balance of the symmetrical drivetrain maximises stability and traction, offering what Subaru says is superb driving performance in a variety of weather and road conditions.
Since that first AWD model was released 50 years ago, Subaru has been continuously honing its AWD capability under the philosophy of “human-oriented car making”.
More recently, Subaru’s AWD technology has been applied to electrified vehicles, with “e-BOXER”-equipped hybrid models allowing more precise control of the all-wheel drive system, while the upcoming fully-electric Solterra SUV will also incorporate expertise gained from the company’s decades in all-wheel drive research and development.

NEW AGE CARAVANS RECEIVE FULL ADR APPROVAL
worth of experience working to these standards in the automotive industry, with brands like Holden, Chevrolet and Volkswagen.
Whilst Vehicle Type Approval is not yet compulsory for caravans sold in Australia, New Age Caravans considered it essential for their range, ensuring a higher standard of safety and quality than their competitors.
New Age Caravans Managing Director, Chris Polites, is delighted that the company’s diligence and commitment has been recognised by the Australian Government.
“To have Vehicle Type Approvals for our entire range is something we are all extremely proud of. It speaks to the quality and safety of the process we undertake, from design to manufacturing, and the commitment from all our staff.
New Age Caravans and Walkinshaw Group have achieved Vehicle Type Approval for their entire 2022 caravan range, ahead of the introduction of the Road Vehicle Standards Act (RVSA) that will apply to the entire caravan industry from 2023.
The Australian Design Rules (ADRs), which the Vehicle Type Approvals are associated with, are national design rules
that mandate minimum safety standards, dimensional requirements, structural requirements, performance and emission targets for all vehicles registered to travel on Australian roads.
Vehicle Type Approval is a relatively new requirement for the caravan industry, but Walkinshaw Group (who purchased New Age Caravans in 2016) has over 30 years’
VALE LES SIVIOUR
“While ADRs are not yet formally mandated, it’s something we believe is essential, and that’s why we’ve gone above and beyond what is required. We want all New Age owners to know that their caravan has met the national standards for wherever their journey takes them.
“We categorically believe Vehicle Type Approvals should be mandatory across the entire RV and leisure industry, to ensure all caravans on the road are safe.
“Anyone who is in the market for a caravan should ensure it has Vehicle Type Approval, for their own safety and peace of mind.”
Championships (including winning the AORC outright in 1987), Siviour also raced in the gruelling Mobil 1 Round Australia trial and the Finke Desert Race, where he was one of the most successful drivers before lightweight buggies began to dominate the car division.
Siviour’s success in the Patrol saw him become Nissan’s go-to guy for press launches and VIP events, even after he retied from racing in 2003. Legend Les did pull out the racing suit for the occasional event post-retirement, including one in 2010 where his daughter Katie was alongside as navigator. He has also supported grandson Jesse in the sport.
A service honouring the life of Les Siviour was held in Griffith on 19 September. JUST 4x4s extends its sympathies to Siviour’s wife Jan, children Bobbie and Katie, grandchildren, extended family and friends.
The Australian off-road racing community is mourning the loss of Les Siviour, who passed away on 8 September after battling cancer.
One of the nation’s best and most successful off-road racers, ‘Legend Les’ Siviour won 17 Australian Championships, mostly behind the wheel of a Nissan Patrol; a connection that saw him named as a ‘Patrol Legend’ by Nissan earlier this year.
When Nissan won the unmodified division of the AORC for 16 consecutive years from 1983 to 1998, it was Siviour behind the wheel for all bar one of those victories.
Born and raised in Griffith, NSW, Siviour got into off-road racing by accident. When organisers of an AORC round invited fans to drive a lap of the circuit, Siviour, who was in attendance as a spectator, thought he’d give it a crack. In his wife Jan’s SWB Patrol and with a few mates on board, Siviour set a lap time that would have put him alongside the pro drivers.
He entered the next AORC round as a competitor - in the same Patrol - and won at the following round, starting a chain of success that would last more than a decade.

Skoda are looking ahead to the future, with a new focus on electric mobility as part of the ‘Next Level – Skoda Strategy 2030’ that will also bring a new design language, new logo and a comprehensively updated corporate identity.
The focus on electric mobility –e-mobility in Skoda speak - will see 5.6 Billion Euro invested in this area over the next five years and new all-electric models released. At least one of those upcoming models will lean heavily on the ‘Vision 7S’ concept shown here.
“The Vision 7S is the forerunner of our new design language that we’ll be rolling out across the entire product portfolio over the coming years,” said Martin Jahn, Skoda Auto Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “With the new styling, we are taking the brand to the next level and aligning it to our customers’ new needs and expectations, particularly regarding
user experience, connectivity and the entire customer journey.”
Few details are provided on the drivetrain for the Vision 7S, but Skoda says the concept has an 89kWh battery that will deliver range of more than 600km (WLTP cycle), with fast charging at 200kW.
NEW LOOK
According to Skoda, the new design language in the Vision 7S combines robustness, functionality and authenticity. The traditional Skoda logo does not feature anywhere, while in a more subtle difference from past models, the Vision 7S is the first Skoda finished in matte paint.
Starting at the front end, the Vision 7S has a ‘Tech-Deck Face’ that is flatter and wider than the front end of current Skoda models. With no need for a conventional grille in an EV, this space is now covered by a smoked glass panel that conceals the concept’s sensors.
Above this, ‘SKODA’ lettering features on the bonnet’s leading edge, while an ambient light strip runs across the full width of the front end.
Headlights and DRLs are moved further outwards and sit one above the other, forming a ‘T’, with the DRLs as the horizontal element and the headlights as the vertical element. The tail lights are
configured in the same way, with the ‘T’ treatment also reflected in the arrangement of the exterior mirrors and door handles.
In the lower bumper, large vertical vents direct air to the vehicle’s cooling system and brakes. The seven-slot opening, which may have Jeep calling in their corporate lawyers for IP violations, is repeated on the rear bumper.
At each end, the bright ‘Flashy Orange’ centre opening in this seven-slot arrangement not only provides a contrast to the Explorer Green matte paint, but houses a tow hook and can also be used to disengage the vehicle’s high-voltage current in case of an emergency.
Skoda’s ‘Vision 7S’ concept previews not only a new look for Skoda SUVs, but also a new brand identity.Another point to note with the bumpers is that they are made from recycled tyres, as are the wheelarch linings. The wheels are 22-inch size and of an aerodynamically optimised design.
On the flanks, what Skoda calls a ‘tornado line’ separates the body panels from the glass area, with the doors of a pillarless style, front-hinged at the front and rearhinged at the rear to create a vast entry to the interior.
Below the doors, running boards to facilitate vehicle entry feature additional air vents that push warm air generated by the EV powertrain to the outside.
The concept’s roofline, while sloping gently to the rear, is flatter than current Skoda models and terminates at a large spoiler that’s driven by the same aerodynamic requirements as the wheel design.
As with the front end, the Skoda logo has been replaced with ‘SKODA’ wording at the rear that is illuminated. Skoda wording also features on the D pillar.
MINIMALIST INTERIOR
The Vision 7S offers seating for seven, in a spacious 2-2-3 arrangement with sportylooking bucket seats on the first two rows.
There’s enough space between the firstand second-row seats to allow a rear-facing child seat to be mounted on the concept’s long central tunnel. This placing is said

to be the safest part of the vehicle in the event of a collision, while an optional interior camera allows the child to still be monitored when only the front-row seats are occupied.
The same ecological concerns that drove the selection of materials for the exterior also feature inside. Recycled tyres
have been used for the flooring, while leather seat trim has been replaced with sustainable fabrics, including 100 per cent recyclable polyester.
On the doorcards, “interactive” fabric surfaces allow them to be drawn on with a finger, to leave short notes or for children to create drawings.
Two distinctive interior configurations for the Vision 7S – Driving and Relaxing – are defined by positioning of the seats, controls and central touchscreen. When in Drive mode, these elements are in their conventional positions with a verticallyoriented screen, but when in Relax mode, the unique, oval-shaped steering wheel and instrument cluster slide away from the driver to create additional space, while the central screen rotates to a horizontal position to optimally display entertainment content.
In Relax mode, the front-row seats rotate inwards and recline for extra comfort, while also allowing the rear passengers to view the screen. Second-row seats also recline in Relax mode, so all passengers can enjoy a more comfortable seating position and better view of the screen.
NEW HMI
The human-machine interface is said to have been completely re-invented for the Vision 7S, with a mix of haptic and virtual controls to simplify the user experience.
Greater power delivery for normalised fuel consumption relative to 5W-40 baseline, demonstrated by engine testing or more than 80% of Castrol EDGE 2021 volume.
When in Drive mode, an 8.8-inch digital instrument screen is augmented with a head-up display, while the steering wheel’s oval shape makes the screen easier to see.
The 14.6-inch central touchscreen is the largest ever fitted to a Skoda, with content split across the display area and fully configurable.
Below this, six buttons allow direct access to infotainment, phone, app menus, vehicle settings and navigation controls, with the sixth button user configurable.
A trio of large rotary dials control the in-cabin comfort and scrolling through touchscreen content, with large buttons under these for selecting the Drive/Relax mode, door locking/unlocking and a scroll wheel for adjusting music/content volume.
Smartphones are designed to be an integral part of Vison 7S infotainment
operation, with dedicated spots on the centre console to allow two units to be mounted for use as trackpads. These are held in place by magnets, with magnets also used on the front seatbacks to allow tablets and similar devices to be mounted.
More magnets in the centre console allow placement of model-specific drink bottles and a first aid kit, while the front seatbacks incorporate bespoke backpacks.
The colour palette of the interior picks up on the exterior, with a light green for the seats and middle section of the dash and door cards, complemented by darker tones for the upper doorcards and seat inserts, with Flashy Orange accents on areas like the seatbelts.
Finally, a large crystal indicates battery status through different colours, with its positioning in the centre of the dash,
ahead of the touchscreen, designed to make it viewable from inside and outside of the vehicle.
COMING IN 2026
The first production model under Skoda’s new design language is due for release in 2026, but how much of what’s seen in the Vision 7S concept will be incorporated is still to be determined at time of writing.
“With the Vision 7S concept study, we’re giving a specific preview of an entirely new Skoda model that will round off the top end of our product portfolio and customer base,” said Skoda Auto CEO, Klaus Zellmer.
“We’re significantly accelerating our e-campaign and will be launching three additional all-electric models by 2026, with more in the pipeline.”
Front-end styling elements are repeated at the rear, and while few details on drivetrain were provided, range is said to be 600km.

This September, Nissan celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first motorised crossing of the vast Simpson Desert; a legendary feat achieved by the Sprigg family in a stock standard G60 Nissan Patrol.
Doug Sprigg is now approaching 70, but back in ’62, he was just seven years old when he, his older sister Margaret, and parents Reg and Griselda all squeezed into the front seat of a Nissan Patrol and set off from Andado Station in the Northern Territory for what would prove to be an epic and history-making journey across the Simpson Desert.
Reg Sprigg was an experienced geologist and the trek wasn’t a holiday for he and his family; rather an exploratory mission for his geological survey company, searching for
oil and gas reserves that may lay under the dunes of the Simpson.
AUSSIE FIRST
Taking eleven days from start to finish, the Sprigg’s family adventure would eventually end at Birdsville in Queensland on 11 September, 1962. It wasn’t something they were aiming to achieve at the time, but that crossing earned the family — and the G60 Nissan Patrol — a place in Australian history for the first ever motorised crossing of the Simpson.
To mark six decades since the first motorised crossing of the Simpson Desert, Nissan reunited an Aussie legend with an old friend.WORDS Mike Ryan and Nissan Australia | PHOTOS Nissan Australia
The size and scale of the Sprigg’s endeavour can’t be overstated. The Simpson Desert is the largest parallel sand dune desert in the world, stretching more than 170,000 square kilometres and touching Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
With no real tracks or maps to follow, the family averaged just 5km/h on their journey.
The dunes were challenging enough, but the crops of saltbush that dot the Simpson Desert presented a double hazard. In addition to being an obstacle, the searing heat of the desert meant they were a real fire danger every time the G60 got momentarily beached on a sand dune. And with a 200-litre drum of petrol included in the Patrol’s cargo, fire risks were a scary thing.
A NARROW VIEW
An eleven-day trek across the Simpson meant there was plenty of breathtaking scenery to take in each day, even though young Doug saw it from an unusual perspective.
“With four of us sitting across the front seat, a 200-litre drum of fuel in the back and a 200-litre drum of water, the vehicle was pretty heavily loaded,” Doug recalled.
“I was even shorter then than I am now, but the Nissan had provided me a way of seeing forward — the air vents below the windscreen - so I got to see the scenery through the air vents, but the big sand dunes coming up I could see through the windshield.”
While Doug and Margaret were along for the ride, dad Reg did the driving and mum Griselda handled the cooking and logistics, ensuring the family was well supplied and ready for anything.
By day, the family would track across the desert in their trusty Patrol, and by night they would camp beneath the stars.
“Mum was the one that did a lot of the preparations. They were an amazing team. Without mum, dad wouldn’t have been anywhere near as successful,” Doug added.
“And the vehicle was magnificent. Every other vehicle had significant problems, with gearboxes in particular, or with differentials, but the Nissan never had any issues. And it was punished — Dad believed that vehicles had to work for their living.
“I have such fond memories of that G60. It was such a robust and reliable vehicle.”
A LOVE OF THE OUTBACK
Doug is now the second-generation owner of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary — a 144,000-acre former sheep station located deep in South Australia’s red-dirt outback.
Reg Sprigg first came across the property decades before the family’s history-making crossing of the Simpson and would eventually buy it.
“Dad used his 4WDs to go and explore different parts of the country and one of the places he came to in 1937, as a geology student, was Arkaroola. He fell in love with it, and later went to the state government and tried to convince them to buy it as a National Park,” Doug said.
“Parks wasn’t interested, so eventually he bought it himself in 1968, and it’s been about the same ever since.
“There is nowhere quite like this and it has an amazing diversity of geology, animals and plants in these arid lands.”
As a wildlife sanctuary, Arkaroola has been regularly visited by students studying botany, geology and paleontology, with a special research and education foundation set up to support this. The massive property also welcomes hundreds of tourists annually who want to explore the diverse scenery within the property that sits at the northern end of the stunning Flinders Ranges.
CELEBRATING 60
Back in 2012, Nissan marked the 50th Anniversary of the Sprigg family’s Simpson Desert crossing with a recreation drive that saw Doug and Margaret take part amongst other Patrol owners and enthusiasts.
This year, Nissan caught up with Doug — a verified Patrol Legend — at Arkaroola and brought along a restored G60 Patrol to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of that momentous crossing. It was a reunion of man and machine that unlocked plenty of powerful memories.
“Driving this vehicle now, 60 years later, it’s just incredible,” Doug said.
“Dad was amazing in his diversity of knowledge, and I didn’t realise just how much I relied on him until he died. Suddenly, this amazing resource was gone.
“But jumping in this Nissan brings those memories back, it’s been amazing.”
For their third instalment of the ‘Patrol Legends’ series celebrating Nissan Patrol owners and icons from all over Australia, Nissan chose a man who you could say attained legend status 60 years ago when he was just a boy and took part in an epic road trip through the Red Centre. A love of the outback ignited on that trip is used today to educate others on Australia’s amazing flora, fauna and scenery.
In the north-eastern reaches of South Australia, eight hours’ drive from Adelaide, and at least four hours from anything that could be described as a bustling town, lies the wilderness sanctuary of Arkaroola. Even by Australian standards, this 610-squarekilometre former sheep station is remote, but that’s exactly how Arkaroola’s current custodian, Doug Sprigg, likes it.
Doug says he couldn’t see himself living anywhere else, which is a good thing,
because the Sprigg family have been on this unique site since Doug’s father, Reg, acquired it from the South Australian government more than 50 years ago.
“There is nowhere quite like this,” Doug says. “Arkaroola is a 144,000-acre property, and it has an amazing diversity of geology, animals and plants in these arid lands.”
If you’re wondering how owning an outback property entitles you to Patrol Legend status, it doesn’t. Doug’s induction has nothing to do with Arkaroola at all, actually, but is connected to this part of Australia and comes via something that he did as a passenger – literally.
A LONG ROAD TRIP
Doug’s father, Reg Sprigg, was a geologist who co-founded the now well-known company Santos Ltd in 1954 to find oil, natural gas and other resources in remote parts of Australia. He later launched his own company, Geosurveys of Australia P/L.
An experienced geologist, Reg had led expeditions that discovered not only mineral resources, but natural wonders, too, including submarine canyons off the coast of Kangaroo Island and fossils in SA’s north that date back hundreds of millions of years.
In September of 1962, Reg decided to take his wife, Griselda, and children, 9-year-old Margaret and 7-year-old Doug, on one of his surveying expeditions for Geosurveys of Australia P/L in South Australia’s far north,
travelling from west to east in search of oil and gas reserves that might be hidden beneath the seemingly endless sand dunes of the Simpson Desert.
To tackle a route that had no roads, only endless scrub and sand dunes, Reg’s vehicle of choice was a G60 Nissan Patrol, which happened to be one of the first units to arrive in Australia, as it had only been introduced here in 1961, following the earliest Toyota LandCrusiers that had been introduced only a few years earlier.
With the rear of the Patrol loaded with two large drums (one for petrol, the other for water), camping gear, food and all the other provisions required for the trip, the Sprigg family were forced to fill the front bench seat.
Setting off from Andado Station, near Mt. Daer in the Northern Territory, the family emerged from the sand dunes at Birdsville in Queensland eleven days later; a monumental feat in itself and one that also happened to be the first ever motorised crossing of the Simpson Desert.
“There were other vehicles out there at that time, taking different routes, like the French Line. But the Nissan was the only one that made it across to the other side without any issues.” Doug explained.
The young Doug had his view of the Simpson somewhat compromised, though, as he was too small to see over the windscreen, but did get a view through the G60’s front fascia air vents!
“I have such fond memories of that G60 - it was such robust and reliable vehicle,” Doug added.
“The modern ones are just brilliant, too. They’re just as robust, but a whole lot more comfortable. We have an in-house mechanic here at Arkaroola, and we often joke he’d starve if there were only Nissans to work on — because nothing ever goes wrong.”
A LOVE OF THE OUTBACK
That cross-desert adventure ignited a love of Australia’s Red Centre that still burns in Doug today and fuels his passion for Arkaroola.
After acquiring the site in 1968, the Sprigg family moved to Arkaroola and had the property gazetted as a wildlife sanctuary and historic reserve. Since then, the Arkaroola Education and Research Foundation has been supporting students pursuing careers in botany, geology and paleontology.
Arkaroola also welcomes tourists who come in droves to explore the deep gorges and towering mountains that cover much of the property, part of the stunning Flinders Ranges that stretches for 430km and includes the famous Wilpena Pound.
Some hardy folk explore the region by foot, others in a 4x4, but a unique perspective on Arkaroola is delivered by air in one of the sanctuary’s planes, often piloted by Doug himself.
Beyond its amazing and diverse landscape, Arkaroola is also home to an abundance of wildlife, including the rare yellow-footed rock wallaby, the metre-long Stimson’s Python and the mighty wedge-tail eagle.
Its status as a wildlife sanctuary ensures Arkaroola will remain untouched and available for all to explore for years to come. We can thank the commitment of the Sprigg family for that; a commitment that Patrol Legend Doug isn’t planning on giving up any time soon.
If you’re travelling to this part of Australia, set aside some time to visit Arkaroola. Turn up in a Patrol and you’re sure to get an extra warm welcome!
Since it was introduced in 2002, the Cayenne has been a mainstay of Porsche’s global success in the new millennium.
And while the addition of an SUV to the portfolio of the famous German sports car manufacturer may seem like a no-brainer today, it was far from obvious 20 years ago.
In the mid-1990s, Porsche had to make some big decisions in order to secure its long-term success. The company found itself in one of the most significant economic crises in its history: it was in the red and had delivered only 23,060 cars in the 1991/92 financial year.
Launching the Boxster in 1996 saw Porsche begin to manoeuvre out of its slump but it quickly became clear that the legendary 911 sports car and the new, mid-engined Boxster would not be able to put the company back into the black on their own.
Plans for a ‘third Porsche’ began to take
shape in the mid-90s, but several years earlier, Ferry Porsche (son of company founder Ferdinand Porsche) had predicted which route the company would ultimately take in expanding their range.
“If we build an off-road model according to our standards of quality, and it has a Porsche crest on the front, people will buy it,” Ferry said upon his retirement from the company in 1989.
As prescient as Ferry’s opinion was, it wasn’t one that was widespread within Porsche at the time. This reflected a general resistance amongst prestige and performance automotive brands to go

down the route of an SUV, as they felt such a vehicle wasn’t in tune with their image.
As much as the boom in the SUV market during the 1990s couldn’t be ignored, it wasn’t the only segment experiencing growth at the time, with people movers also popular. Had Porsche selected another path, the Cayenne could have been a model in the vein of a Toyota Tarago or Honda Odyssey. This was seriously considered for Porsche’s third model.
However, on the recommendation of their sales organisation in the US (their largest market at the time), Porsche decided to go with an off-road vehicle.
The goals were ambitious right from the start - Porsche was not content to merely build a sporty SUV. They aimed to give established competitors in the off-road segment a run for their money, too.
Following the long-running 911 and Boxster, the Cayenne became the third Porsche model, introduced in 2002.
PROJECT ‘COLORADO’
If you discount the short-lived Type 597 that was produced in the 1950s, Porsche had no experience in off-roaders when the commitment to build one was finally made. They had limited resources, too, so a joint venture with Volkswagen was initiated that would see development and costs shared.
Officially announced in June, 1998, ‘Project Colorado’ would see Porsche and VW develop a common platform, to which each brand would apply their own drivetrains, suspension set-ups and styling, ultimately resulting in the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg.
Effectively translating the Porsche style to the specific platform requirements of an SUV was one of the challenges in bringing the Cayenne to fruition.
One of the initial goals with the Cayenne was to make it as capable off-road as other established four-wheel drives, so a low range transfer case and locking centre diff were standard in the first-generation models.
Porsche would be responsible for developing the off-roader’s platform at its top-secret site in Hemmingen, while Volkswagen contributed its expertise in large volume manufacturing.
Exactly where the Touareg/Cayenne would be manufactured was a matter of some conjecture, with VW choosing their factory in Bratislava, Slovakia, while Porsche decided to keep production within Germany, constructing a new facility in Leipzig, which was officially opened in 2002; the same year the Cayenne made its public debut.
Although Cayennes would be assembled at Leipzig, the bodies were constructed and painted at Bratislava first. This arrangement stayed in place for the first two Cayenne generations - known internally as E1 and E2 – but with the launch of the third generation (E3) in 2017, all production
moved to Bratislava. This allowed space at Leipzig for construction of both the Panamera sports sedan and Macan compact SUV.
THREE-WAY VERSATILITY
Upon its launch, Porsche described the Cayenne as a family-friendly touring vehicle that’s also a robust off-roader and highly dynamic sports car. With this trio of characteristics, the Cayenne has done much to shape the upper end of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, arguably paving the way for many high-performance and premium SUVs that have followed.
On its debut in 2002, the Cayenne was
offered with a V8 engine in two states of tune. In the Cayenne S, a newly developed 4.5-litre V8 generated 250kW, while the Cayenne Turbo delivered 331kW. These variants reached top speeds of 242km/h and 266km/h respectively.
It wasn’t all just about speed, though. Expectations in terms of the chassis were met with cornering dynamics handled by newly introduced electronic systems.
Porsche Traction Management (PTM) distributed drive power between the rear and front axles in a ratio of 62:38 as standard but could send all power to the front or rear axle, if required.
Away from paved roads, capability was
ensured with a low-range transfer case and fully locking centre differential. According to Porsche, the four-wheel drive system in the original Cayenne was the equal of competitor off-roaders.
While off-road capability remains, refining the on-road dynamics has arguably been Porsche’s focus since the firstgeneration version, reflective of the fact that many modern SUVs, and particularly premium models like the Cayenne, rarely venture off tarmac.
Another new technology developed for the original Cayenne was Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which continuously regulated the damping force of the shocks and incorporated the condition of the road and even the driving style into its calculations.
Air suspension was standard on the first-generation Cayenne, too, and allowed an already impressive ground clearance of 217mm to rise to 273mm.
Porsches are all about performance, though, so it wasn’t long before customers were demanding more than what the original Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo were producing. Porsche responded in 2006 with the introduction of the Cayenne Turbo S, which used the same 4.5-litre V8, but now in biturbo form, resulting in 383kW; exceptional for the standards of the time.
LIGHTER, FASTER, BETTER
“Establish, sharpen, refine” is Porsche head of design Michael Mauer’s description of the evolution of the Cayenne’s design, but it could also apply to the SUV’s technical progress.
To reduce weight, the second generation ‘E2’ Cayenne that was introduced in 2010 saw the low-range transfer case replaced with an on-demand all-wheel drive system and actively controlled multi-plate clutch that’s still in use on the current Cayenne.
The E2 also saw the introduction of hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains that feature a Torsen centre differential. Existing engine offerings gained additional power, while reducing fuel consumption by up to 23 per cent.
For the third-generation ‘E3’ that debuted in 2017, the objective was to heighten the Cayenne’s range of capabilities even further.
“It was all about making it sportier with greater ride comfort while maintaining off-road capabilities,” said Hans-Jürgen Wöhler, head of the Porsche SUV series from 2013 to 2020. “A three-chamber air suspension and rear-axle steering were specially developed for this purpose.
“The new aluminium bodyshell saved weight, making the vehicle even more efficient and agile. The E3 was also intended to offer a wide range of driver support capabilities through numerous new assistance systems.”
These driver assistance systems would be integrated into one unit on the E3, with updated connectivity via smartphone integration, WiFi and Bluetooth.
HELLO HYBRID, GOODBYE DIESEL
Reflecting global moves away from diesel vehicles, the third-generation Cayenne also saw the previously available 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 dropped and plug-in hybrid technology ramped up.
The foundation for today’s electrified Cayenne variants was laid back in 2007 and presented in concept form before coming onto the market in 2010 with the secondgeneration Cayenne, which happened to be the first series-production hybrid vehicle of any type offered by Porsche.
This was followed four years later by the first plug-in hybrid, which replaced the nickel-metal hydride battery with a lithium-ion one. While the supercharged V6 engine remained the same, e-motor output
increased from 34kW to 70 kW, resulting in total output increasing from 279kW to 306kW.
On electric power alone, plug-in hybrid variants of the current Cayenne can reach speeds of up to 135km/h, with range of up to 44km. The hybrid models use a 17.9kWh battery and 100kW electric motor for WLTP cycle fuel consumption as low as 2.4lt/100km.
Currently, the most powerful Cayenne variant is a hybrid, specifically the Turbo S E-Hybrid, which has been available since 2019 and features 500kW maximum output with combined fuel consumption of 3.2lt/100km on the NEDC cycle.
As with all plug-in hybrids from Porsche, the electric energy can be used for additional thrust in any driving mode. For example, in the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, harnessing the combined 900Nm available allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
SUPERCAR ON ANY TERRAIN
Since it was introduced, the Cayenne has demonstrated its capabilities in a range of extreme conditions.
In 2006, two private teams entered a Cayenne S in the two-week, 7,000km Transsyberia Rally from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia – and took first and second place.
Inspired by this, Porsche developed a limited run of 26 ‘Cayenne S Transsyberia’ cars as a customer racing vehicle, adding a rollcage, shorter axle ratio, diff lock, reinforced front wishbones, reinforced underbody panelling and all-terrain tyres.
The 4.5 V8 was unchanged, as were most of the factory features that had been incorporated into the production Cayenne up to that point, like direct fuel injection and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control that largely eliminated body roll in corners, while enabling greater axle articulation.
At the 2007 Transsyberia Rally, these factory-prepared SUVs scored a 1-2-3 finish, with seven finishing inside the top 10. A year later, 19 further optimised Cayenne S Transsyberia models started the Siberia Rally and took all but sixth place in the top 10.
More recently, in 2021, a Cayenne Turbo GT set a new SUV lap record on the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife of 7:38.925. Powered by a 471kW 4.0-litre biturbo V8, the Cayenne Turbo GT can also sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 300km/h.
THE ROADRUNNER PROJECT
The Cayenne Turbo GT is a product of a dedicated on-road performance programme that started in 2004 under the project name ‘Roadrunner’ and overseen by Oliver Laqua, now overall vehicle project manager for the Cayenne.
“We planned to dispense with the transfer case, because that saved 80 kilograms of weight. And we thought about four racing bucket seats for further weight reduction and a more emotive feel,” Laqua recalls.
The idea that an SUV had to offer all-
wheel drive was still paramount back in the early 2000s, so the RWD Roadrunner project wasn’t met with enthusiasm by Porsche’s decision makers, but Laqua and his team did get their way with a naturally aspirated V8 engine instead of a turbocharged one.
Other standard equipment included a six-speed manual transmission and a specially developed chassis that combined the steel suspension with PASM controlled damping – a concept that until then had been reserved for two-door sports cars.
The Roadrunner project would ultimately come to market as the Cayenne GTS in 2007, reviving a name last seen in 1995 on the 928 GTS.
Powered by a 4.8lt V8 delivering 298kW initially, output rose to 309kW for the second-generation Carrera GTS, while the 2015 model update saw a switch from the naturally aspirated V8 to a V6 biturbo. Despite the smaller displacement, this offered 15kW more power and consumed less fuel.
The current Cayenne GTS has returned to V8 power, this time a 4.0-litre unit producing 338kW. Inspired by the success of the Cayenne GTS, every model line at Porsche now includes a sporty GTS variant.
FAST START, ONGOING SUCCESS
Soon after its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September, 2002, the Cayenne became a worldwide success and would go on to exceed expectations.
Porsche had predicted 25,000 sales annually, but total sales of 276,652 for the eight model years of the first generation averaged out at just under 35,000 vehicles per year – a 40 per cent increase on initial expectations.
Subsequent generations have repeated this success, despite the smaller and cheaper Macan SUV stealing some of
the Cayenne’s customers in recent years. In 2021, well over 80,000 Cayennes were delivered, with the milestone millionth vehicle rolling off the Bratislava production line in 2020.
“With the Cayenne, we have succeeded - for the first time - in transferring the Porsche legend to a completely new market segment,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, back in 2017.
“Our sports car in the SUV segment has proven to be a bestseller and growth engine since 2002. The Cayenne has opened the door to many new markets for Porsche and made a significant contribution to the internationalisation of our sales network.”
Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche, adds: “As a style icon in the SUV segment, the Cayenne has helped strengthen the appeal of our brand, particularly in China and other Asian markets.
“The Cayenne has always been a major draw for our brand. It has brought many new customers and fans from all over the world to Porsche over the past 20 years, and I’m sure its popularity will remain strong in the future.”
Cayenne has regularly been Porsche’s top-selling model, only exceeded by the Macan in recent years.

With the Hawthorn Football Club entering a team in the AFLW competition for the first time this year, Nissan Australia has announced a partnership extension that will see their existing support added to the women’s team.
Nissan’s deal with Hawthorn’s AFL squad had already been extended for five years last December, with the AFLW support confirmed ahead of the debut home game for the women’s team in September. Nissan says the expansion of this successful relationship will not only continue to build brand awareness but also allow them to engage in a wider range of communities.

Information correct as of MAY 2022
Juliettelisted in this section every offroader in the new vehicle market in Australia – this includes softroaders.
A few things to know before you read:
How to use – this is a guide for you to see what’s in the market, rather than get highly detailed specs on every car. Have a browse here, then research in more detail via the manufacturer websites or dealer.
– Accuracy of data – for many vehicles there are many combinations of trim, engine, specification…You name it. If we tried to list every possible combination, the guide would be too long, so we’ve just listed representative figures in each case, mostly split by engine type.
Towing – remember that the figure quoted is the BRAKED tow weight for which you’ll need an electric brake controller.
Sections in this listing are updated periodically, but may not reflect current prices and specifications. Last update January 2022. Contact your relevant new car dealer for latest pricing and specifications.

SOFTROADERS
Vehicles designed for light-duty offroading.
The GV60 from Genesis arrived in Australia in September, with the compact electric SUV combining coupe-like styling with all-wheel drive as standard, a range of high-tech features and a driving range of 470km.
Built on EV-specific ‘E-GMP’ architecture, the GV60 not only has an impressive driving range, but also fast charging capability, with 80 per cent battery capacity achievable in just 18 minutes.
Two GV60 variants are offered – AWD and Performance AWD – both of which are well-equipped in terms of driver convenience and safety features, with the difference down to power output. The AWD delivers 234kW and 605Nm, while the Performance AWD peaks at 360kW and 700Nm.

OFFROADERS
Vehicles designed for offroad use.
Jeep have declared their intention to be global leaders in SUV electrification, announcing on 8 September that they will introduce four new fully-electric 4xe SUVs by 2025, with plans for 50 per cent of sales in the US and 100 per cent in Europe to be electric by 2030.
Jeep already offer the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids, but the upcoming models will be fully electric, led by the all-new Avenger (pictured), a compact SUV that will launch in Europe next year, followed by selected Asian markets.
Further details on the Avenger will follow its official unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in October.

A trio of robots at the Ford Proving Ground near Geelong in Victoria have been crucial in helping the next-generation Ranger ute maintain a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The robots, nicknamed Ray, Rosie and Roberto, help ensure the new Ranger’s advanced driver assist systems can handle a multitude of scenarios involving cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles.
Following 150 virtual crash tests, the robots were used in more than 100 physical crash tests for the Ranger and the Everest SUV. One of the new safety technologies to come out of this testing is an enhanced blind spot information system that now includes coverage for a conventional trailer measuring up to 2.4 x 10 metres.
