What sort of vehicle do adventurers, explorers and emergency services want for extreme environments? If British company Fering have read the market correctly, it’s their ‘Pioneer’, a lightweight, long range, four-wheel drive ute with all the capabilities of a diesel-powered 4x4, but offering less complexity and a lot less pollution.

The Pioneer is the brainchild of exFerrari and McLaren engineer Ben ScottGeddes, who has taken what he’s learnt with cutting edge supercar and racing technologies to create a vehicle that combines environmental responsibility with what he claims are unrivalled off-thegrid capabilities.

Scott-Geddes leads a team at Fering that includes designers, engineers and fabricators with experience across the automotive industry - from compact city EVs to military vehicles and premium supercars – as well as the aeronautical and marine industries.

The team also includes Mac McKenney, who has planned, trained, equipped and undertaken various automotive expeditions in hostile and remote environments around the world for more than 25 years.

LITTLE, BUT STRONG

Underpinning the Fering Pioneer is a lightweight aluminium spaceframe chassis with a compact footprint that’s no larger than a car-based delivery van and no heavier than a modern hatchback. Composite materials integrated into the aluminium spaceframe help keep the off-road ute down to around 1,500kg, but a greater contribution is made by the use of fabric coverings for several external panels. Such an approach was taken with ‘light cars’ a century ago and was also seen on some post-war invalid cars and microcars.

For the Pioneer, the fabric chosen is a canvas found in sails and high-end hiking boots. Its advantages, beyond reducing the vehicle’s weight, include being easy to replace and offering better in-vehicle insulation properties than conventional metal-skinned panels, according to Fering.

“We are planning on expanding the use of fabric to other parts of the vehicle, such as the inner wings, where we are sure it will have excellent noise insulation properties in addition to saving weight and complexity,” Scott-Geddes says.

The construction of the spaceframe, its light overall weight and the configuration of the Pioneer’s suspension means it can carry its own weight – 1,500kg - making it valuable for hauling firefighting apparatus into remote locations, medical equipment and/or patients following off-road accidents, mining gear and tools underground, explorers and expedition equipment or even a small squad of soldiers, as military use could be another application for the Pioneer.

READY FOR THE ROUGH

Along with the aforementioned features, off-road capability comes from the use of large - 22.5-inch - wheels that are designed to take commonly-available truck tyres, ensuring replacements are more likely to be found, even in remote areas.

As truck tyres are usually of thicker wall construction, it makes them more durable for the kinds of extreme environments the Pioneer is likely to be used in, while the light weight of the Pioneer means they’re subjected to less stress. Additionally, as truck tyres are often recapped, it reduces tyre waste, furthering the Pioneer’s green credentials.

The narrow cross section of truck tyres may be seen as a disadvantage off-road, but

according to Scott-Geddes, that’s not the case.

“To get a big patch of rubber in contact with the ground, you can either have wide tyres, or have them tall, but narrower,” ScottGeddes explains. “The latter option gives big benefits in off-road situations and makes the contact patch longitudinal.”

While the Pioneer’s tyres will be commonly available, the wheels are custom made and unique to the vehicle, designed to

offset the weight of the tyres to some degree, as well as being resistant to damage, simple to remove and easy to clean.

Specifications for the Pioneer’s suspension and brakes haven’t been revealed, other than to say the former is “sophisticated” and offers a lot of travel, with the latter mounted inboard on both the front and rear axles.

For all its practical touches, the Pioneer has one element that seems like a pure design feature in the form of a Union Jack that’s moulded into the ute’s tailgate. However, Fering says even this is functional, as the stampings to create the flag motif serve as strengthening ribs.

EV AND CLEAN FUEL

The Pioneer comes with four-wheel drive as standard, with both axles driven by electric motors. The type and capacity of these motors hasn’t been revealed, but Fering say they are “Best in Class” and produce a combined 800Nm of torque, which exceeds that of many diesel-powered 4x4s.

The drivetrain configuration allows either one of the driven axles to be deactivated in less demanding environments, while mounting the motors inboard ensures good wheel clearance in boggy conditions and over loose surfaces.

Initial design proposal for the Pioneer dates back to 2021.

degrade with repeated power cycling like some batteries do.

The battery allows for a claimed range of around 80km, but recognising the impracticality of this for long expeditions and other applications in off-the-grid environments, there’s a range extender in the form of an 800c three-cylinder internal combustion engine.

Like the electric motors and battery, the origins of the three-cylinder engine are unknown, but it’s likely from a production ATV of some type, with Kubota and Perkins producing engines in this capacity and configuration.

Fuelled by biodiesel to reduce emissions and improve efficiency, the 800cc triple is only used to charge the battery, not drive the wheels. With this engine in place, range extends to a claimed 7,000km with longrange tanks fitted. For applications where such range isn’t needed, the auxiliary tanks can be replaced with freshwater tanks or additional equipment.

Fuel economy is said to be exceptional, with the claimed 50mpg being around double the mileage of conventional diesel 4x4s, according to Fering, and closer to what you’d find in a modern diesel-engined hatchback.

The standard drivetrain can be replaced with alternatives, reflecting what the vehicle’s application might be or the fuels available in that area, like alcohol-fuelled engines in Brazil, for example. Fering says larger batteries can be incorporated into the Pioneer’s modular design, too.

PHASE 2 BEGINS

In December, Fering announced that, following extensive testing of their ‘Prototype 1’ development ute at the UK’s Milbrook Proving Ground, two more prototypes will be produced in 2023, using what’s been learned on the original to incorporate upgrades.

“Driving over the obstacles showed the very good natural ability of the Pioneer in severe off-road conditions,” Scott-Geddes

explains. “It was able to traverse all the physical standard obstacles we tried without any issue, including those intended to challenge much larger and extreme military vehicles.

“The off-road capability is exceptional, proving our design philosophy of low overall weight, large diameter tyres and long wheel travel works brilliantly.”

Key to moving forward with Prototype 2 and Prototype 3 has been securing funding, which Fering credits to demonstrations of the Pioneer they’ve conducted to show its capabilities.

Customers have been confirmed, too, and while they are organisations, not individuals, Fering has not confirmed who those organisations are.

Fering’s next batch of prototype testing with the Pioneer EV 4x4 is due to be completed in mid-2023, with low-volume production to commence later in the same year, ahead of large-scale production in 2025.

The first Pioneer prototype has successfully completed testing in the UK on dedicated off-road courses designed to break vehicles.

Large wheels are unique to the Pioneer, but designed to take commonly-available truck tyres.

In terms of the greatest period for automotive styling over the past 100 years, it’s hard to go past the late 1920s and ‘30s. Back then, dozens of beautiful bespoke and coachbuilt automobiles came out of Europe, with some of the most outstanding –some may say outlandish –examples of automotive art being the product of French coachbuilders.

With the likes of Marcel Pourtout and Saoutchik designing and building stunning bodies for various chassis, France saw some outstanding coachbuilt automobiles in the 1930s, but arguably the most famous coachbuilder from this period was Figoni et Falaschi.

Despite the Italian names, Figoni et Falaschi was a French enterprise and the car shown here, a 1937 Talbot-Lago T-150C-SS, was just one example of the flair that typified the Paris-based carrossiers during the Art Deco period.

In addition to its stunning styling, what makes this particular Talbot-Lago special is its rarity and the fact it’s now a world record holder, too.

ROUGH ROAD

Mostly forgotten today, Talbot-Lago flourished for a brief period either side of World War II, with its impact on the automotive market out of all proportion to its output at the time.

The roots of Talbot-Lago go back to 1922, when a buyout of Darracq a decade earlier

led to that marque being rebranded as Talbot, although the cachet of the Darracq name meant it continued to be used in certain markets for years afterward.

The ‘Lago’ part of the name came in the 1930s, with the arrival of Antonio Lago, an Italian born, British-based businessman who had been hired by Talbot in 1932 to improve the finances of a business that was struggling in the Great Depression.

Despite Lago’s input, Talbot went into receivership in 1934, but he thought the marque could be revived and worked to buy the remains of the firm from the receivers in a deal that was finalised in 1936.

Even before the new ‘Talbot-Lago’ marque came into being, Lago had been overseeing new model developments, which gathered pace following completion of the buyout. Most of these were conventional four- and six-cylinder touring saloons in the middle to upper price bracket, fitted with stylish, but conservative bodies.

The ‘C’ and ‘SS’ version of the T-150 meant a tuned six-cylinder engine fitted with three carburettors and delivering 104bhp.

and with engines tuned to deliver more performance, the sporting models included the Lago Spéciale, T-150 and Lago SS. The ultimate example of these sports models was the T-150-C-SS (“C” for Competition and “SS” for Super Sport).

Powered by a 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine fitted with three Zenith-Stromberg carburettors and producing around 140bhp

(104kW), the T-150-C-SS also featured a four-speed Wilson pre-selector transmission, mechanical drum brakes on all four wheels and a suspension package made up of an upper wishbone and lower transverse leaf spring front end, with a leaf spring and live axle rear end.

The start of World War II eliminated further development of cars like these, while the changing automobile environment post-war meant Talbot-Lago joined French contemporaries like Delahaye, Bugatti and Delage in being unsuitable for the new, mass-production marketplace.

Talbot-Lago was wound up in 1959 after being acquired by Simca, although the Talbot name would reappear in the 1980s.

ULTIMATE EXPRESSION

Getting back to Talbot-Lago’s pre-war sporting models, the high price for the rolling chassis (as these cars were sold at the time) meant few were produced. However,

those who could afford a Talbot-Lago could also afford to have it clothed in bespoke bodywork.

Although a variety of coachbuilders were commissioned to body the T-150C-SS chassis, only around 10 to 12 were done by Figoni et Falaschi. The Parisian coachbuilders offered the choice of a notchback design called ‘Jencart’ (named after the first customer who commissioned one), or a fastback dubbed ‘Modéle New York’ (as it had debuted at the 1937 New York Auto Show), both of which were handformed in aluminium.

Collectively, these stylish coupes were referred to as ‘Goutte d’Eau’ (teardrop) for their sleek, delicately curved shape, while a development of the Modéle New York took the streamlining approach of the fastback even further by adding fairing skirts to the front wheels.

Only two examples of the fully-faired Modéle New York body were produced by Figoni et Falaschi on the T-150-C-SS chassis and the example shown, chassis #90107, is the only one to retain its original coachwork.

FRENCH AMERICAN . . . AND BRIEFLY AUSTRALIAN

Despite being a signature pre-war French car, this Talbot-Lago has spent most of its life in the USA. The early history of chassis #90107 is unclear, but it’s believed to have been commissioned by “Suicide Freddie” McEvoy, a wealthy, Australian-born playboy who was a sportsman, motor racing enthusiast and a medallist for Great Britain at the Winter Olympics in 1936.

Although McEvoy owned the car for less than two years, it was used and displayed regularly in this time, winning the Prix d’Excellence at the 1938 Concours d’Elegance Fémina in Paris.

Interior was retrimmed and all instrumentation refurbished as part of a full restoration in 2004. Note the RHD, a feature common to some premium French cars, including all Bugattis, pre-WWII.

Stewart Lee, another well-heeled socialite, was chassis #90107’s second owner and would acquire two more T-150C-SS coupes in the years that followed. Based in California, Lee had the Figoni et Falaschi bodywork on chassis #90107 repainted from its original blue and silver to red during his ownership and would occasionally race it across the empty deserts beyond his home.

Following Lee’s death in 1950, the Talbot-Lagos and many other cars in his extensive collection were sold. Chassis #90107 remained in California under the ownership of John Duckworth, then Lindley Locke, who put the car into storage in the 1960s, where it was left untouched for the next four decades.

In 2004, Locke’s widow donated the Talbot-Lago to the Nethercutt Collection, who completed a thorough restoration of the car, including a return to its original blue-over-silver paint.

Fresh from its restoration, this T-150-CSS would win a First in Class award at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, followed by Best in Show at the 2007 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and other concours successes.

TO AUCTION

After 18 years in the Nethercutt Collection, Talbot-Lago T-150-C-SS chassis #90107 was consigned for auction with Gooding & Company for their 2022 Amelia Island auction.

In advance of the auction on 4 March, Gooding & Co. had confidently predicted the car would sell for in excess of US$10 million, given its condition and being the sole surviving T-150-C-SS with an original Modéle New York fully-faired body.

To give this some context, another T-150-

C-SS sold for 3.3 million Euros (AU$4.6 million approx.) in 2011, but this was when some classic car prices were close to their post-GFC nadir.

For Gooding & Co’s Amelia Island sale, the Talbot-Lago was offered midway through a 99-consignment auction that included many other highly-desirable pre- and post-war classics, as well as competition cars and modern supercars.

Starting with a US$5 million bid, the Talbot-Lago soon exceeded its pre-auction estimate of US$10 million.

Unusually for an auction these days, the car was subject to a final battle between two bidders on the floor at the Omni Amelia Island resort in Florida, rather than online and phone bidders. These two ultimately pushed the price to more than US$13 million before the hammer fell.

Including buyer’s premium, the final price of US$13,425,000 (AU$18.25M approx.) paid for this Talbot-Lago not only

represents a new world record price for the marque, but also a new world record price for any French car sold at auction.
