>> Dai Yoshihara piloting the 2JZ-powered IS during last year’s Super Lap Battle.

NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE It’s not often we put a Lexus on the front page of the mag. For many of us, it’s a bit out of our price range. Hell, I can barely afford to get into an old Civic, let alone a brand new Lexus. Plus, the brand typically associates itself more with luxury than raw performance. But walking through SEMA last year, this sleek and modest, yet performance-focused IS stopped me in my tracks. I can remember dropping my backpack on the ground and snapping photos like I was paparazzi using both my SLR and iPhone (had to Instagram that shit!). This Lexus wasn’t just fresh because it was one of the first modified third-gen ISs, but it was built the way we would have wanted it. Clean exterior, race-inspired interior and an engine bay and chassis that are all about going fast on the street and around a road course. While a Lexus might not be for all of us, this car is the epitome of what Super Street tuning is about. A fast road car that’s sexy enough for the car show, proven on the road course and a hit with the ladies!

As I write this letter with a couple hours before this issue goes to press, I’ve just been confirmed to drive on the Gumball 3000 this year. And what better car to take than this month’s cover car! I have been to hundreds of photoshoots, but none compare to this month’s cover feature. WORDS B.K. Nakadashi PHOTOS Jayson Santoyo acing improves the breed, the old adage goes. Just because your grandpappy said things like that doesn’t mean it’s not true. There are some very potent examples where this is so: Nissan’s RB26DETT—the twin-turbo inline-six that lived in R32, R33 and R34 Skylines, was a race engine that was backed off just enough for street duty; Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evo—up through number IX, was also more of a tamed bespoke race machine for the street than a fortified street car. No one will deny that either of these machines is hard-edged and droolworthy. But rare is the blown Skyline whose engine has turned laps in points-paying Group A competition; they almost certainly won’t turn up in your driveway. Rare too is the Lancer Evo that’s survived competition in one piece, its engine removed from the ragged edge and placed into plebian commuter duty. Clearly, while proven race competition is something that car companies like to trade on, actual raced components are few and far between. And so Paul Coffman’s 1991 Acura NSX is that rare beast: a daily-driven machine whose specially-fettled heart has seen full-throttle, flat-out competition. He’d been obsessed with the Tochigi terror for more than a decade, and had the opportunity to sample multiple years and body styles

to come to a couple of conclusions: “I not wanted an early model NSX, as I did I top. Targa a or ing steer r powe want wanted the pure driving experience of the original car. I also always dreamt of having a LoveFab turbo kit, so I didn’t want the later model six-speed transmission, but rather the five-speed for the turbo.” Another problem: Paul lives in Hawaii, which means he could wait to find one of the fifteen or so NSXs that lived in the state, or fly to pay the mainland to test-drive one, then to ship the car of his dreams back to a Honolulu. A round-trip plane ticket is big entry fee for a simple test-drive. Yet somehow, finding this one was car as easy as walking across a crowded M3 E46 my ed enter I 2012 “In : show into the Spocom show; I had literally just finished the build the day before the show. As soon as I got there, all of my friends told me ‘Paul, there’s an NSX here that is screaming your name.’ The second I saw this NSX, I announced I’d that my BMW was for sale, mind you out, and e insid it, built letely comp just supercharged, KWs, everything... I won I the Euro category that day, but once a found the owner of the NSX I struck and home M3 my took I him. with deal began stripping it down. I also sold my totally-built Harley so I could come up with the cash for the NSX.” Regrets? None. “It’s still the best decision I’ve made yet.” Another plus for Paul: this particular NSX has lived in Hawaii since new. Now, for those of you looking at the flush-light nose and thinking that Paul settled for a newer machine, think again. “The NSX had 82,000 miles when I bought it; it already had the 2002+ nose conversion, was painted white with the blue pearl inlay, and had some

14 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

modifications like headers, exhaust and throttle body. I have changed almost 100% of the car since I purchased it except the color. I always planned on adding a turbo kit, but I had no idea I’d end up with the LoveFab NSX engine.” And this is where things start getting a little nutty. The LoveFab NSX attacked Pikes Peak in 2012; it didn’t much look like an NSX, but with three-liter Honda power, a dyno-tested 1056 horsepower at the wheels and the achievement of Second Place in the Unlimited class that year, the car and the run attracted worldwide media attention. (As an NSX fan, Paul paid attention as well.) Yet, as it is with so many things in life, it’s a little bit timing and a little bit who (or what) you know that saw Paul end up with that very engine in his own car. “Once I had my NSX, I contacted Cody at LoveFab; my original intentions were to put a turbo on the stock block, drive it until the engine blew up, then do a full build. While we were sorting that out, Cody mentioned to me that he was going to put an LS in his 2013 Pikes Peak car.” That meant unloading this run-once-andrebuilt 1000+-horse NSX mill. “I had to have it.” And it wasn’t money that got the deal done… not entirely, anyway: “I’m also a web designer; Cody needed a new website for his company, as his sponsors were looking for an upgraded and more professional-looking website. So, he had an engine, I had web skills, and we struck a deal.” As refreshed, the 3.0-liter block used 9:1 compression, 90.5mm bore pistons by CP plus Carillo rods that were balanced to within half a gram. Supertech valves, valve springs and retainers lived within the heads. The timing belt is a Power Enterprise Super Kevlar II piece. “Cody was running a bigger turbo and injectors than me,” Paul says. “I dialed it down with a smaller turbo for two reasons: First, I wanted boost in the low-3000rpm range and didn’t want huge lag. I chose the smaller GTX3582R for the time being, but since the new GTX4088R is out, I’m switching soon. Converting to the 4088R will mean we add a second Walboro 400lph fuel pump, switching out my RC1000 injectors for ID2000s, plus a new intercooler and 16 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

pump, Y-pipe and turbo manifold. “And second, since it doesn’t have a widebody kit, I couldn’t get enough tire on the back, so anything north of 700 rear-wheel horsepower is pointless for actual performance. I want a fast car, not a dyno queen.” Current power peak is at a mere 642hp—nearly two and a half times what a stock NSX made from the factory a quarter-century ago—and though there’s obviously potential for plenty more, Paul’s desire to keep things reliable and streetable underscores his decision-making. Other changes came as well. “The LoveFab turbo normally uses a pair of small heat exchangers sandwiched between each of the front A/C compressors, with the intercooler pump up front and the intercooler itself in the rear. However, we decided to use twin B&M SuperCooler Oil Coolers instead. We mounted them in front of the radiator, just behind the front bumper, both for maximum airflow and also so they wouldn’t hinder my already-crappy air conditioning. Since it’s a daily driver and Hawaii is hot, I wanted to keep the A/C.” Oh, didn’t we mention? This is Paul’s daily driver. “Well, I drive it 80-percent of the time—I have an old pickup I use for getting to canoe practice. Otherwise, I drive my NSX. That’s one of the main reasons I wanted one—it’s still a Honda with Honda reliability. Since it’s a daily driver, I couldn’t live without having the iLift anti-scrape system installed; that system is what makes my daily driving possible. The NSX has a long nose, and I have my KW Club Sports set low so without iLift, driving my car almost anywhere would be impossible. It’s one of the best modifications I’ve done.” You’d suspect that he’d have to run jet fuel 24/7 to keep it happy, but Paul swears this isn’t the case. “Mostly I drive it on pump gas, but occasionally

[TUNING MENU]

1991 Acura NSX I’ll put C16 in it. I’m running AEM EMS Version 1, so there are some limitations to switching tunes easily. We wired a toggle switch to a ground on the EMS, so when it’s on pump fuel it runs at 16psi of boost. On C16, I flip the switch and run it at 26psi. Soon I’m going to upgrade the ECU to AEM Infinity so I can run a flex fuel system. E85 is way cheaper than C16—C16 is $27/gallon here! My goal is 700-plus rear-wheel horsepower on pump gas and 800-plus on E85.” You’d forgive it if it had this kind of power and looked plain, had mismatched panels, or wore primer like battle scars. Not so here. Though he bought a show car, Paul altered most of the NSX’s stylistic cues; save for the paint and the late-nose conversion, precious little of what he purchased remained intact. “I’ve taken off the NSX-R wing and replaced it with the current big rear wing; I needed the downforce, and also wanted something more aggressive. I like the 2002+ headlight look, and was glad this car was converted, but I changed it up with the current black bezels and LED angel eyes. “I also wanted to keep the weight off, so lots of my mods were weight-oriented. It weighed in at 2740 pounds—about ten-percent less than the 3010-pound curb weight advertised new for a ‘91 NSX. Mind you, that’s with all of the extra plumbing of the turbocharger included.” Paul’s even toying around with the idea of a new coat of blue-pearl-infused white paint, but fears that he won’t want to drive it afterward. And that would be a shame. After all, with a ten-percent weight savings and two and a half times the stock power from a race-proven powerplant, “Every morning I wake up, I’m excited to get in my NSX and drive somewhere.” Racing doesn’t just improve the breed—it also makes Paul Coffman’s morning commute an event. Every single time. 18 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

YOU HAD US AT 2JZ-GTE SWAP… WORDS Sam Du PHOTOS Terence Patrick

hen Gordon Ting debuted this 2JZ-powered 2014 Lexus IS at SEMA last year, it was bound to stir up some controversy. An old Toyota motor in a brand new luxury sedan… Was it crazy? Were people going to get offended? Yes and yes! But we had no objections to the idea; in fact, we loved it so much we wanted to put the world’s craziest third-generation Lexus IS on the cover! And why not throw in a bonus poster for you guys 20 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

while we’re at it! We don’t always give something with the Lexus badge this much attention. Most builds are either VIP, stance or simply too tame (or lame!). But Gordon was given the opportunity to build two new IS models and create some buzz. He hit not one, but two home runs with a show-stoppin’ IS 250 AWD (see P. 30), plus this panty-droppin’ IS 350… or shall we say, IS 340!

“We’ve had a history of building SEMA vehicles for Lexus over the last few years,” Gordon explained. “There have been a lot of builds out there that claim crazy horsepower, but it’s never proven. That’s where this 2J project came in… We built this car, not just as a badass show vehicle, but also as a badass performance vehicle. So right after SEMA we took it to Buttonwillow Raceway and tracked it.” And just like that, Gordon shut up the skeptics. It was shocking to us

because even the bigwigs at Lexus supported the project. Currently, the new IS is only offered with a 204hp 2.5-liter V6 and 306hp 3.5-liter V6. So getting monster power from either of the factory engines in a twomonth time frame wasn’t going to be easy, and would take months of testing. So the idea of a 2JZ-GTE swap was born. Plus, it’s a Toyota motor so it keeps things in the family. With time ticking and SEMA approaching, Gordon brought on the SUPER STREET ONLINE.COM 21

BREAKIN’ THE 2JZ-GTE DOWN By Aaron Bonk

They don’t make ’em like they used to. Never before has that statement been truer than when talking about Toyota’s mid-1990s JZ series of engines. Toyota manufactured the 24-valve, inline-six-cylinder JZ in 2.5L and 3.0L configurations, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged, but it’s the 3.0L, sequentially turbocharged 2JZ-GTE that you care about. The development of Toyota’s belt-driven, turbocharged 2JZ was an indirect response to Nissan’s already successful RB series of engines, which also featured an inline layout and cast-iron bottom end and dominated the circuit throughout Japan. Exclusive to the 1993-1998 twin-turbo Supra in the United States, the factory-boosted, twin-cam powerplant yielded a best of 320 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque in what many considered a moderately detuned state, in part because of Japan’s industry-wide and now defunct gentlemen’s agreement, which was nothing more than a horsepower ceiling that the automakers agreed upon. Nevertheless, they are impressive numbers if you ask the 1990s. It isn’t necessarily the 2JZ’s baseline power figures that’ll get you all riled up, though. As it turns out, Toyota’s cast-iron-block is capable of producing the sort of power that very few production engines can. In stock form with nothing more than external upgrades, 600hp is entirely possible. When built to the hilt with the appropriate internals and single-turbo conversion, upwards of 1,500hp has been strewn from the 2JZ-GTE time and again, making it a longtime favorite for drag racers, drifters and road racers alike. help of his good friends who are also experts when it comes to turning wrenches and custom fab work—Philip Chase and Ben Schwartz. The two managed the project through its entirety, which started by simply removing the stock 3.5-liter V6. They had placed an order for a JDM 2JZ via eBay Japan, but it hadn’t arrived in time. So the team borrowed a spare motor from a friend to get things going. Phil and Ben fabricated custom brackets using the temporary inline-six while they determined stock Supra parts could be used for engine mounts. Once their actual engine arrived, it was torn down and assembled with the help of Evasive Motorsports. A 3.4-liter stroker kit from Brian Crower came first, which included a stronger crank and beefier rods. Forged JE pistons were added 22 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

while the cylinder head was given the whole nine yards via CNC work by Mission Critical. The valvetrain also received Brian Crower cams and valves. For boost, the original twin-turbo setup was ditched for a Garrett GTX3582R turbo mounted to an ETS manifold. Cooling and fuel upgrades weren’t forgotten either with a GReddy intercooler, 1000cc injectors, dual fuel pumps, custom surge tank and oil coolers thrown into the equation. Once all the engine hardware was buckled in, it came time to shoehorn the beast in. To everyone’s surprise, it fit almost like a glove. No cutting was needed, the subframe and oil pan fit perfect, and the firewall wasn’t even touched. With the motor in, a custom 4” exhaust was crafted as well as a custom engine harness from Rywire. Puttin’ all that power to the wheels is an R154 tranny out of a Mk3 Supra. While it might not be the Supra Getrag tranny that costs as much as $7,000, the five-speed manual is affordable, strong and gets the job done. To ensure power transfer to the rear wheels, an OS Giken triple-plate clutch and limited-slip were installed. With the expertise of Evasive and an AEM standalone, the 2J beast was tuned on the dyno with a final result of 639whp (731hp at crank) and 596 lb-ft (685 lb-ft at crank)—it’s not wild for a 2JZ but the power is usable for road course and some street duties. With its extensive work, Phil tells us this motor setup is over-built. Eventually, the plan is to upgrade to a GTX4088R and reach the 800whp—this is similar to the turbo used in Ken Gushi’s Formula D car. We can’t wait for that! Because the factory steering is electric and controlled by the ECU, a manually hydraulic one was swapped in. Other upgrades to complement the additional power included IS F axles—the stock 350 ones were puny—plus a custom driveshaft. Chassis upgrades weren’t skimped on either with Brembo supplying front and rear big brakes, coilovers from KW using stiffer spring rates, custom a-arms and lightweight Advan

wheels matched to some very sticky Toyo R888s. After 60 days with many sleepless nights, the IS 340 was finished and transported to Las Vegas for SEMA. It was easily one of our favorite cars from the convention. It still baffles us that there were no major complications with the swap and we are impressed with how quickly Gordon and his team finished it. It might not be competitive in a true time attack race because of how heavy a Lexus is, but it does have a powertrain and chassis that’s proven on the dyno and road course. How many show cars can claim that?

SWAPPOR 10 OF OUR FAVORITE 2JZ SWAPS FEATURED GREDDY/SCION RACING/KEN GUSHI’S SCION FR-S

April 2014 A car that needs little introduction, here’s another look at Ken Gushi’s chariot for Formula D this year. We shot the Rocket Bunny V2-kitted Scion after it debuted at SEMA before its current livery. The entire car was built by GReddy, which included the 3.4-liter 2J beast matched with a T88 turbo—perfect for high horsepower and drifting duties.

WESTLY YACINTHE’S 1993 MAZDA RX-7

November 2013 We couldn’t do this list without having an FD in the mix. Last year’s cover car by Westly Yacinthe of Florida broke our necks with its powerful 2JZ swap—1,038hp to be exact. And sporting classic Veilside styling, it’s hard for us not to dig this sweet and sacrilegious RX-7.

RANZ MOTORSPORTS’ 1973 MERCEDES 280C

March 2013 This '70s classic stole the show at SEMA 2012 in the Nitto Tire booth. Built by Ranz Motorsports of Southern California, the ol’ Benz drives completely like factory with no check engine lights. Inside, it also rocks a complete Lexus IS 250 interior with power seats and all. This car is pristine!

KAZAMA AUTO’S 2005 LEXUS IS 250

May 2010 Kazama modified the engine compartment, floorboard, suspension and driveline to make a 2JZ run like butter. The electronic steering was ditched for a UCF30 rack out of the LS430—not easy at all! When all was said and done, the widebody sedan (nicknamed IS-GT Concept) makes 600+hp and is still one of the baddest ISs to date.

C&Y SPORTS’ NISSAN FAIRLADY Z

March 2012 The Nagoya-based shop C&Y Sports realized RB and SR swaps were getting played out in Japan for the Z32 chassis. So they stepped up the game, dropping in this built 3.1-liter 2JZ that runs two different setups—550hp for the street and 700hp for the track with a larger turbo. Along with Mission aero, TE37s and Trust brakes, this might be one of the dopest Z32s in tuner history!

SCOTT KANEMURA’S 1972 TOYOTA HILUX PICKUP

January 2014 Scott Kanemura’s Hilux is pretty badass, even though it’s still under construction. The truck is floored to the ground thanks to a notched frame, custom rear suspension and new front suspension based on the Ford Mustang. The 2JZ received stronger rods and an HKS/Garrett turbo. It’s still rusted and in a primer finish, but we think it adds to this pickup’s rugged and a gangsta character.

CHRIS BISHOP’S 1996 INFINITY Q45

June 2012 Wait, this wasn’t in Super Street! We decided to steal this from our friends at Import Tuner because it’s a pretty sick build. The Q45 is straight up VIP murder status with its all-black look, custom Work wheels and stance. Under the hood, the owner ditched the V8 for a reliable 2JZ swap that makes a solid 449whp.

ROGUE STATUS’ 2008 SCION XB

September 2011 Not only is this xB rockin’ the 2J swap, it’s also converted to rear-wheel drive! Originally owned by one of the lead partners in DTA/Rogue Status, the widebody Scion was one-of-a-kind and put down a dependable 400whp on pump gas. We have legendary Papadakis Racing to thank for this wicked project.

STEVEN MILLS’ 2004 NISSAN 350Z

August 2012 One of the wilder Z33s we’ve featured, Steven Mills used the help of Tech2 Motorsports to complete his swap. The owner originally felt the factory VQ wasn’t going to make enough power and offer the reliability that a 2J would. Sure enough, he built his ings+1-kitted 350Z to 700hp.

E-SHIFT PERFORMANCE’S BMW 325I AND M5

November 2010 New Jersey’s E-Shift Performance was already known for doing swaps on RX-7s and 240s but these two BMWs featured in the now-retired eurotuner mag caught our attention most. The E36 325i is a stealthy street car that makes 517whp on pump gas, but the E39 M5 is the most blasphemous project. Ditching an already buff 5.0-liter V8, E-Shift dropped in a 550whp 2JZ. The project wasn’t received well by Euro purists, but E-Shift reaffirmed that the Toyota motor made the most reliable and affordable horsepower with the least amount of maintenance and headaches.

A LEXUS IS THAT HAS ALL THE RIGHT PARTS AND IS POPULAR WITH THE LADIES. HOLLA! WORDS Sam Du PHOTOS Terence Patrick he star of this issue is undoubtedly the 2JZ-swapped IS you just read about. But there’s another player we can’t forget—this all-wheel drive IS 250. It’s nothing out of this world, but it’s functional, clean and yes, ladies love a white Lexus! The white IS was Gordon Ting’s second build for last year’s SEMA show. It was put front and center in the Toyo Tires booth and we couldn’t help but admire how stunning it looked for a new IS, especially with the TRD kit and one-off fender flares. The custom add-on flares aren’t as pronounced as a Rocket Bunny or Liberty Walk design, but give the sexy sedan a little more style and sportiness.

SUPER STREET ONLINE.COM 31

The chassis has been updated with the necessities—TEIN coilovers and Brembo brakes. The wheels draw our attention the most though, with bright red Gram Lights 57Xtremes—a perfect complement to the Starfire Pearl paint. The project is finished off with some GReddy bolt-ons, Sparco seats and a custom roll-bar fabricated by Evasive Motorsports. This IS is more tame and might not be the center of attention, but we appreciate it because it’s an example of a true build any enthusiast can do. Minus the fender flares and roll-bar, everything on this car is available to the public. It demonstrates what’s possible with the new IS. Plus, with all-wheel drive and a bike rack, you could literally take this car anywhere and with anyone. Hey, ladies!

This isn’t the first time the lovely Filipina model Janey B has graced the pages of Super Street. We featured her in our “Cooling Guide” a couple years ago and also named her the cover model for the July '12 issue. Now she’s back looking sexier than ever! Still dancing for a living? Yes, but I manage all the dancers now at three nightclubs in San Diego, plus I work in PR and marketing during the day. So what are a couple special skills you have? Fire dancing. I basically dance with metal prongs on my hands that are on fire. I’m also working on dancing with fire poi; you know, the ones you see in a luau. Fire has just always fascinated me. When I was younger I tried to spit fire! I’m also into aerial arts—mainly the hoop known as the lyra. What was your worst job? Wouldn’t say it was my worst job, just different. I worked at a Nut Hut and I’d roast cinnamon almonds all day. I’d get bored, sit there on my stool and start yelling, “Anyone want some nuts? You want to try my nuts?” It wasn’t so bad though because I’d always have a snack! What’s your go-to drink at the bar? Anything with tequila in it. I don’t like Patron so I prefer Don Julio, 1942 especially. What’s your favorite part of your body? I always get compliments on how strong my arms and back look, but I’d say my boobs because I paid for them! Finally, tell us three facts about you. I’m allergic to wine, I’m obsessed with bacon and donuts, and I love performing in front of big crowds, but I hate being in the middle of crowds. Don’t touch me!

W

e never had the pleasure of getting the Z20 Toyota Soarer on US soil. Perhaps the most relatable aspect of the '86-91 Soarer is that it shares the same chassis as the A70 Supra, where powerplants like the 1G, 7M and 1J/2J were interchangeable. Some might say we were blessed with the Lexus SC300/400—the successor to the Z20. But for us JDM fanboys, a piece of us was still missing since we never received this fine rearwheel drive, boxy coupe that begged to be driven hard or even drifted; hence why our hearts fluttered when we came across this never-before-seen Z20 from Japan. Akihiro Nakamura snagged this '91 Soarer just before the next generation came marching in. The chassis originally came with a turbocharged 7M-GTE, but since the newer and more powerful JZ engines were a direct swap, it was a no-brainer what Nakamura-san was going to do. He decided to piece together a fully-built 3.0-liter 1.5JZ. Confused? A 1.5JZ consists of a 1JZ head with a 2JZ short block. This hybrid combination uses a high flowing head mated with a large turbo, all equating to a quick compressor spool. United with the larger 3.0-liter short block, Nakamura-san benefits from low-end torque and great peak power. The bottom-end received a grip of reinforcement to serve his power demands, not necessarily for reinforcement but for longevity with newer metals and fresh components. The guys at R Performance installed forged Tomei pistons and connecting rods in preparation for the ogre-esque T04R turbo. An HKS standalone computer controls the engine assembly working in conjunction with its various sensors. A five-speed R154 transmission, a direct cousin of the robust six-speed Supra V160 Getrag, was reused but upgraded with a twin-plate Ogura Racing Clutch. The rejuvenated powertrain gave the Soarer reliable and quick-spooling power with a peak of 550whp, plenty of cojones for Nakamura-san’s weekend drift events. Because this car was built to slide, super-stiff 20kg front and 11kg rear Swift springs on the Aragosta-based coilovers were a perfect match for the drift machine. At a whopping 6.5-degrees camber, the front struts have been set up Oni-kyan style (demon camber) by which no pun was ever intended to this “Oni Style” Soarer name. The Soarer comes equipped with a double wishbone suspension, so the camber adjustment had to be done via upper and lower arms and not by camber plates—a large hint that the suspension components were modified for performance and stance. All alignment settings were configured according to Nakamura’s driving style. For the exterior, beige metallic was chosen to envelop the factory Soarer aero, including the JZA70 Supra front lip. Each fender was delicately pulled and folded to accommodate the staggered TE37 Super Lap wheels. Not just for show, Nakamura50 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

In fact, these wheels were so emphasized for their weight-saving characteristic that Volk never included center caps. Yes, every ounce matters when it comes to lightweight tuning! The massively wide wheels were wrapped with Dunlop DZ101 tires—slightly stretched for fender clearance. Twin red Recaros act like a partition to the gutted rear and carpeted front interior. The Cusco Safety 21 rollcage prohibits more than two occupants in this machine, with various gauges and a deep dish MOMO steering wheel indicative of this Toyota’s serious sliding potential. So while we never saw the Z20 here stateside, Nakamura-san has shown us a good example of how the perfect one is built. WORDS Aaron Bonk PHOTOS Cullen Cheung oney—or generating enough of it fast enough—was just about the only obstacle Yaqi Zhang ran into when putting together what he calls his “Banana Voltex Evo.” It’s the sort of predictable first-world problem that anybody who’s attempted to meld the worlds of showboats and track brats together is likely familiar with. Right about now you’re expecting to hear about all sorts of other mishaps Zhang and his Evo VIII had worked themselves into, like a connecting rod that might’ve landed on the sidewalk or a crooked engine shop that could’ve done him wrong from valve cover to oil pan…But you won’t. That’s mostly because Zhang’s 530whp Evo buildup was thoroughly orchestrated from its onset and relegated to the sort of body shops and tuners that don’t hustle customers’ parts on Craigslist. Embarking on this project with Mitsubishi’s venerable 4G63 powerplant—an engine that survived through nine generations of Evos—also did its part in warding off any sort of trouble. And that’s exactly where the story of Zhang’s Evo begins, underneath its Seibon hood. Here, the cast-iron block was fitted with forged pistons and connecting rods from Wiseco and R&R, along with ACL bearings throughout and AMS seals and gaskets. 4G63 TIMELINE

For nine consecutive generations of Lancer Evolutions, Mitsubishi’s venerable 4G63 powertrain has continued to fill the void beneath the hood of the company’s flagship four-cylinder model. Over the years it’s gone through several transformations, but the architecture of the company’s 2.0-liter cast-iron block and 16-valve aluminum head have wavered little. A number of 4G63 iterations have been presented, but it’s the DOHC turbocharged version that you care about. An 85mm bore and 88mm stroke are standard for every version, but even among the twin-cam turbo platform, cylinder heads, turbochargers and manifolds can vary between models. The original, late-1980s 4G63 that can be traced back to the Galant and the Diamond Star trio of Eclipses, Lasers, and Talons was the direct result of Mitsubishi’s rally racing efforts. FIA Group A rally rules meant that the company was forced to develop a production-ready 2.0-liter, turbocharged powerplant that could drive all four wheels. These early 4G63 engines produced 195hp—an impressive figure for a four-cylinder production engine built exactly a quarter of a century ago. By 1992, the engine had made its way into the overseas-only Evo, where it remained until the introduction of the tenth-generation model. By the end of the 4G63’s long run, it featured a larger turbo, variable valve timing on its intake side and an impressive 286hp and 289 lb-ft of torque.

dropped into place, resulting in 2.4-liters of displacement. It’s a concise list of upgrades for an engine that’s nearly doubled its power rating. But it’s exactly the sort of result Mitsubishi fans like Zhang have come to expect of the now-discontinued 2.0-liter 4G63. “The only constant of nine generations of the Evo is the 4G63,” Zhang reminds us. “It became a legend…until environmental concerns and enterprising business strategies resulted in [its replacement], which left many performance fans, like me, disappointed.” But we’re not here to debate the merits of or any perceived shortcomings of Mitsubishi’s 4G63 replacement—the 4B11T. What makes Zhang’s Evo tick is a whole lot more intriguing. Assembled and tuned at the hands of the Pacific Northwest’s English Racing, a more capable Forced Performance ball bearing turbo is responsible for the dyno numbers. The largerframe compressor is accompanied by a higher-flowing Extreme Turbo Systems intercooler up front and an AEM Series 2 engine management system that makes sure everything, including the 1,000cc injectors, cooperate with one another. It’s all very much the sort of stuff you’d expect from a car like Zhang’s, whose sole purpose is to browbeat whatever he’s sharing the road course with. Appointed as a dedicated track car after serving as a daily driver for a short period, Zhang goes on to say that there’s more to life than power and speed: “I wanted to make one sexy Evo.” For this he looked to renowned aero tuning firm Voltex and its Cyber Version widebody package, along with a bright-yellow color change. Despite the smattering of exterior modifications, Zhang failed to lose sight of the point of all of this, though,

>> Under the hood, 530whp is made possible by means of a Forced Performance turbo, a 2.4L stroker and 1,000cc/min AMS injectors, all tuned with the help of AEM’s Series 2 management.

which is to go a whole lot faster than what Mitsubishi’s accountants and engineers thought he should. By all accounts, 530whp was quite tolerable, but the road-going suspension left Zhang for want: “The handling was no good,” he says bluntly, “so I asked some friends and shops what to do.” All of that advice led to a completely revised suspension that’s based upon TEIN Super Racing coilovers and the company’s EDFC electronic damping control system. Front and rear sway bars from Whiteline were also added, as was just about every bushing the company’s ever made for the Evo chassis. It didn’t happen right away, but the suspension was ultimately dialed in, eventually meeting Zhang’s approval. The Evo’s stopping prowess was equally addressed, fitted with an AP Racing kit and Project Mu pads at each corner. All of this is recessed behind a set of WedsSport SA-60M wheels dutifully wrapped with Nitto NT01 rubber. Zhang has since transplanted himself from Seattle to Shanghai, but his Evo remains stateside waiting for its owner’s return. As it turns out, though, Zhang doesn’t have the sort of patience his Evo does and has already embarked on an entirely new project. “I came back to China, but I hated to part with my Banana Voltex Evo,” he says. “So, I built another [one], this time a Green Apple Voltex Evo.” Zhang goes on to explain how the new car will be even more powerful, more aggressive, and that once completed, will make up a small part of his newlyestablished, Shanghai-based race team, LC Motorsport. “I’ve already ordered the engine and the car is almost done,” he says of what he believes will result in the fastest Evo in China. “Building something like this is like [taking care] of a baby; you’ve got to be careful with every detail, and have a whole lot of money.” Must be nice, right? But we have to give Zhang props for having great taste and the ambition to build two track-ready Evos. Now, he just needs to either fly us out to Seattle or China so we can drive ‘em. Preferably China, Mr. Zhang…

(A~BO~MOON!)

60 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

TWO BROTHERS WHO SHARED A VISION OF COMBINING STANCE AND DRIFT WORDS Steve Enomoto PHOTOS Colin Waki hat the hell is A~Bo~Moon? It’s pretty typical to see many Japanese drift teams plastered with a ridiculous squad name, bask in their 15 minutes of fame on the track and then disappear into thin air. But for Team A~Bo~Moon, they present themselves in a way that tells us they’ll be around in the drifting scene for years to come. With their hardcore style and countless drifting awards, these boys have one thing that other lackluster drift teams lack—consistency! Before getting into the name A~Bo~Moon, here’s a little bit of history about the team. Remember those online videos of adolescent Japanese kids drifting their bicycles; sliding their rear tires and skillfully mimicking cars? A~Bo~Moon actually started off drifting bicycles! These junior high kids made up a large portion of the young drifting scene. They would religiously attend drift events as well as sneak out at night to go watch local drifters do their thing on mountain roads. Without the ability to drive a car, they studied the art of drifting by pure observation. They absorbed drifting any way they could. And when they turned 18, the bicycles were ditched and they finally got their driver licenses. It was game on! Brothers, Akinori (younger) and Tomonori (older) Satsukawa, could finally unleash their pent up passion for drifting and put together their own team. A new generation of skilled drifters was born. The name A~Bo~Moon is a derivative of Akinori’s nickname A~Bo, and the rest was just combined with Sailor Moon’s “Moon” aspect. To us, it hardly makes any sense but we must consider that many Japanese corporation names are made up in this kind of fashion.

The team quickly grew in their Hiroshima neighborhood, but in order to join the club, several boundaries had to be set to maintain their public image. One very important criterion was that everyone on the team is required to drive a blue R32 Skyline sedan. A perfect theme since R32 Skyline sedans were a great platform for drifting with plenty of power and aftermarket support. Currently, there are between ten and fifteen team members, each with their own styled version of the four-door Skyline. Most of the members came to battle with variants of Nissan’s inline six RB engine, whether RB20, RB25 or RB26 under their bonnets. By having this sort of consistency in chassis and engine, it became a strategic advantage when it came down to competing. They never ran out of parts or were forced to forfeit due to a breakdown since any component can simply be borrowed from each other’s rides. Another team prerequisite is that the vehicle must be set at a specific ride height and wheel stance. All team members must use 215-series tires with 17-inch rims for the front and must have pulled metal fenders (FRP is banned in competitions due to its fragile nature). The list keeps going, as each R32 has to be equipped with a full body kit >> All A~Bo~Moon must run RB motors. Here’s a look at Tan-Tan’s RB25.

and non-factory side mirrors. Moreover, each car is limited to one zip tie per fender and other body components are restricted, such as the method of securing side skirts. This ruling was determined after seeing countless body pieces destroyed resulting from too many zip ties; body panels would cling on to the car and eventually get captaincrunched underneath. With use of a single tie wrap, the odds of the bumper disengaging from the car during middrift and safely sliding off-course in one piece is increased. Besides the cars being consistent in their stance, body work and trademark blue paint, each person has the option to add metallic sparkles or their own flavor to the color as long as the base paint is used. With the team’s success and global recognition, Akinori and his brother Tomonori have become true pioneers and

advocates of stance combined with drift. For years, there has been much debate about stanced vehicles not being able to perform properly, but A~Bo~Moon was able to disprove that notion to the whole world.

It’ll be up for sale this month with the sticker price expected to be under $30,000.

IT’S A PARTY, AN FT-1 PARTY! There isn’t any groundbreaking news about Toyota’s FT-1 Coupe yet… But we finally had the chance to see the concept in person at a private party held during the New York International Auto Show. Toyota closed off a section of The Standard Hotel and put the FT-1 on display. The party had an old school feel with retro arcade games, while famed rapper, Biz Markie, was on the 1s and 2s. There’s still no word what motor or what plans are next for the possible Supra successor, but seeing this Formula One-inspired concept with our own eyes has us still dreaming about the possibilities today.

2015 HONDA FIT

GETTIN’ FIT! SAME AFFORDABLE PRICE WITH MORE SPACE, COMFORT AND VERSATILITY THAN EVER!

4. Design. When we first saw the new Fit, it almost looked bigger than the older model, but it’s actually a tad smaller. A more edgy design and elements like the front-grille and headlights make the car look bigger and wider than it actually is. 5. Powertrain. Nothing to throw a party about but the new Fit is up 13hp and 8 lb-ft of torque from the outgoing model thanks to larger diameter valves, raised compression and more. It’s peppy around town and not completely gutless on the highway. I had no problem passing cars, but people tell me I drive like a madman sometimes. 6. Shift. The new CVT tranny in the Fit is improved and can be fun to drive. It’s responsive and accelerates linearly. We don’t mind the optional paddle shifters, either. For the manual, a six-speed is now available instead of a five from the outgoing model. 7. Interior. We drove many of its competitors—the Fit doesn’t feel as cheap. The car is still relatively quiet and has a higher build quality than the rest. We dig the design of the dash, tach and speedo. Feature-wise, the standard rearview and optional lanewatch cameras are very helpful. Also standard is a 5" monitor on the base model while higher trim levels receive a 7" one. Don’t want to spend on the nav? Honda’s made it very easy to connect your iPhone to its head unit. WORDS Sam Du PHOTOS Courtesy of Honda he Fit isn’t exactly sporty, was never a huge tuning phenomenon here in the US and most people we know who own one probably just think it’s cute. But around the world, the Fit has a different perception. It’s a best-selling car in Japan and people of all ages and genders drive it. The Fit’s been used in a handful of racing scenarios as well—JDM tuners such as J’s Racing and Spoon have built time attack cars while here in the States, Honda has supported B-spec racing. While the number of people modifying Fits is small, the beauty behind these cars is that they’re very practical and affordable for everyday use. Honda is back with its third-generation Fit and we had the opportunity to take one out for a day in San Diego. They’ve been telling us it’s the “world’s best functional compact.” We’d have to agree as it’s easy to drive around town and the cargo space and legroom alone in this tiny car is remarkable. The number of features that come standard might also surprise you. As far as tuning-wise, we don’t expect it to be groundbreaking, but prepare to be surprised as Honda has some top tuners bringing modified Fits to SEMA this year. Word on the street is Bisimoto will be building one—expect a lot of horsepower! But if you’re honestly thinking about gettin’ Fit, we’ve outlined seven important reasons why this car might “Fit” your everyday lifestyle: 1. Affordability. The new Fit starts at $15,525. What other new car can you pick up for that price that’s as reliable, functional and cool as this? 2. Fuel Economy. Most Fit buyers worry about fuel economy over power. The new Fit has better numbers than the previous gen thanks to a redesigned head with larger valves. The ECU is also modified to retard timing at low speeds and more aggressive at higher RPM. 3. Storage. Easily one of the best advantages of the Fit. The height of the car is the same as the outgoing model and it’s only 0.3" wider. Cabin storage and legroom are both bigger. Need to pack a surfboard? No problem!

OUR BEST OF SHOW!

>> Major props to Richard Fisher and his BRZ. SNOW DAY WORDS & PHOTOS Sam Du

SCENE: TUNER GALLERIA—DONALD E. STEPHENS CONVENTION CENTER; ROSEMONT, IL

I

’ve never attended the Tuner Galleria car show, let alone been in the city of Chicago. But judging from media coverage I’ve seen over the last four years, plus all the praise from friends who have gone before, I was extremely excited for this year’s event. So a couple days before showtime, I packed a lightweight duffel bag and off to the Windy City I went! Now, remember that I’m a Southern California boy so I was not prepared for the weather that ensued. For the entire weekend, the temperature never rose above 30-degrees and a snowstorm blanketed the city on the afternoon of the show. I was in pain the entire time I was there—ears and feet frozen, nose runny and all. But despite the shitty weather, Chicago enthusiasts showed me what’s up! The halls of Donald E. Stephens Convention Center were packed all day with spectators from all over the Midwest. These guys are so hardcore most of the display cars drove home in the snow once the show was over! But back to the show, Tuner Galleria had everything there: from the first Rocket Bunny-kitted BRZ in Chicago to nostalgic Datsuns and big-money Euros. Rain, sleet or snow, Windy City locals will not miss the annual Tuner Galleria car show—and now I understand why!

THERE’S A REASON WHY THIS OLD BMW IS HERE—A HONDA F20 SWAP! WORDS BK Nakadashi PHOTOS Matt Jones t’s tough to imagine an automotive landscape without a BMW 2002 to kick-start the compact sports-sedan movement. BMW’s New Class (or Neue Klasse, if you sprechen sie Deutsch) arrived after a decade of expensive cars no one bought (like the 507 sports car) and microcars that offered little profit margin (like the licensed Isetta). The New Class was BMW’s best hope for survival; it arrived in 1962 as a 1,500cc sedan with unit-body construction, fully independent suspension featuring MacPherson struts in front and a semi-trailing-arm

I

80 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

arrangement in the rear, front disc brakes and a SOHC inline Four. It was proof that you could have fun without having to sacrifice passenger room or quality. (Fuel injection arrived as an option in 1972, a full decade before most car companies thought about getting out of carburetors altogether.) Put it all together and that sounds like a fairly modern specification, but remember, BMW did this when TVs were black-and-white, Kennedy was still president and WWII was only a little more distant for them than 9/11 is for us. New models and upgrades followed slowly as BMW climbed out of its financial hole on the success of the New Class. A variety of two-doors followed, as did a 1,990cc variant of BMW’s M10 engine; the 2002 model, launched in 1966, sold

nearly 850,000 copies alone worldwide in the next decade, out of more than 1.2 million New Class BMWs. The 2002 put BMW on the map and instantly became the world prototype for a small, quality-built, technologically-advanced small sedan. (Datsun’s 510 sedan is an excellent case in point.) 2002s were even available with turbocharged two-liter Fours before, for example the '73 Turbo. It was Europe’s first turbocharged production car (beating even Porsche and Saab to the punch), good for 170hp from its KKK turbo. So, seeing a blown Four under the hood of a BMW 2002 isn’t unusual. Seeing a Honda engine under that reverse-opening hood, however, is an eyebrow-raiser. Recall that at the turn of the millennium, Honda gave us the F20C: all-aluminum

construction, 11.7:1 compression, 51-degree valve angle, heat-treated and surface-carburized forged alloy crank and connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons with short skirts, the engine’s five main bearings incorporated into a single girdle for strength, an 8,300rpm peak and a 9000rpm redline are among the specs. More impressive: a naturally-aspirated 120hp per liter, or converted to English measure, nearly two horsepower per cubic inch. Without boost, Honda’s naturallyaspirated revver made 70 more horses than BMW’s blown block.

HONDA AND BMW: PARALLELS Honda and BMW might not be such a jarring blend after all: the details differ, but the broad strokes of these companies’ histories are strangely parallel. Both outfits started by building motorcycles as a result of wartime happenstance: BMW in 1923 after the Treaty of Versailles made it all but impossible for them to continue building aircraft, and half a decade of building train brakes saw the outfit’s fortunes flounder; Honda in 1946 after Soichiro Honda salvaged his war- and earthquake-ravaged piston-ring works to Toyota for working capital. Honda’s first 50cc motorized bicycles were powered by war-surplus radio generators, with their first bespoke motorcycles coming in 1949. Both became major players in the car-building world in the '60s: BMW for reasons discussed above, Honda expanding into light trucks and sports cars as it sought to find a foothold in a small but soon-to-grow four-wheeled market at home. Both expanded quickly: BMW became a force in the late 1960s and moved from strength to strength in the '70s, while Honda’s success came a decade later with the Civic and, eventually, the Accord. And of course, both companies remained independent, avoiding proposed mergers for financial reasons (the BMW board considered selling to Mercedes-Benz in the early '60s) or political ones (the Japanese Diet declaring that smaller industrial concerns should merge with larger ones to avoid Western takeover, which is how Prince was absorbed by Nissan and Hino by Toyota). Today, through a successful course of blending technology, comfort and relative affordability, both the 3-series BMW (a direct descendant of the 2002) and the Accord are the standard-bearers in their respective classes.

Now, drop the S2000’s power into a car that’s some 700 pounds lighter, as a 2002 is compared to the Honda; suddenly that power gets a lot snappier. Mount a turbo onto the hardworking F20C and suddenly you’re in another stratosphere. With ten pounds of boost, stock internals, stock compression, a stock Honda 6-speed trans and only a handful of tweaks, like larger throttle bodies, fuel rails, injectors and an AEM computer, owner Max Polishchuk (who also owns CAtuned Motorsports, a BMW-friendly shop in Sacramento, CA), claims 404 horsepower at the wheels. “And we’re not done,” he tells us. Do the math: that’s near enough to five pounds per horsepower for our liking. But...why a Honda F20C? BMW makes plenty of good engines; witness the late-'80s M3’s S14 inline Four, or better yet the S65 V8 seen in the last generation of M3s. The answer is straightforward enough: “We have loved BMWs for a long time,” Max tells us. “Even as kids. But we have built Hondas and have had many S2000s. We joked for years

82 SUPER STREET AUGUST 2014

about stuffing one into a classic car. The BMW S14 is a great classic racing motor but a used motor needing a rebuild is right around $3,000. Rebuild parts are very expensive, and a typical rebuild consumes about 40 hours. Add up the parts and labor and it comes out to be a lot of money with not a lot of power. The F20C offers a great horsepower-to-weight ratio, as well as cheap power.” Curiously, the holdup is with the rear, which is currently a stock 3.91-opengeared early '80s BMW 320i rear that bolts right into the 2002. “We’ve had it up to 500 horsepower,” Max says, “but the differential was gone after 10 passes. We are in the process of machining out the internal case diameter to accept heavy-duty internals from the E30 [the 1982-1994 generation of 3-series BMW]. That should handle well above 650hp.” It’s such an interesting idea that CAtuned sells a conversion kit with customfabricated mounts; they’ve performed three of these operations in-house, including theirs, but have sold a greater number abroad, to Canada, the UK and Germany. Fitting the six-speed Honda ‘box required a newly-fabricated transmission tunnel. And any time you’re going to start cutting up a unit-body floor, more than tripling the horsepower it was designed to harness, it’s always a good idea to reinforce things here and there. “The subframes were solid, but we did add some support in various spots. There’s a custom strut bar done like a race cage in the trunk; the battery has been relocated there too, for better weight distribution.” Otherwise, it’s really a minimalist creation. The front brakes have 11-inch rotors and Wilwood four-piston calipers now, because there’s no way the stock rotors would be able to handle that kind of power in a panic, but the rear brakes are still drums for the moment. The interior has improved seating and steering (and shifting, obviously, thanks to the new transmission), but the stereo is a simple Pioneer indash CD player with Kicker speakers. Those American park-bench bumpers have been brought closer to the body than the thin stock chrome Euro bumpers ever were, but the red paint is deliberately unfinished; the wheels look massive, yet are
