night hawks
thomas university sof The 2016 Thomas University softball schedule has been released by head coach Bill Wilson, as the Lady Night Hawks will be looking to improve up last year’s stellar 35-13 record. TU will participate two tournaments including the RU Eagles Tournament (Feb. 12-13 in Waleska, Ga.) and the Gulf Coast Invitational (March 4-6 in Gulf Shores, Ala.). The Lady Night Hawks 52-game slate is highlighted by Sun Conference doubleheaders with Keiser, St. Thomas, USCB, Warner and Southeastern to be played at Armory Field in Thomasville. The team will have just two conference, road doubleheaders, which will be played against the likes of Webber International and Ave Maria. Thomas University’s schedule includes teams from Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Michigan, Ohio and Alabama. While the Lady Night Hawks do not have many road games, the team will close out the regular season with four consecutive TSC matches away from home in Babson Park, Fla., and Ave Maria, Fla. Thomas had a memorable season in 2015, finishing 22 games over the .500 mark and 23rd in the final NAIA rankings. The Lady Night Hawks, despite facing a challenging schedule, should have another quality opportunity to finish nationally ranked in 2016.

St. Thomas (23) was picked fifth, followed by Warner (18), Webber International (15) and Keiser (9). The Fire advanced to the NAIA Opening Round and were ranked 19th in the final national poll. The Breakdown: In 2015, Truett-McConnell had a struggling season where they made the shift from an older, more experienced team to a youthful squad. The Bears are looking to turn the tide as they picked up key victories over Tennessee Wesleyan, Tennessee Temple, Bluefield (Va.), Bryan (Tenn.), Milligan and Columbia (S.C.). Last season, the Bears fell to Thomas in both meetings losing 4-0 on February 13 and 7-2 on February 14.

Coach: Kat Ihlenburg | 2015 Record: 37-16 The Breakdown: The Georgia Gwinnett softball team captured its first postseason championship with last year’s Association of Independent Institutions title in Lawrenceville. All the work since then has been focused on Opening Day, which comes Feb. 5, and the opportunities that lie ahead for the rest of the 2016 season. In early January, the Grizzlies found out they’ve been ranked preseason No. 21 in the NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll for the 2016 season. The ranking matches the position the team reached heading into last year’s NAIA Opening Round after claiming its 2015 conference title. The Grizzlies will once again be looking to defend their home turf, with 36 regular season games and, for the third straight year, the A.I.I. tournament championship, scheduled to be played at the Grizzly Softball Complex in Lawrenceville. Georgia Gwinnett is a terrific 44-11 on its home field since the ballpark opened in April of 2013. Beyke, a senior right-handed pitcher from Franklin, Tenn., Fields, a senior catcher from Elk Grove, Calif., and Haley Thompson, a senior infielder from Nicholson, Ga., are returning All-A.I.I. First Team selections for GGC. Four additional second-team all-conference returners help anchor the Grizzly squad in pitcher Katie Lange, infielder Chelsi Palazzo and outfielders Tori Heinemann and Alyssa Hathcoat.

Coach: David Dews | 2015 Record: 53-8 (25-3 Mid-South Conference) The Breakdown: After finishing as the NAIA national runner-up last season, the Blue Raiders have tough slate for the upcoming 2016 season. The preseason ranked No. 2 Blue Raiders look to defend their Mid-South Conference title as they were selected the preseason favorite. Lindsey Wilson received 47 total votes including five out of the eight possible first place votes. Thomas and LWC met three times in the 2015 season with the Blue Raiders taking all three games. On February 22, 2015, LWC defeated the Lady Night Hawks in Thomasville 3-1 and 6-3. A week later, LWC defeated Thomas 5-4 at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. Five Blue Raiders earned 2015 NAIA All-American honors. Seniors Amanda Trampe and Chelsea Showers were named First Team All-Americans, Jordan Hood and Casey Bryan were named to the Second Team, and Jenna Firestein earned Honorable Mention honors. After becoming the first First Team All-American in program history in 2014, Trampe again was named a First Team selection in 2015.

@RU_Eagles
Coach: Jade Geuther | 2015 Record: 28-19 (17-3 Appalachian Athletic Conf.) The Breakdown: The Lady Eagles are looking to start fresh in 2016 under first year head coach Jade Geuther. Former head coach Glen Crawford departed from Waleska in July 2015 to become the new head coach at NCAA II Peach Belt Conference member Lander University. In 2015, Reinhardt was led by Randi Wimpy who was named the NFCA NAIA Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year. Wimpy, an NAIA and NFCA First Team All-American, had a tremendous junior season for the Lady Eagles. The reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Wimpy finished fifth in the country in slugging percentage with a .912 mark. Her 57 RBIs ranked 22nd in the country as well. Wimpy paced the Lady Eagles with a batting average of .447 with 16 doubles, 11 home runs, 53 runs scored, 42 walks, and a phenomenal .575 on-base percentage. The Cartersville, Ga., native is a first-time honoree for this award. The Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year award is presented annually to the top catcher from an NFCA member institution in each of the following divisions: NCAA (Divisions I, II and III), NAIA, NJCAA (Divisions I, II and III), Cal JC, NWAC and high school. Thomas defeated Reinhardt in all four of their meetings in 2015, twice in Thomasville and twice at the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic Tournament in Columbus, Ga.
Georgetown College February 12, 2016 | 5:00 p.m. | Waleska, Ga.
@GCAthletics
Coach: Thomas Thornton | 2015 Record: 18-18 (13-13 Mid-South Conference) The Breakdown: Georgetown College softball was recently tabbed preseason third in the Mid-South Conference behind nationally ranked Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville University. The Tigers came off the 2014 national tournament appearance with a rude awaking of 16 games cancelled for snow and inclement weather. Once play began, GC was electric from the plate through 18 games with 193 runs on 184 RBIs and 33 home runs. Shelby Engle highlighted her junior season by breaking the single-season home run record in that span. She had 11 round trips, the previous record was nine. The Tigers struggled after opening April with a 22-4 and 11-3 doubleheader sweep of Union College. They managed just 70 runs in the remaining 18 games to finish 18-18 in head coach Thomas Thornton’s 13th season. Their bid to rally out of the loser’s bracket was thwarted by rival Campbellsville. Two Tigers were named All MSC First Team – freshman Chaselyn Allgeier and Engle. Rachel Simms, Emily Snow, Cassidy Taylor and Sandy Young were all named to the second team. Taylor is the only one GC lost to graduation out of that bunch. Georgetown and Thomas did not face each other in the 2015 season.
Taylor University February 13, 2016 | 9:00 a.m. | Waleska, Ga.
@TaylorTrojans
Coach: Brad Bowser | 2015 Record: 36-16 (26-8 Crossroads League) The Breakdown: The Trojans have a very touch schedule to open the 2016 slate as they head to the Reinhardt University Inviational in early February. As the defending Crossroads League Champions, Taylor looks to repeat their historical performance from 2015. The Trojans went 3-1 against Sun Conference opponents in 2015, losing their season opener to Webber International 10-5. In 2015, Davis Carter and Alex Lovelace were named to the All-Crossroads League Team, while Lauren Ehle earned Honorable-Mention honors. Carter and Lovelace also received recognition by the NFCA as first team performers in the Great Lakes Region. The duo look to guide Taylor to another NAIA national tournament appearance in 2016. Taylor and Thomas did not face each other in the 2015 season.

2016 opponents Tennessee Wesleyan College February 13, 2016 | 1:00 p.m. | Waleska, Ga.
@TWCBulldogs
Coach: Toby Brooks | 2015 Record: 31-9 (16-4 Appalachian Athletic Conf.) The Breakdown: The Bulldogs look to have a repeat of last year’s success as they reach the NAIA national tournament as a representative from the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The 2015 AAC champions were eliminated in the double-elimination format tournament losing to eventual and two-time defending NAIA champion Auburn-Montgomery (3-0) and Georgia Gwinnett (1-0) in eight innings. Coach Brooks expects his squad to continue its growth as they picked up key victories over No. 3 Reinhardt, Truett-McConnell, Union College, Milligan, Bluefield (Va.), Talladega, and Point. Tennessee Wesleyan and Thomas did not face each other in the 2015 season.
Indiana University Southeast February 18, 2016 | 1:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m. | Thomasville, Ga.
@IUSAthletics
