STRUCTURES with rebecca ruben
About tensile structure THe task was to find tensile structures around us and the ways in which they are used .Like lattice , shade space division , installations etc .Different forms possible and forms used .
exploring possibilities First one is the initial idea that i had of the flight of the birds through the pigeon path .Then, we have a installations with bird forms at different levels next is a shade structure plus a lattice which integrets finally showcasing flight .Then, a praposal for street venders ,to use there shade as a storage device too. Then a tent idea .
motion and structure Once Flight of the bird was finalized ,We were asked to structurally figure out how the structure stood. We could also create the movement at each levels. The idea was to make the wings movable and suspend them in appropriate heights .Different techniques were tried to achieve this as shown. Collapsability in the structure was also looked into .
form exploration Abstraction of a bird into a shade providing structure was taken ahead in this exploration.Different possibilities like kite ,bird feet, bird wing were explored. We also kept in mind the flight that ,it neededto achive .
structural exploration Exploration included cantilever structures or canopy ,Already existing suspended structures , grounded mast and pole system.
self standing
Since it was a part of the structure course , We decided to make it self standing. That meant it should be independent of the ground and other structures around it .We also tried to incorporate the tensile property of the textile .
exploration Explorations for a self standing Canopy structure .
under construction
Finally we came up with a cantilever structure which is self standing and has a form of a bird . SCALE: 1 : 5
We created three contact points and then gave external support in front to make it more stable .
Provisions made for the cable to pass through ,to stretch the tensile structure.
Note for rebecca ruben, First of all,I would like to say,It was a great experience to finally bring something out of the sheets . During the course the exercise to study and find out other possibilities for a tensile structure was very helpful and helped us to understand what already exists out there. Then ,taking a concept and detailing it out was the most crucial part . Figuring out the scale and how it is subjective was also useful information that you shared with us . The most challenging part was to make a self standing structure , it required a trial and error method. Even though the structure stood when we made a scaled down model, it was hard to achive that at the scale of the prototype .There was a lot of practical learning from the course about structure ,And how they stand .It would have been great if the theory could also support the course ,Even though we had one ,It wasn't bridging the gap. Thankyou, Thommen P.S:This documentation is incomplete.Shall sent you the final product photographs in a days time.
