B

oundary Country is where you’ll find the 49th parallel that divides the nations of Canada and the United States. The first inhabitants of Boundary Country were the First Nations people, who have lived here since recorded time. Then, about 150 years ago, the gold rush attracted pioneers and prospectors, lured here with promises of fertile land, copper and gold. Today, this land is rich in history, culture, and stories. It’s calling your name. Come experience what we were and what we’ve become.

Christina Lake has tales that date back hundreds of years, with new stories told each year by vacationing families. Camp out or rent a cabin in the communities of Beaverdell,

Westbridge and Bridesville. It’s easy to imagine what it was like hundreds of years ago, before the pioneers first came here. The Kettle River was the site of one of Canada’s earliest gold rushes. Our Story

Getting Here

Columbia and Western and Kettle Valley Rail Trails, part of the Great Trail (formerly the Trans Canada Trail)—and on a First Nations Trail, where the Dewdney Trail was later built. Our farmers discovered these fertile lands over a century and a half ago. Today you can taste your way through farmers’ markets, orchards, dairies, flour mills and fall fairs. Thanks to

lots of sunshine, we grow some of the tastiest fruits and vegetables around.

Over the last 200 years many intrepid explorers have visited Christina Lake and the surrounding area. Christina Lake was part of the region inhabited by the Sinixt First Nations, also known as the Arrow Lakes People. They were an Interior Salish people whose territory stretched roughly from the Monashees to Kootenay Lake, from Revelstoke to north-east Washington. Age-old pictographs are at several places along the north-east lakeshore – evidence of these first inhabitants and visiting tribes. They offer a tantalizing glimpse into our past. Visitors and locals alike can download the free Christina Lake Insider, a mobile app where you can explore Christina Lake, gain points and collect rewards. Rock Creek In 1859, gold put ROCK CREEK on the map, but it’s the wealth of outdoor recreation that keeps people coming back. Bolstered by golden dreams and heartened by tales of riches, thousands of miners created a rollicking frontier town. Whispers of those heady gold rush days are still evident on the now quiet streets of Rock Creek, where the Crowsnest Highway intersects with Highway 33. Hike, bike, horseback ride, snowshoe or cross-country ski on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail (KVR), part of Canada’s iconic Great Trail. Between the Kettle River, Rock Creek, and Conkle Lake you’ll find plenty of craggy shoreline

where you can drop in a line. Bring your fishing gear and see what’s biting. Catch and release is practiced in this area, so check regulations online before you go. One of the best swimming holes in Boundary Country is at the Kettle River Recreation Area, just outside of town. Pitch your tent beneath towering Ponderosa pines. You’ll fall asleep with the scent of summer bunchgrass tickling your nose. Private campgrounds and RV resorts and two provincial recreation areas near town provide lots of space to sleep under a blanket of stars near Rock Creek.

Rock Creek is nestled in the rolling hills of Boundary Country

Westbridge WESTBRIDGE is the perfect spot for a picnic or an outdoor adventure vacation. It’s surrounded by lush green forests and open meadows. Take in the waves of colourful wildflowers in the spring. Come again in the fall and experience the reds and yellows of larch and poplar trees. There’s plenty of nature to go around, so bring your camera. Bear, deer and moose are often found grazing along the highway. Westbridge is a small, unincorporated area just 13.5 km (8.4 mi) north of Rock Creek and 35 km (22 mi) south of Beaverdell on Highway 33. Camping is available at several parks in the area, as well as a ranch house stay.

This wildlife rich area is located near Grand Forks and Christina Lake. These wide-open spaces are perfect for

hiking and biking. Watch for big horn sheep, elk, and deer roaming through the semi-arid grasslands. Ride single-track mountain bike trails or search for hidden geo-caches. Plan on sleeping elsewhere as this is one of the few parks in Boundary Country that does not permit overnight camping.

from today’s busy world. Drive or hike to the wilderness campsites and enjoy your time on the relaxing pocket beaches. This beautiful recreation site near Grand Forks has a semi-open campsite great for overnight and group camping. Bluejoint serves as a staging area and accesses a network of ATV trails in the area. Cascade Falls near Christina Lake Provincial Park

Waterfalls

Take a hike around Boundary Creek Falls, halfway between Midway and Greenwood. About 31 m (100 ft) upstream from the falls is the remains of an old dam that once generated power for Greenwood. Go exploring around the small canyon and view the 12 m (40 ft) falls from the canyon rim. Cascade Falls is another great area to explore. It is located just south of Christina Lake and slightly north of the Canada/USA border. This 31 m (100ft) cascading waterfall has quite a history behind it. Long ago it was a meeting place and trading ground for First Nations people and a great source for fishing. In the early 1900s a state-of-the-art hydro project was built here. It was one of the very first locations to pioneer 3-phase 60-cycle alternating current generators and was operational until 1919. It was based on Nikola Tesla’s revolutionary model of alternating current. It is said this project was what finally settled a rivalry between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison on the AC/DC debate. Today you may still find some remnants of the old plant as you explore the beauty of this area. Fisherman Creek Falls is located not far from Grand Forks right off the Great Trail. Travel several kms northwest either by foot or bike and just before the junction of the Fisherman Creek Forest Service Road there is a cool and shady path to the left. Follow your ears until you hear the falls. The Fisherman Creek Tunnel and old railway bunkhouse is not far past this point.

Community Parks

There are several community parks in Boundary Country. Each of our parks is uniquely different. Explore the great slagheaps and Hell’s Bells at Greenwood’s Lotzkar Memorial Park or have a picnic and let the kids play in the playground at Lion’s Park. Take an evening stroll along Midway’s Riverfront Park. Camping is available in a serene setting on the river with amenities nearby, and some of the most amazing bathrooms around! The Grand Forks City Park is right beside the river and has a spray park, playground, BMX track and a campground. Sway along to Music in the Park at Grand Forks’ Gyro Park on a Wednesday night in summer. Christina Lake hosts an extensive outdoor recreation park including baseball diamonds, children’s play and Bike Pump Park, tennis courts, outdoor exercise park, and new pickle ball courts, with tournaments throughout the summer. 48 | Boundary Country | boundarybc.com | #BoundaryCountry

Taking a break on the KVR in Midway

T

he Kettle Valley Rail Trail (KVR) is an immersive experience weaving a historical path through Boundary Country. Through the combination of aboriginal culture, railway history, and natural beauty, the KVR connects rural communities and presents a variety of farm flavours, folklores, and local pastimes. From rugged mountain passes to tranquil river valleys, the KVR sweeps you across a vast and ever changing landscape. The KVR and the Columbia and Western Railway (C&W) meet at Midway and now form a 240 km (149 mi) section of the Great Trail (GT), formerly Trans Canada Trail. The GT follows the KVR from McCulloch downhill to Carmi and Beaverdell along the West Kettle River. As it nears Westbridge it meets the Kettle River, following the Kettle River to Midway. From Midway it climbs gradually to Greenwood on an easy gradient. Diverse landscapes merge with one another as you hike or bike along the trail. Tranquil river shores meet up with ancient grasslands, ranchlands, mountains and communities. At Midway, the KVR portion of the trail ends and the C&W begins. There are several communities and campgrounds along the way. It is 15 km (9 mi) from Midway (km 0) to Greenwood. Eholt is at km 28 (17 mi), Grand Forks at km 49 (30 mi) and Christina Lake at the end of the trail.

There are campgrounds at Midway, Grand Forks, and Christina Lake. Take a day trip or spend the night camping under the stars. The GT, KVR, and C&W offer a myriad of experiences for explorers of all ages and agility. These trails are best experienced on 2.4 inch (60 mm) tires. For a great rail trail experience, bring the family to ride the Kettle River Heritage Trail from Grand Forks to Cascade West. The first part of the trail through Grand Forks, and the next 5 km (3 mi) to Whitehall Road is paved. This C&W section is approximately 18 km (11 mi) in total and follows along the Kettle River. This trail has a new surface and is great for any kind of bike. For a list of suggested hikes and rides along our rail trails visit boundarybc.com and bcrailtrails.com. hether you’re riding atop your horse or bike, hiking, snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing, there are boundless trails for you to discover. Be prepared for ageless landscapes through valleys, along river shores and through forests of Ponderosa pine, spruce, and fir. There are over 1,000 km (620 mi) of all types of trails that link communities from Christina Lake to Beaverdell. This is cowboy country where some of the best views you can have are from high in the saddle! Working ranches dot the area, and several offer guided trail rides along the GT and KVR. You’ll ride by the Kettle River, and cross rolling ranges of native bunchgrass and wildflower-strewn meadows. Explore our communities as you ride our trails. Sturdy bikes and mountain bike tires 1.4 – 1.5 in (35 – 38 mm) wide are highly recommended. There are rough washboard sections, as well as deep sand. Gloves are recommended as many a rider has lost their balance on the soft sand. Papa Harpold, Ripper, Fisherman-Neff, Midway, and the historic Dewdney Trail are only a few of

the thrilling trails found in Boundary Country. There are several services in Boundary Country for those who love to cycle. There are guided tours where your guide rides with you and informs you about the area. There’s a service that will pick up you and your bicycle and take you where you want to go, and another that assists you with planning your cycling adventure and will meet up with you at the end of the ride and transfer you to your chosen accommodation. Hiking our trails can be a rigorous workout or a gentle stroll. Head to the hills to enjoy the hiking trails, most of which have gentle inclines. There is even a paved 5 km (3.2 mi) accessible trail in Grand Forks. Our communities are the perfect place to take a stroll after dinner. Gather the kids for a walk by the river. Stretch your legs and lift your spirits on an easy outdoor walk. Just ask any local, they’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. In the winter, strap on your cross-country skis or snowshoes and experience Boundary Country in a totally new way. Ask at our Visitor Centres for the best trails for winter exploration. Get out on the water and enjoy a paddle along the shores or get in some waterskiing, sea-dooing, tubing and wakeboarding. When everyone is played out you can watch the sun set from the bow of your boat. The marina at Christina Lake has boat rentals as well as watersport rentals to suit your needs. Jewel Lake, outside of Greenwood is a motor restricted lake (up to 10 HP only). You can peacefully paddle your kayak or canoe for hours undisturbed. Take your time and explore every nook and cranny. You can also canoe and kayak the Kettle River and put out at beautiful Westbridge. The Granby River in the spring is where expert kayakers navigate the rapids at the Staircase and S-Curves. Feel the spray on your face as your heart races. There’s some major paddling to be done here. For something less heart pounding, put in on the lower reaches of the Granby and Kettle Rivers. The water there is as gentle as the breeze. For those who prefer the fine sport of fishing, you can

Then it’s time to choose between three routes. Head north to the Shuswap, travel south down the Okanagan Corridor or head back for more fun times in Boundary Country. From Alberta, take Hwy 1 to Revelstoke. From here you can access Boundary Country on the Boundary Monashee Road Trip. Drive south on Hwy 23 to Nakusp
