A Message From RIH Foundation Chair Alan Gozda It has been an action packed year at the Foundation, with new staff members, new events and new supporters. Heidi and her team worked hard to find new ways to raise even more funds for our hospital. They reenergized the Foundation Gala, renaming it The Royal Affair. The event raised $175,000 in the first two years alone! The most encouraging part was that our donors generously donated over $2.3 million in support of improving health care at RIH – the highest amount in over five years! Bringing our community and health care team together has been instrumental to the success over the last year. Whether through MiniMED educational seminars, donor receptions or community events, doctors are helping to engage the community in our hospital. Over 40 doctors attended the Royal Affair this year, where they were able to see Kamloopsians show their support for our hospital and medical staff. As with any board of directors, change is inevitable. Three board members will be moving on. Dr. Jim Bilbey, our longest serving board member, has served for seven years—the maximum time a director is allowed to serve. Dr. Bilbey brought his medical background to the board and we thank him for all his years of support. Another long-standing board member, John Broadway, has decided to not only retire from the Foundation, but also professionally from his law practice. John has given us great support over the years and we wish him the best as he moves on to the next stage of his life. And, finally, Robyn Holling will be moving from the Foundation board to the society, but we hope to get her back on the board soon. Well, there you have it Kamloops – a year of change and accomplishment. Thank you to Heidi and her team for their hard work and dedication. Thank you to everyone in the community who supports our efforts to provide patients with excellent care at RIH. And, a special thank you to the RIH Foundation directors, a dedicated group of individuals who volunteer their time on behalf of all of us. I am truly blessed to have such a strong team. ooking forward to another successful year ahead. L All the best, Alan

A Message from RIH Foundation CEO Heidi Coleman Welcome to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation’s new publication, Community Connection, previously titled the Annual Report. We decided it was time to revise the report to better reflect our commitment to keeping you–our donors and community members—informed with current information on what’s new in the hospital and how the generosity of our community is changing the lives of our patients for the better. This last year has been very exciting for us as we continue to engage with and connect our donors to our health–care team and areas of the hospital that matter most to them. Through these connections, we are building a strong foundation of support, which results in more up–to–date equipment and patient care excellence. This upcoming year, we’re looking forward to working with our community to make more vital improvements to our hospital. Our fundraising efforts will be particularly focused on our $2.5–million campaign to equip a new Operating Room at RIH. Our Pediatrics department will continue to benefit from ongoing community support and there is always a need for updated equipment throughout the hospital. This is how we can attract and retain top medical talent to our hospital. Additionally, I am thrilled that we are launching a new event this October, Dancing Like the Stars, to raise funds for women’s breast health at RIH. Royal Inland Hospital is essential to our community. I hope you enjoy reading more about the connections we are making in support of our hospital. With gratitude, Heidi

Donor Story: Variety - A Children’s Charity
Variety Gives RIH’s Smallest Patients the Best Start at Life We were thrilled when we received news that Variety — The Children’s Charity would be giving the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and labour and delivery departments a grant for $279,027. As a level 2B nursery, premature infants as young as 30 weeks gestation are offered specialized care by RIH’s highly skilled team of medical professionals right here in Kamloops. Last year, over 230 babies were admitted and treated in the NICU, and many more required short–term observation in the NICU before joining their mothers in the maternity department. Variety has a long and rich history of helping families, communities and organizations throughout B.C. Their mission is to inspire hope, enrich lives and build a better future for children who have special needs. Because of Variety’s generosity, the more than 1,200 infants born at RIH every year—and those who are admitted to the NICU—will have access to the most advanced and specialized care available. Over the years, Variety has given the RIH Foundation more than $1.1 million. This has had an incredible impact on the young patients and medical professionals at RIH. We are so grateful for their continued support of our hospital.

Donor Story: Ken Lepin
Ken Lepin Gives Lab Latest Tools of the Trade Last winter, the pathology department was thrilled to learn that they would receive not one, but two critical pieces of equipment that had been on their wish list for some time—a testing instrument for C. difficile* (and other pathogens) and a staining instrument used for detecting cancer. Ken Lepin has been an avid supporter of the Foundation for more than 25 years and, after touring the lab and speaking with pathologists Dr. Steele and Dr. James, he was inspired to give $152,000—enough to purchase these pieces of equipment that, as he would say, give the staff the best tools to get the job done efficiently. Ken saw firsthand the amazing work that takes place in the lab each day and the challenges that come with working with older equipment. He described the lab and its staff as “a hidden but untold critical link in the chain of patient care and recovery” and knew that purchasing these pieces of equipment would make a huge difference not only in the lab, but in the lives of patients. With these new instruments, the turnaround time for results is optimized. In the case of C. difficile, early detection helps to minimize the exposure of patients and health–care workers to the bacterium. With both C. difficile and cancer, early detection greatly increases the chances for successful treatment. To date, Mr. Lepin has given over $450,000 to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. We want to thank him for his generosity over the past 25 years and for the impact he is making on patient care at RIH.
“[The lab and its staff are] a hidden but critical link in the chain of patient care and recovery.” — Ken Lepin
Ken Lepin with Dr. Lisa Steele, Pathologist
Dr. Gerry James, Department Head of Pathology, explains: “The new immunostainer is clearly superior to our older stainer. It is very reliable and this results in a consistent and faster turnaround time, especially in critical cases requiring a rapid and accurate answer for our patients”.
* Clostridium difficile, commonly called C. difficile, is a bacterium that causes serious intestinal conditions. The reported incidence of healthcare-associated C. difficile infection in North America has risen over the last decade. It is associated with increased morbidity and mortality.

A Royal Affair In 2011, the RIH Foundation started a gala dinner as part of out fundraising campaign. Last year, however, we asked ourselves, “What can we do differently?” We decided to move away from the traditional gala format to create a new experience—unlike anything Kamloops had ever seen—which we called the “Royal Affair.” Mystery and intrigue was our approach—the secret location was only revealed to guests on the morning of the event. The most frequent question we received was, “What should I wear?!” Our evening was a resounding success and had the whole city buzzing! It became Kamloops’ best kept secret. The mystery continued with our second Royal Affair this past June. We were overwhelmed with the support of the community and tickets sold out simply from the support of the previous year’s attendees and through word of mouth. Once again, guests were told to call in on the day of the event for the revealing of the mystery location, the former Rona building. After entering this once empty space through a tunnel of lights and circus–theme music, guests stepped into a room transformed into a “sexy circus” experience. Dazzling lights and flowing fabric adorned the room. Live artists were abound, creating a variety of masterpieces for the highest bidders. Acrobats and fire dancers were just some of the outstanding performers throughout the evening. Photo credit: Aspect Arts Photography
The Royal Affair raised a tremendous $100,000 which will go towards equipping the new Operating Room. We are most grateful to the support of our community and to the dedicated committee members who put in countless hours to ensure the evening would be a one-of-a-kind experience for our guests. What will next year bring…?

Community Events South Central Trucking and Industry Charity Golf Tournament This past May marked the 17th annual SCT&I Charity Golf Tournament and proved once again to be another success with an astounding $90,000 raised to help equip the new operating room at RIH. This tournament always guarantees a full day of fun and excitement, all while supporting a great cause. The RIH Foundation is very grateful to the tournament’s steering committee for its outstanding dedication and support. Committee members included: Brent Ashby, Stella Black, Dominic Carbonette, Ron Marshall, Eric Davis, Tom McGowan, Pat Nichol, Kevin Phillips, Ron Popove, Byron Sample, Bob Selman, High Sutherland and Spencer Woodland. We look forward to more remarkable tournaments in the years to come.
Teck Highland Valley Copper Since 1988, Teck Highland Valley Copper Mine has been supporting patient care at RIH through a variety of fundraising activities and events including their Mining for Miracles campaign, the Highland Valley Open House and both a summer and winter fishing derby. Now in its nineth year, the annual Trojan Pond Ice Fishing Tournament is a fun-filled day where people of all ages can enjoy fun winter activities including bobsledding, ice bowling and ice fishing. In 2013 alone, over $54,000 was raised by Highland Valley staff, families and supporters to help ensure health–care excellence at RIH.
McHappy Day For one sunny and exciting day in May, McDonald’s restaurants in Kamloops and Merritt donated $1 from every McCafé® beverage, Happy Meal® or Big Mac® to RIH Foundation. With the help of the community, who indulged in some tasty treats, over $76,000 was raised in support of pediatric care at RIH. With McDonald’s support, a new Panda infant warmer will be used in the operating room, where caeseran births take place, to help keep our youngest patients warm and safe. Now that’s something to be McHappy about!
Pink Ribbon Ball The Pink Ribbon Ball came to an end after 16 successful years of raising awareness and funds in support of women’s breast health. At just 19 years old, Anthony Salituro was inspired to start this event with the help of his aunt, Josephine Bruno, after watching her survive her own struggle with breast cancer. In honour of the community’s support over the years, Anthony and Josephine decided to direct the funds raised to RIH; $125,000 was given in support of breast–health initiatives in Kamloops. On behalf of the entire RIH health– care team, our patients and their families, thank you to Anthony and Josephine for their incredible dedication and commitment to women’s health.

A New Operating Room for Royal Inland Hospital! RIH Foundation is currently raising funds in support of surgical equipment to outfit a new operating room at RIH. This $2.5–million campaign will ensure our hospital can keep up with the growing surgical demands of our community. It will be dedicated to the patients who’ve been waiting the longest. The list of equipment needed to create an entirely new OR is long and includes technology, tools and instruments both big and small. Some of the items we are seeking community support for include:
The anaesthetic machine and monitors are vital to every operating room to ensure surgical patients are carefully and properly sedated throughout their surgical procedure.
Specialized Surgical Instruments $250,000 Anaesthetic Machine and Monitors $160,000
A state-of-the-art operating table allows the surgical team to easily move patients into specific positions needed for different types of surgery.
Operating Table $70,000 Ultrasound machine $70,000 Portable Glidescope $30,000
A glidescope is used to provide a consistently clear, realtime view of the patient’s airway and tube placement, enabling quick and precise intubation.

What our surgeons are saying: “I have trained and worked at over a dozen hospitals, and visited multiple hospitals throughout the world. I am constantly amazed at the breadth and depth of the surgical program at RIH. The surgeons and entire hospital staff do an amazing job, especially considering the resources available. ~ Dr. Omahen, Neurosurgeon, Chief Of Surgery
“I’ve been a patient at Royal Inland Hospital for many years covering many life-threatening operations and procedures for chronic fistulizing crohn’s disease. I know how intimidating and stressful an operating room can truly be and the importance of having patients think positively and feel hope. I can tell you that the staff in RIH’s operating and recovery rooms are some of the best. They are fun-loving and humorous, while still being professional. They are compassionate as well as thorough and efficient. I would not be here if it wasn’t for them. This is why I have been so motivated over the last few years to show my appreciation back through Mastermind Studios in support of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation and its efforts to make our hospital a better place for patients and staff. A healthier hospital equals a healthier community. ~ Peter Cameron-Inglis, OR patient

Mike’s Story As an avid mountain biker, recent TRU graduate Mike Reid was training for the Canadian Nationals Mountain Biking Race at Sun Peaks when he took a hard fall while jumping off his bike in order to avoid crashing into a tree. He was brought to the ER at RIH for X-rays and it was discovered that he had broken both his right wrist and the fibula bone in his left leg. Surgery was necessary to repair the damage and, within 48 hours, he was in the OR with orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Beaton. Mike is grateful for the care he received: “Kamloops is an active community and accidents like this are, sadly, very common. I know that because of the orthopedic care and surgery I received, I will be back to doing what I love very soon.”
Did you know...? Royal Inland Hospital is a full-service medical centre with the third–largest trauma unit in BC. In the last year, over 10,000 surgeries were performed at RIH and of those, over 30% were emergencies.

Donor Story: Guy Mercier
Guy Mercier Comes in with a BOOM Last fall, we told our supporters the story of a young woman, Jenelle, who had been terribly wounded in a plane crash near Brenda Mines off the Coquihalla Connector Highway. Jenelle attributes her survival to the rescue team that found her after she lay unconscious for two hours and to the outstanding trauma team at RIH that worked quickly to stabilize her. Jenelle is doing well and her priorities these days are to live simply and make sure the time she spends with friends and family is quality time. She is grateful for each and everyday, and for the care she received at RIH. We had an overwhelming response to her story—raising $100,000—and were on our way to raising the funds needed to renovate the emergency room trauma room with overhead articulating booms. As the demands to the ER continued to increase—last year more than 57,000 patients were admitted to the department—we were eager to update the space and install the booms. Then in March, community leader Guy Mercier stepped up to the plate and pledged the remaining $130,000 which was needed to move ahead with this project. “One evening I ended up in the emergency and was astounded with the work of the emergency department. I recognized the ER was an integral component to the hospital, but experiencing it all firsthand was inspiring and motivated me to give back to RIH. I wanted a specific project that would make a difference; when I learned of the need for the booms in the ER, this was the project,” said Mr.Mercier.
Dr. Anders Ganstal, ER medical director, and Guy Mercier
Once installed, the booms will allow medical equipment to be mounted off the ground, diminishing the needs for cords to run across the floor, and be easily pushed out of the way allowing staff to move about quickly. It is crucial to make the space as functional as possible, so the trauma team can work together quickly and efficiently in high– stress, often life and death, circumstances. The trauma team is grateful to the generosity of the community and to Guy Mercier for this remarkable gift.
Did you know...? As a UBC teaching hospital, RIH is responsible for training third–year medical students and family–practice residents.
RIH Trauma Department Receives Praise Congratulations to the RIH staff who recently received recognition from the Interdisciplinary Trauma Network of Canada for their exceptional care of patients with multiple rib fractures, resulting in shorter hospital stays and improved outcomes of these trauma patients.

Afternoon and Evening Auxiliaries
RIH Auxiliaries: A Lasting Impact Both the Afternoon and Evening Auxiliaries to RIH have a long legacy of supporting health care in our community. The past year was no exception, with the Auxiliaries funding a variety of equipment that will have an immediate and long-lasting impact on patient care. The Afternoon Auxiliary is helping the diagnostic imaging team at RIH detect and diagnose osteoporosis quickly and accurately through their investment in a new bone–density system. This new machine replaced one that was over a decade old with more limited imaging capabilities. Osteoporosis is a growing health–care crisis affecting millions of people worldwide and can be life-threatening. If not diagnosed or treated, osteoporosis can progress until a bone fractures or breaks. The new bone–density machine has advanced software which results in very high–resolution images and, therefore, a more accurate osteoporosis diagnosis than previously possible. Early detection is also imperative to cancer–patient outcomes and, with the Evening Auxiliaries’ support, a new colonoscope is helping physicians at RIH screen more patients for colorectal cancer. Dr. Taralyn Picton, a gastroenterologist at RIH, is thrilled with the Evening Auxiliary-funded scope for several reasons: “The new scope is smaller and flexible enough that it can be used for our most difficult cases. As well, the state-of-theart scope has better optics than prior models, which ensures we offer quality service to our patients. Physicians can take samples with the scope and mark exact areas of cancer, which can ultimately lead to less–invasive surgery for the patient. The colonoscope is also used for patients suffering from conditions such as Crohn’s disease and colitis. The RIH health care team, patients and their families all benefit from the exceptional support of the RIH Afternoon and Evening Auxiliaries—thank you!
Did you know...? RIH is a full-service tertiary care hospital, with medical professionals specializing in the following areas: cancer care, cardiology, medical imaging, neurology, nephrology, obstetrics, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, rehabilitation services, respiratory therapy and surgery.

We are a local, family owned, full service funeral facility
For over 20 years Kamloops Funeral Home has been helping Kamloops families through very difficult times. We will answer any questions you may have regarding funerals and assist you with the decisions you need to make during a stressful time. Should you desire, we are also available to make funeral arrangements in the comfort of your home.We are the owners of the Kamloops Funeral Home and have been involved in the funeral business for over 30 years. The picture is in Smithers, BC where we learned the funeral business from our grandfather and father at the DeFrane Funeral Home (later, R.A. Schrader Funeral Home). We purchased Kamloops Funeral Home with the desire to continue a long tradition of Family Funeral Service in Kamloops BC.
