G
ood friends, Rose Goldenberg, age 13, and Eve Miller, age 12, have known each other for as long as they can remember. Attending Talmud Torah together since third grade, their friendship continues to grow as they discover how much they share in common. They both love to make music and they both want to help make the world a better place. Together, they are accomplishing both Eve and Rose making beautiful music together at Sholom Home West at Sholom Home on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. Both Rose and Eve have visited Sholom with their families in the past. Together, these girls decided to share their love of music and performance with the folks at Sholom. These days, Eve and Rose can often be found serenading their new friends at Sholom during the Sunday noon lunch hour. Eve sings with a lovely voice well beyond her years and Rose plays her violin with beauty and obvious joy. continued on page 3
Why is hospice pet therapy such an integral component of the Sholom Johnson Hospice Agency?* Pets have a longstanding history of providing faithful companionship and showing unconditional love for the humans in their lives. This companionship and love creates a powerful emotional bond between animal and human, reducing anxiety and stress, increasing feelings of relaxation, and an overall improved outlook on life. Hospice pet therapy uses the natural bond between animals and humans to provide comfort, peace, joy, humor, and soothing companionship to terminally ill patients. These visits promote activity, conversation, and emotional connection.

e are pleased to announce the addition of the Deikel Family AlterCare Adult Day Program Center located on the Ackerberg Family Sholom Home West Campus to Sholom’s family of senior care services! Caregivers who have jobs or simply need a break from the challenging work of attending to the needs Dawn and Patty enjoy an outing to Como Park of an elderly family member can with Program Director, Michaelia find a helping hand by turning to the Deikel Family AlterCare Adult Day Program Center. The center offers an opportunity for life-enriching and interactive programs including creative arts classes, pet visits, music, baking, movement and exercise, cooking, educational programs and recreational activities, all geared to the needs and abilities of the participants. “We provide many unique programs and services that not a lot of other adult day centers have,” says Michaelia Paulus, Deikel Family AlterCare Adult Day Supervisor. “It’s a great place for folks who may be isolated at home and have a spouse or caregiver who is keeping an eye on them. This program gives our participants plenty of opportunities for interaction. They particularly enjoy and participate in the music programs and performances, humming or singing along with the music of their lifetimes. For many, these programs are the highlights of the week, and a positive way to keep our folks focused and engaged.” Offering a respite for caregivers Attending the adult day program is an impactful way to help ward off social isolation. For caregivers, it provides a respite, allowing them to take care of their own needs or simply have a day to themselves. The program offers an environment overseen by registered nurses who provide medication assistance, health monitoring and education. Staff can help with showering and other needs as well. Sholom staff also offer caregivers support and is published four times guidance. Never Too Young to Make a Difference continued from page 1 The residents are delighted to listen to the girls and look forward to their visits. Eve and Rose perform both duets and solos, sharing their talents with a combination of old favorites, like Over the Rainbow and classical pieces for the violin, as well as lovely contemporary ballads. Many in the audience sing and hum along with the music. These two young performers always have a smile on their face, and their joy in sharing this time and their music with the Sholom elders is clearly contagious. “I love that Rose and Eve are volunteering at Sholom and having this intergenerational experience. I also love that they are doing this together,” says Rose’s Excitement at seeing their names on the posting of Sunday events! mother, Debbie Goldenberg. Following their performance, Rose and Eve chat with the delighted audience, topping off a special afternoon, with everyone expressing their appreciation and encouraging them to come again. Both girls understand that music is not only engaging, but fun and uplifting. They are very happy to know they are making a difference in the lives of all those who so enjoy their musical visits. Eve’s mother, Ann Miller, tells us, “Eve and Rose are both getting so much more than they are giving from these visits. Sholom is a special place and we feel lucky to have this gem in our community.”

A letter for the Sholom staff,
M
y mother Ruth Rischall was a resident at Sholom East on the second day it opened some eight years ago. She passed away on September 11.
I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the staff at Sholom for the wonderful care my mother received. All of the nurses were exceptional, and I know my mother’s life was extended by the care they offered. I remember a time I thought my mom had a bad cold and they told me that we should have her seen; it looked like pneumonia to them and they were correct. They helped me keep my mom on the assisted-living side, suggesting when we needed to use personal aides. Staying in her own apartment was so important to her. The nurses’ aides also did a fantastic job frequently checking in with her to make sure she was well. The woman who cleaned her apartment was always respectful as were the food servers who knew not to give her cucumbers and that she liked cranberry juice. The women at the reception desk were always friendly and helpful, and the billing staff responded promptly and cheerfully when I had questions. The maintenance personnel made sure mom’s apartment was comfortable and safe. Everyone on the Sholom staff treated mom with great respect. My mom lived to be 95 and had a good run. I had peace of mind knowing that everyone cared so much for her. As you can see, you have a total team of wonderful workers and I can’t thank everyone enough. We often say about a dear one, “may their memory be for a blessing.” I want to tell you all that you are a blessing to all the residents of Sholom every single day. Gratefully yours, Deborah Frishberg

y mother was a resident [at Sholom Home West] for almost five years. Yes, I had my share of issues with this facility over the years. However, the bottom line is that 99% of the staff are loving, caring people. This is more than just a job to them. They have a heart for this. I will be forever grateful to the staff of Sholom Home West for treating my mother with respect and love. — A Google review from a grateful son

After 45 years, Bud Weiner took to the skies as his Wish of a Lifetime became a reality
S
holom Resident, Bud Weiner has daydreamed of sky-time since the early age of 14. His rural home in Minnesota served as the perfect spot to watch planes pass through the sky and imagine himself in the pilot seat. Fortunately, Bud’s dreams became reality when he obtained his pilot’s license in his 20s.
“I felt absolutely Bud looks back on his years in the sky with fondness and longing. He used his giddy to fly again.” pilot’s license to launch his career, help others, and spend quality time with family. The planes he owned helped him deliver glass products to shops all around the Midwest for his company. Aside from using flight to improve his business, Bud used his planes to help the police find convicts who had escaped from jail and even find missing children and pets. But most importantly to Bud, he cherishes the memories he has of taking his children and wife on adventures in his plane. In the 1970s, Bud suffered a heart attack and was no longer able to fly a plane. Since then, he has always wanted to take one final flight. For fortyfive years Bud thought he would never take flight again, but with the help of an organization called Wish of a Lifetime and the special help of a flight Bud Weiner’s wish is fulfilled instructor at Twin Cities Aviation, his dreams became a reality. Bud was extremely excited to participate in this flight and when asked how he felt to fly once more, he responded, “Flying was the best time of my life . . . I felt absolutely giddy to fly again.”
With a view of the fall colors one simply can’t get from the ground, Weiner says he was in his element once more. And, despite the years, he managed to bring the plane back in for a smooth landing. Wish of a Lifetime™ fosters respect and appreciation for deserving seniors by fulfilling their life-enriching Wishes. Wish of a Lifetime has made over 1,600 Wishes come true for seniors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The organization aims to create a positive shift in the way society views and values aging by sharing the stories of its inspiring Wish recipients with those of all generations. Hospice Therapy Dogs continued from page 1 Often, simply the presence of the animal is all that is required to promote positive effects, both emotionally and physically. Dogs, by far are the most popular choice for pet therapy, universally enjoyed by hospice patients for their loving, compassionate presence and ability to read subtle emotional and physical cues from humans. These animals and their handlers have the unique ability to bring transformative joy and comfort during a time when a patient’s outlook on life may be at its most grim. Hospice pet therapy, using the longstanding bond between humans and animals, brings joy, humor, unconditional love and soothing companionship to those on their end-of-life journey.

A “tail” of one volunteer’s experience with her very special hospice therapy dog, Olivia Once when I visited a hospice patient, “G” said she was too tired for a visit. I told her we’d only stay a few minutes and put on some music she loved. Olivia was in a chair next to the bed, elbows on the bed (so, basically in G’s lap). G petted Olivia, listened to and “conducted” the music in the air, and nodded off to sleep. She Jo & Olivia conducted, rested and petted Olivia for over a half hour and Olivia didn’t move during that entire time. Olivia was happy to be with her friend and knew her job entailed not moving. During that time, G sometimes spoke, “I wish I were a doggy, because then I could marry you!”
“It is always fun to see the joy on faces of all the people in the halls when we come for a visit. Both staff and visitors enjoy seeing little Mo prance down along as he is on his way to see his friend.” —Hospice Therapist, Kate and “Mo.”

Newman School youngsters express their thanks
Jen shares her artwork with the children
A special blend of youngsters and oldsters— a recipe for fun The youngsters from the Newman School of the St. Paul Talmud Torah visit the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus regularly. They bring hand-made cards to the residents at the Chapman Sholom Home East and exchange smiles and conversations with one another. They also visit memory-care residents for an interactive crafts project. Stories are exchanged as they create works of art together. In October, several residents went to visit the children at the Newman School to further cement their relationships. “This is an incredible inter-generational program. We are especially grateful for the Firefly Scientist’s Foundation grant that covers the cost of transporting the children to and from our campus,” says Campus Volunteer Coordinator, Lori Rodewald, “In fact, that they created a very large thank you letter, signed by all the children to the ‘Firefly Lady’ who makes these visits possible.”

Minneapolis Jewish community organizations, schools, and congregations. This program is funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater St. Paul and the Minneapolis Jewish Federation in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACY™ initiative. It enables donors to fulfill their philanthropic goals while strengthening the Twin Cities Jewish community, now and in the future. Legacies left by members of our community help sustain vital programs, services, and institutions that assist the vulnerable and advance Jewish life locally, in Israel, and around the world. In the year since its inception, almost 500 families and individuals have completed Letters of Intent that will provide for one or more recipient institutions of the Twin Cities Jewish community representing millions of dollars in future gifts. Sholom is very grateful to be among the many intended recipient organizations to benefit from this innovative and collaborative program.

Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of the Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can! Consider establishing your own named Auxiliary endowment fund or donate to any of the existing Auxiliary endowment funds listed here. 4% of every Auxiliary endowment fund is used annually for the benefit of Sholom clients. All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made payable to: Sholom Foundation, for the benefit of the Sholom Auxiliary. To find out more about creating your own Sholom Auxiliary Endowment, contact Barbara Brooks at 952.939.1594.
