MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
2022 was a busy and exciting year for the company at large and here at Mosaic. Even in the face of pandemic uncertainty and adjustments, we found innovative ways to gather, celebrate and reflect with our colleagues. The year held several firsts for Mosaic: we hosted a leadership panel in February, co-created an allyship learning series in August and collaborated with partner firms on an external Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in October. We also witnessed the development and growth of goals and initiatives we had set forth in previous years: we reached more employees and hosted more Conversation Corners than ever before.
While our packed calendar for 2023 is already underway, we’d like to thank the Mosaic volunteers who have dedicated their time, effort and ideas to create the successes of 2022. We also thank our leadership panel participants – Francesca Brando, Liling Cao, Dennis Poon and Dorian Soler – for their time, enthusiasm and insights.
With gratitude, The 2022 Mosaic
Board Jennifer Mahan, Holly McCauley and Ryann Malicdem1. Leadership Panel, February 23
On the heels of International Mother Language Day (February 21), Mosaic hosted a panel to explore how Thornton Tomasetti leaders have navigated their careers from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. With more than 60 in-person attendees and many others tuning in online, our firstever Mosaic panel was a success! It was a pleasure to see a sampling of different and unique experiences of Thornton Tomasetti employees, and equally rewarding to see the themes and lessons that connected the panelists.
2. Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, May
With spring in the air, employees got out of the offices and into the museums to explore the cultural contributions and heritages of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the U.S. and beyond. Since May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, this month’s Conversation Corner explored the intersections of cultural identity and mental health.
3. Juneteenth, June 20
To continue our Conversations to Create Lasting Change, hundreds of employees around the globe tuned in to our virtual Juneteenth sessions for a time of reflection, celebration and discussion. We talked about the opportunities and challenges that arise when we listen, learn, engage, invest and amplify other voices in difficult conversations.
4. Allyship Training, August
Mosaic joined the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) committee, Women@TT and Spectrum to create a two-part allyship training for employees. Brave (and talented!) volunteers put down their hard hats and picked up their scripts to develop, write and produce skits that reflect real-world scenarios.
5. Mosaic + Green Champions Volunteer Day, October 25
Local Mosaic volunteers and green champions in the New York office joined forces for a service day with the NYC Parks Department. Volunteers raked, swept and bagged leaves on a scenic autumn day at Thomas Jefferson Park, located in the historically Black and Brown neighborhood of East Harlem. Afterwards, volunteers enjoyed a well-deserved treat at the nearby Tres Leches Café, a neighborhood favorite for sweet treats.
6. Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15–October 15
This year, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in collaboration with the 2023 Wellness Challenge. From salsa dance classes in New York to catered lunch from a Latinx-owned family business in San Francisco, employees across the company explored themes of identity, wellness and recognition in Hispanic and Latino/ Latina/Latinx communities. We also sponsored an event with colleagues from Turner, Langan and other industry partners, featuring our own Juan Londono as one of the panelists.
7. International Migrants Day (SF Office), December 18
To close out the year, the San Francisco office hosted a potluck and reflected on migrant stories from their own family histories. Employees shared good food and memorable stories that reflected the diverse multicultural backgrounds within the office.
Recruitment
Mosaic worked closely with the Thornton Tomasetti recruitment team to increase our outreach. We hosted our first recruitment event via Handshake in the winter and continued to build the partnership throughout the year. We also collaborated with other ENGs to present our first-ever event for recent hires. We look forward to building on this work and providing further recruitment opportunities and support for new employees.
Conversation Corners — Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, Hispanic & Latinx employees
The Mosaic Conversation Corner series seeks to foster connections among employees of diverse cultural groups at Thornton Tomasetti by providing a space to discuss important issues that affect their communities. In 2022, we hosted three Conversation Corners for employees who identify as Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, and Hispanic and/or Latina/Latino /Latinx. We hope to further build this initiative in 2023.
New Office Welcome — Pune!
Among the new developments within the company, we are ecstatic to see the opening of our newest office – in Pune, India! From the office inauguration to holiday celebrations, we’re happy to see Pune embrace the spirit of Mosaic, and we look forward to collaborations in 2023.
