Continuous Monitoring to Fix Little Problems Before They Become Big Headaches

How do you simplify the detection of material damage?

You teach a computer to do it.

T2D2 is a self-learning software platform that detects and classifies visible damage to various types of structures and materials. T2D2 uses the latest developments in artificial intelligence – specifically, deep learning for computer vision – to detect and localize damage by analyzing inspection images.

HERE’S HOW

T2D2 and Helios Visions have joined forces to bring you a unique new alternative to conventional methods of building-envelope condition assessment. T2D2/Helios uses an AI-powered, drone-enabled system to conduct assessments faster and more economically than ever before. T2D2/Helios reduces costs by more than 50 percent, compared to standard hands-on building inspection, and takes approximately one-quarter of the time, eliminating expensive scaffolding, drops and lifts. T2D2 was built using deep neural networks trained on tens of thousands of annotated images. It applies computer vision technology to image analytics, allowing it to identify a wide range of material defects – automatically. And T2D2’s online portal maintains a timestamped record of all detected conditions, enabling building owners, management and maintenance teams to monitor deterioration of buildings for early remediation and avoid costly repairs down the line.

WHAT SETS T2D2 APART? T2D2/Helios is faster, more cost-effective and more convenient than conventional assessment methods. It performs high-quality assessments for less half the cost of, and in less than 25 percent of the time it takes to perform hands-on inspections. And it significantly reduces the risk of injuries from working on scaffolding. T2D2 enjoys a global geographic footprint through a partnership with Thornton Tomasetti, a world-class engineering and design firm that has served market sectors worldwide for more than 70 years, The platform’s superpowered algorithms were trained on Thornton Tomasetti’s massive multiyear forensics database. And the firm’s Renewal practice continues to provide comprehensive engineering expertise and support to T2D2. T2D2 also benefits from Helios Visions’ smart-drone technology, which is specially certified for select urban markets.

GET THESE MODULES ON T2D2’S ONLINE PORTAL Images T2D2 lets you upload images for multistep inference through the platform’s computer vision models – first identifying materials and then detecting damage. Engineers then review the detections, add annotations to those that are valid, mark false positives and geotag them to specific locations on drawings of the structure. Orthomosaics Since most orthomosaics (stitched composite images) provide a complete representation of a façade or roof, they don’t include separate geotags. T2D2 applies orthomosaic models using a “sliding window” approach to mark damage and prevent double-counting of conditions on images with overlapping areas. Condition Assessment Reports T2D2’s secure online portal maintains a record of all detected damage and associated metadata, including engineer reviews, and can generate reports that serve as a basis for repair efforts.

MODULES (continued) Videos T2D2 evaluates the individual frames of videos, tracking detections across multiple frames to filter out false positives. 3D Models Drone surveys of buildings often produce 3D photogrammetric models. T2D2 performs damage detection on the original 2D images and geotags the 3D model using the mapping from the photogrammetry process. The T2D2 portal lets you interact with the 3D model containing the associated detections. Thermography T2D2 processes thermographic images to detect anomalies such as leaks and moisture entrapment in façades and roofs. 360o Panotours T2D2 processes 360-degree panoramic tours (“panotoursâ€?), adding damage-condition annotations and providing a platform for visualizing the combined results.

NO DRONE? NO PROBLEM! Some cities and muncipalities heavily regulate or prohibit drone flights. Luckily, you don’t need a drone to benefit from T2D2’s imageprocessing and data-reporting capabilities. T2D2 can process images acquired in multiple ways, including through traditional methods, taken by inspectors on swing stage scaffold rigs, boom lifts or other apparatus. Images can also be taken by cameras with zoom lenses or on tripods, or – with a sufficiently highresolution camera – taken from a distance (e.g., from a neighboring building). T2D2’s mobile app can capture and process images on any Android or iOS smartphone or tablet. You can take photos, geotag them and add notes directly on the app – and automatically sync them with the portal through your cellular or Wi-Fi connection. No matter who captures them, or where, T2D2 processes images the same way. And T2D2 lets you manually geotag these images while still taking advantage of the continuous monitoring and report generation that is available through the T2D2 web portal.
