T
hornwillow is located in Newburgh, New York, a beautiful Hudson River town that was home to George Washington during much of the Revolutionary War. Newburgh includes extraordinary architecture and landscape design, one of the first Edison plants, as well as the historic Ritz Theater, where Lucille Ball made her stage debut. In the 1950’s the city was celebrated in Look Magazine as the most beautiful city in America. In more recent history, however, Newburgh lost its manufacturing base and suffered a terrible economic collapse. Poverty, lack of hope, and civic neglect left Newburgh in decay. Thornwillow is committed to supporting manufacturing in America. We are dedicated to help transform the heart of Newburgh into a thriving hub of craft, culture, and community. In 2015, the thornwillow institute was founded to promote and perpetuate art and craftsmanship in all its forms, especially related to the written word. We believe that how we communicate and preserve ideas matters. Objects you can touch, keep, and give are central to the identity of our culture. These objects become the legacy of our society. They memorialize our values, triumphs, challenges, and dreams.

S
ituated on the hudson river just 60 miles north of Manhattan, Newburgh is a city with enormous potential and yet significant challenges. The city once housed George Washington’s headquarters, and boasts the largest historic district in New York state, with scores of architecturally notable buildings. Newburgh, with a population of approximately 28,000, today is poised for change. The Makers Village is a transformative economic development and downtown revitalization initiative launched by The Thornwillow Institute. Sited within a complex of properties centered on South Lander Street, the project builds on the success of Thornwillow Press. Anchored by a century-old carriage house, it will include maker studios and fellowship residences, a bookstore café, a classroom lab, a gallery and event space, and more. Programs and partnerships have already begun and The Makers Village promises to advance Newburgh’s resurgence as one of New York’s most economically diverse and dynamic places.

T
he carriage house on South Lander Street was built to serve city carriages as Newburgh boomed in the late nineteenth century. Then, after economic collapse, it was left abandoned for decades. Today, redevelopment of this historic space has begun, and it has played host to a number of groups looking to bring the arts to Newburgh. In 2018 alone, the English Concert In America performed Bach and Handel, Arts Mid-Hudson brought artists together to connect and collaborate, and artists of all stripes have used the space as a gallery to exhibit their work. All this in a building still to be developed. Imagine the life it can bring to this community once it has been. Development of the Carriage House will include: . A renovated gallery and event space . An audio/video studio . Artist studios, meeting spaces, makers classrooms and labs Opening the ground floor will create an inviting and fluid street front, activating The Makers Village and inviting visitors and commerce to Newburgh’s East End Historic District.

T
he corner building at the intersection of Spring and South Lander Streets stood abandoned for many years. At long last, there is the opportunity to turn the space into Newburgh’s only bookstore. The city has been without a bookstore for decades, and is in real need of one. With a bookstore café occupying the first floor, alongside a meeting space for readings, workshops and music, the upper floors of the historic townhouse will be renovated into accommodations for artists and fellows. Already, The Thornwillow Institute has hosted artists and makers from across the world to come to Newburgh and create. Illustrator George Cochrane recently finished a massive project—a hand-lettered edition of Dante’s Inferno. With dedicated living and studio spaces, provided by The Makers Village, such endeavours and collaborations will be brought to new heights. Like the salons of Paris in the 1920’s, the corner building should prove the beating heart of Newburgh’s creative revival.
