Newburgh is located only an hour north of Manhattan, on bluffs overlooking the Newburgh Bay that inspired Hudson River School painters, and just a short distance from DIA: Beacon, Storm King, Boscobel, Hyde Park, West Point, and The Culinary Institute of America. Thornwillow knows there is hope and opportunity for this community that has been forgotten for too long. We believe positive change is possible through the pursuit of excellence and the community-based creation of lasting and vital works of art.

October 3rd, 2016 Dear Friend,

I am writing to you today to share an important new chapter in our work at Thornwillow Press. In celebration of our 30th anniversary, we are pleased to announce the formation of The Thornwillow Institute, dedicated to promoting and perpetuating the art of craftsmanship in our ephemeral world of letters. Through the Institute, a not-for-profit 501c3 organization, we are embarking upon a capital campaign that will provide the foundation for Thornwillow’s next 30 years. To build that foundation, we need your support. As you know, Thornwillow has always celebrated the idea that how we communicate and preserve ideas matters. Objects you can touch, keep, and give are central to the identity of our culture. These objects become the legacy of our civilization. They memorialize our values, triumphs, challenges, and dreams. In the enclosed portfolio, you’ll see how we pursue this mission through our handmade publications, personalized crafts and gifts, the newly created Institute, and, now, an artisanal campus we call Thornwillow Makers Village. This campus will emerge from an ensemble of structures adjacent to Thornwillow’s headquarters in the heart of Newburgh, New York, a beautiful but economically challenged Hudson River city. We are setting out to restore this collection of historic buildings as a thriving hub of craft and culture—a catalyst for economic growth and renewal that extends our core mission of making ideas count. At the village, we intend to host artists and writers in residence, produce workshops and master classes, offer job and career training, and provide access to artisanal production equipment for craftspeople and members of the community. the thornwillow institute - 25 spring street - newburgh ny I2550 (845) 569-8883 www.thornwillow.com/about-us/institute
