Editorial

Much more than company foundation Every day in Switzerland, more than 50 people take the bold step of starting a business. That takes courage. And passion. In 1989, we made it our mission to guide these entrepreneurs on their way to becoming successful businesses, helping their ideas flourish and their companies become a part of the foundation of the Swiss economy. Working together with our dedicated premium partners ABACUS, la Mobilière, PostFinance and Swisscom, as well as other prominent partners, we accompany founders from the first question to formation of the company, and help them gain the best start with personal consultations, a free start-up course and an ingeniously simple incorporation service. And with our starting credit, founders even receive financial support.

To evaluate and further develop your ideas, we offer the IFJ BusinessPlan tool, the leading instrument of its kind in Switzerland. Furthermore, modern offices and individual workplaces are available in our startup space in Zurich-Schlieren. Find the answers to your individual support needs in our Startup Guide, attend our free lectures and intensive courses, apply for funding programmes and benefit from helpful offers from our partners. We look forward to meeting you personally and supporting your start-up. Entrepreneurial regards

Simon May, Member of Executive Management

Finding investors

From the idea to the business plan and funding

If you want to evaluate an idea, start a company or help your existing company move forward, you need a business plan. Only when you know exactly what you want to achieve will you be able to persuade partners, banks, investors and customers to join you. In the past, the market was relatively stable; today, the only constant is change itself. The challenges facing entrepreneurs are increasingly complex: signs of a saturated market, changing consumer behaviour, falling product manufacture costs and the time factor are just a few of the keywords here. It is crucial to recognise change in good time and respond to it with suitable measures. Business plans are a great way to plan for your future in a responsible manner. As you do so, you can rely on our 25 years of experience and the IFJ BusinessPlan tool, the leading such instrument in Switzerland. Our support for you: www.businessplan.ch: Unique tool with instructional videos, templates and a wealth of valuable information about business plans. www.ifj.ch/BusinessplanBasic: In this workshop, you will create your basic business plan on the spot and learn the ins and outs of business plans. www.ifj.ch/BusinessplanAdvanced: In this free intensive course, experts from PwC teach you how to leverage the content of a professional business plan and find funding sources. www.ifj.ch/conferences_en: At these free lectures, you will gain a wealth of important knowledge from business people, investors and experts. www.venturekick.ch: CHF 130,000 in seed capital and training courses for spin-offs from Swiss universities and institutes of higher learning.

Plan for growth

Putting the optimal infrastructure in place

Growth brings your business more of everything: more customers, more sales, more profits and more employees. But also more challenges. We help you learn how to maintain a clear view of the situation in the midst of hectic daily operations, while keeping sight of your vision and strategy. Accounting, address management and order management are prerequisites for any successful company. Many business founders begin to realise this only after a year or two, when they have become swamped by invoices, customers, debtors and creditors, or are paying out large sums to an accountant. And when it comes to IT infrastructure, inexperienced entrepreneurs often settle for inadequate solutions. But that need not happen to you. We have developed web-based, comprehensive solutions that will simplify your everyday operations significantly. And our funding programmes open up international markets and the doors of big-name partners for start-ups with ambitious growth objectives. Our support for you: www.ifj-abaweb.ch: With these professional, web-based business and accounting solutions, you get a good handle on your numbers and administration. www.business-navigator.ch: This business portal puts start-ups on the path to success. You manage your customers and handle the simple accounting with ease. www.businessplan.ch: Unique tool with instructional videos, templates and a wealth of valuable information about business plans. www.ifj.ch/conferences_en: At our free lectures, you gain a wealth of useful tips and information from successful businesspeople, personalities and experts in the field. www.venturelab.ch: World-class startups. Swiss made. The support programme for the best Swiss startup talents. www.startup.ch: Free start-up portrait and the TOP 100 start-ups in Switzerland.

venturelab

World-class startups. Swiss made. World-class startups, Swiss made, that conquer the world. Since 2004 we advocate for ambitious founders with great visions. We support researchers and other innovative founders since their first entrepreneurial steps. From the startup acceleration workshops at ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne to the venture leaders roadshows, including the Founders Circles as well as the close cooperation with industry partners such as BKW, Swisscom or Zuhlke, we gear entrepreneurs to support flawless execution. Entrepreneurs learn how to successfully set up their business, pitch investors and customers, and negotiate financing rounds and partnerships.

In 2016, ETH spin-off Haelixa travelled to New York with venturelab.

The best startup talents of Switzerland can be selected for the venture leaders, the Swiss startup national teams programme, which provides international exposure to investors and markets. The venture leaders join roadshows to the Silicon Valley, Boston, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Bangalore, South Africa, Berlin or London, open the door to a unique international network. 75 out of the TOP 100 Swiss startups of 2016 have started with venturelab: i.a. Abionic, senseFly, Lunaphore, Gamaya, L.E.S.S., Covagen, Climeworks, InSphero, QualySense or Poken. www.venturelab.ch

Venture Kick

CHF 3 million seed capital annually for innovative startup projects With the launch of Venture Kick by the Venture Kick Foundation, in 2007 the IFJ Institut für Jungunternehmen received the mandate for the operation of the initiative. Venture Kick helps highly innovative entrepreneurs from Swiss universities and institutes of higher learning with seed capital of up to CHF 130,000. These startup projects also benefit from business development workshops and an extensive investor network. As of December 2016, 463 startups have benefited from the overall support of CHF 18,65 million. The programme has contributed to the creation of more than 4,000 new jobs for highly qualified people and to a financing volume of well over CHF 1 billion. 57 of the TOP 100 Swiss Startups 2016 started with Venture Kick like L.E.S.S., Uepaa, Flyability, Bcomp, Polyneuron Pharmaceuticals, Glycemicon and Lunaphore. The results show that the Swiss economy has benefited substantially from the Venture Kick approach. The Venture Kick initiative is financed by private foundations, companies and individuals: Gebert Rüf Stiftung, Ernst Göhner Stiftung, Fondation Lombard Odier, Debiopharm Group, Fondation ProTechno, Rising Tide Foundation, ESA BIC Switzerland, Engagement Migros, Swisscom, Hansjörg Wyss, André Hoffmann and Martin Haefner.

The ETH spin-off xorlab won the Venture Kick final 2016.

Partners

Dedicated partners support entrepreneurship

Since 1989, IFJ has worked together with strong partners from the world of business. Our Premium Partners also assist in the organisation of STARTIMPULSE events and provide additional support through special offers for start-ups. ‘ABACUS also began life as a start-up with limited financial means. So we’re very pleased to join the IFJ in lending start-ups a helping hand with an attractive offer on our cloud-based software.’ Daniel Senn, ABACUS ‘For la Mobilière, our collaboration with the IFJ is an important contribution to strengthening Switzerland’s position not only as a centre for work, but particularly as a centre of thought: the networking platform provided by STARTIMPULSE events with the regional centres promotes values that are also core values of our company.’ Stephan Jossen, la Mobilière ‘PostFinance supports the interests of founders with conviction. That has led to our partnership with IFJ Institut für Jungunternehmen. Together with the IFJ, we develop special offers for start-ups.’ Patrik Vonlanthen, PostFinance ‘We share and support the commitment of IFJ Institut für Jungunternehmen in the promotion of entrepreneurship in Switzerland. This shared the commitment has led to the emergence of a long-standing partnership geared towards helping as many start-ups as possible.’ Roger Wüthrich-Hasenböhler, Swisscom
