2013 ANNUAL

We have in our country freedom of the press—for those who own a press. William Randolph Hearst, Rupert Murdoch and I share this forum, though admittedly my press is of considerably less reach and consists mainly of writing these catalog introductions. However, I can say with some humility that my sentiments are sincere and are intended as a thank you note to patrons of Thos. Moser and those who aspire to become patrons. This year we step into our fifth decade of crafting furniture for those committed few who appreciate exacting craftsmanship, universal design and sublime materials. We do so with excitement about what lies ahead, particularly as we take stock of all that we have learned and accomplished in the past. It is no secret that the last few years have been a bumpy ride for many Americans, and Thos. Moser has not been immune to the turbulence. As a result, we have had to make changes to how we sell what we make. We’ve closed some showrooms and opened new ones. We’ve altered how we design and distribute our catalog. After much stubborn resistance, we have given into the idea of having a “sale”—a word which was never part of our lexicon and, more importantly, not built into our pricing model which has always been an honest, cost-based approach. The marketplace has changed, and like any good business we must adapt to change and react in a way that will afford us the opportunity to grow and thrive. The changing times also make us optimistic. There is a significant move away from commodities and a renewed interest in things that are meaningful, made well here at home and built with the individual in mind. This ethos has always been the foundation of our company. I have never viewed us as mere purveyors of home furnishings. We have been—and always will be—a community of craftspeople who value hard work and share a commitment to our craft. Our customers trust us to make furniture that will not only grace their homes and lives, but will become a legacy to future generations. These are fundamental truths which will never change. So while the world shifts and we adapt to the “new normal,” staying true to How and Why we make what we sell remains our top priority. We are also excited about what Thos. Moser will be designing and building in the future. Some of our furniture was designed nearly 40 years ago, and continues to be purchased by people who are just now discovering us. And yet, every year new ideas emerge from the shop, proving that the search for beauty in function is an eternal journey. Ultimately, it is you, our patrons, who will determine which pieces are worthy of continuing. The past may be prologue to the future but it is not the only guide. Between your input and our imagination, we will continue to move forward as we have for these past 40 years. Thank You for your continued support and patronage.

introducing the

HUNT CHAIR When North Carolina State University asked Thos. Moser to design furniture for its new James B. Hunt, Jr. Library, they spoke of their appreciation for tradition, while sharing their desire for a look they could claim as their own. In response, Aaron Moser designed the Hunt Chair—a new interpretation of our hardworking, long-admired Regent Chair, so often employed in academic and office settings. The Hunt Chair embraces a more contemporary aesthetic, to create a clean, sweeping design that complements the University’s ambitious project. The overwhelmingly positive response to the chairs suggested that the design deserves a place among our residential collection.

THE Hunt Chair. A STUDY IN EVOLUTION.

More than 125 Hunt Chairs grace the Quiet Reading Room of the new James B. Hunt, Jr. Library at North Carolina State University.

Designed for versatility, the Hunt Chair’s distinctive frame makes extensive use of steambent elements to form a series of gentle curves, lending new lightness and energy to its traditional Regent Chair inspiration. Legs ease gracefully from the floor meeting sturdy mortise-and-tenon joints at the sweeping chair rail. Crafted with elegant floating tenon joints on the back legs, and an upholstered seat base utilizing a rabbet joint to minimize mass, the Hunt Chair achieves a new level of refinement. The chair can be customized either with or without a seat back—providing superior comfort, beauty and durability. The Hunt Chair is an exquisite example of how understanding the past inspires fresh, contemporary design.

ellipse Collection We are advocates of simplicity—and simplicity is the very essence of Ellipse. Designed with a sense of economy popularized in the late 1940s and 1950s—when, like now, both money and resources were scarce. Ellipse is functional, elegant and 100% Moser. Using distinctive design elements like visible joints, exposed end grains, gentle elliptical forms and space-efficient profiles, Ellipse is the most elemental collection we have ever designed. At Thos. Moser, elemental means beauty, economy and the uncompromising craftsmanship ever synonymous with our name.

Like every collection we offer, Ellipse is tied together by a consistent design language that flows through every piece. And whether you’re observing the gentle sweep of the arms in our armchairs and two- and three-place sofas, the curve of our occasional table or the subtle expression of the design elements in our media cabinet and side table, you’ll immediately sense that they belong together. Other elements—like exposed end grains, visible joints and superbly-finished joinery reinforce that conclusion. So whether you’re outfitting an entire home or augmenting your current décor with a single, carefully-placed piece, the essence of the entire Ellipse collection will shine through.

ellipse dining In today’s smaller, cozier dining areas, visual cues can mean the difference between comfort and confinement. When we crafted the Ellipse Dining collection, we were particularly mindful of the need to do more with less. The result? Tables with gently tapered legs that finish in airy suspended joints. Smooth, uninterrupted tabletops with beautifully beveled, subtly curved edges. Dining chairs with handcrafted mortise-and-tenon joinery that provides strength and durability without stretchers, opening clear sightlines and allowing ample room for the whole family. And seats with gently curving lines and unadorned upholstery, for a look that’s every bit as beautiful as it is comfortable.

In addition to its meticulous craftsmanship and simple components, the upholstery in the Ellipse Living collection also represents an enhancement to our standard practices. On the chairs, couches and ottoman, upholstery appears relaxed and inviting, suggesting its evident comfort, while retaining a sense of refined style. As a result, our Ellipse offerings feel both casual and welcoming—bringing an instant sense of warmth to their surroundings.

I began by crafting furniture using wood from our own woodlot in New Gloucester, Maine. After several years of curing, this material was turned into contemporary furnishings for every room in the house, including the home office. Today, our American black cherry is sustainably-sourced from the Allegheny Plateau of Western Pennsylvania. It ages beautifully and develops a sublime patina. Other species are available as well.

THOS. MOSER CONTINUOUS ARM CHAIR™

This was our company in 1978. Everyone in the picture made furniture except for Mary Moser who stands in the middle. We now have more than 60 cabinetmakers building furniture, nearly half of whom are women.

Shown above: Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair $1,325 Georgetown Single Pedestal Solid Top Table $4,150

In 1977, Tom Moser set out to create a new generation of the continuous arm chair. It took him several years to perfect the design. He made the first prototypes for the back of the chair out of copper plumbing pipes, because they were easily bent and held their shape. Once he got the design just right, he created a wooden form and began experimenting with lamination and bending techniques. As Tom recalls, “Originally I used wedges, then I used a cam and strap to

create the right pressure to form the bend. It still wasn’t right, so I employed a stainless steel strap with a couple of arms that came off a logging truck and some ratchets. Finally, I graduated to using air pressure. The whole process took me several years, a little piece at a time.” By the 1980s, the Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair was ready to make its debut. Judging from the reception the chair received from our customers, it was well worth the effort.

eastward dining chairs & oval ring extension table In the early days at Thos. Moser, the initial shaping of seat blanks into their finished forms was truly an exercise in rough sculpture, accomplished with a chain saw and a strong back. Today, machine routers rough cut the seats with greater safety and precision, then an experienced cabinetmaker uses a handheld grinding tool to contour the seat into its finished form. Shaping the crisp, straight lines of the Eastward seats requires a steady hand and exacting skill. One slip and the vibrating grinding tool will scallop the edge, sending the piece to the scrap pile. Each wedged chair leg must be delicately sanded smooth without grinding away too much of the seat. The result is an object of subtle beauty and remarkable comfort that will surely stand the test of time. Because of the flex in the back, the Eastward Side Chair may well be the most comfortable of all the wood chairs we make.

pure form: the modern enables the classic Several years ago, Tom Moser spent a day at the Redman Library, a public library built in the 18thcentury in Newport, Rhode Island. It was one of the very first lending libraries in this country, and in 1752 they ordered 20 chairs for their patrons’ use. The chairs were Windsor in style with turned legs and instead of having stretchers that extended from front to back and side to side, these chairs had stretchers that extended diagonally, from the right front leg to the rear left leg. Twelve of those original 20 chairs are still in existence, and they’ve been used every day for over 250 years, except for the three or four years when the British used the library as an officer’s bedroom during the American Revolution. A 250-year plus track record of daily use is a pretty impressive standard, so Tom set out to design a chair, drawing on the best attributes of those “Newport” chairs. To this day, our Newport Chair is one of Tom Moser’s favorites and the one he uses at his home office because it offers the right combination of support and comfort.

The Boat Top Table works with all of our chairs, including all wood or upholstery seating. In fact, at the risk of inviting competition, the table works well with most chairs, even those not of our design. (Please note that most arm chairs do not slide under the apron.) Newport Chair

artistry in wood With the Georgetown Double Pedestal Table, we crafted our own rendition of the classic pedestal table, supported by an innovative leg design. Grain-matched legs are individually shaped to create facets that uniquely capture light and shadow. Each leg is reinforced with triangular wooden splines that are wedged into the mitered joints. The result is a distinguished table of uncommon strength and stability. Expands to seat 10 comfortably.

The Harpswell Chair was originally designed without upholstery at the center of the back. That’s why the crest rail is so deep (five inches deep and sawn from a solid block of wood, in fact). There are three ways to make a curved piece of wood. One way is to laminate a series of strips together. A second way is to steam bend the wood and cure it on a form. The third way is to cut a curved piece from a solid block of wood. This is normally done using a band saw. The gently curved crest rail of the Harpswell Chair is sawn. The chief advantage of Tom’s choice to incorporate a sawn rail into the design is that it showcases the beauty of the wood grain in perfect symmetry. The cushion of the Harpswell Chair is a design known as a slip seat. It is constructed so that the cushion literally sits within the frame. It takes a bit of skill to fit the cushion tight to the frame, which is one more example of the kind of craftsmanship that goes into every piece built in our Maine workshop.

Tom Moser designed the Harpswell Chair in its namesake town of Harpswell, Maine in the late 1990s. He set out to create a round chair with a quarter round back, but he wasn’t happy with the result. After a bit more tinkering, the round seat became a U-shaped seat. Then he wondered if he could add some visual movement to the front legs by making them taper. “Eventually, I added a curve and tapered back leg,” Tom

recalls. “And one day I discovered that the round cafeteria chair I began making in my shop a few years before had morphed into this very pleasing piece I now call the Harpswell Chair.” The only element that’s changed over the years is the addition of the optional back cushion, which is often requested.

HIGH STOOL: cradling comfort The High Stool was first crafted over 30 years ago by Tom Moser in his New Gloucester, Maine workshop. As Tom recently recalled, “When I first developed it, I called it the studio stool, because I felt that it was the cleanest possible place to sit if you were an artist working at a tall easel or a craftsman working at a bench. I’m not sure why we changed it to the High Stool, but somewhere along the way we did.” What’s interesting about the High Stool seat (some customers refer to it as “the tractor seat”) is that the bottom of it is almost as sculpted as the top. The center of the seat has what is called a pommel. This dividing line between both halves (akin to that found on the finely crafted saddles that evoke the term) provides both immediate and lasting comfort. Sculpted from American cherry or walnut, the seat appears to be a single piece of 3" thick wood, but is actually two pieces of carefully selected wood glued side by side. When possible, all sections in the seat come from the same board, to retain a total color match and consistent grain pattern. Four tapered ash legs with stretchers provide extra strength and foot support. The legs extend all the way to the top of the seat for additional strength, and are secured by a mortise and tenon round wedged joint at the top.

High Stool 18, 25-31H x 22W x 20D $975 (for 31", 27" and 25" heights) $875 (for 18" height)

Typically, stool seat heights of 25" work well with counters about 36" high; 27" stools go with 38" surfaces; and 31" stools are used for 42" counters. All of our stools are offered in these three standard seat heights. In addition, we offer two of our most popular stools, the Bowback and High Stool, in an 18" seat height.

The design for the New Gloucester Rocker took shape in 1982. Tom was commissioned to design and build a presentation chair for a group of international businessmen. “It was their annual meeting, and I needed to make 20 rocking chairs—one for each investor,” Tom recalls. Inspired by the aesthetic appeal of the Salem rocker (originated in New England circa 1840), Tom started with an adapted form of the deep, comfortable rocker seat, added his own spindle and arm design to create his first prototype and kept refining from there. The result is a rocker that can be enjoyed by customers of all shapes and ages. New Gloucester Rocker, cherry 39H x 23W x 37D walnut (shown opposite) 39H x 23W x 37D $2,100

Our first decade was one of self discovery for me and for the people who came to Maine to “do wood” for a living. Having eschewed conventional middle class occupations, we followed what was then called an alternative lifestyle. Together we acquired significant skills in fashioning hardwood into furniture. Methodologies were developed, the attitude of mutuality was instilled and a commitment to excellence was passed on to the craftsmen of the 80s, who increasingly were local men and women motivated more by economic necessity than by intellectual interests. We moved the shop to an abandoned meat packing plant in Auburn and set to the task of designing what has since become recognizably Thos. Moser style. We built furniture for every room in the house, including our first foray into the world of upholstery. The showroom was moved to Portland, Maine and our first New Yorker ad appeared toward the end of that decade—we were no longer local, but rather Northeast progeny.

NEW GLOUSTER ROCKER

In the 1980s, we relocated our shop from the Grange Hall in New Gloucester to a former meat packing plant in Auburn. David Moser was tasked with the removal of a hundred yards of concrete as well as three floors of refrigeration.

We use ash to create all of the spindles, because ash is strong and flexible. The design allows the spindles to “give” when a person sits in the chair, literally cradling them in comfort. The arm spindles extend all the way through the arms and are wedged with the same wood as the seat. You can also see this in the legs, where the design lends both strength and beauty.

The arms are made from a single block of wood that is cut in half, ensuring that both arms have color and grain patterns that match. The rockers and the legs are carefully attached to the chair by hand, a process that could never be replicated by a machine. It is very difficult to get that perfect and seamless blending of materials.

pasadena rocker: FLUID INNOVATIONS Pablo Picasso said, “Inspiration does exist, but it must find you working.” While it is true that in a creative field like furniture-making a new design can sometimes emerge spontaneously, fully formed, it is far more common to be on the workbench for some time before the balance and the perfect form in one’s mind emerge. Often, the more original the design, the longer the experimental process. It is our respect for this discipline that allowed David Moser the freedom to build and rebuild our Pasadena designs until he knew they were right. David began exploring the nuances of the chair form several years ago using hand tools in combination with state-of-the-art technology to see what kind of movement he could coax out of solid wood. His intent was to build a quintessentially functional Moser piece with edges and joints that literally flow, and sculptural surfaces that encourage the eye to roam. From that genesis, the entire Pasadena Collection evolved into its sculpted state.

We designed the Pasadena Rocker in consummate Moser fashion, challenging ourselves to coax movement and fluidity from solid wood. The result is a standalone sculptural piece, satisfying the visual senses while offering comfort and a lifetime of service. The editors of Interior Design magazine agree, naming it “Best of Year” in their 2009 design awards. “In the 18-century there was a chair made in England for lolling (laying around),” recalls Tom. “I always liked that word, and figured if they called it a Lolling chair 200 years ago, why not call ours the same today?” As far as the development of the chair is concerned, there was no lolling around at all. Years in the making, our Lolling Chair and Ottoman offer an ideal solution for those who have wished for the pleasures of a recliner but winced at their appearance. Ergonomically shaped to support the curvature of the back and cushioned in thick leather-covered padding, it is the ideal resting place for hours of reading, listening to music, movie marathons or just plain lolling. From the beginning, we used 19th-century furniture building as our template, not only in design—what some call American Primitive—but also in technology. This template included the use of hand tools, many of which had been around for thousands of years. Having mastered these, we slowly acquired more modern tooling, including compressed air-driven hand tools and more sophisticated stationary machinery, including our first numerically controlled five axis carving machine.

By the 1990s, we had extended our offerings to the Contract furniture market. That is, we began to design and build furniture for nonresidential use (academic and public libraries, some healthcare, office and even hospitality installations). It was the New York University Law School library and the public library in Atlantic City that led us to the advantages of Arts and Crafts styling. This coincided with a revival of designs by Gustaf Stickley a century earlier. By now, David increasingly worked in design and Aaron, our third son, took over the Contract responsibilities. As the millennium approached, we were ready and eager to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Learn more about our Contract services on page 74.

LOLLING CHAIR

(See more Dr. White’s on page 75.)

The 1990s kicked off a design partnership between father and son. Twenty years later, Tom and David still actively collaborate on many of our Thos. Moser designs.

In the 1950s, the Heywood Wakefield company in Gardner, Massachusetts made porch furniture out of yellow birch. It included a lounge chair that had an adjustable back which really intrigued Tom. It was unlike any lounge chair he had seen, in that it had a curved frame section that served as both a platform for the cushion and the back legs. Over the years, Tom pondered how to incorporate that curved back leg concept into a completely new design.

To be sure, there were other influences, including the concept of an S-shaped lumbar support, originally developed by Danish designer Hans Wegner as well as the original adjustable back designed by William Morris in the 19th century. Tom improved on Morris’ design by replacing the wooden rod that sat in little trenches in the back of the arm with a brass rod and drilled holes with a spring on one end that holds each rod securely in place. An inlaid piece of brass cradles each rod tip and keeps the wood from being scratched or worn.

chaise: supine relaxation Like all Moser designs, the Chaise was developed entirely in the workshop through iterative steps. There were no computer drawings. Everything sprang forth from a wealth of experience and a shop full of hand tools. The two-position Chaise is uniquely Moser thanks to several interesting design details. The two rails that run continuously from the top crest to the foot are composed of laminated cherry that is carefully matched to present a continuous grain and consistent color to both sides of the chair. The crest is carved out of one solid block of wood that exposes the growth rings in a really beautiful bulls eye pattern. The arms and foot are steam bent from solid wood. The movement of the Chaise is accomplished using a minimum of hardware. We always strive for simplicity. In the case of the Chaise, we fabricated a brass rod cradled by a brass plate that is elegant and will wear indefinitely.

Composed of strong, flitch-cut cherry curves and a moderately padded full-grain leather cushion, it is one of the most inviting, comfortable chairs you will find. Simple gravity gently shifts the chair into its reclined position and back. Chaise

a marriage of craft and technology In sculpture, my greatest challenge is to bring life to an innocuous block of clay, at once creating movement and tension. I sculpted the base of the Kinesis Chair as I was in the middle of sculpting the human form. In thinking of the “star” base my challenge was to make it seamless and continuous such that the whole chair is seen in its entirety; graceful and in motion. Not surprisingly, the result was anthropomorphic. I approached the clay model as if it were the fingers of an outstretched hand. The result is the tautness, not unlike that between the human fingers and extension of strained tendons. The patina process highlights the effect by making this area more opaque as in the effect of spreading the fingers apart.

In 1813, Tabitha Babbitt, of the Harvard Shaker community, invented the circular saw, revolutionizing efficiency gains in craft. Though the Shakers believed in, “hands to work, hearts to God,” their priority was to the sect and higher spiritual awareness. They did not view their goal of efficiency as incongruous to craft because the greatest beneficiary was the community at large. This revolution made possible the time necessary for a greater and more positive social impact to bringing their designs forward. And so goes most innovation and the momentum it marshals into the world. At our core we are creators; we inform the built landscape. Sharing beauty is our enterprise and craftsmanship through innovation is our means. Craftsmanship is at once evolutionary and revolutionary, marked with endless progression calling into question the purity of method. For Moser, our objective is to reconcile artistry, manufacturing and beauty. We are a hybrid of high tech and no tech, of 19th century touch and 21st century technological proficiency. Indeed, we view furniture not only in terms of its functionality, but as sculpture. Our methods are as varied as our forms: to bring forward objects of uncompromising design and complexity of form. By sharing this with as wide an audience as possible requires the same forward thinking and inventiveness of those early craftsmen whose examples continue to inform our work to this day.

The arms of the Kinesis Chair are shaped from three matched pieces of solid wood. The edges are polished until they pour in a seemingly continuous curve that echoes throughout the entire frame and base. In a celebration of complementary materials, a beautifully sculpted star-shaped bronze base—cast at a New Hampshire foundry—provides solid enduring support and grounds the momentum of the piece. Taken as a whole, the Kinesis Chair and Ottoman combine three basic materials that have enriched humanity’s progression from the dawn of civilization: wood, leather and bronze. 800 862 1973 | thosmoser.com

our commitment to sustainability Thos. Moser furniture is principally built from premium-grade American black cherry. Harvested from a sustainable bequest in the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania, our cherry is distinguished by its rich grain figures and a uniquely lustrous surface patina that deepens in color over time. While we avoid exotic wood species due to environmental concerns, we also work with responsibly harvested ash, maple and walnut. When polished and oiled, walnut immediately assumes the deep brown color of bittersweet chocolate, then lightens over the years to a honey brown. Maple, on the other hand, begins the color of pale ivory and over time darkens to an amber hue. Building furniture with these native hardwoods from sustainably managed resources is a fitting embodiment of Shaker community founder Mother Ann Lee’s admonition: “Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live and as if you were to die tomorrow.”

windward living We strive to create forms that are pleasing in themselves—forms that achieve grace through proportion and simplicity rather than embellishment. The ornamentation in our work derives from the exposed architecture of the furniture, such as the hierarchy created in our Windward pieces by the division of space between vertical and horizontal lines. Limited to available wood in short lengths, Asian craftsmen became masters of geometric patterns. The geometry of each Windward sofa back requires 26 separate pieces and 42 precisely fitted mortise-and-tenon joints. The weight-bearing bottom rails, which span the full length of the piece, are strengthened by vertical stiles that serve as I-beams while maintaining visual continuity.

As designer David Moser is fond of saying, “Every furniture design informs those that follow.” The Wing Chair is a prime example that highlights this across centuries. Its lineage can be traced back to the 18th -century’s iconic Queen Anne chair, whose sophisticated silhouette and exceptional comfort made it the most prized seat in an English sitting room. Iconic designs can be reimaginations of past forms and the Wing Chair represents this in wood. The result is unique in its own right, earning a U.S. design patent. Carved from blocks of solid cherry, the arms flow uninterrupted, creating seating of remarkable beauty and comfort. Wing Chair 39H x 28W x 35D $3,700 Wing Footrest 17H x 21W x 15D $1,000

As we toasted the arrival of a new century, who knew we were on the threshold of a dot com bust, the events of 9/11, the ascendance of China, social media and “Dancing with the Stars?” Our company’s growth advanced unabated until the financial crisis that affected all of us. But through it all, we have persevered and are thankful for our continued successes. Some of our most popular designs have come to life in the 21st century as we proudly carry on a tradition of fine craftsmanship, even while more and more box stores and their made in China labels dot the landscape. Thos. Moser builds furniture in Maine, where a highly desired and sought after work ethic prevails. At the risk of hubris, I hold that “Maine made” is the gold standard for fine craftsmanship and material integrity.

It requires the eye of an artist and the skill of a craftsperson to bring out the full art form of the Wing Chair. The curves of the arm are achieved by using three pieces of wood that are glued together, then meticulously shaped with an artist’s precision. Each arm is “coopered” or shaped by the cabinetmaker using a technique that harkens to the days of making wooden barrels from

whence the term came. Before we attach the upholstery, we finish the wood using a catalyzed lacquer that is somewhat translucent, to bring out the depth of the wood grain. It has the appearance of an oil and wax finish, but is a better choice for pieces with upholstery permanently attached because there is no need to apply a penetrating finish in proximity to the fabric. 800 862 1973 | thosmoser.com

wing living Derived from the 18th-century Queen Anne model, our Wing Chair brings fresh relevance to an old form. Cradling the spine, the Wing Chair is made even more comfortable by the addition of upholstery. Four-inch-thick cushions envelop the sitter, while carved and polished solid cherry armrests gently support at just the right height. green sustainable indeed We protect the environment by building furniture crafted to last a lifetime or longer. We do it by using materials that are sustainable. We do this and more. Our commitment to sustainability continues to this day. We only use American hardwoods in building our furniture, mostly black cherry, but walnut and others, as well. We buy wood from suppliers who are certified by either the Forest Stewardship Council or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. According to the U.S Forest Service, black cherry, along with most other Appalachian hardwoods, is growing faster than it is being harvested. Our finish is still predominantly boiled linseed oil and wax made from carnauba beans and beeswax, both quite benign. Our delivery process is just as calculated as the harvesting and building, as each piece is wrapped in a reusable packing blanket, thus eliminating the need for copious amounts of packing materials. Our entire process is very green, indeed.

sleigh bed: stature & grace The design of the Sleigh Bed originated in France in 1840. Emblematic of the period, the headboard and footboard were huge in scale. They were also symmetrical, such that you could sleep with your head on either end. We designed our Sleigh Bed with a substantial three-inch rail across the headboard and footboard to create a sense of permanence and elegance. It’s a comfortable bed that is an enduring customer favorite. To achieve the signature curve of the Sleigh Bed, we create laminated panels that are veneered on both the inside and outside of the bed. Moser cabinetmakers are very selective when it comes to how the veneer is laid up and matched to ensure the grain patterns are uniform and exemplify the quality of craftsmanship throughout. The Sleigh Bed is available with a headboard and footboard or in a headboard-only style.

The case is braced at the bottom by a steel elbow and will not rock when drawers are moved in and out. The traditional handles are imported directly from Japan. (shown above) 54H x 38W x 23D

custom built for the individual From the beginning, we have made custom one-of-a-kind furniture and we continue to enjoy the challenges this presents. Today many of those custom pieces are now standard designs in our catalog. We also continue to offer custom pieces upon request. We can modify the length, width and height of our pieces—or customize drawers and shelving to meet your precise requirements. Case pieces can be customized to create media storage that won’t overwhelm the rest of your room. Beds can be made for platform mattresses or lower footboards. If you require a unique design, we’ll work with you to draw the piece and engineer it for strength. If you prefer another species of wood, we can substitute almost any native hardwood of your choice. With everything we do, custom or standard, we intend to provide you with an heirloom.

Moser Contract: Libraries to Law Offices While many of our customers know us exclusively through our handcrafted residential collections, we have also earned a growing reputation for our exceptional contract work. Libraries, offices, public spaces and hospitality settings are natural homes for our work, where rigorous use and functional beauty necessarily go hand-in-hand. Like all our work, our contract furniture is designed to transcend fleeting trends, and to withstand generations of use. In commercial and public environments, true economy comes not through short-term savings—but through longevity. Each item we make for our contract clients satisfies the need for traditional elegance and a true sense of permanence, where age only enhances its grace and dignity. Our entry to the contract market began in the late 1970s when a well-known Portland architect commissioned us to design and outfit the Margaret Chase Smith Archive Library in Skowhegan, Maine. While the furniture came directly from our catalog, the logistics and scale of the project was new to us. Stakeholders included contractors, architects, donors and purchasers, and each brought distinctly different perspectives to the demands of the project. Through a combination of diligence and commitment on the part of our craftsmen, the project installed on time, and proved thoroughly rewarding—for all involved. This marked the beginning of a 35-year journey into the contract and library market, and led us from one prestigious project to another. By the mid 1980s, our contract work had attained a national following. A group of Dallas-based architects contacted us for help with the design and furnishing of the Dallas Hall of State’s Deally Archive Library. The design collaboration yielded our first Arts and Crafts collection, and exposed more of our work to the design community in the Southwest.

In the 1990s, academic library growth accelerated, and our reputation grew. Projects during that era ranged from small, specialty reading rooms to large 1,000-seat learning resource centers. We gradually entered the west coast market, and were honored to provide major project furnishings for UCLA, Cal Tech, and many significant academic and corporate installations. Today, we are in the process of completing one of our most significant achievements. Spanning the last ten years, the multimillion dollar libraries at the University of Georgia have become home to the largest installation of our furniture to date. In late January of 2012, our replica of the Senator Richard Russell Conference table will be a prized addition to their growing collection of Moser furniture. At Thos. Moser, we find enormous satisfaction in crafting furniture that provides both visceral satisfaction and the potential for generations of regular use—whether in residential, commercial or public environments. With our unique combination of skilled craftsmanship, unlimited customization abilities and complex project management, we welcome the opportunity to partner with you for any project—no matter how great or small.

Create your own Heirloom What began as a special request from a customer to come to our shop and participate in the creation of a desk, has become a full-fledged program that has attracted participants from around the world. Our Customer in Residence program gives our customers the opportunity to come to Maine and spend a week building their own heirloom piece under the guidance of a mentoring cabinetmaker. The Customer in Residence program is a week-long intensive internship for our customers who want to experience the process and satisfaction of building Moser furniture for themselves. Each participant works in our shop alongside a master cabinetmaker who will assist in the selection of raw materials and the crafting of a hallmark Moser piece. The participant will learn about the intricacies of joinery, the shaping and molding of solid cherry and even how to bring out the natural luster of wood with the right amount of wax and elbow grease. All Customers-in-Residence will share their workshop experiences on a daily basis and enjoy two special group dinners with fellow attendees. In short, our program is designed to provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for woodworkers of all abilities to polish their craft. The itinerary for the week-long CIR program varies slightly from session to session, but generally the highlights include: • 30 hours of shop time to create a one-of-a kind piece based on Thos. Moser designs • tool/equipment use and safety training • “lunch and learn” presentations covering various aspects of fine woodworking • a visit with Tom Moser • a trip to the Grange Hall in nearby New Gloucester that housed Tom’s first studio Participants stay at the renowned Harraseeket Inn in Freeport and have dinner at some of the area’s best restaurants. There will also be ample free time to explore Freeport and the Thos. Moser flagship showroom, as well as to visit Portland and surrounding areas. Each Customer in Residence session ends with a special ceremony during which participants and their Thos. Moser partner sign the piece they have built.
