We hung out... ... there’s a huge thatched roof terrace that looks out over the view. Just off to the side is what they like to call “the swimming pool”.... but it’s more like a bathtub for six... so small it’s sweet! They fi ll it twice a day with fresh spring water. This is where everybody hangs out... on the terrace... in the pool or on the patio. People are reading, writing... doing internet, playing dominoes or just talking. But more often than not, people are just sitting and staring... out over that most amazing view...
Located on the first inland ridge, perched on a mountain1,000 feet above sea level, Tubagua is pure countryside, yet only 20 minutes from city, beaches and airport
We ate...
From essential to vegetarian to gourmet, meals are discussed at time of booking according to the needs and budget of the group, on a cost per person per day basis
... they’d cook for ... they’d cook for us in an open kitchen on a wood-fi red stove and grill made of clay. The kitchen sits in the middle of its own herb and vegetable garden and they’d pick the fresh ingredients that go right into the pot. We’d hang out watching them cook... of course the guys all wanted to show off their “expertise” on the grill. We had a lot of authentic Dominican food mixed with a few familiar “back-home” tastes, “just so we don’t get homesick”, they’d say... It’s amazing how such good food can come out of such a
simple kitchen!
We slept... ... under mosquito nets on rough-hewn beds in thatch-roofed palapas with canvas walls. We didn’t need air conditioning because the air was fresh and mountaincool... the beds were comfy and the blankets cozy... sort of like camping in luxury... and we slept like babies... except the roosters woke us up early, until we got used to them...
Sleeping can be arranged as 10 private, double quarters with queen-size beds or as shared quarters with up to 30 single beds, or a combination.
We explored.... ...down the road a way there’s a zip line ride... a bit touristy but fun anyway. We did some trekking, and actually rode on an ancient sugar cane wagon through the sugar plantations all the way to a deserted beach... just for us! There’s all kinds of things to do... horseback riding, river tubing, canyoning, sailing, kitesurfi ng, motocrossing, whitewater rafting... but there just wasn’t enough time... The best part was actually just the trekking... down country roads, through farms, patting cows, picking fruits... passing through tiny villages... stopping at people’s houses... one lady made us coffee by fi ltering it through what looked like an old stained sock!.... rich and sweet, it was the best coffee ever! ...here we were, just 20 minutes from where we got off the plane... but it felt like we’d gone into another century! We can help plan an itenerary of activities or assist with your travel or project logistics as required
The neighbors... ...were part of our daily life. This place is part of a real village and everybody there really made us feel welcome... We’d visit the fruit stand guy who would slice open our coconuts for us... stroll over to the local bar for some “música típica”...they all seemed happy to have us around and to show us how they live and do things. The ones who work here seemed to really appreciate the plantation and the opportunities it is providing in the area.
The retreat draws you into an authentic Dominican life experience while providing the safety and amenities required by responsible institutions
After 25 years living in the Dominican Republic, Tubagua has brought me back to the simple, sensational destination I came upon, back when nobody even knew where the Dominican Republic was... It’s a pleasure and a blessing to have found such an aweinspiring place and to be able to share it with you.. Tim Hall, Prop.
