Historic Corolla
Discover Historic Corolla Park
Point of View
ith it’s wide open green spaces and scenic views, Historic Corolla Park is the centerpiece of Corolla, on the Currituck Outer Banks in Northeastern North Carolina. It’s a great place to take in a seasonal event or simply take a relaxing walk, and is home to three unique landmarks — Whalehead, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Whalehead... In the heart of the park Whalehead in Historic Corolla is a 1920s era Art Nouveau architectural masterpiece, museum and the centerpiece of what has come to be called Historic Corolla Park. Whalehead’s intriguing past is steeped in the storied roaring ‘20s lifestyle of its patriarch and matriarch, Edward Collins Knight Jr. and his wife. Tours and exhibits are offered daily.
The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education houses models of hunting and fishing boats, a duck blind, a million-dollar decoy collection and a well-rounded bounty of exhibits on both the natural and wildlife history of the area. Offering educational programs to visitors of all ages, the center sits between the Atlantic ocean and the Currituck Sound, on the edge of the waters that helped put the Outer Banks on the map for waterfowl hunting at the turn of the 20th century.
on the Currituck Outer Banks The Currituck Beach Lighthouse Towering above the northern Outer Banks landscape of Historic Corolla Park, visitors can climb the winding 220-step staircase of this red-brick lighthouse for panoramic views of the Currituck Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and the greater Currituck Outer Banks area. Inside the lighthouse and it’s landings there are exhibits on the history of coastal lighthouses, shipwrecks and the lighthouse keepers.
Historic Corolla Village Historic Corolla Village is a unique pedestrian experience well within walking distance of Historic Corolla Park. Stroll down the narrow roads and pause to listen, read the signage about the buildings and you’ll feel connected to the original inhabitants. While the Village offers food and shopping, it’s far from a shopping center. All the shop owners know and easily share their unique stories and what they sell gives you a sense of place as well as community and reflects a simpler time.

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS
T
ourism is our lifeline on this itsy bitsy stretch of sand we locals call home. We are, as I like to say, literally on the road to nowhere…and yet year after year our community is bursting at the seams with what appears to be an exponentially growing number of tourists who love what they find at the end of the road. Some of you are first timers, many are repeat guests who have been coming here since childhood and others like to consider this their home away from home. You come solo, in pairs, in groups of four or 40. Some of you blend in so well that the only give away is your license plate lacks the “OBX” signature, while others give away your “out of town” status simply by the number of OBX logos you’re sporting.
Whatever your tourist status may be, you are our guests and we are at your service. Most of us were once visitors to the Outer Banks ourselves and chances are, if we find ourselves in the middle of your city on vacation one day, we may be looking to you for a few pointers, too – and perhaps some tips on how to make us look …..perhaps, not so touristy? As you make your way across that bridge onto the Outer Banks, you may be entering a foreign environment, or at least one you haven’t seen in a while. SO consider this a study guide, cheat sheet, checklist…or whatever you want to call it. From traffic and ocean temperature to sunscreen and crosswalks, here are some tips straight from the locals. We hope it helps. Enjoy your stay on this stretch of land we call home.
When asked directions, a typical response by a local may go something like this: “Go about three or five miles north, look for the big red house with the imported palm trees, and it’s your next left after that.” As for those mile markers, we call them mileposts, but it’s cool – just know that this is basically all the direction you need. Milepost markers are used for directional purposes and are found along N.C. 12 (the beach road) and U.S. 158 (the bypass) and are posted every halfmile until you reach Hatteras Village. Along with “it’s on the beach road” or “it’s on the bypass,” you’ll find that milepost markers are the primary way for us locals to give directions. And if you can remember the ocean is to the East and that we only have two roads off of which to make any possible turns that are clearly marked, you’re gonna make it to your destination – we promise.
The Dreaded Turning Lane
The turning lane on the bypass is a touchy subject among the locals and is also adorably known to locals as the suicide lane. The bypass, or U.S. 158, runs from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head with two southbound lanes and two northbound lanes. There’s one lane in the middle, and it’s not a HOV lane, a U-turn lane, or the way to avoid long lines of traffic on Saturdays. It’s used to merge into, slow to a stop, and then turn either east or west to get to your destination. We know. It takes some getting used to, and there’s a lot to see on either side.
Life’s a Beach
Ahh…finally…that moment you cross over the dunes and see the Atlantic Ocean stretched out before you for the first time. It’s easy to throw caution and common sense to the wind. But remember that while there’s so much to enjoy when it comes to the sun, sand and surf, there are also precautions. And there’s perhaps no better place to spot a tourist than on the beach. Let’s talk sun first. We cringe for you – friends we haven’t met yet – when we see those terrible, awful, horribly painful-looking sunburns. The reflection of the sun’s rays off the sand and water make the beach a prime spot for getting sunburned. Always use a mineral-based, water resistant sunscreen that has full-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Next up are shoes. The sand gets scorching hot, so always slip on some flip flops before heading over the dunes. But lose those water shoes. They are a dead give-away when it comes to spotting a tourist, not to mention they can inhibit your ability when it comes to swimming in the ocean. What’s up with the flags? Nobody likes to walk over the dunes ready for a day at the beach and see the dreaded red flags flying. Red flags are erected on the beach to indicate that swimming is prohibited. Ocean rescue personnel consider the current ocean conditions and forecast when deciding whether to fly these flags. Red flag days are the perfect opportunity to go shopping, visit local tourist attractions, or head to the sound side or pool. If you see a yellow flag flying as you head over the dunes, it means that there are powerful rip currents in that location. Lifeguards place these on the beach directly in front of these strong channels of water that can pull 2017 | DUCKCOROLLAOBX.COM

swimmers and those on floatation out to sea. It’s important to not swim in front of or on either side of the flags. Lifeguards. They are there to help you, and possibly save your life if you get in trouble. Always, always swim near a lifeguard and ask them questions if you are not sure. Before you start your beach day, check their advisory board located on each lifeguard stand to learn more about the day’s conditions, such as tides, ocean conditions and water temperature. Speaking of water temperature, our ocean doesn’t just get warm and stay that way throughout the summer. Much to many tourists’ (and locals) dismay, it can be a pleasant 80 degrees and then plummet 15 degrees overnight. The culprit? Wind and ocean currents. When the wind moves offshore, it blows all the warm surface water with it and we are left with the colder bottom water. When wind blows onshore, it blows warm water in. Keep in mind that rip currents are more common with onshore winds, and at low tide. Strong shore break is more likely at high tide and ocean goers should use caution entering and exiting the ocean. Check out obxbeachaccess.com for all the lifeguarded beaches on the Outer Banks.
Fireworks are Illegal – even on the Fourth of July
Yes, of course. It’s always a celebration at the beach, but leave the pyrotechnics to the experts. Any fireworks that leave the ground are illegal in North Carolina, and on Hatteras, in Southern Shores and the Town of Duck, even sparklers are prohibited. Don’t ruin your vacation with a town violation, a trip to the ER or worse, a house fire.
Stop at the Crosswalk
Drivers should always yield to pedestrians, but it’s the law in North Carolina to yield to pedestrians at designated crosswalks. People use the beach road every day to get to and from the beach. They also walk their dogs, jog, or bike along the extended shoulders. Use extreme caution, particularly during the summer months, while driving on the beach road due to the enormous increase in pedestrian traffic, particularly children who may be eager to get to the beach and not be paying attention to the roadway.

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS | 2017
You are not just on vacation, folks. You are vacationing on the Outer Banks. That means that you are likely noticing that life moves at a slower pace. Some of us even talk slower than you, and we don’t seem to be in that much of a hurry most of the time. You’re on island time now, so kick back and enjoy. Our clocks don’t always jive, so if we say, “See you at 3 o’clock,” what we really mean is that we will see you around 3, which could really mean anywhere between 3 and 3:59. We are occasionally early, but rarely more than an hour late. And you might as well get used to those Gone Fishin’ and Gone Surfin’ signs. Are we serious? You betcha. You will find these signs regularly hung on doors of locally run businesses on days when the surf is good or a school of fish is running. That might sound like a cliché, but when we work indoors all summer in a tourist town and happen to BE surfers or avid catchers of the fishes, then closing up shop for an hour or two here and there just may be the key to our sanity… and will also guarantee you a more pleasant experience when (and we truly hope that you do) visit that same shop next time – as the ocean soothes our savage sides just as much as it does yours. We at Three Dog Ink Media hope this guide helps and wish you fun in the sun on your Outer Banks vacation! Lindsey is a mom of three, freelance writer, kids yoga instructor, and active community volunteer. She has called the Outer Banks home since 1995, and if she knew what spare time meant to moms it is certain she’d have a fabulous list of hobbies to fill it!

Jockey’s Ridge State Park
There’s bound to come a day in every vacation that you need a break from all that fun in the sun. That’s the perfect time to pack up the car and hit the road to experience some of the remarkable places that help to make the Outer Banks the greatest vacation destination on the East Coast. Whether you make a day trip out of it, or just take to the road for an afternoon of exploring, be sure to check out these beautiful landmarks on your journey. You’ll be glad you did.
A visit to the Outer Banks isn’t complete without a trip to Jockey’s Ridge, the tallest active sand dune in the eastern United States. Slip off your shoes when the sun starts dipping down into the Roanoke Sound and treat yourself to amazing views of the ocean and sound from the top. Participate in an interpretive ranger-led program, try your hand at wind sports such as hang gliding or come and fly a kite. Jockey’s Ridge is an experience any time of day you visit. Let your children explore these dunes by running or sliding down the steeper slopes, or hike to the soundside beach. Don’t forget to stop by the visitors’ center to learn more about these amazing dunes and the animals that call it home. ■ 300 Carolista Dr., Nags Head • jockeysridgestatepark.com
Dolphin Tours
Wright Brothers National Memorial More than 100 years ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright proved to the world that man could fly. And they did it right here on the Outer Banks with the first successful airplane flights on Dec. 17, 1903. Enormous sand dunes, steady winds and wide open spaces drew the Ohio brothers to our shores. To commemorate their achievement, this massive monument in Kill Devil Hills marks the exact location where the brothers made history. Visitors can explore the aviation museum adjacent to the monument, view replicas of the 1902 and 1903 gliders, and climb the historic hill. Remember to check out the “hanger talk” with one of the National Park Service rangers. It’s an experience the whole family will enjoy. Note: The Visitor Center will be closed until the late summer of 2018, however, the grounds and outdoor exhibits are open. ■ 1000 N Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills • nps.gov/wrbr

Corolla Wild Horses The Corolla wild horses were some of the first settlers on the Outer Banks! Originally left behind by explorers nearly 500 years ago, these horses are of Spanish decent and were recently recognized as the state horse of North Carolina. Known for their hardiness, the horses have weathered centuries of storms and feed on the salty marsh grasses native to this area. Current herd size fluctuates between 120 and 150 individuals. They roam freely north of Corolla, in an area that is accessible only by 4WD. There are several tour companies that offer excursions in search of the horses, or if you have a suitable vehicle you can strike out on your own. Just remember that the horses are wild and very unpredictable. It is illegal to feed or come within 50 feet of them, so be sure to bring a zoom lens! For more information: corollawildhorses.com

S FE BEACH At The Staying 36
Sun, sand and surf. These are what draw thousands of visitors to our shores every year. But these are the very things that can put a cramp in your vacation. Follow these common sense safety tips so you can be sure your vacation will be all about fun in the sun. Swim Near A Lifeguard
According to the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), rip currents account for at least 100 deaths each year in the United States, and more than 80 percent of all ocean rescues are related to rip currents. The most important precaution you can take when it comes to rip currents, is to swim near a lifeguard. The chances of drowning at a beach with a USLA affiliated lifeguard are 1 in 18 million. Check with lifeguards about potential hazards. They can advise you on the safest places to swim. Go to obxbeachaccess.com to find beach accesses with lifeguards.
Rip Currents
Rip currents can materialize quickly on the Outer Banks. These powerful channels of water extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone and past the line of breaking waves. Signs of a rip current include churning, choppy water, an area that has a notable difference in the color of the water, or a line of foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily seaward. Rip currents often occur where there is a break in the incoming wave pattern. If you find yourself being pulled seaward, stay calm and don’t fight the current. If you are able to, swim in a direction following the shoreline. When you are free of the current, swim at an angle, away from the current and toward shore. If you are unable to escape by swimming, float or tread water and when the current weakens, call or wave for help. To learn more, visit ripcurrents.noaa.gov.

Heat Exhaustion
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States. Heat exhaustion – dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, profuse sweating, nausea and/or rapid heartbeat – is a serious condition that should not be ignored. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler location, apply cool wet clothes to your skin and sip water. If symptoms do not improve, a person should be examined by a health professional to make sure that heat stroke, which can be deadly, is not developing. To prevent heat-related illnesses, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and seek shade during hot weather.

Hot sand
In the summertime, it’s estimated that sand temperatures can reach as high as 120 degrees. Third degree burns occur when water temperatures approach 130 degrees, so you can only imagine what that hot sand is doing to the bottom of your feet, even if you sprint for the water. Always wear shoes when you come to the beach. While it may be cool when you arrive in the morning, by mid-day the sand could be scorching. Remember that kids are even more sensitive to the temperatures and be careful with pets, too. Consider leaving the pups at home during the heat of the day.
Sunburn
Unfortunately, sunburned tourists are a common sight in the summer. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays, increasing your risk of a sunburn. Remember that the sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so be sure you have shade available, especially for the little ones. Sunscreen is a must. Look for one that is water resistant (and remember to reapply), protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and has an SPF of 30 or higher. A bad sunburn has the potential to ruin the rest of your vacation, not to mention the health risks that are associated with overexposure.
other things to remember while visiting the Outer Banks:
• Pick up your belongings when you leave the beach for the day. Also be sure to fill in any holes you may have dug as they are dangerous to both wildlife and human beachgoers, especially at night. Take a designated trash bag with you and be sure to remove any litter when you go. Clean beaches are healthy beaches!
• It is illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of the Corolla wild horses. They are unpredictable and dangerous, and best viewed from afar. It is also illegal to feed the horses. Unnatural food items can harm or even kill the horses, and it makes them more likely to seek out humans for food. A good rule of thumb for all wildlife is to be respectful and keep your distance - Outer Banks ecology is fragile!
Stay safe and happy during your vacation by adhering to these simple tips. Most Outer Banks towns have websites outlining local rules and regulations, so if you’re in doubt - do a little research. Always err on the side of caution so you can be sure that you and your family have a wonderful stay. Enjoy!

BOOKS to Fill Your Beach Bag
Welcome back, reading friends! A new season of sun on our shores means a fresh crop of fun, enlightening, comforting, and beautiful books to fill your beach bag with, grace your table and get lost in while enjoying our sparkling beaches.
By MEAGHAN BEASLEY
Start your visit with Living at the Water’s Edge: A Heritage Guide to the Outer Banks Byway by Barbara Garrity-Blake and Karen Willis Amspacher (Paperback, $22.00, UNC Press, 2017). While the term “guidebook” could be applied here, Living at the Water’s Edge strives to carry the reader along their journey up and down our barrier islands by sharing stories from the villages and people who’ve long populated our shores. Starting at Whalebone Junction and moving south, Garrity-Blake and Amspacher have collected the memories of locals, including those whose families began life on the beaches as fishermen and still remember mail-ferry deliveries twice a week. The book’s authors present these stories so that readers can almost see the past right where they stand. The authors encourage visitors to drive leisurely down NC12, stopping often to take in the sights while reading a story or two about the heritage and history of the area around them.
We’re always proud to tout the success of one of our locals. In the autobiographical fiction A Smile in One Eye, a Tear in the Other (Paperback, $15.95, CreateSpace, 2016), Ralph Webster shares the story of Wobsters, a happy family living in Prussia when Hitler comes to power. Though christened Lutheran, the fact of Judaism in their ancestral heritage makes the family prime targets in the rounding up of “undesirables” throughout Germany. Forced to flee their home in order to survive, they become refugees seeking a new home that will accept them. Both historically significant and timely, A Smile in One Eye has been on the list of every local book club on the beach this past winter. For those on the lookout for a special title to add to your book list back home, this is definitely one to pick up.
Professional photographers, and amateurs alike, flock to our shores to capture the beauty of a perfect pink and purple sunrise, a special shot of our local wildlife, and the turbulent wrath sometimes wrought by Mother Nature. In North Carolina’s Barrier Islands: Wonders of Sand, Sea, and Sky (Hardcover, $35.00, UNC Press, 2017), North Carolina nature photographer and forest ecologist, David Blevins, shares a must-have collection of photos worthy of prime real estate on your coffee table. Atmospheric, striking, vibrant and colorful, North Carolina’s Barrier Islands features more than 150 photos from the Currituck Banks, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and the southern barrier islands of our state. An ecologist, Blevins strives not only to capture the eye, but in doing so, draws attention to the conservation needs of our land, and the precious animals that populate it.
The Lost Colony of Roanoke is a mystery for the ages, piquing the curiosity of all who’ve heard the tale of Englishman John White and his failed attempt to start a colony on our shores, only to find it abandoned after a three-year supply run to England. What happened to those souls and where they ended up has been the speculation of historians for centuries. And while archaeologists believe they may have finally found the answer, the imagination can’t help but fill in the gaps. Author Ed Gray offers his theory in the latest historical novel to tackle the mystery, Left in the Wind: The Roanoke Journal of Emme Merrimoth (Paperback, $15.95, Pegasus Books, 2017). Told from the point of view of Emme, a self-proclaimed harlot who finds herself the paramour of the famous White, Gray paints a tale of an impulsive and quick-tempered leader who quickly leads his people into conflict with the local Native Americans, and whose situation on Roanoke Island rapidly spirals out of control. Emme’s voice is smart, quick-witted, and wise, making Left in the Wind an easy read in which to lose oneself for hours on the beach.
Don’t forget about your little bookworms, who love to curl up with a book on vacation as much as you do. For the children in your life, the beautifully illustrated Madeline Finn and The Library Dog (Hardcover, $16.95, Peachtree Publishers) has become a bookseller favorite since its late-2016 release and is geared for ages 5 to 8. Madeline Finn hates reading, especially out loud. She trips and stumbles over words and is often laughed at by her classmates. One day her mother drags her to the library (her least-favorite place in the world) only to find a special reading group for children – and a group of dogs await, ready to be read to. Madeline finds a fluffy white giant named Bonnie who sits patiently while she struggles to read out loud. But Bonnie’s silence is non-judgmental and encourages Madeline to try. Madeline Finn is a wonderful book, not just for reluctant readers, but for any child who is struggling to overcome a challenge and needs a little encouragement.
For those collectors out there, Suzanne Tate has another installment in her Outer Banks Nature Series for Children (Paperback, $5.95, Nags Head Art). The variety and sources of wildlife on our shores never cease, and neither does Suzanne’s dedication to seeking out and featuring animals in accessible books that entertain and educate (like hiding veggies in macaroni and cheese). Her latest, Timmy T. Frog, is the winsome tale of a tree frog – a fun and fascinating tiny bright green creature which can be found all over the Outer Banks. Just look under your patio umbrella or on your windows on a humid night. Meaghan Beasley has been lucky enough to be a bookseller and children’s book buyer at The Island Bookstore for more than 13 years.

t’s that time of year again, when you finally get to make your annual family trip to the Outer Banks, and just like every year, you have an amazing time but you dread leaving. On the ride home, you find yourself entertaining the idea you’ve all had in your heads for years…”Why don’t we buy our own home on the Outer Banks?” According to local real estate professionals, a lot of home buying on the Outer Banks begins this way. “It is common for long-time renters to buy on the OBX,” said Douglas Brindley, owner, president and general manager of Brindley Beach Vacations and Sales. “I had a renter from New Jersey who, after renting, bought a place in Duck, then sold and bought in Corolla. Years later, his daughter also bought a home in Corolla,” Brindley said. This is a common occurrence, as many visitors to the area become repeat renters and upon falling in love with the different alluring aspects of the Outer Banks, decide to buy a second home, a retirement home, or to ultimately make a permanent move to the OBX altogether. There are numerous facets of the Outer Banks that captivate vacationers every year – as a place where unforgettable childhood memories are created, once-in-a-lifetime events are held, and where generation after generation bring their families to share in what they have over the years come to love as a home away from home. So it’s easy to see how vacationers end up buying homes on the Outer Banks, some after their very first trip, and others after putting some long hard thought into it. But nevertheless, many of them end up here! The Outer Banks sells itself, according to Brindley. With the ample amount of things to do for families, it also offers a wide variety of homes and locales to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a sound side retreat, a lavish oceanfront home, or a tucked-away bungalow, the Outer Banks is sure to have just what you want. “The OBX is fully a family resort area,” Brindley said. “This is very different from locations north of North Carolina. There are a full range of property values and locations [here]. The rental industry is established and has been branded long before Al Gore invented the Internet,” Brindley said with a laugh. A lot goes into making the transition from vacationer to full-time Outer Banks homeowner, however, and an experienced rental and sales team is essential in helping buyers make one of the biggest moves of their lives. Guidance from professionals is crucial when you decide to make the leap.

“Advice comes well before the questions,” said Brindley about helping new homeowners understand the process of buying a new Outer Banks home and for some, putting it into a rental program. “Always rely only on the existing cash flow,” Brindley advises his clients, and “do not expect to own a home without ever maintaining and upgrading the home.” Also, it is important to “understand there will be a negative cash flow. Always plan an exit strategy when first buying,” Brindley recommends. Brindley Beach Vacations continues to offer its vacation renters beautiful homes to choose from, and moving forward, provides its new homeowners support as well as continued assistance in understanding the renting process to facilitate their client’s entry into the rental program. “The help from Brindley Beach Vacations is to deliver outstanding service to make the rental guest happy with a great vacation experience,” Brindley said. “Brindley Beach Vacations has a renovation/ restoration construction group to keep their homes updated as well,” he added. “I tell new owners the sustainable competitive

ogs love our beaches and luckily, the Outer Banks loves our canine friends just as much! Every dog is a beach dog once they arrive over that bridge with their tails wagging. Our pups are a big part of our lives and you’re sure to encounter dogs just about everywhere you go while you are here on vacation. You’ll see doggie water dishes outside of stores and restaurants, dogs riding and walking with their people, and of course lots of four-legged fun on the beach. But there are a few things to know if your dog is vacationing with you. Here’s a rundown on tips, regulations and other useful information so your pooch can have as much fun on the Outer Banks as you do!

From north to south, here’s a breakdown on the leash laws by area or town:
Love Your Vacation
›› In Corolla, dogs are allowed year round on the beach and at the Whalehead Club’s Heritage Park, but they must be on a leash. ›› In Duck, there are no leash laws on town beaches, however dogs must be supervised and under control at all times. Dogs must be leashed throughout town including the park, boardwalk and Duck Trail.
Find the perfect beach access for your occasion
›› In Southern Shores, dogs must be on a leash year round on the beach and during the season, can only be on the beach (leashed) before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
obxbeachaccess.com
›› In Kitty Hawk, dogs on the beach must be on a leash from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer. After Labor Day, Fido may run on the beaches of Kitty Hawk leash free only if they can stay within 30 feet of their owner. ›› In Kill Devil Hills, dogs are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the summer months and must be leashed at all other times. ›› In Nags Head, pets are welcome at any time as long as they are leashed. ›› On Hatteras Island, including Rodanthe, Waves, Avon and Salvo, leashed dogs are allowed with the exception of some designated swim beaches. You can find more detailed information about regulations in each town by visiting their websites. Unless your dog is extremely obedient and comes when called, it’s probably a wise idea to keep him leashed at all times. This is for your dog’s safety as well as the safety of other people and pets on the beach. Your dog is in a strange environment, with new sounds and smells, and may be more likely to run off or behave differently than he does at home. It’s great if your dog is friendly, but not every other dog on the beach plays 54

well with others. Large, excited dogs can scare little kids and most people wouldn’t want a sandy, wet, slobbery pooch interrupting their beach nap. Just remember, if someone asks you to call your dog, you yelling “he’s friendly” while Rover happily ignores you won’t prevent a fight from happening or keep your 110-pound Goldendoodle from knocking over a toddler. Another important thing to remember before you bring your pet on vacation is that it can get very hot in the summer, especially on the beach! The sand can reach temperatures of 120 degrees at mid-day. If it hurts you to walk across it, you know your pooch is going to be hating it, too. A simple way to test the temperature of the ground is to place the back of your hand on the pavement/sidewalk/sand for five seconds. If it’s too hot to leave your hand there for that long, it’s too hot for your dog. Their paw pads can burn and blister, which could require an ER vet visit and result in a very miserable dog. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from heatstroke. This can cause major organ damage and even death if not addressed quickly. Signs to look for are excessive panting and drooling, wobbly (drunk-looking, disoriented) movement, vomiting, and a rapid heart rate. Dehydration is also common in the summer, especially if your dog ingests too much salt water or sand. Be sure to keep cool, clean, fresh water readily available at all times. Overweight dogs, the very young and very old, and breeds with long hair or flat-faces (like pugs and bulldogs) are at a higher risk of heat stroke. Last but not least, pick up the poop! Dog poop is a huge pollutant. Letting the ocean wash it away or covering it with sand is bad for the environment. Many public beach accesses have stations with bags and trashcans, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own clean up bags. Keep in mind that most locals (and tourists, too!) will call you out if they see you leaving the poop behind. Not only is it really unpleasant to step in or lay your beach towel next to, it is also full of bacteria that can be harmful to both people and wildlife. If you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll discover that the Outer Banks is the perfect place to visit with your four-legged pal! Miles of beaches, trails, walking paths, and parks make it simple and fun to get out and explore with your best friend. You’re likely to find a cafe or two that will welcome your pooch on their outdoor patio, and many of our shops even have souvenirs for Fido as well. More and more of our rental homes and hotels are becoming pet friendly, making it easier than ever to bring your canine buddy along with you on vacation. There’s no reason to leave your dog at home anymore, and as long as you play it safe and are respectful of our unique local environment, you’re both sure to have a tail waggin’ good time! 2017 | DUCKCOROLLAOBX.COM
