Red Flag Day on the Outer Banks: Story by GREG SMRDEL
Y
What to do. What. To. Do...
ou pack up your beach umbrella, beach chairs, beach blanket, cooler and your kids, and you head down to the water’s edge for a day spent on the sand and in the ocean. The perfect beach vacation day. But then you get there only to discover a red flag flying! What does that mean? According to Dare County’s website, “if red flags are flying, swimming is prohibited.” The flags are posted not only for your safety but also for the safety of the ocean rescue staff. It may seem weird that a red flag might be flying when it is sunny and warm with blue skies overhead, but water conditions may still be dangerous. For example, think riptide. It is important to remember, if there is a red flag, that doesn’t mean the beach is closed. It just means the water is off-limits. You can still spend the day soaking up vitamin D from the sun, building a sand castle with the kids, playing volleyball or frisbee, you just can’t go in the water. There are plenty of other things that can be done off the beach during red flag days while on the Outer Banks. Sure, there’s souvenir shopping, but there’s much more than that to consider. Here are a few of those ideas: 6
DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS
The Sound
Try out the sound. It could be that it may be too dangerous to swim in the ocean, but on the other side of our barrier island you may find calmer and safer waters for you and your kids to splash around in. Visit obxbeachaccess.com/outer-banks-sound-access for more information.
Wild horses
I’m sure you’ve heard about the wild horses in Corolla. If you and the kids can’t go in the water, now may be a great time to check out the feral Spanish mustangs that live just north of Corolla in the 4-wheeled drive section of the beach. They are the direct descendants of shipwrecked horses from hundreds of years ago. Just remember please don’t touch or feed the horses. In fact there is a county ordinance making it illegal to come within 50 feet of them. Don't have a 4X4 vehicle and still want to visit the wild horses? Don't fret! There are several horse tour companies you can use. Check them out in our Mild to Wild section of this publication.
jockey's Ridge State park
You can also visit the tallest natural sand dune on the east coast. You’ll find that at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. It’s a 426 acre park that includes the tallest active sand dune system on the east coast. Due to the winds, Jockey’s Ridge is ever changing. While there you can learn about the three ecosystems and the animals that live at the Ridge. The park includes a visitor’s center and museum. During the season the park is open from 8am - 9pm. Its the perfect place to watch the sunset over the sound. Be sure to bring a boogie board along. Kids love sliding down the slopes of the Ridge on them.

Kite Flying
Lighthouses
go fly a kite!
No, literally! The winds on the Outer Banks make kite flying a great family activity. Just ask that famous family, the Wright Brothers. There are many wide open places to be able to fly a kite. The beach. Jockey’s Ridge. Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Just be careful of other people in the general vicinity should your kite get away from you.
fishing piers
Next you can go take a long walk off a short pier. No! Wait! Not literally this time! But why not visit a pier and try your hand at fishing. The water may be closed to you, but it is certainly not closed to the fish. Even if you don’t want, or like to fish, you can still soak up the sun while enjoying the day. There are plenty of piers up and down the coast that you can visit. Beginning with Kitty Hawk Pier to the north, going all the way down to the Avon Fishing Pier to the south. Jennette’s Pier even has a display of fish from the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. And while we are on the subject of fishing, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center or Pirate's Cove Marina to watch the fishermen bring in the day's catch.
lighthouses
Lighthouses dot our coast up and down the Outer Banks. Currituck Beach, Bodie, Hatteras and Ocracoke. Currituck Beach Light Station (often referred to as the Corolla Light) is the red-bricked lighthouse located in historic Corolla Village. You can take the family on the 220 step climb to view the ocean, the sound and the Currituck Outer Banks. It is open during the season daily from 9am - 5pm, with Wednesdays and Thursdays open until 8pm. Bodie (pronounced body) Island Light Station is located on the northern end of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, just south of Nags Head. Fewer steps await you at Bodie than at the Corolla Light. It’s a 200 step climb to the top. The first climb begins at 9:10am with the last climb beginning at 4:30pm. Eight people are permitted on each climb, and remember to wear closed toe shoes. Perhaps the most recognizable lighthouse is the “candy cane-striped” Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, located in the town of Buxton on Hatteras Island. It has the most steps at 257, from ground to balcony level. Well, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country after all. During the season, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse climbing hours are 9am - 4:30pm daily. 2019 | DUCKCOROLLAOBX.COM

The all-white Ocracoke Lighthouse is located in Ocracoke Village at the southern end of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It is the second oldest operating lighthouse in the United States. While not open for climbing, the actual lighthouse site is open to visitors. For more information on Outer Banks Lighthouses, be sure to read our Worth the Drive section in this guide.
roanoke island
Lighthouses not your thing? No worries! There is a cool piece of history waiting for you on Roanoke Island. On the west side of Highway 64 in Manteo, down the street from the Ace Hardware, you’ll find the Pea Island Cookhouse Museum. The Freedmen Surfmen Heroes story can be found at this tribute to the Outer Banks’ only all African-American Lifesaving Station. The museum is run by three first cousins, all descendants of the brave Freedman Surfmen that patrolled our coast for 67 years. While at the museum learn about the heroic rescue of the crew from the E.S. Newman in 1896. It took place during a hurricane in October of that year, in conditions even too rough for their rowboat. Without giving away the whole story, the surfmen had to swim out to the sinking boat. There are limited days and hours the museum is open. Visit their website at peaislandpreservationsociety.com for all the details. (See a complete story on the Pea Island Cookhouse Museum in our sister publication, My Outer Banks Home, summer 2019 issue).

farmers markets
You probably saw them on your way onto the Outer Banks, so why not make a trip back out to visit them? Currituck’s mainland has some wonderful farmers markets. Take a short trip across the bridge and pick up some boiled peanuts, a ripe watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, or some juicy peaches. And that is only a tiny bit of what is available. You will also find wine from North Carolina vineyards, pickles, relishes, jams, and even fresh baked pies. You won’t be disappointed by the choices you’ll be offered. Although it may be difficult not buying everything in sight! Be sure to also check out the Farmer Markets located in Nags Head, Wanchese and Manteo. Visit outerbanksguides.com/ outer-banks-information/roadside-markets/ for a listing of markets. 8

Lend A Hand
lend a hand
Do something bigger than yourself. You can’t go in the water anyway, why not take the day and do some volunteer work on the Outer Banks. Take the family over to Manteo on Roanoke Island and take a dog out for a walk from the SPCA shelter. Or play with some of the cats in their playroom. You could also head to the Beach Food Pantry in Kitty Hawk and help stock some of the shelves. The local non-profits would love the additional hands.

The Casey Logan Disc Golf Course just celebrated their grand opening in March, 2019. The Disc Golf course is located behind First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills. You’ll find 18 holes in a beautiful wooded setting. Best yet, it's free!
game night
Thus far, we’ve talked about taking the family out of the house on those red flag days. Maybe the flags are flying and it isn’t warm and sunny. Maybe the weather is rainy and gloomy. You can still promote some family bonding during these times. You’re probably renting a beach house. Use it to gather around the dining table to build a jigsaw puzzle as a family. Additionally, most houses provide some board games too. Pull those out and play a family game of Monopoly. You can even read some books about the area and novels set on the Outer Banks. There are some great ones out there. I could even recommend a few…. Well, there you have it! A Red Flag day at the beach doesn’t necessarily mean a ruined vacation day. There are plenty of things you can do. Yes, even though we are widely known for our great beaches, there are so many other things that the Outer Banks has to offer. Make use of all of them! Oh, and one last thing, beach-combing is always a great family activity, especially at the end of a Red Flag day. Go out to see what might have washed up on the beach! Greg Smrdel is the editor for the Duck Corolla Guide. Now excuse him while he collects Fitbit steps as he climbs a lighthouse.
Duck’s walkable village has everything you could want or need, from a sound side boardwalk to stores, galleries, and eateries. Enjoy free live events at the Town Park and stroll along the newly completed pedestrian paths. Find it all in Duck.

ith it’s wide open green spaces and scenic views, Historic Corolla Park is the centerpiece of Corolla, on the Currituck Outer Banks in Northeastern North Carolina. It’s a great place to take in a seasonal event or simply take a relaxing walk, and is home to three unique landmarks — Whalehead, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Whalehead... In the heart of the park Whalehead in Historic Corolla is a 1920s era Art Nouveau architectural masterpiece, museum and the centerpiece of what has come to be called Historic Corolla Park. Whalehead’s intriguing past is steeped in the storied roaring ‘20s lifestyle of its patriarch and matriarch, Edward Collins Knight Jr. and his wife. Tours and exhibits are offered daily.

WORTH THE DRIVE
Wright Brothers National Memorial
More than 115 years ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright proved to the world that man could fly. And they did it right here on the Outer Banks with the first successful, “heavier than air” airplane flights on Dec. 17, 1903. Enormous sand dunes, steady winds and wide-open spaces drew the Ohio brothers to our shores. To commemorate their achievement, this massive monument in Kill Devil Hills marks the exact location where the brothers made history. Corolla Wild Horses
The Corolla wild horses were some of the first settlers on the Outer Banks! Originally left behind by explorers nearly 500 years ago, these horses are of Spanish decent and were recently recognized as the state horse of North Carolina. Known for their hardiness, the horses have weathered centuries of storms and feed on the salty marsh grasses native to this area. The current herd size fluctuates between 120 and 150. The horses roam freely north of Corolla, in an area that is accessible only by 4 wheel-drive vehicles. Just remember that the horses are wild and very unpredictable. It is illegal to feed or come within 50 feet of them, so be sure to bring a zoom lens! Please note: A permit will be required between Memorial Day and Labor Day to park on the 14 miles of beach from Corolla village north to the Virginia state line. Permits can be purchased at the county’s tourism department with offices in Corolla and Moyock. For more information: corollawildhorses.com 30

Remember to
BE SAFE
Y
ou’re on vacation. Time to have fun, go on adventures, and to relax. Luckily you came to the right place to do all of that. While we have beautiful beaches on the Outer Banks, most visitors have limited experience in our environment. Exercising common sense, and some caution, will go a long way toward enjoying your vacation. Remember to spend your time away on our beaches and not in the emergency room. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind during your Outer Banks stay.
at the Beach! By GREG SMRDEL
Swim Near A Lifeguard
According to the United States Lifesaving Association, rip currents account for at least 100 deaths each year in the United States, and more than 80 percent of all ocean rescues are related to them. The most important precaution you can take when it comes to rip currents is to swim near a lifeguard. The chances of drowning at a beach with a USLA affiliated lifeguard are 1 in 18 million. Check with lifeguards about potential hazards and look for warning flags that signify dangerous water conditions. Lifeguards can advise you on the safest places to swim and also provide you with essential information about water conditions. Advisory boards are also located at lifeguard stands. Go to obxbeachaccess.com to find beach accesses where lifeguards are stationed.
Rip Currents
Rip currents can materialize quickly on the Outer Banks. These powerful channels of water extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents are more likely to pull around low tide and in areas where there is a break in the wave pattern. Signs of a rip current include churning, choppy water, an area that has a notable difference in the color of the water, or a line of foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily seaward. If you find yourself being pulled seaward, stay calm and don’t fight the current. If you are able to, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. When you are free of the current, swim at an angle, away from the current and toward shore. If you are unable to escape by swimming; float or tread water and call or wave for help. To learn more, visit ripcurrents.noaa.gov.
Dangerous shore break
Waves crashing on the beach, particularly around high tide, can be powerful and dangerous – easily knocking someone off their feet – especially young children. These waves can cause serious neck, shoulder and spinal injuries. General rules to follow are to never turn your back to the waves, never dive to the bottom of oncoming waves, and if you do get knocked down to put your arms in front of you to protect your head and neck. Closely supervise children at all times when near the water. It is not recommended that you attempt to ride waves that are breaking onshore, or play in the impact zone.
Offshore Wind
Offshore winds (blowing from the southwest) can quickly blow you and your raft or Stand Up Paddleboard out toward sea further than desired or expected. Please check wind conditions before going on the water with equipment and if you are unsure, check with your lifeguard. 36
DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS | 2019
Heat Exhaustion
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States. Heat exhaustion – dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, profuse sweating, nausea and/or rapid heartbeat – is a serious condition that should not be ignored. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler location such as a shaded area, apply cool wet clothes to your skin and sip water. Cooling off your feet by placing them in a bucket of cool water is also helpful. If symptoms do not improve, a person should be examined by a health professional to make sure that heat stroke, which can be deadly, is not developing. To prevent heat-related illnesses, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and seek shade during hot weather. Remember, heat exhaustion is not just a human danger, pets are also affected. Exercise caution when bringing your pet on your beach vacation.
BEACH SAFETY
Severe Weather
According to the National Weather Service, North Carolina is ranked second in the country for lightning-related deaths. Weather can change quickly on the Outer Banks, so it’s important to stay alert and check the weather forecast before heading out for the day. Listen to ocean rescue lifeguards when they warn of an incoming storm and suggest you leave the beach. They watch the radar closely. During thunderstorms, seek cover inside or if not available, in an enclosed vehicle. It is recommended that you wait 30 minutes following the last thunder crack to return to the beach.
Shark safety
To avoid contact with sharks, don’t enter or swim near a pier, since baitfish that sharks feed on are often attracted to these structures. Swim and wade in groups and avoid being in the water during dusk, at night, or during twilight hours when sharks are most active. Also refrain from wearing shiny jewelry, which can be mistaken by a shark as fish scales. Sand bars and steep drop offs are also places where sharks are more likely to dwell.
Sunscreen
A vacation can be ruined by getting a severe sunburn, not to mention it can cause longterm skin damage and cancer. Sun exposure is more intense while on the beach and in the water, which means beachgoers need to be vigilant when it comes to sunscreen. The Environmental Working Group recommends using the mineral-based ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium oxide over chemical-based ingredients. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends an SPF of at least 30 and recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours or sooner if you are in the water. Water resistant sunscreen only lasts between 40 to 80 minutes.
Digging Holes on the Beach
Digging holes on the beach poses a number of dangers. People and animals can fall into the holes, especially at nighttime. Digging tunnels creates the potential for sand to collapse on you, posing a life-threatening situation. Holes can also present a danger to lifeguards and first responders in four-wheelers and trucks. A few rules of thumb before you dig in with that shovel are to never dig a hole deeper than the knees of the smallest person in the group; no tunneling whatsoever; and always fill in holes when you leave the beach.
Corolla Wild Horses
Lastly, it is illegal to come within 50 feet of the Corolla wild horses. They are unpredictable and dangerous, and best viewed from afar. It is also illegal to feed the horses. Unnatural food items can harm or even kill the horses, and it makes them more likely to seek out humans for food. A good rule of thumb for all wildlife is to be respectful and keep your distance – our Outer Banks ecology is fragile! Staying safe is important to ensuring that your vacation is a happy one. If you are in doubt about something, do a little research and don’t forget to ask a lifeguard. They are your greatest resource once your feet hit the sand. Most Outer Banks towns also have websites outlining local rules and regulations, and don’t forget to check out www.obxbeachaccess.com for more valuable information. Always err on the side of caution so you can be sure that you and your family have a wonderful stay. Enjoy!

Beachin’ it with Fido
F
ortunately, the Outer Banks is a very dog-friendly place and there’s no doubt your dog’s tail will keep wagging all week long. There’s lots of four-legged fun to be had on the beaches, at the dog parks and all over town. But to ensure you and Fido have the vacation of a lifetime, we wanted to provide some tips, regulations and other useful information you’ll need to know to be sure that your canine buddy will be as happy as a clam! Every town, and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, have their own rules when it comes to keeping your dog on a leash as well as designated times you can bring your four-legged friend on the beach. All towns require that you remove dog waste and dispose of it in an appropriate container. From north to south, here’s a run-down on the leash laws by area or town along with contact information: • In Corolla, dogs are allowed year-round on the beach and at the Whalehead Club’s Heritage Park, but they must be on a leash. There is no leash length requirement. 252-453-8555. • In Duck, there are no leash laws on town beaches, however dogs must be supervised and under control at all times. Dogs must be leashed throughout town including the park, boardwalk and Duck Trail. 252-255-1234. • In Southern Shores, dogs must be on a leash year-round on the beach and during the season. From May 15 to September 15, they can only be on the beach (leashed) before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. 252-261-2394. • In Kitty Hawk, dogs are allowed on the beach and must display a current rabies tag. From the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet. All other times during the year, dogs must be restrained on a leash retractable to 12 feet. Dogs can be taken off the leash only if they are well-behaved, don’t disturb other people, and remain within 30 feet of owners at all times. The owner must have a leash, however, at all times. 252-261-3552. • In Kill Devil Hills, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, dogs are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. unless being used to aid a handicapped person. Dogs must be leashed at all other times. 252-480-4047.

For a lot of us our dogs are as much a part of our family as our kids or our Aunt Mildred. So, of course when we take our family vacation, we want to bring them along too! And why not? They also need a break from their daily drudgery of napping on the couch and scratching themselves.
• In Nags Head, pets are welcome at any time as long as they are restrained with a leash no longer than 10 feet. 252-441-5508. • On the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, dogs are permitted on the beaches as long as they are restrained on a leash that is six feet or less. 252-473-2111. You can also find more detailed information about regulations in each town by visiting their websites or obxbeachaccess.com.

Pet Safety Tips
You’ll find that many of the same safety tips that apply to us humans while vacationing on the beach also apply to our furry friends. To ensure everyone enjoys these beautiful dog days of summer, here are just a few tips to keep Fido happy – and safe – while you are on the Outer Banks. • Hydration, hydration, hydration! It can get hot here during the summer months, so whether you are spending the day on the beach or at the park, make sure you have plenty of water for your pet, along with plenty of shade. Overheating is a real threat to your pet during these hot months. Note: Signs to look for are excessive panting and drooling, wobbly (drunk-looking, disoriented) movement, vomiting, and a rapid heart rate. Overweight dogs, the very young and very old, and breeds with long hair or flat-faces (like pugs and bulldogs) are at a higher risk of heat stroke. • Try to keep your dog from taking in too much salt water, as it can lead to diarrhea and vomiting. While it typically runs its course in a day, it can be a bummer for you and your dog. • Dogs can drown, too. Make sure whatever precautions you take for yourself and your
family when it comes to water safety, you do the same for Fido. Dogs can get caught in rip currents or hurt from high surf and jelly-fish stings, just like we can. • Ouch, that sand is hot, especially for your furry friend. A good rule of thumb is that if it is too hot for you to walk without shoes on, it’s definitely too hot for your dog. Consider keeping your dog off the beach during the hottest hours of the day. They and their paws will thank you. Sand can reach temperatures of 120 degrees during mid-day, and just like your feet, their paw pads can burn and blister. Note: Sandspurs can cause your dog some grief, so watch for areas where they are troublesome – and pay attention if your dog seems to be limping after some exploring back in the dunes. • Be sure to be administer your’ pet’s flea and tick medication well before you head to the beach as both pests are on our beaches and can make your dog pretty miserable. Please note: Safe Pet Vacation kits provided by the Dare County SPCA are available at town halls and include information on what to do if you are separated from your pet. Also provided is a temporary dog tag and other important information and contact numbers.
Pick Up the Poop! Please!
Our island is simply beautiful, and we all want to keep it that way. Dog poop is a huge pollutant that can get washed into our oceans and sounds and have negative impacts on our fragile ecosystem. Besides, dog feces are not only really unpleasant to step in, swim near, or lay your beach towel next to, it can be extremely harmful to both people and wildlife. So, don’t forget to clean up after your dog and dispose of it in the trash can! As you can see, the Outer Banks is the perfect place to visit with your four-legged pal as long as everyone follows a few simple guidelines! Miles of beaches, trails, walking paths, and parks make it fun and easy to get out and explore with Fido. You’re even likely to find a cafe or two that will welcome your pooch on their outdoor patio, and many of our shops even have souvenirs for your buddy as well. More and more of our rental homes and hotels are becoming pet friendly, making it easier than ever to bring your canine friend along with you on vacation. There’s no reason to leave your dog at home anymore, and as long as you play it safe and are respectful of our unique local environment, you’re both sure to have a tail waggin’ good time! 2019 | DUCKCOROLLAOBX.COM

Finding the...
perfect vacation home By TARA TURNER
Stunning sunrises. Crashing waves. Salty air. You are ready to spend a week celebrating and enjoying the summer from the deck of your Outer Banks beach house. But first, you need to find a place that is just right for you and your family.
B
efore starting your search, make a list of conveniences that you can't live without. This will make your search easier, regardless if you are going to take care of booking a house yourself, or if you choose to use one of the fabulous rental companies here on our barrier islands. The choices in rental beach houses are essentially unlimited. The size in houses drastically range from a single bedroom to 10+ bedrooms. And the amenities are endless too. Hot tub? Private pool? Sunning Deck? Ping Pong table? No problem! You can reasonably pick, choose, and likely find your ‘dream house’ to spend your summer vacation. Who knows, maybe you will even find the perfect house to return to for many years to come! There are many towns that make up the Outer Banks, but don’t let that overwhelm you about where to stay. Every destination has their own stunning selection of beach homes. Each with different qualities and attractions that they offer. Nags Head, is the home of 54
DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS | 2019
Jockey’s Ridge - the largest sand dune on the east coast. Kill Devil Hills, is where you can explore the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Then there is Buxton, where you can climb America’s tallest brick lighthouse. The wild Mustangs that you might get lucky enough to see, live along the shores of Corolla. Let’s not forget about all of the historical events and reenactments that take place every year in Manteo. Wherever the physical location of your beach house, of this you can be sure, you will feel right at home during your stay. When selecting your just perfect beach house for the summer, you will want to consider all amenities that your family will both want and need. The conveniences and luxuries in your rental can make all the difference in the world. Whether you are flying solo, or are with a sizable group, finding a vacation house that is accommodating and hospitable to everyone doesn’t have to be taxing. Some of the basic essential amenities might include:
Internet and Wi-Fi
If being off the grid sounds pretty good to you, feel free to skip right over this part... For many vacationers, a technology free getaway sounds appealing, but isn’t very reasonable these days. We all have become accustomed to being able to readily access our email for work purposes, to stay in touch with family and friends, and to update social media accounts. Not being able to easily do so can make an otherwise enjoyable vacation seem a bit stressful. Check to ensure that your vacation home has internet and Wi-Fi service.
Pet Friendly
Most vacationers consider their pet to be part of their family and enjoy bringing them on their summer vacation. The Outer Banks has always been known as one of the most pet friendly beach destinations. Elaine Breiholz, the Property Manager at Carolina Designs Realty, says that “Dog friendly homes are the number one searched amenity on our website.” There are numerous pet friendly hotels and home rentals in each town. If you plan on bringing your pet on vacation, be aware that pet laws vary from place-to-place. Something to keep in mind when deciding where you will be renting your beach house. See “Beaching it With Fido” in this issue for local pet leash laws and various dog parks. Bringing your pet with you on vacation doesn’t have to be daunting. Just be sure your beach house and the town it is located in is pet friendly, and your four legged friend will fit right in!
Early Check-In, Late Check-Out
Being able to check-in early to your long anticipated beach house can quite possibly be one of the best feelings ever; almost as good as being able to check-out late. Early check-in allows you to start the unpacking process just a little earlier than expected, and perhaps beat some of the traffic onto the beach. And a late check-out gives you those last few beach moments that you are desperately clinging to. Some rental properties allow you to modify check-in and checkout, with a small fee.

Washer and Dryer
For vacationers staying longer than just a couple of days, and especially for those families that are traveling with children, a washer and dryer can make your vacation a lot less stressful. Having easy access to laundry facilities can also help keep your packing to a minimum as you will be able to wash and re-wear clothes. This amenity can be more important than you think.
Pool and/or Hot Tub
Quite a few rental houses on the Outer Banks include a swimming pool and/or hot tub. It may be something to consider for your next vacation home. When traveling with a large family, sometimes preferences can be split on where to spend the day. So having the beach AND a pool gives you double the options. Vacationing AT the beach doesn’t necessarily mean that every second has to be spent ON the beach. So making sure that you select a vacation rental with plenty of options for activities just might be a selling point for you. Besides, who couldn’t imagine spending a gorgeous sunny day by the pool, or unwinding after a long day in a relaxing hot tub?
Beach Access versus Sound Access
Elaine from Carolina Designs Realty also had this to say, “Possibly one of the biggest concerns that Outer Banks vacationer’s have, is beach access and the proximity to the Atlantic or even the Sound.” If you enjoy a late night stroll on the beach, or if you’re an early bird who loves to watch the stunning Outer Banks sunrises, a home that is on or near the beach might be right up your alley. There are rentals all along the coast that allow you to walk straight out your back door and sink your toes directly into the sand. There are also dozens of public beach accesses up and down Highway 12. Some offer showers to rinse away the salt and sand, restrooms, and even handicapped facilities. Now, if you
aren’t that much of an early riser yet still want the same fun that the beach has to offer without the crashing waves, a home between the highways or on the west side of the Bypass might be more suitable for you. Keep this in mind too, rentals situated on the Sound typically offer calm and relaxed waters, even with shallow spots - both ideal for children and pets at play. And let's also not forget the sunsets on the sound are spectacular!
Here is a partial check list of amenities provided by Carolina Designs Realty, to keep an eye out for when searching for your next rental beach house:
Alexis Fraser
• Pet friendly (rentals and towns) • Heated pools • Central locations with walking distances • Plenty of space - indoor and outdoor • Entertainment options

Local Beach Reads Kick Back and Relax Beach vacations are about disconnecting and unwinding, kicking back and relaxing. Luckily, most of these titles are only available in print format - so you’ll have to leave your electronics behind and reconnect with words on paper. Grab a book, a towel, a patch of sand, and settle in for some blissful local beach reading. By MEAGHAN BEASLEY
Mystery novels and the beach tend to go hand-in-hand. Maybe it has something to do with escaping from the everyday and getting a little thrill from a well written whodunnit. At the top of your list put the fifth entry in the Lighthouse Library Mystery series, Something Read Something Dead by Eva Gates ($26.99 hardcover). Set at the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Lucy Richardson is it’s resident librarian, curating her small collection of books by day and solving mysteries in her spare time. In the latest entry, Lucy hosts a wedding shower for her cousin which turns deadly when a guest collapses. Can Lucy solve the mystery - and save the wedding? Treat yourself and find out! After mysteries, classic beach romances are a great way to pass the time on the sand. If you love Mary Kay Andrews and Mary Alice Monroe, pick up the new title My ExBest Friend’s Wedding by Wendy Wax ($16.99 paperback). When a successful romance writer, Lauren, returns home to Manteo for her wedding, she must face the best friend she left behind twenty years ago. Not only did Lauren and Bree once share a dream of becoming famous romance novelists, but Bree ended up married to Lauren’s high school sweetheart. More than broken friendships await; Lauren’s mother has kept a deep secret about her dead husband that will come out, no matter what. Set in Nags Head and featuring everything you love about our area, including the Nags Head aristocracy, Roanoke Island’s close-knit community, and an independent bookstore in Manteo, My Ex-Best Friend’s Wedding is your number one beach romance pick this summer. For those seeking an introspective novel with ties to Outer Banks history, be sure to pick up Blackbeard’s Outer Banks Treasure by local author and comedian Greg Smrdel ($12.99 paperback). Akin to Smrdel’s previous books (Home, Sweet Outer Banks, Home? 58
DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS | 2019
and Hurricane Izzy), Blackbeard’s Outer Banks Treasure takes the protagonist, Edward Drummond, on a search for answers to his family’s past. Taking place in both Nags Head and Bath, North Carolina, Edward’s journey along the coast leads him to discover familial ties to the notorious pirate Edward Teach – better known as Blackbeard. While the Wright Brothers continue to fascinate locals and visitors alike, Larry Tise presents a new look at the locals who populated the Outer Banks at the time of the legendary First Flight in Circa 1903: North Carolina’s Outer Banks at the Dawn of Flight ($20.00 paperback). An historic exploration of the Outer Banks at the dawn of the 20th century, never-beforeseen photos share insight into the lives and culture of the people who made this isolated area home. While commercial fishing and Life-Saving services brought diverse populations to our shores, small communities developed with all the growing pains and cultural divides experienced in large cities. Eye-opening and one of its kind. What better way to commemorate our shores than with North Carolina Lighthouses: The Stories Behind the Beacons from Cape Fear to Currituck Beach, Revised and Expanded Edition by Cheryl Shelton-Roberts and Bruce Roberts ($22.00 paperback). Beautiful photos and illustrations highlight this impressive text about our local lighthouses. From structural drawings and the history of the Fresnel lens, to the multiple re-buildings and facelifts of our shoreline beacons, North Carolina Lighthouses will delight historians and architecture buffs alike.
Sarah Downing, former assistant curator of the Outer Banks History Center on Roanoke Island, returns with her sixth book, Chronicles of the Outer Banks: Fish Tales and Salty Gales ($21.99 paperback). An eclectic and fun collection of quirky little-known Outer Banks Tales, this book is a great addition to the library of those who enjoy offbeat trivia and tales. Local writers R. Wayne Gray and Nancy Beach Gray also return with their newest book, Images of America: Commercial Fishing on the Outer Banks ($21.99 paperback). An historical retrospective of the role of fishing in the development of the Outer Banks, the Grays also cover contemporary issues faced by modern commercial fishermen trying to maintain their traditional livelihoods amidst increasing regulations and tourism.
YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD BOOKSTORE
It’s time to add to your collection of Suzanne Tate’s famed Nature Series for children with Tommy Tuna: A Tale of a Big Fish – the 40th entry in this much-lauded science series ($5.99 paperback). Suzanne Tate, better known in some circles as The Crabby Lady and an Outer Banks Living Legend, has teamed up once again with her talented illustrator, James Melvin, to cover a fish beloved by many, tuna! While teaching children about these muchdesired fish and the ecosystem in which they live, Tommy Tuna will make a fun read for young readers seeking to learn about the Outer Banks nature around them. Cream paper: multiply page Count by 0.0025 (Finnegan books are on Cream paper)
Tenth generation Cape Hatteras native Jeanette Gray Finnegan, Jr., has spent a lifetime collecting stories about her island home. In the fifth and final book of her children’s series, Island at War: Spirits of Cape Hatteras Island with The Lighthouse Kids ($14.95 paperback), Finnegan covers 400 years of battles fought for control of Cape Hatteras. Envied for the military advantage offered by the inland passages protected by the island, would-be invaders have long attacked it’s shores. From the Indian Wars of the 1500s to the U-boats of World War II, Island at War tells the stories of the locals, fishermen, and surfmen who fought and defended Cape Hatteras’ beaches through the eyes of the children who witnessed it. Living in the shadow of the mighty Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, miles from the village, Ellie, Luke, and Blake exist in a world of spirits, mystical wolves, and stories told by their grandfather, the keeper of the lighthouse. In this five-volume series, the three children of the Jennette family travel back in time to discover the origin of their ancestors and the events that shaped the civilization of Cape Hatteras Island. Throughout the series, islanders live as they did when only an occasional mail boat kept them connected to the rest of the world—before a bridge linked the island to the mainland, before tourists flocked to the area during the summer season, and before the government became involved in managing the land. Isolated from others, they created a life of comfort and community, one that is long lost. In each subsequent volume, the Lighthouse Kids meet the people and experience the events that gradually transformed Cape Hatteras Island to the popular resort area it is today.
In Island at War, we learn about the struggles of the island during wartime. It’s physical proximity to inlets and waterways made it necessary for the enemy to conquer, as an access to the mainland. During the Revolutionary and Civil wars, Hatteras provided necessary products being denied to both the patriots and then the South. The Germans discovered the damage Uboats could exact on shipping, leading to an all-out assault during WWII. Keeping this a secret from the mainland for fear of panic, the island fought a silent battle to survive. Ellie, Luke and Blake are all in for this one, with their enhanced mental abilities, personal spirit guides, wolves, dolphin, horses and a raven to assist.

Trying to find an engaging summer read for your middle graders? Look no further than Caterpillar Summer ($16.00 hardcover). This fun and heartwarming debut novel by North Carolina author Gilliam McDunn takes place along the barrier islands of our Crystal Coast, the Southern Outer Banks. When siblings Cat and Chicken are forced to give up a summer trip to spend three weeks with grandparents they never knew at the beach, Cat learns to let go of past wrongs and appreciate the family she’s been given. Says beloved children’s author Kate Messner, “I could almost smell the ocean air as I read Gillian McDunn's Caterpillar Summer. What a beautiful story of family, forgiveness, life on an island, and growing up.” Meaghan L. Beasley has been a Bookseller, Buyer, and Marketing Manager at Island Bookstore for over 15 years.

Relax at a Spa by the Sea
Y
ou’re on vacation. You want to relax. It is, after all, the best time to unwind, rejuvenate and renew your mind, body and spirit. Sometimes you can do that just by being in close proximity to the blue waters of the Atlantic, deeply breathing in the salt air being blown in by soft ocean breezes. But sometimes it takes more than just that to relax after a year of constant non-stop responsibilities. Fortunately, when you need more, the Outer Banks has a number of places you can go to re-center yourself.
The Outer Banks has some fabulous spas that use the same resources in their practices that we love about our ocean environment – not to mention offering breathtaking views of the water. Whether you want a massage, body treatments or facial, you are sure to be surrounded by tranquility, beauty and renewed peace as you spend a day at a spa-by-the-sea. 70
