Memory Making Ghost Crabs
worth Picture Taking
A look back at vacation memories on the Outer Banks can be like one of those Christmas mornings when you look up and see your children playing with the simplest of toys or building a fort from the empty boxes. Likewise, during your beach vacation, it may be the activities that are not over-planned, over-budgeted, or over-done that stand out the most. We’ve compiled the following list of iconic memory makers that are a must-try while you are here on the Outer Banks.
1. Critter Search
Do the kids need to run off a little energy after dinner, and do you want them to stay tucked in their beds until the full light of day comes? Here’s the trick:
Critters at Nighttime: Introduce them to the sheer delight of a flashlight-fueled frenzy of ghost crabs at night. During the daytime, those little, tunneling architects seem to only appear in the corner of your eye. But the night belongs to ghost crabs. At night they come out of their holes to forage for food and have claws-up duels for territory and mating rights. Pay special attention to the big crabs near the dune line. Aside from supplying everyone with a bright light, no special equipment is needed. Be 6
DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS
prepared if your littlest ones insist on being carried in the beginning because watching ghost crabs at night can be the Halloween-of-the-sea for some folks. In fact, if you are renting an oceanfront cottage and keep your windows open, the laughter and screaming you hear coming from the beach at night is likely to be a ghost crab search happening in your front yard.
Critters during Daytime: Do you want the daytime version of a critter search? Watch every retreating wave for bubbles, tiny holes, and fleeting motion. There in the wettest sand, you will see sand fleas or tiny coquina clams dipping in and out of the sand and leaving bubbles or tracks

behind. For sand fleas, scoop generously into wave-swept sand and wait for their harmless wiggles in between your fingers. For coquinas, soften a meditative gaze on the retreating wave action and you will be rewarded with a synchronized ballet as dozens of bivalves point downward and feed on algae.
2. Critter Capture
Sure, it’s great to sink a fork into backfin lump crab cake or to dig deep in a bowl of Hatteras style clam chowder, but there’s something to be said for connecting where those ethereal delicacies come from. A day spent clamming or crabbing on the Outer Banks is one that will be etched in your memory as a day well spent. Catching blue crabs starts with a simple chicken neck on a string. Head to the sound with a bucket and a net and you’re good to go. Not much else is needed for crabbing except a lot of patience. Hold the string lightly, and you will feel gentle tugs when a crab has surfaced out of the silty part of the sound. The trick is to pull the neck up so slowly and imperceptibly that he does not realize that a net is about to scoop him away. Ideal locations to go crabbing are any bulk headed sound fronts, low piers, gazebos, and bridges that have platforms for fishing. Stay away from the busy commotion of boats and swimmers. Clamming (in small quantities) also does not require a fishing license or complicated equipment. As you walk in the shallow parts of the sound where the edges of sea grass beds are, shuffle your feet just a few inches below the sand’s surface. It may feel like a rock, but you are feeling the “knuckles” of the clam. Scoop them up with your hands, or rake the whole area, and collect them in your buckets. Similar to saying a mealtime grace or having a firsthand experience with farm chores, clamming and crabbing will give everyone an appreciation for how food gets on our tables.

Clamming
and tapas nights are perfect for passing around samples of a new dish without a huge time or financial commitment. No one’s suggesting you deny your affection for eating Alaskan King Crab legs while you are at the beach, but if you are eating them here, those legs have traveled a long way to get to your dinner plate. So, eat like a local while you are here.
4. Take a Hike
Whether it’s maritime forests, soundfront boardwalks, or beachcombing, the OBX is known for being a walker’s paradise. When to go for a walk and where are the toughest decisions you will make. Shell seekers should concentrate on the “trash line” or the high tide water marks that are left on the beaches twice a day. For those who want to avoid the noon-day sun, the Nags Head Woods Preserve offers cooler shaded walking trails through four ecosystems. Known as the treat that is “hidden within plain sight,” parts of the Nags Head Woods are just yards away from the US 158 Bypass. For sunset walks along Duck’s mile long waterfront and a mix of shade and sun, go to Town Park and pick up the wooden pier from several commercial areas. The 11-acre park winds through maritime forest, willow swamps, open green spaces, and offers plenty of soundside sunsets.

Kite Flying on Jockey's Ridge Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
KITTY HAWK KITES
5. Go Fly a Kite
We may have a few more people and power lines than when Orville and Wilbur were conducting their glider tests here, but the beaches, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, and the soundside have great locations to reacquaint you with a childhood favorite: kite flying. When it comes to equipment decisions, consider the wind conditions and ages of the flyers. And remember, there's a reason that Charlie Brown was always crying about his kite being stuck in a tree. That diamond shaped kite is best left to the cartoon characters. Instead, pick a user-friendly delta shape for a large variety of wind conditions or an all-cloth parafoil kite without any spars to break or injure bystanders. If you want to up your game, try stunt kites which will need a stronger wind and more desolate flying area, but will provide a lot of fun after the kite is launched.

6. Make the Climb
Do you want to see the Outer Banks the same way that Orville and Wilbur saw it? There are several ways to change your point of view without having to get on an airplane. Come see why Hollywood has loved the largest dunes on the East Coast for everything from sci-fi movies to music videos. Depending on the shifting sands, Jockey’s Ridge State Park will give you a vantage point that varies from 80 to 100 feet in the air. Plus, it’s an ideal location for sunsets and dramatic family photos. Tour one of the lighthouses on the Outer Banks. The highest vantage point in Buxton is at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It is the tallest lighthouse in the United States, standing 193 feet (above ground level). The Wright Brother’s National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills sits on a hill that is 90 feet in the air, but there’s another one that is off the beaten path that also pays homage to our First in Flight heritage. Located at the Aycock Brown Welcome Center, the Monument to a Century in Flight is in Kitty Hawk and is easily passed on your way to or from the Outer Banks. The hill offers great views to both the north and south. Fourteen wing-foil shaped pylons symbolize our humble aviation beginnings and orbital journey to the moon.
Nags Head Woods
7. Accomplish Your (Sand) Bucket List 8. Got 4WD?
Tell all those car commercials with mountains and boulders to move over, because both you and your SUV deserve some beach driving fun. Learn how and when to inflate tires for driving on the sand, go see the wild horses in Corolla, or explore a quieter beach at numerous beach ramps. To find out more about driving techniques, tire pressures, which towns require permits, or where beach access ramps are located, go to the OBX Beach Access website at: obxbeachaccess.com. While it may be tempting to make a plume of water spray like you’ve seen in the car commercials, remember, salt water is highly corrosive to your car’s sheet metal and undercarriage. 8

9. Screen Savers and Christmas Cards
How often are all of these family members and friends together? Be sure to snap plenty of photos for this year’s Christmas cards because there’s nothing like capturing the whole clan against the sand dunes or with the Atlantic Ocean as a back drop. Those sunrise shots that you take on the beach today will be perfect for your screensaver on a gloomy day in February.
10. Swap Places - Trade Places
11. For the Inner Traveler
Yes, this was supposed to be a Top 10 list, but here’s the bonus round. If a vacation is supposed to recharge your batteries, consider the batteries that really count: your spirit. There are many houses of worship here that have late morning or ‘come-as-you-are’ services to accommodate a vacationer’s schedule. Here are a few more spiritual offerings that are unique to the Outer Banks and are good for both body and soul:

DUCK ROAD
Judy, a guest from Virginia, says her family saves several evenings each year to go out to their favorite restaurants. Last year their tradition was upset by a toddler’s sleeping schedule. “We found that going out for lunch instead meant we ate the same food, but saved a little money, and didn’t have to wait for tables,” says Judy. Here are a few other ways to switch things up: If you usually spend every day at the beach, sample the steady water temperatures and long walk-out distances at the toddler-friendly sound for a change. If you rented in a desolate area, try the village scene in Manteo, Duck, or a day trip and ferry ride to Ocracoke. On the flip side, if you rented in the heart of a busy area, spend the day at a more desolate stretch of sand such as Coquina Beach or Pea Island.

Beat Safe the Beach! Y
ou are on vacation to relax and enjoy all that the Outer Banks has to offer. That includes the sun, the sand and the surf. But as we know, the very things we love can often hurt us. The Outer Banks is a wonderful playground to explore, but it’s also an environment that many visitors have limited experience in. Caution and common sense can go a long way in ensuring you have the vacation you always dreamed of as opposed to spending it in the emergency room. Here are some safety tips to help you during your stay.
Swim Near A Lifeguard
According to the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), rip currents account for at least 100 deaths each year in the United States, and more than 80 percent of all ocean rescues are related to rip currents. The most important precaution you can take when it comes to rip currents is to swim near a lifeguard. The chances of drowning at a beach with a USLA affiliated lifeguard are 1 in 18 million. Check with lifeguards about potential hazards and look for warning flags that signify dangerous water conditions. Lifeguards can advise you on the safest places to swim and also provide you with essential information about water conditions. Advisory boards are also located at lifeguard stands. Go to obxbeachaccess.com to find beach accesses where lifeguards are stationed.
Rip Currents
Rip currents can materialize quickly on the Outer Banks. These powerful channels of water extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents are more likely to pull around low tide and in areas where there is a break in the wave pattern. Signs of a rip current include churning, choppy water, an area that has a notable difference in the color of the water, or a line of foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily seaward. Rip currents often occur where there is a break in the incoming wave pattern. If you find yourself being pulled seaward, stay calm and don’t fight the current. If you are able to, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. When you are free of the current, swim at an angle, away from the current and toward shore. If you are unable to escape by swimming, float or tread water and call or wave for help. To learn more, visit ripcurrents.noaa.gov.
Dangerous shore break
Waves crashing on the beach, particularly around high tide, can be powerful and dangerous – easily knocking someone off their feet – especially young children. These waves can cause serious neck, shoulder and spinal injures. General rules to follow are to never turn your back to the waves, never dive to the bottom of oncoming waves, and if you do get knocked down to put your arms in front of you to protect your head and neck. Closely supervise children at all times when near the water. It is not recommended that you attempt to ride waves that are breaking onshore, or play in the impact zone. 12
DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS | 2018
Heat Exhaustion
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States. Heat exhaustion – dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, profuse sweating, nausea and/or rapid heartbeat – is a serious condition that should not be ignored. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler location, apply cool wet clothes to your skin and sip water. If symptoms do not improve, a person should be examined by a health professional to make sure that heat stroke, which can be deadly, is not developing. To prevent heat-related illnesses, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and seek shade during hot weather.
SUNBURN
A vacation can be ruined by getting a severe sunburn, not to mention it can cause longterm skin damage and cancer. Sun exposure is more intense while on the beach and in the water, which means beachgoers need to be vigilant when it comes to sunscreen. The Environmental Working Group recommends using the mineral-based ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium oxide over chemical-based ingredients. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends an SPF of at least 30 and recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours and sooner if you are in the water. Water resistant sunscreen only lasts for between 40 to 80 minutes.
OFFSHORE WIND
Offshore winds (blowing from the southwest) can quickly blow you and your raft or Stand Up Paddleboard out toward sea further than desired. Please check wind conditions before going on the water with equipment and if you are unsure, check with your lifeguard.
Severe Weather
According to the National Weather Service, North Carolina is ranked second in the country for lightning-related deaths. Weather can change quickly on the Outer Banks, so it’s important to stay alert and check the weather forecast before heading out for the day. Listen to ocean rescue lifeguards when they warn of an incoming storm and suggest you leave the beach. They watch the radar closely. During thunderstorms, seek cover inside
or if not available, an enclosed vehicle. It is recommended that you wait 30 minutes following the last thunder crack to return to the beach.
BEACH SAFETY
Shark safety
To avoid contact with sharks, don’t enter or swim near a pier, since baitfish that sharks feed on are often attracted to these structures. Swim and wade in groups and avoid being in the water during dusk, at night or during twilight hours when sharks are most active. Also refrain from wearing shiny jewelry, which can be mistaken by a shark as fish scales. Sand bars and steep drop offs are also places where sharks are more likely to dwell.
DIGGING HOLES ON THE BEACH
Digging holes on the beach poses a number of dangers. People and animals can fall into the holes, especially at nighttime. Digging tunnels creates the potential for sand to collapse on you, posing a life-threatening situation. Holes can also present a danger to lifeguards and first responders in four-wheelers and trucks. A few rules of thumb before you dig in with that shovel are to never dig a hole deeper than the knees of the smallest person in the group; no tunneling whatsoever; and always fill in holes when you leave the beach. Staying safe is important to ensuring that your vacation is a happy one. If you are in doubt about something, do a little research and don’t forget to ask a lifeguard. They are your greatest resource once your feet hit the sand. Most Outer Banks towns also have websites outlining local rules and regulations, and don’t forget to check obxbeachaccess.com for more valuable information. Always err on the side of caution so you can be sure that you and your family have a wonderful stay. Enjoy!

WORTH THE DRIVE
Wright Brothers National Memorial More than 100 years ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright proved to the world that man could fly. And they did it right here on the Outer Banks with the first successful airplane flights on Dec. 17, 1903. Enormous sand dunes, steady winds and wide open spaces drew the Ohio brothers to our shores. To commemorate their achievement, this massive monument in Kill Devil Hills marks the exact location where the brothers made history. It’s an experience the whole family will enjoy. Note: Until late summer/early fall of 2018, the Visitor Center will be closed, however, the grounds and outdoor exhibits are open. Information and bookstore services are available in the temporary facility near the parking lot, as well as some smaller exhibits. 1401 National Park Drive, Kill Devil Hills • nps.gov/wrbr
National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center Located on beautiful Roanoke Island, visitors can learn about the 11 national wildlife refuges and one national fish hatchery located on the Outer Banks and eastern North Carolina. Visitors will love stopping by the old Dare Forest Supply Store, learn the history of Buffalo City and more as you watch short films in the center’s theater. Be sure to check out the pocosin diorama and red wolf den while you are there. The center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. 100 Conservation Way, Manteo • fws.gov/ncgatewayvc

Corolla Wild Horses The Corolla wild horses were some of the first settlers on the Outer Banks! Originally left behind by explorers nearly 500 years ago, these horses are of Spanish decent and were recently recognized as the state horse of North Carolina. Known for their hardiness, the horses have weathered centuries of storms and feed on the salty marsh grasses native to this area. Current herd size fluctuates between 80 - 100 individuals. They roam freely north of Corolla, in an area that is accessible only by 4WD. There are several tour companies that offer excursions in search of the horses, or if you have a suitable vehicle you can strike out on your own. Just remember that the horses are wild and very unpredictable. It is illegal to feed or come within 50 feet of them, so be sure to bring a zoom lens! Please note: New this year, a permit will be required between Memorial Day and Labor Day to park on the 14 miles of beach from Corolla village north to the Virginia state line. Permits can be purchased at the county’s tourism department with offices in Corolla and Moyock. For more information: corollawildhorses.org 34

Beachin’ It When you go on vacation, you certainly don’t want to leave your pooch behind. Our pets are an important part of our lives, and we want them to enjoy this beautiful sandbar! After all, Fido enjoys digging his or her paws in the sand as much as you do.
Fortunately, the Outer Banks is a very dog-friendly place and there’s no doubt your dog’s tail will keep wagging all week long. There’s lots of four-legged fun to be had on the beaches, at the dog parks and all over town. But to ensure you and Fido have the vacation of a lifetime, we wanted to provide some tips, regulations and other useful information you’ll need to know to be sure that your canine buddy will be as happy as a clam! Every town, as well as Cape Hatteras National Seashore, has its own rules when it comes to keeping Fido on a leash as well as designated times you can bring your four-legged friend on the beach. All towns require that you remove dog waste and dispose of it in an appropriate container.
Dog Parks
Satterfield Landing Road Dog Park, Nags Head. Nags Head’s dog park is free, open to the public and does not require a permit. There are two parks, one for small dogs 30 pounds and under and one for larger dogs over that weight. The park is located on the grounds of the Dare County Recreation Park at 227 West Satterfield Landing Road. There’s plenty of room for your doggie to play! Water and doggie waste bags are available. Kitty Hawk Dog Park. Located just off W. Kitty Hawk Road, the park is open to both residents and visitors of Dare County. In order to receive the keycode for the park, dog owners must complete an application that can be found at darenc.com/how-do-i-/register/for-the-kitty-hawk-dog-park. Owners must provide a rabies certificate as well. 40

Pet Safety Tips
You’ll find that many of the same safety tips that apply to us while vacationing on the beach also apply to our furry friends. To ensure everyone enjoys these beautiful dog days of summer, here are just a few tips to keep Fido happy – and safe – while you are on the Outer Banks. Hydration, hydration, hydration! It can get hot here during the summer months, so whether you are spending the day on the beach or at the park, make sure you have plenty of water for your pet, along with plenty of shade. Overheating is a real threat to your pet during these hot months. Note: Signs to look for are excessive panting and drooling, wobbly (drunk-looking, disoriented) movement, vomiting, and a rapid heart rate. Overweight dogs, the very young and very old, and breeds with long hair or flat-faces (like pugs and bulldogs) are at a higher risk of heat stroke. Try to keep your dog from taking in too much salt water, as it can lead to diarrhea and vomiting. While it typically runs its course within a day, it can be a bummer for you and your dog. Dogs can drown, too. Make sure whatever precautions you take for yourself and your family when it comes to water safety, you do the same for Fido. Dogs can get caught in rip currents or hurt from high surf just like we can. Ouch, that sand is hot, especially for your furry friend. A good rule of thumb is that if it is too hot for you to walk on without shoes, it’s definitely too hot for your dog. Consider keeping your

YAPPY HOUR! Call for schedule
Pick Up the Poop!
Our island is simply beautiful, and we all want to keep it that way. Dog poop is a huge pollutant that can get washed into our oceans and sounds and have negative impacts on our fragile ecosystem. Besides, dog feces is not only really unpleasant to step in, swim near, or lay your beach towel next to, it can be extremely harmful to both people and wildlife. So don’t forget to clean up after your dog and dispose of it in the trash can! As you can see, the Outer Banks is the perfect place to visit with your four-legged pal as long as everyone follows a few simple guidelines! Miles of beaches, trails, walking paths, and parks make it fun and easy to get out and explore with Fido. You’re even likely to find a cafe or two that will welcome your pooch on their outdoor patio, and many of our shops even have souvenirs for your buddy as well. More and more of our rental homes and hotels are becoming pet friendly, making it easier than ever to bring your canine friend along with you on vacation. There’s no reason to leave your dog at home anymore, and as long as you play it safe and are respectful of our unique environment, you’re both sure to have a tail waggin’ good time!

hen it comes to renting out your vacation home, you want to be sure the experience is a pleasurable one for your guests – and also for you. By using one of the Outer Banks’ expert property management companies, you can relax in knowing that it is in good hands and say goodbye to the stress and hassle of trying to be your own property manager.
According to the leading real estate experts, there are numerous benefits to using a property management company. For one, property managers have marketing efforts far greater than an individual owner, points out Douglas Brindley, owner, president and general manager of Brindley Beach Vacations and Sales. That translates into more bookings for your property. Brindley Beach Vacation and Sales has a 34-year history of being well known and respected property management company, and has a marketing capability that has a huge reach among past renters and future guests, said Brindley. It also has an in-house maintenance staff to keep guests and homeowners happy. With Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) such as VRBO, Homeaway and AirBnB implementing huge traveler fees, more and more rental guests are discovering that it is better to book direct, according to Brindley. In fact, he predicts that in the near future, OTAs will require that they set rates with no control by the owner. That’s just one reason why utilizing a real estate agency just makes good sense. “Maintenance services are hard to find on a

timely basis (like right now, today),” Brindley said, but noted that local rental agencies have relationships with all vendors. In addition, “Off-season inspections on the homes are done on a regular basis.” Brindley points out that it makes a difference that guests know they have a person or agency close by that can help them with any needs – and do so on a timely basis. A real estate agency can also head off potential problems with a rental guest. “Real estate agencies drive by the home and will detect a tenant who is acting wrong or simply should not be there,” he adds. Elaine Breiholz, property manager for Carolina Designs Realty, echoes Brindley. “Using a property management company has many benefits, and primarily eases the stress on a homeowner.”
She pointed out that unless a homeowner lives nearby and is able to handle maintenance issues themselves, it’s simply more practical to use a property management company to coordinate maintenance and repairs, provide immediate response and serve as a buffer between the guest and the owner. In addition to marketing, mainte“We study market nance and customer interface, Breiholz said trends, and use this other services that are knowledge when performed by a property setting rental rates management company include collecting rents, for optimal rental insurance payments and performance.” taxes, filing sales and oc- Elaine Breiholz cupancy taxes and providing monthly statements, as well as continually keeping owners informed on important safety concerns and general local issues. “As a hands-on business with 30 years of experience, Carolina Designs helps second homeowners both rent and maintain their Outer Banks home and protect their investment,”Breiholz said. “We study market trends, and use this knowledge when setting rental rates for optimal rental performance.” Breiholz added that Carolina Designs has proven advertising channels for good exposure, and its solid history gives the consumer a high level of confidence in the quality of homes the company represents. “We work directly with prospective tenants through the initial inquiry, all the way to the end of a tenant’s vacation,” she continued. “After each stay, guests are asked to provide feedback through an online survey and the information is distributed to all our staff and shared with homeowners so that any concerns can be addressed promptly and properly.”

Breiholz added that Carolina Designs is a small company by choice, with an inventory of only about 350 homes. “By maintaining a focus on the essentials, clean homes, responsive maintenance, effective marketing, customer care and innovative technology, we provide outstanding results to our owners and a rewarding vacation experience to guests.” All properties, Breiholz stressed, offer keyless entry and are clean and inspected after each rental in accordance with Carolina Designs Realty housekeeping and inspection guidelines. “In addition to our knowledgeable reservations staff, we have a skilled maintenance team and strive to handle any issues “the same day” whenever possible. Corolla Classic Vacations is also a small real estate agency that specializes in property management. With a collection of about 250 vacation rental homes, it prides itself on its attention to detail, aiming to deliver the best service to homeowners and their guests. “We represent only the highest quality vacation homes, along with owners who are equally as committed to maintaining their homes,” their website reads. “Every guest receives our personal attention, which is why so many of our guests return year after year.” Whatever property management company you choose to use, you’ll be certain to discover the joys of your real estate investment without any of the stress and hassle that can be associated with renting it on your own.

Top Picks Summer Reading for
By MEAGHAN BEASLEY
Welcome to another beautiful summer on the Outer Banks! We know you’re ready to hit the beach, set up your umbrella and crack a spine on a brand new book. Local history, fiction by Outer Bankers, children’s books and stories of nostalgia – we’ve got a few you should look into.
Desperately Seeking Colonists It’s the question no one can leave alone: What happened to the Lost Colonists? Every year, researchers hit the Outer Banks and surrounding mainland with their teams and theories looking for evidence of the fate of England’s first settlement in the New World. Andrew Lawler, contributing writer to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Smithsonian, became intrigued by the Lost Colony during childhood visits to the Outer Banks and decided to take on the mystery for himself in his new book The Secret Token: Myth, Obsession, and the Search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke (Doubleday, hardcover, $29.95). At the crux of the puzzle is the secret token – a Greek cross – which colonists were to carve into the wall of the Roanoke settlement should they have been forced to leave against their will, signifying duress. But no secret token was found, leaving history to ponder where they went and why they left apparently of their own free will. On his quest, Lawler talks to everyone from esteemed university professors, archaeologists, and scientists to renowned local historians, even conspiracy theorists. In seeking answers, he examines how the centuries old unanswerable question of what became of our first settlers has played on the country’s fears and defined parts of our national identity. Relying on family trees and DNA testing, artifacts found in Hatteras and inland, and oral history, Lawler leads the reader to draw their own conclusions about the fate of the Lost Colony.
Local Novelists Hit it Big
Colingtonian Michelle Young-Stone’s previous novels of magical realism, akin to Alice Hoffman, received national critical acclaim. In her latest endeavor, Lost in the Beehive (Simon & Schuster, paperback, $16), Young-Stone tells the story of Gloria Ricci, a closeted gay 70

woman of 1960s and 70s New Jersey who is visited by visions of compassionate, spectral bees. When her marriage to a North Carolina man takes an unexpected turn, she must find the strength to stand up for herself with the help of her family, friends - and hive. Young-Stone was inspired to write the book based on meeting a young Outer Banks man while vacationing here as a teenager; the man confessed he could never admit to his friends and family he was gay. She based one of the main characters in the book on him in hopes that he was able to find a way to live an open and happy life. Cass Morris has spent part of every summer of her life on the Outer Banks (not to mention a few seasons working at the Island Bookstore) and calls this area her second home. All those who know her recognize Morris as the girl with either her nose in a book or a pen in her hand. So, it comes as no surprise that Cass is now joining the ranks of Published Author. This year sees the release of Morris’ debut novel From Fire Unseen, Book 1 Aven Cycle (Daw, hardcover, $26), an epic historical fantasy set in an alternate Rome. The first in a series, this spellbinding page-turner melds Roman politics with romance and magic, perfect for fans of Game of Thrones. Ralph Webster broke onto the local book club scene two years ago with his debut historical fiction novel, A Smile in One Eye, a Tear in the Other, based on the true story of his family’s survival in WWII Europe. The book received rave reviews and Webster is back this summer with a new historical novel, One More Moon: Goodbye, Mussolini! One Woman’s Story of Fate and Survival (CreateSpace, paperback, $15.99). Elsa, nearing 100 years old and ensconced in a Portland nursing home, recounts her days in Naples as the co-owner of a pension with her husband at the beginning of World War II. At first a joy to leave behind England for the glorious sunrises and moonlit nights of Italy, Elsa and her family find their business struggling as the noose of anti-Semitism under Mus-
solini’s rule tightens around their world. It soon becomes clear that Elsa and her family must flee Italy to America before it’s too late. Webster perfectly captures the voice of middle-aged Elsa, based on his grandmother, plunging the reader into her world with this highly readable, fast-paced novel.

Because Education Can be Fun
Celebrating her 30th anniversary as the Crabby Lady, Suzanne Tate returns with the thirty-ninth entry in her Outer Banks Nature Series for children. Merri-Lee Monarch: A Tale of a Big Trip (Nags Head Art, paperback, $4.99) is beautifully illustrated by James Melvin, artist for the series since its conception. Merri-Lee flew merrily all day long. She liked to fly around in a garden that was full of flowers. Fun for children of all ages and a collectible for those in the know, the Crabby Lady never disappoints.
Merri-Lee Monarch A Tale of a Big Trip
Suzanne Tate Illustrated by James Melvin
The story of the Wright Brothers’ first flight on a sand dune in Kitty Hawk (now part of Kill Devil Hills) is a true tale of American innovation and invention, fascinating to both adults and children. And while the story has been told many times throughout the years, it never gets old. And in The Wright Brothers’ First Flight: A Fly on the Wall History (Capstone, paperback, $7.95), learning is fun when the tale is narrated by Maggie and Horace, two flies who happened to be present to watch the brothers – from their small bicycle shop in Ohio through to their multiple test flights in North Carolina. Included in the back of the book are a glossary of terms and list of resources for children who want to further explore flight.
For the Love of Reading
In a world that has become obsessed with goals and daily planners, we suggest you throw one more list in the mix: 100 Books that Changed the World (Universe, hardcover, $29.95). Listed in chronological order beginning in 2800 BC to the present and giving two full-color pages to each title, authors Scott Christianson and Colin Salter identify the one hundred manuscripts that have defined modern humanity and continue to be relevant. These books are not only still accessible to current readers, they are entertaining, funny and mind-bending. Philosophy, history, fiction, business, parenting, graphic novels and children’s literature are all represented in this comprehensive list. From the I Ching, Aesop’s Fables and Don Quixote to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, A Brief History of Time, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, this book contains the ultimate Reader’s Goal List. So, after you’ve completed your morning shell collecting adventure, walked a daily mile to Duck Donuts and back, worked on the family jigsaw puzzle, seen at least one site of educational value, and spent a few hours on the beach, you can feel the wonderful goal-achieving satisfaction of sitting down with a good book. Meaghan Beasley is celebrating fifteen years of working at Island Bookstore, where every year her To Be Read pile spills further off the bed table and covers the surrounding floor. She lives in Kitty Hawk with her fabulous husband and 12-year-old dog – but let’s face it, he pretty much lives like an only child.
