Resting Places of the Past

he barely discernible path veers off the dirt road in Nags Head Woods, up along a high ridge.

Placing shells on tombstones is a tradition that some say symbolizes the connection of the spirit to water and the restful sounds of the ocean. Others believe the shells symbolize protection in the afterlife, or simply that the departed person has not been forgotten.

Members of a small community in this maritime forest spent their entire lives — or, tragically, only a few short days — on this ridge. They farmed and fished and grew gardens in their yards. They had pigs, horses, and chickens. They traveled back and forth between Nags Head and what is now Duck on a rugged road that aligned with the trail leading to the cemetery.

Clair, donated a portion of her family’s land in Nags Head Woods to The Nature Conservancy, which owns and manages 1,200 acres of the preserve, and she sold the rest of the huge tract at a reduced price to the town of Kill Devil Hills, where the town built its municipal buildings. A dazzling character, who in her lifetime, worked as a model, a ferryboat operator, a psychologist, and a realtor, St. Clair died in March 2003 at 94 years old.

But in that quiet cemetery where St. Clair’s ancestors are buried, those that came before her are lost to eternity, barely remembered except for some letters carved in marble slabs. A determined few still come to visit the remote location, mostly in the winter when the weather has cooled and the trail is less covered. Otherwise time seems to have forgotten Jesse and Penelope Baum’s little cemetery. It does not appear to be tended, yet it is well preserved in its serene setting. Not far from the graveyard is a live oak with a girth that would make a redwood proud.

Stout branches on other nearby live oaks reach far into the forest, bringing out repressed yearnings to climb a tree. Nearby, thick overgrown vines inspire visions of Tarzan swinging through the forest.

“It is kind of romantic, in a Heathcliff-y kind of way,” says Cola Vaughn, a real estate broker and history buff from Nags Head as he escorts a small group to the cemetery one late afternoon.

Back on the dirt road, one of the two Tillett family cemeteries in Nags Head Woods can be seen off to the right behind a wire fence. Although there are some faded silk flowers in vases, distant relatives have clearly not been looking after the graves. It’s no wonder — Dolly Tillett, who was born April 10, 1776, died on August 20, 1829 so it would be hard to find fault in faded memories.

Such is the case with many cemeteries on the Outer Banks. Along with the

Some have headstones that have been tossed awry by storm-driven tides and winds, with no one available to right the indignity.

Others are bordered by eroding shorelines that are undermined by constant wave action. In the worst cases, caskets have floated to the surface or even been strewn about and destroyed during storms.

Yet the Outer Banks, colonized for more than four centuries, has many cemeteries that are revered as places of beauty and spirituality, where the living can visit to honor their ancestors or just stroll around to marvel at the mystery of life and death.

In the 1999 book Sacred to their Memory: The Dare County Cemetery Survey, Amy Midgett Gamiel and Lois Johnson Meekins identify local graves of deceased people dating back to the 1700s, while also listing their life spans and where they were buried. Some of the largest cemeteries — Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese, Hill Top Cemetery in Colington, Roanoke Island Memorial Garden Cemetery on the north end of the island, Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Manteo, and the Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk — have thousands of listings. Cemeteries from Stumpy Point to Corolla to Rodanthe to Ocracoke include surnames of family branches that have intertwined over vast spans of time and geography on the Outer Banks, through birth and through marriage: Miller, Scarborough, Meekins, Davis, Austin, Sawyer, Twiford, Beasley, Harris, Beecham, Fearing, Daniels, Etheridge, Baum, Tillett, Collins, Dough, Gaskins, Payne, Cahoon, Peele, Owens, Spencer, Moore, Gray.

Some names, rumor has it, go back as far as the Roanoke colonists and the infamous 1587 Lost Colony. The most common name of all, including all its iterations, is Midgett — it takes up two-and-a-half pages in the book. It’s not unusual for one community to have several — even numerous — Midgett family cemeteries.

Only one name in the index is listed as a slave: “Pomp,” who is buried in Stumpy Point Cemetery. His record states that Samuel Midgett sold him in

1811 to Elizabeth Mann. But many of the African-American families from Manteo have surnames that may also have origins in slavery.

With rising seas along the Outer Banks, cemeteries have become more threatened by overwash, elevated ground water, and shoreline erosion. In “Cemeteries in the Sea” by William J. Neal and Orrin H. Pilkey, the authors say that sound side cemeteries are being undermined or breached. One example they cite is Portsmouth Island, the abandoned village south of Ocracoke where a community cemetery is almost completely lost.

“Located on the back side of the island, the sea level rise has flooded what was once dry land from the sound side, and the only evidence of the cemetery is a few remnant stones in the salt marsh,” they write. “Clearly, this 19th century cemetery was not originally placed in the marsh, so its current location is evidence of sea level rise.”

The Salvo Community Cemetery, often called the Midgett Cemetery, has about 25 gravesites located near the parking lot in the middle of the National Park Service’s Salvo day-use area. The cemetery survey book, however, includes records of 32 stones.

“It’s suffered some pretty bad erosion over the past few years,” says Jenny Creech, president of the Hatteras Island Genealogical and Preservation Society.

Creech says that the graveyard has not been maintained over the years, and funding options have been limited because it’s a private cemetery. According to Creech, at least two tombs have been exposed.

One of the graves in the cemetery is around 144 years old. Wooden coffins from that time can be vulnerable in wet locations, so the Preservation Society has obtained approval to build about 200 feet of bulkheads and/or temporary sandbags to protect the shoreline there.

Under the umbrella of the nonprofit Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association, the Preservation Society is seeking to raise funds online through GoFundMe for the bulkheads and the sandbags. Meanwhile, Creech says she has put up a fence and a “private property” sign to keep people from inadvertently crossing through the cemetery to get to the sound.

As strange as it might seem to some from out of state, it is not unusual in northeastern North Carolina to come across a graveyard just about anywhere — including people’s yards.

In North Carolina, as long as basic regulations are met, there is no prohibition from burying a person on your property. With more land being developed, sometimes burials will be relocated to a communal cemetery, says Allen Dew, who maintains a cemetery census in numerous North Carolina counties. But the high cost of relocation — $1,000 or more per grave, he says — has spurred more developers to just fence off the cemetery and build around it. Unfortunately, there have also been instances where developers have been accused of building right over or through gravesites.

For the Kight family, a solution to development around their Lindsey family plot in Barco has worked out just fine, says Rodney Kight, who has five generations of family buried on the front grounds of Currituck High School.

The family sold about 50 acres of property to the county around the early ‘70s, he says, which precluded any more family members from joining their deceased relations. But Kight’s 84-year-old mother, Mary Kight — a Lindsey by birth — often brings flowers on special occasions to family members buried in that fenced-off plot.

“She probably is much more attentive to it than anyone,” Kight says.

Old Currituck County families are not to be outdone by old Dare County families in their deep roots and their devotion to community and family. Not only did Kight’s grandparents live one house from the graveyard, both he and his mother were raised about a quarter mile away from the spot. In those earlier days, Kight says, when people died, “you put ‘em in the ground,” right there on your land.

Kight’s grandmother, Edna Walker Lindsey, died on her 100th birthday, “to the day,” he says. She was a skilled seamstress, renowned for making little animals out of fur that she would sell for $10 to $15. “She was a hustler,” Kight recalls. “She was pretty self-sufficient...sharp as a tack.” Her husband, Nathan Walker Lindsey, died at age 61, probably from cancer.

And it’s a comfort to his mother to be able to go down the road to visit her parents’ graves and honor their memories. It’s what family members did in her generation, before all the land started being sold off.

Even back in Nags Head Woods, where four graveyards are tucked among trees that did not exist when these burials took place, strangers will still veer off the dirt road to look at the headstones and contemplate what came before. For a slab of stone with a name carved on it, few historic remnants bear a message as simple, compelling, and powerful: This was a life. He was 19 at the time, but the trip marked the first of many this world-renowned bird expert and lifelong naturalist would make to these barrier islands.

t was February and we were in the middle STORY BY of a winter storm. I remember watching Michelle Wagner the birds react to the conditions,” says Kaufman, who is the originator and editor of the Kaufman Field Guides. “The birds were really abundant and I remember it made a big impression on me.”

Kaufman’s first impression of the birds that gather and live on Outer Banks has lasted a lifetime. As he prepares to return this fall, he doesn’t hesitate to rank this region as one of the best birding areas in North America.

But although this area has always been a favorite spot for the winged set, without an idea that was first batted around the offices of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Outer Banks may never have gained the recognition it deserves as a prime destination for birders from all over the world.

WOW Takes Flight Twenty-one years ago, Mike Bryant stepped in as project manager of the six wildlife refuges in northeastern North Carolina. Before that, he worked in the Rio Grande Valley, a region of Texas that hosted a huge birding festival to bring local wildlife organizations, the community, and businesses together.

During his first year at his post here, Bryant suggested starting a similar festival on the Outer Banks to the refuges’ visitor services manager, Bonnie Strawser.

“I told him I thought it was a great idea but that we were slammed with other projects. But when your boss asks a third time, you know it is not going to go away,” Strawser jokes. So refuge leaders collaborated with one another, the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, and others and it wasn’t long before the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival was born.

Two decades later, Wings Over Water (WOW) is a fixture among mustattend birding festivals across the country. An annual National Wildlife Refuge fundraising event, it now draws more Mike Bryant was the first person to sugthan 300 participants every fall from all gest starting WOW in northeastern N.C. over, including Germany, England, and more than two decades ago. the Netherlands, says WOW coordinator, Steven Brumfield. Last year, participants from 39 states were represented at the festival that includes not only birding, but also paddling, natural history programs, nature art and photography classes, and nature field trips that span a six-county region in northeastern North Carolina.

“The Outer Banks is easily considered one of the top 10 birding sites in North America,” says Kaufman, who will be the 2016 WOW keynote speaker.

“If it wasn’t partly for the good publicity of Wings Over Water, birders may not have even begun to mention it. Now, if you talk to any birder in North America they know about the Outer Banks.”

Kaufman, who also served as the keynote speaker for WOW back in the early 2000s, says that the Outer Banks has the perfect combination of birding opportunities. “You can jump on a boat and go out to the Gulf Stream to see shorebirds or spend a couple of days on the refuges or inland birding.”

Pat Moore of Buxton agrees. She’s been involved with WOW since its inception and still remains an integral part of the festival 20 years later. Her main charge is organizing the birding trips and their leaders, who she says are the backbone of the festival.

When asked what her favorite bird is, she’ll say it’s whatever bird she’s watching at that particular moment. But if you press her, she’ll tell you that she loves sparrows because she likes to hear them sing.

“I always tell people that I like to watch birds with my ears,” says Moore, who adds that one of her greatest desires is to have people enjoy birds the way she does.

Aside from the boost the festival gives to the economy in the off-season, Moore said the festival makes residents more aware of how bird habitats (including the shore, marshlands and forests) are fragile places that need recognition, respect, and protection.

The Outer Banks and its surrounding region are part of the Atlantic Flyway, and more than 400 bird species live or migrate here, so it’s not surprising that it’s the perfect spot for a festival of this kind.

Sponsored by the nonprofit Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society, this year’s 20th Anniversary WOW kicks off on Tuesday, October 18 and runs through Sunday, October 23. It will feature 96 trips, classes, and programs that span a six-county region and six national wildlife refuges — including Alligator River, Pea Island, Pocosin Lakes, Mattamuskeet, Mackay Island, and Currituck national wildlife refuges.

For the second year in a row, a three-day WOW Encore will be held in December, purposely scheduled during the colder weather when flocks of migratory birds and waterfowl such as thunder swans, snow geese, and large duck populations are likely to be seen. Brumfield says the encore session allows room for more outdoor adventures during the fall season, particularly the popular paddling field trips.

In order to put WOW together, experts from across North Carolina volunteer their time and equipment by leading programs in their fields of expertise. Popular programs include field trips such as Beginning Birding at Bodie Island and Oregon Inlet (which will be led by Kaufman), Hummingbird Banding on Hatteras Island, Buxton Woods Maritime Forest Hike, and Birding on Portsmouth Island. A few new programs being offered this year include Purple Martin 101 and How to Listen: An Introduction to Birding by Ear. While WOW originally began primarily for birders, it’s certainly not just for birders. Its eclectic mix of field trips and programs

draws nature lovers, paddlers, and artists of all kinds. This year’s festival will even feature more art with new classes by local artists. Painting Marshlands with Fay Davis Edwards, Sunrise Photography with Mark Buckler, Wading Birds in Pastel with James Melvin, Bird Drawing with John Sill, and Painting Watercolor Wetlands with Susan Van Gieson are all new on the itinerary.

As Brumfield points out, one of the many unique aspects of WOW is that it also gives participants a glimpse of some refuge areas that are usually restricted.

“Participants have the chance to see areas of the refuges that are either closed to the public or they can have access to certain areas during times when the refuge is usually closed,” Brumfield says. On this year’s schedule is a birding field trip to the restricted South Pond at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and a program that gives participants an opportunity to experience Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge at night.

WOW organizers make it a point to limit the number of participants in classes and field trips to no more than 12, and some programs such as Big Day Birding are limited to six people. This, Brumfield says, ensures that class

members are able to have a more intimate nature experience. While registration is open right up until the week of the festival, the more popular programs fill up when registration begins during the first part of May. But, he adds, there are plenty of programs to register for and many peripheral trips that take participants to more remote areas of the Outer Banks such as Portsmouth Island.

Building a Nest Over the years, WOW has become so popular that now it’s not only selfsustaining, but it’s also somewhat profitable — which has directly benefited the refuges.

But the refuges are not the only ones benefiting from the success of WOW. Over the years, it has brought more tourism to the area at a time when local businesses typically slow down. In addition, WOW organizers say it attracts visitors who may be more apt to visit our region during the off-season.

Brumfield points out that WOW not only brings participants to the region, but also their families and friends who all stay in hotels, shop, and go out to eat at local restaurants. “It bolsters the economy and encourages people to come back at other times of the year to see the Outer Banks when there are not 350,000 people here per week.”

The festival has also helped spread the word about the significance of northeastern North Carolina’s refuges and the important work that takes place there. Any proceeds from the festival are used to support refuge projects, including trail maintenance, signage, and refuge equipment. Profits also fund the transportation costs of school visits to the refuges.

While the festival hasn’t grown appreciatively over the years, it does have a strong following and many participants return year after year, Strawser says. “Every year, a few hundred come and experience the area, and they go home and tell others. Winter Is Coming: When the crisp fall air begins to creep over the Outer Banks, many of us welcome it with open arms as a wonderful relief to the extreme heat and busy summer season we’ve all just endured, but don’t forget: Winter is coming.

Before the cold strikes, begin safeguarding your home to ensure that it stays in the best shape possible during the upcoming season, whether you and your family plan to live in your home year-round or winter elsewhere.

The following checklist will help you protect your home against the harsh winter elements. While some of the items on this list may seem simple and obvious, remembering to practice these winterization procedures will prove to be beneficial throughout the season. Here are a few essential tips (including some you might not have thought of before) to keep your family warm, your energy bills at a minimum, and your Outer Banks home in tiptop shape throughout the cold months ahead.

A Home Winterization Checklist Turn off your water supply if you’ll be away for any length of time. This includes the main supply to the house, as well as any smaller ones that connect to fixtures such as sinks and toilets.

Blow out your entire water system with compressed air, if necessary.

Drain your outside showers and faucets.

Turn off any unnecessary electrical breakers.

Open all the valves in your kitchen and bathrooms to be sure that both the hot and cold lines are drained.

Securely store outside trash containers, lawn items, and any outdoor patio or deck furniture.

Winterize your refrigerator (including the icemaker inside of the freezer) to prevent severe mold and mildew growth.

Do this by removing all food and liquids and cleaning the appliance with mild soap and water or a vinegar solution before leaving the door open, unplugging the appliance to avoid unnecessary power usage, and even placing a box of baking soda inside to further combat odors.

Set your thermostat to at least 55 degrees while you’re away.

Consider insulating the pipes in unheated areas such as outdoor showers and crawl spaces.

As a further precaution, add non-toxic anti-freeze to all additional traps, toilet tanks and bowls, and even down the drains of sinks and tubs. myouterbankshome.com | Fall 2016

Winterize your pool to protect it from frozen water damage. First, lower the water level below the line of the skimmer and add winterizing chemicals before blowing the water from the plumbing lines. Next, plug the skimmer and pour anti-freeze into the skimmer box to keep any frozen rainwater from collecting on top. Finally, drain the water from all filter equipment, and cover the pool securely.

To winterize your hot tub you’ll want to drain the water completely, blow out the lines, and cover it securely.

Clean out your gutters and install leaf blockers over them. This will help stop excess debris from clogging them and accumulating frozen water. Be sure all downspouts are intact and free of debris beforehand for adequate drainage.

Drain your garden hoses and bring them indoors. Although it may seem like a small detail, it could prevent you from having to replace a split or cracked hose when spring rolls around.

Prepare your fireplace or chimney for a few roaring fires by making sure it’s cleaned out. (If you’re leaving town, make sure to get a chimney cap to reduce air transfer).

And Don’t Forget About Security Whether you remain on the Outer Banks or you head to another location for the winter, security measures are an important thing to consider no matter what. If you want to monitor your home from three states away or from your friend’s house right down the street, there are now unique systems on the market these days that will allow you to do exactly that.

Applications that enable you to control your home maintenance and security remotely, from cell phones or other mobile devices, are now widely available. Local Outer Banks companies such as R.A. Hoy and Johns Brothers Security also provide energy evaluations before winter hits and can install Wi-Fi thermostats, among other options, which can be controlled from anywhere in the world.

Many homeowners install Z-Wave smart thermostats to manage their energy usage throughout the year. These mobile-controlled home security systems can also adjust the air conditioning and notify you if a door is left ajar. During the harsh winter months, keeping your Outer Banks home sealed up tight is essential, and with these applications you can have peace of mind at all times that your home is safe and secure.

“We have seen a large increase in the use of interactive home security automation,” says Scott Twine, business development manager at Johns Brothers Security. “Homeowners are primarily interested in the convenience and added peace of mind of smart phone-controlled intrusion alarm systems and video surveillance systems.”

There are many different and interesting ways to use these devices and sensors, including leak detection.

“Users are able to receive mobile notifications from the thermostat if their pipes burst or there is unusual activity going on,” Twine says. “An undetected small water leak can cause major damage.”

Dual freeze and flood sensors are also a great addition to any winterization plan. These devices are placed in water heater drain pans, under sinks, and anywhere else that freezing temperatures or leaks could potentially cause damage. When activated, these sensors will signal the monitoring center and send you a push notification. A Z-Wave main water shutoff valve can also be installed to automatically shut off the water supply when a sensor detects a leak.

Other basic, yet important, winter security preparations include making sure that your lights are on timers and that your fire alarms and locks are up to date. (Or even upgraded completely: Some fixtures such as lights and locks can also be controlled remotely with the right system.)

The Outer Banks has long been known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, and stories of ghosts and hauntings abound — captivating locals and tourists alike, along with a fair share of other ghost-hunters and experts in the paranormal. Ghost tours, haunted houses, and newer attractions like PsychoPath flourish in an area rich with history — as if thousands of boats and an entire colony disappearing wasn’t enough!

These tales just might shiver yer timbers right down to your spines, maties.

Make no mistake about it: Unlike Mr. Tumnus from C.S. Lewis’ series The Chronicles of Narnia, this is one faun/satyr who isn’t going to guide your children through a magical land to safety. The specific accounts vary and sightings have been reported all over the country, but it is said that Goatman resides in a rickety old yellow house deep in Nags Head Woods. Our local boogeyman, he gets his kicks harassing and kidnapping teenagers — many of whom have made searching for him a daring pastime, not unlike The Blair Witch Project. If the images you can find of him online aren’t creepy enough to keep you up at night and out of those woods, just try picturing the details of his alleged satanic rituals performed on cats. Baaah, no big deal.

I’ve had the unique pleasure of spotting this gorgeous and haunting creature in my neighborhood and my yard, as have countless locals and visitors. The lore behind the “deer cow” — named for it’s unique coat that’s mostly white with brown specks — is all over the map. Is it Virginia Dare reincarnated? The ghost of Blackbeard himself?

A government experiment gone wrong, or a deer that mysteriously keeps rubbing up against a freshly painted white house time and time again? Nobody knows, but this guy has quite the local following, including his own Facebook page and countless posts from folks who have been able to grab their cameras in time to capture pictures of this beautiful four-legged mystery.

We can take comfort in knowing that some ghosts are here to protect, not spook or harm us. There are dozens of legends and books dedicated to sirens and spirits that haunt our seaside locales with good intentions.

›Wash Woods is the name given to Coast Guard Station #166, built in the early 1900s and restored by the Twiddy family. Located in North Swan Beach on the northernmost tip of the Outer Banks, it lies beyond where the sidewalk ends, quite literally. Over the years, many claim to have seen and heard the ghost of Mose, said to make his presence known occasionally in order to keep the station safe from harm. In recent years, one man who spent the night there awoke to find clothes he had cast in a wrinkled pile on his bed nicely folded into neat piles.

Now this is a ghost I’d like to meet — Mose, if you’re reading this I’m sure there’s a long line of folks who would be thankful for that kind of “haunting”…including this writer!

›The Gray Man is another old salt said

to lurk about near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, making himself known only to warn residents and visitors of incoming storms. He was supposedly a sailor who drowned in a hurricane at the turn of the last century, and it’s said that he returns to save others from the very same fate. Locals don’t dread the Gray Man — in fact, his presence is welcomed, and he’s accepted as one of the town’s residents by many who hope to be spared if anything wicked this way comes!

Located in Brigands’ Bay in Frisco, this magnificent live oak is legendary for its haunted history. Cora was a young woman who lived alone in a hut in the forest outside the settler’s village in the 1700s. She always carried a baby with her everywhere she went, yet no one in the community seemed to know her story or where she came from.

Accusations and suspicions about Cora began to mount not long before Captain Eli Blood’s ship was stranded offshore during a journey from Salem, Massachusetts. Hearing local gossip that included stories about a boy she touched who became gravely ill and cows she encountered that were rendered suddenly dry of milk, he tasked himself with determining whether or not she was, indeed, a witch.

His “tests” included tossing her in the sound to see if she would drown, “readings” of blood droplets in a bowl, and other methods used in the Salem witch trials. After a body mysteriously washed ashore, he proclaimed Cora a witch and sentenced her and the baby in her care to death, binding them to a live oak as he prepared to set them on fire.

When another captain NC.AOTP.COM tried to intervene and handle her alleged wrongs through the court system, lightning struck. Once the cloud of smoke cleared, onlookers saw what appeared to be a panther or a large cat escaping the scene. No other signs of human life remained — except four chilling letters found burned into the tree that can still be seen today: CORA. Small towns have always been infamous for their rumor mills, and while that last part still may ring true, at least the JOE SLEDGE consequences have become a tad less deadly!

You won’t have any trouble finding material on ghosts at many local establishments — including both historical texts and modern-day first-person accounts.

›The Whalehead Club in historic Corolla, constructed in the early 1920s by Edward Collings Knight, Jr. and his wife, Marie Louise, is well known for its haunted history and even hosts its own ghost tours. Both early inhabitants of the mansion as well as subsequent tourists or employees of the estate have reported everything from dogs barking at nothing to numerous accounts of WHALEHEADWEDDING.COM folks seeing individuals that were never really there in the first place. Whether the ghosts were clanging pots and pans in an empty kitchen, slamming doors, or just reading books, it was of small comfort to many on dark and stormy nights in that big old drafty mansion!

on Ocracoke has Mrs. Godfrey, a murder victim who reportedly roams around and first made herself known to her widower husband, whom many suspected of the violent crime. To this day, guests tell tales of her rearranging items, ROADTRIPPERS.COM wandering through the rooms, and even tucking them in at night.

›The Croatan Inn,

built around the 1930s, later became two well-known restaurants (Papagayos and Quagmires) before the building was torn down in 2005. It was a more than appropriate setting for a wildly popular haunted house that was held there over the fall months for many years. Rumored to be inhabited by the ghost of a woman in her 30s who many nicknamed “Jimmy,” a number of employees throughout the years — including yours truly — bore witness to her hijinks.

From turning lights on and off, to stacking dishes sky high in the kitchen, to voices calling out from the rooms upstairs when nobody was there…. We thought it sounded nuts too until we witnessed it firsthand with no other possible explanations to shrug it off.

›The Black Pelican Restaurant was once the old Kitty Hawk Lifesaving Station, and

in the late 1800s Keeper James Hobbs reportedly shot and killed an unruly young surfman by the name of T.L. Daniels right there in front of the crew. Past and present employees still claim to hear and see the ghost of Daniels to this day.

Most people see retirement on the Outer Banks as an opportunity to brush up on their golf skills or spend leisurely days on the beach reading accumulated piles of books. But for Hal Denny and the members of the Caring Hands ministry, it’s a chance to haul lumber, wield hand tools, and help others in need.

“The Caring Hands ministry of the Duck United Methodist Church is a group of 25 men and women that want to give back in our retirement to people in great need,” says the soft-spoken Denny. “We are disciples of James, and we believe that faith without good works is not enough.” By assisting those who have pressing home maintenance issues, but neither the financial nor the physical ability to handle it themselves, the members of Caring Hands are able to better their community.

“We started in the late ‘90s with mission trips to the Redbird Conference in western Kentucky. That was the impetus for the ministry. We were out there three or four consecutive years. Then the ministry started to gel.” Since that time, Denny’s team has worked consistently both locally and out of state in areas such as Biloxi, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina hit. It’s their dedication to serving others that keeps Caring Hands so highly in demand.

“We do it because we like to work with our hands and we’re able.” Denny lists retired general contractors and electricians among their members, but notes that they’re not all trained in trade. Denny, for instance, uses his skills to coordinate jobs, collect funds, and evaluate proposed projects. Together, he and his crew make a nice fit. “I don’t think that I would want our group to be any larger,” he adds. “It’s large enough that on any “The ministry is greatly given project we’re able to put a team together.”

But many other jobs are small, and often only take a few days. “We’ve built an untold number of handicap ramps and associated decks throughout Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, and Bertie counties,” Denny says.

Some jobs stick with him, both for their scale and the help they were able to provide.

“A few years ago we built a house for a gentleman in Pasquotank County whose home had been destroyed by a tornado. We also built a home for a disabled fellow whose home in Colington was completely destroyed by Hurricane Irene.”

Yet sometimes it’s the smaller jobs that make a profound difference in people’s lives and bring a light to Denny’s eyes. “There’s a young lady in Mann’s Harbor, a high school student. She and her boyfriend were in a car accident that left her unable to walk. We were able to rehab their home — widen doorways, build a handicap bathroom — so that she can move around on a motorized scooter, which we bought for her. And she has been able to go back to school because of that scooter.” He smiles, recalling an-

other project. “We helped another young lady in Wanchese with multiple sclerosis. She had to move back in with her parents. The house had little, narrow halls and doorways, which we widened. I drop in on her every once and while to see how she’s doing. We’re buddies.”

There’s no end to those who need Caring Hands, and projects can be as simple as doing odd jobs around the house for one of the widows in Duck Methodist’s congregation. However, most jobs come from outside sources such as the Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) organization where they find people in need through Social Services and refer them to Caring Hands. Caring Hands even rehabbed a building in Kill Devil Hills to provide ICO a permanent home.

“We also work with the Outer Banks Community Relief Foundation (OBCRF) — we get a lot of referrals from them. We go talk to the candidates, see what the situation is, get a feel for what’s needed,” Denny says. While Caring Hands has built many homes and rehabbed houses for accessibility, he adds that they make it a priority to do whatever is necessary. “The community that we serve frequently lives in trailer homes with deteriorated floors, leaking roofs, and rain coming in through the windows. We do a lot of work on old trailer homes because they’re the people in need.”

Projects can also come from word of mouth. “One of our key people, Shelby Hines — a retired contractor and our lead man in the field — became aware of a situation in Kitty Hawk. A single lady in a trailer park was in desperate need of a new roof. We got her to ICO, and they came up with some of the materials, but not all. An individual who lives in that community heard about what was going on and gave us a $500 check to help out.”

Caring Hands provides 100 percent of the labor on every job they take, but funding and materials come from a variety of sources depending on who they’re working with. If they’re partnering with ICO or OBCRF they generally get the cost of the materials from those organizations, though some of it might come through Social Services. At other times, when they’ve worked with Liberty Christian Church and the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, Caring Hands has provided half the funding.

Methodist are very generous and funding is not usually a problem. Most recently, they were able to buy the materials for the new Food Pantry, all of which they purchased locally.

“We never seek publicity, we don’t want it,” Denny says. “Well, you know, Jesus said, when you pray, pray alone.” He shrugs. “When you do these good things, you’re not doing it for yourself.” Denny is proud, yet humble, when it comes to the work he and his fellow team members provide through Caring Hands. “The ministry is greatly bonded to one another, we enjoy great camaraderie, and we neither seek nor desire any special recognition. We are servants.” With a twinkle in his eye and a smile, he adds, “We have fun.”  Meaghan Beasley is a freelance writer on the Outer Banks. While she wielded a hammer on three Habitat for Humanity houses, she could learn a lot from the Caring Hands team.

lackbeard’s Crew is a nonprofit dedicated to historical preservation, a relatively dry description that could apply to many organizations.

However, most other nonprofits dedicated to historical preservation probably don’t spend their board meetings discussing how their black powder supply is holding up, the construction of their new, lightweight pillory, or conclude their meetings with ceremonial rum shots. And most nonprofits dedicated to historical preservation aren’t run by people who, for one reason or another, decided to become pirates.

“A lot of times we’re out all day long in the heat in period garb, and sometimes they don’t hydrate as much as they should,” says Constable Heartless as he gestures toward his crew while the meeting dissolves into laughter, calls for more rum, and a suggestion that they should train their rats to start stealing wallets. “This is the result.”

Constable Heartless, a.k.a. Randy Gnatowsky, is the captain of Blackbeard’s Crew, or, as he prefers to put it, “Acting captain, in the absence of our dearly departed Edward Teach.” He and his fellow pirates are a living history group, committed to teaching people about the life of pirates in the late 17th and early 18th centuries at events such as the upcoming Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree on Ocracoke Island and the annual Blackbeard’s Festival in Hamp-

ton, Virginia. They set up an encampment where they demonstrate skills such as seamanship, weapons and tactics, shipboard medicine and surgery, cooking, rope making, and navigation. They also answer questions, in character, for curious onlookers.

“Our job is to entertain and amaze, and by doing so, bring visitors back to the Golden Age of Piracy to see what it was like.” says Constable Heartless.

“Our purpose is really to preserve the skills and talents of the 18th century mariners, because that’s being lost. Even the Coast Guard and the Navy don’t teach anyone how to navigate anymore. It’s all GPS. No celestial navigation.

No dead reckoning. And we try to dispel the myths and rumors created by Hollywood. For instance, do you know the first time someone ever walked the plank on a pirate ship? It was in 1935, during the first Errol Flynn movie, Captain Blood.”

The Constable likes to make a distinction between what they do and reenactments. “Reenactors generally go out and play war,” he says. “We actually bring history to life.”

Of course, that’s not to say that playing war is above them. During large events such as Ocracoke’s Pirate Jamboree they stage full-scale naval battles to reenact Blackbeard’s last stand near Springer’s Point and to raid a merchant

vessel using real ships that, while not quite period, are “pretty close” to the ones that Blackbeard and the British Royal Navy used.

Additionally, the crew has quite the collection of swords, small arms, and cannons, and it’s clear that their weapons demonstrations are a favorite of festival-goers – and the pirates themselves.

“Blowing stuff up is our specialty,” says Nancy Whiskey, a.k.a. Stephanie Fitzsimmons. For Nancy, a big part of her decision to become a pirate was getting to play with weapons.

“I had a 10-year history with cannons, and I really missed being behind the gun line,” she explains. “This gave me the opportunity to get on a gun line again and blow things up, which I have an affinity for doing. And I love edged weapons. I can play with swords and blow things up, and I can be just as happy as anybody else.”

The weapons were also a draw for former stunt man Gibbet Bones, a.k.a.

Russ Mosher. “There’s a certain elegance and art to wielding edged weapons, and this is my outlet for that,” says Gibbet.

For others, it was a simple sense of community that brought them to piracy.

“My brother (the ship’s surgeon, Mr. Cutter) was pirating for many years, and he invited me to join in. It took maybe a day before I said, ‘Yup. That’s home. That’s family,’” recalls Mistress Hope, the crew’s “camp mom,” who’s also known as Amanda Gundry. “When we’re out there doing our gigs, it almost feels more like home than every day does.”

Kids who attend Blackbeard’s Crew’s events also have the option of enrolling in Scallywag School, and one of Constable Heartless’ favorite parts of being a pirate is the expression of wonder and amazement on the faces of their younger attendees. “I do it for the kids,” he says. “We go to events with thousands of children, and for me, every single one of them is like my grandbabies.

“We teach them wholesome things like how to talk like a pirate, how to wield a cutlass, how to

fire a flintlock – things that children really should know,” he adds.

And although he notes that most of his actual grandbabies aren’t terribly impressed with his pirating skills, he’s quite proud of his 14-year-old grandson, Slice, (a.k.a. Tyler Bielenberg) who has become an expert artilleryman.

Slice is one of a few kids that are part of the crew. But the distinction of being the youngest member of Blackbeard’s Crew belongs to two-year-old Barnacle Bean, a.k.a. Eilidh Strum. Though Barnacle Bean didn’t choose a life as a pirate, she does seem to enjoy it, and she performs essential functions with the crew such as directing the memorial march to Springer’s Point during Ocracoke’s Pirate Jamboree, her tiny finger pointing the way ahead as she rides in a basket on her dad’s back. In fact, Ocracoke is where Barnacle Bean took her first steps, and two years before that, it was the place where her mother learned that Barnacle Bean was on the way.

The rest of the crew has a variety of reasons for becoming pirates, including a desire for camaraderie, the excitement, and for at least one crewmember, a “midlife crisis.” The life of a pirate is clearly not for everyone, but those who choose it wouldn’t have it any other way.

“You ask why do we do it? This, right here,” says Constable Heartless. “This is a spectacular group of individuals.

The ones that are sitting here tonight, I’d put them up against any other group of people anywhere.”  Katrina Mae Leuzinger lives with her husband and their fearsome toddler. When she’s not writing, she prepares elaborate meals, cheats at video games, and plays the guitar (badly).

A certain smell. A certain dish. Something — that elusive something — that takes you back to another time and place. I love it when a recipe whisks me off somewhere. (Heh! I said “whisks.”)

I wanted a heart-warming meal to take that fall chill off, so I opted for ease and simplicity with a seafood chowder adapted to the slow cooker, a seriously foolproof bread, and a (literally) simple-as-pie dessert. It was then that I had my Proustian moment — an involuntary memory elicited by an innocent cue — in this case, from seafood chowder. We live in the present, yet we are drawn to the past. Well, Scotty just beamed me back to 1982 when I entered the first “Taste of the Town” cooking contest in Danville, Virginia. I made seafood chowder, and it was the judges’ top choice in the entrée category and the overall winner of the entire contest with more than 600 participants. I won $250!

Now I’m sharing that delicious memory with you. I remember making this so many years ago for Mr. Hawthorne with love and frozen and canned seafood, which is all I had available at the time. What makes it even better this time around is that we live on the Outer Banks where we can get the freshest seafood around.

fall chowder RECIPES

Makes about a gallon

3 carrots, peeled and diced 3 stalks celery, diced 3 onions, chopped 3 potatoes, diced 1 qt. carton vegetable stock 13.7 oz. carton vegetable stock 1 pt. cream 1 lb. mussels 12 - 16 clams, in shells ½ lb. shrimp, peeled and de-tracted (That’s not a vein going down the back. It’s the digestive tract.)

1 lobster tail, meat removed ½ lb. mahi mahi, trimmed of any blood veins ½ lb. scallops 1 lb. snow crab legs, meat removed 1 lb. crab meat 1 cup dry sherry Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper, and nutmeg zest, to taste STEP 1. Place vegetables in slow cooker and cover with stock. Turn on high and leave for about two and a half hours, until the potatoes are tender. Add in the cream.

STEP 2. This is the time when you need to pay attention. First, add the clams and the mussels, and cook for five minutes. Then include the shrimp, lobster, mahi mahi, and scallops, cut into even pieces. Cook for 10 minutes. Finally, add the snow crab legs and crab meat, and set the slow cooker on warm for five minutes. You just want to heat the crab through. Stir in the sherry. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and some nutmeg zest. Now turn off the slow cooker, and you’re ready to eat!

One option is to top the chowder with crumbled bacon and chopped scallions. I also recommend adding a chiliinfused oil for punch and my Herbalicious Croutons for crunch.

Heat three tablespoons of oil and one tablespoon of crushed red pepper flakes. Stir them together for two minutes to infuse the flavor then add one tablespoon of Asian sweet chili sauce. Dot on the chowder to taste.

½ stick unsalted butter ¼ cup Bertolli extra-light olive oil 2 cloves garlic, finely minced Fresh herbs (about 2 TB each): sage, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and oregano 1 baguette, torn into pieces for a more rustic presentation Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the herbs and sauté a minute or so to infuse the flavors. Then add the garlic, stirring for a few seconds, but don’t brown the garlic or it will turn bitter. Toss the torn bread into the butter and herb mixture. Sauté for a few minutes, then pour a single layer of seasoned bread pieces onto a baking pan. Bake the croutons at 250° for about an hour until they’re crisp, tossing them every 20 minutes.

This chowder is not complete without a nice baguette so you can sop up every last drop of goodness. If you’ve ever been scared of making bread, you need not fear anymore. I’m giving you the keys to the kingdom here. The beauty of this bread is that it’s made almost entirely in your food processor. All you have to do is form the dough into baguettes or put it in loaf pans — or, if you want to be really creative, mold the dough into small boules that can be cooked, then hollowed out and used as serving containers.

Makes two baguettes

1 packet yeast 1 tsp sugar ½ cup warm water 3 ½ cups unbleached King Arthur all-purpose flour, plus extra for shaping the loaves 1 cup warm water 1 TB sugar 1 ½ tsp salt STEP 1. In the bowl of a food processor, pour the yeast over a half cup of warm water. Sprinkle the teaspoon of sugar over the yeast, stir to dissolve, and wait for the bubbles. (Yeast must eat! The bubbles are “proof” that the yeast is alive and producing carbon dioxide.) Once the yeast has proofed, add all the ingredients to the food processor. Process until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the side of the bowl.

STEP 2. Let the dough rise in the processor until it’s doubled, then pulse three or four times to deflate. Repeat this process of letting the dough rise and then deflating it two more times. Each successive rise will take less time.

STEP 3. Set the soft, sticky dough onto a lightly floured work surface, and gently rotate the dough until it’s lightly covered with flour and doesn’t stick. Using a dough scraper, divide the dough in half. The dough should naturally stretch lengthwise in one particular direction. Think of that as the grain of the dough as you shape each half into a five by eight inch rectangle.

STEP 4. Taking one of the rectangles, fold the top third down and gently seal the edges, then fold the bottom third up, pressing with your fingers to seal the seam. Turn the log over, seam side down, and start rolling the log back and forth until it’s stretched about 15 inches long. Try to keep as much air in the dough as possible without breaking the skin.

STEP 5. Pick the dough up and place it seam side down in the cradle of a baguette pan. If you don’t have a baguette pan, you can easily fashion one out of heavy-duty foil wrap. Repeat this process with the second piece of dough.

STEP 6. Let the loaves rise until they’ve doubled. While you wait for this final rise, place an iron skillet on the bottom oven rack and heat the oven to 450° — you want the pan to heat for a good 30 minutes before baking.

STEP 7. Once the dough has doubled, slash the tops about a quarter to a half inch deep at least four or five times with a sharp knife. The slashes act like steam vents, and the bread will open up during baking.

STEP 8. Mist the loaves with three to four sprays of water. Put the dough in the 450° oven and throw two cups of ice cubes in the iron skillet.

Steam and moisture are needed to produce a nice crisp crust, so you’ll want to mist the loaves again after the first three minutes, and once more three minutes after that.

STEP 9. Total bake time is about 20 to 25 minutes. If you have a probe thermometer, the bread is ready when it has an internal temperature of 200°. Let the loaves cool before you cut them since the flavors are still working while they’re hot. I recommend using one of the loaves for croutons and slicing the other for sopping.

For dessert, I don’t think you can beat pecan pie.

1 9-inch unbaked pie crust 1 cup light corn syrup 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 3 eggs, beaten 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted ½ tsp kosher salt 1 tsp vanilla 1 big heaping cup of pecan halves STEP 1. Heat oven to 350°.

STEP 2. Combine corn syrup, sugar, eggs, butter, salt, and vanilla.

Mix well. Pour the mixture into an unbaked pie crust and sprinkle with pecan halves — or be very obsessive-compulsive and individually place each pecan half just right. Bake about an hour and 15 to 20 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Tent with foil after the first 30 minutes so the edges and the pecans don’t brown.
