Welcome to the beach! It’s summer and you’re on vacation. Time to start playing in the sand! There's something special about the Outer Banks, and the world is still discovering its treasures 400 years after the first colonists landed on Roanoke Island. We hope that our magazine will inspire you to go out and explore the amazing things that define the Outer Banks. The creative crew at Three Dog Ink started working on this first edition of Duck, Corolla, and the Outer Banks about a year ago. We wanted to create something completely new. Something that would appeal to all of your senses and showcase everything that the Outer Banks has to offer. So we morphed into a square! New size, new focus, and a whole new vibe. Please explore the magazine cover to cover. You’ll find everything from funky shopping, a thriving independent food scene, outdoor adventures, and information about all of the ideal destinations for an active or laid-back getaway. We hope that you find this magazine to be a great companion for your beach visit, and please take us home, and keep in touch. Dare to be Square! Thanks,

For a few months out of the year, our beloved little sandbar goes from holding a sparsely populated community to booming with numbers comparable to that of a major city.

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

T

ourists – many of us wouldn’t be here without you, and some of you, like us, come and never leave. If you’re arriving on the weekend, Saturday in particular, the red carpet that’s been rolled out for you is a very, very, very long line of cars in stop and go traffic. When you finally cross that bridge, you’re either making a very hard left to sit in more hours of traffic heading to the northern Outer Banks, or you’re about to be rudely introduced to the concept of a turning lane on our bypass heading south (pro tip: the middle lane is not a driving lane, it’s a turning lane). Once you make it to your home away from home, it’s

game on – every day is like Christmas. The Hap-Hap-Happiest Christmas, as Clark Griswold would say. Some of you are first timers, and there are many repeat guests, with some of you coming here since your own childhoods from decades past, eager to share it with younger generations. You come solo, in pairs, or in groups of four or forty, and in all different shapes, sizes, and styles. While some of you have used personal references and done extensive research, others blindly choose our beloved barrier island as their destination of choice and hope for the best. May the odds be ever in your favor, Outer Banks-style.

SHADES

Tourists

The Planners Down to the minute and exact GPS location – you're not leaving anything to chance because you're going to milk every single second of this beach vacation, by God. You’ve spent hours upon hours researching accommodations, restaurants, opportunities for fun, and the pack with which you travel will follow your itinerary. Julie from The Love Boat could learn a thing or two from you. You know precisely what you want to do and when you’re going to do it; charter fishing, kayaking, surfing lessons, wild horse tour – booked ‘em last January. With grocery lists in hand, you’re armed with pre-packed coolers, playlists, magazines, and Sudoku puzzles, because you’ve read somewhere to expect a bit of traffic on check in days, and who wants to get bored while stuck in an hour or sixteen of traffic? You know who to call when your rental home doesn’t have a wine opener; after all, it says it right there in the catalog, for Pete’s sake, and after a 22 hour trip in a car crammed with relatives, that wine isn’t just going to sit there unopened and mocking you. You had the foresight to get each person in your party matching t-shirts so that you can commemorate the trip and identify one another in a crowd, but you’re no travel dictator. You’ve allotted everyone 45 minutes of “free time” each day, because after all, life’s a beach! Let them tease you about over-planning because you, my friend, maximized your vacation minutes.

The Social Media Detectives You might have made your mind up about a lot of things before you arrived, since your thorough analysis of sought-after recommendations from the right sources have described in great detail what your perfect vacation here should entail. Sure, you’ve researched online, but you need more than just one source to confirm you’re making the best possible decisions.

With modern technology, why take chances with the judgment calls of people and companies you’ve never heard of? Now, all you have to do is update your status to “I’m going to the Outer Banks, any must dos?” and BOOM. Donna from work says you have to go to that place near the end of the road, and the only way to see the sunset is from the top of the lighthouse. Your best friend from high school insists that one particular rental home is the only place to be, and to make sure and speak with Linda at the front desk for even more helpful tips upon arrival. You’ve found that soliciting recommendations through social media can be useful (and exhausting at the same time) but still totally worth it. Nobody’s going to tell you on Yelp or TripAdvisor that hanging plastic bags filled with pennies will chase away some of the flies in August, but your cousin Ann who you’ve never met chimed in on your thread, and now you’ve got one up on those other Pig Pens futilely swatting away. You’ve read enough “pro tips” to write your own book before ever getting here, and could probably teach us a thing or two.

Winging it. Really winging it. Other than securing a place to stay, you’re throwing caution to the wind. You don’t worry yourself over what to pack, or need to know details about where you’re going, ripping up your metaphorical list and casting its pieces into said wind. You don’t really know what you want yet, but you’ll know it when you find it – we hope. Because you’re on vacation, you’re relaxing, you’re chill. You’re just going with the flow, right? Perhaps you didn’t know or don’t care that the ocean is still cold in May, but you’re going in, come hell or high water – or nor’easter! And who says you have to have swimming or kayaking experience to go charging the open seas anyway? Whether seeking an adventurous experience or

FEATURE total relaxation, you’re confident you’ll end up in the right place at the right time. Strolling around a crowded shopping complex, you show up for dinner at one of the most crowded restaurants in town (which would be all of them at 7:00 in July or August.) Reservations? Nah! Your party of 14 doesn’t mind a little (or a lot) of waiting because, hey – you’re on vacation! You might happily move on to Plans B, C, and D and E, or you might be making lots of “notes to self” for the rest of the week for your next trip down. And possibly narrowing your parameters in the “winging it” department just a tad.

You laugh in the face of potential broken bones, choosing Duck Road as the perfect spot to try out roller blades or bikes for the very first time – a little wobbly, maybe – yet determined to kick this vacation’s butt. Next up are windsurfing, mini golf, go-karts, and kiting at sunset on Jockey’s Ridge. But make no mistake, you have kept plenty of room in the schedule for some serious beach time and wasting away in Margaritaville.

First Timers

We love you all, and even like most of you. And we know you love us, and especially this beautiful sandbar we call home – even if your first reaction to us living here was “who in the world lives all the way out there?” It can be tricky to get off the island sometimes, but it’s not traffic that hinders us from traveling in the summer months (especially the weekends). The responsibilities of work and day-to-day living refuse to leave us alone during your visit. Once in awhile we forget this, and we have fun doing it, but oh, how we pay without the luxury of sleeping late the morning after said fun. Things get rather intense, particularly during the summer months when, of course, you’re most likely to have time for a visit. We’ve developed a routine and survival strategy in the summertime, which involves both blowing off steam as well as finding some quiet time wherever we can get it. You’d think with enough practice we’d have the whole “gracious hosting” thing down by now, but even if we manage to stock the bar and fridge and provide clean sheets, I’m not sure our attitudes follow suit when we’re on day 36 of long and consecutive shifts. Either way, reunions are glorious for a bit, but when our time expires we most definitely turn into a pumpkin. And, we might be the tiniest bit jealous. We want to play too! Can you please come back in February when we can hang out? No? Why not?

Before vacation’s kickoff, you have been packed for at least two weeks and you’ve done 16 re-checks of said packed items, save for the long list of items that couldn’t be packed until the last hours before departure. SPF 3000 sunscreen? Check. Beach hats, cover-ups, flotation devices, gym shoes? Check. Outfit that looks like a cross between a hazmat suit and beekeeping protective gear? Possibly, check. You are prepared to have the best vacation ever, and will NOT be the one who gets the worst sunburn. You have questions. So many questions. Which one’s the ocean and which one’s the sound? Do people actually live here? Is the Alaskan King Crab local? Barrier islands can be confusing without a map, so it’s understandable when you need help distinguishing the sound from the ocean (somewhat). It’s not fair for us to assume you knew four-wheel drive vehicles work best for beach driving. There might be an entire Facebook page that went big-time locally thanks to pictures of station wagons getting towed out…just saying, friends. We can’t stop you, but generally speaking you’ll get uncomfortable (and make everyone else uncomfortable) wearing black ankle socks on the beach.

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

You immediately announce yourselves with “I used to live here,” “I live in a tourist area too,” “I’m from the Islands,” or just the staunch refusal to indulge in Tommy Bahama-esque anything and stay far, far away from chain stores and restaurants. You desire to separate yourselves from the negative stereotypes of tourists, in the hopes of having an authentic experience similar to being off work at your favorite hangout, but with entirely different surroundings. (We get it – we are you when we travel.) You’d prefer to dine and hang out at the establishments where locals hang out, because it’s what you know. You want to know where to go, and you are going to find out. You’ll ask your server, your bartender, your cab driver, and even the person in front of you in line at the grocery store wearing a local t-shirt and buying toilet paper, milk, pet food, ibuprofen, energy drinks, and beer. If you ask the right questions and know how to have a good time in general you'll definitely fit right in. When after a few vacation-style adult beverages, you tend to get pretty chatty and strike up conversations and share Vacation Town war stories, you know you’ve successfully infiltrated the local scene. We should know – most of us have done it all. But in the end, no matter how you managed to get to our little slice of paradise, we welcome you and hope you have an amazing vacation! Lindsey is a mom of three, freelance writer, kids yoga instructor, and active community volunteer. She has called the Outer Banks home since 1995, and if she knew what spare time meant to moms it is certain she’d have a fabulous list of hobbies to fill it!

WORTH THE T

DRIVE

he sand, surf, and sun is more than enough to keep us occupied all summer long, but there are a few experiences worth loading up the car and hitting the road for. Depending on where you’re staying, some of these excursions can be made in a few hours and others will take the day, but they are all fantastic destinations when you are stricken with sudden ambition to explore the Outer Banks. From natural history to lighthouses and aquariums, there’s certainly something fun and inspiring for everyone in your party to discover.

Wright Brothers National Memorial More than 100 years ago, self-taught engineers Orville and Wilbur Wright proved that man could fly with the first successful airplane flights on December 17, 1903. They were drawn to the Outer Banks for its enormous sand dunes, steady winds, and wide-open spaces. Today, a massive monument commemorating their achievement stands in Kill Devil Hills at the exact location in which the brothers made history. Visitors can explore the aviation museum adjacent to the monument, view replicas of the 1902 and 1903 gliders, and climb the hill. Attending a “hangar talk” with one of the park rangers is an experience both adults and children will remember. 1000 N Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills • nps.gov/wrbr

Jockey’s Ridge State Park The tallest active sand dune in the eastern United States, Jockey’s Ridge is a sight to behold and surely worthy of a few hours of your day. Both the Atlantic Ocean and Roanoke Sound can be seen from the top, making this a wonderful stop for photographers and nature admirers. The winds on the dunes are near constant and as such, perfect for wind sports. Those with a thirst for adventure will want to try hang gliding or paragliding right in the park, while visitors who like to keep their feet on the ground may want to bring a kite. From any dune, you can almost always see children running down the steeper slopes or sliding on a makeshift sled. 300 Carolista Dr, Nags Head • jockeysridgestatepark.com

Dolphin Tours While it’s true that you may spot the occasional fin while watching the waves at the beach, why not take a dolphin tour to really get an eyeful of these playful creatures? Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, like many visitors to the Outer Banks, only appear in the warmer months. Tours will take you to see the dolphins playing in their natural habitats, and some tour boats are even run by researchers who will tell you about the creatures’ migratory patterns and behavior. Make sure to call ahead because these tours can book up very quickly in the height of summer. Captain Johnny’s, Manteo • outerbankscruises.com

Roanoke Island Festival Park Sprawling over 25 acres in Manteo, this interactive historic site and music and arts venue is a unique attraction for visitors of all ages. The park is home to the Elizabeth II, a 16th century representative ship; exhibits such as the Coastal Algonquian Indian Town and the English Settlement Site; and the Roanoke Island Adventure Museum. Younger children will be delighted by the costumed interpreters and interactive components. A variety of performances are also held throughout the year at the Outdoor Pavilion, including concerts such as the Island Bluegrass Festival. 1 Festival Park, Manteo • roanokeisland.com

The Lost Colony America’s longest running outdoor drama, The Lost Colony is a musical performance about America’s first English colony and the mystery they left behind. Guests will experience exciting battles, Indian dances, the royal court, and the birth of the first English child born in the New World, Virginia Dare. More than 200 actors, technicians, and designers collaborate on this enormous production that has drawn guests since 1937. Written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paul Green, The Lost Colony portrays an important piece of America’s history and is a family friendly event not to be missed. 1409 National Park Dr, Manteo • thelostcolony.org

Summer allows for sightings of hydrangeas, crepe myrtles, coneflowers, and many more species of native plants, while the cooler months bring completely different varieties. Corolla Wild Horses The Corolla wild horses were some of the first settlers on the Outer Banks! Originally left behind by explorers nearly 500 years ago, these horses are of Spanish decent and were recently recognized as the state horse of North Carolina. Known for their hardiness, the horses have weathered centuries of storms and feed on the salty marsh grasses native to this area. Current herd size fluctuates between 120-150 individuals. They roam freely north of Corolla, in an area that is accessible only by 4WD. There are several tour companies that offer excursions in search of the horses, or if you have a suitable vehicle you can strike out on your own. Just remember that the horses are wild and very unpredictable. It is illegal to feed or come within 50 feet of the them, so be sure to bring a zoom lens! For more information: corollawildhorses.com

Doggone Vacation! The Outer Banks is about as dog-friendly as it gets! Our pups are big parts of our lives and you’re sure to encounter dogs just about everywhere you go. You’ll see doggie water dishes outside of stores and restaurants, dogs riding and walking with their people, and of course lots of four-legged fun on the beach. But there are a few things that you need to know if you’re going to be bringing your dog on vacation with you, and following these common-sense tips will ensure that your dog has as much fun on the Outer Banks as you do!

First, let’s break down leash laws by town: • • • • • •

Duck: No leash laws, but dogs must be supervised and under control at all times. Southern Shores: Year-round leash law and during the season, dogs can only be on the beach (leashed) before 9am and after 6pm. Kitty Hawk: In season, dogs are only allowed on the beach before 10am and after 6pm. Dogs must be on a leash but it can be removed if the dog won’t disturb other people. Kill Devil Hills: Year-round leash law, and dogs can’t be on the beach between the hours of 9am and 6pm, in season. Nags Head: Dogs can be on the beach any time, as long as they are leashed. Cape Hatteras: Dogs allowed on the beach at all time as long as they are leashed.

You can find more detailed information about regulations in each town by visiting their websites. Unless your dog has impeccable recall, it’s probably a wise idea to keep him leashed at all times. This is for his safety as well as the safety of other people and pets on the beach. Your dog is in a strange environment, with new sounds and smells, and may be more likely to run off or behave differently than he does at home. It’s great if your dog is friendly, but not every other dog on the beach plays well with others. Large, excited dogs can scare little kids and most people wouldn’t want a sandy, wet, slobbery pooch interrupting their beach nap! Just remember, if someone asks you to call your dog, yelling “he’s friendly!” while Rover happily ignores you won’t prevent a fight from happening or keep your 110 pound Goldendoodle from knocking over a toddler. Another thing to keep in mind: the beach is hot in the summer! In the middle of the day, the sand can reach temperatures of 120 degrees. If it hurts you to walk across it, it’s going to hurt your pooch too. A simple way to test the temperature of the ground is to place the back of your hand on the pavement/sidewalk/sand for five seconds. If it’s too hot to leave your hand there for the full five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog. Their paw pads can burn and blister, which could require an ER vet visit and result in a very miserable dog. 44

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

Story by MEG PUCKETT

Just like humans, dogs can get heatstroke. This can cause major organ damage and even death if not addressed quickly. Signs to look for are excessive panting and drooling, wobbly (drunk-looking, disoriented) movement, vomiting, and a rapid heart rate. Dehydration is also common in the summer, especially if your dog ingests too much salt water or sand. Be sure to keep cool, clean, fresh water readily available at all times. Overweight dogs, the very young and very old, breeds with long hair, and flat-faced breeds (like pugs and bulldogs) are at a higher risk of heat stroke.

Don’t assume your dog can swim! Even if they swim at home in the pool or lake, the ocean is a whole different ballgame. There are strong currents and the sandy bottom can drop off suddenly. Last but not least, pick up the poop! Dog poop is a huge pollutant and no, letting the ocean wash it away or covering it with sand does not count as picking it up. Many public beach accesses have stations with bags and trashcans and, word to the wise, most locals will call you out if they see you leaving the poop behind. Not only is it really unpleasant to step in, but pet waste is full of bacteria that can be harmful to both people and wildlife. The Outer Banks is a great place to visit with your four-legged pal! Miles of beaches, trails, walking paths, and parks make it simple and fun to get out and explore with your best friend. You’re likely to find a cafe or two that will welcome your pooch on their outdoor patio, and many of our shops even have souvenirs for Fido too. More and more of our rental homes and hotels are becoming pet friendly, making it easier than ever to bring them with you on vacation. There’s no reason to leave your dog at home anymore, and as long as you play it safe and remain respectful of our unique local environment, you’re both sure to have a tail waggin’ good time! Meg Puckett is a social media specialist, writer, and canine massage therapist who lives in Kill Devil Hills with her two goofy pit bulls, Ruca and Turtle.

Sun, sand, and surf - probably the top three reasons you’re on an Outer Banks vacation. But those are also the things that are most likely to put a cramp in your vacation fun if you don’t follow a few common sense safety tips.

Rip Currents

The U.S. Lifesaving Association reports 80 percent of all ocean rescues are related to rip currents. When you see lifeguards stroll along the shoreline first thing in the morning studying the surf, they’re looking for indicators of rip currents, which can materialize quickly on the Outer Banks. If you do feel yourself being pulled seaward, immediately tell yourself to stop fighting against the current. Then float to conserve energy and calm yourself. If you’re capable, swim parallel to shore until you’re out of the rip – typically about 20 to 40 yards. Rips are evident from their line of outgoing foam or sandy brown water.

Heat Exhaustion

According to the National Weather Service, rip currents are the No. 2 environmental cause of death in the U.S., with heat-related causes being No. 1. Heat exhaustion – dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, profuse sweating, nausea and/ or rapid heartbeat – is a serious condition that should not be ignored. If symptoms do not improve, the person should be examined by a health professional to make sure that heat stroke, which can be deadly, is not developing. Be sure to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

Hot sand

In the summertime, it’s estimated that sand temperatures can reach upwards of 120 degrees. Third degree burns occur when water temperatures approach 130 degrees, so you can only imagine what that hot sand is doing to the bottom of your feet, even if you sprint for the water. You won’t regret wearing shoes from the car to your perfect spot on the beach; it may be cool when you arrive in the morning, but by mid-day the sand will be scorching. Remember that kids are even more sensitive to the temperatures (water shoes are a great idea for the whole day!) and be careful with pets too. Consider leaving the pups at home during the heat of the day.

Sunburn

Unfortunately, sun-fried tourists are a common sight in the summer. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays, which increases your risk of a sunburn. Yes, you can burn even if you spend most of the day in the ocean! The sun is strongest between 10am - 2pm, so be sure you have shade available, especially for the little ones. Sunscreen is a must-have. Look for one that is water resistant (and remember to reapply!), protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and has an SPF of 30 or higher. A bad sunburn has the potential to ruin the rest of your vacation, not to mention the health risks that are associated with overexposure.

Some other things to remember while you’re visiting the Outer Banks: •

46

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

Pick up your belongings when you leave the beach for the day. Also be sure to fill in any holes you may have dug as they are dangerous to both wildlife and human beachgoers, especially at night. Take a designated trash bag with you and be sure to remove any litter when you go. Clean beaches are healthy beaches! Any pyrotechnic that leaves the ground is illegal in North Carolina. In Hatteras, Southern Shores, and the Town of Duck ALL fireworks are illegal. The end of a sparkler can reach 1200 degrees, so even the “safe” fireworks can cause a lot of damage if you’re not careful. Always point fireworks away from people and pets, houses and vegetation, have a bucket of water on hand, and be sure to clean up any trash left behind. It is illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of the Corolla wild horses. They are unpredictable and dangerous, and best viewed from afar. It is also illegal to feed the horses. Unnatural food items can harm or even kill the horses, and it makes them more likely to seek out humans for food. A good rule of thumb for all wildlife is to be respectful and keep your distance - Outer Banks ecology is fragile! Cyclists have the right of way on bike paths, but remember that everyone else may not be aware of or following the law. It’s always a good idea to stop at intersections, ride single-file, and wear a helmet (required by law for anyone under the age of 16) as well as reflective clothing. Stay safe and happy during your vacation by adhering to these simple tips. Most Outer Banks towns have websites outlining local rules and regulations, so if you’re in doubt - Google! And always err on the side of caution. Better safe than sorry!

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

The gentle roll of the waves, the sand warm from the summer sun, and the constant, soothing sounds of the sea‌ Most would agree that time spent at the beach is calming, even healing, so it should come as no surprise that the most sought after spa treatments on the Outer Banks are inspired by our coastal surroundings too.

F

rom stones and seashells borrowed from the ocean to algae masques, salt scrubs, and revitalizing massages on the waterfront, the opportunities for relaxation in Duck and Corolla are endless. Cleanse your body, mind, and spirit with an array of traditional and ocean-inspired body treatments, facials, and massages all while taking in the natural splendor of the Outer Banks. And truly, your Outer Banks vacation wouldn’t be complete without a spa visit! Those searching for waterfront respite should look no further than the award-winning Spa at Sanderling located in the town of Duck. The spa, which is open to the public, offers ten treatment rooms with views of the tranquil Currituck Sound and features many signature treatments that employ the unique natural resources of the Outer Banks. Among the signature treatments is the Ocean Serenity Ritual, a 70-minute experience which includes a massage in the hydrotherapy tub, a sea salt glow and moisturizing body wrap, facial massage and masque, scalp treatment, Scotch Hose massage, and rinse in the Vichy rain shower.

soul revival The Spa at Sanderling offers an array of massages such as the aromatherapy massage – try the jasmine and neroli! – and the warm bamboo massage, as well as body care, facials, nail and hair care, waxing, and bridal styling. (They will style grooms too.) From mid-May to mid-October, further your relaxation at Sanderling with a sunrise yoga class on the beach or a private yoga class in the spa. These island rituals will leave you feeling revitalized from the sun and ready to continue your Outer Banks vacation. With two locations in Corolla and Currituck, Eden Day Spa & Salon is convenient to all locals and visitors to the northern beaches. Since 1996, the cutting edge Aveda concept salon has specialized in hair and skin care with services including haircuts and color, bridal styling, facials, and body treatments such as the rosemary mint body wrap and the Caribbean therapy seaweed body wrap. The spa also offers nail care, waxing, makeup, and massages such as the Elemental Nature Massage with your favorite aromas and techniques tailored to your specific needs. For brides planning to wed on the Outer Banks, Eden Day Spa will come to you for spa services on the big day even if you are staying on the four-wheel drive beaches of Carova. Large groups (not just bridal parties) are always welcome at Eden too. The spa’s mission is to make you look and feel your best while indulging in total relaxation. Whether you are floating in the Atlantic or pampering yourself with a

deep tissue massage and brown sugar scrub, remember that relaxation is key while on the Outer Banks. Set some time aside for your own leisure and indulgence – you deserve it! Lexi Holian was born and raised in Duck. Though she may travel far and wide, she’ll always call the Outer Banks home and looks forward to the rejuvenation of body and soul that coming home always brings her.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC DAILY Take time to indulge in the relaxing and refreshing experience of the Spa at Sanderling. Give yourself a soothing and stimulating experience that will refresh you mentally while giving your body revitalizing pampering.

Story by LEXI HOLIAN

The wait is over. You’ve arrived on the Outer Banks for a long-overdue family vacation, and that pristine stretch of shoreline is just a stone’s throw away. You stop into the vacation rental ofice to collect your keys or perhaps simply to say hello now that the beach house offers keyless entry, and a lier on the counter catches your eye… There’s an oceanfront home for sale. Now is the time to turn to your family with a playful smile and say, “Hey, we should buy this!”

A

ccording to the professionals, it is not unusual for the buying process to start this way. Many vacation rental homeowners begin as renters themselves, most of whom have been coming to the Outer Banks for years and years. Abigail Hodgson, Marketing Coordinator at Corolla Classic Vacations, said, “You see a glimmer in their eyes. They think they’re joking at first, and then they realize that this is doable.” While some homeowners have purchased homes or built up right away upon discovering the Outer Banks, many families find that they are in the market for a beach house after visiting the Outer Banks so often that it has become like a second home to them. Children have grown up coming to the beach, and now they bring their kids or even grandkids to

spend a summer week on the oceanfront. In a way, buying a beach house just makes the most sense. “I think the American dream has shifted,” said Hodgson. “It’s gone from having your little plot of America to having memories and experiences, especially when you love a place like the Outer Banks so much. It’s a chance to lock in and keep those experiences.” It’s worth a look, even if your plans don’t come together in the end. Most realty companies have homebuyers’ get-togethers you can sit in on that are fairly casual. (At the Carolina Designs Realty homebuyers’ chat, flip flops are required.) And there’s also the option of looking into foreclosures. DUCKCOROLLAOBX.COM

Once you’ve actually purchased the home, a lot comes along with transitioning from part-time vacationer to full-time owner. You’ll likely have a lot of questions when it comes to the finer details of renting out your new home, and Outer Banks property managers are fully prepared to help. There’s a lot of work that goes into owning a vacation rental home, especially when you consider the sheer number of people that will pass through your beach house’s doors. Whether your home has four bedrooms or 12, the floors, surfaces, and appliances are going to experience some serious wear and tear, especially when you consider that those appliances aren’t commercial-grade. Items intended for single-family used in a multi-family vacation home every week back to back in the summertime will need replacing faster than the ones back at home. “Homeowners often don’t realize what they will have to put into their homes annually whether it’s replacing bedspreads or re-painting to keep renters coming,” said Hodgson. “They are surprised and sometimes discouraged when they discover that they have to spend that much money on details and replacements, but it makes all the difference.” The difference for guests and for homeowners, that is. Because one of the biggest perks of maintaining the beach house is clearly the extra time you and your family will be spending on the Outer Banks! Owners can choose which weeks they would like to stay in their home and which weeks they would like to keep it on the market for rentals. Generally, as long as they leave the weeks for renters that the rental income really depends on, then they have the flexibility to come whenever they would like, whether that be in mid-summer or over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays (or all of the above). Those key weeks for rentals can be determined by your realty company. Elaine Breiholz, Property Manager at Carolina Designs Realty, said, “Most companies give the owners rental projections each year so they are aware of the rental income they should be seeing based on that house’s performance in the past or comparable homes in the program.” Speaking of the services offered by realty companies, it’s common for new vacation rental homeowners to explore the different property management services, sometimes trying out two or three companies during the first few years before finding that perfect fit. But, of course, a perfect fit the first time around would be ideal. Some area realty companies manage upwards of 500 homes, while others prefer to keep it small, and management styles and services can vary so it’s important to find the one that works for you. Brindley Beach manages an array of homes from Corolla to Nags Head that include everything from traditional beach cottages and condos to luxurious ocean 68

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

and soundfront estates. They even offer homes in the 4-wheel drive beaches of Corova, where visitors may see the wild horses roaming. Their sales team handles homes from Corolla to Nags Head, as well as on the nearby mainland. Carolina Designs Realty offers an impressive selection of upscale homes from Corolla to Nags Head that range in size from four to 22 bedrooms. The homes feature innovative designs and amenities including the new keyless entry locks. Carolina Designs also has a dedicated sales team, so you can start searching for that vacation rental or second home on the Outer Banks today. Corolla Classic Vacations maintains around 250 vacation rental homes and prides themselves in being deliberately and selectively smaller. The homes are all located in Corolla. Under the same roof, the property manager’s sister company, Corolla Real Estate, handles sales not only in Corolla but south all the way through Nags Head. Most realty companies will connect their homeowners with each other too with a special homeowners’ party or a weekend of thanks. Owners who have four or five homes or those who have been renting their homes out for years can share experiences and ideas with new homeowners. “They end up being friends,” said Hodgson. “Sometimes they end up booking the same weeks to come down to vacation. It’s like a little family.” While you’re speaking with fellow homeowners, a few of them may mention their plans of eventually moving permanently into the beach house. The Outer Banks sounds like a great place to retire, doesn’t it? Lexi Holian was born and raised on the Outer Banks and cannot remember a time when she wasn’t writing. She can often be found planning her next trip abroad but will always find her greatest inspiration on the shores of the Outer Banks.

Books FILL YOUR BEACH BAG to

It’s time again to shed the stress of the everyday and kick back on the beach with your feet sunk deep in the cool grains of sand, book in hand. By MEAGHAN BEASLEY

Affectionately referred to as the “Beach Road,” North Carolina Highway 12 stretches the entire length of the Outer Banks from Northern Corolla to the southern tip of Ocracoke, and residents have relied on it as a means of moving across and among the various barrier islands that make up the area. With an eye to detail combined with the stories of locals who watched it come to life, Dawson Carr paints a scenic history of our beloved road in NC 12: Gateway to the Outer Banks. In his delightful new book, Carr offers a unique take on Outer Banks history by examining “how NC 12 came into being, what effects it has had, how it has endured, and what the future might hold, not only for the road but for the region it traverses.” 70

DUCK, COROLLA & THE OUTER BANKS

Yes, you are on vacation and all anyone wants to do is play! But what if you could sneak some learning into all those hours spent on the beach? Check out Lessons from the Sand: Family-Friendly Science Activities You Can Do on a Carolina Beach by Charles O. Pilkey and Orrin H. Pilkey. Meant to endear children to the fascinating elements that make up every aspect of the shore, the father/son author team offer up knowledge for children ages five to one hundred through illustrations, explanations, and suggested activities. Every question a child could have about the beach is covered, from sand to shorelines, shells to waves; there are even chapters for rainy day and night time exploring. Lessons from the Sand is a wonderful opportunity to learn and experience our beaches with your children.

In a rich story of mystery and suspense, Philip Gerard melds the Outer Banks’ history of World War II with the contentious modern issue of off-shore drilling in his latest novel The Dark of the Island. Nick Wolf takes a job off Cape Hatteras to assist with exploratory oil drilling, the same place his grandfather was reported killed in WWII by a German U-Boat. While there, Wolf encounters locals determined to way-lay the oil company’s efforts by claiming there’s no oil to be found; but unusual behavior raises Wolf’s suspicions that residents are hiding something which has lain hidden for decades. A fast-paced thriller with the heart of a novel, The Dark of the Island is perfect for whiling away the hours with periodic breaks to contemplate the pristine ocean horizon.

YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD BOOKSTORE

Fans of David Payne will delight in the arrival of a new male voice in the local fiction genre. Author Charlie Ball spent many years along the Outer Banks’ beaches as a lifeguard – and he translates that experience into a new novel, Red Flags: An Outer Banks Story. Through the character of Wesley Brooks, an eighteen-year-old visiting the Outer Banks of 1993, Ball weaves an engaging story about what it means to sit on that high wooden stand all day, watching out for the safety of hundreds of people, as well as the intense camaraderie and trust that develops amongst those who choose to serve as beach lifeguards.

A new year would not be complete without the arrival of another Suzanne Tate and James Melvin installment in their famed Outer Banks Nature Series. Speedy Ghost Crab is a natural addition to the series and one we’ve all longed for. No one can experience a trip to the beach without feeling eyes peeping out at them from a sandy hole or a walk in the moonlight that didn’t involve the fear of stepping on one of those elusive sandy creatures. With her usual clear prose and incisive wit, Tate’s tale of Speedy Ghost Crab informs children (and adults) about the creature’s homes, food sources, and their natural predators. Meaghan Beasley has been lucky enough to be a bookseller at The Island Bookstore for over twelve years (and counting).
