Marriage License REQUIREMENTS FOR OUTER BANKS WEDDINGS

gingeRSnAPSPHOTOS.COM

By SUSAN SELIG CLASSEN

Recent upgrades at local county Register of Deeds offices have made it even easier to get your marriage license for your Outer Banks wedding. A dedicated page on Dare County’s website called the “Marriage Kiosk” will allow couples to fill out their paperwork before they ever visit the county office. In Currituck County, that expedited process is available by clicking on the link to a “Worksheet for Preparation of Marriage License.” All three local counties have made it easy to avoid the common mistake of showing up at the Register of Deeds office without the correct paperwork with online checklists to help you prepare for obtaining your marriage license. Following are some frequently asked questions for getting a marriage license in Dare, Currituck, and Hyde counties.

WHO NEEDS TO GO? Both of you must appear in person to apply for a North Carolina wedding license.

WHEN SHOULD WE GET THE LICENSE? There is no waiting period, so you may use the license from the moment it is issued. However, marriage licenses are valid for only 60 days after they are issued.

WHERE DO WE GET A LICENSE? you can get your license in any county in the state of North Carolina, and you may use that license to get married anywhere in the state. While any county in the state can grant you a marriage license to be used for your beach wedding on the Outer Banks, be aware that each office may differ in their document requirements. Couples who decide to utilize a county office other than Dare, Currituck, or Hyde should contact them directly for information specific for that office. SAME-SEX MARRIAGE UPDATE:

Since the Supreme Court ruling in the fall of 2014 made same-sex marriages legal in North Carolina, local registrars have reported smooth processing of same-sex marriage applications.

OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM

| 7

If you are in a hurry, it is wise to avoid Dare County’s busiest days and times, which are any weekdays between noon and 2 pm, and Mondays. The Hyde County Register of Deeds in Swan Quarter is open weekdays, 8 am - 5 pm.

DO WE NEED A PHYSICAL OR A BLOOD TEST? No. dAnieL PuLLen PHOTOgRAPHY

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The fee for the marriage license is $60 for Dare, Currituck, and Hyde Counties. They accept cash, checks, or money orders in Dare and Currituck Counties; cash only in Hyde County.

THE DAY OF THE WEDDING? There must be two witnesses to any ceremony – whether it is civil or religious. One job of your minister, magistrate, or officiant is to sign your marriage license and return it to the county office in which you were married within 10 days after the marriage ceremony. AFTER THE WEDDING? Marriage certificates are not automatically mailed out to newly married couples; they have to be requested from the same county where the couple was married. To get a copy of your marriage certificate, download the request form that is available on each county’s website and follow those mailing instructions.

Please contact the town in which your ceremony will be held regarding any additional permits or restrictions. ♥ ARTZ MuSiC & PHOTOgRAPHY

Town of Duck 252-255-1234

Town of Nags Head 252-441-5508

If you are going to use any of the local offices you may want to read ahead:

Town of Southern Shores 252-261-2394

Town of Manteo 252-473-2133

WHAT DO WE NEED TO BRING?

Town of Kitty Hawk 252-261-3552

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area 252-473-2111

For Dare County (Manteo office): • A valid government picture ID that includes your date of birth.

Town of Kill Devil Hills 252-449-5300

• Social security card or any other official paperwork with your social security number listed, such as a W2 form or old pay stub. • Divorce decree with judge’s signature if your divorce was less than a year ago. If your divorce was more than a year ago, you just need to be able to list the date of the divorce on your application. • If either of you are under 21, you will need a certified birth certificate. Those under age 18 will need more affidavits and should consult the website or Register of Deeds office directly, prior to going.

For Currituck County (Currituck office): • A valid government picture ID that includes your date of birth. • you will be asked to provide your social security numbers and the dates of previous marriages or divorces, but you do not need to provide official documentation. • If either the bride or groom is under age 21, more documentation will be required; that list can be found on Currituck County’s website. Be aware that you both will be sworn in under oath at the conclusion of the application process to testify that information given is accurate.

DO WE NEED AN APPOINTMENT AT CURRITUCK, HYDE, OR DARE COUNTY REGISTER OF DEEDS OFFICE? no appointment is necessary. The Currituck office issues marriage licenses from 8 am – 4 pm, Monday through Friday. They are located on the mainland portion of Currituck County; there are no satellite offices in Corolla. The Dare County Register of Deeds office is open weekdays from 8:30 am – 5 pm, but applicants should arrive no later than 4:30 pm.

WHERE TO GET YOUR LICENSE To be married on North Carolina’s Outer Banks you must obtain a marriage license at any Register of Deeds office in the state of North Carolina. Outer Banks locations include:

f all the preparation that goes into a wedding ceremony, writing the vows is one of the most personal and heartfelt of the tasks. Expressing a couple’s emotional connection can intimidate even professional writers. But the creative process will be less daunting if it is broken down into steps. Thinking through your end goal makes things much more manageable, productive, and hopefully, inspirational. Ask your minister or wedding officiant for guidance about the sentiment and length of your vows. The professionals have seen many ceremonies and will be able to help you set the tone you want. Start with practical matters: Should you write your vows together, or separately, or combined in some matter? Think about what brought you together and kept you there. Think about what makes your partner so special and so beloved. Think about how precious your commitment is to each other, and what you want to share in your marriage and give to your partner. Obviously, your vows should reflect the individual desires and skills of the bride and groom, but by definition the vows speak of the oneness of the couple, and the mutual aspirations for their future together. Promises made must be mutual, heartfelt, and genuine. Vows are as unique as the brides and grooms who are combining their lives to become a couple. They can be written as essays, poems, love letters, stories, or a combination of styles. In preparation, the couple should look for inspiration in nature, family, religion, literature, history, and/or their own lives. Read vows written by other couples you admire. favorite songwriter or musician. Do not forget to include touching on quirks that you gently tease each other about or silly jokes you never fail to share a laugh over. Include the way you treasure how your beloved makes you feel. Remember your gratitude in your fateful meeting. If there is a perfect anecdote that illustrates why you adore your partner, that is golden material. Give yourself plenty of quiet time to compose and review. If possible, read them out loud to a family member or a friend. Make sure you start writing well in advance before the wedding, and speak to your minister or officiant about your plans. While it’s easy to find standard and traditional vows, many will choose add sentiments that speak from the heart. It’s a personal choice. Some people fear public speaking and have enough trouble saying “I do” out loud and have no interest in composing and reading their own vows; it’s too emotional, it’s too difficult. Writing about your most tender feelings for someone is hard enough. Reading it in front of other people understandably can be intimidating. Some ministers or officiants will weave your personal stories into the wedding script. On the other hand, many couples welcome the opportunity to craft a unique expression of their love. Even if it is a little scary, writing your own vows can be a symbolic and meaningful exercise for a couple entering into a shared new life together. ♥

If you ask a wedding planner what wedding guests remember most, many will agree that

here’s nothing quite like a wedding on the beach, and if you’ve made the decision to say your “I do’s” on our shores, you are about to find out just how many perks come along with an Outer Banks wedding. While the peaceful, romantic backdrop of the beach is compliments of Mother Nature herself, what is served to eat and drink is up to you. If you ask a wedding planner what wedding guests remember most, many will agree that catering and food are talked about long after the day is over. Food and drink are the foundations of entertaining and conviviality, so your wedding should reflect what you find entertaining and hospitable. No matter if it will be a wild shindig or a calm, elegant affair, your reception is a celebration to share with your friends and family. Take some of these tips and 2015 catering trends into consideration and get started.

2015 WEDDING GUIDE to the outer Banks

The Perfect Location... SARAHKEENANCREATIvE.COM

First Things First: Know Your Budget Identifying your budget is the first step. If you have opted for a full service wedding planner, he or she will now step in to help you throughout the entire catering decision-making process. However, if you are doing it yourself or only using the services of a day-of wedding coordinator, (see more about wedding planners on pg.40), grab your groom, your maid of honor, your mom, and anyone else to act as a second opinion and set out to explore your catering options. As you begin, keep in mind that while catering is one of the biggest expenses of a wedding, that does not mean that you have to break the bank to have the reception of your dreams. Local, professional caterers have the creativity and flexibility to make any budget fit.

What to Look For in a Caterer

...for Your Special Event Our Private Room is a special location for your rehearsal dinner, brunch or intimate wedding reception. For larger events, the main dining room or the entire restaurant are available. Or, for more casual settings or meet and greets, our front deck and bar would be the perfect location. A good caterer pays close attention to details, not only to the details that need to be implemented on wedding day, but also the details that come long before. A good caterer will also expertly guide you through food and beverage choices without being pushy, dismissive, or hard to work with. Local chefs will know what foods and desserts will transport best to your wedding location and what seafood and produce are freshest for your reception day. Your caterer should be experienced enough to confidently, yet unobtrusively, guide you. Do not agree to an appetizer platter that sounds unappealing to you. Those stinky, little goat cheese fritters piled high on your appetizer table may prove your initial reluctance to order them was correct. Whether you are building your menu from the ground up together or you are giving the caterers the space to create a menu on your behalf, make sure they are clear on your budget. Consider the Season Another factor that affects much of your catering decisions is the time of year in which you plan to get married. Will your reception be held outside or inside, early in the evening before sunset, or in the warmer months when the sun is still shining at 7 pm? You would not serve pumpkin brûleé mocktails in the summer, nor would it be a good idea to have frozen piña coladas for a winter wedding reception. If you are staging a chocolate fountain dessert table in the winter months, research which fruits are grown locally during your wedding season. A side benefit of being eco-conscious and using seasonal foods for your wedding menu? It will be fresher and tastier. Your caterer will help you discover the best food and drink choices to complement your event.

2015 WEDDING GUIDE to the outer Banks

exquisite. unique. unforgettable SARAHKEENANCREATIvE.COM

Establish Your Venue

BLACK PELICAN CATERING COMPANY The Outer Banks’ premier resource for your wedding and special event catering. Whether you are planning a wedding, a company picnic, private party or personal chef services, a special event requires special attention. Every menu is individually designed, elegantly presented and professionally served. Our staff of qualified coordinators and chefs will make sure your event runs smoothly from start to finish. We’ll guide you through the planning process and customize a menu to accommodate most any budget.

Once your season and budget have been determined, deciding on your venue may determine who you use as a caterer. Getting married at a pier, golf course, aquarium, or other venue that packages in-house catering service is a popular way to make a catering selection simpler. If you love the setting but would prefer a different caterer, find out if they allow outside vendors. Going with a venue that is a “one-stop-shop” has its perks as there is less to coordinate and package deals can be more affordable. Be sure to check out online testimonials of your catering service and venue, if available, before making your final decision. You can learn a lot by what past brides have to say about their experiences. Do a little digging and ask around the area to be sure you are getting an accurate depiction of the company’s reputation and performance. Some venues, especially those offering in-house catering services, also supply what is called “day-of coordination” packages. Typically, this includes a briefing for the bride, coordination between the vendors, distribution of the wedding day timeline to appropriate service providers, and some other set up and break down duties that are typically handled by a wedding planner.

Choose Your Style Couples are expanding on the traditional sit-down dinners that are available and are becoming edible innovators with fun and spirited nuptial fare. Offering hands-on, interactive serving situations, like food trucks, mix-your-own ingredient stations, beverage bars, and casually passed, easy-to-eat food options, couples in 2015 are transforming the previously known cocktail and dinner hour separation into one extended, casual socializing event. Food Trucks Rolling onto the scene last year with immediate popularity, was the food truck – a fan-favorite. After a recent popularity spike, attributed partly to reality TV shows and food truck festivals popping up all over the country, the wedding food truck is a sought-after reception feature in 2015. Eclectic and versatile, food trucks bring a sense of whimsical nostalgia to the table, as they are reminiscent of carnivals, festivals, and good times past. Surprise your guests with a grand entrance of the food truck for an extra kick of entertainment. What are the benefits of a food truck? There’s no hassle, no clean-up, and the food truck provides you with an excuse for a very simple menu item. While food trucks will not work for your entire food service especially if you have a large guest list, they are perfect for serving that signature appetizer, small snacks, beverages, milkshakes, or even cotton candy in your

wedding colors. Dishes like tacos or crêpes or à la carte items are easy to distribute quickly so you can get your guests to the truck, served, and on their way. Experts suggest having one food truck for every 75 guests to keep the flow of service at an unnoticeable pace. Also, check with your wedding venue for required permits and zoning restrictions for food vendors.

Late-Night Snacks Late-night snacks like pizza, popcorn, ice cream, or milk and cookies – any of those simple favorites that motivate you to get up from the couch for a snack while watching a movie at home – are trending this year. Appearing after dinner and wedding cake, the late-night snack will be a pleasant surprise to the friends and family who have the staying power to celebrate into the late-night hours. Not that eating healthy is a new concept, but increased awareness about buying and eating local has hit the mainstream. Even if you are from out of town, staying true to the barrier island’s local roots will allow you to serve the freshest ingredients possible at your wedding while melding a piece of the Outer Banks into your wedding day memories with each and every bite. Bring the farm to the table with gourmet twists on homemade brews, farm-fresh cheeses, or local seafood. Crossover into the veggie buffet trend and serve up local pickings with home style and seasonally inspired dips. Or try a new twist on the classic pickle tray with a homemade pickle bar featuring locally-grown cucumbers, marinated in different spices and herbs, as well as fiery hot, pickled okra and sweet pickled beets for an authentically southern, fresh, and impressive food station. Wedding guests who have travelled to the Outer Banks will, no doubt, expect to sample famous eastern North Carolina barbeque at some point during their travels. Why not include it for one of your wedding events? The local version is vinegar-based and very different than what folks expect to eat anywhere west of our region.

Who doesn’t like a trip down memory lane to a happy childhood moment? Tap into that playful wistfulness and serve a culinary spin on the old-school push pops. Push pops have been reincarnated in 2015 as cheesecake, moon pie, and macaroon pops, to name just a few. These tasty treats will have guests chatting and reminiscing in no time. Regardless of what is in or out, trending or trite, the bottom line is to go with your instinct. Follow these wedding trends or come up with something completely new. There is no need to classify your catering style into a foodie, hipster, classic, trendy, or elegant genre, because if you want, it can be a little of all of those labels rolled into one. Just pick what makes you happy and excited, and plan for what will create the least amount of stress on your special day. And remember, another great part about having the wedding on the Outer Banks is that your guests will feel like they are always on vacation, and who can be upset while eating well at the beach?

2015 Catering Trends Late-Night Snacks A second food service is great for evening weddings and after parties when you want your guests to be able to refuel and head back to the dance floor.

Interactive Eating Instead of having the traditional cocktail server walking around with trays of prepared food and drink, a hot new trend this year is an interactive approach. Guests walk up to an oyster bar or guacamole bar and watch the chef shuck and muddle their appetizer right before their eyes.

The Unexpected Beverage Stations Everyone’s heard of a signature cocktail; others are choosing specialty teas, espressos, fresh-squeezed limeades, or fruit and herb-infused waters.

Comfort Food All Dressed-Up Food is both presentation and taste, so combine the two to present some of your favorite simple foods in extraordinary ways. Think meatloaf and mac and cheese served in their own ramekins.

Rustic Fare Served family-style on buffet tables, the rustic wedding is still going strong and is a popular trend among laid-back couples.

Go Ingredient Crazy Offer your own fusti bar with a variety of herbinfused olive oils and present with bread and balsamic vinegar.

Veggie Buffets Display a colorful table of fresh veggies with specialty herb dips for an inexpensive and healthy way to nourish your guests.

Mini Everything They don’t call it fun-size for nothing. Pair with mini beverages. ♥

2015 WEDDING GUIDE to the outer Banks

The Big Bar Questions MICheLLe WaGner

Bridal Luncheons • Rehearsal Dinners Bachelor & Bachelorette Dinners • Receptions Onsite catering and personalized menus to accommodate all budgets and guests of all ages.

Answered

Your wedding reception should undoubtedly be the party of your dreams, so details are important. the question of how to handle the bar tab can be one of the most overwhelming choices to make during the planning process. But it doesn’t have to be. Whether you have a bar budget that allows for a never-ending flow of drinks for your guests or just a few memorable signature cocktails, it is important to pay attention to detail as you plan for the big party that is your reception. there are plenty of questions to answer before the drinks start pouring. Industry statistics reveal that couples spend an average of $2,800 on alcohol or approximately $16.50 per guest. It is worth looking at areas where you can be creative without sacrificing fun at the reception. online alcohol calculators can help you estimate how many bottles to purchase to avoid waste. You can plan a drink menu that is right for you by being creative with what you order. here are a few options to find the best bar for your budget:

Open Bar an open bar is a very generous offering but can end up being very costly. Be prepared. It allows guests to order any drink available and as many as they want. While it may be popular among CARRIE ROEN PHOTOGRAPHY

guests and caterers, one shortcoming is that it promotes a lot of waste as guests sample drinks they normally would not order - or they lose track of the drinks they have knowing that they can just order another one. With an open bar, there is no telling what the tab will be when the reception ends, so if you are on board with that concept, let the party begin. But keep in mind an open bar can easily account for 10 to 20 percent of your reception expense. one way to still have an open bar but save on expense is to offer just a set selection of drinks – such as just wine and beer. or perhaps only offer one signature, mixed drink. Couples have the option of setting time limits on when the bar is open, which can go a long way in keeping you within your budget. hiring waiters to bring drinks around or limiting serving times around a specific cocktail hour before dinner can also help to keep the budget manageable.

TIP: don’t serve drinks in large glasses. smaller portions usually mean less consumption. as a general rule, people tend to count the number of trips they make to the bar, not the ounces consumed. so with smaller glassware, your guests will be happy while you save on your bar bill.

DIY Bar If you are going with a Do-It-Yourself bar, the general rule of thumb for every 100 guests is: two cases of beer, three cases of wine and a case and a half of champagne. two fifths of popular liquors such as vodka, scotch, bourbon, whiskey, and rum are usually enough.

252.261.7325 icingonthecakes.com

Cash Bar one option to consider is a cash bar, which is a less popular choice for guests but can save the wedding couple a lot of money. TIP: start the party early. By simply switching your wedding and reception to earlier in the day, you can reduce alcohol consumption and spending greatly. Brunch weddings are becoming more popular, not only for the menu variety but also because they allow you to serve less expensive Bloody marys and mimosas.

Bring Your Own one way to pare down your bar bill is to find a venue where catering and alcohol are not bundled in with your contract so you can provide your own alcohol. this arrangement will also allow you to taste the fare from the outer Banks’ unique breweries and wineries. Many of these places offer discounts when buying in bulk, so be sure to shop around.

Skip the Bar of course, if your families do not drink alcohol, there is the option of skipping the bar altogether.

regardless of how you decide to serve alcohol, fun, nonalcoholic drinks should be available for the under-21 crowd, designated drivers, and other guests who do not drink.

Cocktail Hour and Signature Drinks some couples choose to limit the cocktail hour to 45 minutes rather than the entire reception. Wedding experts estimate that most of the drinks at a wedding are consumed in the first two hours, so limiting the cocktail hour can help trim your budget. also, couples often find that guests switch to wine with dinner, leaving the more expensive mixed drinks behind. always consider using bar brands instead of top shelf liquor. If you have a large number of beer drinkers on your guest list, consider the cheaper option of kegs instead of bottles. kegs can be hidden discretely behind the bar. TIP: Plan your cocktails based on the season. Having a winter wedding? manhattans and martinis are a must. serve up shandies and Pimm’s cups in the summer or gin and tonics for spring weddings. if your guest list is small enough, you could survey your friends and family to find out what their favorite drinks are and offer a small selection of those libations.

Follow the Rules

Professional caterers and restaurants hosting weddings need to have a permit to sell and/or serve alcohol at your wedding, but it is up to you to make sure that part of the process is legally covered. some reception sites require that you purchase your own permit to serve alcohol at their venue; other venues will automatically take care of the permit and pass that expense on to you. If you are providing your own alcohol and purchasing large quantities at an aBC store, the aBC store will issue a purchase/transportation permit at no charge that allows you to purchase and transport the larger amounts of liquor from the store to your site. to acquire a permit or obtain more information, call the state aBC Commission at (919) 779-0700.

If you are concerned about guests having too much to drink and getting into an accident, consider adding a liquor liability endorsement to your wedding insurance policy. ♥

Go Ahead.

HAVE YOUR CAKE... BY aBBY steWart

W

edding cake trends for 2015 show couples are choosing from a wide array of confection selections: from one-tiered, unfrosted cakes to towers of frosted gold and sequins – and a lot in between. the decision is all yours, and we know it’s a big one. that’s why we’re here to help. take a deep breath and have fun with your selection, because one thing is for certain: your cake represents your own style, and with that you can’t go wrong.

Know Your Limits Determining the boundaries you have for your cake is the first step. Your budget and your venue are going to be key factors when deciding where to begin. Discuss your budget with local wedding cake professionals and ask for photos of their previous creations. show photos of your gown, decorations, venue and anything else to illustrate a better idea of who you are and the atmosphere where your cake will be the centerpiece. Your venue will also determine some of your cake decisions. If your reception is on the beach during the summer, you will most likely stay away from buttercream, whipped cream, and meringue, as they will create a runny mess. Fondant-covered cakes with-

stand higher temperatures and maintain their shape and appearance from the first slice to the last bite. Many people prefer the sweet taste of buttercream to fondant, but the choice is yours. If you decide on fondant, discuss with your baker ways to make it as thin as possible while keeping the same results, and opt for a buttercream filling for best taste.

lori douglaS PhotograPhy

What’s Your Flavor? now this is where it starts to get good. over the past few years, offering a different, yet one-dimensional flavor for each tier of the cake was a crowd-pleaser, but in 2015, one luscious, exotic flavor combination for the entire cake is making waves with the wedding crowds. use this tasty trend to celebrate your roots, your foodie flare, or the “heritage” of your hometown with flavors reminiscent of places and times and people and memories. are you a southern girl at heart? red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting invokes nothing short of a scene straight out of Steel Magnolias. Did you and your fiancé get engaged in the islands over pina coladas? Choose a coconut cake with a key lime buttercream filling and smile at each other upon first bite, remembering that special night that led you to this memorable day. Innovative concoctions like this will have everyone guessing and discussing the flavors as if they were food connoisseurs themselves, and then ooh-ing and ahh-ing when you explain the heartwarming reason behind your flavor decision.

Go Naked one of the most popular trends for 2015 is the ‘naked,’ or unfrosted, cake. Vibrant frosting colors of 2014 are giving way this year to naked layers of contrasting cake and filling colors such as vanilla cake with passion fruit buttercream, or chocolate cake with white chocolate mousse icing for a minimalist, modern twist on the traditional cake. the naked look complements bohemian-chic style wedding themes, which are very popular. Pair the look with edible flowers or colorful, fresh fruits for a

romantic touch, or drizzle with a decadent topping, like warm caramel, for a mouthwatering flavor showcase for all of your guests to experience. Looking for another way to make a subtle statement? Varying textures or muted colors within the same palette will appear bold and elegant at the same time.

gingerSnaPSPhotoS.CoM

Layers upon Layers Whether you want a dramatic masterpiece of varying shapes or you prefer a simple one-tier design, options abound this year. one-tier wedding cakes are entering the scene as a popular look for low-key, outdoorsy couples. often decorated in rustic, unfinished ways, one-tiered cakes contain many layers, enough to feed guests at a small wedding, and can help keep your budget at single-level too. these sweet and simple stacks are perfect for brides who have chosen a more pragmatic approach, and the “less is more” take on the cake can be a simple work of absolute beauty. on the other end of the confectioner’s spectrum, big cakes still reign supreme. Multi-layer statement piece cakes in four, five and six-tiers can be matched to whatever personality or theme you choose. these fit-for-royalty comeback cakes are standing out in metallic buttercreams, ruffles, sequins and lace. also popular in 2015 are varying cake shapes, stacked within tiers of alternating square, round, and you-name-it cakes.

Hand-Painted Cakes

Delicate hand-painted floral patterns crafted upon sleek fondant create an antique sense of whimsy this year. there is no need for adornments with this edible piece of art. another popular trend for couples to display their personal style through hand-painted work is reminiscent of a groom’s cake. Intricate artistic creations, hobbies, favorite literary or hollywood characters and scenes can create a sweet, fun-loving cake to represent the couple’s convivial attitude.

The Wedding Cake That Isn’t a Cake When is a wedding cake not a wedding cake? When it is a platter of donuts, of course. Personalize a tier of multi-flavored wedding cupcakes instead of offering one single cake and flavor. or consider a table full of pies or individual tarts to highlight the freshest nuts and fruits during your wedding season.

To Top or Not to Top…That is the Question opt out of a cake topper this year and choose a sophisticated design or decoration situated along the tiers instead. Many couples are choosing a polished look with a smooth top rather than selecting a cake topper. tiers featuring cascading flowers, either sugar or fresh and edible, are prominent. remember, if you are using fresh blooms, double check with your florist to ensure that the flowers have not been sprayed with pesticides and are truly edible. If you are building the cake of your dreams on a budget, substituting fresh berries will add color and flare to your cake. Baroque metallic adornments or hints of lace that are reminiscent of this year’s wedding gown trends also make for stunning accent pieces for cakes that are bold enough to stand without a topper. still like the idea of situating something atop your reception confection? have your cake and eat it too. Written inspirations like, “the best is yet to come,” “happily ever after,” and “always & Forever,” in metallic cursive or bamboo lettering can add an elegant finish to your cake while avoiding the traditional figurine topper.

And for the Grand Finale… skip the sweets bar and dessert table this year and do like many other 2015 brides are doing… serve your cake as the dessert. Previously, weddings have displayed sweets tables, decadent cake pops, color-coded candies, and cupcake tiers, among other treats. Many beach brides will opt for a simpler approach and serve the wedding cake as the meal’s grand finale. 2015 introduces nouveau, flashy flavor combinations, bold ornamentation, subtle yet gorgeous simplicity, and non-traditional decoration and arrangement ideas. these choices leave couples with fun, new ideas to try this year; but as classic trends are making a comeback, a more traditional approach, like a white on white, three-tier display, produces a classic elegance that will endure the test of time and in your photographs for years to come. While guests might not be able to recall the centerpieces you so painstakingly chose for your tables (or the inebriated speech your best man made), they will not soon forget two things: the heartstopping sight of you entering the ceremony, and the look and taste of the confection you chose as the sweet centerpiece of your nuptials. so make it memorable; make it count for something, but most importantly…make it all yours. ♥

forgotten. You also need to factor the cost of transportation into your overall wedding budget. When booking your wedding wheels – the earlier the better!

Transportation Consider hiring transportation for these events:

Matt luSK PhotograPhy

There are many ways to get the bride and groom to and from the wedding events in absolute style. From a stretch SUV to an old-fashioned trolley, options exist to suit your style and needs. Keep safety and efficiency in mind as you also consider how to cart your guests to and fro!

Designated Drivers The biggest reason to consider wedding transportation for your guests is the obvious: drinking and driving. You want your guests to have fun at your reception, but you also want them to arrive at their destinations safely. The legal blood-alcohol limit in North Carolina is .08. That’s just one or two drinks for most people. Plus, how well do all of your guests know the directions to all of your destination wedding venues? Another reason to transport your guests is that parking at rental homes on the Outer Banks is very limited. A typical formula for non-event homes is one parking space per bedroom in the home. Also, parking on the grass can be a costly violation at most homes because of damage to underground septic systems. By providing transportation for guests, you can rest assured that everyone will get to the church (or beach) on time. Remember this tip: Do not wait until the last minute to book wedding transportation. It could cause unnecessary stress and result in confusion and last-minute details to be

Getting the Groom Involved: BY LeXI hoLIan

A How-To Guide

Grooms have already asked the most important question – will you marry me? But now that the wedding planning has begun, they wonder how much involvement they should have when it comes to the everyday decision making for the wedding. When a bride has every detail carefully laid out on her Pinterest dream board, what is left for a groom to do? the key to getting both people involved, especially those who just are not into wedding planning, is to focus on interests. If a groom is all about cocktails, why not take charge of creating an inventive drink menu? he could even host tastings with his groomsmen. If he is good with his hands, he could construct an arbor for the ceremony. a groom who is a stickler for bargains could be in charge of working out pricing with vendors and negotiating add-ons. Maybe his special talent is brewing beer – some home brew now becomes the favor going home with the guests. the groom should take responsibility for selecting the guests from his extended family and circle of friends. he should also be the one who selects the grooms’ gifts that are testaments to their friendships or familial bonds. Genuine gifts will come from him, because he knows his entourage better than his female counterpart. an ideal project for the groom is planning the after-party. he can select the local bar or restaurant and then organize music, transportation, and reserved seating, if necessary. then there are several tasks that require input from both bride and groom. the honeymoon research is one of the most fun parts of the planning process, and it should be a trip that the bride and groom map out together. although the wedding day is often referred to as “the bride’s day,” the honeymoon is an intimate escape that is special for both partners. Whether a groom considers himself to be a southern gentleman or not, why not borrow a southern tradition that reflects your destination wedding? here, a groom will have a gift – perhaps a piece of jewelry or small family heirloom – and love note delivered to his bride-to-be on the morning of the wedding. such thoughtful and romantic motions will intensify the excitement before the ceremony and abate any last minute apprehensions. ♥

Wedsite

licking through Pinterest boards, uploading photos, and changing statuses – the wedding planning process for today’s bride is largely centered on technology. What better way to connect with your wedding party, vendors, and guests than via a single, accessible source of information: your very own wedding website! The wedding website, nicknamed “wedsite,” fulfills both the need to communicate information to your guests and your desire to share your pre-marital bliss. It is also where you can post all of those gorgeous engagement photos that did not make the cut for the wedding invitation, allowing the latter to be kept short and sweet. Rather than folded photocopies stuffed into those envelopes, a wedsite is an all-inclusive, go-to place where invitees can find relevant wedding and reception information. Some websites coordinate your site design with the colors and theme of your invitation. There are an incredible variety of website-building tools that range from simple ‘where’ and ‘when’ information to a fully customizable site with introductions to the entire wedding party, photo galleries, multiple event RSVPs, and the song of your choice playing in the background. You can create your own free site, utilize the advanced features of a paid site, or hire a professional web designer. Free website builders will generally cover the basics like ceremony and reception date, time, and location; the option to RSVP online; and a chance to read the couple’s engagement story and their gratitude for guests’ participation in their special day.
