Marriage License REQUIREMENTS
id you know that couples applying for a marriage license on the Outer Banks may fall under the jurisdiction of three different North Carolina counties? Also, the national seashores, public beaches, and lighthouses each have different regulations regarding outdoor ceremonies. Read ahead to make sure all the paperwork is in order for your big day. Following are some frequently asked questions for getting a marriage license in Dare, Currituck, and Hyde counties.
FOR OUTER BANKS WEDDINGS BY SUSAN SELIG CLASSEN
WHO NEEDS TO GO TO THE REGISTER OF DEEDS OFFICE? Both of you must appear in person to apply for a North Carolina wedding license.
CARRIE ROEN PHOTOGRAPHY
WHEN SHOULD WE GET THE LICENSE? There is no waiting period, so you may use the license from the moment it is issued. However, marriage licenses are valid for only 60 days after they are issued.
WHERE DO WE GET A LICENSE? You can get your license in any county in the state of North Carolina, and you may use that license to get married anywhere in the state. However, while any county in the state can grant you a marriage license to be used for your beach wedding on the Outer Banks, be aware that each office may

differ in their document requirements. If you are obtaining your marriage license from local offices, here is what you need to know about all three counties:
• New in 2016: a satellite office in Corolla with limited services may be available to assist couples during the summer months.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO BRING?
• A valid government picture ID that includes your dates of birth.
For Dare County (Manteo office): • A valid government picture ID that includes your dates of birth. • Social security card or any other official paperwork with your social security number listed, such as a W2 form or old pay stub. • Divorce decree with judge’s signature if your divorce was less than a year ago. If your divorce was more than a year ago, you just need to be able to list the date of the divorce on your application. • If either of you are under 21, you will need a certified birth certificate. Those under age 18 will need more affidavits and should consult the website or Register of Deeds office directly, prior to going.
For Hyde County (Swan Quarter office) • Social security card or any other official paperwork with your social security number listed, such as a W2 form or old pay stub. • If previously married, a divorce decree with proof of termination of marriage. • If under age 18, consult the website or Register of Deeds office directly, prior to going. A dedicated page on Dare and Currituck County’s websites will allow couples to fill out and submit their marriage application before they ever visit the county office. Hyde County’s page provides a downloadable form titled “Worksheet for Preparation of Marriage License” which means that couples arrive prepared at that county offices.

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
Ceremonies BY AMELIA BOLDAJI
T
of a beach-themed wedding is to literally tie the knot. When it comes time for the vows, a couple can be presented with lengths of ribbon or cord which they then use to tie a sailor or fisherman’s knot in order to show how strongly they’re bound together. As with other similar unity ceremonies, this allows the couple to have a physical keepsake of their special moment that can be revisited on subsequent anniversaries, and a symbolic retying of this knot can be a continued part of their vow renewal celebrations for years to come. Remember that unity ceremonies are highly customizable and a large part of their appeal is how striking they are to watch and be a part of. While more elaborate vows can still be shared aloud, the visual symbolism of these types of ceremonies speak volumes so only a few heartfelt words from the betrothed or their officiant can also complete the experience in a simple and yet deeply meaningful manner. Discuss what feels right with your partner, and follow your heart as you decide how you both want to memorialize the moment your two journeys officially become one.

aking vows with the person you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with is perhaps one of the most thrilling – and daunting – aspects of your wedding day. Whether you write your own vows or prefer to let your officiant offer a more traditional speech on your behalf, there are plenty of ways to personalize this experience by combining your vows with distinctive unity ceremonies that represent the momentous step you’re taking by joining your two lives. First, think about the elements around you, particularly if you are planning an outdoor wedding. Sand or salt ceremonies are classic choices, and both complement a beach wedding, especially if you use local sand or sea salt. Couples can pour the grains simultaneously, or, if they choose to dye the grains in their wedding colors, they can take turns pouring the grains in layers to spectacular effect. Either way, the process represents how the grains can no longer be separated just as the couple’s lives will forever be equally combined. Not only is this a beautiful way to show how you’ve joined your hearts, it also gives you a meaningful souvenir of your union that can be cherished for many years. The vessel you use to combine the grains can also be as personal as you’d like – consider using an important engagement gift, an heirloom vase, or even an hourglass to symbolize all the time you’ll have together. Other natural elements like water can also be used in similar ceremonies, but if you’re looking for a further way to incorporate the ocean into your nuptials you might consider a hand-washing ceremony. Salt water has been known for centuries for its cleansing properties, so some couples choose to exchange short vows while their officiant pours ocean water over their palms, symbolizing a fresh start in their journey together. And if you like the idea of using several different elements in one ceremony, you can also light a unity candle or invoke the air by ringing a wind chime made of seashells to signal the completion of your vows. Another compelling way to enact your pledge as part

HASHTAGGING #YourWedding It’s inevitable that pictures from your wedding will show up on social media, so why not embrace technology and take control of the way moments from your big day are shared?

Tips for choosing the perfect hashtag: Make sure it’s easy to spell! This includes not using any abbreviated or creative spellings. Check to see if it’s been used before. A quick search will show if another couple chose the same hashtag for their wedding. Don’t use special characters. Not only can it get confusing, but it will cut your hashtag off. Most sites don’t recognize special characters in hashtags (like “&” for example) and you may end up with only half of your tag being tracked. Capitalize each word in the hashtag. Otherwise it could become difficult to read and remember. Additionally, try to avoid having two of the same letters in a row. #susanaandsteve is a jumbled mess but #SteveAndSusana2016 works just fine! Still having a hard time choosing a hashtag for your big day? Do a quick internet search for “wedding hashtag generator” and let someone else do the work for you! Most are free and all you have to do is enter in your names and sometimes your wedding date and the website will generate a list of hashtags for you to pick from. It’s important to make sure that your guests know what your hashtag is. Choose it early and include it on invitations and anything else your

icking a hashtag for your wedding helps both you and your loved ones keep track of what’s posted on social media and can keep those who couldn’t make it to the festivities feeling like they’re not missing a thing. Before you get started, it’s important to understand what a hashtag is and how it can help you commemorate your wedding. Adding a hashtag, or pound sign, to a BY MEG PUCKETT phrase makes it searchable. If you click on it, you’ll see every post that’s tagged with that same set of words. Some hashtags become so popular that they trend. Most of the time trending tags represent an event, person, or sentiment that is creating worldwide buzz. For example, #MerryChristmas might trend on Twitter if everyone who tweets about the holiday adds that tag to their posts. There is no set list of hashtags. If you add ‘#’ to a phrase, congratulations! You’ve created a hashtag. The first step in hashtagging your wedding is to pick the hashtag that’s right for you. Seems pretty straightforward, but the process of coming up with a tag that’s easy for everyone to remember and track can be difficult.
friends and family might see. Remember, the hashtag doesn’t just have to be for the actual wedding day. Tag pictures of the whole process, from cake tasting and flower shopping to showers and parties – in the end you’ll have a digital scrapbook of your wedding from start to finish. Consider making a few signs to tastefully place around your ceremony and reception sites that include your wedding hashtag and an invitation for guests to post pictures as they celebrate the day with you. Not only will this ensure that your friends and family use the correct hashtag, but it also lets them know that you don’t mind (and even encourage!) that they post pictures during the event. Bonus tip: Set up a charging station at your reception. Your guests can’t get that tag trending if their phone batteries die! Once the celebration is over, you can search your tag to see all of the pictures that were posted by your guests. One very tech savvy way to compile the posts is the web app Storify. Storify allows you to drag and drop all of the tagged posts from different social media platforms into one streamlined, coherent story. It’s estimated that around 55% of couples hashtag their wedding, and it’s a trend that will surely keep growing. After all, the number one tag on Instagram is #love.

Music is at once personal and universal, the language unique to humans. Getting married is a joyous occasion in which to use music to express your love and intertwined passions to the world, while sharing the intimate celebration of your commitment with friends and family. Selected songs must be carefully orchestrated to fit the mood of each part of the wedding: pulsing in the background, flowing seamlessly between the ceremony and the

In general, classically trained musicians can be more expensive because of the high level of skill and education required. The pieces can require new arrangements and of course, many rehearsals. So although the musicians may be on the scene for a brief period, much preparation time is required before your wedding day. Live bands generally are less expensive – though they can be just as skilled as the classical players – but they cost more than a DJ. They may have a particular style of music or play a wide variety of genres. While their list isn’t always as far-reaching as that of a DJ, live bands usually are willing to attempt familiar songs on the spot. Typically a band leader will ask the couple to choose songs from a set list, and the band picks from them during the length of the reception. Professional DJs each have their own programming style that defines what they play and when. Thanks to digital music, most have a nearly limitless selection of music at their fingertips. A good DJ is familiar with a wide range of wedding event music. They are generally able to showcase the musical tastes of the bride and groom as well as play reliable crowd-pleasers that will get guests out on the dance floor. Some DJs also act as a Master of Ceremony and provide their own brand of entertainment. Be sure you ask about a DJs style to make sure it’s a good fit. Also inquire if they are up on the latest releases or have older favorites in their mix, if that’s your taste.

IS IT LIVE … OR DJ?
Your guests start arriving to the site you’ve chosen for your ceremony. As they’re being seated, music floats among the whispers and soft laughter of the friends and family who are being seated in joyful anticipation of the marriage ceremony. As the family members are escorted down the aisle, the music becomes more distinctive, drawing the audience’s attention to the line of attendants making their entrance. Then with a dramatic change in the music, all eyes move to the bride who is making her grand entrance. Music is played at selective times during the marriage ceremony as the newly joined couple begins their wedding march. Most weddings follow this basic music script for the ceremonial part of the wedding, give or take some personal touches.
OUTDOORS OR INSIDE? The big variable is the venue: beach, backyard, or church? Despite the challenges, an outdoor Outer Banks wedding is often a dream come true. Couples choosing to marry here generally pick the casual beach wedding over a church setting. Depending on the setting, weather can be a huge factor in the quality of the music. Reed and stringed instruments, for instance, may not fare well in extreme temperatures or salt air. Vocals or instrumental music may be drowned out by noisy winds. Electrical equipment can be shorted out by rain

or, heaven-forbid, lightning. Even with nice weather, acoustics can be difficult to control outside. It is important to have a backup plan in the event of bad weather. Local couples or those looking for church weddings may choose from many houses of worship of different denominations here on the Outer Banks. If the couple chooses a church wedding, they may have the option of hiring the in-house organist or using pre-recorded music. Wherever the venue, some couples like to provide their own music selections for the DJ from their MP3 player or iPod.
RECEPTION MUSIC
GINGERSNAPS PHOTOGRAPHY
COCKTAIL HOUR
Event DJ Services & Professional Lighting
As the wedding transitions from the solemnity of the ceremony, music for the first hour or so at the reception venue should be upbeat but non-intrusive, fostering conversation and setting the mood for a party. Often the cocktail music will be focused on jazz standards, but pop music also can work well. There is a growing trend with couples choosing more pop-rock songs over traditional music, as well as instrumental versions of songs from groups such as The Piano Guys. Many times the musicians, DJ, or live band hired for the reception can also play for the cocktail hour. Some live bands will have their keyboard player, guitar player and vocalist play “unplugged” or acoustic music for both the ceremony and the cocktail hour. They reunite with the rest of the band and rev it up later for dancing. If the band is adaptable, it can provide a nice transition that guests will enjoy, and it may be more affordable than hiring different musicians for different parts of the wedding. Similarly, classically-trained musicians hired for the ceremony (which can include trumpet, cello, violin, viola, vocals, flute, and/or guitar) can also play livelier music, usually jazz, for the cocktail hour.
FIRST DANCES Typically, the songs for the planned “first” dances – the bride and groom, the bride and her father, the groom and his mother – are selected by the couple. A bandleader or DJ often can help the couple pick out the appropriate first dance songs. Recent trends are leaning toward contemporary favorites such as “All of Me” by John Legend, “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts and “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. Of course, there are still the standard favorites like “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and “My Girl” by the Temptations. If it is a live band, the band makes sure they all learn the chosen songs before the date. Many musicians also are willing, for an additional fee, to arrange a new song provided by the bride.

Here is where the fun really steps up, and the couple can relax and join in the festivities without having to worry. If you want a festive wedding, it pays to hire a great band or DJ, who often serve as the glue for the party. Experienced bandleaders and DJs know to keep tabs on all the reception’s players – the caterer, the photographer, the family, and the guests – to keep things rolling the way they should. Real pros know how to read the crowd and adapt the music accordingly. Ideally the music should inspire people to dance, both slow and fast, and adapt when the younger folks out-number the older folks later on in the party. A last song chosen by the couple is a nice way to close a great gala and leave the guests with wonderful memories.
AFTER PARTY You may be changing both your venue and your music if you have planned an after party. By switching locations, you can arrange to gather at a club where there is live music or request reserve seating. You can also hire a DJ to be ready and waiting at a new location. If you opt to stay put, couples often change the music to suit the late night crowd. From the first note to the last dance, music has the magical ability to loosen up guests, introduce favorite songs and sentiments, and rhythmically seal your union. ♥

AN ENTERTAINMENT CHECKLIST: WHAT MUSICIANS & DJS WANT THE BRIDE AND GROOM TO KNOW. . . • • • • • • • •
Not all song requests may be appropriate for the crowd or the mood. Respect the expertise of those you have hired. A “do not play” list can be restrictive. It is not always possible to perform outside on the beach, especially in high wind and rain. Always have a backup plan in place for outdoor weddings. Even if you are willing to pay for overtime, the venue may not allow it. Check ahead of time if you have the option keep the party going. Happy guests make a great party, so always keep them in mind when choosing the music. Trust the professionalism of the musicians or DJ in reading the crowd. The more trained/experienced the musician, the more they are worth. A phone or in-person consultation is much better than e-mail in helping the entertainer get to know your taste and meet your expectations.
WHAT THE BRIDE AND GROOM SHOULD ASK. . . MUSICIANS & DJS: • • •
What is your musical specialty, background, and experience? Do you charge by the hour or the event? Do you have references?
FOR LIVE MUSIC PERFORMERS: • • • •
Can you accompany vocalists? What are your equipment, power, and space requirements? Have you played at this venue before? Do you have a set list from which you work? Will you provide a copy? Are you willing to learn special songs that are not on your set list? Is there an additional fee?
FOR DJS: • • •
Do you offer additional entertainment beyond playing music? What is your policy on playing overtime? Is there an additional fee? Are you open to taking requests from the wedding party and/or from guests?
FOR OUTDOOR WEDDINGS: • • • •
What is your policy in bad weather? What is your cancellation policy? Do you offer discounted rates on weekdays or off-season dates? How far in advance do you need to be booked?

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
Choosing the right photographer and videographer can ensure that those special moments will be captured in a way that will keep your wedding day alive for years to come. While the price tag for both professionals can be among the most expensive of wedding costs, it is no doubt one worth investing in. Fortunately, the Outer Banks has a wide assortment of talented and dedicated photography professionals to choose from. A quick flip through this magazine is a testament to that. The biggest challenge for couples is sifting through this talented group of artists to choose the one that is right for you, your style and your wedding venue. There is a lot to keep in mind, but breaking it down and following this guide can help you in deciding which photographer and videographer will be the perfect match for you on your wedding day.
MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY
MAKE IT YOUR STYLE One of the most important points to consider when hiring a photographer is determining your style. There are a number of popular styles of wedding photography out there, so read the list below to get started. Be sure to talk to photographers about their forte and comfort zone regarding style or combination of styles and, of course, consider the popular trends in photography as we’ve detailed below.
Portraits If you are looking for traditional portraits, seek out a photographer who specializes in them. Prior to the wedding, a portrait photographer will arrange for shots of the wedding couple, family, friends and the wedding party. Photographers may shoot portraits in the studio or in more creative locales such as the sand dunes, on the beach, or beside piers.
Documentary or Photojournalistic This type of photography specializes in candid or spontaneous photographs as opposed to posed portraits. If you are looking for photos that capture the moment and tell a story, this
may be the style for you. With documentary photography, you will see fewer photos of people who are lined up and smiling into the camera. These photographers will capture more fluid and spontaneous images of the entire event, and in the end, you will have a wedding story in photos.
Artistic This style allows the photographers to put their own creative touch into the photographic process. Photographers can make photos appear dramatic, old fashioned, or soft and dreamy. They can choose which part of the composition to blur, sending the focus to artistic imagery and actions. Think elegant photos of the wedding dress, last minute shots as the bride gets ready and candid moments with the bridesmaids. Some photographers opt to shoot both digitally and with film so that they have wider latitude in choosing styles and effects. If you want journalistic or artistic photography plus portraiture, check to make sure your photographer is willing to do different styles. Some don’t. One way to get a good sense of a photographer’s style is to look through his or her portfolio. You want your family to savor these memories for generations, so be sure to communicate your desires to the photographer.
OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM
OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM
PERSONALITY MATTERS The bottom line is that your photographer has to be someone you genuinely like. Remember, this person is going to be a big part of your wedding day. If you find the photographer you are interviewing to be inflexible, pushy, abrasive, or just plain annoying, those sentiments will come across in the photos that are taken. Weddings can be stressful enough, so you need to hold onto all the joy that comes with the big day. One tip: Imagine that your photographer is one of the guests at your wedding and be sure this person is someone you would be happy to have attend. A warning flag should go up if you are asking all the questions and the photographer is not asking you anything. Photographers should be interested in how you want your wedding day to go. They need to know important details such as how many people are in the wedding party, the lighting at the venue, whether there will be dancing, who your attendants are, and how long you anticipate each phase of your wedding to last. These questions show they are invested, sensitive to detail, and interested in getting the best shots. If they are not asking, it may be time to consider interviewing another photographer. PACKAGES, PROOFS, PRIVACY, AND PRINTS There is a lot more that goes into hiring a photographer than what shots he or she will take on the wedding day. If you follow some simple guidelines, you can make the hiring process easier and lessen the possibility of undesirable surprises. During the interview, be sure to ask the photographer what packages are available and whether you can customize a package based on your preferences. The photographer should also let you know what album designs are offered and whether he or she will help create an album. Policies on features such as retouching and color adjustment are also important details to hammer out before a contract is signed. It is important to get answers such as whether the proofs will be retouched or if that happens only after the photos are selected. You should know before you hire a photographer whether there is an additional cost for retouching. Find out how many images you will get back and whether they will be high-resolution or low-resolution. Inquire if you will be able to reprint photos or if the photographer retains the rights to the images and negatives. MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY

The cost of the package and what services are covered is essential information. Ask about reprints, mini-albums, wall portraits, printing on canvas, frames, and which of those items are considered add-ons. And don’t ever be pressured to commit to a package on the spot. Know the timeline for when you will receive the proofs and inquire about whether you will be able to view them online or if you will get them on a CD. Check what the ordering process is and how long it will take to receive your photos or album. It typically takes two to three weeks to get your wedding images back. Often, completed print orders can be provided within eight to ten weeks. It’s a good idea to ask whether the photographer will give you the negatives or digital images and if there is a fee involved. Another consideration in this age of social media is privacy. Some photographers will post wedding albums online so that your wedding guests can order their own prints, and as a way to show off their professional portfolio to future clients. If you are concerned about privacy, find out ahead of time who will be given passwords to your photo collection, how long they will be posted, and who determines which photos to post. Always insist on a written contract, know how much of a deposit is required, and inquire about possible payment plans if need be. Other need-to-know information includes the photographer’s refund/cancellation policy and whether they have liability insurance. A contract should include details of what services will be provided at what price, conflict resolution terms, overtime policies, etc. It is definitely time to walk away from the photographer who says that he or she doesn’t use contracts.

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
The Right Angle: Take Advantage of Where You Are Don’t forget all the reasons you picked the Outer Banks as your venue in the first place – the majestic ocean, romantic beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets! With this in mind, it is important to discuss details with your photographer about making the most of the natural environment on your wedding day. Remember that here on the Outer Banks, the sun rises over the ocean and sets on the sound. Time your wedding day and photographs accordingly if you are interested in sun-related shots. Ask about high and low tide on your wedding day and how that will affect your photos. Inquire about backup plans if the weather thwarts your desire for glorious outdoor photos.
Take away color, and you are left to completely focus on emotions, people and composition. Black and white photography will never be out of style. In fact, couples love it and enjoy mixing it in with color shots. Any color photo can be changed to black and white - or just portions of the photo can be colorized to make just the bride’s bouquet and the groom’s boutonnière pop out in a sea of gray, for example. Your photographer is the right person to ask if the image works well monochromatically or if it’s better in color. You can view it with just a click, thanks to digital photography. So if you are looking for drama, a vintage photo feel, or simply love the look, consider tried and true, black and white photos.
Small Booth = Instant Photo Fun Photo booths at weddings provide not only entertainment for your wedding guests but they also create an instant keepsake for them to take home. In addition to the photos that your guests will keep, today’s photo booths will automatically capture all of the day’s shots on a single DVD for the wedding couple to see and share later. Photo booth mementos make excellent gifts and are sure to be some of your favorite, unscripted sights from the wedding.

Drone Photos Drones are everywhere and weddings aren’t any exception. Drones are perfect at providing aerial views of your wedding venue as well as hard to get vantage points of your wedding ceremony. Just think - an overhead shot of your processional, the dance floor, the toast...the possibilities are truly endless.
Just for You Intimate shots of the happy couple are very popular these days. A boudoir approach says: for your eyes only. Imagine tasteful forms shot through sheer curtains with available light – clad in delicate nightwear. An embrace, private kiss, or cozy couple in a soft bedroom chair can be romantic and make an awesome wedding gift to each other.

Selfie Stations Selfie Stations are popping up at weddings, complete with props and great lighting. Here, guests can take their own wedding selfies to remember their day on your special day.
What About a Videographer? A photographer at your wedding is really a no-brainer. But the videographer can be just as important. After all, photos can’t capture the sounds, movements, and all of the emotions that go into your wedding day. Videos can immortalize every word of your vows, every music note during the reception, and every smile during the toast. The most recent trend in videography is high-definition. In addition, new technology will allow you to add vintage-style scenes to your video. For example, a Super 8 effect, which gives the video a grainy feel, can allow you to enhance some classic shots. A videographer can improve color, contrast and volume after the film has been shot. Typically an amateur shooting a home video does not have the ability to meet all the challenges of videotaping a wedding. A bonus in hiring a professional videographer is that they have filmed dozens of weddings and can anticipate the crucial moments of the day. They also have the audio equipment to meet challenges in our unique environment, such as capturing the vows with the ocean roaring in the background or lighting contrasts between bright beaches and shaded piers. When it comes to documenting your special day so you can return to it years from now through photographs, the most important thing to remember is to go with the professionals. Don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions and be sure your personalities match. Be assertive and don’t settle for a style you don’t want. In other words, know what you want and don’t be afraid to ask for it.

Before you hire A Check List :
The consensus among most wedding planning experts is that you should hire your photographer as soon as possible – at least six months before the big day. But that doesn’t mean you should do so without careful consideration. Be sure the photographer meets your vision and needs. Once you have established that the photographer has your wedding date open and is willing to shoot the style you are looking for, ask these questions:
How long have you been a professional photographer, and how many weddings have you shot? Have you photographed weddings at the site where our event is being held? Will you be the actual photographer, or do you utilize assistants? How do you describe your working style? How will you be dressed? What type of equipment do you use? Do you shoot digitally, with film, or both? Do you photograph in both color and black and white? What backup equipment do you bring with you to weddings? May I request specific shots or groups of people that need to be captured? Do you have any other events to shoot on the same days as our wedding events?
CARRIE ROEN PHOTOGRAPHY GINGERSNAPS PHOTOGRAPHY

What time will photographers arrive, and how long will they shoot? If the wedding events last longer than anticipated, will you stay and how much do you charge for overtime? If a videographer is being hired, ask if the photographer has ever worked with him or her on another job and how they recommend coordinating their efforts. Ask to see the photographer’s portfolio – including photographs from all events at a wedding. Ask for references. (Contact three or four couples who have hired the photographer and had weddings similar in size and style to yours.) ♥

Let the Countdown BEGIN!
Ok, so you’ve set the date…now what!? Well, aside from the seemingly endless wedding to-do list you have probably already started making, begin preparing your mind and body for show time. There are probably some facets of your health or fitness that you’ve been wanting to focus on more, so what better time to start than now?

The memories of your wedding day will be keepsakes that you cherish, made up of moments of laughter, tears, dancing, and probably a minor mishap or two, let’s just be honest. One thing that is certain, however, is that you will always remember how you felt that day. And in case you start to forget, rest assured you will have plenty of photos to help remind you as the years go by. Make those memories happy ones by feeling good about yourself, because when you feel beautiful it shows! Do yourself a favor and be sure to set aside some time and energy to focus on you in the days leading up to your wedding. Follow this helpful beauty guide to ensure you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself on your wedding day!
By this time you’ve probably already chosen the dress of your dreams, and therefore know what, if any, areas you want to focus on improving. Whether it is fitnessrelated, the condition of your hair, or a skin-related issue, now is the time to get serious. Consider seeing a dermatologist or begin a new regimen that coincides with your goal of healthy looking skin. You don’t want to wait too long to test the waters on new skin care products, and you also want enough time to start seeing the results of your efforts. Even if you’re happy with your body, more sleep, exercise, and even a little meditation and yoga incorporated into your routine will be practices you will thank yourself for down the road. Now is also a good time to research hair and makeup professionals on the Outer Banks. Either by phone or in person, these talented artists can help you decide on the makeup and hair that will best suit your dress and style. Considering your venue will also be important! If your celebration is outside on the beach, consider relaxed hairstyles and natural makeup. If you are planning on being indoors in a dimly lit venue, consider more dramatic shades and a hairstyle you don’t need to worry about getting messed up in the ocean breeze. It’s hard to tell what’s best for a bride because each one is unique. All the more reason to find a local stylist and makeup artist that will help you create a tailor-made look that complements all of the aspects of your wedding. Although the Outer Banks is chock-full of these beauty geniuses, they book up fast, even in the wedding off-season, so after doing a little research go ahead and snag one up!
Two Months Prior
To tan or not to tan? If you’ve decided to let the natural beauty of your skin radiate through on your wedding day, that’s great. If you’re looking for tanning options for a golden glow and are opting for the self-tanning route, start experimenting a couple of months out so that you have mastered the application and desired shade long before the big day!
One Month Away
One thing you will definitely be wearing at your wedding is a smile, so if you feel that needs a little boost, consider booking a deep cleaning with your dentist

and nails. And not to mention your nerves! Don’t forget about your groom and his men either. Consider booking a chartered fishing trip or hang gliding lessons for the guys.
Two Weeks to Go!
THE BIG DAY!
This is a good time to put the finishing touches on your hair. Perfecting your overall color or highlights is good to do a couple of weeks out as it gives the dye a chance to settle. If you’re looking for a last-minute trial run with the Outer Banks stylist you’ve chosen, why not book an appointment to update your color at the same time?
One Week ‘til Showtime
If you’ve chosen the Outer Banks for your destination wedding, you have made the right choice! The abundance of day spas and salons in the area means plenty of options for you to choose from to get beautiful right before your big day! Treat yourself and your bridesmaids to a mani/ pedi spa day at one of the many locations along the beach for a much-needed girls’ retreat to put those last-minute finishing touches on your skin
When you wake up on the morning of your wedding, rested and ready for one of the biggest days of your life, take a deep breath, relax your mind, and then get ready to get beautiful! Wearing the right makeup for the weather and setting is key, so choosing a local makeup artist is the perfect way to let the professionals do what they’re trained to do, so you can sit back and relax! If you’ve chosen to do your own makeup and hair, keep in mind the weather that day, the venue, and go with what reflects you! If you’re confident, happy and let your love shine through, your beauty will radiate! Congratulations! ♥

here wedding flowers are concerned, it can be hard to know where to begin. You
might think you have a favorite flower but what if the flowers don’t look the same in person as they did in a magazine? Hint: they won’t, because flower colors are never exact. Let a professional florist help you understand the undertones of different varieties; for example, red ranunculus has orange undertones that stand out when paired with cool colors. Many of the photographs you see online or in magazines can be misleading. As photographers are color-correcting for skin tone and lighting, they may also adjust flower colors beyond what is realistic.
Your florist will guide your selections so that the flowers you choose will be in season when the big day rolls around. He or she will be more than happy to work with you to convert your vision into a stunning and affordable reality. But be open-minded. Let’s say you have your heart set on white tulips for a July wedding or red peonies in August – be flexible when your florist tells you that the flowers you love simply are not in season then. There are many flowers available year-round, like roses, hydrangeas, carnations, callas, and orchids, just to name a few. It’s time to turn to the professionals and let them help you relax and have fun with the process. The trend towards local and sustainable continues to make its way to the flower world and couples are considering their ‘footprint’ as they make their selections. You will find that local blooms at your wedding will be naturally more fragrant and hardy than the ones shipped halfway around the world. If you are on a limited budget, consider going monochromatic for a bigger impact. A monochromatic color scheme looks incredibly organized and really gives your ceremony and reception a pop of color that is sure to wow even in the smallest amounts. Another way to save is by mixing live flowers with other natural elements. Perhaps your reception tables will be decorated vases filled with small seashells and driftwood alongside candle pillars. Just how extensively are you planning to use flowers? Are you suiting out the entire bridal party with bouquets, corsages, or boutonnières? This includes you, your soonto-be spouse, groomsmen, bridesmaids, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, flower girls (hair garland or petals), and ring bearer. Are you decorating an entire chapel and reception hall? Is your ceremony going to be on the beach on uneven sand and dune lines? Will there be a chuppah, arbor, or canopy that needs to be constructed

as well as decorated? When you interview potential florists, show them a photograph of your wedding attire and perhaps a swatch of fabric for the bridesmaids’ dresses, along with any pictures from magazines that have captured your imagination.
Tips: You want your wedding flowers to be beautiful – and so will your florist. Here are a few tips for making that happen.
Know Your Budget Hands down, the very first thing to discuss with your florist is going to be the budget. A good florist won’t try to upsell beyond what you can afford– they truly want to work with you to create your vision within the limits of your pocketbook. A potential budget buster? Bridesmaid’s bouquets and groomsmen’s boutonnières. If you are on a tight budget, focus on your bouquet and make your attendants’ arrangements smaller and simpler – and therefore less expensive. Mismatched bridesmaid bouquets are an emerging trend, allowing for a little individuality with their bouquets. A fun idea is to have each bridesmaid carry a single flower that represents what is in the larger bridal bouquet.
Find Your Inspiration Pick one thing you love – a certain color, a special photo, a swatch of antique lace, or a cherished brooch that belonged to your great-grandmother – to give you and your florist a starting point.
Find a Florist You Really Love
Coastal Blooms Florist For all your floral needs.
When you have that initial meeting with a florist, enjoy yourself! See if you connect and if so, let them help you determine your dream flower ideas. You should feel that your florist is as excited as you are to help you arrive at your vision of what you would like for your day.
Personalize Your Bouquet Incorporate something special into your wedding bouquet (and do not restrict yourself to flowers). If you and your fiancé have something that is special to you, find a way to incorporate that. For instance, if you met on a train, you could tie a small train charm into your bouquet to symbolize where you met and fell in love.
Break Tradition

If you are not planning a traditional wedding, your flowers certainly do not have to be traditional either. And there’s no need to limit yourself to roses and calla lilies. Some brides are incorporating jewels and even paper arrangements – whatever speaks to your wedding and your vision. You don’t have to limit your containers to clear glass vases either. If it will hold water, it can hold your flowers. And if it doesn’t hold water, consider any container to be useful as a vessel to hold everyday ceramic flower pots and planters. Are you both fishing aficionados? Fill tackle boxes with flowers to show off your personality and perhaps symbolize how you met. Whether you are following new trends or staying true to tradition, have fun with your flowers. Attend wedding shows to get ideas and make a list of your needs. Do some online research to get a general idea of what you can expect to spend and then start to interview florists. You will want a florist who knows design, color, and has some flair. Also, don’t be shy about asking other vendors, photographers, banquet managers, hair stylists and wedding gown salespeople about weddings they have seen with memorable flowers. ♥

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
If you’re planning an Outer Banks ceremony and reception, let the wild beauty of the coast, the deep sunsets and the carefree mentality inspire your motif and radiate through your confectionary centerpiece. Choose a cake that will reflect your style, your theme, or the beautiful place you have chosen for your nuptials in one of the innumerable design options to display your cake. We know it’s a big decision, and that is why we’re here to help. Take a look at these wedding cake trends for 2016 for a little guidance and then put your personal spin on our suggestions to construct the wedding cake of your dreams!
one-tier design, options abound this year. One-tier wedding cakes are entering the scene as a popular look for low-key, outdoorsy couples. Often decorated in rustic, unfinished ways, one-tiered cakes contain many layers, enough to feed guests at a small wedding, and can help keep your budget at single-level too. These sweet and simple stacks are perfect for brides who have chosen a more pragmatic approach, and the “less is more” take on the cake can be a simple work of absolute beauty. On the other end of the confectioner’s spectrum, big cakes still reign supreme. Multi-layer statement piece cakes in four, five and six-tiers can be matched to whatever personality or theme you choose. These fit-for-royalty comeback cakes are standing out in metallic buttercreams, ruffles, sequins and lace. Also popular in 2016 are varying cake shapes, stacked within tiers of alternating square, round and you-name-it shaped cakes.
Know Your Limits Determining the boundaries you have for your cake is the first step. Your budget and your venue are going to be key factors when deciding where to begin. Discuss your budget with local wedding cake professionals and ask for photos of their previous creations. Show photos of your gown, decorations, venue and anything else to illustrate a better idea of who you are and the atmosphere where your cake will be the centerpiece. Your venue will also determine some of your cake decisions. If your reception is on the beach during the summer, you will most likely stay away from buttercream, whipped cream and meringue, as they will create a runny mess. Fondant-covered cakes withstand higher temperatures and maintain their shape and appearance from the first slice to the last bite. Many people prefer the sweet taste of buttercream to fondant, but the choice is yours. If you decide on fondant, discuss with your baker ways to make it as thin as possible while keeping the same results, and opt for a buttercream filling for best taste.
Hand-Painted Cakes Delicate hand-painted floral patterns crafted upon sleek fondant create an antique sense of whimsy this year. There is no need for adornments with this edible piece of art. Another popular trend for couples to display their personal style through hand-painted work is reminiscent of a groom’s cake. Intricate artistic creations, favorite literary or Hollywood characters and scenes can create a sweet, fun-loving cake to represent the couple’s convivial attitude or personal love story.
The Wedding Cake That Isn’t a Cake When is a wedding cake not a wedding cake? When it is a platter of donuts, of course. Personalize a tier of multi-flavored wedding cupcakes or a tower of colorful macarons instead of offering one single cake and flavor. Or consider a table full of pies or individual tarts to highlight the freshest nuts and fruits during your wedding season.
What’s Your Flavor? Now this is where it starts to get good. Over the past few years, offering a different, yet one-dimensional flavor for each tier of the cake was a crowd-pleaser, but in 2016, one luscious, exotic flavor combination for the entire cake is making waves with the wedding crowds. Use this tasty trend to celebrate your roots, your foodie flare, or the “heritage” of your hometown with flavors reminiscent of places, times, people, and memories. Are you a Southern girl at heart? Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting invokes nothing short of a scene straight out of Steel Magnolias. Did you and your fiancé get engaged in the islands over pina coladas? Choose a coconut cake with a key lime buttercream filling and smile at each other upon first bite, remembering that special night that led you to this memorable day. Innovative concoctions like this will have everyone guessing and discussing the flavors as if they were food connoisseurs themselves, and then ooh-ing and ahh-ing when you explain the heartwarming reason behind your flavor decision.
To Top or Not to Top…That is the Question
DEBORAHSAWYER.COM
Opt out of a cake topper this year and choose a sophisticated design or decoration situated along the tiers instead. Many couples are choosing a polished look with a smooth top rather than selecting a cake topper. Tiers featuring cascading flowers, either sugar or fresh and edible, are prominent. Remember, if you are using fresh blooms, double check with your florist to ensure that the flowers have not been sprayed with pesticides and are truly edible. substituting fresh berries will add color and flare to your cake. Baroque metallic adornments or hints of lace that are reminiscent of this year’s wedding gown trends also make for stunning accent pieces for cakes that are bold enough to stand without a topper. Still like the idea of situating something atop your reception confection? Have your cake and eat it too. Written inspirations like, “The best is yet to come,” “Happily ever after,” and “Always & Forever,” in metallic cursive or bamboo lettering can add an elegant finish to your cake while avoiding the traditional figurine topper.
And for the Grand Finale… Skip the sweets bar and dessert table this year and do like many other 2016 brides are doing…serve your cake as the dessert. Previously, weddings have displayed sweets tables, decadent cake pops, color-coded candies, and cupcake tiers, among other treats. Many beach brides will opt for a simpler approach and serve the wedding cake as the meal’s grand finale. 2016 is an exciting year to choose a wedding cake! Where new flavor combinations pop, traditional tastes still hold their own. While towering tiers make lasting impressions, so do single-tier rustic cakes, or better yet, cakes that aren’t even cakes at all! You can tie in the overall theme and color scheme with your decadent centerpiece or have it stand alone as an eye-catching conversation starter, or simply a direct reflection of you as a couple…in sugar form! No matter how you choose to incorporate the cake into your reception, choosing something you love that represents you will be the best way to go! ♥

Amy* (not her real name) was newly engaged, and the dazzling sparkle on her left hand inspired her as she started planning her Outer Banks wedding. She had a full year before any vows were spoken, so she felt very comfortable handling everything from their home in northern Virginia.
“Both of our families rent a place in Duck every summer. This is where we met. Plus, we already had ‘our restaurant’ picked out to do the catering,” Amy says. “It was going to be so simple!” She began selecting ocean-inspired wedding colors and invitations from a state away. Her aunt and mother offered to help decorate on the day of the wedding, and the groomsmen said they would help with transportation so that everyone was on cue. “I checked out the online portfolios for photographers, florists, and ceremony sites; it was so easy!” she says. “I was trying to save money by not paying someone else to do what I could do with a little help from my family and friends.” With many important decisions seemingly covered from afar, she declined getting a wedding planner. “Then it happened. I found out that there were restrictions on which vendors I could use and how fast we had to be in and out of the ceremony site. I found out that the rehearsal dinner at our cottage counted as a ‘wedding related event’ in Duck which meant registration and parking questions. And

Working with a professional who already lives at your wedding destination means that they is able to navigate the local regulations for you.
Who Hires Wedding Planners? Following is a list of circumstances that may make you want to consider bringing in the pros to plan your wedding:
You Have a Strict Budget The average cost of a U.S. wedding in 2015 was $29,142 and almost 50% of all couples will end up spending more than their budgeted amount. Only about 20% of today’s weddings are financed by the bride’s parents. While a wedding planner’s fees can seem like yet another line item on an already long list of expenses, a good planner will, in fact, help the couple stick to their budget, plan for the unexpected expenses, and even may pass along discounts from vendors to make the wedding tab smaller in the long run.
You Have Full-Time Jobs Planning a destination wedding can feel like reporting for a new part time job from many miles away. Imagine that over the course of the next year, you and your partner are starting a venture in a career that you are not trained to do.

If tulle makes your skin crawl, perhaps your personality and strengths steer in other directions. For that, a wedding planner can save the day. A good planner will listen keenly as you describe your favorite colors, music, lighting, fabrics and textures, and will find a way to transform your vision into a tasteful and creative event.

You Want to Enjoy Your Wedding Weekend A bride who is planning her own wedding easily can slip into the role of a travel agent and reservationist for every guest, in addition to writing vows, selecting music - you name it. With a wedding planner, the couple is able to enjoy their beach wedding instead of working out logistics with caterers, photographers and guests.

Keep the peace! With so many egos to bruise along the way, sometimes it helps to have a neutral party who doesn’t bring ego and expectation, rather expertise and experience. Your planner will happily take the heat for not utilizing your distant grandniece to be the flower girl. They also will calm your mother-in-law when you walk into the ocean surf in your wedding dress during your trash-the-dress photo shoot. And if you assign your planner the task of transitioning from ceremony to reception, you won’t worry that they’ve been asked to line up for an important family photo at just the same time.
Many associate hiring a wedding planner with having a big budget affair, but planners go with budget-conscious brides, too. Today’s planners will ensure a couple stays within their budget. A planner located within the same community of the nuptials can be more accurate with estimating true costs and can anticipate the unexpected costs that are likely to occur. A wedding planner’s expertise does come at a cost, but there are different levels of service that will make it a custom fit:

Let’s say you want a realistic budget tailored to everything you need to get married on the Outer Banks, but then you plan to negotiate all the vendor contracts and do the wedding planning yourself. When a couple needs help with just a few aspects of the event planning, they may hire a planner at an hourly rate to act as a consultant.
The Day-of Planner A bride who is hands-on about planning every facet of her own wedding may opt for a day-of wedding planner. A day-of planner, as the name implies, is there for the entire wedding day to ensure that the actual ceremony happens without any hitches allowing the couple to enjoy a stress-free day. Somewhat of a misnomer, however, a day-of planner also tends to put in plenty of hours prior to the wedding day. When you consider how much they will be held accountable for your planning, it makes sense that a day-of contract typically includes assistance at the rehearsal, many phone calls to vendors, and some in-person meetings in the weeks prior to the ceremony. The day-of planner will also have “Plan B” up their sleeve if it rains.
The Full-Service Planner This level of assistance is what most people envision when they hear the term wedding planner. A full-service planner will toil hundreds of hours on your behalf for many months leading up to the big day. Services covered typically include budget preparation (and adher-

ence), negotiating vendor contracts, tracking RSVPs, guest accommodation coordination, wedding party gifts, rehearsal coordination, and countless scheduled check-ins with the marrying couple. By the time the wedding day and the departing brunch rolled around, Amy realized she had spent most of her time on the Outer Banks making sure vendors, guests, and the wedding party knew where to be and when. “I was exhausted. The photographers could barely find me when it was time to take the important photos,” she says. “And I probably wasted a lot of money in the process by not using package deals where they were available.” A wedding planner who lives on the Outer Banks can handle all aspects of your destination wedding allowing you to sail away on your honeymoon, stress-fre

How many weddings will you be managing on any given weekend? How much of the work will your assistant(s) perform? While they may have an entire team of assistants, their performance at your event may be taxed by too many emergencies. Also, you may have shopped around and finally found a planner with whom you click, only to find out that they delegate much of the work to less experienced assistants. You will want to meet or interview anyone who will be making major decisions on your behalf.
How do you prefer to communicate with your clients? A planner who is well-versed in e-mails, text, or social media, is well-suited for the distance planning involved with destination weddings.
How involved are you with the rest of our wedding party?
What to ask a Wedding Planner In addition to the obvious requests for cost estimates and referrals, there are tailored questions you can ask to help you find a planner well-versed in beach weddings.
What have you done in a previous emergency situation that saved the day? Not only might you discover quirks about your Outer Banks venue, but also you may find out what another couple did when complications arose.
What was the most unusual wedding request you’ve ever had? You’ll find out how flexible your planner is and if your tastes match.
Find out now if your future mother-in-law can call your planner directly about the rehearsal dinner or your maid of honor will be able get recommendations from your planner for bachelor(ette) parties and other extras.
How do you plan around wedding season and Saturday check-in dates? Couples need to factor in fluctuations reflected by peak wedding season rates, weekend hours, or even 4-wheel drive access expenses. By the way, peak wedding season on the Outer Banks is not June; rather it occurs during the shoulder months, in spring and fall, when the summer tourism traffic and rates are low and weather leans toward the spectacular. Also, with Saturday check-ins at many rentals, couples frequently do not plan to tie the knot on a Saturday. ♥

he best place to start is with basic questions such as your budget, anticipated guest count, the style you want to achieve, and your ideal location. From there you can begin to brainstorm ways to bring your natural surroundings to life with unique design elements that work together to create a truly personal and memorable experience. No matter what route you choose to take, one wedding trend that never goes out of style involves using the defined space of tented layouts to encourage a romantic and intimate feel without necessarily sacrificing your access to the great outdoors. And if you like the idea of setting aside a comparable space for your nuptials but want to go in a more mini-
malist direction, you might consider other artistic structures such as canopies, chuppahs, or arbors that highlight sacred areas such as the ceremonial spot where you’ll finally say “I do.”
Canopies, Chuppahs, and Arbors
Starting with one of the more simple options, sharing your vows underneath the defined space of a decorated canopy, chuppah, or an arbor is a wonderfully romantic way to begin your life together that draws on traditions dating back to biblical times. In Judaism, a traditional chuppah (which translates from Hebrew to the more secular canopy) consists of a prayer shawl or other type of cloth attached to four poles, and it’s held over the betrothed to symbolize the couple’s future home. This increasingly popular type of structure is amazingly versatile and it can range aesthetically from the orthodox look of chuppahs to ornate canopies that resemble festive gazebos. Wedding arbors also act as similar archways, but are typically more open structures that often utilize interwoven lattices to define a point of entry into the couple’s new journey together.

Once you’ve picked a style that you like, you can check with rental companies to see what they have available or work with a professional to construct something wholly original. If you’re handy you can even make one yourself with natural elements such as driftwood or bamboo, or purchase a kit online for maximum DIY ease. When it comes to personalizing the design of your canopy, chuppah, or arbor, remember that the sky’s the limit! Lush floral frames are by far the most popular choices, but you can also incorporate greenery and other decorative touches such as lengths of ribbon or sheer fabric draped to catch the breeze. Accenting almost any display is fun and easy as well with any number of gorgeous garlands – use transparent fishing line to string together everything from seashells and starfish to paper flowers. Depending on the time of day you might also add strings of lights or hang Japanese lanterns in order to cast a fairy-tale glow over your first wedded kiss!

Having an outdoor wedding on the Outer Banks can be a dream come true. With a stunningly diverse array of venues that include historical sites and maritime forests as well as ever-popular seaside options, the natural beauty of this area can serve as the perfect backdrop for virtually any type of ceremony. When it comes to planning your décor this means that it’s easy to let your personality and creativity shine through – whether you love to glam it up or you prefer a less-is-more approach.
Taking Cover with Tents Weather can be unpredictable on the Outer Banks – particularly when it comes to wind and rain – so using a larger tented layout for your outdoor ceremony can be a practical move. Practical purposes aside, there are a wide variety of tents to choose from that will suit any style. Clear-topped tents allow light to steam in while still providing some protection, while others include elegant details such as cathedral or Frenchstyle windows, and some are structured more like large canopies. Depending on the size of your venue, you may consider using one grand tent for the main celebrations

while also adding other smaller tents that cover everything from walkways and entrances to cushioned lounge areas where guests can gather in a more private setting. No matter what size they are, tents are great for adding lighting and other dramatic details to your outdoor event. Creative use of fabrics is key here. Classic, full pleated tent liners are always in demand, and they provide a wonderfully romantic look with lights placed behind them. Swags and drapes also contribute to an intimate atmosphere and add dimension to any space, particularly when combined with eye-catching hurricane lanterns or chandeliers. And if your tent has interior poles you can cover them in matching fabrics or embrace them and accentuate the space by wrapping them in rope or strands of twinkling lights.

Think about adding texture with organic fabrics and elegant sheers, or introduce wood accents for a clean, rustic look. Your choice of colors can also bring your overall theme together. Shades of green or blue can always be used to invoke your natural surroundings, though if you prefer something more dramatic you can combine lighter hues with bright colors such as a bold orange for a fresh, vibrant look. For a more classic approach, consider pairing neutrals such as cream and white with gold or metallic accents to add a glamorous luster that works particularly well with the soft illumination of an evening affair.

One word of caution: Rules and regulations regarding tents vary from town to town. Some require permits, fees, and/or have size restrictions for erecting tents on the beach so it’s best to call ahead and find out what the town you’re planning on getting married in requires. Event and rental homes can also have similar requirements that you’ll need to be aware of in advance, so you’ll want to check with your property management company if you’re planning to conduct your ceremony on your rental property. If you’re short on time or you’d just prefer to let someone else handle these logistics, consider working with a local wedding planner who can help negotiate the ins and outs of various venues well before your big day.
Don’t forget! The Décor is in the Details Many tent rental companies also offer a full range of other services, providing everything from tables and chairs to linens, so be sure to do your research ahead of time depending on your needs. And remember that once you’ve customized the spatial arrangements of your ceremony, there are still plenty of ways to accentuate your overall vision with other islandinspired finishing touches such as tiki torches, seashell bouquet or message in the bottle table toppers, and fun extras that can include ditching confetti in favor of a beach ball toss while you celebrate on the sand. Every wedding has its own flavor so don’t be afraid to take risks as you set the stage for an event you’ll never forget!

Wedding Day MISHAPS
BY LEXI HOLIAN
Every couple should have a few backup plans in place in case something unexpected occurs during the ceremony or the reception. Here are a few scenarios to consider that are relevant to the Outer Banks and tying the knot at the beach.
OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM
Choosing the Date
Rain on Your Wedding Day Of course with any outdoor wedding, you must consider the weather. Everyone is hoping for clear skies on your big day, but when the storm clouds roll in, you should have a backup plan. On the bright side, dramatic skies make for some strikingly beautiful wedding photographs. Local planners will encourage couples to embrace the rain (tradition says it is good luck) and incorporate some umbrellas matching the wedding colors into the photo shoot. Even if the skies are clear, there are other factors to consider. The Outer Banks is one of the windiest places on the East Coast because of the unique way the sandbar juts out into the Atlantic. After all, our steady winds attracted the Wright Brothers to our sand dunes too. So if blustery breezes make an appearance during your wedding, be sure not to set the table cards next to the candles – as one planner told us made for a very exciting reception. Also consider using a microphone during a beach ceremony, especially if you have a large audience. On a gusty day when the wind is blowing just right, no one will be able to hear what you or the officiant is saying without reinforcement. Then, naturally, there is the summer heat – another reason for the popular shoulder season. If you are planning a summer wedding, a shortened or late afternoon ceremony can really benefit everyone in attendance. Make sure guests are aware of average temperature ranges before they arrive on the Outer Banks so they can dress appropriately.
Most Outer Banks wedding planners will tell you that they coordinate more weddings on weekdays than on weekends, and they prefer it too. The norm for vacation management companies is to rent homes from Saturday to Saturday, or less often Sunday to Sunday and Friday to Friday. This arrangement makes weekend weddings difficult as most couples do not want to worry about arriving or leaving just one day before and after their nuptials. You can try to set up an extended rental week or midweek dates with the rental agency, but do not rely on it. When holding a ceremony or reception at an event home, you will come to realize that most property management companies will only book up to one year in advance. Their reservation calendars give priority to guests who rented the same week the year before. But do not stress, you can always put your name on a waitlist. Check with the management company to see when waitlisting will become available, and waitlist more than one home. Most agencies will allow three. Again, it’s all about flexibility.
Bridge Back-Up Planning a weekend wedding is not only a challenge because of the vacation rental check-in day tradition. If you have been to the Outer Banks before, you know all about the weekend traffic woes. Crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge in the summertime can take hours, and those staying in Duck or Corolla have a slow road ahead of them after that. If you choose to say your vows on a summer weekend, expect to have transportation delays. Travel will be delayed not only for your wedding party and guests but for the vendors too. If you are having trouble getting to your venue on time, so are your florist and caterer. Traffic and off-season rates are a couple of the main reasons couples cite when selecting the popular “shoulder season” (spring and fall) for their Outer Banks weddings. Many also opt for a midweek wedding or even one on Friday if work schedules limit guests’ availability.
KERI PAMPUCH
OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM
Of course, a Saturday or Sunday wedding may be a necessity if that is the date your dream venue is available; but when planning a toes-in-the-sand, seaside wedding, remember that you are on island time. The ocean is there each and every day of the week.
DIY Versus Hiring a Professional Do-it-yourself crafts can be a great way to save money on wedding décor, but make sure that any Pinterest projects for your wedding are finished well in advance and do not require your attention on the actual day of your wedding. This will free you to focus on your partner and give yourselves fully to the beautiful vows you are about to make. Early in the planning process, try your hand at a few crafts. The most important thing is that you are happy with the end result, so if it does not go quite as hoped for, accept that a professional may be better suited for the job. As one area planner said, “Hiring a professional unless you are a professional yourself is the best bet.” And remember, a Pinterest overload never goes over well. The same planner recommends staying off Pinterest at least WEDDINGBEE.COM one month prior to the wedding. It can be difficult to adjust décor and themes at that stage. You will only end up stressing yourself out if you try to recreate everything on your wedding board, so stick to your favorites while still making your personal vision come alive.
The Thong in the Background The possibility of unplanned wedding guests needs to be addressed when planning seaside nuptials. Visitors flock to the Outer Banks by the thousands each week in the summer, and beaches are open to the public. One area planner said, “I have personally sprinted from the [dunetop] deck all the way out to the beach to stop somebody from either driving behind or walking behind the bride and groom on their first kiss.” Some couples will search for that secluded piece of coastline for their ceremony – and may find it – but the fact is that beachgoers may be present at all of the beaches on the Outer Banks. The key is in the timing. To avoid an excess of sunbathers, surfers, and splashing children, avoid midday if you decide on wedding in the height of summer. Opt for something closer to dinnertime. There is still great natural lighting, which your photographer will appreciate as opposed to the high noon, whiteout look. And there will be a noticeable difference between the quiet, evening stroller on the beach and the couple sporting thongs in the shorebreak behind your wedding arbor.
ELLENTV.COM
The Youngest Guests To be sure, children are the most unpredictable of attendants and guests, often in the most endearing way. A child’s behavior is one aspect of wedding planning that you will likely not be able to control, but you can plan ahead by

taking certain measures. Make sure you know how your little ring bearer or flower girl feels about participating in the ceremony, especially if they are handling the news of a re-married parent. For example, if a child is going to have a speaking part during the wedding ceremony, it is wise to talk it over in advance than to have an unexpected outburst. Be careful if you will have children attending your reception at a vacation home, or anywhere with a pool for that matter. When there are catering tables, chairs, and guests close together, there may not be much room to move around, especially if there is a large guest list. People will be dancing and having a grand time – thanks to you and your planner – and sometimes little ones can take an unintended dip into the pool. This is really a safety warning not just for children, but all ages. It is easy to fall into the pool when trying to slide by another dancing guest or a potted plant. Take precautionary measures by mapping out your reception with ample walking space and by keeping a safe distance between the dance floor and the water. Guests in wheelchairs or using walkers will thank you for planning for them as well.
Sunsets and Sunrises Planning on saying “I do” while the sun sets over the ocean? That is in the realm of possibility if you are wedding near the Pacific. It does not always click right OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM away. You picture the beach – the romantic, pastel drenched sunset over the water – and you forget that we are on the East Coast. The sun rises over the ocean and sets over the sound. If you are expecting the sunset in the background of your wedding ceremony, you should look for a soundfront venue. Photographers can capture the sunset from the beach, but the photos will have sand dunes and rooftops instead of waves as a backdrop. You can always say your vows on the beach and then pick out an attractive soundside location for sunset photos following the ceremony. Or consider the increasingly popular day-after shoot, in which just the bride and groom get together with their photographer the day after the wedding for a more relaxed, intimate photo session. Plan yours on the beach at sunrise for those awe-worthy images. It’s BRAVEOBRIDE.COM a great opportunity to trash the dress as well.
Save the Cake When holding an outdoor reception, leave the cake indoors as long as possible. Temperatures tend to top 80 on a standard day in July. Displaying the cake for all to see is great, but if it means sacrificing the delicately detailed icing, consider revealing the confection indoors at the reception during toasts and tasting. Some cake and icing ingredients hold up better than others in the heat, so ask your baker about different options if this is a concern for your summer wedding. Another aspect to consider if you are planning a wedding in the 4x4 beaches – or another not-so-easily accessible location – is the transportation of the cake. A dessert with meticulously placed tiers will not appreciate the many bumps and bounces associated with driving over dunes. Choose a more durable cake that is not in danger of toppling over, or ask your cake maker to assist you in transportation preparation. When the time comes, should something go not according to plan, maintain your state of grace and focus on the love in the room or on the seashore. Because in the long run, mishaps will make for a humorous story at your 50th wedding anniversary party… at the beach.

GROOM’S GUIDE
BY MICHELLE WAGNER
DANIEL PULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY
t’s not easy for grooms to know how they can help when it comes to wedding planning. While some may want to lend a hand, many grooms may feel a bit lost in a whirlwind of color schemes, flower arrangements, party favors and menu planning. But they can take an active role in preparing for that special day, too, and they may even find they can have a little fun along the way. Many couples split tasks from the beginning so each know what they need to get done. A checklist and deadlines help, and can set the stage for a smooth and productive planning period where both bride and groom know what the expectations are and work as a team every step of the way. A groom’s responsibilities can vary. Traditionally, his duties have included some of the reception arrangements, mapping out the transportation logistics, selecting gifts for his groomsmen, and planning the honeymoon and bachelor party. But that definitely doesn’t have to always be the case, and couples can share tasks in whatever way works best for them. Of course, some tasks may be better suited for the groom and some for the bride, depending on their strengths and personalities. So take the time to consider each of your likes

and dislikes and where you think you may be able to pitch in. Remember, just because you may not be so enthusiastic about labeling invitations, looking at flowers or choosing party favors, these are tasks that must be done and doing them together can make it more manageable and definitely more fun. And don’t forget, it will strengthen your relationship and get your marriage off to a good start.

Pick a relaxed atmosphere for the two of you to sit down and begin mapping out the months that will end with your special day. Create an outline - minute by minute - of the wedding day and what you need to do to make it happen. Enlist your groomsmen and other trustworthy family and friends to help along the way and on the day of the event. Be sure the list includes everything from choosing your wedding bands to giving the best man the rings. Include the deadline you need for tasks to be accomplished as well as any source material such as phone numbers and addresses.
Traditional Expenses of the Groom Just knowing the traditional responsibilities of the groom and his family does not mean it is what you and your partner will decide to follow. More and more couples are sharing the expenses of the wedding and honeymoon. But if you are going the traditional route, grooms typically pick up the tab for the entire rehearsal event including the dinner, invitations, decorations and entertainment. The groom also traditionally pays for the marriage license, the bride’s rings, the officiant’s fee, gifts for his attendants, corsages for the mothers and grandmothers, as well as the bride’s bouquet.
May I Have This (First) Dance? What could be more romantic than suggesting to your fiancé that you take a dance class together? It will help you prepare for your wedding day when all eyes will be on the two of you during that first song. You can play a role in choosing the song for the first dance and other songs the band or DJ will be playing.
When the Big Day Arrives There is a lot to remember on the morning of your wedding day, and it can feel overwhelming. Here is a list of potential last-minute concerns or day-of questions that frequently pop up: • Will your best man have the rings? • Is the honeymoon luggage easily accessible? Do you have a change of clothes accessible for your getaway? • Will your best man return your rental suit for you? • Do you have the notes for your toast or speech? • How will you keep track of car keys and/or house keys during your wedding day? • Most guests know not to bring wedding gifts to the actual ceremony, but inevitably, a few will show up. Assign someone who will be in charge of transporting them to a desired location.
DANIEL PULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY
The Game Plan
• Get passports, credit cards, and phone numbers ready for where you will be staying on your honeymoon • Who will have the checks or cash to pay the musicians, photographers, drivers, and any other professionals who do not get payment until the end of the event? Make sure you arrive at the ceremony site at least a half hour before the service begins. Give the best man payment envelopes so he can take charge of paying everyone after the service. Use this time to go over any special seating arrangements with your ushers and double check that you have the marriage license for the officiant and your witnesses to sign after the ceremony.
Support Your Partner Wedding planning can be stressful. There are plenty of ways you can show your bride-tobe that you appreciate everything she is doing to make your wedding day perfect. Leave a love note inside her purse, pick a wildflower and place it on her windshield, fix her a special dinner or have take-out ready on a particularly busy day. It is also important to be familiar with who will be attending the wedding from her side of the family. You can flip through a family album together or share fun stories about relatives to help connect names and faces.
Play A Little: It’s the Outer Banks The Outer Banks has something for every man, no matter where his interests lie. The coast teems with adventures in fishing, surfing, hang gliding, golfing, kayak tours, and more. In between your wedding festivities, make sure you take time to explore our remarkable environment. TRANSPORTATION
Transportation should never be a last-minute decision and it’s more than just renting a car or limo. There are many details to work out and the party can’t start until everyone has arrived. Be sure transportation details are hammered out well before the big day arrives. Consider using transportation for these events: • Wedding showers • Bachelor(ette) parties • Airport shuttle for out-of-town guests • Rehearsal dinner • Honeymoon getaway • Group guest activities

The biggest reason to consider wedding transportation for your guests is the obvious: drinking and driving. You want your guests to have fun at your reception, but you also want them to arrive at their destinations safely. The legal blood-alcohol limit in North Carolina is .08. That’s just one or two drinks for most people. Plus, how well do all of your guests know the directions to all of your destination wedding venues? Another reason to transport your guests is that parking at rental homes on the Outer Banks is very limited. A typical formula for non-event homes is one parking space per bedroom in the home. Also, parking on the grass can be a costly violation at most homes because of damage to underground septic systems. By providing transportation for guests, you can rest assured that everyone will get to the church (or beach) on time. Remember this tip: Do not wait until the last minute to book wedding transportation. It could cause unnecessary stress and result in confusion and last-minute details to be forgotten. You also need to factor the cost of transportation into your overall wedding budget. When booking your wedding wheels – the earlier the better!

• Research the vehicle that will be assigned to your event and check on how often it is cleaned: A twenty-year-old limo without proper upkeep may not be the luxurious getaway car that you are envisioning. • Always book for longer than you think: It is a good idea to add 20 to 30 extra minutes to each trip to allow for late arrivals and traffic delays. • Always book in person: You can do your research online and talk with companies over the phone, but take the time to make your final booking in person so that you can inspect the vehicle. • Pay attention to the contract: Read the contract thoroughly before you sign. Double check the date, hours, and pick-up locations. Make sure the company is insured, and research their cancellation and refund policies. • Have a family member or friend call the driver 20 to 30 minutes ahead of time to make sure your ride is on the way.

he groom. Poor guy. He’s often overlooked in the wedding plans, but don’t let his haberdashery fall through the ceremonial cracks. It’s okay if you let him hang loose in Aloha shirts over khakis, sporting Wayfarers and Rainbows, or a rented tux, but don’t discount the stylish suit. Rented or owned, regardless of the inspiration, suits have resurfaced in the fashionable mainstream.
a textile for every season For a late spring or summer outdoor ceremony, seersucker suits may turn your wedding day into a great Gatsby. The cool thing about lightweight seersucker is it’s pre-wrinkled cotton in a host of color combinations, classic understated neutrals like charcoal and white, or beige and white. For some added swagger, think about Carolina blue and white, or dandy candy pink and white. Paired with a solid necktie or an open necked white cotton dress shirt, seersucker is not for the faint of heart but could send your heart swooning. Other lightweight fabrics like linen or a stiff bleached chambray will produce a monochromatic canvas for boasting floral boutonnieres and ties to complement your bridal party’s bouquets and sashes. For fall and winter, choose traditional navy gabardine wool or try a luxurious black velvet jacket for a deep December wedding.
tailor made Choose tailoring that’s flattering to the groom’s physique. The three-button front with center vent is a slimming look if he’s a tall drink of water. Not everyone can get away with the doublebreasted, double-vented suit jacket with ease. Only his tailor knows for sure. One dashing look with or without a jacket is the long vest. Double brocades in cream, wheat or beige for spring; pastel blue or celadon for summer; deep russet for fall and dark charcoal for winter will pop with matching ties over white shirts anytime of year.

a little jeuge goes a long way Yes, suspenders are sexy, especially when revealed during the reception when it’s time to loosen the tie and roll up the cuffs for some dirty dancing. Say goodbye to bow ties and hello to silk cravats or skinny neckties in simple solids. Striped tone-on-tone ties are okay too. Complete the look by adding just the barest trace of detail peeking from the breast pocket. A colorful pocket square adds flavor to the look of a two o’clock affair, while a monogrammed handkerchief and engraved monogrammed cufflinks contribute a touch of formality to a four o’clock wedding. Choose a plaid tartan tie if it’s in the bloodline – pastels for warm weather, jewel tones for cold climes – but if he goes plaid, prepare to own it and know you may have to sacrifice other fashion flashes to avoid clashes. If you give the eyes a chance to rest in between his collar and trouser cuffs he could also add a pair of Argyle socks.
tried and true blue In the end, the old adage: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, while intended for brides-to-be, is also just as relevant for grooms. For something old, recreate a vintage look from his parents’ wedding album, and borrow the old man’s studs and cumber bun. If the overall mood of your wedding day is casual, there’s nothing wrong with the ubiquitous blue blazer over white duck pants for summer or even khakis for fall. If you choose this look, try having some fun with the accouterments: try a cowboy hat and Western boots, a bandana tie and a wildflower boutonniere. Let his true personality shine!

The party favor says a lot about who you are and what you stand for, no longer as individuals, but as a couple.

n the age of smoking, it was the match pack, and if you were super cool, the box of wooden matches embossed with your names and the date of your nuptial event. From cozies to food trucks (for the wedding guests that kinda forgot to eat during the reception), the party favor or parting gift has become a wedding budget line item all its own. Regardless of the amount of money spent, the bottom line is this one: the party favor says a lot about who you are and what you stand for, no longer as individuals, but as a couple.
OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM
Comfort and joy If your wedding day falls in a summer month, consider the parasol. Lightweight bamboo and rice paper in hues that echo the wedding theme can produce stylish temporary shade in a sultry outdoor garden. Or consider issuing a wedding program on one side of a paper fan. Hand fans can be scored and folded like an accordion or printed flat and affixed to a balsa wood handle like a fly swatter. For a wedding planned on an early fall evening, the bride may wish to provide lightweight pashmina shawls for her female guests who arrive with bare arms in the heat of the day, only to turn chilly after the sunsets. Beach wedding? Think cotton or fleece blankets for standing or sitting on the sand; or for cuddling with significant others as the festivities continue – perhaps around a bonfire – into the wee hours of the evening. Think about the roots you’re planting for your future when you consider your party favor. Traditional bags of uncooked rice grains – symbolizing fertility – may be supplied for showering wife and hubby as you leave the church or when you flee your reception bound for the honeymoon. Likewise, birdseed will fill the bill while nourishing feathered friends also known as harbingers of long-lasting bliss. The same may be said of offering a healthy pine seedling, balled, burlapped and ready for planting, another symbol of a fruitful future.

Savory and sweet Sachets filled with dried herbs make a great parting gift especially when tagged with a list of the herb potpourri ingredients and each herb’s special meanings. Likewise spices, sugars, salts and teas are considered charms of good fortune for the bride and groom, their wedding party and guests. Bags of Jordan almonds are equally symbolic, dating back centuries to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures. Odd numbers of almonds signify an indivisible marital union. The natural savory almond flavor represents life, while the sweet coating portends a happy marriage. Oversized shortbread cookies glazed with abundant marzipan icing, wrapped in cellophane bags tied with ribbons and a thank you note make simple but cheerful party favors. Glass jars filled with grandma’s homemade cookies are a take-away family treasure, especially for friends. Print her recipe on a card and tie it around the top of the jar with a colorful ribbon and you have something that your guests devour but with practice can refill time and time again. Stage a sweet bar beside the door stocked with edible memories: fortune cookies, wrapped mints and chocolates. Stash a pile of takeaway bags to fill with delicious favors. If your wedding caterer likes to set themed buffet food stations during your reception, ask for a s’mores bar and send your guests home with gift wrapped marshmallows, Hershey’s chocolate and Graham cracker ingredients to make their own at home. It will no doubt provide an added value token of appreciation to be shared with the babysitter or the kids who love to hear about mom and dad’s big night out.
Regardless of how much they imbibe, how long they stay, and how well you can sober them up, there’s no better parting gift than a fleet of cabs, limo service, trolley, or shuttle waiting to escort your wedding guests home to safety.
Onsite Custom Invitation Printing Unity Vases and Candles Wedding Accessories and Keepsakes
Parting gift Offer a chilled, uncorked split of champagne to guests who may want to take the party home with them. Add a gift tag tied with a string and attach a drinking straw; or hire a custom glass artist to paint commemorative flutes for guests to take away with them. For the guests who may have imbibed but forgotten to eat at the appropriate time, hire a food truck and allow the diehards to nosh on pre-hangover grub: beef sliders and French fries are perennial favorites; and no two people will argue over a taco bar. Hangover kits are kitschy and cheeky. Stuff a personalized muslin drawstring bag with equal parts hair of the dog (airline minis), and some travel sized headache relief tabs or powders, Vitamin C, mouthwash, breath mints and peppermint sticks.

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

Venues & Accommodations BY MICHELLE WAGNER
From a beach wedding under cotton candy skies at sunset, to a daytime event with the sun high overhead, the ocean as a backdrop makes any ceremony one of the most romantic ways to say “I do.” But the Outer Banks has so much more to offer couples in venue choices than its magnificent shores along the Atlantic Ocean.
Soundside beaches at sunset, gardens and state parks, enchanting lighthouses, aquariums, or even an iconic fishing pier are all popular wedding venues where couples choose to have their special ceremony. One thing is for certain – while the Outer Banks has some of the most beautiful stretches of sandy beaches, it also has so much more to offer couples looking to tie the knot. When it comes to picture perfect wedding venues and enticing accommodations, the choices are endless.

SITES The Beach There is no doubt the ocean provides the perfect backdrop for a stunning, romantic wedding ceremony. Soft sand, lapping waves, and beautiful sunsets are just a few examples of what lure couples to the edge of the sea on their special day. If you and your significant other are beach lovers and are looking to tie the knot along our shores, know that local towns and counties have jurisdiction over their beaches and access areas. Be sure to check and follow town, county, or National Park Service regulations.
TIP – Parking for guests and vendors during a beach wedding can
Miles and miles of sound beaches also make a beautiful backdrop for an Outer Banks wedding and if planned right, will surely include stunning sunsets. One of the most popular soundside wedding venues is Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. Here on the largest living sand dune on the East Coast, guests are sure to enjoy spectacular views of the ocean and sound. For more information on holding a wedding at the park, call 252-441-7132. A $35 fee applies.
Churches By the Sea If you are looking for a place of worship to exchange wedding vows in, there are plenty of choices on the Outer Banks. From large, spacious churches with reception halls to quaint seaside chapels, couples can take their pick. Remember that many churches require couples to use the in-house minister or priest or may require cer-

he Pine Island Lodge is situated on just over three acres of beachfront property and offers stunning, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound from nearly every angle. The Lodge is styled with traditional Outer Banks architecture and decor in mind, with comfortable, modern amenities seamlessly incorporated into the the design. Step out onto any part of the 16,000 square feet of wrap-around decks and you’re guaranteed a breathtaking experience, whether it’s watching pelicans coasting along the shoreline or the sun sinking into the western horizon. Flexibility and comfort define the interior of the Pine Island Lodge. The top floor great room, dining room, reception hall, and deck can seat up to 300 people while maintaining an intimate feel. The tasteful decor - hues of blue and green paired with local antiques and knotty pine - is subtle enough to pair with nearly any decorating theme while maintaining the classic Outer Banks feel of the home. “We’re traditionalists,” explained one of the owners of the Lodge. “We like the oldschool beach style so that’s what we brought into this house. The dining room tables and chairs were made in Kitty Hawk and almost all of the antiques are from a local family. It was important for us to keep the feel of the house authentic.” Large doors open up to a spacious, wraparound deck with windows that can be dropped down to let the sea breeze in, or kept closed to protect guests from the elements while still offering unobstructed views of the surrounding land and water. The home’s 28 bedrooms are all named after the hunting lodges that once dotted the marshes from Princess Anne County down through Currituck. The rooms are wellappointed, cozy, and comfortable, with attached bathrooms and access to the expansive decks. There are plenty of other spaces on the property where guests can escape to solitude while still being close to the action. Living and sitting rooms are nestled in amongst the larger common areas, allowing for conversations, quiet time with a book, or peaceful reflection while surrounded by the beauty of the home’s natural setting. Amenities abound at Pine Island Lodge. Caterers and chefs will feel right at home in the kitchen, which features state-of-art appliances including a large ice maker, two dishwashers, a spacious range, plenty of refrigerator and freezer space, and of course a keg cooler and well-equipped bar. There are also several wet bars throughout the
house, so a cold drink is never far from reach. Move easily between floors with the help of the home’s elevators - no lugging heavy suitcases up and down stairs! There are 48 televisions throughout the house, with the sets in the common areas capable of receiving wireless live streaming and Apple TV. Speaking of technology, Pine Island Lodge has the fastest internet on the Outer Banks - and that’s not an exaggeration! The speed at the Lodge is 60% faster than the average WiFi connection, which means every guest can connect from multiple wireless devices without any interruption in service. You can livestream your wedding for those out-oftown relatives and friends who couldn’t make it as well as to the televisions throughout the common areas. There’s no such thing as a bad view at the Lodge! Your guests can hashtag the night away and when the party’s over, they won’t have any trouble streaming movies and television or maybe even doing a little remote work if they’re so inclined. The Lodge boasts copious amounts of outdoor living space, including a ground floor lanai with a covered bar, hot tubs, and direct access to the pool. Guests can take advantage of the private walkway leading to the beach, and then after a day of sand, salt, and sun, rinse off in one of the outdoor showers. The first floor game room opens directly out into the pool and bar area, so visitors can utilize the pool table, shuffleboard, fitness room, and theater inside but still be close to all of the outdoor activities too. One feature that really sets Pine Island Lodge apart is the detached bridal suite. This lovely cottage includes a master bedroom with walk-in closet, pedestal tub, wet bar, and private balcony. The suite is the perfect place for wedding parties to prepare for the ceremony and also offers couples a relaxed and secluded getaway for after the festivities end. Pine Island Lodge can accommodate up to 300 wedding guests and sleeps 80 people. With an airport directly across the street, keyless entry, a caretaker on-call 24/7, plenty of overflow parking, and tons of amenities, this state-of-the-art home is perfect for your destination wedding. After all, it’s a vacation! Put your toes in the sand and enjoy your time on the Outer Banks. Pine Island Lodge will keep everyone comfortable and entertained in addition to providing the perfect, authentic backdrop for your big day.

With the Sharks, Under a Beacon, or On the Green Local attractions and historical sites offer more than just entertainment for tourists. Many happy couples are choosing to host their weddings and receptions alongside the very lighthouses or overlooking the same sights where they first fell in love. The clubhouses and dance floors at an oceanfront pier or golf course are especially popular venues, and their buildings offer that back-up plan “in case of rain.” Ceremonies that are immersed in the beauty of yacht clubs, marinas, and maritime forests or among an aquarium’s fish tanks have the added advantage of having a built-in theme and décor. You can also inspire your photographer’s creativity with a boating theme; on the Outer Banks, we have everything from deep-sea fishing boats to a replica of a 16th century English ship available for wedding ceremonies and events.
TIP – There is a $100 fee to host ceremonies within the National Park

The Comforts of Home: Renting an Event House The Outer Banks is known for the abundance of gorgeous event homes that line its shores from Corolla to Ocracoke. These oceanfront homes are built and designed with weddings and receptions in mind. Many feature large decks, spacious gathering areas, gazebos, and wooden walkways that meander over the dunes to the beach. Receptions can easily be held next to your private pool or indoors. Industrial-sized kitchens and large gathering areas both inside and outside make event homes a hit with caterers. Game rooms, wet bars and other features enhance the wedding experience. Occupancy limitations apply, so be sure to check with property management companies.
ACCOMMODATIONS It can be tricky organizing accommodations for your guests and wedding party when you are doing so from out of town. Whether you are taking on the task of finding a place for your guests to stay or just hope to guide them, it’s a good idea to consider having everyone stay close together, whether they are in neighboring rental homes, or all staying in a hotel, motel, or inn. Consider making reservations close to the reception site. Give rental managers and hotel managers an idea of how many guests you expect so they can strive to meet your personal and geographic needs.

Town Rules
| 75
& Regulations
When planning your wedding, a little geography lesson may come in handy as restrictions and permit requirements vary for each of the small towns that dot our coastline. One rule in common: all beachfront communities have banned launching Chinese (or sky) lanterns. Here’s a listing to help you get started on other town-specific regulations. Town of Duck • 252.255.1234
Town of Nags Head • 252.441.5508
There are no public parking lots or public accesses for the beaches in Duck. The Town of Duck requires that any gathering of 50 or more people register with the town’s Department of Community Development at least 30 days before the event. Rehearsal dinners, brunches, and post-wedding parties also fall under this requirement. Registration forms are available on the town’s website.
Since beach nourishment efforts have recently widened Nags Head beaches, the town has doubled the number of chairs allowed on the beach to 40. Tents and canopies are allowed only on private property, and if they exceed 400 square feet, they require an inspection.
Town of Southern Shores • 252.261.2394 It is recommended that the bride and groom shuttle in guests from other locations as there is no public parking available in Southern Shores. Couples can apply for an encroachment parking agreement if they think they may have parking overflow at a rental home. An event permit is required to erect tents or canopies, but there is no fee. Also fires are not allowed on the beach.
Town of Kitty Hawk • 252.261.3552 A $50 outdoor gathering permit is required for groups of 50 or more. If you are planning to set up a tent that is more than 200 square feet, there is an additional fee of $25 for fire inspection.
Town of Kill Devil Hills • 252.449.5300 You may set up chairs and decorations, but no tents or canopies are allowed on the beach. To erect a tent or canopy at your rental home, you must obtain a building permit, but there is no fee.
Town of Manteo • 252.473.4111 A downloadable wedding reservation form is on the town of Manteo’s website and is required to confirm the availability of a time slot for your waterfront wedding.
Currituck County • 252.453.8555 Tents on private property that are more than 400 square feet require a permit and tents or canopies over 200 square feet may require an inspection by the fire marshal. Weddings with more than 100 guests may need a mass gathering permit.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore / Ocracoke Island 252.473.2111 If you are planning to get married on in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore area, you must obtain a permit and pay a $100 fee. While couples are bound to discover solitude and beauty on these beaches, they will need to plan a wedding at a beach access that has enough parking for guests. Also, wedding décor such as flowers, garlands, gazebos, rice, and birdseed are prohibited in the national park. While no formal seating is allowed for a gathering, exceptions are allowed to accommodate elderly or handicapped visitors.

weddings and food!
elebrating these two as one can create an unforgettable experience! As food tends to be one of the most remembered details of a wedding, choosing a caterer is a big decision. Whether you are planning an elaborate affair or an intimate seaside reception, the food and drink you choose to serve your guests will be a reflection of you as a couple, so think about what makes you unique and let that steer your course. Here are a few tips and 2016 catering trends to help you get started!

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM
First Things First: Know Your Budget Identifying your budget is the first step. If you have opted for a full service wedding planner, he or she will now step in to help you throughout the entire catering decisionmaking process. However, if you are doing it yourself or only using the services of a day-of wedding coordinator, (see more about wedding planners on pg.36), grab your groom, your maid of honor, your mom, and anyone else to act as a second opinion and set out to explore your catering options. As you begin, keep in mind that while catering is one of the biggest expenses of a wedding, that does not mean that you have to break the bank to have the reception of your dreams. Local, professional caterers have the creativity and flexibility to make any budget work.
What to Look For in a Caterer OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM
78
The ideal caterer pays close attention to details, and not only to the details that need to be implemented on wedding day but also the details that come long before. The ideal caterer will also expertly guide you through food and beverage choices without being pushy, dismissive, or hard to work with. Local chefs will know what foods and desserts will transport best to your wedding location and what seafood and produce are freshest for your reception day. Your caterer should be experienced enough to confidently, yet unobtrusively, guide you. Do not agree to an appetizer platter that sounds unappealing to you. Whether you are building your menu from the ground up together or you are giving the caterers the space to create a menu on your behalf, make sure they are clear on your budget.
Consider the Season The Perfect Location... ...for Your Special Event Our Private Room is a special location for your rehearsal dinner, brunch or intimate wedding reception. For larger events, the main dining room or the entire restaurant are available. Or, for more casual settings or meet and greets, our front deck and bar would be the perfect location.

Another factor that affects much of your catering decisions is the time of year in which you plan to get married. Will your reception be held outside or inside, early in the evening before sunset, or in the warmer months when the sun is still shining at 7 pm? You would not serve pumpkin brulee mocktails in the summer, nor would it be a good idea to have frozen pina coladas for a winter wedding reception. If you are staging a chocolate fountain dessert table in the winter months, research which fruits are grown locally during your wedding season. A side benefit of being eco-conscious and using seasonal foods for your wedding menu? It will be fresher and tastier. Your caterer will help you discover the best food and drink choices to complement your event.
Establish Your Venue Once your season and budget have been determined, deciding on your venue may determine who you use as a caterer. Getting married at a pier, golf course, aquarium, or other venue that packages in-house catering service is a popular way to make the selection simpler. If you love the setting but would prefer a different caterer, find out if they allow outside vendors. Going with a venue that is a “one-stop-shop” has its perks, as there is less to coordinate and package deals can be more affordable. Be sure to check out online testimonials of your catering service and venue, if available, before making your final decision. You can learn a lot by what past brides have to say about their experiences. Do a little digging and ask around the area to be sure you are getting an accurate depiction of the company’s reputation and performance.

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
Some venues, especially those offering in-house catering services, also supply what is called “day-of coordination” packages. Typically, this includes a briefing for the bride, coordination between the vendors, distribution of the wedding day timeline to appropriate service providers, and some other set up and break down duties that are typically handled by a wedding planner.
Choose Your Style Couples are expanding on the traditional sit-down dinners that are available and becoming edible innovators with fun and spirited nuptial fare. Offering hands-on, interactive serving situations, like food trucks, mix-your-own ingredient stations, beverage bars, and casually passed, easy-to-eat food options, couples in 2016 are transforming the previously known cocktail and dinner hour separation into one extended, casual socializing event.
Late-Night Snacks Late-night snacks like pizza, popcorn, ice cream, or milk and cookies - any of those simple favorites that motivate you to get up from the couch so you could snack while watching a movie at home - are trending this year. Appearing after dinner and wedding cake, the late-night snack will be a pleasant surprise to the friends and family who have the staying power to celebrate into the late-night hours. After many songs on the dance floor and a few visits to the signature beverage table, your guests will praise you for providing another round of food. The after party food selection is also a good opportunity for the bride and groom to put one more personal touch on their menu by offering their guests their favorite food choices.
Stay loyal to local Not that eating healthy is a new concept, but increased awareness about buying and eating local has hit the mainstream. Even if you are from out of town, staying true to the barrier island’s local roots will allow you to serve the freshest ingredients possible while melding a piece of the Outer Banks into your wedding day memories with each

and every bite. Bring the farm to the table with gourmet twists on homemade brews, farm-fresh cheeses, or local seafood. Crossover into the veggie buffet trend and serve up local pickings with home style and seasonally inspired dips. Or try a new twist on the classic pickle tray with a homemade pickle bar featuring locally-grown cucumbers, marinated in different spices and herbs, as well as fiery hot pickled okra and sweet pickled beets for an authentically southern, fresh, and impressive food station. Wedding guests who have travelled to the Outer Banks will, no doubt, expect to sample famous eastern North Carolina barbeque at some point during their travels. Get Creative and Have Fun No matter if it’s the hot new thing this year or a traditional sit-down dinner you’re after, make it fun and make it all yours. No one said your wedding vittles have to fit a certain criteria, so go with the flow and serve up what you feel will complement your unique celebration and the atmosphere you wish to create. And don’t worry, everything’s always better at the beach, so if you’ve chosen the Outer Banks to host your special day, rest assured you’re already off to a great start!

Catering Trends for 2016 Late-Night Snacks
A second food service is great for evening weddings and after parties when you want your guests to be able to refuel and head back to the dance floor.
Love it Local
An increased preference to buy local, organically-produced foods is sweeping the country. Fresh farm meats, seasonal ingredients and just-harvested vegetables are showing up at weddings in 2016.
Interactive Eating
Instead of having the traditional cocktail server walking around with trays of prepared food and drink, a hot new trend this year is an interactive approach. Guests walk up to an oyster bar or guacamole bar and watch the chef shuck and muddle their appetizer right before their eyes.

Everyone’s heard of a signature cocktail; others are choosing specialty teas, espressos, fresh-squeezed limeades, or fruit and herb-infused waters.
Food is both presentation and taste, so combine the two to present some of your favorite simple foods in extraordinary ways. Think meatloaf and mac and cheese served in their own ramekins.

hen it’s time for your wedding reception, it’s time to leave all the stress of planning behind you. After all, the reception is a celebration of your new life together. And one of the best ways to enjoy it is to relax in knowing you’ve taken care of all the details. Perhaps one of the biggest details in reception planning is how to approach the bar tab. From offering an open bar to just a few memorable signature drinks or having just beer and wine, there is always a creative solution that can meet your budget while keeping you and your guests happy. Considering all your options and finalizing details before the drinks start pouring will ensure that you can leave your worries behind and enjoy one of the biggest and most special parties of your life.

2016 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS
Industry statistics reveal that couples spend an average of $2,800 on alcohol or approximately $16.50 per guest. With that in mind, it is worth looking at areas where you can be creative and save while still offering a party everyone is going to enjoy. Online alcohol calculators and wedding planners can help you estimate how many bottles to purchase to avoid waste. With careful attention to the bar tab, you can be sure that your reception will go off without a hitch and will be an event you will remember for years to come.
RACHAEL HYDE PHOTOGRAPHY

The Best Bar for Your Budget Open Bar An open bar is a very generous offering but can end up being very costly. Be prepared. It allows guests to order any drink available and as many as they want. While it may be popular among guests and caterers, one shortcoming is that it promotes a lot of waste as guests sample drinks they normally would not order - or they lose track of the drinks they have knowing that they can just order another one. With an open bar, there is no telling what the tab will be when the reception ends, so if you are on board with that concept, let the party begin. But keep in mind an open bar can easily account for 10 to 20 percent of your reception expense. One way to still have an open bar but save on expense is to offer a set selection of drinks – such as just wine and beer. Or perhaps only offer one signature mixed drink. Couples have the option of setting time limits on when the bar is open, which can go a long way in keeping you within your budget. Hiring waiters to bring drinks around or limiting serving times around a specific cocktail hour before dinner can also help to keep the budget manageable.
TIP: Don’t serve drinks in large glasses. Smaller portions usually mean less consumption. As a general rule, people tend to count the number of trips they make to the bar, not the ounces consumed. So with smaller glassware, your guests will be happy while you save on your bar bill.
DIY Bar
If you are going with a Do-It-Yourself bar, the general rule of thumb for every 100 guests is: two cases of beer, three cases of wine and a case and a half of champagne. Two fifths of popular liquors such as vodka, scotch, bourbon, whiskey, and rum are usually enough.
Cash Bar
One option to consider is a cash bar, which is a less popular choice for guests but can save the wedding couple a lot of money. TIP: Start the party early. By simply switching your wedding and reception to earlier in the day, you can reduce alcohol consumption and spending greatly. Brunch weddings are becoming more popular, not only for the menu variety but also because they allow you to serve less expensive Bloody Marys and mimosas.
Bring Your Own
One way to pare down your bar bill is to find a venue where catering and alcohol are not bundled in with your contract so you can provide your own alcohol. This arrangement will also allow you to taste the fare from the Outer Banks’ unique breweries and wineries. Many of these places offer discounts when buying in bulk, so be sure to shop around.

Skip the Bar
Of course, if your families do not drink alcohol, there is the option of skipping the bar altogether. Regardless of how you decide to serve alcohol, fun, nonalcoholic drinks should be available for the under-21 crowd, designated drivers, and other guests who do not drink.
Cocktail Hour and Signature Drinks
Some couples choose to limit the cocktail hour to 45 minutes rather than the entire reception. Wedding experts estimate that most of the drinks at a wedding are consumed in the first two hours, so limiting the cocktail hour can help trim your budget. Also, couples often find that guests switch to wine with dinner, leaving the more expensive mixed drinks behind. Always consider using bar brands instead of top shelf liquor. If you have a large number of beer drinkers on your guest list, consider the cheaper option of kegs instead of bottles. Kegs can be hidden discreetly behind the bar. TIP: Plan your cocktails based on the season. Having a winter wedding? Manhattans and martinis are a must. Serve up Shandies and Pimm’s Cups in the summer or gin and tonics for spring weddings. If your guest list is small enough, you could survey your friends and family to find out what their favorite drinks are and offer a small selection of those.
Follow the Rules
Professional caterers and restaurants hosting weddings need to have a permit to sell and/or serve alcohol at your wedding, but it is up to you to make sure that part of the process is legally covered. Some reception sites require that you purchase your own permit to serve alcohol at their venue; other venues will automatically take care of the permit and pass that expense on to you. If you are providing your own alcohol and purchasing large quantities at an ABC store, the ABC store will issue a purchase/ transportation permit at no charge that allows you to purchase and transport the larger amounts of liquor from the store to your site. To acquire a permit or obtain more information, call the state ABC Commission at (919) 779-0700. OUTERBANKSPRODUCTIONS.COM

Liability Insurance?
If you are concerned about guests having too much to drink and getting into an accident, consider adding a liquor liability endorsement to your wedding insurance policy. You can also arrange for safe transportation back home by providing a fleet of cabs, limousine service, or a shuttle like OBX Trolley’s “Stella.” There is a lot to consider when developing a plan for the bar at your wedding reception. Careful planning and consideration of your wants and your guests is the key to making this part of the party a piece of cake when your wedding reception begins. ♥

Today’s wedding attire options are virtually endless, so whether your style is elegant or effortless, you should take the time to explore the most popular ways to make your beach wedding unique – hand in hand with your toes in the sand!
or some, necklines are going high and backs are dipping low as brides embrace the hottest new trends while adding their own personal touches to make their special day suit their personality, individual style or waterside location. Multiple layers and textures are prominent themes because they are romantic and flow so well with combinations of soft fabrics like chiffon, organza or tulle. No matter the style or the budget, there is a dress out there for you. Wedding dresses can be classified into silhouettes, which basically refer to the outline and shape of the dress from the neck and shoulder down to the hemline. The best-known silhouette or wedding dress style is the A-line, also known as the princess dress. With the A-line, there is a fitted bodice that defines the waist with the rest of the dress falling gently to the ground. This classic dress shape looks good on almost any figure. Another silhouette is the sheath – popular with brides who are hoping to keep things simple. Simple does not mean boring, though. An elegant sheath dress hugs the body nicely and gives the bride a sleek and sophisticated look. A mermaid shape is an unforgettable silhouette. It remains formfitted throughout the bodice and hip and then flares dramatically outward beginning at the thighs or knees. In terms of color, some designers are moving past champagne and ivory in favor of moodier blues, grays, and greens - perfect for the watery tones of the beach! Also, tulle over-skirts give brides extra volume for the wedding ceremony as well as a built-in glamorous reception dress underneath. For a little bit of tradition and a whole lot of romance, lace will surely make your groom’s heart flutter. From naked lace and embellished backs to fashion-forward crop tops and sun dresses, lace epitomizes what it means to be the bride. Lace set on a nude underlay is a modern twist for antique and fragile lace. When looking for a lacy gown, focus on the silhouette of the dress first, and then find the lace details you love most. The key when choosing a dress is to think about the length, the fabric, and how both fit with the type of wedding and reception you are hosting. Many beach brides want to make their splash in more casual attire, some opting for a short or tea-length dress, perhaps made from a gauzy material that will dance in the ocean breeze. White and ivory are always going to be in fashion, but two-tone wedding dresses also remain popular and are a great option if you still

want a predominantly white dress. If you would like to experiment with color, try coral or poppy – fantastic hues for a seaside ceremony. Trends range from white to splashes of color. Brides are incorporating their chosen hues in a number of ways – from shoes to jewelry to hairpieces and even the groomsmen’s ties. If you’ve always imagined yourself the blushing bride, get literal. No colors are sweeter and more prominent than pink or peach blush. Experiment until you find the color that flatters your skin tone best. While the dress will set the tone, windswept fabric, beachy colors, and playful details add whimsy and flair to your style.
Many bridesmaids are wearing short dresses with different styles but of the same color or varying shades of the same hue. Some brides are even having their attendants wear off-the-rack sundresses in complementary colors. Dresses inspired by the beach’s hues are popular: coral, beige, aqua, and foam. Tip: All of your attendants have unique shapes and styles. Why not pick a color and fabric and ask them to choose the rest? Today’s bridesmaids are spending a lot of money to be a part of your special day. Consider a dress that they can repurpose and wear again. Perhaps your maids choose the styles and even colors that work best for them. Maybe they can mix up the necklines with a variety of oneshoulder, strapless, halter, or sweetheart gown styles? Or they could each wear a different color from your choice of color palette (like aqua, olive, and turquoise)? What if they choose their own dress in a specific hue? Many designers have developed dress lines for just this purpose, so you can get many different cuts in exactly the same shade. The name of the game in bridesmaid fashion is coordinated but not matchy-matchy.

The Groom and His Men
Even at the beach, some grooms are likely to go for the traditional tuxedo. With its clean details and lines and defined shoulders, the tuxedo suggests a sense of confidence without trying too hard. Others gents are changing things up a bit. Being a stylish groomsman has a lot to do with what is being worn under the jacket. For a semi-formal look, a popular trend is tuxedos with long (cravat) ties, vests instead of cummerbunds or a three-button jacket paired with a non-pleated shirt. Some groomsmen are opting
for light gray or tan suits instead of tuxedos. They may also go for slacks and blazers and match the overall color scheme with a stylized pocket square, old-school bow-tie, belt, or their socks. Reflecting a casual beach theme, the less formal groom and his groomsmen can look smashing in Hawaiian-print shirts and khaki shorts. Or they can pair the khaki shorts with an untucked oxford shirt. Starfish boutonnières and fun socks that peek out beneath their formal long pants are a popular way to mix casual and formal. Flip flops and bare feet are okay for beach weddings, too.

Veiled hats can make any wedding dress feel so chic. Veils by themselves are lovely but veiled hats tend to make a bigger, more original fashion statement. Wear this style with a sleek bun or low side ponytail to evoke a bygone era. Crystal studded headbands, accessories and jewelry run the gamut and can be individualized to suit the bride and groom. Pearls mixed with a little bling remain popular – perhaps a bracelet paired with a simple necklace and dangly earrings or simple earrings with a chunky necklace. A rhinestone sea star hair clip can add sparkle to the day and reflect your beloved beach setting. Sashes graced with a flower, splash of color, or bling are another trendy accessory. Pocketbooks or clutches are ever popular on artsy websites like etsy.com and can make wonderful attendant gifts for your wedding party. The perfect accessories will, of course, accent the wedding gown and attendants’ wear and will often incorporate sentimental items – something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue! Another trend is to pair brightly-colored shoes and other accessories with white bridal gowns. Consider an amazing pair of bold blue shoes. Cobalt or beach blue will pop in photos and navy blue keeps things classic, while pastels lend a vintage vibe. There is also a vast array of footwear for those who want to be comfy and casual but don’t want to completely abandon their style. Of course, footwear is optional on the beach, but sandals can be fun too – from feminine flip-flops adorned with pearls to sandals with crystals and rhinestones that delicately drape the ankles and feet. However you decide to attire the wedding party, remember that it is your day to plan and make all your own. Show off your style as a couple so you and your guests will remember your big day for years to come. Today’s wedding couple is embracing surprises galore and novel nuances – which is great because you do not have to adhere to a strict set of dress codes.

Planning your wedding is a fun and exciting period of your life, but it can also be a stressful one. Knowing what
2016
Trends
is trending and what is not may help as you decide what is right for you and what isn’t. Here are just a few of the hottest new trends to hit the wedding scene in 2016.
BY MICHELLE WAGNER
If you are that easygoing, fun-loving couple, then you’ll go head over heels about this wedding trend that is topping the charts this year. Bohemian weddings are in and that means bright colors, flower crowns, lace bib tops, and plenty of mixed patterns and textures. Lowered tables, as well as plenty of lighting, are popular among couples as well. Perhaps the biggest feature of bohemian weddings is found in the flowers. These can be used to brighten up the venue using old vases. Hang the vases from the ceiling, or put flowers on tables and floor. When it comes to bohemian dresses, freedom mixed with natural is the way to lean. Most of these style dresses are loose and comfortable. For the groom, a casual suit usually does the trick, or you can go for a bohemian style shirt to add a nice touch. Top it off with a hat and moccasins.

Free-spirited? Go Boho
This year, brides are adding a simple but classy touch to their wardrobe by slipping on headbands that include everything from flowers and jewels to feathers and lace. Versatile, these accessories suit every hairstyle, whether the bride has long, flowing hair, a short clean cut or an up-do. Brides are going with glittery or bohemian style or anything in between. Headbands are taking the place of veils and bridal tiaras, but if you still chose to wear a veil, it’s a perfect accessory and serves brides well when the veil comes off during the reception.

Unique Shots Drones aren’t just reserved for hobbyists and casual use. More and more photographers are turning to them to record every possible angle during your special day. Aerial shots capture oneof-a-kind glances from above as your exchange vows and allow photographers to really capture the amazing scenery that is inevitably part of your Outer Banks wedding. While they may not be the cheapest option, if you are looking for those unique shots to remember your wedding day, they might be worth considering. If so, be sure to consider all the safety concerns as well as ensuring you have an experienced pilot guiding the drone. Speaking of recording those special moments of your day, some videographers are also using Go Pros to complement their camera assortment. With the help of a selfie stick, Go Pros can result in some otherwise hard-to-get creative shots – whether it’s you and your guests out on the dance floor or other totally candid shots of the wedding reception and ceremony.

Brides will be walking down the aisle this year with bouquets that are long and overflowing with color and beauty. Many are complementing their bouquets with an earthy touch, such as wool in winter. Flower crowns are big this year too, especially if you are going for that bohemian theme on your special day. Another trend you are sure to see is hanging lights which include floral arrangements. This popular combination always creates an elegant look. Brides are also adding texture to centerpieces by using hydrangeas, roses, peonies and ranunculus. Looking for a way wear some flowers? Brides are also adorning gowns with leaves, vines and colorful petals.

Want a Taste?

Tasting stations are replacing plated dinners and other formal dining settings this year. More and more couples are opting for these by offering guests little bites of menu items. If you want to combine the formal and informal, try having a plated salad first and then move on to stations for the main meal and dessert. Couples are also offering small servings of specialty drinks and mini portions of beers and liquor. Get ready for everything from oyster shucking stations to taco bars and more. Don’t be surprised to see a food truck or two show up at the next wedding either. Whatever you decide to do with your menu, there are plenty of options this year’s couples are turning to in order to give their reception a little twist.
Rustic and earthy is back in style as couples are choosing to return to nature. You will see this with more natural tones such as browns, grays and greens. Green floral arrangements are popular and if you want to get creative look for ideas like lanterns filled with flowers. Lots of candles always add to the rustic, earthy feel. Simple is the key. Rustic weddings are featuring cakes with simple icing. The cake is then surrounded with items found in nature. Using mason jars at the reception is a hot new trend and can be used for anything from centerpieces to reception glasses. Repurposed furniture, old crates and barrels and rustic doors, chests and benches are all popular at the rustic wedding. Burlap drapes will give your reception an earthy touch. Mixing calicos, plaids and floral when choosing tablecloths, runners and linens is also popular.

Opting for Opulence The opulence that made up the weddings of the 1920s and 1930s is making its way into the bridal scene in 2016. Think white glove weddings with bold colors and banquet-style tables overflowing with fruits and foliage. Couples are going all out when it comes to decorating, dress codes and venues. This year’s weddings will likely see themes centered on popular decades as well. Wedding ceremonies and receptions are bound to see plenty of decadent indulgence. Brides will be showing off plenty of pearls, chiffon, and lace and may even resurrect old vintage pieces from their great grandparents keepsakes – such as headpieces, those old-fashioned sandals and other heirlooms.
Many couples find creative ways to incorporate family heirlooms into their wedding day. From using linens and antique silver serving pieces that belonged to their grandparents or parents to a piece of lace from your mother’s wedding dress to a family ring, there are countless ways to bring your family’s heritage to your special day. If you like the idea of including a family heirloom, consider using heirloom jewelry – perhaps a string of your mom’s pearls or a piece of her special jewelry. A family brooch in your hair is also a nice touch. Another way to bring family heirlooms to those moments you don’t want to forget is to use family china or silver pieces at the head table. Maybe one of your moms even saved her cake topper that you could use on the cake, bringing together the old and the new.

Sprucing up the Getaway Car
Ending the Night with a Bang Really looking to wow your guests and have your special day end with a spectacular show? Some couples are hiring professionals to orchestrate a fireworks display during their wedding celebrations. While it can be a costly undertaking, if your budget allows it you may want to shoot for the stars and end the night with some color and sparkle. If considering such a display, you’ll need to check with the municipality in which your wedding is being held to learn the laws that govern fireworks and what permits you’ll need. You will also have to talk to local fire and police departments. Another good place to start gathering information is the American Pyrotechnics Association. There’s plenty to consider if you want fireworks to be part of your day, such as safety of the guests, the venue and clean up. But the sky should be the limit. After all, it’s your wedding day!

Now that the wedding and reception are over, it’s time to head out and begin your new life together. Flowers, cans or wording on the car, along with personal touches that speak to you, are all part of what couples are doing these days. If you are going with flowers, smaller arrangements can fit easily on door handles and larger ones are popular for the hood or back bumper. And instead of the traditional cans tied to the back bumper, many couples are opting to replace them with plastic bottles. And when it comes to messages on the car, the trend seems to be “go with personalized.” Be creative by including the bride and groom’s name and even private jokes or seasonal items. A beach wedding even lends to the possibility of dressing up the car in a beachy theme or one that goes along with your wedding theme. Window and body decals are also a popular choice, resembling a professional paint job but are easy to take off and also become wedding keepsakes. While it’s fun to know what is trending on the wedding scene, don’t let it rule your special day. Make your wedding a reflection of you and your new life together. Weave in the trends that appeal to you and leave the rest behind.

it is always a good idea to plan some form of childcare at the reception to keep the youngsters engaged and not tugging on the adults’ legs. The babysitter’s table should be fortified with games and entertaining activities, but there should also be a sitter hired to keep an eye on them. However, do not be surprised to see that the younger children – under 4 years or so – may still want to stay close to their parents during the reception. The reality is that younger children will often have more fun if a professional is hired to plan post-ceremony children’s activities that will focus on their own enjoyment. By not expecting the junior bridesmaid or ring bearer to also put on their best behavior for every wedding event, you will ensure more relaxed fun for all guests. Photographers will have to work hard to capture a child being natural – and not figety – in photographs. One local photographer states that “I have to worry about getting the shots of the kids as quickly as we can, ideally right after the ceremony.” He continues, “We plan to do kids first, because they don’t last.” When the ceremony is at the beach, it can make the photographer’s job even tougher as children tend to be especially distracted by the waves and the birds. Consider using the beach as part of your prop and photograph all the children in wedding attire putting the finishing touches on a sand castle together. Looking for a way to introduce sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews from both sides of the family to try on their new role as extended family members? Involve them in different roles to assist at the ceremony and reception. A few tasks for children include handing out programs, assisting with the guest book, and seating guests. One creative couple appointed their youngest family members as junior photographers after the professional was finished taking her posed photographs. The couple was delighted to find out that they ended up with a few more spontaneous shots of their guests having fun at the reception – and from very different angles! Local ministers and officiants can help you avoid the flower girl / ring bearer cliché while adding children to a new, blended family with sensitivity. One symbolic way to include the entire family is to expand the traditional unity candle ceremony. Instead of having only bride and groom taper candles on the altar, additional taper candles are provided to represent each child in the family. At the point where the bride and groom light the central, unity pillar with their single tapers, the children join in and all participants are lighting the same pillar with their own flame. You can also consider a beach version of the unity candle ceremony: the sand ceremony, in which each person has a vessel containing a colored sand they chose; they each take a turn to pour their sand into a single vessel as a symbolic uniting of the entire family. Again, not all children want to take part in their parents’ wedding ceremony; sensitivity dictates how much or how little they are asked to participate.

Your Pets OF

ou’ve recruited your parents, best friends and even some long lost cousins to join the wedding party, but what about your furry family? Making your pet a part of your wedding can complete the day and ensure everyone you love is there to celebrate. Pets come with special considerations, especially if you plan on holding your wedding and/or reception on one of our beautiful beaches, at a local venue, or even your rental house. There a lot of logistics that go into planning a destination wedding; it only takes a moment to ensure your pet’s needs are taken care of along with the other members of the wedding party.

A Role to Play
You love your pet enough to want them to be a part of your wedding, so give them the role they were meant to play. If your animal is calm and can join the ceremony, allow them to walk down the aisle dressed in a bowtie or with a garland of flowers, have them sit where guests arrive with a sign welcoming them, or allow your pet to be the ring-bearer. Own a high-energy pet? Perhaps you can have them join you after the ceremony for photos or at the reception when everyone’s cutting loose. Honor the memory of a pet that can’t be present with a photo at the reception or a special mention in the program.
Plan Ahead
You know your pet better than anyone – they’re your furry child. Don’t throw them into the wedding weekend without a little prep work. You’re going to be busy, so make sure you have one or two guests assigned to look after your pet so your munchkin gets properly walked and fed, medications are administered, and a bed is properly set up while you’re getting ready. And just like every bride needs lots of water on the big day, so does her pet. A beach wedding can get hot!
Don’t Forget the Small Stuff
Make sure to inform your wedding party and guests that a pet will be present as some attendants may have allergies to consider. Also, think about your pet’s health at your ceremony – many plants and flowers are toxic
Leash Laws
Every town and every private venue on the Outer Banks will have their own pet policy. When holding a wedding in a public park, a privately-owned venue or any commercially-owned business, you must check with that entity before planning your ceremony. One thing to remember no matter where your ceremony takes place - clean up after your pet! Bring waste bags with you and dispose of them properly.
A partial list of local townships’ animal control laws.
In Corolla, dogs are allowed on the beach and at the Whalehead Club’s Heritage Park year-round on a leash. Dogs are welcome on a 10’ lead throughout the Town of Duck, including the boardwalk, Duck Trail, and the Park, all of which make excellent photo locations. Yearround, dogs may be on the beach without a leash, as long as they remain under the watchful eyes of their owner and return when commanded. For a Southern Shores wedding, please keep your pet on a leash at all times. While welcome anytime of the day or night in the off-season, dogs are only permitted on the beaches from 6 pm – 9 am May 15th through September 15th. In Kitty Hawk, from the Friday before Memorial Day to the day after Labor Day: 6 pm to 10 am dogs must be on a 12’ lead and 10 am to 6 pm on a 6’ lead. The rest of the year, however, Fido may run on the beach leash-free as long as he stays within 30’ of his owner and returns when called. Pets must be kept on a leash at all times in the town of Kill Devil Hills. While dogs are welcome any time of day in the off-season, they are only permitted on the beach from 6 pm – 9 am from May 15th through September 15th. Pets are welcome at any Nags Head beaches and parks anytime as long as they are on an 8’ leash. Hatteras Island beaches (including Rodanthe, Waves, Avon, and Salvo) allow dogs, except on designated swim beaches, as long as they are kept on a 6’ leash.

Accommodations
Before you book your venue, rental house, or hotel, check to see if the beaches and walking paths near you are pet-friendly. Vacation rental companies have their searchable databases for pet-friendly homes. Most pet homes allow for one or two adult dogs with an additional pet fee which can typically range from $95-$150. Fees and cleaning costs will vary depending on the rental company, the number of pets, and each particular homeowner, so it is best to research before finalizing your rental. When it comes to your reception, consider holding it at your rental house or under a tent at a pet-friendly beach. Most Outer Banks restaurants and public venues will only allow service animals.
if eaten, and hot sand can burn the pads of an animal’s feet. Consider assigning someone to pet-sit your little buddy to ensure they stay clear of catering staff, food tables, and the dance floor. As the night wears on or the music gets louder, your pet-sitter should have the house keys to allow your pet an escape. And just like you want your photographer to get candid shots of your family and friends, remind them to capture a few images of your pet joining in the fun.

Nielsen - Novak Wedding planner, Kerri Catino-Nason of The Proper Setting, was particularly proud to be a part of Lisa and Matt’s wedding. “It was one of those weddings at the end of the season that was just so beautiful and perfect – it reminded me of why I do this.”
Choosing an Out of the Way Escape “We were looking for an outdoor location which had the ability to have a multi-day event as all of our family and friends would be traveling to join,” says Lisa. “While the [Outer Banks] is not the easiest place to get to (primarily from New York and Iowa), it was a perfect getaway. Staying here allowed our 55 guests to spend a few days away on vacation and created an intimate, fun atmosphere.” Adds Catino-Nason, “Lisa and Matt made this a very intimate, private wedding. They had a completely unplugged wedding because they wanted their guests to be present and in the moment.” Even when the wedding ended, the party continued into the night. “With a smaller guest count, you worry if the party is going to be as fun. But that party never stopped! I think they asked DJ Bruce to stay late into the night.”
Braving that Unpredictable Outer Banks Weather “The week started out unseasonably warm, but a storm was on its way.” Lisa and Matt were prepared, “We brought in outdoor heaters to try to account for the dropping temperatures that day, but the wind had another plan. After holding the ceremony, cocktails, dinner (our guests were able to change into warmer clothing easily), and our first dance under the stars, we moved into the event space at the Wild Horse and had a great time dancing next to table lamps we brought in from the rest of the house.”
Making Family a Part of the Day Lisa’s uncle, Ralph, performed the ceremony – he married her parents over 30 years ago. Matt and Lisa, along with Uncle Ralph, crafted the entire content of the marriage ceremony. Catino-Nason: “They wrote their own ceremony, including a knot-tying ceremony-it was really beautiful. The guests were so excited for Lisa and Matt. Matt’s face was priceless when Lisa came out, it was that moment that was really touching. Everyone was so happy for them!”
Blending In, Not Standing Out “Matt and Lisa did an amazing job integrating the setting of the Wild Horse into every part of their wedding,” says Catino-Nason. “A driftwood arbor for the ceremony on the beach; driftwood on the farm tables for the reception, which were set up on the top deck for dinner under the stars. They did such a nice job; they didn’t compete with their surroundings, they made the landscape part of the day. Matt and Lisa really thought about their guests and made sure that the wedding was the crowning moment of their week at the beachthey gave their guests the best of everything.” Which included the food. “The food was excellent! Lisa and Matt chose to emphasize seasonal fare, such as a dinner of pork with apple butter and pumpkin pie on the dessert bar.”
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff Lisa has this sage advice for future brides: “It sounds clichéd, but don’t worry about all of the details – it will all work out in the end. Hire a wonderful planner who will do all the worrying for you and figure out how to make changes for unplanned events. Thanks Kerri!” ♥

Gerau - Magliocca A Winter Wonderland Engagement “We had gone to John’s parent’s home in Rochester, NY for Christmas. It was Christmas Eve and John asked me if I wanted to go for a walk to see the Christmas lights around his neighborhood. The snow really began to come down and it was just beautiful. I started to get cold so we began to head back home. As we walked up the driveway, John started wiggling his hand from mine and stopped. I turned to see what he was doing and he was on one knee. He told me that he had just one question for me, would I marry him? I jumped about a foot back, nodded my head and told him of course I would. His entire family knew what he had planned so when we walked inside, his parents and sister were waiting with champagne. It was one of the most amazing moments of my life.”
Choosing the Ideal Location “John and I…knew that we didn’t really want the traditional style of wedding and wanted something simple as well as relaxing. We actually found the Sanderling by Googling OBX wedding venues…We knew immediately that it was the place we wanted our marriage to begin. It is a calm, relaxing, and tranquil area combined with unencumbered beauty. Additionally, you get amazing food and kind-hearted locals who seem happy to be where they are. As a visitor, you can’t replicate the immediate ease you feel once you cross that bridge. All of those qualities were something we really wanted to be associated with our wedding and marriage.”
Combatting the Elements “The morning of the wedding, we woke up to rain. Debbie, our wedding coordinator, promptly came to us with a contingency plan; however, she promised to hold out until the last possible second before moving it indoors. The weather magically cleared off just in time for the ceremony on the beach. As soon as we finished pictures, it began to pour and the staff was prepared to make sure that John and I got to the reception without a drop on us. By the end of dinner, the sky had cleared yielding the most beautiful sunset John and I had ever seen.”
Honoring Those Who Couldn’t be Present “My stepfather passed away suddenly a month before our wedding. He meant so much to John and I; we wanted to find a way to honor him. At the beginning of our ceremony, each of our guests was given a rose and during the ceremony our minister said a few words. We walked down to the ocean and paid homage to him.”
That Personal Touch “Our wedding vows reflected us as a couple and included a reference to one of our favorite activities together, watching the Buffalo Bills. I wore my grandmother’s jewelry which was given to her by my grandfather on her wedding day. I wore a veil and headpiece that were designed by my mother’s childhood friend and veil designer, Toni Federici. Our guest book consisted of bucket list suggestions which we have promised to fulfill sometime throughout our marriage. We thought it would be fun to give our friends and family a means by which they could throw in some suggestions [for our marriage]. Our wedding favors were cookies from the Country Club Bakery in my hometown in West Virginia.”
Advice for the Brides “I would advise other OBX couples to relax and enjoy the moment. Remember why you picked the beach and why you chose to spend the rest of your lives with one another. John and I took [a moment] right after our ceremony to relish in what we just did. The Outer Banks holds a certain ethereal quality and makes a truly magical landscape for your big day.” ♥

Foster-Wittig - Harvey A Very Special Engagement “We were moving Scott out to Oklahoma and stopped in Asheville at the Triple Falls in DuPont State Forest Park. Scott told me to go by the waterfall and get a picture with our dog, Zane. I noticed right away that something was different – [Zane] had a new collar with a bow tie on it. When I looked down to check that his name tags were on, I saw a heart tag that said ‘will you marry me’ on the front and the date (July 18, 2014) and place on the back. I turned around and Scott was on one knee with a ring. For our wedding day, we had an identical tag made with our wedding date (June 26, 2015) and Nags Head, NC on the back and ‘I DO’ on the front. Zane wore this and the new bowtie collar down the aisle.”
DIY to the Nines “All the table numbers were hand-crafted and had to do with facts about us as a couple with a picture of us. Scott 3D printed our cake topper based on a silhouette of one of our engagements photos -- we are kissing and Zane is standing between us. Most of the decorations were made by me, Scott’s sister, or Scott’s mother. We painted corn-hole sets and made starfish boutonnieres, wood signs, and our own bouquets. Scott’s father built a drift wood sign post with directions to the ceremony, reception, etc. We home-brewed two different types of beers that we put our own custom labels on (engagement picture of us) and special custom bottle caps (Harvey Homebrew). These were served at the welcoming table at the ceremony and during the reception. We also had cups made for people to use and also take home. Scott’s sister, Ginger, made these amazing programs that had fun facts about Scott and me on them. We were able to save money by designing our own programs. Scott’s mom had three painted wooden boats made by a local artist that we used to display the drinks.”
Making it Personal “Scott, his family, and I worked hard to make everything very personal. The bouquet flowers were based on a bouquet Scott got me for my birthday that year. We had a photo booth which was a huge hit! It had a little logo at the bottom of each picture that said ‘Scott and Tierney.’ Scott and I chose “Happy Together” by The Turtles as our first dance. The lyrics “so happy” and “together” are engraved in our wedding bands, and our chairs at the reception had hand-painted signs with these lyrics. “We were going for a good, relaxed, Southern feel so we got BBQ for food and had a pig pickin’ with lots of local craft beers as well as our homebrews. Leon Nixon (Edenton, NC) catered the food. For our guest transportation, we rented a pontoon boat that ferried our guests from their hotel across the sound to the wedding and back. We hired two local fishermen to captain the boat.”
Advice for the Big Day “Spend the time to make the wedding your own. I had so many people come up and tell us how special the whole day felt for them. The little touches make a difference and didn’t cost a lot. Also, relax and let others help with the planning. Scott’s sister and mom were a huge, huge help and made the day incredible. One thing we might have done differently was get help the day of setting everything up. It was a very long, stressful morning getting everything together, even with all the help of family and the wedding party.” ♥
