MARRIAGE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS for Outer Banks Weddings

Not to detract from the romantic element of your wedding, but the fact that marriage is a legal contract cannot be ignored. And with the many overwhelming details that must be attended to, the necessity of applying for a marriage license may easily fall through the cracks. To ensure that your joyful union is an official one, attend to the required paperwork to obtain a marriage license and check this important item off your to-do list before you say, “I do.”

T

here are 100 counties in the state of North Carolina. A marriage license can be obtained in any one of those counties, and that license can be used to get married anywhere in the state. However, be aware that each county office may differ in regard to required documents for application. You may check county websites to determine specific requirements.

ALL THREE COUNTIES

The three counties on the Outer Banks are Currituck, Dare, and Hyde. These counties share the following marriage license requirements: • Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds Office to apply for a wedding license. • There is no waiting period for the license. The license may be used from the moment it is issued. However, marriage licenses are valid for only 60 days after they are issued. The application will be invalid if you apply after your ceremony has taken place. • No appointment is necessary. • A blood test is not required. • The fee is $60. • There must be two witnesses to the ceremony – whether it is civil or religious. For specific requirements regarding each of the three Outer Banks counties, read below:

DARE COUNTY

A dedicated page on Dare County’s website allows couples to complete and submit their marriage application before they visit the county office. Expect to spend about 30

Documents to bring with you: • A valid government picture ID that includes your dates of birth. • Social security card or any other official paperwork with your social security number listed, such as a W2 form or pay stub. • Divorce decree with judge’s signature if your divorce was less than a year ago. If your divorce was more than a year ago, you just need to be able to list the date of the divorce on your application. • If either of you is under 21, certified birth certificate is required. Those under age 18 will need more affidavits and should consult the website or Register of Deeds office directly, prior to going. The Dare County Register of Deeds office is open weekdays from 8:30am – 5pm, but applicants should arrive no later than 4:30pm. Although Monday is their busiest day, other days between noon and 2pm are fairly busy as well. Payment methods: Cash, checks, money orders or credit cards (with a 2% surcharge). The Hyde County Register of Deeds is open weekdays, 8am – 5pm. Marriage license applicants should arrive no later than 4pm. Payment methods: Cash only.

The Currituck County Register of Deeds Office issues marriage licenses from 8am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Payment methods: Cash, money order, or personal check.

Once your minister, magistrate, or officiant has announced you and your beloved officially married, it is their responsibility to sign your marriage license and return it to the issuing county office within 10 days after the marriage ceremony. It is important to note that marriage certificates are not automatically mailed out to newly married couples. You must request an official copy of your certificate after the wedding ceremony. To obtain a certified copy, download the request form from the appropriate county’s website and follow the mailing instructions. The charge for each copy is $10. While you’re perusing the county websites, it is a good time to check on any additional permits or restrictions regarding your wedding festivities, especially if you are planning an on-the-beach ceremony. The national seashores, public beaches, and lighthouses each have different regulations regarding outdoor ceremonies. Scroll through their websites to see what they have to say about tents, chairs, arbors, etc. ♥

After all, one of the best things about a wedding is making your guests happy, and few things make people happier than good food and drink.

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

Wedding catering decisions can seem difficult to make, considering the range of choices and palates to please. But for that same reason, much can be done with a lot of options. Elegant, sit-down dinners, casual buffets - and everything in between - all have one thing in common: your choices reflect your “couple personality” – your taste and style; your sense of adventure, playfulness and/or tradition; even your thoughtfulness. It’s important to think about what makes you unique and let the food and drinks take it from there. Here are a few tips and 2019 catering trends to lead you in the right direction.

First and Foremost: determine Your Budget

An obvious requirement before making any decision is to calculate how much money you can spend on a caterer. If you have hired a full-service wedding planner, he or she will be able to walk you through the entire decision-making process, from appetizers to dessert. Do-it-yourself couples, or even those with just a wedding-day-only coordinator, need to tap into the skills, advice and experience of anyone willing to act as sounding board – moms, brothers and sisters, friends, grandparents, whomever. Then the serious investigation can start. Catering is one of the biggest expenses of a wedding (usually accounting for about 25 to 30 percent of a couple’s budget), but even if a reception is done on a modest scale, it can still be wonderful. Professional caterers, familiar with the local choices, have the skill and creativity to make any budget work.

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

What to Look For in a Caterer

A professional caterer will need to tend to many details leading up to your wedding to ensure that your dream day runs smoothly. The ideal caterer will provide guidance on food and beverage choices in a respectful and non-aggressive manner, leaving enough room for you to feel comfortable in your decisions. Outer Banks chefs are well versed on what foods and desserts will transport best to your wedding location and what seafood and produce will be the freshest for your reception day. Your caterer should be able to confidently advise you on the best options available to you that fit your budget, but should not be pushy about it. Do not agree to do things just to please the caterer, such as serving appetizers that strike you as unappetizing. Whether you are working closely on the menu with the caterer, or giving him or her free range on choosing the menu items, make the limitations of your budget very clear.

LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

Consider the season

Catering decisions will be greatly influenced by the time of year in which you plan to get married. The time of day is nearly as significant, especially considering an outdoor wedding reception. Will it be held in the early evening before sunset, or on summer evenings, during sunset? What about season-appropriate cocktails and desserts – say, coconut in the summer, pumpkin in the fall? Try to have locally available produce, seafood, and even flowers match the wedding season. A local caterer is a great asset in identifying the freshest seasonal foods for the wedding menu, which in turn will provide more flavorful, Eco-conscious food. With your caterer’s help, you can discover the best food and drink choices to complement your wedding event. SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

Establish Your VEnuE

After you’ve figured out when and how much, you’ll want to decide where. Getting married at a pier, golf course, aquarium, or other venue that packages an inhouse catering service is a popular way to make the selection simpler. What if you love the location, but prefer your own caterer? The first step is to ask if the venue would allow an outside vendor. One-stop-shopping has its advantages, such as affordability and less need to coordinate, but it’s not worth it if you want to use your own caterer, and your budget allows it. Needless to say, check for online testimonials about the catering service and venue you’re thinking of using, if available, before making your final decision. Some reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt, but more often they provide valuable insight into other bride’s experiences. It also helps to dig a little and ask around in bridal forums, or even with local wedding industry folks, to get an idea of reputations and service. Some venues, especially those offering in-house catering services, also supply “day-of” coordination packages. These usually include a briefing for the bride, coordination between the vendors, distribution of the wedding day time-line to appropriate service providers, and various set-up and breakdown duties that are typically handled by a wedding planner.

ChoosE Your stYlE

Nuptial fare has expanded in recent years beyond the dinner and buffet tables to options providing innovative and fun dining experiences. Food trucks at a wedding reception? Yes, ma’am! Then there are beverage bars, mix-your-own ingredient stations and hand-held food options such as burgers. Couples in 2019 are transforming the previously known cocktail and dinner hour separation into one extended, casual socializing event. But not to worry, the classic tradition of a sit-down dinner is still most popular and will no-doubt be the choice for most brides in 2019 and beyond.

latE night snaCks

Evening weddings may merit a second food service, as would a party that could benefit from a refueling before guests rev up again for the dance floor. The trend has become a welcomed addition in the later hours of wedding receptions. Guests appreciate having the favorite late night snacks available to munch on, such as pizza, popcorn, ice cream or milk and cookies. Provided after wedding cake has been served, late night snacks will be a pleasant surprise to the friends and family who have the energy to celebrate into the late-night hours. After many hours on the dance floor, and numerous visits to the signature beverage table, your guests will thank you for your thoughtfulness in serving another round of food. And the after-party food selection is another opportunity for the bride and groom to put one more personal touch on their menu by offering guests their favorite “munchies” food.

Local and organic foods are being purchased in increasing amounts by consumers across the country, so it is logical that the move towards healthier, fresher food would find its way to wedding reception tables. Farm-fresh meats and seasonal fish and produce – even local honey- are more evident at weddings in 2019. With increased awareness of the health benefits of fresh, unadulterated food, even partying wedding guests appreciate the availability of nourishing food on the menu. Fortunately, the Outer Banks offers a wide range of interesting local options for food and drink that can enhance a range of cuisines while giving guests’ taste buds the pleasure of experiencing authentic coastal North Carolina fare. Guests can enjoy dishes made with local farm-raised beef, organic eggs, and depending on the season, sweet potatoes (Eastern North Carolina produces about two-thirds of the nation’s sweet potatoes!) corn, collards, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, tomatoes and much more. Of course, the Outer Banks is famed for its locally-caught shrimp, flounder, tuna, crabs and oysters, among tons more fresh seafood. Although most fish species are caught off the barrier islands during specific seasons, often a variety of fresh-frozen fish is available throughout the year. Staying local is also easy on the alcoholic beverage front with four local micro-brews and a rum distillery, as well as at least two area vineyards. And yes, there are several local bakers who can whip up delicious traditional desserts such as Ocracoke Fig Cake, sweet potato biscuits, or peach muffins. The Outer Banks is surrounded by counties with lots of farmland – Currituck, Hyde, and Tyrrell – fresh local produce is available much of the wedding season, giving the term farm-to-table legitimate bragging rights. Newly popular veggie buffets, for instance, can readily feature local pickings with home-style and seasonally appropriate dips. Even the classic pickle tray can be localized with cucumbers, beets, and okra from local farms, marinated in locally-grown herbs and locally-made vinegar and fired-up with local hot peppers, giving your guests a true southern experience with a northeastern North Carolina regional twist. And needless to say, wedding guests who may have traveled to the Outer Banks will expect to be treated to the famed eastern North Carolina barbeque. So why not find a way to include the fingerlicking favorite at one of your wedding events? Its vinegar base is unique to the region and is the subject of many debates comparing it to BBQ in other parts of the state and the southern and western U.S. – and our version is at the top of the list for many barbeque fans.

Go For Brunch: Bloody Mary’s or mimosas, anyone? Yes, it shouldn’t come as surprise that the growing popularity of brunch on weekends has transited to the wedding season. Not only is daytime wedding less costly than evening affairs, the blended breakfast-lunch is beloved by practically everyone. Omelets, pancakes, biscuits, bacon, sausage and eggs – served at the table or at stations — how could you go wrong with a menu like that? Add some gourmet coffees, chai tea and a few smoothies, and pretty much every guest would be happy. People enjoy watching food prepared, such as guacamole or gourmet sandwiches, and the experience is becoming a popular alternative to the circulating trays of appetizers during cocktail hour. Wedding tables are also becoming less formal, with “conversational” tavern-style seating a popular option to foster friendly chats among guests.

lanning your wedding reception doesn’t have to be stressful, but approaching it with a sense of fun can make a huge difference. But even with all the excitement of planning everything from the decorations and menu items to entertainment and party favors, you’ll need to be sure to take a practical approach that is within your budget. Sticking to a budget, coupled with careful planning, can ensure that you can have the reception you want without breaking the bank. Deciding on how you will handle the bar tab is one of the biggest decisions you may make during the planning process. That’s because it not only has a significant impact on your wallet, but it also impacts your guests. There are several options to consider when choosing the right bar offerings for your wedding. But rest assured there are creative ways to approach it that will leave you and your guests happy during what is sure to be the best party of your life. While your guests may love an open bar, it can cost couples an average of $2,800, or $16.50 per guest, according to recent statistics. For many, that’s just not financially feasible. If it fits your budget, then cheers! If not, consider some of these alternatives. And don’t forget that online alcohol calculators and wedding planners can help when it comes to estimating how many bottles you’ll need to purchase so you cut down on unnecessary expenses. Whatever option you go with, paying careful attention to the bar tab can ensure that your reception will go off without a hitch and will be an event to remember for years to come.

The Best Bar for Your Budget Open Bar

An open bar is a very generous offering but can end up being quite costly. Be prepared. It allows guests to order any drink available and as many as they want.

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

POP BY MICHELLE WAGNER

While it may be popular among guests and caterers, one shortcoming is that it promotes a lot of waste as guests sample drinks they normally would not order – or they lose track of the drinks they have knowing that they can just order another one. With an open bar, there is no telling what the tab will be when the reception ends, so if you are comfortable with that, let the party begin and the drinks flow. But keep in mind that an open bar can easily account for 10 to 20 percent of your reception expense. One way to still have an open bar but save on expense is to offer a set selection of drinks – such as just wine and beer. Or you can consider offering only one signature mixed drink. Couples also have the option of setting time limits on when the bar is open, which can go a long way in helping you stay within your budget. Hiring waiters to bring drinks around or limiting serving times around a specific cocktail hour before dinner can also help to keep the budget manageable.

TIP: Don’t serve drinks in large glasses. Smaller portions usually mean less consumption. As a general rule, people tend to count the number of trips they make to the bar, not the ounces consumed. So with smaller glassware, your guests will be happy while you save on your bar bill.

DIY Bar

If you are going with a Do-It-Yourself bar, the general rule of thumb for every 100 guests is: five to six cases of beer, three and a half cases of white wine, two cases of red wine and a case and a half of champagne. As for liquors, consider one liter of bourbon, whiskey, and tequila; six liters of vodka and two liters of scotch and rum. Of course, don’t forget the mixers as well. The benefits of a DIY bar, such as a brunch-time Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar, is that you can buy the ingredients in bulk – which obviously saves on the bill.

Cash Bar

One option to consider is a cash bar, which is a less popular choice for guests but can save the wedding couple a lot of money. While it’s not typically good etiquette to have a strictly cash bar, sometimes there just isn’t a choice. Letting your guests know in advance that there will be a cash bar in place will help them plan accordingly in having the cash on hand.

TIP: Start the party early. By simply switching your wedding and reception to earlier in the day, you can reduce alcohol consumption and spending greatly. Brunch weddings are becoming more popular, not only for the menu variety but also because they allow you to serve less expensive cocktails.

Bring Your Own

One way to pare down your bar bill is to find a venue where catering and alcohol are not bundled in with your contract so you can provide your own alcohol or use an outside source. This arrangement will give you the opportunity to offer your guests favorite local beverages from the Outer Banks’ many unique breweries and wineries. Many of these places offer discounts when buying in bulk, so be sure to shop around.

Follow the Rules

Professional caterers and restaurants hosting weddings need to have a permit to sell and/or serve alcohol at your wedding, but it is up to you to make sure that part of the process has been legally covered. Some reception sites require that you purchase your own permit to serve alcohol at their venue; other venues will automatically take care of the permit and pass that expense on to you. If you are providing your own alcohol and purchasing large quantities at an ABC store, the ABC store will issue a purchase/ transportation permit at no charge that allows you to purchase and transport the larger amounts of liquor from the store to your site. To acquire a permit or obtain more information, call the state ABC Commission at 919.779.0700.

Liability Insurance?

If you are concerned about guests having too much to drink and getting into an accident, consider adding a liquor liability endorsement to your wedding insurance policy. You can also arrange for safe transportation back home by providing a fleet of cabs, a limousine service, or a shuttle like OBX Wedding Trolley, “Stella.” There is a lot to consider when developing a plan for the bar at your wedding reception. Careful planning and consideration of your wants and your guests is the key to making this part of the party a piece of cake when your wedding reception begins. ♥

Skip the Bar

Of course, if your families do not drink alcohol, there is the option of skipping the bar altogether. Regardless of how you decide to serve alcohol, fun, nonalcoholic drinks should be available for the under-21 crowd, designated drivers, and other guests who do not drink.

Nicknaming Your Signature Drinks

Signature drinks have become a popular item with brides and grooms these days, and many couples have opted to nickname these drinks to add a special touch and a little extra fun to cocktail hour. Whether you decide to tie your wedding theme into the name, incorporate your own personal nicknames or be creative with wedding phrases, it’s always fun to brainstorm with your partner. Remember to consult the bartender and do a little research before settling on a name. Once those creative juices start flowing, you never know what you may come up with!

Cocktail Hour

Some couples choose to limit the cocktail hour to 45 minutes rather than the entire reception. Wedding experts estimate that most of the drinks at a wedding are consumed in the first two hours, so limiting the cocktail hour is one way to trim your budget. Also, couples often find that guests switch to wine with dinner, leaving the more expensive mixed drinks behind. Always consider using bar brands instead of top shelf liquor and don’t rule out batch cocktails such as punch to cut down on costs. If you have a large number of beer drinkers on your guest list, consider the cheaper option of kegs rather than bottles. Kegs can be hidden discreetly behind the bar.

TIP: If you are serving cocktails, plan your menu based on the season. Having a winter wedding? Manhattans and martinis are a must. Serve up Shandies and Pimm’s Cups in the summer or gin and tonics for spring weddings. If your guest list is small enough, you could survey your friends and family to find out what their favorite drinks are and offer a small selection of those.

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

hildren are the embodiment of love and joy for life, and their presence at a wedding can enrich the celebration of family and connectedness. Even beyond the cherished roles as flower girls, junior bridesmaids and ring bearers, children can add so much to a dream wedding. Their freshness and genuine appreciation for time-honored rituals make them natural participants in a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. Young ones, with their spirited spontaneity and innate sweetness, can also contribute unscripted heartwarming, or even humorous, moments that can enhance their sense of belonging and the couple’s joy in sharing with family and friends. Many couples enjoy having children participate, especially in the actual wedding ceremony. And the kids are usually thrilled to be treated as a special part of the rite. Even if the bride and groom desire children at only part of their wedding, there are numerous creative ways that the young guests can still be welcomed. It just takes some careful planning.

LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

We are all familiar with the dedicated ‘kids’ table at the reception. Time-honored and age-appropriate games and activities, of course, should be provided to keep the young ones happy and occupied. But make sure they’re extra-appealing, not messy and with no small parts. It would be a nice touch if the activity or toy could have a connection to the wedding, such as a flower coloring book that matched the bride’s flowers. Sometimes, even with a children’s table, coordinators say that there is no guarantee that some kids will not get bored or become restless. That’s why it is always a good idea to provide some form of childcare at the reception to keep the youngsters engaged rather than tugging on the adults’ legs. The babysitter’s table should be fortified with games and entertaining activities, but there should also be another sitter available to keep an eye on wanderers or cranky ones. Pre-school-age children, however, are likely to want to stay close to their parents during the reception. Good wedding photographers work hard to capture a child being natural – and not fidgety – in photographs. One local photographer says, “I have to worry about getting the shots of the kids as quickly as I can, ideally right after the ceremony.” He continues, “We plan to do kids first, because they don’t last.” When the ceremony is at the beach, it can make the photographer’s job even tougher as children tend to be especially distracted by the waves, birds, and open spaces. Consider using the beach as part of your prop, and photograph all the children in wedding attire putting the finishing touches on a sand castle together.

When it comes to a second marriage, other needs and relationships come into play when deciding how to include children in the ceremony. Some officiants will let the children of a newly blended family sign the marriage license as a gesture. However, it’s hard to always anticipate how a child will react. Before giving children any significant roles in the ceremony, it is important to be sensitive to how they are handling the news of their parent getting re-married. One unexpected outburst occurred when a groom’s son was asked for his “I do” during a part of the ceremony. “But you’re not my mother,” was his response picked up during the videographer’s filming of the vows. Whether it’s fun or formal roles, involving sons, daughters, nieces and nephews from both sides of the family can help them feel part of the newly extended family. Involve them in different tasks to assist at the ceremony and reception. A few rewarding jobs for children include handing out programs, assisting with the guest book, and seating guests. One creative couple appointed their youngest family members as junior photographers after the professional was finished taking her posed photographs. The bride and groom were delighted to find out later that they ended up with a few more spontaneous shots of their guests having fun at the reception – and from very different angles! Local ministers and officiants can help you avoid the flower girl or ring bearer cliché

while adding children to the blended family with sensitivity. One symbolic way to include the entire family is to expand the traditional unity candle ceremony. Instead of having only bride and groom taper candles on the altar, additional taper candles are provided to represent each child in the family. At the point where the bride and groom light the central, unity pillar with their single tapers, the children join in and all participants are lighting the same pillar with their own flame. You can also consider a unique beach version of the candle ceremony: the sand ceremony, in which each person has a vessel containing a colored sand they chose; they each take a turn to pour their sand into a single vessel as a symbolic uniting of the entire family. Again, not all children want to take part in their parents’ wedding ceremony; sensitivity dictates how much or how little they are asked to participate. But sometimes, the reality is that younger children will often have more fun if a professional is hired to plan post-ceremony children’s activities that will focus on their own enjoyment. By not expecting the junior bridesmaid or ring bearer to have to put on their best behavior for the entire wedding event, you will ensure more relaxed fun for all guests. ♥

Beauty Tips for the

Bride

t’s your wedding day – of course you want to look your best. There’s a lot to think about as the big day inches closer, but relax. We’ve got you covered when it comes to the hottest new tips and advice when it comes to ensuring that you look picture perfect from head to toe. From hairstyles and makeup to manicures and tan lines, there’s no doubt that there’s a lot to think about. But heed some of our advice below and spend more time enjoying the moments of your special day than fussing over the details!

THE MAKEOVER

OUTER BANKS PRODUCTIONS

|

Beauty experts caution that it’s always best to take the time in the months leading up to the wedding for a few trial runs when it comes to makeovers. It makes sense to schedule a few so that you can get all your experimentation out of the way and come up with the best plan for the big day. Brides will be happy to discover that many makeup artists offer these as part of your wedding day package. But even if you are doing your own make up, you’ll want to experiment in order to find what looks and feels the best. To get an idea of how your make up will look with your dress, experts suggest wearing a white t-shirt during the trial. And of course, it’s always good to consider how your make up will look in wedding day photographs. Remember to ask your make-up artist for the right shades of lipstick and eye shadow so you can apply touch ups during the wedding day. And remember, eyebrow shaping should always be done a few days before the wedding so they won’t end up looking red and irritated on your big day. And don’t forget the common sense steps you can take the months leading up to your big day, such as treating yourself to regular facials and drinking plenty of water for fresh-looking skin. Foods high in vitamin A, B6 and C all lend to healthy skin. Think watermelon, grapefruit, and broccoli, just to name a few!

Quick Tips: • Go easy on the blush. It’s your wedding day, so you will likely spend the day looking more flushed than usual. Apply sparingly. • Go waterproof. That goes for everything from your foundation to your mascara. There will be at least a few tears of joy. • Go oil-free. If you are having an outdoor wedding, or even if your wedding is during a warmer time of year, use oil-free products and keep blotting sheets on hand. • Go gloss free – that is if you are having a wedding outside. You don’t want that sticky gloss to end up being a magnet for your hair. SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

30

HAIR BASICS The choices are endless when it comes to hairstyles and finding that perfect hairstyle for your wedding day can take some time. Find one that reflects your personal style and most importantly, have fun as you narrow down your search. Once you have, it’s time for a trial run.

OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM

It’s important to schedule a trial run with your stylist four to six weeks out. When you go, be sure to bring pictures of the styles you love and be open minded and willing to experiment. It’s also a great idea to bring a photo of you in your wedding dress, or at the very least a swab of fabric. And don’t forget your headpiece during your trial run. Your stylist will need it!

Quick Tips • Trim and highlight or color your hair two weeks before your wedding. • Always consider the neckline of your dress when choosing a hairstyle. • If you plan to wear an updo, it’s best to wash and blow dry your hair the day before your wedding day. • On the day-of your styling, wear a button-front shirt or a robe so you don’t have to pull it over your head when putting on your wedding dress.

N A I L S M AT T E R ! While nails may not seem like a priority when it comes to the all the details of preparing for your wedding, think again! Remember that all eyes are going to be on the ring that has just been placed on your finger, or the photographs of you signing your marriage certificate. The polish you choose is important and it’s worth remembering that certain shades look better on certain skin tones. So, just like your hairdo, or make up and your dress, your nails deserve attention, too. It’s important to have several trial runs when it comes to choosing the perfect nail polish. Consider avoiding bright colors, not only because they stand out a little too much during those intimate moments of your wedding day, but they also don’t turn out well in photographs. Neutral colors and simple designs when it comes to nails are sure to add beauty and elegance on your wedding day. Gel manicures and pedicures are trending these days as well because the polish doesn’t chip, even after your wedding day is over. Don’t wait until the day of to see

| 31

how you like gel manicures. These should be done at least a day before your wedding, perhaps two.

Quick Tips: • Don’t fret over a chipped nail on your wedding day. It’s not the end of the world, and in the end, it will be the last thing you remember from your wedding day. • To get your nails in tiptop shape before your wedding day, apply cuticle oil every night to nourish your nails.

A SUN-KISSED BRIDE Yes, you are at the beach and you have a few days to have some fun in the sun before your wedding. You want to enjoy the sun, surf and sand like everyone else. After all, that’s why you chose the Outer Banks, right? But be wary. The sun’s rays, even when it’s not summertime, can burn, especially in our beach environment, and it’s no fun dealing with a sunburn (and strap lines) on your wedding day. If you do find yourself a little too sun kissed before your big day, don’t fret too much. There are some things you can do to soothe the burn, or at least make it less noticeable as you walk down the aisle. • Use aloe. This plant-based gel acts to soothe redness and burns, creating a cooling sensation. • Consult and trust your makeup artist. They can add color to white areas, blending them with the sunburned spots. • Prevention is key. Wear SPF 30 and reapply often. The sun’s reflection off the water and sand make you more susceptible to sunburn while trying to relax on the beach the days before your wedding. There’s a lot to remember when thinking about how you want to look on your wedding day but you can be sure that you are going to take your partner’s breath away! Just consider these simple tips, and many others you are sure to find while surfing the web, and you can put all your worries behind and enjoy your special day! ♥

W

edding music is the heart and soul of the celebration, and the repertoire deserves thoughtful and careful preparation. Selected songs must be carefully orchestrated to fit the mood of each part of the wedding: whether playing in the background, flowing seamlessly between the ceremony and the cocktail hour, or pumping up the dancers. From the recessional to the last dance, music is the soundtrack of your important day. Whether you hire one entertainer to provide the music from beginning to end, or a combination of a string quartet, DJ, and live band, you will have different musical approaches to consider to keep the right tone and energy during different parts of the wedding.

CEREMONY MUSIC Most weddings follow a basic music script for the ceremonial part of the wedding, give or take some personal touches. Typically, music is played at selective times during the marriage ceremony and then as the newly joined couple begins their wedding march. Imagine: Your guests start arriving to the site you’ve chosen for your ceremony. As they’re being seated, music floats among the whispers and soft laughter of the friends and family who are being seated in joyful anticipation of the marriage ceremony. As the

wedding party makes their entrance, the music becomes more distinctive, drawing the audience’s attention. Then with a dramatic change in the music, all eyes move to the bride who is making her grand entrance. Music helps amplify the emotion of the ceremony, but it also serves as guide.

Is It Live…or DJ? Classically trained musicians are generally more expensive because of their high level of skill and education. The chosen pieces can require new arrangements and of course, many rehearsals. So although the musicians may be on the scene for a brief period, there is much time spent in preparation prior to the wedding day. Live bands may be easier on the budget – though they can be just as skilled as the classical players – but they cost more than a DJ. They may have a particular style of music – say, Dixieland jazz or Top 40 – or they may play a wide variety of genres. While their list isn’t always as far-reaching as that of a DJ, live bands usually are willing to attempt familiar songs on the spot. Typically a bandleader will ask the couple to choose songs from a set list, and the band picks from them during the reception. Professional DJs each have their own programming style that defines what songs they play at what time they feel is appropriate. Thanks to digital music, most have a nearly limitless selection of music at their fingertips. A good DJ is familiar with a wide range of wedding event music, and fits the songs to the mood. They are often able

to showcase the musical tastes of the bride and groom as well as play reliable crowdpleasers that will get guests out on the dance floor. Some DJs also act as a Master of Ceremony and provide their own brand of entertainment. Be sure you ask about a DJs style to make sure it’s a good fit. Also inquire if they are up on the latest releases or have older favorites in their mix, if that’s your taste.

Outdoors or Inside? The big variable is the venue: beach, backyard, or church? Despite the challenges, an outdoor Outer Banks wedding is often a dream come true. Couples choosing to marry here generally pick the casual beach wedding over a church setting. Depending on the setting, weather can be a huge factor in the quality of the music. Reed and stringed instruments, for instance, do not fare well in extreme temperatures or salt air. Vocals or instrumental music may be drowned out by noisy winds. Electrical equipment can be shorted out by rain or, heaven forbid, lightning. Even with nice weather, acoustics can be difficult to control outside. It is important to have a backup plan in the event of

SARAH KEENAN CREATIVE

bad weather. Local couples or those looking for church weddings may choose from many houses of worship of different denominations here on the Outer Banks. If the couple chooses a church wedding, they may have the option of hiring the in-house organist or using pre-recorded music. Wherever the venue, some couples like to provide their own music selections for the DJ from their MP3 player or iPod.

RECEPTION MUSIC Cocktail Hour As the wedding transitions from the solemnity of the ceremony, music for the first hour or so at the reception venue should be upbeat but non-intrusive, fostering conversation and setting the mood for a party. Often the cocktail music will be focused on jazz standards, but pop music also can work well. There is a growing trend of couples choosing more pop-rock songs over traditional music, as well as instrumental versions

of songs from groups such as The Piano Guys. Many times the musicians, DJ, or live band hired for the reception can also play during the cocktail hour. Some live bands will have their keyboard player, guitar player, and vocalist play “unplugged” or acoustic music for both the ceremony and the cocktail hour. They reunite with the rest of the band and rev it up later for dancing. If the band is adaptable, it can provide a nice transition that guests will enjoy, and it may be more affordable than hiring different musicians for different parts of the wedding. Similarly, classically trained musicians hired for the ceremony (which can include trumpet, cello, violin, viola, vocals, flute, and/or guitar) can also play livelier music, usually jazz, during the cocktail hour.

First Dances SARAH KEENAN CREATIVE

Typically, the couple selects the songs for the “first” dances. A bandleader or DJ often can help the couple pick out the song that fits their relationship. Recent local trends are leaning towards contemporary favorites such as “Perfect,” by Ed Sheeran and Beyonce, and “Tennessee Whiskey,” by Chris Stapleton. Other favorites include another Sheeran song, “Thinking Out Loud,” “Better Together,” by Jack Johnson, and “Die a Happy Man,” by Thomas Rhett. Of course, there are still the standard favorites like “Wonderful World,” by Louis Armstrong and “My Girl,” by the Temptations. If it is a live band, the band makes sure they all learn the chosen songs before the date. Many musicians also are very willing, usually for an additional fee, to arrange a new song provided by the bride.

Here is where the fun really steps up, and the couple can relax and join in the festivities without having to worry. A festive wedding can be just about guaranteed with a great band or DJ, who often serve as the glue for the party. Experienced bandleaders and DJs know to keep tabs on the caterer, the photographer, the family and the guests to ensure things roll the way they should. Real pros read the crowd and adapt the music accordingly. Dancing, both slow and fast, can be inspired by how a skilled DJ or bandleader tailors the music, adjusting appropriately when the younger folks out-number the older folks later on in the party. Most recent popular dance tunes for the reception, according to three local DJs, include “24k Magic,” by Bruno Mars, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” by Justin Timberlake,” and “In My Feelings,” by Drake. The classic, “Shout,” by The Isley Brothers remains at the top of list of favorites, as does “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough,” by Michael Jackson. A last song chosen by the couple is a sweet way to close a great gala and leave the guests with wonderful memories.

After Party You may be changing both your venue and your music if you have planned an afterparty. By switching locations, you can arrange to gather at a club where there is live music or request reserve seating. You can also hire a DJ to be ready and waiting at a new location. If you opt to stay put, couples often change the music to suit the late night crowd. From the first note to the last dance, music has the magical ability to loosen up guests, introduce favorite songs and sentiments, and rhythmically seal your union.

A N E N T E R TA I N M E N T C H E C K L I S T What Musicians & DJs Want the Bride and Groom to Know…

• Not all song requests may be appropriate for the crowd or the mood. Respect the expertise of the professionals you have hired.

Live music performers: • Can you accompany vocalists?

• A “do not play” list can be restrictive.

• What are your equipment, power, and space requirements? Have you played at this venue before?

• It is not always possible to perform outside on the beach, especially in high wind and rain. Always have a backup plan in place for outdoor weddings.

• Do you have a set list from which you work? Will you provide a copy?

• Even if you are willing to pay for overtime, the venue may not allow it. Check ahead of time if you have the option keep the party going.

• Are you willing to learn special songs that are not on your set list? Is there an additional fee?

• Happy guests make a great party, so always keep them in mind when choosing the music.

DJs: • Do you offer additional entertainment beyond playing music?

• Trust the professionalism of the musicians or DJ in reading the crowd.

• What is your policy on playing overtime? Is there an additional fee?

• The more trained/experienced the musician, the more he or she is worth.

• Are you open to taking requests from the wedding party and/or from guests?

• A phone or in-person consultation is much better than email in helping the entertainer get to know your taste and meet your expectations.

What the Bride and Groom Should Ask… Musicians & DJs: • What is your musical specialty, background and experience? • Do you charge by the hour or the event? • Do you have references?

For outdoor weddings: • What is your policy in bad weather? • What is your cancellation policy? • Do you offer discounted rates on weekdays or off-season dates? • How far in advance do you need to be booked?

Churches By the Sea

If you want to exchange wedding vows in a place of worship, you’ll be delighted by all the choices on the Outer Banks. From large, spacious churches with reception halls to quaint seaside chapels, couples can take their pick. Remember that many churches require couples to use the in-house minister or priest and may require certificates of pre-marital counseling. Additional requirements may also apply for visiting couples, so be sure to contact the church directly and keep the lines of communication open throughout the planning process.

Tip – It’s a good idea to contact the church early not only to make reservations but to be clear on what their particular requirements are. That way, there won’t be any surprises in the final days of planning!

The Beach

There is no doubt that the ocean provides the perfect backdrop for a stunning, romantic wedding ceremony. Soft sand, lapping waves, and beautiful sunsets are just a few reasons why couples are lured to the edge of the sea on their special day. If you and your significant other are beach lovers and are looking to tie the knot along our shores, know that local towns and counties have jurisdiction over their beaches and access areas. Be sure to check and follow town, county, or National Park Service regulations. Check out obxbeachaccess.com for details on all local beaches.

Tip – Parking for guests and vendors during a beach wedding can be tricky, so it deserves some careful thought. Rental cottages have parking spaces that are based on the number of bedrooms in a cottage, and towns have some regulations regarding parking at various beach accesses. Consider hiring a trolley or van to shuttle guests to and from your ceremony.

Soundside Ceremonies

Miles and miles of sound beaches also make a beautiful backdrop for an Outer Banks wedding and if planned right, will surely come with some stunning sunsets. You’ll discover many, many spots along the sounds of the Outer Banks that are arguably the most romantic and serene venues here. Be sure to have fun and explore all the beautiful spots when looking for just the right venue.

Under the Sea, Under a Beacon, or On the Green

Remember there is more to the Outer Banks than just miles of beautiful shoreline. Other local attractions and historical sites are popular wedding venues. Many happy couples are choosing to host their weddings and receptions alongside the very lighthouses or overlooking the same sites where they first fell in love. The clubhouses and dance floors at an oceanfront pier or golf course are especially popular venues, and their buildings offer that back-up plan just in case of inclement weather. Ceremonies that are immersed in the beauty of yacht clubs, marinas, and maritime forests, or among an aquarium’s fish tanks, have the added advantage of having a built-in theme and décor. If you’d like your wedding day to be actually on the water, the Outer Banks has that, too. Everything from deep-sea fishing boats to a replica of a 16th-century English ship holds special appeal to all the water-loving couples tying the knot on the Outer Banks.

Tip – There is a $100 fee to host ceremonies within the National Park Service property. Please keep in mind that receptions are not permitted on these properties and regulations apply. If you wish to apply for a wedding permit, visit www. nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/wedding-permits, or call 252.473.2111.

The Comforts of Home: Renting an Event House

If the idea of sharing your special day in a gorgeous event home appeals to you, the Outer Banks has an abundance to offer. You can take your pick from a wide array of

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

beautiful homes that are available from Corolla to Ocracoke. These oceanfront homes are built and designed specifically with weddings and receptions in mind. Many feature large decks, spacious gathering areas, gazebos, and wooden walkways that meander over the dunes to the beach. Receptions can easily be held next to your private pool or indoors. Industrial-sized kitchens and large gathering areas both inside and outside make event homes a hit with caterers. Game rooms, wet bars and other features enhance the wedding experience. Occupancy limitations apply, so be sure to check with property management companies.

Accommodations

It’s important to consider accommodations for your out-of-town guests who are coming to celebrate your special day. Luckily, real estate agencies and vendors on the Outer Banks are always ready to offer their help and answer questions. Whether you are taking on the task of finding a place for your guests to stay or just hoping to guide them, it’s a good idea to consider having everyone stay close together. Choose from neighboring rental homes, or hotels, motels and inns. Consider making reservations close to the reception site. Give rental managers and hotel managers an idea of how many guests you expect so they can strive to meet your personal and geographic needs.

Rental Homes

Rental homes are a great choice if you are getting married on the beach. Couples can rent several homes close together for family and friends. Many larger homes have 12 or more bedrooms, dual kitchens and can accommodate multi-family groups.

Tip – Consider hiring a personal chef or caterer not only for the reception, but also to cook meals while you are in your beach house!

Hotels, Motels, Inns

The Outer Banks is home to many wonderful hotels, quaint inns, cottage courts and beachfront motels. These accommodations are perfect for guests who may not be staying an entire week. Many couples block off rooms at a nearby hotel, motel, or inn in anticipation of the number of guests they will invite. Many hotel rooms have features like kitchenettes, pools, exercise rooms, and spa services. The options in this area are endless and are sure to leave your guests feeling right at home on the Outer Banks. No matter what venue you settle on, there’s no doubt that you’ll find the most beautiful places you can image right here on the Outer Banks. Take your time, relax and enjoy the process as you discover these amazing Outer Banks venues, one of which is sure to be the perfect spot to begin your new life together!

You’ve picked out the wedding date. You’ve selected your rings. You know you want your wedding to take place on the Outer Banks. Now the big question, where? The Outer Banks offers many choices in wedding venues. All unique in their own way. To figure which works best, you’ll need to ask some questions.

• Is it available? Make sure no one else already has it booked on your date. • Does it fit into your budget? Make sure there are no hidden fees. • Factor in convenience. Summer traffic can often turn a 15 minute drive into 45. • How is the size? Too big? Too small? Just right? • What is the catering situation? Is in in-house? If not, is your off-site caterer on the venue's approved vendor list (if they have one)? • If weather is a consideration. Does the venue have enough space for a ceremony and reception?

252.473.4800 207 Queen Elizabeth Avenue, Suite 5 in Manteo

AvenueEventsOBX.com

• If using an in-house wedding coordinator, will it be the same person from start to finish? You may not want to have to deal with multiple people during your planning. As you can see, there are many things to consider when selecting a wedding venue. Fortunately the Outer Banks has many venues to select from, and one will turn out to be the perfect place for you.

The Trends ... They are a’Changin’ OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM

2019 Trend Report To paraphrase Bob Dylan, it’s not only the times, but the trends that are also a’changin’. For the upcoming wedding season, changes in accessories for wedding dresses, signage, stationary, and the layout of your food stations, plus a whole lot more, will be a bit different that has been in the past. But don’t fret! The Wedding Guide is here to help you. We’ll walk you through exactly what you need to know! BY GREG SMRDEL

RIME ARODAKE

The Wedding Dress

ETSY.COM/SHOP/JENSIMPSONDESIGN

It’s All About The Paper

Kick off your wedding with stationary that will set the tone and showcase the theme of your special day. Keeping in mind that the invitation will be the first clue of your wedding theme that your guests receive. Be creative with them. Include a colorful map to the venues (especially if there’s more than one). The trend for 2019 has invitations and thank you notes sealed with wax. Reasonably priced wax kits are available and add a classy touch to your wedding.

Seems natural to start here. Most weddings begin and end with the dress. So let’s talk about the trends for the upcoming year. Whether its lace or a casual flared leg, bridal jumpsuits may be just the thing for your wedding. Be bold and break from convention! There are no instructions that are set in stone indicating that you need to wear a dress. Jumpsuits come in every style from “flowy and bohemian to cropped and modern,” according to one designer. But if it is a dress you want to wear, then you can make a statement with it. Think about using an oversized bow as an accent. These can be worn either on the chest or across the lower back. If you’d like to make an Art Deco splash on your special day, why not think about geometric patterns for your dress. It mixes classic with modern. The pattern can be flashy, or it can be as subtle as two-toned stripes. Whichever way you choose to go, you will look stunning on your wedding day. You’ve heard the saying, history often repeats itself. That is certainly the case with the next trend as it pertains to your wedding dress. They were popular in the 80s and they are making a comeback for 2019. Welcome back the puffy sleeves! Saint Laurent has been featuring them on their catwalks for a while now, and they will be one of the biggest wedding dress trends of the upcoming year.

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

The Color of the Year – Living Coral

Each year in early December, the color for the coming wedding season is selected. The color selected for 2019 lends itself beautifully for a beach wedding. It is Living Coral. Once you have selected your wedding colors, you can use the Pantone Color Matching System to ensure all your colors match. This is extremely helpful when matching nail lacquers, creams, glitter, and highpigment lip gloss.

Fun With Feathers

Feathers can make a dramatic accessory to your wedding day. They can be used as a simple twist in a bride’s up-do. They can used as a cake topping and even be incorporated into table centerpieces. Feathers can be a fun way to add some flair to your wedding day.

Gift Baskets

What better way to send a warm welcome to your guests – especially those traveling to a destination wedding – than with a gift basket. The thing to remember, the type of basket, or how you decorate it is inconsequential compared to what you put in them. Spend some time on each. Personalize the basket with items that will be tailored selected to each guest’s taste.

Flowers: Bold and Bright

Food Stations

It is said that 50% of food’s appeal is in the appearance. The upcoming trend for food stations is in the display. It’s not so much what is on each station (yes, of course food selection is important too), but the display is as equally important. Create a visually pleasing meal by staggering the height of your food stations. The food doesn’t need to be at all the same level. Have fun with it and create a different level for each station.

Balloons Are Back!

They aren’t just for kids anymore! Balloons are making an appearance in all aspects of a wedding. They are versatile enough to be used for the engagement shoot, the bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, and even at the wedding reception. Think balloon arch entrances, centerpieces for the tables, or hang them from the ceiling to create a party atmosphere. Here on the Outer Banks however, we must mention that for environmental issues, never release balloons into the sky.

As you think about flowers for your wedding day, think bold and bright. The upcoming trend for 2019 suggests that brides will be choosing fewer, but larger blooms to make a statement in their floral bouquets. Peonies, dahlias, poppies, daisies, and even some greenery pieces are just a few types of blooms that can be found in a larger size. Decorative grasses can even be used to embellish your aisles, especially a seaside aisle. Bigger, bolder and brighter will be a new way to spice up your bouquets and centerpieces in 2019.

Metallics, Stars, & Lights

Bringing the night sky into your wedding can create a romantic ambience. Starry skies have long been associated with both destiny and adventure. The perfect theme to start out your lives together. The sun, the moon, the planets, and the stars can have spiritual connotations, making them fitting to appear at your wedding day celebration. The celestial theme can be created in several ways. It can be through puffs made to look like clouds, or lanterns in celestial shapes hanging throughout the venue. It can be used as a seating accent using a golden cord and some glitter on your chairs. You can dot navy-colored linens with silver paint to create a star filled sky on your table. Or why not serve up cocktails in glasses that are hand-drawn with metallic stars using Sharpies? And of course, at the end of the night, the bride and groom can be waved off to begin their lives together with star-shaped sparklers.

Create the Mood with Signs

Signs come in a variety of styles. One of the trends for the upcoming season is to use either neon or acrylic signs to create the mood of your wedding. Let the signs emit certain emotions for your special day. They could be rustic or modern. They could be a wreath or a flower bouquet on acrylic placed throughout your venue with the bride and groom’s name on it. Or it could be a neon sign with “Love” or “Just Married.” The style is up to you.

Tarot Cards

We have all seen the photo booths at wedding receptions as a fun and different thing for your family and friends to do. They’re still important, and likely always will be. But there’s a new trend for 2019 weddings: The Tarot card reader. It can also be just the thing to keep your wedding guests occupied during the time wedding photos are being taken. Keeping it lighthearted and not heavy, Tarot card readings may just be the thing to set your wedding apart from any others. Incorporating just a few of the 2019 wedding trends into your special day will your wedding unforgettable. Not only for you, but for your family and friends too. of the wedding couple, family, friends and the wedding party. Photographers may shoot portraits in the studio or in more creative locales such as the sand dunes, on the beach, or beside piers.

This type of photography specializes in candid or spontaneous photographs as opposed to posed portraits. If you are looking for photos that capture the moment and tell a story, this may be the style for you. With documentary photography, you will see fewer photos of people who are lined up and smiling into the camera. These photographers will capture more fluid and spontaneous images of the entire event, and in the end, you will have your wedding story in photos.

They can choose which part of the composition to blur, sending the focus to artistic imagery and actions. sense of a photographer’s style is to look through his or her portfolio. You want your family to savor these memories for generations, so be sure to communicate your desires to the photographer.

Packages, Proofs, Privacy, and Prints There is a lot more that goes into hiring a photographer than what shots he or she will take on the wedding day. If you follow some simple guidelines, you can make the hiring process easier and lessen the possibility of undesirable surprises. During the interview, be sure to ask the photographer what packages are available and whether you can customize a package based on your preferences. The photographer should also let you know what album designs are offered and whether he or she will help create an album. Policies on features such as retouching and color adjustment are also important details to hammer out before a contract is signed. It is important to get answers such as whether the proofs will be retouched or if that happens only after the photos are selected. You should know before you hire a photographer whether there is an additional cost for retouching. Find out how many images you will get back and whether they will be high-resolution or low-resolution. Inquire if you will be able to reprint photos or if the photographer retains the rights to the images and negatives. The cost of the package and what services are covered is essential information. Ask about reprints, mini-albums, wall portraits, printing on canvas, frames, and which of those items are considered add-ons. And don’t ever be pressured to commit to a package on the spot. Know the timeline for when you will receive the proofs and inquire about whether you will be able to view them online or if you will get them on a CD. Check what the ordering process is and how long it will take to receive your photos or album. It typically takes two to three weeks to get your wedding images back. Often, completed print orders can be provided within eight to ten weeks. It’s a good idea to ask whether the photographer will give you the negatives or digital images and if there is

a fee involved. Another consideration in this age of social media is privacy. Some photographers will post wedding albums online so that your wedding guests can order their own prints, and as a way to show off their professional portfolio to future clients. If you are concerned about privacy, find out ahead of time who will be given passwords to your photo collection, how long they will be posted, and who determines which photos to post. Always insist on a written contract, know how much of a deposit is required, and inquire about possible payment plans if need be. Other need-to-know information includes the photographer’s refund/cancellation policy and whether they have liability insurance. A contract should include details of what services will be provided at what price, conflict resolution terms, overtime policies, etc. It is definitely time to walk away from the photographer who says that he or she doesn’t use contracts.

A Good Match You may be surprised to hear this, but the truth is that your photographer has to be someone you genuinely like. Remember, this person is going to be a significant part of your wedding day. If you find the photographer you are interviewing to be inflexible, pushy, abrasive, or just plain annoying, those sentiments will come across in the photos that are taken. Weddings can be stressful enough, so you need to hold onto all the joy that comes with the big day. One tip: Imagine that your photogra-

pher is one of the guests at your wedding and be sure this person is someone you would be happy to have attending. A warning flag should go up if you are asking all the questions and the photographer is not asking you anything. Photographers should be interested in how you want your wedding day to go. They need to know important details such as how many people are in the wedding party, the lighting at the venue, whether there will be dancing, who your attendants are, and how long you anticipate each phase of your wedding to last. These questions show they are invested, sensitive to detail, and interested in getting the best shots. If they are not asking, it may be time to consider interviewing another photographer.

A Vintage Touch: Black & White

Take away color, and you are left to completely focus on emotions, people and composition. Black and white photography will never be out of style. In fact, couples love it and enjoy mixing it in with color shots. Any color photo can be changed to black and white – or just portions of the photo can be colorized to make just the bride’s bouquet and the groom’s boutonnière pop out in a sea of gray, for example. Your photographer is the right person to ask if the image works well monochromatically or if it’s better in color. You can view it with just a click, thanks to digital photography. So if you are looking for drama, a vintage photo feel, or simply love the look, consider tried and true, black and white photos.

Small Booth = Instant Photo Fun Photo booths at weddings provide not only entertainment for your wedding guests but they also create an instant keepsake for them to take home. In addition to the photos that your guests will keep, today’s photo booths will automatically capture all of the day’s shots on a single DVD for the wedding couple to see and share later. Photo booth mementos make excellent gifts and are sure to be some of your favorite, unscripted sights from the wedding.

The Right Angle: Take Advantage of Where You Are Don’t forget all the reasons you picked the Outer Banks as your venue in the first place – the majestic ocean, romantic beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets! With this in mind, it is important to discuss details with your photographer about making the most of the natural environment on your wedding day. Remember that here on the Outer Banks, the sun rises over the ocean and sets on the sound. Time your wedding day and photographs accordingly if you are interested in sun-related shots. Ask about high and low tide on your wedding day and how that will affect your photos. Inquire about backup plans if the weather thwarts your desire for glorious outdoor photos.

Drone Photos Drones are everywhere and weddings aren’t any exception. Drones are perfect at providing aerial views of your wedding venue as well as hard to get vantage points of your wedding ceremony. Just think – an over-

What About a Videographer?

A photographer at your wedding is really a nobrainer. But the videographer can be just as important. After all, photos can’t capture the sounds, movements, and all of the emotions that go into your wedding day. Videos can immortalize every word of your vows, every music note during the reception, and every smile during the toast. The most recent trend in videography is highdefinition. In addition, new technology will allow you to add vintage-style scenes to your video. For example, a Super 8 effect, which gives the video a grainy feel, can allow you to enhance some classic shots. A videographer can improve color, contrast and volume after the film has been shot. Typically an amateur shooting a home video does not have the ability to meet all the challenges of videotaping a wedding. A bonus in hiring a professional videographer is that they have filmed dozens of weddings and can anticipate the crucial moments of the day. They also have the audio equipment to meet challenges in our unique environment, such as capturing the vows with the ocean roaring in the background or lighting contrasts between bright beaches and shaded piers. When it comes to documenting your special day so you can return to it years from now through photographs, the most important thing to remember is to go with the professionals. Don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions and be sure your personalities match. Be assertive and don’t settle for a style you don’t want. Remember it’s your special day. You make the decisions. ♥

you hire: A checklist ABefore checklist OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM

Before you hire:

A CHECKLIST

While it’s best to hire your photographer at least six months before the big day, you shouldn’t do so without careful consideration. Be sure the photographer meets your vision and needs. Once you have established that the photographer has your wedding date open and is willing to shoot the style you are looking for, schedule a meeting and be sure to ask these questions: ❑ How long have you been a professional photographer, and

how many weddings have you shot? ❑ Have you photographed weddings at the site where our event is being held? ❑ Will you be the actual photographer, or do you utilize assistants? ❑ How do you describe your working style? ❑ How will you be dressed? ❑ What type of equipment do you use? ❑ Do you shoot digitally, with film, or both? ❑ Do you photograph in both color and black and white? ❑ What backup equipment do you bring with you to weddings? ❑ May I request specific shots or groups of people that need to be captured? ❑ Do you have any other events to shoot on the same days as our wedding events? ❑ What time will photographers arrive, and how long will they shoot? ❑ If the wedding events last longer than anticipated, will you stay and how much do you charge for overtime? ❑ If a videographer is being hired, ask if the photographer has ever worked with him or her on another job and how they recommend coordinating their efforts. ❑ Ask to see the photographer’s portfolio – including photographs from all events at a wedding. ❑ Ask for references. (Contact three or four couples who have hired the photographer and had weddings similar in size and style to yours.)

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

Setting The Stage MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY

BY KIMBERLY ARMSTRONG

W

hen deciding on where to have their wedding, many couples choose the Outer Banks of North Carolina because of its natural beauty. Picture yourself looking around at the sun, the sand, and the sea. To your right and left, there are your family and friends. In front of you, you can see your future. Yes, it is finally your wedding day! The day that you have dreamed of your whole life is here, and you have chosen to tie the knot on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A blissful island, that gives you an assortment of diverse options all for setting the stage on your wedding day! Your choices can range from a fairy-tale like ceremony held at a historic landmark, to a more simple occasion allowing the complete natural beauty to decorate your special day. Let’s face it, it doesn’t get anymore scenic than the stunning, picturesque Outer Banks.

When planning your wedding day, there are a few questions you should start by asking yourself. What does your budget look like? How many guests will you want to invite? Will the ceremony and reception be held indoors or outdoors? Will you have a theme and if so, what will the theme and decorations look like? After deciding on some of these key factors, what once seemed like a jigsaw puzzle, will soon begin to piece together and the end result will finally be within reach. Try to fully envision exactly what you wish your day to look like. No matter your preference, whether it be elegant or effortless, the Outer Banks is capable of ultimately making it whatever vision you have built up in your mind. An Outer Banks wedding is a momentous and meaningful event for everyone that is involved. Your guests will love the warm and cozy small-town feel, and you will love the fact that your most cherished day was celebrated on an unforgettable island of paradise.

When planning an outdoor event, you will want to decide on what type of structural equipment to have. Keep in mind that Mother Nature could have very different plans than you do for your wedding day, so be sure to have a ‘Plan B’ that covers your entire day, from start to finish. Tents, gazebos, and canopies are just a few of the many rental options. The Outer Banks has some amazing wedding rental companies and can help you work out any concerns regarding weather that you may have. Having a backup plan is crucial especially if any part of your day will be spent outdoors.

Tuck Away with Tents

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

Weather can be unpredictable on the Outer Banks (think rain, wind, and sand), so deciding to use a tent for your outdoor ceremony and/or reception would be idealistic. Aside from using a tent for the obvious practical reasons, there are a few different options from which you can choose. The most popular style are frame tents and pole tents. There are tents with clear tops that allow for a natural light setting, and there are all-white tents that present a more elegant appearance. Be sure that your tent comes with enclosure options, so that once again you are prepared if Mother Nature decides to appear. Depending on the size of your wedding and the number of guests, you may want to consider using a larger tent for the ceremony and then multiple smaller tents to enclose the seating areas, dance floor, walkways, etc. This can allow for a more spacious and comfortable venue for your guests to freely move around. Tables and chairs are another major factor when planning the environment inside the tent. The style of party you are wanting to host is key and will help you to decide exactly what the seating will look like. If you are going for a more low key setting, arranging bar stations and stools to look more like a “cocktail party” can be unique. If you are going with a seated or a buffet dinner, you will need the exact number of tables and chairs to accommodate each one of your guests. No matter which type of tent you choose, the many different styles of decorating it are endless. Greenery, string lights, floral garlands, and sheer fabrics are just a few of the many options you have to make your wedding tent shine and sparkle. After all, the tent is the one main feature that will house your entire wedding, and will hold all of the day’s special memories inside its walls. Beaches of the Outer Banks have become a very popular choice in destination weddings. With that being said, each town and its own beaches come with different rules and regulations. Certain areas may require you to purchase a permit if you are looking to get married on the beach. Be sure to do your research, or you can always hire a wedding planner to sort out all of the logistics for you. Just remember, you can’t exactly pick your weather but you can always be well prepared for it!

Decorating Your Day

With a background as spectacular as the deep blue Atlantic, there really isn’t a need to go overboard with your decorations. Allow the natural side to play a major role in the theme of your big day. Having a beach wedding can allow for an effortless, yet elegant look. Take for example, an Arbor or an Arch. Either approach can provide an incredible center piece or focal point for your ceremony. You can decorate it any way you choose- flowers, fabrics, shells, sea glass, etc. Maybe even consider building your very own arbor or arch out of driftwood from the sea. Hanging greenery or even oversized wreaths versus brightly colored floral is a very different, non-traditional option. Allowing the sunset and some candles to light your surroundings can be another simple approach if you are having an evening ceremony. Just be sure to place the candles inside of hurricane globes to keep them from blowing out in the wind. How you choose to use chairs can also be a way of adding some ‘glam’ to your decorations. Dress up chairs by adding covers or embellishments to all or just specific seats. Consider adding wooden signs to the back of the bride and groom’s chairs, that read just that- “bride” and “groom”. Add some fabric drapes or floral strings to other chairs to add a bit of flare throughout your setting. Other decorations that you can incorporate, the ocean already has to offer- seashells, sea glass, driftwood, starfish, and sand pebbles. Have fun with your decorating, but also allow nature’s essentials to come into play to highlight your setting.

Spruce it up with Signs

MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY

Having signs at your wedding is an important detail, one that can also be fun. Whether the signs are there for sharing menu items with your guests, telling your guests where to sit, or simply just being used for unique decorating, wedding and hand-lettered signage is now a rising trend. Signs are a unique way to add personality and fun style to your wedding day setting. Deciding to use signs is also an easy way to rid yourself of some stresses and to stay organized, all the while sticking to your budget. There are lots of free internet tutorials that can help with making your own signs.

Meet at the Altar

Having a structure that resembles an altar can be a very important, personal, and meaningful component to some couples. The altar is the epitome of what the wedding embodies and why it is occurring in the first place. It is the exact physical location where you will be deemed husband and wife, and that spot will forever be ingrained into your minds and onto your hearts. It too holds a very deep and powerful religious meaning. It stands as the place where a man and a woman will presently become one union. No matter how you choose to decorate your altar, keep in mind all the while of its great significance, and the beginning of a journey that it represents.

Using different lighting styles to illuminate your wedding is quite the trend these days. Lighting has vastly evolved from the days where you simply needed to brighten up a reception building and to setup the dance floor. Fast forward to the present day, brides are using lighting to set the mood and create a very specific ambiance, while showing off the wedding theme. Using creative lighting approaches can also aid and benefit your photographer to get those perfect, romantic shots. Lighting options are endless; consider using string lights, floating lanterns, chandeliers, bistro lights, hanging candles, and luminaries. You could even use Edison style lights to outline and radiate the bride and groom’s pathway. Another new fad is to decorate your venue with oversize light-up block letters. You can use these to either spell out certain phrases that describe the bride and groom, or as a joint monogram for the newly married couple. This trend could be fun with thinking of cute sayings such as, “I Do” or “Mr & Mrs”. However you choose to light up your wedding tent, keep your theme in mind, and allow your creativity to flow and enhance your surroundings. As you are making all of your wedding day decisions, keep in mind that informality is key. Beach weddings tend to be a laid back affair so think natural, casual, and simple! Amidst all of the planning, organizing, and decision making, try to keep that end result in clear focus. The day that you exchange vows with the love of your life, will surely be an unforgettable and meaningful moment. The backdrop for your special day is of course crucial, and nothing quite compares to a romantic seaside wedding. After all, your wedding day is a new beginning, and you will be overwhelmingly satisfied and grateful that you chose to start your forever on the charming Outer Banks of North Carolina. In fact, you’ll be happier than a seagull with a french fry! ♥

fter just a few weeks of attempting to go it alone - the trials and tribulations of booking vendors, searching for the perfect venue, choosing every element of the décor for the ceremony and reception - you realize planning a wedding is time consuming and frequently frustrating. Even a bride who is ultra-organized, has an impressive knack for decorating, and knows just what she wants can falter under the sheer number of decisions, causing her to throw up a white flag and shout, “Bring in the professionals!” Hiring a wedding planner may seem a bit indulgent, a luxury even. But to streamline the process and make it more enjoyable, serious consideration should be given to bringing in reinforcement. You can choose the level of involvement you want from a planner (see sidebar). The good news is that it doesn’t have to be a budget-buster. In fact, having a wedding planner can save you money, turning out to be one of the best investments you will make. Don’t despair! Bringing a wedding planner on-board does not mean that you are relinquishing control of how your big day will look. A planner will merely embrace your wedding vision, execute it, and deliver an event you will remember the rest of your life. Read on for more ways a wedding planner can assist in making your dream wedding a reality.

Destination Wedding

If you are planning a wedding on the Outer Banks but live elsewhere, a wedding planner is invaluable. With so many details to attend to, planning from afar is a challenge. A local wedding planner will be familiar with the area as well as with local vendors and venues. By staying in close communication with you, the planner can represent you and your desires when meeting with florists, caterers, bakers, etc. Allowing you to avoid making multiple trips to the area.

Timeline

From determining the guest list, to booking a caterer, to choosing a photographer, to creating a seating chart, there are so many things to do and determining when is crucial. A planner will keep you on schedule, ensuring you address every item on your list in a timely manner. Let the countdown begin!

Budget

Once you have discussed your budget with your planner, every decision, purchase, and negotiation will be made based on that information. Do you know the cost of linens for 14 tables or the cost of 65 feet of gauze for the canopy at the reception? Your wedding planner knows. Your planner will create a detailed budget, making sure you stay on track, and will keep you updated along the way.

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

Sweet Deals

Speaking of budget, a wedding planner has spent time in the wedding business and is familiar with the area and local vendors. He or she is privy to insider deals, such as discounts from suppliers with whom they work regularly. Your planner is well-connected and knows how to get you the biggest bang for your buck, negotiating deals you wouldn’t get otherwise.

SARAH KEENAN CREATIVE

The Scoop

A busy wedding planner has dealt with multiple florists, caterers, hair stylists, and photographers. Being in-the-know, your planner can recommend the best vendors for your special celebration. This saves you from having to sort through online reviews. He or she can recommend the venue that will best accommodate your romantic gardenthemed wedding. That floral display you envision? Your wedding planner is familiar with a fabulous florist who can pull it off. And the planner knows the band or DJ that’s guaranteed to get everyone out on the dance floor.

Paper Chase

Contracts and paperwork? Ugh! Don’t worry. Your wedding planner’s got this. They can help you navigate the legalese and fine print. Acting as a go-between, your planner can sort out problems and keep track of payments, all while having your best interest at heart.

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

Mediator

As strange as it may seem, sometimes a wedding can bring out the worst in people. Strained relationships with family or friends, divorced parents of the groom or bride, new wives/husbands, estranged siblings, converging families - it can be a powder keg waiting to explode! A wedding planner can provide guidance on handling disagreements and can diffuse potentially volatile situations. Need to vent? They are there to listen. A wedding planner knows how to deal with sticky situations, act as a neutral party, and help avoid conflicts.

Hopefully, you have prepared yourself for the inevitability that something will go wrong on your wedding day. It’s a law of nature. But relax! You have a planner! Revel in the sense of peace you will have on the big day knowing everything is in your planner’s very capable hands. With your wedding planner as your point of contact for all vendors, he or she can handle last-minute questions from the caterer or florist, determine if the reception celebration needs to be moved inside, and generally make sure that everything runs smoothly. And you? Well, you just show up, share the love with family and friends and enjoy your special day. Bliss.

Will you step in as the middleman with the vendors?

You and your wedding planner will spend a lot of time together over the next few months discussing family, money, and various other personal issues so you want to make sure that person is someone you are comfortable with and can trust. Make sure he or she totally “gets” your vision for the nuptials. Your planner will naturally have a list of tried and true options, but are they willing to listen to your ideas? Does your wedding planner come across as honest and realistic when discussing the budget? Do they seem organized? Are they taking notes at your meeting? Do they appear to be calm? Does the planner exude professionalism and confidence? Does it appear he or she has a depth of knowledge of the area? Ask for references and follow up with them. Be sure to interview a few different planners before deciding. Develop a list of questions (such as the ones below) before your meeting.

A wedding planner’s expertise does come at a cost, but there are different levels of service that will make it a custom fit:

LEVEL 1: The Wedding Consultant or a la carte Perhaps you plan to negotiate with vendors and do much of the planning yourself. When a couple needs help with just a few aspects of the event, they may prefer a part-time wedding consultant to contact on an as-needed basis. A wedding consultant will develop a time-line of items to accomplish and a blueprint for each wedding event. The couple will do much of the work while asking for some ‘a la carte’ assistance from the planner. This arrangement offers help without straining your budget.

LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

A bride who is hands-on about planning every facet of her own wedding may opt for a day-of wedding planner. A day-of planner, as the name implies, is there for the entire wedding day, solely focused on your priorities and responsible for making sure your wedding day runs smoothly, allowing the couple a stress-free day. Somewhat of a misnomer, however, a day-of coordinator will begin working anywhere from two weeks to a month ahead of your wedding to make sure everything is in order. They’ll coordinate your ceremony and reception setup, keep you and your wedding party on schedule, and handle any necessary, immediate post wedding duties.

LEVEL 2: The Day-of Planner

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

This level of assistance is what most people envision when they hear the term wedding planner. A full-service planner, perhaps with the help of several assistants, will toil hundreds of hours on your behalf for many months leading up to the big day - handling it all start to finish. Services typically include budget preparation (and adherence), negotiating vendor contracts, tracking RSVPs, guest accommodation coordination, wedding party gifts, rehearsal coordination, and countless scheduled check-ins with the marrying couple. Some full-service planners will charge a percentage of your overall wedding cost, while others will charge a flat fee. Your full-service planner will always have a ‘Plan B’ in case of emergencies, mishaps, and inclement weather. This option is best for a pair looking to host a multi-day affair or destination wedding, or for couples who simply want a professional to guide them through every step of the wedding planning process. ♥

Day

Setbacks I

BY KIMBERLY ARMSTRONG

f excessive wedding planning ensured that nothing would go wrong on the big day, then many weddings would go off without a hitch. The truth is that doesn’t happen too often. It’s best to get comfortable with the idea that not everything will go as planned. And more important, make peace with that possibility. Read on for a list of potential wedding day setbacks and how to gracefully avoid or manage mishaps in a way that no one suspects what, if anything, went wrong. Inhale. Exhale. Relax. Everything will be fine.

The Weather

Outdoor weddings are lovely, especially when all of Mother Nature cooperates. What’s on your Wedding Weather Wish List (try saying that three times)? A madeto-order day of blue skies, sunshine, gentle breezes, and comfortable temperatures? While many details of your wedding are under your control, the weather is not one of them. Enter Plan B. Put clear backup plans in place for rain, heat, muddy grounds, and other potential weather conditions. Can the festivities be moved to an indoor facility? How about renting a tent? Or outdoor fans? You’ll need to reserve all well in advance so that they are available the day-of. Embrace your Plan B. It is crucial that you talk through Plan B with your wedding planner, and that you are completely happy with how your wedding will flow in the event of inclement weather. Determine how you’ll carry out the alternate plan. Involve your planner and other wedding party members to assist in the logistics of relocating and of notifying all wedding professionals and guests. It may also require making changes to the processional and recessional. Strongly consider purchasing event cancellation insurance. This will ensure that should a family emergency or weather event cause your plans to go awry, you won’t add to that stress by losing your money. By the Monday of your wedding week, you should have an accurate weather forecast for your day. If it turns out that the weather is not ideal, don’t let that dampen your enthusiasm. Remember, rainstorms are often followed by lovely rainbows.

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

Under the Weather

The stress of wedding planning and pre-wedding festivities can take a toll. While certainly loads of fun, it can be physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausting, leaving you vulnerable to illness. Be sure to take care of yourself by getting plenty of rest and eating a nutritious diet. You want to feel your best! Stash some Ibuprofen in your purse to have on hand if you, the groom, or a member of the wedding party needs it. Stay hydrated with water!

The Dress

What happened? The dress fit fine at your last fitting. But now? It’s too tight. Too loose. The zipper refuses to work. The zipper broke. Someone stepped on it. It tore! If it makes you feel any better, this is the most common wedding day mishap. The good news is, it’s all manageable. Any wedding planner worth their salt would never report for duty without a supply of safety pins. A quick fix for all manner of wardrobe malfunctions: missing buttons, broken dress straps, stubborn zippers, frayed hems, etc. Toss a roll of fabric tape in that sewing kit too for good measure.

Where’d It Go?

So many things to go missing. So little time to find them. There are eight groomsmen and seven boutonnières. The florist has skedaddled and is on her way to another event. What to do? Check the bridesmaids’ bouquets. Are there any similar flowers there that could be used? Or perhaps you could divvy up the other boutonnières to create one more.

Park and Ride

Things can get a little crazy during that “getting ready” stage. There’s a good chance something will be misplaced, even if only for a moment. It is best to keep rings, marriage license, and other jewelry in a secure place to avoid this mishap. You may wish to entrust these items to your planner for safekeeping. Someone forgot their shoes. Someone forgot their tie. Forgetting an accessory or article of clothing is not unusual. A checklist for each member of the wedding party would be most helpful. If the discovery is made too late, maybe a guest will be inclined to surrender their shoes for a good cause. Poor left-behind bridal veil. It is among the most forgotten accessories at weddings. To ensure you don’t forget your veil, place it in the garment bag with your dress. The night before, do a mental run-down of your head-to-toe attire and gather it all in one place.

Beach Ceremony

Keep in mind that if your ceremony is to take place on a public beach, there will likely be members of the public in attendance. If you really want to avoid a multitude of sunbathers, consider an off-season wedding. Late afternoon is the ideal time of day for a beach wedding as the number of people lingering on the beach will have dwindled, most having packed up to shower and head out in search of a delicious seafood dinner. Also, the light of late afternoon allows for better photos. Bear in mind that you may have to contend with photobombs. It goes with the territory. And don’t forget to check the tide chart. You want to avoid crashing waves as well as wedding crashers. Try setting up in an area where you will not interfere with clusters of sunbathers and any fearsomely competitive bocce ball tournaments. In general, beachgoers will be understanding of your ceremony and will be accommodating in the event they are asked politely to migrate northward just a bit. After all, who doesn’t love a seaside wedding? Well, possibly not everyone. Keep your cool. Your wedding planner will know what to do should any problems arise. You may just have to work around it. Cross your fingers and hope all that love emanating from your gathering will permeate the atmosphere, filling the minds of all onlookers with thoughts of hope for your wedded bliss.

Unpredictable Children Enough said.

“Event Home weddings are so popular on the Outer Banks, but they tend to lack parking,” says one local planner. “Be sure to hire a transportation service, such as a shuttle or trolley, and include the schedule for pick-ups and drop off in a welcome bag, or welcome letter for your guests. Also, be sure to let your guests know a few cab company numbers as well as the fact that we now have Über & Lyft on the Outer Banks.” While it’s important to provide ample transportation for your guests, ensuring you have a separate car for the bridal party is essential. That is particularly true in the summer, when traffic can derail a wedding day time-line. This is especially important if you are planning to have your hair and make-up done at a salon, get ready at a hotel or rental home, get married on the beach, and then proceed to the reception at a different venue. You will need to factor in travel time. It is always better to have extra time than not enough! A planner shared the story of how one couple had planned to depart the wedding festivities by boat but with the strong wind forecast for the afternoon it was not feasible. Just two hours before the ceremony was to begin, she arranged to have a classic car delivered for their getaway!

When Tempers Flare

Be prepared. Even on this most romantic day, an occasion brimming with love and happiness, an episode of anger can rear its ugly head. A wedding can bring up unresolved tensions, putting a strain on relationships, resulting in disagreements, arguments, hurt feelings, and resentment. Take note of relatives or friends who do not get along and give them a heads up regarding who will be in attendance so there are no surprises. Request they put their differences aside for your benefit. Beg or bribe if necessary. If they cannot agree to behave, toss a coin to determine who gets an invite. Family and friends need to keep any personal issues in check that could possibly trigger a fight at the wedding. Talking about potential issues is the best approach to prevent anything happening on the wedding day. Seating feuding family members far apart from one another can help keep the peace. For the bride or groom with divorced parents who have an acrimonious relationship, explain to both before the event how important it is that they get along. They are adults so all you can do is hope they’ll behave as such. If, despite all precautions, things get heated, it is not your place to intervene. Request your planner or a family member to step in as mediator. If the situation begins to escalate, involve the venue’s manager and let him decide how to proceed. If worse comes to worse, it might be necessary to call the police. The safety of the guests is most important. By keeping the focus where it belongs, on the wedding couple, even the deepest divides can be bridged, at least temporarily.

Unexpected Guests

It happens. And let’s just say it – it’s inconsiderate. Guests bring along a friend, thinking it won’t be a problem for just one more person to show up at your reception. They don’t comprehend the logistical problems this creates. And what happens if several guests have that same attitude? Plan to leave a few ‘open,’ flexible spots at a table or two. You can ask in advance about accommodations if this should happen. Seasoned caterers are no doubt familiar with this situation and are prepared.

LIFELISTENED.COM

The Big Day

Decide ahead of time that no matter what, you will remain present, calm, and focused on what the day is all about. Even if something doesn’t go according to plan, take comfort in knowing that you’re surrounded by all the people you love most in the world. They are there to help you, support you, and celebrate with you. Listen to the music and laughter. Smile and be happy. You just married the love of your life! Perfectly perfect. ♥

inding the perfect inspiration for wedding flowers can and should be fun, but choosing and coordinating your stems can be a bit overwhelming. There are some easy-to-follow guidelines that are sure to keep you smiling through the process. As your plans evolve, ask yourself these questions: • Are you decorating a chapel and reception hall? • Is your ceremony going to be on the beach, on uneven sand and dune lines? • Will there be a chuppah, arbor, or canopy that needs to be constructed as well as decorated? • Are you suiting out the entire bridal party with bouquets, corsages, or boutonnières? Picture yourself walking through a glorious garden with every flower at its peak. Which flowers would you choose for your wedding? Beach brides continue to embrace their love of the great outdoors and its calming beauty through flowers that are both stylish and ecofriendly. Flowy, cascading bouquets are ever popular, as are garlands for arbors, canopies or other structures. The vintage country look remains a popular trend, with nature taking front and center stage. Arrangements with texture, alongside mix and matched palettes, are the big thing looking forward. Colors are brighter and bolder, with oranges, reds and jewel tones setting new trends. Incorporating green foliage and plants is a great way to add texture to your flower arrangements, and also good for adding fullness to any flower centerpiece. Beautiful colors, interesting textures and unique shapes – greenery, alone or accented with a few blooms – can create exquisite arrangements with major impact. Accenting soft pinks and cream tones with rich, deep hues to add warmth and depth will create a breathtaking display. Think of deep tones like maroon, peony, hunter green, and coral

(Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year), pacific blue, and deep violet. A bouquet might incorporate subdued shades that are infused with bolder colors to create a dreamy, romantic arrangement. Still, there is one flower that is not bold, necessarily, but very much on trend: the lily of the valley. With its bell-shape florets that dangle gracefully from a thin stem, the popular flower has been featured in the bridal bouquets of iconic brides, such as Grace Kelly and Kate Middleton. The fresh, perfumed scent from its tiny flowers is unmistakable. In Norse mythology, the flower is linked to Ostara, the goddess of springtime, and while most plentiful during this season, it remains available most of the year (but can be expensive when not in season). Also known as Convallaria, the lily of the valley symbolizes trustworthiness and is sometimes called “the ladder to heaven.” While thumbing through bridal magazines, remember this: flower colors are rarely exact and often look different in person than they did in a magazine. Therefore, don’t be tempted to make selections solely based on how flowers look on the page. Let a professional florist help you understand the undertones of different varieties; for example, red ranunculus has orange undertones that stand out when paired with cool colors. When you interview potential florists, show them a photograph of your wedding attire and perhaps a swatch of fabric for the bridesmaids’ dresses, along with any pictures from magazines that have captured your imagination. Your florist will guide your selections so that the flowers you choose will be in season when the big day rolls around. He or she will be more than happy to work with you to convert your vision into a stunning and affordable reality. But be open-minded. Let’s say you have your heart set on white tulips for a July wedding or lily of the valley in August – be flexible when your florist tells you that the flowers you love simply are not in season then. There are many flowers available year-round, like roses, hydrangeas, carnations, callas, and orchids, just to name a few. Whether you are following new trends or staying true to tradition, use the months ahead to attend wedding shows, do some online research and interview florists. Have fun planning the flowers that will set the tone for your personal, special day. You want your wedding flowers to be beautiful – and so will your florist. Here are a few tips for making that happen.

LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

Know Your Budget The very first thing to discuss with your florist is going to be the budget. A good florist won’t try to upsell beyond what you can afford – they truly want to work with you to create your vision within the limits of your pocketbook. If you are on a tight budget, focus on your bouquet and make your attendants’ arrangements smaller and simpler – and therefore less expensive. Mismatched bridesmaid bouquets are an emerging trend, allowing for a little individuality with their bouquets. A fun idea is to have each bridesmaid carry a single flower that represents what is in the larger bridal bouquet.

MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY

Find Your Inspiration Pick one thing you love – a certain color, a special photo, a swatch of antique lace, or a cherished brooch that belonged to your great-grandmother – to give you and your florist a starting point.

Find a Florist You Really Love When you have that initial meeting with a florist, enjoy yourself! You want your florist to be as excited as you are about finding the perfect flower arrangements for your wedding day.

Personalize Your Bouquet

LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

Incorporate something special into your wedding bouquet (and do not restrict yourself to flowers). For instance, if you met on a train, you could tie a small train charm into your bouquet to symbolize where you met and fell in love. Where wedding flowers are concerned, it can be hard to know where to begin. Your florist will have ideas about design and color, but don’t be shy about asking other vendors, photographers, banquet managers, hair stylists and wedding gown salespeople about weddings they have seen with memorable flowers.♥

BY TARA TURNER

Maid for Each Other I

n the realm of a typical wedding ceremony, the presence of bridesmaids would seem to most just as normal and familiar as having a bride and groom. But as times and traditions are ever changing, women are beginning to put their own spin on wedding day customs. In this day and age, having a group of women stand beside you, all wearing the exact same dress, following you around during the ceremony, might seem a bit irregular. You might even be asking yourself, “Why do I need bridesmaids?” or “Who invented the idea of bridesmaids?” It isn’t uncommon in the present day to simply ‘do away with’ the standard wedding party troops. The actual historical reasoning behind bridesmaids is quite intriguing. The origin of the bridesmaid tradition arose from a combination of some vast, and very different factors. The most popular factors include family closeness, socialization, and religion. There are Biblical stories of a bride choosing “maids” that must accompany her during the wedding ceremony. However, these women were viewed as servants rather than our modern day social figure. Some sources also state that in ancient times, the bride and chosen bridesmaids wore exactly the same dress (style and color) and wore veils covering their faces in order to confuse and seemingly trick jealous suiters who wanted to kidnap or harm the bride. In this time period, the expectations of bridesmaids were none other than to protect the bride. Another source concludes that in ancient times, wedded couples were expected to have ten witnesses in order for their nuptials to be

deemed legal, hence the “wedding party idea.” It wasn’t until a more modern day time period that bridesmaids began to actually take on a more fun and contemporary role of serving the bride (in ways that I’ll point out later). For couples who have attended weddings themselves, have often felt like they have “seen it all”, and they feel as though they want their special day to be memorable, and to stand out in uniqueness with uncommon and non traditional elements. Having your friends and family members join you at the alter and standing beside you during your wedding ceremony can simply be a way of showing the bond that you have with those who have supported you in your journey that led you to that exact moment. But for some couples, sharing that special moment alone can be the most meaningful and memorable part about the entire day. Choosing to alter some traditional wedding practices doesn’t always mean that a couple will completely eliminate them all together. Some couples are now choosing to put a more present day spin on things by choosing one maid of honor and one best man. And this is where the wedding party stops. By doing so, this allows the couple to still partake in a wedding party tradition, but with putting a more simple touch to it. Deciding to go this route still allows both the bride and groom to have their closest friend abide with them and also to endure any obstacles that might arise. Those very obstacles are one of the many purposes behind having a maid of honor and/or brides-

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY SARAH KEENAN CREATIVE SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

maids. Weddings themselves and the day-of can be quite stressful for a bride. Challenges that she can face are added stress and having close girlfriends near by can help ease those pesky wedding day anxieties. If a bride chooses to have a wedding party, bridesmaids do have a very important role. Her list of responsibilities could essentially go on forever, taking on any little problem can help to completely remove the bride from any potential stress. Some bridesmaid duties and expectations include but are definitely not limited to: Being the bride’s emotional rock. Planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful times in a woman’s life. She will need your ongoing support during the months leading up to the wedding day, and then of course on the actual day itself. Helping with pre-wedding projects. There are countless tasks that will need done to put on a grand show such as a wedding. Many of these tasks include; choosing a venue, dress shopping, creating favors for the guests, mailing invitations, arranging a seating chart, help with finalizing the guest list, prepare an emergency kit for the bride, and among all other tasks, be willing to run any errands that the bride may need. Assisting the bride as much as you are able to will help keep her stress levels down, and will in turn help keep her ‘Wedding To Do’ list at bay. Dress shopping and fittings. As the role of a bridesmaid, you will be expected to shop with the bride for her wedding dress. As her friend, she will value your opinion as she gets closer and closer to saying “yes to the dress!” You will also be expected to purchase a bridesmaid dress. This may be a dress that the bride picks out, or yourself if you are given the freedom to do so. Bridesmaid dresses can range from $150 to $500, given the style and brand. You should also factor into your budget alterations. Most dresses come in a generic sort of size, in which case you will need a seamtress to fully customize the dress to your individual needs. Plan and help host traditional pre-wedding events. The numerous events that take place before the actual wedding can be very time consuming with planning and can be costly. You will need to plan and host (or co-host if there is a maid of honor) a bridal shower. The bridal shower is an intimate time for the bride to be celebrated by her closest friends and family. The custom of a shower originated in the late 1800’s, and is just as popular today. Throwing the bride a shower is simply for the giving of gifts for the upcoming home of the bride and groom. It is to provide goods and also financial assistance to ensure that the couple are deemed ‘well off.’ You should also make an effort to attend most if not all meetings with the bride (wedding day venue meetings, food and cake tastings, meetings with the florist and photographer, and obviously the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.) Gifts from the bridesmaid. Wedding etiquette says that bridesmaids are expected to give a wedding gift, even if they have covered costs for pre-wedding expenditures. However to make things a bit easier, bridesmaids chipping in for one major gift is acceptable. Even picking up a small item (think less expensive pictures frames, candles, etc.) are adequete as well. Try to keep in mind that it’s not how much money to spend on the bride and groom, it’s the pure fact that it came straight from your heart. Be available for the bride at all times. Keep in mind that the bride asked you to be a bridesmaid in the first place because you two are close, she loves you, and wants you to share in her special day. She will need your support and guidance from the day she becomes engaged until the day she says “I do!” Couples have bridesmaids for many different reasons. For some it is a way to include their closest family and friends into their special day. For others it is more for traditional, cultural, or religious reasons. So whether you envision that day happening traditional or modern, the most important thing to remember is that it is YOUR day and it will be special no matter what! ♥

A Groom’s Guide

TO WEDDING PLANNING

g

rooms who are actively involved in wedding planning are finding that it can be a lot of fun and a great way to tackle one of the first big challenges of your lives together as a married couple. When couples plan their special day together, everything from color schemes and menus to wedding invitations and flowers becomes an expression of both of you and your love for each other. There is certainly plenty for you as a couple to do together, but splitting up some tasks will ensure that your partner doesn’t become overwhelmed, making the months leading up to the big day exciting and fun as opposed to stressful and hectic. Many couples find that splitting up tasks from the beginning is the best way to tackle a “to do” list. A checklist and setting simple deadlines can also help and often sets the stage for a smooth and productive planning period. This way both bride and groom know what the expectations are and can work as a team every step of the way. A groom’s responsibilities can vary. Traditionally, his duties have included some of the reception arrangements, mapping out the transportation logistics, selecting gifts for his groomsmen, and planning the honeymoon and bachelor party. But these duties are definitely not set in stone. Couples these days are sharing tasks in whatever way works best for them. Of course, some tasks may be better suited for the groom and some for the bride, depending on their strengths and personalities. So take the time to consider

MICHELLE WAGNER

each of your likes and dislikes and where you think you are best suited to pitch in. Remember, just because you may not be so enthusiastic about labeling invitations, looking at flowers or choosing party favors, these are tasks that must be done and doing them together can make it more manageable and definitely more fun. And don’t forget, it will strengthen your relationship and get your marriage off to a good start!

The Game Plan It may serve grooms well to first consider what aspect of the wedding they would like to have the most influence on. Then it’s time to pick a relaxed atmosphere for the two of you to sit down and begin mapping out the months that will end with your special day. It’s helpful to create an outline – minute by minute – of the wedding day and what you need to do to make it happen. Enlist your groomsmen and other trustworthy family members and friends to help along the way and on the day of the event. Be sure the list includes everything from choosing your wedding bands to giving the best man the rings. Include the deadline you need for tasks to be accomplished as well as any source material such as phone numbers and addresses. A important contribution grooms could make in the process is helping to do a little research on vendors, not to mention attending vendor meetings with your partner.

One more thing – consider the two of you writing your own vows as a way to personalize your day and reflect on your new life together. It would be a perfect way to share some quiet moments as your wedding day draws close.

Traditional Expenses of the Groom Just because there are “traditional” responsibilities of the groom and his family, it does not mean it is what you and your partner will decide on. More and more couples are sharing the expenses of the wedding and honeymoon. But if you are going the traditional route, grooms typically pick up the tab for the entire rehearsal event including the dinner, invitations, decorations and entertainment. The groom also traditionally pays for the marriage license, the bride’s rings, the officiant’s fee, gifts for his attendants, corsages for the mothers and grandmothers, as well as the bride’s bouquet.

May I Have This (First) Dance? What could be more romantic than suggesting to your fiancé that you take a dance class together? It will help you prepare for your wedding day when all eyes will be on the two of you during that first song. You can play a role in choosing the song for the first dance and other songs the band or DJ will be playing.

When the Big Day Arrives There is a lot to remember on the morning of your wedding day, and it can feel overwhelming. Here is a list of potential last-minute concerns or day-of questions that frequently pop up: • Will your best man have the rings? • Is the honeymoon luggage easily accessible? Do you have a change of clothes accessible for your getaway?

LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

• • • •

Will your best man return your rental suit for you? Do you have the notes for your toast or speech? How will you keep track of car keys and/or house keys on your wedding day? Most guests know not to bring wedding gifts to the actual ceremony, but inevitably, a few will show up. Assign someone who will be in charge of transporting them to a desired location. • Gather passports, credit cards, and other necessary documentation for your honeymoon and keep in one place. • Determine who will have the checks or cash to pay the musicians, photographers, drivers, and any other professionals who need to be paid at the end of the event? Make sure you arrive at the ceremony site at least a half hour before the service begins. Give the best man the payment envelopes so he can take charge of paying everyone after the service. Use this time to go over any special seating arrangements with your ushers and double check that you have the marriage license for the officiant and your witnesses to sign after the ceremony.

Support Your Partner Wedding planning can be stressful, but it can also be fun and be a great way to bring the two of you even closer together. There are plenty of ways you can show your bride-to-be that you appreciate everything she is doing to make your wedding day perfect. Leave a love note inside her purse, pick a wildflower and place it on her windshield, fix her a special dinner or have take-out ready on a particularly busy day. It is also important to be familiar with who will be attending the wedding from her side of the family. You can flip through a family album together or share fun stories about relatives to help connect names and faces.

Book a charter boat to experience inshore and offshore angling with your buddies, or head out to the beach or one of many fishing piers with your rod in hand. You can rent what you need on site if you haven’t packed any gear. Piers generally offer food and beverages to enhance the experience. Be sure to inquire about fishing permits at your local tackle shops or visit www.ncwilidlife,org for more details. Touring the majestic lighthouses of the Outer Banks is a great way to explore history and take in an incredible view. From Corolla to Ocracoke, coastal beacons provide great stopovers, climbing adventures, and photo possibilities. No matter what your preference, you and your guests are bound to find the Outer Banks a memorable place of adventure, natural beauty, and fun. Don’t forget to take your camera – waterproof if needed – to savor your memories for years to come!

Transportation Transportation should never be a last-minute decision and it involves more than just renting a car or limo. There are many details to work out and the party can’t start until everyone has arrived. Be sure transportation details are hammered out well before the big day arrives. Consider using transportation for these events: • Wedding showers • Bachelor(ette) parties • Airport shuttle for out-of-town guests • Rehearsal dinner • Honeymoon getaway • Group guest activities

Planes, Trolleys, and Automobiles

Traditionally, the groom is responsible for taking care of all facets of transportation: everything from picking guests up at the airport and hiring the wedding day trolley or limo, to making sure guests have maps and designated driver alternatives. Do your research; make reservations when necessary and have a handy list of transportation companies on hand, just in case. Always remember to consider potential traffic congestion, particularly during the tourist season and busy weekends during the shoulder

OUTER BANKS PRODUCTION

months. For example, if you need to get you or your guests from Nags Head to Duck for a Saturday morning ceremony in the summer, you will need to be sure you allow plenty of extra time due to traffic congestion. There are many ways to get the bride and groom to and from the wedding events in absolute style. From a stretch SUV to an old-fashioned trolley, options exist to suit your style and needs. Keep safety and efficiency in mind as you also consider how to cart your guests to and fro!

Designated Drivers The biggest reason to consider wedding transportation for your guests is the obvious: drinking and driving. You want your guests to have fun at your reception, but you also want them to arrive at their destinations safely. The legal blood-alcohol limit in North Carolina is .08. That’s just one or two drinks for most people. Plus, out-of-town guests are probably not familiar with directions to wedding venues. Another reason to transport your guests is that parking at rental homes on the Outer Banks is very limited. A typical formula for non-event homes is one parking space per bedroom in the home. Also, parking on the grass can be a costly violation at most homes because of damage to underground septic systems. By providing transportation for guests, you can rest assured that everyone will get to the church (or beach) on time. Remember this tip: Do not wait until the last minute to book wedding transportation. It could cause unnecessary stress and result in confusion and last-minute details to be forgotten. You also need to factor the cost of transportation into your overall wedding budget. When booking your wedding wheels – the earlier the better!

Things to Keep in Mind • Research the vehicle that will be assigned to your event and check on how often it is cleaned: A twenty-year-old limo without proper upkeep may not be the luxurious getaway car that you are envisioning. • Always book for longer than you think: It is a good idea to add 20 to 30 extra minutes to each trip to allow for late arrivals and traffic delays. • Always book in person: You can do your research online and talk with companies over the phone, but take the time to make your final booking in person so that you can inspect the vehicle. • Pay attention to the contract: Read the contract thoroughly before you sign. Double check the date, hours, and pick-up locations. Make sure the company is insured, and research its cancellation and refund policies. • Have a family member or friend call the driver 20 to 30 minutes ahead of time to make sure your ride is on the way. There’s no doubt that there is plenty of planning to do as your big day approaches. What better way to spend that time than working together to plan the wedding of your dreams. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that wedding planning doesn’t have to be a stressful time and it can actually be a lot of fun. So what are you waiting for‌it’s time to start planning! ♼

The Big Day: Grooms Sport Their Style MICHELLE WAGNER

MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY

What you wear on your wedding day is a reflection of your own unique style – so it makes sense to put some thought into what you and your groomsmen are sporting on your special day. Trends come and go, but a groom’s style is his definitely his own, and it’s a perfect time to let that shine.

W

hether you lean toward the more casual look or are after a more classy style, here are a few trends that have surfaced on the wedding scene that may speak to you as you prepare for one of the most important days of your life.

Mix it Up More and more, grooms and groomsmen are showing off their style with mismatched suits. While it’s always a good idea to follow the groom’s lead as far as style, that doesn’t mean that the groomsmen can’t change it up a bit, whether it means a mix of jackets, ties, or more. Even though experts suggest keeping suit color and fabric the same, there are plenty of opportunities to show your style by mixing it up a little bit! For an even more mixed up style, grooms are now leaning toward the casual by wearing shorts and a simple

button down shirt for the big day. Not all weddings are designed or need to be to be elegant affairs, especially those with a beach setting. Consider beach attire for your beach wedding.

Time for the Tie What you wear around your neck on the big day can say a lot about your style. And today’s groom has plenty of choices, from the bowtie, necktie or no tie. If you go the tie route, be creative and choose one that says you. From floral designs and stripes, to checks and bold colorful designs, it adds the perfect touch to any groom’s attire. Ties not your style? Classy, creative bowties are also making their way back onto the wedding scene. And don’t rule out the traditional neckties, which come in a variety of style and colors depending on the occasion and of course, your own personal style.

Say it with Socks Want to make a statement on your wedding day? A man’s socks (and shoes) can say a lot about him and his own personal style. Get creative about your socks – by either choosing colorful ones, patterned or even polka dot. Have a favorite super hero or sports team? Show it with your socks! And as for the shoes, remember anything goes depending on what look you are after. From the more traditional wingtip shoes to cowboy boots – let you feet do some of the talking on your wedding day. Suspenders are also back in style and can help grooms combine playful with elegance. Consider matching your suspenders with the accessories of the bride, or perhaps with her shoes or bouquet. And when it comes to choosing, there are thousands of styles in an array of fabrics so you’re bound to find one that fits your personality perfectly.

Don’t forget the Cufflinks Grooms are sporting cufflinks these days not only to coordinate with their bride’s ring or dress, but also to share a touch of their personality. From elegant options like gemstones or diamond-studded, or to show off a hobby or even an alma mater, cufflinks are just another way for the grooms to share a piece of their personality on the wedding day. Many are also considering adding a splash of color with pocket squares, lapels and buttonholes. As you can see, there are plenty of ways for grooms and their groomsmen to express their unique style on the big day. But whatever you decide on, it’s your chance to show the world your personal style on one of the most important days of your life. Chances are that your style is one of the many things that made your partner fall for you in the first place – so go all out and express yourself on your special day! ♥

96 2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

...and Eat it Too!

You Can Have Your Cake

Cake tasting. Quite possibly the loveliest combination of words in the English language. Or, maybe it’s butter-cream frosting. Lucky you! There aren’t going to be too many opportunities to while away an afternoon sampling cake, guilt-free. Wedding planning can result in decision-overload but choosing your cake is hands down the most fun! To help you navigate the sweet path to your personal confection perfection, consider the following topics and tips.

Budget As with everything associated with your wedding, decisions are dictated by how much you want to spend. And naturally, the more elaborate the cake, the more expensive. However, a beautiful cake does not have to be a budget buster. Cake prices are calculated by the amount of labor and hours the baker spends on the cake and on the number of guests you expect to feed. Most bakers price wedding cakes by the slice which could vary from $1.50 a slice up to $15 or more a slice. Generally, three tiers will serve 50 to 100, and you’ll likely need five layers for 200 or more guests. Just keep in mind that bakers likely have different pricing policies. A cost-conscious bride may consider procuring her wedding cake from a supermarket bakery. Grocery stores have homed in on the wedding cake business and employ bakers with skills that go far beyond piping “Happy Birthday” greetings on standard sheet cakes. This option could offer up some sweet savings! Labor-intensive details such as fondant icing, flourishes of sugar-paste flowers, an abundance of piping, and elaborate shapes, will result in a higher price. For cost-cutting measures, you could serve your guests “half-servings.” Or you could order a smaller version of your dream cake to have on display and for the cutting-of-the-cake photos. For the guests, you could have sheet cakes made with the same ingredients and frosting as your display cake. The sheet cakes would be “hidden” in the kitchen and sliced up by the catering staff. Another option is to display cakes as mini-cakes, rather than a towering stack. This provides an opportunity to offer more flavors too. It may be hard to imagine, but not all the guests will eat cake. They may have overindulged at the fabulous taco bar or refuse to relinquish their spot on the dance floor where they’re engaged in a robust performance of “The Macarena.” It’s best to decide on a budget before meeting with the baker. There’s a risk you could slip into a sugar coma and lose your ability to think sensibly.

SARAH D’AMBRA PHOTOGRAPHY

Do you have a vision of your wedding cake dancing in your head? Before your bakery consultation, jot down your ideas and explore your options. Need some inspiration? Google “wedding cakes” and try to avoid entering a trance-like state as you scroll through a gazillion photos. Choose a cake that’s compatible with your overlying theme, the style of the venue, the season, your gown, the flower arrangements, or the menu. It’s no surprise that beach-themed cakes are popular on the Outer Banks! A traditional cake is round. Square cakes offer a modern flair and provide lots of surface area for creativity. A square cake will generally feed more guests because it can easily be sliced into uniform pieces. A hexagonal cake takes a square cake to an all new six-sided level. A scalloped cake resembles the petal shape of a flower and could be stacked alternately with a round cake to add interest. Hopeless romantic? Choose a heart-shaped cake. Whatever shape the cake takes, it’s bound to taste delicious!

Choose a Reputable Bakery Allow enough time to choose your wedding cake – about 3-6 months. Begin your research online. Check out the websites of local bakers and prepare to be amazed as you view the marvelous creations of the talented bakers here on the Outer Banks. Their cakes rival anything you would find in a large city. Read customer feedback and reviews. If possible, check out local bridal expos in the area. Perhaps you’ve attended a friend’s wedding recently and found the cake served at that event to be delectable. Make an inquiry to determine the responsible baker. Also, check with your caterer as they might provide wedding cakes. Ask your wedding planner for referrals as well. When you find a baker whom you feel will meet your needs, arrange a meeting for a cake consultation. Share some of the details of your wedding, especially the reception venue, and let them know your vision for the cake. Take along color charts, fabric swatches, photos, etc., to help convey your ideas. Ask the baker for suggestions if you’re still unsure. If the baker and her staff are receptive and appear to be eager and willing to please, you may have found the ideal baker. On the other hand, if they don’t take time with you or you feel rushed and they avoid answering your questions, you will want to continue searching. Please do not wait until the last minute! Your choices will be limited if you do. A wedding cake is a work of art and the baker will need plenty of time to devote to your custom creation.

Flavors

MATT LUSK PHOTOGRAPHY

Basically, you want a cake that looks good and tastes good. Avoid choosing something too unusual as the guests might be turned off by an unrecognizable flavor. You will probably pay a substantial amount for the cake so choose something that is likely to appeal to most everyone and avoid oodles of leftover cake. Vanilla continues its reign as most popular flavor followed closely by chocolate. Red velvet with cream cheese frosting (naturally) is a real crowd-pleaser. One surprising player to enter the fray is funfetti. Those multi-colored sprinkles pretty much scream, “Party!” Coconut, lemon curd, dulce de leche, and almond have all hopped on the flavor bandwagon. But who says your cake must be one flavor? You could choose assorted flavors for each layer, providing they’re complementary of each other. If you simply cannot decide on just one cake, then how about several different cakes? Guests would love the variety.

C A K E T R ENDS Professional cake artists continue to wow with their creativity. Note these trends for 2019, including some favorites held over from 2018.

Black Cake

Bye-bye sweet, soft pastels! Hello black cake? This unconventional cake is a real attention getter. And while it might not be for everyone, it certainly makes a statement – sultry sophistication with a little mystery on the side. Dial back the black by adorning with real flowers or frosted embellishments in lighter colors. Not quite ready to go over to the dark, dark side? Consider a dusky blue or moody purple cake. Be bold and embrace the drama!

SARAH KEENAN CREATIVE

Textured Cake

Toppers That generic wedding couple who dutifully kept vigil atop many a wedding cake has been toppled by more up-to-date versions. Personalized options are available, such as a couple that looks just like the two of you, with matching hair color and striking a variety of poses. A special heirloom such as your parents’ cake topper adds a touch of sentimentality. A simple spray of flowers, a meaningful quote, or banner are popular as well. Of course, there’s always the option to go topless!

Dietary Restrictions Consider providing gluten-free or vegan alternative cake to accommodate guests with food restrictions or special diets.

Delivery Determine whether the cost of the cake includes the delivery fee. Cake delivery and setup can be quite a complicated affair – leave it to the professionals. In most cases, they have a specially equipped cooled van to transport the cake. Ensure there is a reserved place of honor and a stand for the cake and that the baker or delivery person is aware of its location – you don’t want to move the cake once it’s assembled. Is the temperature cool enough to accommodate the cake being on display for a few hours? Whipped cream and buttercream do not fare well in excessive heat! Have your wedding planner coordinate with the bakery to finalize a plan.

Skip the Cake There are plenty alternatives for providing a sugar rush. The stand-alone cake is being replaced with extravagant dessert tables, filled with favorite treats of the wedding couple. Guests can now enjoy a vast array of delicious goodies from bite-sized cheesecakes and eclairs to macarons, Jenga-like towers of donuts, gourmet cookies, even pies. Whatever confection you ultimately choose, it will be the perfect sweet ending for your day of celebration and the perfect sweet beginning for your new life together. ♥

When it comes to showcasing artistic flair, the sky’s the limit with the refined details of these cakes. Using a sculpting technique, raised piping, delicate ruffles, diamond patterns, or uniform pleats have the appearance of being embossed on the frosting, creating a look of understated elegance.

Metallic Icing

Seems metallics are still riding the wave of popularity. Especially when used as embellishments like flecks of gold leaf, sprinklings of gold sequins, woven threads resembling embroidery, or a glimmer added to the whipped edges of frosting. A gold rush to add glitz and glamour. Take a shine to this trend and have some fun!

Monograms

Stake your claim on your cake with your initials, the perfect way to add something personal. A monogram is a great way to honor your newly-shared last name or combination of your first initials. Customize the look with painting, piping, or applique. The options are nearly endless.

Drip Cakes

The name is not especially inspiring, but the effect is eye-catching. Melted white chocolate, a caramel glaze, or a rich chocolate ganache is poured over the top tier of the cake so that it drips down the sides like paint, resulting in a style that’s chic and relaxed.

Ribbon Trim

For a truly simple and inexpensive garnish, consider wrapping a tier of your cake in a swath of ribbon. Minimum effort, maximum effect. You might use the same color ribbon as your bouquets or choose something contrasting and whimsical.

Textile Motifs

Motifs such as macramé, tassels, brocade, and beaded bands that resemble luscious strands of pearls are brought to life in frosting.

Bohemian

The Boho wedding vibe drums a steady beat that plays to natural and organic elements. Cake draped with a garland of ivy, herbs, fruit, and rustic grapevine wreaths entwined with fresh flowers – all nods to the simplistic beauty of Mother Nature.

Almost Dressed Cakes

Seems the popular naked cakes have taken a turn towards modesty, choosing to allow just a glimpse of their cakey backside peak through wispy layers of frosting that lies like a feathery dusting of snow.

Mardi Gras

A Mardi Gras themed wedding would of course call for a Mardi Gras style cake. And that would be none other than the festive “king cake.” The bright, fun colors imbued in this time-honored confection will leave no doubt that it’s all about the celebration. And don’t forget the baby! A wish for luck to whoever finds the tiny infant in their slice of cake!

White

You can count on white wedding cakes never going out of style. Offering a blank slate, opportunities for embellishments are endless. Cascades of real or sugar flowers, pearls, a brocade or ruffled finish, or piping in an ivory shade or a pale pastel will add to its understated opulence. Choosing a different shape such as round, square, oval, etc., for each tier will put a new spin on this classic choice.

f your animal is calm and can join the ceremony, maybe you can see them walking down the aisle dressed in a bowtie or adorned with a garland of flowers. Maybe your pet would be the perfect greeter? Some older pets might be ideally suited to hospitality, simply sitting where guests arrive with a sign welcoming them. But before you get carried away with your planning, do take the time to consider some special needs and accommodations that must be made for a flawless pet-friendly wedding on the Outer Banks. As you consider your wedding venue, rental house, or hotel, check to see if the beaches and walking paths near your venue are pet-friendly. Vacation rental companies have their searchable databases for pet-friendly homes. Most pet homes allow for one or two adult dogs with an additional pet fee that can typically range from $95-$200. Fees and cleaning costs will vary depending on the rental company, the number of pets and each particular homeowner, so it is best to research before finalizing your rental. Some companies charge no fee, so it pays to look around. When it comes to your reception, consider holding it at your rental house or under a tent at a pet-friendly beach. Most Outer Banks restaurants and public venues will only allow service animals.

Pet Sitters The bride has a maid of honor, and the groom has a best man. Your dog needs the same kind of backup if they’re going to be part of the big day! You know your pet better than anyone, so don’t throw them into the festivities without a little prep work. You’re going to be busy, so make sure you have one or two dedicated caregivers assigned to look after Fido so he is walked and fed, medications are administered, and a bed is properly set up while you’re getting ready.

Yes, you can plan the perfect Outer Banks wedding and include your dog! Our pets play an important role in our lives and what better way to honor them than to have them participate in the big day? Pet-friendly weddings are more popular than ever before with dogs and even cats playing roles as ring bearers, flower girls and welcoming hosts.

Also, think about your pet’s health at your ceremony – many plants and flowers are toxic if eaten, and hot sand can burn the pads of an animal’s feet. And, of course, don’t forget the water. Just as every bride needs lots of hydration on her big day, so does your pet. A beach wedding can get hot! Your chosen pet sitter should be willing to take responsibility for the safe transportation of your pet both to and from the wedding, ensure ample exercise, food and potty breaks. In most cases, it is ill-advised to include your canine in the reception. Dogs perceive the world through smell, and the combination of new scents, food, loud music, and dancing during the reception could be source of unnecessary stress. You will want to be considerate of your guests too, of course. Do share your decision to include your pet in your wedding with your guests. Those who suffer from allergies or may be fearful of dogs can make informed decisions and take necessary precautions.

A Word About Local Animal Control Laws Be aware of leash laws. Every town and private venue on the Outer Banks will have their own pet policy. When holding a wedding in a public park, a privately-owned venue or any commercially owned business, you must check with that entity before planning your ceremony. One thing to remember, no

As the Big Day Draws Near Consider arranging for grooming before the wedding so your pet will look their best. If you intend to accessorize, make sure they’re comfortable in fancy garb by trying it out a few times in advance. If your animal balks at a full get-up, surrender the fantasy and opt for a simple collar instead. In general, it’s best to keep adornments minimal and easy for the pet to wear. Don’t make him or her wear them for longer than is necessary.♥

matter where your ceremony takes place, clean up after your pet! Bring waste bags with you and dispose of them properly. In Corolla, dogs are allowed year round on the beach and at the Whalehead Club’s Heritage Park but must be on a leash. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout Duck, including the municipal boardwalk, Duck Trail, the Duck Town Park and on the beach. For a Southern Shores wedding, please keep your pet on a leash at all times and remember that from May 15 through September 15, dogs are only permitted on Southern Shores beaches from 6pm to 9am. On Kitty Hawk beaches, dogs must be on a 6-foot leash from 10am to 6pm beginning the Friday before Memorial Day through the day after Labor Day. From 6pm to 10am dogs may be on a 12-foot lead. The rest of the year, however, Fido may run on the beaches in Kitty Hawk leash free as long as they stay within 30 feet of their owner and return when called. Pets must be kept on a leash at all times in the town of Kill Devil Hills and are not permitted on the beach from 9am to 6 pm between May 1 and September 30. Pets are welcome at any Nags Head beaches and parks any time as long as they are on a 10-foot leash. On Hatteras Island beaches (including Rodanthe, Waves, Avon and Salvo), with the exception of some designated swim beaches, dogs are allowed provided they are on a 6-foot leash.

OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM

Harvey - Rountree An on-the-spot engagement

“After dating for 5 1/2 years, I finally asked if he thought we’d get married or what? He ran out that same morning and bought a stand-in engagement ring from the pawnshop and proposed while we were planting our spring garden that afternoon, saying, “I didn’t want you to think for another day that I wasn’t going to marry you.” He got my dad’s permission and started ring shopping the next day.”

The perfect dress

“I wore my mom’s wedding dress that my grandma, “Ma” had made. Ma was a wonderful seamstress and learned to sew from her mother-in-law who worked for a designer in NY. Ma would have been 100 this year. It’s heavy off-white linen with a thick lace border. After a long search, we found an Italian lady in Williamsburg who did the alterations for us. Stitching everything by hand, she tailored a more modern neckline, cut the back out of the dress, and added a narrow cord and bow around the waist to make it my own.”

Who shoots a photographers wedding?

“Ben Hitchcock worked for me at GingerSnaps Photography for six years and left for a full-time job in construction just prior to our wedding; he still does freelance work on the side and still shoots for me when I need an extra hand. He is a close friend and did our engagement portraits and day after session as well. Kristi Midgette owns her own photography business and offered to 2nd shoot for us. She’s been a photographer on the OBX for over a decade. And I’m doing all the editing work! It’s been amazing to tear up all over again seeing moments captured of pure joy during our ceremony or the funny dancing shots of our family when we didn’t even know they got on the dance floor. Having all the details and record of those small decisions we made along the way to create our wedding vision is priceless.”

No place like it

“We are so grateful to live in such a beautiful place!!! Having captured so many other couples weddings here on the Outer Banks, I wanted to make our wedding our own and unlike any I’d ever shot before. We had talked about doing a destination wedding somewhere else, but ultimately we wanted to create those memories in a place that was near and dear to our hearts. John and I are both very sentimental. We loved the idea of getting married in our backyard at the home where we will build a life together. I can look out my window at our oak tree in the backyard, and see the very spot where we were married any time I want! Plus John redesigned and landscaped our entire backyard in preparation for our wedding ceremony. He put in over 150 new plants, expanded the existing beds and had our lawn in tiptop shape! We had just bought the family cottage on Pond Island a couple weeks before we got engaged, so having a tented reception on the sound at our family’s beach box was also very special and a no brainer!”

Dogs will be dogs

“Gracie and Ross are our pups and they were both in our wedding ceremony. They are super special to us!!! Ross is the little Rat Terrier, he wore a bow-tie and Gracie is the Doberman and she had a flower collar. Both are rescues and are the center of our universe! We bought them sterling silver dog tags as a special gift and memento of the day. Funny thing is, during the middle of our ceremony, the UPS guy showed up! Our dogs love him because he brings them treats so they were going nuts! It was a moment that I’ll never forget.”

Best advice

“Your timeline is sooo important. The day goes by in a blink of an eye and it will seem like such a whirlwind afterward. Be sure to budget plenty of time and even include a little cushion here and there for when things fall behind. We had amazing coordinators who helped keep us on track, and luckily we had left an extra 30 minutes before the ceremony so we could relax, which we absolutely needed when we had to postpone our first look waiting for the rain to stop. It poured down rain ALL morning long. The rain didn’t clear out until one and half hours before the ceremony.”

2019 WEDDING GUIDE TO THE OUTER BANKS

Real Weddings

Hannah Luckenbaugh

&

Nicholas Newman June 16, 2018 INTERVIEW BY MICHELLE WAGNER SUBMITTED BY LORI DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

Venue: The Promenade | Floral and Décor: Honey Suckle Events Hair and Makeup: Salty Hair Salon | Cake: Outer Banks Brewing Station Caterer: Captain Bob’s | Bar & Spirits: Corolla Beer Garden Photographer: Lori Douglas Photography | Videographer: Reel Love Musician: Groove Motive (East Coast Entertainment) DJ: The Captain Entertainment Equipment Rentals: Ocean Atlantic Rentals

OUTERBANKSWEDDINGGUIDE.COM

Luckenbaugh - Newman In the beginning…

Nick was born and raised on the Outer Banks. Hannah is from Pennsylvania but was working at Tortuga’s Lie during the summer of 2015 when they met. Their summer romance turned into a love of a lifetime and the two became engaged in October of 2017. That’s when all the fun, and the planning began!

The perfect venue

For Nick’s family, his wedding would be the third of the Newman family in the last three years – all of which were held on the Outer Banks. His older sister was married in 2016 and his younger sister in 2017 so the family was well versed in wedding planning on the Outer Banks. There was no question that Nick and Hannah would get married at The Promenade, located along the sound in Kitty Hawk. Nick’s parents own the property and that is where the happy couple now lives. They decided to get married outside and have the reception in a large tent on the property. “The Promenade is near and dear to Nick’s heart. There’s a personal connection,” Hannah said.

The first look

Nick and Hannah opted for First Look photos and Hannah says its one of the best decisions they made when it came to wedding planning. They questioned whether they wanted to go this non-traditional route and see each other before that moment Hannah walks down the aisle – but they found they definitely made the right decision. “It was really nice to have a couple of minutes with just the two of us without everyone else around,” Hannah said. And the photos, well, they were stunning!

A little honey

Honey, Nick and Hannah’s one-year-old golden retriever, has been part of their family since they moved in together and that meant Honey was certainly going to be a part of their wedding, too. While Honey was supposed to walk down the aisle with the Newman’s flower girl, that didn’t exactly happen since Honey ran ahead. But it all worked out with Honey spending the rest of the ceremony by Nick and Hannah’s side.

Simply rustic

While Nick and Hannah didn’t have a theme to their wedding, it was definitely more on the rustic side. “We went with pretty minimalistic,” said Hannah, adding that there was lots of greenery on all the tables with handwritten signs against a wood background. Since they couldn’t afford farmers tables, Hannah’s dad made wooden decorative chargers that were stained a dark brown to go under the table settings. Their sweetheart table was also of a beautiful natural wood. All of this culminated in a beautiful rustic style that was all their own.

Best advice

When Hannah and Nick decided on an outside wedding, they stuck with their decision and were so happy they did. “It was warm, but not terribly hot,” says Hannah. Her best piece of advice was to go with what you really want when planning your wedding, including the decision to have it outdoors. “It’s always good to have a back up plan…but if you want to have a wedding outside, I’d just stick with it. Remember that no matter what happens, you are there to get married so just go for it if that’s what you want to do.”

Berardelli - Gayheart The perfect destination

We live in Denver, but Tyler wanted a destination wedding and I wanted to make sure all of our friends & family could get there by car. We’d both been to the Outer Banks on vacation growing up. Tyler and I are pretty laid back so getting married on the beach made sense for us, and having the option to rent the big beach houses and have all of our friends stay with us for the long weekend was exactly what we wanted. The OBX is pet friendly so that also helped make the decision. We knew we wanted our pup to be part of the ceremony and there to celebrate our special day with us. We believe in supporting small, local businesses and the OBX is full of them. Once I went to the Wedding Expo there, I knew we had picked the right place. Everyone I talked to was so friendly and made me so excited to plan our wedding in such a special, warm hearted place. Knowing our guests were coming from long distances for a short period of time, I wanted to make sure they got the full OBX experience at our wedding. We used all local vendors.

Site unseen

All I had to do was see the pictures. Jennette’s Pier is simply stunning. I knew that’s where I wanted to get married. I called my mom after and told her I made up my mind. She was a little skeptical because I hadn’t seen it before, but I made sure to do my research. I loved having the option of getting married in the sand then having a reception inside, but still giving guests the option to stand out on the panoramic porch or pier. I got to see it for the first time when we came down to start planning our wedding, well afterwards we booked it. Walking in, I started crying happy tears. I couldn’t have picked a better place to have our wedding.

A pair of very special bouquets

My younger cousin was a bridesmaid. Her older brother/my cousin passed away a few years ago, so we included his dog tags on her bouquet. My favorite person, my aunt Gilda passed away, so to honor her, I used her rosary on my bouquet as my something old, borrowed, and blue.

Pinterest boards, Hobby Lobby trips, and Etsy finds

While researching DIY decorations I read something that really stuck with me: “Think outside the box, don’t try to copy Pinterest.” I did just that. Just like most girls I had my wedding board and loved so many ideas. I am indecisive so that made it a little overwhelming for me. I knew I had to start making final decisions, so I went to Hobby Lobby with my mom to look at ideas for decorations. Having a hands on experience will tell you what you truly like. By the end of it, I noticed I was using Etsy for a lot of my wants and needs, purchasing small items to add final touches and fulfill my vision. I knew I didn’t want a very beachy theme, but still wanted to recognize our location. With this in mind, I used a sea glass color scheme and based most of my décor around that. Tyler and I love a lot of the same colors so that helped a lot.

Best advice

Don’t get discouraged. Wedding planning can be overwhelming and stressful, but at the end of the day you have to remind yourself that this is a celebration of love and its okay to take a break. Take everything one step at a time and don’t try to do everything at once. Most importantly, stay organized! You’ll be so thankful you did. And if something still goes wrong on the day remember there’s nothing you can do. So let it go, keep smiling, and keep dancing!

Gould - Martenelli Very pleased to meet you

“We went to the same high school,” says Bethany. “Our two best friends introduced us. We ended up dating for 8 years.” Friends are great. Friends with impressive match-making skills are even better!

An enchanted proposal

January 20, 2017 will forever be emblazoned in Bethany’s memory. That day found her, her mother, and sisters enjoying a visit to one of Bethany’s favorite places - Disney World. “I’m pretty much obsessed with Disney and especially the Magic Kingdom,” she says. “It’s always been my dream to have my marriage proposal take place in front of Cinderella’s Castle.” On that day “I was standing there, right near the castle, when something caught my eye. It was Jared! He was hiding behind a light pole. I couldn’t believe it!” He was there to make Bethany’s dream come true. He got down on one knee and popped the question.“He flew down there just for that reason,” Bethany said, her voice full of love and gratitude. And yet another reason to think of Disney World as “the most magical place on earth!”

Fantasy becomes reality

On one of our family vacations, we drove past the site where Pine Island Lodge was under construction. “Every year, from that point on, each time we drove past the lodge, I would say, ‘I’m going to get married there.’ And each time, my family would laugh and say, ‘no you’re not’.” Of course, Bethany’s wedding and reception took place at Pine Island Lodge. Never underestimate the power of a girl with a dream!

Weathering the weather

“The day of the wedding, the temperatures were in the mid-80s and there was a breeze coming off the ocean. There was the threat of storms which made for a beautifully dramatic sky, but the storms never came.

The unveiling

We conducted the ceremony on the beach. “My sister’s father-in-law, also a family friend, officiated. He has been involved in our lives, so it was especially meaningful. The eight bridesmaids led the procession, dressed in shades of coral, much like the interior color of a seashell. The groomsmen were outfitted in suits to match the hue of the deep blue sea. “My niece was the flower girl and Jared’s cousin was the ring bearer. I had wanted the photographer to capture the look on Jared’s face when he first caught a glimpse of me making my way onto the beach. My veil kept getting caught and in a moment of frustration, I simply decided to remove it. This caused quite a bit of laughter amongst the guests, Jared included, but it certainly lightened the mood a bit.”

DIO - Do it ourselves

Seashells, artfully-draped fishing nets, whimsically-designed anchors. “All the ‘beachy’ decorations were made with the help of family and friends. It was a huge, and fun, group effort. It made the wedding that much more special. My mother and mother-in-law went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect.”

Eat. Dance. Repeat.

“When deciding on a caterer, our wedding planner told us that as soon as we tried Currituck BBQ, we were going to love it. And she was right! Another pleasant surprise was when the best man stood to make a speech but instead sang a song that he had composed. Jared and I danced to “You and I” (John Legend), one of our favorite songs. At one point, every guest was on the dance floor. Our families love to dance! I remember just looking around and really soaking up the moment. I thought how great it was that all those people were there for us, to celebrate our marriage. That is one of my favorite memories of the day.”

Take it from me

“Make sure you hire a wedding planner, especially if planning everything from a distance. If something should go wrong, they are there to make it right. They help bring everything together. I wouldn’t change a thing about my wedding. It was perfect in every way!”
