October 13th – November 2nd 2013 “I think of my paintings as capturing a moment in time, often cinematic approach. I aspire to encompass the human condition – a shared experience or the emotions of a solitary character. The initial concept for a painting starts with something observed – a man in a café or a woman crossing the street. These ideas are then expanded upon using models in my studio or out on location. Whether it is an oil study or the final painting, I prefer to paint directly from the model, looking for interesting shapes and patterns in the composition. The way a person stands or tilts their head can say so much about them. This is more compelling when the face is partially hidden, adding an enigmatic quality to the scene. The models have to look natural and spontaneous and the body language between these characters suggests an intimate or significant moment. I am engaged in telling a story with economy, my compositions are simple. Like music I try to incorporate soft passages, lively interludes and a crescendo”.
