About Three Stone Steps’ Metal Art All the items offered here are handmade in Haiti. Many of the products are original designs by individual artists. Others are the result of collaboration between Three Stone Steps and an artist. These collaborative products are exclusive to Three Stone Steps. The products begin as old, used oil drums. After the residue is burned out of the drum, workers then flatten it to be used as a canvas of sorts. An artist than traces a pattern on the flattened drum, and with hammers, a chisel or two, and a lot of patience, a design is hammered out. The work is then polished and coated with a clear enamel. All this work takes place in the outdoors without any electricity. These pieces can be used inside or out. Care: Although the pieces are coated, they can rust. The best way to deal with this is to treat the artwork once a year or so with a clear spray enamel, such as Krylon or Rustoleum. This is especially important if the piece is kept outside. Of course, letting the product “age” is a viable option for those who prefer that aesthetic.
