“Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity...”
(Psalm 32:2)
This is the cause of true blessedness for any whom God has chosen in His eternal grace in Christ. Rather than charge His elect with their sin, He laid it to the account of the LORD Jesus when He came to the earth to work out their salvation for them, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) He was made sin (not sinful). It means that His soul was made an Offering for sin, Isaiah 53:10. The charge of sin was laid on Him, rather than the elect sinner, Isaiah 53:5. The ‘non-imputation’ of sin to the sinner is because of the imputation (charge) of that sin to the Savior. In that is the entire work of justification whereby God can be God and declare righteous the sinner for Christ’s sake. It all occurred simultaneously at the cross.
When someone asks, ‘How do I know whether I am one of that blessed number for whom Christ paid the debt and my sin charged to Him not me?’ The answer is that “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God...” (Romans 8:16) The law may charge sin upon the conscience, Satan may bring many accusations and the trembling sinner may reckon many iniquities against himself and be ready to own himself accursed, yet the LORD imputes not a single iniquity to him but rather pronounces him blessed.
