State parks have always been a refuge for families struggling financially. Growing up, that’s really the only getaways we had while my dad was still around. Find a state park, pitch a tent, and just enjoy the outdoors. Hot dogs are cheap, so is water. And honestly, when it’s with the people you love, hot dogs and water are acceptable and even tasty if grilled correctly (of course not the water). Throwing the kids in the back of a car with no seatbelts might be a thing of the past (I know, more great laws), but state parks are still around, and for the most part are still a beautiful place to get away. Either alone, with your significant other or with the rugrats there is a park somewhere close that you may or may not know about. Swede Johnson Recreational Area, just south of Joaquin, Texas, sits on the mouth of the Sabine River leading into the Toledo Bend Reservoir. Amenities include a small campground for tents, a playground for the kids featuring the old school metal slides that bring back great memories of scorched Earth and skinless legs (not really), BBQ pits, walking trails, and a boat launch for those wanting to enjoy something other than bank fishing. It also backs up to the North Toledo Bend Wildlife Management Area, home to trails full of life. Hikers have reported spotting animals from deer, turkey, hogs (yeah, good luck with those turf destroyers), exotic birds (to me anything other than a sparrow or pigeon), ducks, and the occasional Bigfoot sighting. Whether it’s the Swede Johnson Recreational Area or one of the other two dozen state parks within a two-hour driving radius from Shreveport, get out and enjoy nature. Sit by the water and soak up the breeze.
