The Legend
of
JUJU roAd
The Year, 1861. On a well-lit full moon night on the Sandridge Cotton Farm in newly formed Bossier Parish, somewhere close to modern day Swan Lake Road in Bossier City, Benjamin “Juju” Black sneaks out of his lean-to makeshift living structure headed towards the creek to meet the plantation owner’s eldest daughter. Sandridge, catching wind of the affair weeks before, had enough and would take matters into his own hands that night. He and a group of friends caught up with JuJu before his rendezvous, hanging him from a tree just south of
the plantation and setting his limp body on fire. His daughter, witnessing the entire event unfold and knowing she could do nothing to stop it, ran back to the creek and drowned herself. Legend has it that you can still see the swinging body of JuJu late at night, and hear the screams of both him and the plantation owner’s daughter crying out for her forbidden lover. It’s best to hear the cries of both on a full moon night in the late fall months, the same setting where JuJu was murdered because of his love of a white woman.
